Trends in Kitchens Main photo at top of the page is an update on the old classic Viking Professional look which when combined with the use of colour, is striking. The fully integrated stainless steel Bosch and Gaggenau kitchen (middle) is very contemporary, combining the use of wall ovens, cook top and an integrated bottom mount refrigerator and wine cooler. The induction cook top (left), with its energy efficiency, kitchen geek appeal and growing reputation for power and precision, may be the iPad of the kitchen. Induction cooking, which relies on an electromagnet to heat iron or steel cookware, is still a mystery to many cooks. An electrical current produces a magnetic field that excites iron molecules and heats the pan and its contents. Induction cook tops are much more energy efficient than gas or electric because they cook food faster and lose less heat in the process. We look forward to demonstrating this to you at Wolseley. Call 427-0580 for more details or visit our showroom at Canewood Industrial Estate, St. Michael. 66

Ashore Thing Location! Location! Location! The famous age old mantra of the real estate market still remains relevant today and among the most vied for locations are beachfront properties. Barbados offers just over seventy miles of oceanfront coastline and limited availability of this precious commodity means that these properties command a premium price. The Platinum coast of the island offers some of the most attractive real estate in the world with calm warm waters and many amenities in close proximity. What makes beachfront property so desirable? Tranquility and natural beauty abound and the beach offers an almost endless variety of recreation for all ages. The lapping of the waves on the shore, soft powdery sand between your toes and what better view to have than the unforgettable vivid colours of sky and sea from dawn to dusk followed by the magic of the moonlight. The beach offers an escape like no other away from the stress of our daily urban lives. A beachfront property may be the primary residence or a holiday home, offering the property owner the ultimate get away as well as opportunity of a rental income. In terms of investment, ocean front properties will almost certainly increase exponentially in value. Of course all beachfront properties are not created equal so when you are looking to purchase your own little piece of heaven whether it be a condo, apartment or villa be sure to seek the advice of a trusted real estate company such as Altman Real Estate.
The beach offers an escape like no other away from the stress of our daily urban lives. It calms down the nerves to keep one feeling refreshed and energized.

The balcony runs the entire length of the building, providing one of the most expansive sea views on the island. It brings with it all of the benefits of apartment living but in a very small complex, so it feels like a private home. Essentially, it offers the best of both worlds.

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2011 - MARCH 2012
The strong ties binding Jenny Blanc to Barbados are many- not least the company’s interior design achievements for some of the most elegant properties on the island. And this autumn Jenny plans to develop these connections even further with the opening of an exciting new showroom on the West Coast. It will showcase Jenny’s desire to offer everyone the chance to create an exceptionally beautiful home in the Caribbean.
Photos provided by Jenny Blanc
Jenny is no stranger to seeing the potential in properties. Her first acclaimed venture was the creation of Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons in Oxfordshire with her then husband Raymond Blanc. With unflinching determination and every attention to detail Jenny and Raymond turned a dilapidated fifteenth century property into one of the finest country house hotels which very quickly gained world recognition. The project managing and selection of everything from the bed linen to the stonework fired Jenny’s lifelong passion for working with interiors. Fifteen years later, and with four international awards to her name, Jenny and her design practice have created a unique International Interior Design Service between London and Barbados. Completed homes are spread around the island from established residences on Polo Ridge, Apes Hill and Royal Westmoreland to expansive new apartments in Port St Charles. Whilst the company has their regional base in Barbados they use this as the operating hub for projects on other Caribbean islands. And back in England the company’s list of completed period property renovations continues to grow.

