John Hardy is a handmade jewelry brand, which is reshaping the experience of luxury through a heritage of design, craftsmanship, quality and sustainability. The brand’s legacy is creating jewelry that reflects a collaboration of designers and artisans who are influenced by that commitment to be “Greener Every Day.” John Hardy is recognized as much for its unique designs, as it is for their environmental and social beliefs. The story started in 1975 when a young art student from Canada moved to the island of Bali in Indonesia. Here John Hardy began to study Balinese jewelry making techniques with a master artisan whose ancestors were goldsmiths to Bali’s former Royal Courts. John Hardy formed his company in 1989 and melded the techniques he had learned with his own fresh and original ideas... and the legend was born. In the late 1990’s head designer and creative director, Guy Bedarida, pictured on the right, joined the company. He possessed a vast knowledge of joaillerie from years of training and experience with prestigious design houses in Paris and his expertise took the John Hardy brand to a new level of excellence. Bedarida introduced new standards and techniques to the Bali studio artisans and guided a team of local illustrators in the French art of fine jewelry drawing as an integral part in the development of new designs. His aesthetic is inspired by nature, the ancient arts of Asia and his travels, this along with his flair for design and the ability to seamlessly blend the ancient Balinese craftsmanship along with modern European design has led to the development of some of John Hardy’s best-selling collections. The union between the time-honored Balinese traditions of the artisans and the chic interpretations of designers sets the John Hardy brand apart from the rest. CEO Damien Dernoncourt joined the team in 2003. Damien shared the dual passion for not only making jewelry but also a difference in people’s lives. Dernoncourt wanted to become part of the dream and make it a reality and has succeeded in building John Hardy into one of the most successful jewelry brands in the United States. He is dedicated to ensuring the company continues to be a pioneer in the area of environment and cultural preservation.

Dernoncourt is of the belief that internal beauty is just as important as external beauty and the company’s ethics and practices illustrate this belief. Along with their innovative and beautiful pieces, John Hardy also creates bespoke jewelry known as the Cinta Collection. Meaning “Love” in Indonesian, Cinta is their rarest collection of Haute Joaillerie. Founder John Hardy first asked Head Designer Guy Bedarida to create a special piece to offer as a gift to his wife in 2002. Soon , it became a regular tradition, with Guy designing exquisite pieces for Hardy’s wife until others began asking for their own. Each Cinta piece is entirely unique designed around a special shell or stone found on Bedarida’s world travels and then embellished to maximum beauty. The 18 karat gold cuff on the left is made with a Rubellite center stone, pink Sapphires and Diamonds. The John Hardy compound, shown above, was built in 1996 and is the company production centre. It is located in the heart of Bali and surrounded by bamboo forests and palm trees and is nothing short of a tropical paradise. Inspirational and eco friendly, the compound is made up of a series of low impact buildings, constructed in traditional Balinese style with bamboo and mud, some of the environmentally conscious efforts can be seen in the steps which have been constructed out of banyan tree roots and the cathedral which is entirely bamboo and entirely sustainable. Apart from the magnificent bamboo buildings which house showrooms, workshops and meeting rooms, the compound has two streams running through it, heirloom rice fields and an organic farm and serves as a living and gathering space for employees and animals alike. It would seem the owners of De Gully were destined to establish roots in oasis of beautiful and fragrant plantings. The four bedroom suites surround Barbados. By coincidence, both owners’ parents honeymooned here, and the courtyard, each opening onto the reclaimed brick pathway which continued to visit often over the years. So began the owners’ long-stand- wraps around this focal point. The bedrooms feature beautiful hardwood floors and shutters, with picking love affair with the island. chased Indonesian pieces, lends a very ‘collected’ aesthetic. Also in the mix are prints and ceramic