KALE: as good as you’ve heard

by Dr. Anthony Salzarulo Few greens can compare to the magnificent nutrient panel of kale, making it a highly nutrient-dense food. It truly is a superfood.

One cup of fresh raw kale supplies approximately 10,000 IU of vitamin A, primarily in the forms of betacarotene. It also contains the other carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. These carotenoids have antioxidant properties that protect the body from free radicals.

Eventually, the damage caused by free radicals can cause several chronic illnesses.

Kale is also an excellent source of amino acids. It contains all nine essential amino acids, making it an indispensable food source for everyone, including vegans and vegetarians. It is also supported by several non-essential amino acids and contains all but two of the twenty amino acids present in protein. Another unique nutritional quality of kale is the abundant presence of omega-3 fatty acids. Generally thought of as a nutrient only found in fish, seafood and flax, kale takes its place among omega-3 foods. Kale actually contains more omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6 fatty acids, which is rare among most veggies.

Lutein and zeaxanthin have been studied rigorously for their roles in eye health.

Playing various protective functions, these two carotenoids that are established within the human retina not only scavenge free radicals, thereby protecting individuals from developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, but also guard against the damage caused by blue light. Fluorescent lighting, computer and video screens, cell phones and even alarm clocks emit damaging blue light that contributes to modern eye degeneration. This superfood is a necessary dietary supplement to combat the impairment committed by everyday technology.

Kale also provides an impressive amount of vitamin K, containing 547 micrograms per single cup serving. Vitamin K is most often associated with blood clotting, but it has also been studied as an influential nutrient in bone mineralization. Postmenopausal women with risk factors for osteoporosis have an increased potential for vitamin K deficiency, contributing to bone loss.

Yoga: An ancient practice with modern applications

The first Yogis came thousands of years before the invention of technology as we know it, yet it is absolutely amazing how perfectly suited this ancient practice is for our modern world. With much of our work and communications taking place through the use of digital devices, we are seeing a drastic increase in neck and shoulder pain issues, so much so that the epidemic even has its own name: “tech neck”.

We have all likely felt the affect of long hours at the computer or sometimes even after just a few minutes on our phones. As we focus on the screen in front of us, our head tends to gravitate towards it, shortening our neck and drastically increasing the amount of pressure on our spine. This forward head posture (when the head is in front of the shoulders, instead of right on top) puts such an intense load on your neck that it can be the equivalent of up to 60 pounds (!) of pressure. To deal with this pressure, your body has to call in extra help, and does so by increasing muscle tension in the upper back and shoulder area, often leading to discomfort and setting the stage for pain and mobility issues.

Recognizing the spine as the central pathway of our nervous system, the Yogis have long known that the health of our spine is absolutely essential to our overall health and well-being. By moving us through our normal range of motion, Yoga helps us counter-balance the effects of our daily activities (driving, sitting, etc.) and helps return our bodies to a more neutral, balanced position.

These movements also help nourish the spinal disks (shock absorbing cushions between the spinal vertebrae), which helps ward off degeneration and keeps your spine younger, longer. helpful hint: Try practicing a gentle backbend like Cobra pose to help maintain flexibility in the front of your body, strengthen your back muscles and balance the effects of long hours in a seated position.

Yoga encourages postural awareness. By encouraging us to internalize our focus and awareness, Yoga helps us to learn more about ourselves and our postural habits or tendencies. As we use the Yoga practice to help bring ourselves back into balance, we also develop mindfulness of how we hold and carry our body and how it affects our experience of life. As this awareness grows, we can start to see its benefits trickling into our everyday life when we become mindful of our posture and check in with it regularly throughout the day. helpful hint: Find a posture reminder (something that happens often throughout your day for example: checking your email, answering your phone, etc.) that reminds you to stop and reconnect to your breath and reminds you to become aware of how you are holding your body and how you could do so with more ease. makes use of our busy, monkey minds. The nature of our world today is such that we are constantly bombarded with information and are well adept at multitasking. Asana (the physical postures of Yoga) practice calls upon this skill by challenging us to constantly scan

our bodies, shifting our awareness around and within the different aspects of the pose while still maintaining an even breath. By making use of our mind’s ability to do several things simultaneously, Yoga allows us to experience mental stillness and focused awareness.

