Apes Hill Club Recognized for Environmental Excellence
14
LIVING BARBADOS DECEMBER 2010 - MARCH 2011
Apes Hill Club - Barbados’ newest golf and polo community has been recognized for its commitment to environmental protection by The Audubon Sanctuary Program – the most prestigious environmental award for golf courses. The club, located on one of the highest points in Barbados opened its 18 hole championship course in 2009 and is being developed by local businessman Sir Charles Williams and American Developers Landmark Land. Spanning over 470 acres the club features endless tropical ravines, ponds, and tropical foliage and pride themselves on environmental protection. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia have also achieved certification in the program. According to Jim Sluiter from Audubon “Apes Hill Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property”. To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. Apes Hill have been praised for their protection of natural wildlife including green monkeys and protected birds. Along with that the course is planted with a salt resistant grass called paspalum– because of this salt based products can be used instead of harsh chemical pesticides and fertilizers. For irrigation Apes Hill Club uses run-off rain water caught in their two reservoirs. This assists in the conservation of the fresh water resources on the island. Edward Paskins, Course Superintendent at Apes Hill, has led the effort to obtain sanctuary status on this course along with Environmental Officer Ryan Chenry. Ryan reinforced that Apes Hill is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the environment and that their involvement with the Audubon has been instrumental in their commitment of being a responsible environmental steward. “Audubon International provided us with a template upon which to model our conservation and preservation efforts. We have undertaken numerous projects specifically designed to significantly reduce the ecological footprint. These efforts have been examined by and met with the approval of Audubon International and have resulted in our certification status,” explained Ryan. As a non-profit organization Audubon International is an internationally recognized for their dedication to sustainable development. They provide persons/institutions with the education and assistance needed to practice responsible management of land, water, wildlife and natural resources. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programme for golf courses is designed to give golf course managers the information and guidance they need to implement stewardship projects and receive recognition for their efforts. Apes Hill Club is in the 2% of golf courses in the world to be certified as a Cooperative Sanctuary. For more information on golf and the environment, visit www.golfandenvironment.org. In addition to golf courses, Audubon International also provides programs for businesses, schools, communities, and new developments. For more information, contact Audubon International, 46 Rarick Rd., Selkirk, NY 12158, USA, (518) 767-9051, e-mail them via the Internet at acsp@auduboninternational.org, or visit their website at www.auduboninternational.org. Home Sweet Home Photos by Sean Chandler, Jake Thomas and Linda Lewis-Bishton
Who says you can’t have the best of both worlds? A gracious country home in an urban location affording its inhabitants the luxury of country living in close proximity to both Bridgetown and the South Coast of Barbados? Sweetfield Manor offers all of this and more! By Rachel Ramphal This peaceful oasis sits on the Britton’s Hill ridge with sweeping views of the South Coast from Hastings, around Needham’s Point and up to Carlisle Bay and the Bridgetown Port, including the historic Garrison area. A long driveway draws you away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and envelops you within an acre of peaceful seclusion. Built in 1900, Sweetfield Manor is a graceful two-storey home built in the Caribbean Georgian style with many of the features synonymous with plantation homes; portico entry, sash windows with pelmets and jalousie shutters, crown moldings, an enclosed wrap-around verandah, large spacious living and dining rooms and thick coral-stone walls. Presently an award-winning Bed and Breakfast, the current owner is a first generation American with Barbadian roots going back to the first settlers to land in Holetown in the 1600s. The manor was previously called Beaulieu and was built by Waldemar Hanschell, a wealthy Danish merchant. Hanschell went on to establish a successful shipping business known today as the large import/export company Hanschell Inniss. The house has undergone thoughtful renovations by the present owners; outside the living room an open gallery was expanded to include a bar and outdoor lounge which sits above lush terraced gardens. This wonderful outdoor area affords the same spectacular views across Carlisle Bay. A well-appointed kitchen with generous proportions boasts the original 28-inch thick walls and polished clay floor tiles. Juxtaposed with these are a gleaming granite island and counter tops with a

white subway tile backsplash. Taupe coloured cabinets and stove hood add a French country style and a butler’s pantry provides for additional storage and workspace. The grand Mahogany spindle staircase leads upstairs where three large and breezy bedrooms (one en-suite) are located. The bedrooms have been decorated in antique, tropical modern or a breezy and casual island style. Original pine flooring throughout the main house has been painstakingly refinished and bathrooms updated in a classic decor. The upstairs windows look out beyond to the sea or into the tops of mature trees such as the fiery-flowered Flamboyant, majestic Mahogany and the lilac blooms of the Spanish Ash with modern plantings of palms, heliconias and feather grass below. Formally servants’ quarters, one out-building now boasts two separate guest suites each with their own deck and, with rope-suspended daybeds offers the perfect shady spot for relaxation. Steps away, a lagoon pool and spa have been cleverly tucked beneath a coral rock outcrop complete with a waterfall, natural boulder edging and tropical plantings. Banana and coconut trees attract thirsty hummingbirds and bananaquits who dance around this nectar-laden feast. Adjacent and upstairs to the guest cottage an observation deck is a perfect spot to look out for the ubiquitous green monkeys or to just enjoy a cocktail while the sun sets and the