pieces from famous Venezuelan artists and vintage pieces such as Amerindian woven baskets, while an antique Mariner’s compass and model ship are from Spain. This house, while beautiful, is not a ‘showpiece’ – it is very much a home, with an eclectic collection that the owners have garnered on their world travels over a period of time. From the living room, French doors open to reveal an outdoor patio and De Gully’s true pièce de résistance: mesmerizing views straight out to the horizon. On the lower level terrace, the pool deck and an inviting aqua and cobalt blue freeform pool enjoy the same spectacular views. As the name of the house implies, the property overlooks a gully and the interesting topography of this land allows for the enjoyment of multileveled spaces and gardens. To the left of the outdoor patio, a bridge leads to the formal dining gazebo, octagonal in shape, with seating for eight and romantically lit by a chandelier and candle sconces at night. On the other side is the private terrace of the master bedroom. Beyond into the gardens, a yoga/meditation gazebo accessed via another wooden bridge seems to literally float in the trees above the gully below. The lady of the house is an avid gardener and this is evident. The gardens are not only beautiful, but carefully laid out to enhance the beauty of this unique house. All around, the gardens are vibrant and tropical with various species of palms, variegated hibiscus, heliconias, alocasias and pops of bright red firecracker flowers, a favourite nectar of the hummingbirds. Although this property is located in a residential area, there is an overall feeling of solitude and tranquility. The only sounds are the gently knocking bamboo chimes and the wind in the casuarina trees which grow up from the gully floor below. Circumstances now dictate that the owners must make their home base overseas and De Gully is waiting for a new generation of settlers to fall in love and settle on our shores, to write their own chapter in history.

The wind in your hair, the sun on your skin, the sweet salty scent of the sea… most Barbadians are all too familiar with the sensations this picture invokes, it comes with the territory of living in such close proximity to the ocean and all of its therapeutic power.

No other place can quite capture this feeling like the East coast of Barbados, sequestered below the hills of the Scotland District beyond acres of sugar cane fields and trees full of wild monkeys, here it’s a whole other world. Whichever direction you approach from, the view that greets you as you crest over the rolling hills of this rugged landscape is rivaled by no other place on earth. The majestic jaws of the Atlantic Ocean sweep out before you with sunlight sparkling off the whitecaps, its salty fresh scent so sweet you want to bottle it and carry it home. The natural and un-spoilt beauty of the “Scotland District” lies within three of the parishes along the East coast and includes Martin’s Bay St. John, the international surfing Mecca of ‘Soup Bowl’ Bathsheba and onto Cattlewash in St. Joseph. Martin’s Bay is a little piece of old Barbadiana. This particular stretch of coastline evokes a sense of peace with its quaint, pretty bungalows and the sweet country folk who inhabit this sleepy little hamlet. The view from the shore is absolutely breathtaking…gentle waves slowly press into shore and a feeling of calm arrests your soul. A recommended “must” when visiting this part of the island is Bay Tavern, Martin’s Bay, be sure to stop and grab a tasty lunch from this rum shop cum restaurant. Local fishermen supply the Tavern with fresh catch daily and is then fried or grilled to perfection and served with a choice of local dishes including macaroni pie, breadfruit or peas and rice. Bajans in-the-know flock here on Thursdays for the Seafood Special and on Saturday night karaoke stirs up this sometimes sleepy village and is a good opportunity to get to know the friendly folk who live in this neck of the woods. Excellent service and friendly smiles are guaranteed, here the beauty of the people echo the environment they inhabit. Enjoy a nice leisurely drive along the coast drinking in the un-spoilt raw beauty of this lush coastline. Government law prohibits further development on the East coast so the landscape remains as pristine and natural as possible. Many of the old homes, rum shops and beautiful country churches you pass along the way have changed very little over the years, almost as though time has stood still.