Since they help us to develop focus and find quiet within our busy minds, meditation and Yoga are found to be incredibly beneficial for brain health and function according to recent studies done at Harvard University. helpful hint: Many people find it challenging to focus their mind; you are not alone! Place yourself in a comfortable position and try repeating a word or a sound that has special meaning to you for at least 3 minutes a day. You can say it silently or out loud, and if you get distracted, simply take a breath and patiently begin repeating the word again. Some days will be easier than others, but keep trying, gradually adding a minute at a time or even doing this practice twice a day. yoga helps us to slow down. the beauty and benefit of slowing things down. Because of its calming effect on our nervous system, even just a few minutes of Yoga slows down your heartbeat and your rate of respiration to encourage healing and recovery throughout your whole body.

By allowing time for us to pause within our day, Yoga encourages us to move slowly and mindfully. As we practice observation and slowing down on the mat, we develop the ability to do so in our lives off the mat, too.

Whether it is to appreciate beauty around us or to pause and allow for some space to respond to a situation rather than react to it, Yoga reminds us to tune in and observe. helpful hint: If you find yourself in a stressful situation, begin to observe your breath. After a few breaths, gradually begin to lengthen your exhalations. As you exhale, feel yourself releasing the worry, frustration or whatever is bothering you; slowly begin to lengthen your inhalation to fill space that you have created with the release. Continue until you feel yourself calm down and relax.

Tears on the Yoga Mat

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word for ‘connection’ or ‘union.’ A yoga practice connects awareness of the breath with specific poses (asanas), whose energetic effects are said to bring harmony and union to your whole being. That includes body, mind, spirit, and emotions.

Because it has been around so long (estimates are roughly between 5,000 to 10,000 years) and engages so many people and cultures, yoga has evolved in many different ways. The yogic spectrum runs from an approach that treats the process primarily as physical exercise, to an approach that focuses on breathwork and chanting as the gateway for spiritual transformation.

You can easily find classes in hot yoga; partner yoga; yoga with continual movement or long-held poses; laughing yoga; yoga with chanting or without; by yourself; in a room with many others; online… There are hundreds of variations.

Emotional release during yoga is healthy In some practices, the form is emphasized, in others, the effect or result is emphasized, but all include breath, positioning of the body, and awareness of the transitional connections between poses or movements, i.e. the how is generally as or more important than the what.

In my 40+ years of bodywork practice, I have seen that those with more 12

ectomorphic bodies—those with long, slender bones and bodies and relatively little muscle or fat—need stretching, over massage or vigorous movement.

They tend to accumulate tension and stiffness in their tendons and ligaments rather than in their muscles. I think of such bodies as “yoga bodies.” By contrast, those whose bodies tend toward the mesomorphic pole— those with shorter bones and bigger, heavier muscles—may tend to need movement even more than stretching.

So Tai Chi, massage, and movementoriented yoga practices may be a better fit for them. As a mesomorph, I am not built to do an elegant, locked eagle pose, ever, and I do both yoga and Qi Gong for their respective benefits.

Finding a practice that fits your body’s needs makes all the difference for what you stick with. The practice becomes a gift to yourself as well as those around you as it builds your connection with your center.

What I’m saying here also applies to Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and other practices that bring body, mind, awareness, and breath into alignment. Breathing while moving or holding poses—especially challenging poses held for a long

time—moves energy through the physical stuck spots that often hold buried emotional energy. For example, yoga’s “camel pose”, where you kneel and stretch your chest open, bend backwards and reach for your heels, is a known tear-jerker as it literally opens the chest and exposes the heart.

If your practice triggers emotional release, consider yourself lucky.

It’s generally healthier to release stuck emotion than carry it around because it tends to leak out unconsciously in your behavior and can cause problems. The trick is to create a safe space so that release can happen gracefully.