The Barbados connection began when Jenny joined forces with her design partner Sue Thomas-Richardson. Sue belongs to a much-loved, longstanding family on the island. Having spent the earlier part of her career working for one of the most notable designers on the island, Sue moved to England to gain more experience of working on traditional British properties. Her knowledge of the Caribbean is invaluable to each new residential and corporate project and alongside Jenny’s intuitive design approach, the results are both inspiring and enduring. Understanding life on a tropical island is key to creating an exceptional home in the Caribbean and it is this together with excellent project managing that clients recognise in Jenny Blanc’s unique offering. The company has developed interior design services which consider every detail from start to finish. The design team’s strong links with respected architects and developers specialising in the Caribbean gives them the opportunity to be involved with the construction when required. The interior design part of the service covers the important aspects of space planning and lifestyle considerations alongside Jenny’s own desire to personally

give every client an aspirational home in the sun which is individual, utterly comfortable and truly welcoming. The company oversees every aspect of shipping, importing and installation so that clients don’t have to discover just what it takes to set up a home thousands of miles away. The uniqueness of the company comes from having bases in both London and Barbados from which clients can start the initial process, and from the strong collaborations Jenny and Sue have made with artisans on the island. Using indigenous materials such as coral stone and antique mahogany as the starting point for their ideas, the design team oversees new designs conceived at the main design studio in West London. As the new showroom becomes established, clients will be able to view a constantly changing collection of international furniture and accessories alongside bespoke pieces for those who desire a truly unique piece which, by its very nature, will fit beautifully into new or established properties. The company is proud to encourage increased awareness of the considerable skills on the island and are now looking to export their designs developed in Barbados to other Caribbean islands via the new showroom.

Never one to stand still, Jenny makes regular buying trips to Europe and the States to source an ever-increasing choice of exquisite international ideas for homes in the Tropics, be they classic or contemporary. This has resulted in the company developing new collections, each designed to answer a need for homeowners in the Caribbean. The Outdoor Furniture Collection champions six of the best international brands for verandahs, terraces and poolside while the Island Living Luxuries and Island Living Essentials due to be launched in 2012 will present the ultimate finishing touches. Notes of interest • Jenny Blanc has been awarded one four-star Best Interior Design Caribbean, two five-star Best Interior Design Caribbean and the highly acclaimed World’s Best International Interior Design by the International Property Awards. • Emma Blanc is based at the exciting new lifestyle showroom in Barbados and is available to discuss the company’s interior design services with prospective clients. • Having developed a now well-established base in Barbados, the company continues to create important links with residential clients, realtors and hotel groups across the Caribbean.

North West Vision
One only has to visit Speightstown to be privy to the fact that it possesses a certain charm, with its relaxed atmosphere and historic colourful buildings set against the tranquil and lapping Caribbean Sea. I sat down with Betty Cathrow, Project Manager at the recently completed Saint Peter’s Bay Development to discuss the future of this northern tip of the platinum coast. Saint Peter’s Bay is a luxury development located on the coastline with stunning vistas of the Caribbean Sea. Designed by architect Ian Morrison, each home offers a private feel and breathtaking ocean views. Throw in elegant furnishings and a wonderful use of natural light, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for seaside luxury like no other. Owners here enjoy the on site amenities and the little extras, kayaking at sunrise, turtles nesting on the beach, sunset cocktails, a trip to Speightstown by private water taxi and more. Betty explained that well known businessman and property developer Bjorn Bjerkhamn is the catalyst behind the vision that is Saint Peter’s Bay and that his team is refining a master plan for the north-west coast which will provide a mix of luxury developments and complimentary amenities and services in the area while ensuring that its signature Barbadian charm is retained. They are really excited about what they are doing in the north-west and how the projects and the community will benefit from one another over the next few years. Projects in the works include Palazzate, Port Ferdinand, and the development of properties in Speightstown and there are other projects still being planned. The luxurious Palazzate is located beside Saint Peter’s Bay. Palazzate will redefine ultra luxury real estate on the island offering four spectacular 13,000 square foot residences. This project is well advanced and is due to be completed by mid 2013; Port Ferdinand Marina, a 15 acre exclusive residential private marina community located in Six Men’s Bay, St. Peter will feature two and three bedroom condominiums each complete with its own private berth and spacious dock storage. Phase 1 of this project will be complete next year. The group also owns a few properties in Speightstown and is developing plans for these properties which will further enhance the area by adding additional attractive amenities and services to complement these nearby projects.