Andromeda Gardens is a botanical haven overlooking Bathsheba and whose name is derived from the Greek Goddess because it is ‘chained’ to the coral rock of the East coast. This veritable garden of Eden is home to over 600 species of plants including ginger lilies, Vanda orchids, bearded fig trees and the unusual jade vine to name a few. The gardens were started by Iris Bannochie in the early 1950’s, a self taught horticulturalist who travelled the globe collecting plants and who, upon her passing, bequeathed Andromeda to the Barbados National Trust. At the entrance to the gardens in a colourful chattel house is the Hibiscus Gift Shop and Café. Here you can purchase admission tickets to the garden, light refreshments as well as little trinkets and souvenirs. A guide can take you on a tour or you can opt to travel the paths on your own following the beautifully hand-painted signs as you meander through. The beauty of the plants and flowers is mesmerizing and the air is cool and fragrant with the perfume of the many different species of flowers. The main surf break on the island can be found in Bathsheba, referred to fondly by the locals as “Soup Bowl” because a wave can travel nearly three thousand miles in the open ocean undisturbed by sandbars, reefs or land before it breaks here in a foamy soup creating almost perfect conditions for surfers year round. World Champion Kelly Slater surfs here regularly and has deemed Bathsheba to be one of his favorite spots to surf in the world. It’s a coastline carved by centuries of wind blowing from thousands of miles away, great gusts of salty air like tempests heaved by the gods. One can sit watching the swells curl into massive walls of water and when it’s breaking ‘clean’ people come here and stand on the beach to watch…it’s pure magic! Surfing is not the only attraction these shores have to offer. After a quick respite of yummy flying fish and a sweet cocktail at the Round House you can take a stroll through the local and very colorful craft market where you can purchase some local arts and crafts or, if you are lucky, have your photo taken with a baby green monkey. Further along the coast you encounter the Cattlewash experience. A traditional summer retreat, this amazing stretch of coastline is dotted with beach cottages and is home to the famous ‘Barbados Pool’, a tidal pool in the shape of our island home. The recently built Santosha is an apartment hotel which offers guests a relaxing stay nestled against the hills and overlooking the rolling Atlantic Ocean. A large pool and Jacuzzi deck area is available to rent for private functions, weddings and yoga retreats. The name Santosha comes from the Sanskrit word for ‘contentment’ and perfectly describes these luxury one bedroom and studio apartments boasting wide verandahs opening onto the panoramic views of the beach. “ This girl has a bronzed glow on her skin as if she’s been surfing in the ocea n a nd has enjoyed every bit of su nshine” EYES: Start by lining the eyes with Copper Strip and Lifes Luxury - I used both colors because one is slightly darker in colour which makes the eyes more intense. Once lined, smudge liner blending it out toward outer corner with brush 219. Next apply bronzing powder in Refined Golden on crease and outer corner of eyes. Set with two coats of False Lashes waterproof mascara. Apply Bare My Soul in the inner corner of eyes, and on top of that blended liner you first applied use a bit of Friendly eye shadow with brush 217. This will set that color and give it more intensity. SKIN: Start with Mineralized foundation blended softly onto skin. On high points such as temples, cheekbones and cupids bow apply Strobe Liquid all over. Blend with brush 224. Add Bronzer in Refined Golden onto cheekbones and set a bit of Ripe For Love powder blush on apples of cheeks for that sun kissed look. LIPS: Finish lips with Feel My Pulse and Rhythm lipgloss on lips for that finishing touch. I unpacked and after lunch I could barely decide whether to just laze the day away or take full advantage of everything that this all inclusive resort has to offer. Tennis, kayaking, Pilates, yoga and windsurfing to name just a few, a golf course is a stone’s throw away, there is so much to enjoy and I was eager to explore. I figured I had to walk off the calories anyway after the sumptuous lunch at La Trattoria… a three-course Italian affair! Seven expansive pools, the beach, a fully equipped gym and three other restaurants; Asian, International and Creole were at my disposal as well as the recently opened Namaste Spa, which was most definitely on my ‘menu!’ Spa Director Ariel Jacobson is dedicated to health and wellness and has plans for the continued improvement and upgrade to these related facilities and programs. Some of his plans are the installation of a Juice Bar facility, bringing in a nutritionist to customise clients’ meal plans and introducing more healthy options on the restaurants’ menus. Also in the pipeline are Zumba classes and the addition of a fitness trail around the property, perfect for those who like to take their work-out outdoors! After a leisurely stroll and a refreshing swim I was already starting to feel the stress and tension slip away. I decided to change early for dinner so that I could enjoy the local libations at the Waves Bar and watch the sun retreat in all her spectacular glory below the horizon. Dinner I decided would be a Creole affair at the Waterside Grill and after yet another sublime meal and a show in the Piton Lounge, bed summoned and sweet dreams followed shortly after. Day two brought a healthy combination of exploration and relaxation, a morning trip into Castries Vendors Market followed by lunch back at the hotel. Dessert today would not be the tempting dark chocolate tart of the day before; I had booked a Shirodosha Massage… a full body massage flowing into a deep pressure point scalp massage as dosha oils

As I headed to the airport and the sun set on my last day in St Lucia I knew I would be back to re-visit her many charms. Smugglers Cove is fun for families, perfect for a romantic getaway or ‘girls only’ weekend! are poured at the top of the forehead; pure ecstacy! The Spa staff are professional and highly trained and a partnership with luxury spa and skincare line Elemis truly makes the experience a sheer indulgence. An in-house salon completes the package with hair, nail, makeup and waxing services. I left the Spa totally blissed out and headed straight for a lie down on a lounger beachside until sunset. After dinner I headed out to Delirius, in the popular Rodney Bay area with some new found friends to sample the local bar scene and where we stayed out way too late for our own good. Fortunately the next day’s agenda brought with it healthy recovery. Early next morning I headed to the gym to shake off the slightly fuzzy head from the night before and then headed out to join a catamaran cruise… destination? The majestic Pitons and the Mud Baths, a natural spa pool fed by the therapeutic sulphuric rich 38.7 degree Celcius hot waters from the Soufriere volcano. The ritual is simple, get in hot bath (take photo) get out and cover yourself from head to toe in volcanic mud (strike a pose and definitely take photo), back in hot bath and wash off (photo optional)…. the result is silky clean skin and a rosy glow. After a delicious local Creole lunch in the beautiful hills of Soufriere it was time to get back to the boat for some snorkeling before sailing back up the coast and on to Smugglers Cove for a beach barbeque dinner. Zip Line was in store for me today and I headed to the hills for this exhilarating tree top experience; I had now experienced St. Lucia fully by air, land and sea. Perhaps because of my ‘au naturel’ spa experience the day before I was eager to head back to Namaste for another pampering session and Ariel recommended an Exotic Moisture Dew Facial. This begins with a facial massage with thirst quenching actives which leave your skin nourished and healthy…a girl could get used to this! My last evening in St Lucia and I decided I would head to the adults only restaurant Café Asia to indulge in some Chinese, Thai and Japenese culinary delights. The recommended duck did not disappoint,it was cooked to succulent perfection and accompanied by one of my favorites, spicy rice noodles. An early morning rise and I headed to the Gym pool for an Aqua aerobics session, low impact but high energy and loads of fun. Time for one last date at Namaste Spa as I wasn’t yet fully satiated. A Muscle Ease Aroma Spa Ocean Wrap would be just what I needed to send a new and improved relaxed me back home. This deeply detoxifying seaweed treatment decongests,detoxifys and stimulates the system inside and out. Ever let your imagination freely fly into a future life and conjure up your ideal home? If you are a day dreamer you could probably create a fantasy dwelling space that’s out of this world, but if you are a designer with a plan, strong motivation and a capacity to turn a dream into actuality you might produce a real and fully sustainable dream home like Sugarwater. Fraser Young is a young designer and business man with a background in the offshore sector, an entrepreneur and eco-warrior. It is this combination of facets that has obviously influenced the production of the much talked about new house on the block. The ‘block’ being Apes Hill located inland on the west coast of the island in St James, Barbados’ newest and most prestigious gated community. The ‘talk’ is that Sugarwater is “Net Zero” living, fully sustainable and that it has been constructed out of recycled, reclaimed and reinvented materials. One wonders if it is one of those whacko pep bottle and tyre type houses and what is it doing in such a place as this. So on the meandering drive up through this carefully cultivated landscape you may be expecting something wooden and green with a roof full of solar panels or some such stereotype idea of eco living. Look again…on a downward slope at the edge of a small gully a clean grey tiled roof peeks out from behind high walls. Electric gates slide open to reveal a cool crème coral stone exterior which doesn’t immediately disclose the grand scale of this thoroughly modern building or all the elements