When the Tears Start to Flow While emotional release in a yoga class is generally acknowledged as normal, it doesn’t always feel safe and not every yoga instructor has the skill set to hold emotional release effectively.

Our culture tends to characterize emotional outbursts of any intensity as unpleasant and embarrassing, so it takes out-of-the-ordinary kindness and understanding to create emotional safety in a room full of people—such that tears or laughter waiting for release can flow out.

It’s best if the instructor sets up the practice with a few words about emotions being welcome and how she (or he) will handle emotional release if it arises. She doesn’t

align your body • mind • awareness • breath need a degree in psychology or to be a high-level intuitive to facilitate this emotional healing. To hold space for potentially uncomfortable emotions, the instructor simply deepens her breath and encourages her student(s) to do the same. The idea is to bring a child-like wonder and curiosity to what’s happening. She models this by letting go of any pre-conceived ideas, agenda and judgment she might have, and expanding into the present moment.

She then gently observes and allows the body that is releasing emotions to lead the way. If she doesn’t

understand something she notices, she might ask directly, “What’s going on in your body?” or “If your shoulder could speak, what would it say?” It is amazing how willing most bodies are to “speak” when given a sincere and willing ear. She creates the opening with an attitude of acceptance far more than with any particular technique.

Whether you are teaching a yoga class, doing asanas on your own, or doing another meditative practice, the thing to do when an emotion arises is to deepen the breath and sink into it even further. Adding permission for emotions to surface in your practice(s) will expand the healing possibilities immensely.

YOGA BRAIN

The practice of yoga has many layers and is many different things to many people.

It is exercise, a way to strengthen our muscles and have a lean body. It is willpower, determination and commitment when we are holding a difficult pose.

It is concentration, presence and an exercise for our brain. It is a lifestyle which reminds us of health, vibrancy, flexibility, opening and expanding. AND it is also a way of moving our body’s energy.

Moving our body energy is a key to longevity, healing and youthfulness. Our bodies are made up of energy. We are energetic beings with enough electric current running through us to light a 15-watt light bulb. We are so powerful!

Energy that does not move within our body becomes stagnant and leads to sickness or disease. So it’s crucial that we move, shake, jiggle, dance, stretch and breathe energy flow in our body daily. Here are some sample ways we can move energy in our body to create cleansing, expanding and healing.

1. T ake 3 deep breaths every day—move the energy with the power of deep full body breathing. Try gathering all the internal gunk as you breathe in and release all the internal gunk as you breathe out.

2. G et on a mat, get on the floor—go to a yoga class or move the coffee table out of the way in your living room and get on the floor. It doesn’t matter where you do it or how you do it.

Just do it! Sit cross-legged and start rotating your hips and jiggling your spine. Move your body and stretch into the pain spots too. Release all the tightness and become flexible.

As interest in yoga continues to spread in Western culture, we may

wonder if there’s more to it than just performing postures (asanas) and learning a routine of Indian calisthenics or gymnastics.

Fortunately, when we look more deeply, we see that the yogic tradition has a great deal more than this to teach us all.

Beyond the usual fitness, flexibility, balance, and rejuvenating effects that are making it wildly popular in our culture, we see that yoga is rooted in spiritual practice and in an aspiration to achieve spiritual union, reflected in the root meaning of the word. As an essentially spiritual path of purification and awakening, it’s not surprising that it’s based on cultivating an attitude of nonviolence, or in Sanskrit, ahimsa. Though often overlooked in contemporary yogic practice, this is particularly significant because all of us are born into a culture that teaches us to compete, eat animal-sourced foods, and behave in many ways that are the opposite of ahimsa. Hidden within the outer forms of yoga, lay the inner transformation that yoga seeks to create within us.