moon rises. Departing cruise ships are also enjoyed from this vantage point, twinkling lights revealing their passage out of the picturesque harbour. You are surrounded here by a ceiling of stars and a symphony of whistling tree frogs…very romantic! A third building on the property (originally the horse stables and carriage house) has thick, soaring walls, open ceilings with exposed wood beams and houses a fully selfcontained and spacious one bedroom cottage. Entering through what was previously a small tack/feed room, (now a cozy media room); the eye is drawn up to twin loft beds accessed by a ladder. A master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and a compact yet efficient kitchen leads onto a private dining deck. Sweetfield offers the ultimate in a family home, with plenty of space for kids to frolic and accommodations for house guests, the Manor is also perfect for hosting intimate dinners, lavish parties or official receptions, this fine home definitely is the best of both worlds!
Sweetfield Manor is currently on the market for sale at US$2,350,000 – Listed exclusively with Terra Caribbean, and can be viewed by appointment only. Please call (246) 434-9000 or visit www.terracaribbean.com

Everything You Desire When the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre opens its doors in December locals and visitors alike will have access to an exciting new level of luxury and sophistication.

Kartushe
Situated in historic Holetown this mixed-use centre houses 85,000 square feet of shopping, dining, business and leisure activities housed in twelve separate buildings. Built around three main courtyards, and linked via walkways, the centre is designed to encourage pedestrians to explore all there is on offer. The Water Court features an impressive thirty five foot water wall and Zen inspired surroundings while the Palm Court and Garden Court are of a more traditional design with the use of coral stone, wood and brickwork. The Limegrove Lifestyle Centre is the vision of Paul Altman who, inspired by Bal Harbour, saw this as an opportunity to set Barbados apart from the other Caribbean islands as a major tourist destination. Many local businesses were employed in this development including Robertson Ward Associates, Oran, Environmental Planning Group, ITech Consulting and Rotherley Construction, to name just a few. Architect Doug Luke of Gillespie and Steel brought a sensitive approach to the design, taking into account the location and seeking to embrace the surroundings with low level buildings, wide pavements and easy access into the popular 1st and 2nd Streets. A calming palette that echoes the colour of the Caribbean sea; blues, greens and creams punctuated with timeless black, mirrored and metallic finishes make for sophisticated and serene slumber...
4 Poster Bed & Bedding: A modern take on a tradi-
tional classic; this sleek four poster bed in a black laquered finish offers a seriously stylish and timeless backdrop for almost any bedding. We chose soft, tonal velvet stripes on a muted gold woven background to give a sophisticated touch of elegance, especially when contrasted with a classic rococo pattern in luxurious cut velvet on a shimmering jacquard. Blend these with something more simple such as this lattice-quilted sateen coverlet in a warm cream to compliment the gold undertones of the cushions and throw, meanwhile accentuating the sharp lines of this beautiful bed.
Side Tables: Tall mirrored glass sidetables afford this
look a graceful lightness. Their reflective quality gives a neutral backdrop for whatever you choose to dress them with. Here we have used a clamrose shell lamp for texture along with a mirrored frame and blue coral candleholder to tie in with the other elements in the room.
Accessories: A comtemporary style accent lamp in a
silver finish works well when softened beside this pretty arrangement of off-white hydrangeas. A murano glass shell pops with a turquoise interior to give a subtle nod to the deeper colours featured in the bedding. The luxurious feel throughout is amplified by an original signed shell print. It’s mirrored frame makes for a strong contrast against the rugged coralstone walls. Who wouldn’t want breakfast in bed or tea for two, especically when served on something as beautiful as this painted gold and mirror tray.

Beachfront Bliss Photos compliments of Saint Peter’s Bay
“It doesn’t get better than this.” What an understatement! Saint Peter’s Bay is quite simply the nearest thing to heaven on earth. Luxurious beach front residences offer up uninterrupted views of the crystal clear waters of the West Coast while the amenities and services available invite you to simply relax, kick back and enjoy the life. Each residence boasts a generous open plan living area with spacious terraces and a private spa pool. The layout makes beautiful use of the natural light; By Julie Murphy balconies provide spectacular views without sacrificing privacy, and the interior features coral moldings and white washed cedar woodwork. A unique feature of the homes is the beach lift, taking you straight from patio to pool-side, allowing residents to mingle at the bar, relax in the breezy gazebo or enjoy the sunset with their toes in the sand! With a private gym; state of the art hair and beauty salon and concierge service, residents may be tempted to simply ‘stay in’, but it’s the location of Saint Peter’s Bay on the island and the accompanying lifestyle that makes it truly the ‘Caribbean dream‘. Owners also benefit from an exclusive membership to the Port St. Charles Yacht Club, a “member’s only” club that offers casual dining and a change of scenery, though sparkling water, white sands and gorgeous mega yachts also feature heavily in the view, really one can never have enough of it. Another remarkable element of the lifestyle Saint Peter’s Bay has to offer is it’s own private Water Taxi service, providing a breathtaking ocean ride to the Port St. Charles Yacht Club and historic Speightstown. One could be forgiven for forgetting just where the main entrance is!
Designed by acclaimed architect Ian Morrison, the 57 private residences practically absorb the view into every room.