of sustainability and explicit, purposeful design. Who was the Architect? Who built it?, one asks; the answer is Jeremy Gunn, Architect and Sigma Construction Inc. Back to the designer – Fraser – make a note of his name because he is undoubtedly a pioneer here attempting to carve a path and change the future of design, construction and life-style in Barbados. construction of Sugarwater Fraser has made visible his revolutionary ideas and high ideals of sustainable, ‘green’ living, demonstrating these as possible with the utmost of style, taste and contemporary chic. Every feature has been meticulously planned and researched and materials carefully sourced from companies committed to ethical green practices. The structure is flawless, unfussy, clean, and practical and every facet is designed with the intention to be energy efficient and sustainable. The cobblestone walkway at front is created by The Old Brick Factory, a local company manufacturing ballast bricks using molds of the originals and reused concrete and sand. Walk over the yellow brick road and enter a magical future kingdom that looks wide, spacious and larger than life. The immediate awareness is of spaciousness… a high vaulted ceiling and the outdoors merging into indoors, an effect achieved simply because there are no walls! Its absolutely brilliant… Remote controlled roller shutters can at the touch of a button, enclose the open plan kitchen and living room area or open it up and invite the sky and the trees in. The supersized, butcher’s block island is made of reclaimed local red mahogany wood and divides the kitchen and living areas, this is illuminated by huge industrial light fixtures… the lights throughout the house are LED. It is the ideal kitchen with high-end industrial appliances and the fridge, wine cooler and cupboards fitting flush in a seamless finish. A huge mirror with a frame of natural driftwood, designed by Interior Decorator, Nicola Atwell of Bella Casa was built by Darrin Rapson of Tropical Furnishings who created many of the wooden furnishings here. Gaze out onto the saline infinity pool, a massive water feature stretching along the length of the house from one end by the dining area to the master bedroom from where, the romantic hand-made 4 poster mahogany bed, one can take two steps into the non-chlorinated water for an early morning dip.

Nearly every element of the house is an environmentally conscious creation making a purposeful statement. The wide, oversized jalousie windows are made of eucalyptus wood which is a natural repellant to insects. The tiles throughout the house are made of reconstructed old porcelain tiles, ground and reinvented to create a whole new slab effect and available locally at Tile Gallery. The roof’s girders are built to last, made from recycled imported steel they can withstand a grade 3 hurricane and are also termite resistant. Glass walled showers in the shiny tiled bathrooms are inviting but the outdoor tub surely captures the imagination… bubbles under a moonlit night sky, oh my…the dream weaver has certainly cast a sweet spell! Yet still not forgetting the practical sustainable aspect - the toilets are flushed with water captured by a powder coated, seamless aluminum guttering which runs around the perimeter of the roof and collects rain water in a 30,000 gallon underground catchment. This can provide all the water requirements for toilets, shower, laundry, orchard and garden. All paint used was no VOC and supplied by Eco-Breeze. Oh the garden! Fraser admits the garden or ‘edible landscape’ is his favorite feature. This garden is more than just a pretty place, purely decorative gardens may well become a thing of the past. Utilizing green space productively and economically while still being pleasing to the eye are constant key factors. A variety of organic foods - pumpkins, zucchini, kale, beans, tomatoes etc even pineapples and strawberries grow abundantly in rich organic soil and would greatly reduce the house dweller’s grocery bill. An orchard of fruit trees in the gully alongside is still in planning stage. This is sustainability in action and Fraser’s other passion, organic farming, which he sees as a way forward not only for individual home owners but for Barbados as a whole. We also can’t overlook the solar voltaic panels which are ground mounted to conform with the community design restrictions in a discreet designated area in the yard providing nearly all the household’s power requirements… hence the term “Net Zero” which means practically no utility bills for the rest of your life! Fraser says “I have worked with over 25 local companies to create my living examples of sustainability. They have all embraced the education and ideas that I have brought to them, seen the opportunity and in turn started to grow their businesses. I have worked to create a network of individual companies whose services both support and compliment each other”. A PERSONABLE AND MULTI TALENTED LANDSCAPE DESIGNER RICHARD ARCHER OF VIRIDIS HAS CREATED A STUNNING AND ELEGANT GARDEN AT ANDREWS GREAT HOUSE AND LETS LIVING BARBADOS MAGAZINE IN ON HIS PLANTING TECHNIQUES.

Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Great House was built in 1923 as a managers house for Andrews Sugar Factory, thought to be the longest running sugar factory in the western hemisphere. The house has been a second home to the Elias family since 1973 and was recently renovated under the architectural direction of Michael Gomes Associates. Mrs. Penny and Ms. Charlotte Elias were the main contributors to the landscape design process on the client side, with Mrs. Christine Millar providing input and advice from her vast experience in the arts.

As it was a historic renovation, it was decided to use mainly traditional ornamental plants in the garden renovation, many of which were salvaged and re-used from the original garden. Some of the original Crotons were dug up and placed in the Viridis nursery and variegated Dracaenas were also salvaged and propagated from cuttings. Scions from an ancient Sago palm found in the original garden were also kept and planted in the scheme later. Original Heliconias, Ginger Lilies and other flowering shrubs were replaced into the new landscape design after the reshaping of planting beds and lawns. One of the client’s mandates was to have uninterrupted views through Mahogany trees to the east of the property which had a dense undergrowth. As it was cleared out it was discovered that the old grove of trees actually frames the full moon as it rises, a view enjoyed from the newly built east gallery and a ‘happy accident’

of the garden renovation. The rest of the new garden frames that focal point with colour, texture and vertical interest. Against the darker shaded areas of the copse of trees, bright contrasting shrubs such as Silver Dollars, yellow sprays of the perpetual flowers on the Shower-of-Gold and several varieties of Pseuderanthemum were used. Yellow Shrimp plants placed in the mixed bed plantings played with the yellow colour palette but with a variation in shape, texture and scale of the blooms. The wide variegated leaves in pink white and red of the old Dracaenas provide textural and colour contrast, as well as variety of scale. The colours of the house, by Harris Paints, are a custom mixed tone of green on the exterior walls and a strong deep red on the roof and are unusual in Barbados plantation houses, but very effectively used here to convey gravitas. The colours of the plantings close to the house were chosen to compliment rather than compete with them. One of the plants used to the best effect in those areas are the Clerodendrons, popping out against the dark slate green of the house with its big bold leaves and bright scarlet sprays of flowers. Some of the specimen plants used in the design are newer varieties, non traditional for a plantation house such as the dramatic Foxtail Palms, only discovered in 1975, and the Australian Flame Thrower Palm, renowned for displaying its new leaves in a fiery unfurling show. A pair of dramatic silver grey Bizmarkia Fan Palms now stand sentinel among the old Royal Palms in the north gardens. Original specimen plants such as the large Sago Palm, mature Golden Palm and an old, rampant golden Chalice Vine were kept to great effect and spoke to the permanence of the place even in the face of change. For colour and texture, filler plants were used in mixed bed scenarios such as Acalypha varieties, Texas Sage for a bright pop and dwarf Elephant Ears to give a different scale and form. Borders and edging relied heavily on old stalwarts such as varieties of Cuffia, Hemigraphis alternata, a purple low growing plant with a green metallic highlights and Pilea macrocarpa otherwise known as ‘Never Dead’, which gives a nice mounded textured border. Mondo grass, Portulaccas, Moses-in-a-Basket and Flax Lilies completed the border palette. Other traditional plants used were Beefsteak Acalypha, Plumbago, Crotons, some of which were propagated in the nursery, some exotic ones brought in for added variety of colour and leaf shape. A large flowering Thunbergia hedge was kept to retain privacy between the gazebo and formal garden. Plants in the scheme along the pathway with the Cleredondrons are Star Jasmine, Flax Lilies used to brighten the way and a pair of white Mussaenda designed to create an arch of white blooms over the entrance to the pool deck. The Rose garden along the west gallery was a special request of the client as they love the colour, form and scent of the blooms. The Roses were used to under plant a trio of Foxtail Palms in a soft stone planter. The new Rose bushes were all propagated with the help of Christine Millar using cocoa moss brought from Trinidad for the air layering technique of propagation. From one original rose bush planted by the pool many years ago, 20 plants were produced for the front and west galleries, to be enjoyed by all who approach the house. In the turning circle of the driveway a purple Orchid Tree was under planted with a mass