It’s no accident, for example, that in the foundational yogic text, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra on the Eight Limbs of Yoga, the very first branch on the very first limb is ahimsa. This underlying teaching is that, as we make nonviolence and lovingkindness for others the primary guides in our lives, we find that freedom, wisdom, joy, peace, and authentic spiritual awakening naturally and inevitably follow. Regarding food, the yogic tradition has long recognized consequent vegetarianism as the ideal, encouraging abstention from the violence and toxicity inherent in eating flesh and eggs, but it has traditionally included dairy products.

Now that spell is being broken and yoga practitioners are increasingly committing to vegan living as an essential foundation for their practice.

Denied their mothers’ nurturance and milk, the calves survive, ironically, on a mixture of soymilk, cows’ blood, and additives.

The mother cows are immediately impregnated again while lactating, which quickly destroys their health; their physical misery mirrors the emotional agony they face, of being confined, sexually abused, and robbed of their children. Of the four calves that a dairy cow typically births, one will become a slave to replace her mother, and the other three will be killed either at birth or after a few months of excruciating hyper-confinement for veal. These calves bring in money for their flesh, skin, and the rennin in their stomachs that’s used to coagulate cheese. In fact, it’s common practice to send a cow to slaughter when she’s eight months pregnant with her fifth calf so the industry can kill them both to increase profits. Though their natural lifespan is 25 years, cows are sent off to slaughter at only 4 to 5 years of age, debilitated by this abuse, and this is standard procedure on virtually all dairies, both organic and commercial.

This is a significant development, demonstrating the vibrancy and authenticity of the yoga community as it becomes increasingly obvious that dairy operations are inherently abusive in many ways. For example, cows are forcibly impregnated on what the dairy industry grossly terms “rape-racks” to induce lactation.

Buying and eating dairy products are unnecessary and contrary to the spirit and practice of yogic principles. In fact, they are detrimental not just to the cows who suffer by being reduced to milk machines, but also to fragile ecosystems, wildlife, climate stability, and genetic diversity, all of which are harmed by dairy operations, and animal agriculture in general. This is because of the inherent inefficiency of feeding irrigated grains to cows for dairy. For example, it takes a thousand gallons of water to make one gallon of milk, plus enormous quantities of grain, land, fishmeal, and petroleum, while generating polluting excrement, soil erosion, deforestation, and greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide.

Besides the trauma inflicted on cows and ecosystems, dairy industry workers are also traumatized by being forced to routinely mutilate and abuse the animals they are exploiting. As dairy consumers, we are paying them to do work that tends to bring out the worst in them. Hungry people are also harmed, because millions of dollars of taxpayer-funded subsidies artificially reduce the cost of dairy products that convert land, grain, and fertilizer into greenhouse gases, toxic sewage, and dairy products for the privileged while millions of people endure hunger and starvation. Add to that the detriment that dairy products have on the human body. Veganism, the authentic contemporary practice of ahimsa, is an empowering response to this violence and waste, and blesses animals, our Earth, hungry people, wildlife, and our own physical, mental, and spiritual health as well.

As a child and young person raised on a diet loaded with dairy products, my siblings and I experienced the earaches, sore throats, runny noses, constipation, acne, and other problems that are commonly linked with dairy consumption. Cows’ milk is intended for baby calves who put on six hundred pounds in their first year, and who have the digestive enzyme rennin to break down casein, the main protein in milk.

We lack this enzyme and casein causes enormous mischief in humans, as contemporary research has confirmed, increasing the risk of autoimmune diseases, diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, breast, prostate, and colon cancer, and other conditions caused by the inflammatory and acidifying effects of dairy foods.

Giving up dairy products and living a plant-based – vegan – lifestyle for the past 35 years has not only brought me (and my spouse Madeleine) wonderful health benefits, it has also brought greater mental clarity and inner peace. After all, the many toxic chemicals and heavy metals in our environment are typically fat soluble and end up in the fat of cows who are fed huge quantities of GMO grain, soy, alfalfa, fish meal, and rendered animal by-products, as well as hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs and chemicals. These toxins end up concentrated in milk and especially in cream, cheese, ice cream, butter, and ghee. Besides these physical toxins are the metaphysical toxins.