If Saint Peter’s Bay is heaven on earth, the surrounding towns and villages provide the celestial backdrop. Speightstown boasts an old-world style, offering a laid back colonial charm mingled with modern amenities, a true taste of ‘old Barbados’ that visitors and residents in other parts of the island rarely get to experience. If desired every day could be passed browsing the local boutiques and art galleries and enjoying succulent beach front dining and lazy happy hours. Developer Bjorn Bjerkhamn has always maintained that Barbados is the most beautiful place on the earth and his commitment to the island’s prosperity goes beyond the property field. The neighboring area surrounding the residences is gradually being upgraded, and Saint Peter’s Bay has invested in the local community, supporting education, local sports and artists, and incorporating Barbadian culture into the design and décor of the residences. The residences are indeed a rare gem for the discerning investor, and show homes are now open to potential buyers so they may get a sense of the quality and atmosphere the property exudes. Archer’s Hall, Interior Designers for the residences have captured the exclusive Caribbean lifestyle in the showrooms with spectacular mosaic mirrors, framed local photographs, striking sculptures and cool island hues that breathe a sense of pure serenity throughout. Truly Saint Peter’s Bay is the very best Barbados has to offer, it really doesn’t get better than this. Bonjour Barbados Photos compliments of CIDesign Inc.
Trained in the Classics, Meniaud is a 3rd generation interior decorator who now brings his European influences to the private villas and residences of the prestigious West Coast of Barbados. By Julie Murphy Guillaume Meniaud of Caribbean Interior Design has been raised with decorating in his blood. His father, Jean Yves Meniaud, was a designer with the world renown Maison Jansen of Paris in the 60’s, the most celebrated decorating house of the 20th century and he has continued in his footsteps. “I never questioned it, it surrounded me.” he explains. In 1985 he took over his father’s operations in the town of Beaulieu Sur Mer on the French Riviera. As the business expanded to include many overseas projects, he relocated to Switzerland in 2004 and then Barbados in 2008. Caribbean Interior Design was officially opened in September 2008 and Guillaume heads up a team of five from his office in Holetown, St. James. He is clearly very passionate about his work. It could be a small project, say a bathroom or lounge, or it could be a hotel. It isn’t the size of the project but the interest of the project itself that keeps his focus, and while the majority of his work in the island are for elite private clientele, his last project was the famous “The Sands” at Sandy Lane.
“I worked with architect Larry Warren and Jo Steinbock from Rotherley Construction from the inception and it really was exciting. The design was amazing! We wanted to achieve a unique level of finishes, and I was involved on every single detail of the construction and design process.” Guillaume explains that “The Sands”, like his private projects, was so focused on the quality of the finishes, with clients who were extremely involved and every minute feature was sourced or designed specifically for the residences, down to the hardware for the doors which he designed himself. Indeed, rather than arriving at an empty shell he is often involved in creating the spaces he has to decorate, thus enabling him to improve and optimize every detail. “The project is my first concern always, as it allows me to build and design something, advancing the ideas of my clients and bringing my ideas to it, while my background naturally influences the designs to stay chic and interesting.” “At the end of the day, I do not think that people in Barbados are looking for a colonial style always. Many

of my clients here have a very open mind in terms of style and décor. The classical style gives the base but many modern projects can have a reflection of those classic styles too.” What makes Caribbean Interior Design truly unique is their attention to detail. Meniaud explains this service is not one typically offered by most contractors. “We bring specialists from all over France, Italy and Spain to assist us with the finer details. Especially painting, paneling, cabinetry and upholstery.” The specificity of his services, compared to large companies means he doesn’t often have very many projects ongoing at the same time. “We work in so much detail, selecting, sourcing everything from furniture and paintings to the trimming and design of the upholstery, these things are very detailed, so really we must be very focused on the project.” His dream is to eventually set up an international showroom here in Barbados to present and teach the local market about these details. “The final idea is to
60

expand the company so all this sourcing can take place here in Barbados.” An interesting and very detailed project in itself but he doesn’t have a deadline for this “It will flow, but I see everything available in the showroom, where we will have the capacity to conceptualize and simply proceed with turnkey concepts.” Guillaume says he is finding it exciting working with other professionals in the island overall. “I find it most interesting working with these clients and others in my field here, because even though we all have knowledge of the same subject, I am learning more about the way things are done here, which is so very different from Europe. And of course, there is the life Barbados has to offer, it’s a fantastic time.” Indeed, there is always so much more potential in the island and certainly the plans lead to him being far busier in the future, but for now Guillaume is content to bring his touch to the private homes of his exclusive clientele and enjoy the island life while he does this.