purple bloomed Iris, whose long greed blades echo the look and movement of the sugar canes, now almost gone form the surrounding landscape. Magenta Portulacas, or ‘Rock Roses’ edge the scheme and hang over the salvaged soft stone blocks used for the circle. To the north of the house, a two acre orchard has been planted with fifty new fruit trees including many varieties of citrus, mango, banana and mammy apple. Species exotic to Barbados were also planted in the new orchard, such as the African Baobab, the ‘Tree Of Life’, and one of each Rambutan and Duku trees were also planted. The intention behind the new orchard was to provide a legacy of fruit to future generations. A number of Royal Palms growing wild on the location were transplanted to more appropriate locations in the landscape, children of the majestic, century old specimens planted by Mr. Robert ‘Laddie’ Challenor and Mr. Harold Wright in 1923, and likely to be standing there in 2123.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED? I will like to be remembered as someone who positively impacted the lives of all Caribbean people through my profession. To those close to me, a good father, brother and friend. TELL US ABOUT BRIAN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 6-12? I was a sports fanatic who always had to be playing something - cricket, football, table tennis, etc. Academically okay but recreation was of utmost importance. I also learnt a lot during those impressionable years from my ten brothers and sisters. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE A HOME IN BARBADOS? Ebworth is more than a home, it’s an old plantation house sitting on a ridge overlooking the west coast of Barbados surrounded by 18 acres (see images on left and right). I saw it as an investment in years to come. Personally I enjoy being in Barbados and of all the people in the Caribbean, I feel like I have a closer relationship with Barbadians outside of my home country. HOW DO YOU ENJOY YOUR TIME IN BARBADOS? Golf and more golf! There are beautiful golf courses all over the Caribbean but here I’m spoilt with 3 amazing courses; Sandy Lane Golf Club, Apes Hill as well as Royal Westmoreland. A morning swim on one of the west coast beaches is a must and the restaurants... their food and service is second to none.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS YOU WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN? Definitely to respect their elders. Forgiveness is a character trait that everyone has but don’t necessarily employ, there is going to come a time when people or events disappoint them and learning to forgive and move on is the only way your mind is going to be at peace. I want my kids to also live their lives to the fullest and have no regrets. What made you first come to Barbados? We had spent many summers in the south of France and fancied a change. We looked for somewhere with reliable warm weather and access to fantastic beaches. What made you decide to go from renter to buyer? We rented when we were in full time employment and were only able to get a limited time off. We are now able to spend more time in Barbados and so it made sense to buy rather than rent. How did you find Prudence and what was it that attracted you to the property? We found Prudence with the help of Worldwide Dream Villas whose staff spent a lot of time showing us a selection of properties in Barbados and explained the general background of each one. To use that little known phrase, there were three things that attracted us to Prudence, location, location and location. Also when we first saw Prudence, even in its tired state, we recognised it as an absolute gem. You have remodelled and extended Prudence into a fabulous 8 bedroom house which I am sure had its challenges but have you found that you received good advice from professionals and tradesmen here? The Architects, Robertson Ward Associates (RWA) was recommended by a friend who had already built in Barbados. RWA is well established and we were very fortunate in finding two excellent builders, one for the cottage and one for the main house. The builders both employed highly skilled artisans. Barbados has some very competent masons, joiners/cabinet makers, electricians and painters which we were very pleased to have working on Prudence. Both the professionals and the tradesmen have their idiosyncractic way of working which, as you’d expect, is unique to Barbados. Worldwide Dream Villas were also helpful in pointing us in the right direction in a number of areas including designing for rentals. You have decided to also offer the house for rental when you’re