In buying dairy, we are supporting (and directly causing) terror, despair, confinement, desperation, panic, sadness, rage, and anxiety, because these are the routine experiences of the innocent animals on dairy operations, and we then go further

and eat these toxic products, incorporating them and polluting our body temple, and feeding them to our trusting children. We do this because we have been taught to do it; that’s basically the only reason.

It’s profoundly liberating to make an effort to understand the bigger picture of our food choices, and to bring our lives and food choices into alignment with our values.

The more we understand about nutrition, the more we understand that all of us have been given the gift of physical bodies that don’t require anyone to suffer to get all the nutrients we need to be radiantly healthy. Veganism is another word for ahimsa: for lovingkindness, mercy, and caring for others. Our physical, mental, spiritual, cultural, and environmental health depend on our questioning the official narratives and traditions of our culture, and endeavoring to be the positive change we wish to see in our world.

We are all connected. May we discover and practice the teachings of yoga to increase not just physical, mental, and spiritual health, but also to contribute to building a world of harmony, freedom, justice, and compassion for all of us on this beautiful and abundant Earth.

A Song for Mauna Kea: Cause for Care

In a remote part of our planet, atop a relatively isolated and seemingly desolate part of a mountaintop, a faint noise is being heard across the globe.

It is the protests of a small group of people who are crying out for sanctity. It may appear to be a simple cry for the preservation of a mere speck of land, but the reason that this cry is being heard throughout the many societies that span our globe is profound.

What is presently taking place atop Mauna Kea is the expression that resonates with practicality and sensibility throughout our human hearts. The world is watching these critical events with solemn anticipation specifically because it represents the same challenge that all of humanity is now facing—the recognition that this Earth is our Life Support System, our Provider, our Mother; and as such, she deserves our reverence. This return to sanctity is now at odds with the voracious drive for myopic financial gain that has been disintegrating the human character and fueling rampant destruction of our sacred Earth.

What many in our community may impulsively retort is that the TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) that is being proposed for construction atop Mauna Kea will avail ‘critical information about the mysteries of the Universe that will support the better understanding of our Cosmos for humanity’.

On the surface this may seem well and good enough, but we will soon need to pose the question, “What good is knowing about the mysteries of the Universe if, in the process, we desecrate our own planet and destroy the lives of those we share it with?” In protest one might say, “But building a ‘little’ telescope on one little spot on top of a big giant mountain won’t hurt anything”. And therein lies the problem. In the wake of its construction and use will be a violently disturbed habitat of endemic birds and flora that may not survive its impact. And although the massive footprint of the TMT may seem

insignificant compared to the habitat decimation that is happening elsewhere in the world, it will undeniably leave a formidable footprint of concrete, steel, and machinery that will have a useful lifespan of perhaps 100 years—after which it will become an obsolete monolith for our mo’opuna to contend with. It will be a heap of scrap left standing atop a sacred entity, a mountain.

For those who question the sentiments that anyone may hold for a mountain, we ought to recognize that throughout history and across the globe, humans have always found places that were held in constant awe. Whether they were waterfalls, lakes, ocean vistas, or majestic valleys, we have always found ourselves feeling a deep sense of humility, wonder, reverence, and connection with something absolutely grand while in their presence. In these sacred places we have been able to find sanctity with our world. Not the least of these sacred places can be recognized in our reverence for mountains.

Whether we see the greatness of Mt. Fuji, Mt. Shasta, Denali, the Andes, the Rockies, the Sierras, or the Himalayas, we humans have always felt a deep and penetrating reverence for our mountains.

The indigenous people of Hawai’i were able to see and embrace this same significance that has heralded mountains as temples throughout human societies. They established folklore and tales that captivated the minds and stirred the imaginations of their mo’opuna, and then bade them to continue holding their sacred mountain in reverent regard. Like cultures and civilizations throughout the world, chants, dances, rituals, and celebrations were established to expressly pay homage to this Life Supporting entity. From the mountains, we receive the waters that nourish our gardens and ourselves. The clouds that drift into and embrace Her slopes cry joyous tears that cascade from lofty heights to trickle their way into our hearts. We rejoice with gratitude and humility for the prosperity that they grant us. We sing their praise and dance in their honor. We tell mirth filled tales of their providence and beacon our progeny to carry this sentiment into their heritage so the generations may retain the wisdom of reverence for our beloved, Life giving mountains.

On Mauna Kea, the generations who have been able to receive and honor this gift from our kupuna are now crying out. They are solemnly proclaiming their creed that echoes not only through the hearts of fellow kanaka, kama’aina, and malahini but through the hearts of anyone and everyone who has ever recognized and held dear the sanctity of our Mother Planet. Hawaiians are fighting for the sanctity of the human heart. The ancient ability to recognize, revere, and pay sincere homage to our Mother is presently being challenged by the Living Aloha

human weakness for short term gratification. This applies not only to the plight of Mauna Kea but to every atrocity that is presently being committed in the interest of immediate monetary gain.

The voices atop Mauna Kea are being focused on and heard globally – specifically because they are the same cries that resound from every mother, father, and elder who can see that their progeny’s world is being sacrificed for someone’s personal, momentary (and superficial) glorification, whether through notoriety, monetary gain, or both.

Inextricably tied to this is the fact that these lands were not granted or offered by the Hawaiians, they were stolen. Lest we again permit the callous will of uninvited aggression to dominate and rule our lives, we should be concerned about these events atop Mauna Kea. We should allow our ability to care run unbridled, unfurled, and free.

If you find yourself recognizing the connection that this disruptive global event is having with every other injustice that is being imposed on the citizens of our world, including our fellow Earthmates, and even our selves, then it may be time to become part of the cry for sanctity. It may be time to make phone calls, write letters, hold up a placard or picket sign, talk to your neighbors, your representatives (i.e. senators, district reps., mayor, governor, etc.) and take action. It may be time to make your voice heard so that the cries from Mauna Kea or any other part of our Sacred Heart can sing out in confidence that they will be heard and supported.

Our imminent return to more humble ways of living is becoming more of a pressing necessity than a luxury. What we will soon need to recognize is that returning to our humble reverence for Papa Honua, our Mother Earth, isn’t an imposition, it’s a blessing. And not only a blessing for us, but for the heritage that we will soon be handing… reverently… to our children.

Big GMO Ag is Destroying the Health of Maui…

and the World

by David Klein, Ph.D., Naturopathic Doctor This article title may smack of overboard sensationalism, especially if you have never suffered with a debilitating illness or witnessed a loved one with a disease condition linked to GMO foods, but the reality is truly harrowing. I am just one of many doctors in the health field who have witnessed the rising incidence of GMO diet-related illness in recent years. We do indeed have a mounting crisis, here and worldwide.

The clients who have come to me in recent years with severe inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been slower to heal and suffered more, despite the most effective dietary healing programs.

GMO foods have insidious effects, which can be life-ruining.

Prior to 2005, I’ve observed that the two main causes of IBD have been 1. meat-based diets, and 2. highly-processed diets rich in

irritating items, especially pepper, chili peppers, curries, oregano, onions, garlic, vinegar, coffee and salt. In recent years, two new factors have arisen: 3. reckless over-prescription of antibiotics, and 4. GMO foods.

There is mounting scientific evidence to back up our claims.

But, one does not have to be a scientist to understand this—it’s just plain common sense that herbicides and GMO foods are dangerous and destructive.

GMOs are created by a laboratory process that transfers genetic material into the DNA of an organism, giving them different traits, which do not occur in nature, such as resistance to herbicides and pesticides. The resultant new GMO foods have proteins and other constituents, which are foreign and pathogenic to our physiology, causing inflammatory responses, cellular dysfunctions and severe illness.

GMO seeds and plants are “Roundup-Ready.” This means that they can be sprayed with Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide and survive the poisoning, while their neighboring weeds die. This is not always the case, however; resistant “superweeds” are reportedly defeating the herbicidal efforts.