not enjoying it –what features would you say make this an ideal house to rent? Prudence is located on a private road that is only a three minutes stroll to the beach and sits amongst some of the finest houses on the West coast in Old Queen’s Fort. H.O.R.S.E â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Humane Organisation for the Relief of Suffering Equines was founded to improve the welfare of all horses in Barbados. They offer us so much unconditionally and add to many aspects of our lives, whether it is through their part in sport tourism, providing leisure rides to our visitors, working in our police force or just by being faithful companions to their human counterparts. In exchange we are responsible to care for them and give them the best lives possible. Unfortunately, we all know this does not always happen, daily we see horses tied up in unsuitable places. Often starving and without water and frequently with wounds as a result of neglect and ignorance with disregard to correct horse care. H.O.R.S.E. wants to approach this problem from many angles as it recognizes that almost all of these horses were at one time in good condition and of value to someone. For one reason or another they were deemed no longer useful or perhaps the person could no longer afford the financial responsibility. Horses require a great deal of time, effort and money to look after them. The minimum cost for providing the basic care for a horse is approximately $700 per month. They need specialty care, shoeing, worming and they also need a proper work to feed ratio depending on their career. Should these majestic animals be a passion of yours, be prepared for all that comes with them, be fully informed of what is needed to be a responsible horse owner. A part of being a responsible horse owner is having a plan for the future of your horse if you can no longer support it - this is where H.O.R.S.E. comes to the rescue. One of our objectives is to assist in finding suitable homes and solutions to this difficult question. Often a horse is given to someone who is completely unable to care for it either financially or they have no knowledge in caring for horses. longer fulfill their obligation and the horse is then passed on to someone who is unable to care for it. H.O.R.S.E. is setting itself up to take on this responsibility and ensure that horses do not end up in these appalling situations. H.O.R.S.E. will serve to save horses that have been abandoned and neglected. The Sanctuary is located in a tranquil location in St Thomas where, thanks to our generous landlord, we have a place to rehabilitate and temporarily house horses in need until we can find them suitable homes. We are also striving to bring in veterinary equipment and make facilities available to the local vets and other equine professionals to help maintain the horses that are presently active so they do not break down and become deemed useless. Another goal is to work on the existing legislation so cruelty to these noble animals may be justly handled. Horse Chefette sponsored Spin The Wheel was a hit with the kids identification is a priority as it is crucial that we be able to investigate how they ended up in dire situations. Our inaugural event for H.O.R.S.E. charity registered charity no 993 was held on March 23rd 2013 and we are delighted to report it was a wonderful success. The event was designed to showcase as many horse careers as possible and there was a huge show of support from the public, horse lovers, corporate Barbados and all of the equine sports in Barbados. Showjumping, dressage and polo were all on display and a special exhibition from the Royal Barbados Police Force Mounted Division accompanied by the Police Band made this an extremely special day. Historic Colleton Great House For Sale Sir John Colleton, a Royalist in England who had fought for Charles I, bought this purchase of land in Barbados, sight unseen, in 1647 paying £10 and 24,000lbs of tobacco. Colleton estates prospered with the fortunes of Barbados subject always to natural disasters and European wars. After the hurricanes of the 18th century, very few pre 1800 buildings survived in their original form; Colleton House was one of the few exceptions due to its thick walls and parapet styled roof. In the 1980’s Colleton House and grounds was bought by Mr. Frank Rickwood; an Australian oil tycoon with a great interest in the artifacts of Papua, New Guinea. He had spent his early career traversing this part of the world in pursuit of oil on behalf of the Australian Petroleum Company in the mid-1940s. Mr. Rickwood maintained the original façade of all of the buildings at Colleton, and as much of the original interiors as possible, and transformed the old stables into his own personal museum housing some 460 artifacts from Papua New Guinea - The Frank Rickwood Collection at Colleton House reflects the wide and eclectic taste of the collector. It is rare to find such varied, interesting and exceptional items in one collection and it remains intact at Colleton Plantation today. In 1994, Frank Rickwood settled into his home at Colleton in Barbados for good and spent his remaining years under the Caribbean sun.