The bottom of the page lists three authoritative sources that are sounding alarms about GMO madness. I highly recommend viewing all three videos and conducting your own research.

Roundup and many other herbicides are metal chelators.

The chemical ingredient that does the chelating is known as glyphosate. This means that chelating chemicals bond to mineral elements in the soil, bacteria and other micro organisms, plant cells, and animal cells, including human cells, as well

as the proteins and enzymes within those living organisms. When the minerals, such as iron, magnesium, manganese, calcium and zinc, in organic molecules and within the cells of living organisms are locked up by glyphosate, they cease to function, health deteriorates and death can ensue. In other words, glyphosate destroys enzymatic and physiological functionality, that causes nutritional deficiency or terminal malnutrition of the bacteria we need in our soils and our gut. The plants, their fruits, humans and all animals in the food chain now eating the tainted foods are at risk.

Glyphosate has been shown to alter the balance of intestinal micro flora, promoting the growth of pathogenic strains and decreasing

the numbers of good bacteria needed to synthesize vitamins.

This weakens our body’s defense system, leading to toxemia, bowel inflammation and a chain reaction of physiological deterioration.

Glyphosate is also bio accumulative, i.e., it builds up and persists in soil, microorganisms and all animals in the food chain. It gets even worse: components of GMO foods reportedly become part of the bacteria in our digestive tracts and reproduce continuously inside us— and that is why millions worldwide are suffering with inflamed bowels and allergies and getting no relief.

Antibiotic treatments only make matters worse—poisons don’t help

These crops reportedly accumulate high levels of glyphosate that remain in the food. Corn and cotton varieties are also engineered to produce an insecticide called Bt-toxin. The Bt-toxin is produced in every cell of genetically engineered corn and ends up in corn chips, corn tortillas, and other ingredients derived from corn (including all the many products containing “high fructose corn syrup”). A recent study suggests that Bt-toxin, glyphosate and other components of GMOs are linked to five conditions that may either initiate or exacerbate gluten-related disorders: intestinal permeability, imbalanced gut bacteria, immune activation and allergies, impaired digestion, damage to the intestinal wall, colitis, Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel. The Institute for Responsible Technology has noted that genetic engineering processes create massive collateral damage, causing mutations in hundreds or thousands of locations throughout plants DNA. Natural genes can be deleted or permanently turned on or off, and hundreds may change their behavior. Even the inserted genes can be damaged or rearranged, and may create proteins that can trigger allergies or promote disease.

There are nine GMO food crops currently on the market: soy, corn, cotton oil, canola oil, sugar from sugar beets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, and alfalfa. Yes, eating papayas here on Maui is dangerous unless they are non-GMO.

biotech giants. Many say that Hawaii is “ground zero” for GMO research.

These companies make poison and promote the poison foods industry.

For almost two decades, they have been growing test crops on Maui and Kauai with some of the most dangerous synthetic pesticides used in agriculture today.

And what is the Maui legislature, Health Department, the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Surgeon General doing about this, while the health of Americans —which is already in a calamitous state— slides

further downhill? Why is the science behind this not regarded as simply commonsense and obvious? Why are the rising disease statistics not yet alarming? Why did Maui County judges recently reject the GMO moratorium?

Because they are swayed by Monsanto’s legal team who convinced the judges that the economy (GMOchemical agriculture and Monsanto jobs) is more important than the health concerns of the citizens they are charged with safeguarding. Last year, Kauai was handed the same lame deal by its judiciary.

The state of Hawaii is not doing its job of insuring the welfare of its citizens. It’s up to us to educate our fellow Hawaiian citizens, present the truth, and make the judiciary comply.

In this way, Monsanto and the other hoodlums in the GMO industry will get booted out and healthful, sustainable and nutritious agriculture can regain their rightful place. The health of our economy, environment, flora and fauna, including us, will only improve, and we’ll have a great chance of restoring the paradise that has been lost.