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2011 - MARCH 2012
When we think of the North West coast of the island, three words spring to mind: authentic, quaint and picturesque. In this part of the island there is a strong sense of tradition and community spirit. By Nicola Wilson Aerial view of Port St. Charles
Each development will be linked through shared membership of the Port St. Charles Yacht Club, and also in some cases through shared amenities. For example the group will offer a limited number of private berths at Port Ferdinand to Palazzate and Saint Peter’s Bay home owners once the marina is complete. The team believes that an integral part of their success is to work closely with the surrounding communities. They already employ a number of staff from the area and support local development of the youth through the Technology Teacher of the Year Award and the CXC Summer program offered at the nearby Alexandra School. They also sponsor the “Saint Peter’s Bay Road View Rovers”, a local football team which has excelled in the last three years and they work closely with the Turtle Project as the north west beaches are a popular nesting ground. The vision of the developers of Saint Peter’s Bay is to continue to invest in Barbados, especially in the north-west coast of the island, as they believe that it holds a unique charm that appeals to property investors and home owners alike, due to its beauty, lifestyle and strong community spirit. Life is short and what better place to spend time with family and friends than in beautiful Barbados.

How long have you been coming to Barbados? Our first visit was in 1975 for 5 days with a group of travel agents (Julia was one) followed by a day visit on a cruise in about 1989 but then we started regular holiday visits in the late 1990’s. Since 1999 we have been coming at least twice a year. Immigration at the airport often comment: ‘Welcome home’.
How do you plan to use the condo, personal use only, rental income or a mix of both? A mixture and we have been pleasantly surprised at the occupancy rates achieved by Bajan Services/Terra Caribbean in the 18 months to date, especially as we use the apartment ourselves for a month in Late November/ early December and again in late February/early March.
Is this your first property purchase here? Actually no, we have a week’s interval ownership at the Crane, which we purchased 8 years ago.
Do you think the value of the property will appreciate? In the current climate, realistically not in the very short term, but in the medium to longer term we would expect it to, especially with a proven history of good rental occupancy.
What was your criteria? We felt it was time we had a permanent base here and wanted the close ties to the UK, regular air service and stability of Government. Also we always feel’ safe’ here. What attracted you the most to Sapphire Beach? Situated with direct access onto one of the finest beaches of Barbados, the availability of good rental prospects, secure grounds and parking. We are quite active and enjoy being able to walk in the early mornings and evenings, the roads in the area are quiet and the area is flat. Water-sports are available next door and the beach is wide at Dover so there is plenty of space. We could go on… There is nowhere nicer than our own balcony overlooking the sea and turtle watching. We swim in the sea, relax round the pools and in the evenings there are innumerable restaurants and shows available, many within walking distance. We have even walked back from Roots and Rhythms! Is the condo freehold, time-share or other? Freehold.
Do you have any concerns buying property in Barbados? None whatsoever. Describe your experience with Terra Caribbean Seamless. How did you find the experience with the local professional financial and legal services? The process was relatively straightforward, especially considering the development was a ‘new build’ and we were one of the first purchasers. Everyone was extremely helpful. Do you have any advice to share about buying property in Barbados with other buyers? Don’t be afraid to ask around and find professionals recommended by locals. But always remember there may be slightly different procedures/terminology to what you may be used to at home. Get to know the area before you buy – we have several friends who would previously only stay on the west coast but having seen our apartment and stayed, now wish to go back to Sapphire Beach.

DESIGNING A BEDROOM WITH THE DWELLINGS DESIGN STUDIO TEAM Designing a bedroom is all about creating a tranquil and soothing space; the perfect getaway retreat after a long day. Follow these tips from the Dwellings Design Studio team to create your perfect bedroom. First, pick your furniture and plan out your space keeping scale in mind to avoid overpowering the room. In addition to a bed and nightstands, a seating area is ideal for getting ready in the morning, reading or working in the bedroom. When choosing bedding, make sure to pick a mattress and pillows that match your needs and sleep style. Then, create a hotel-worthy bed with plush layers by using decorative lightweight duvets or coverlets over your sheets. Throw cushions in complimentary colors and textures add a finishing touch. A rug under the bed brings the eye down and grounds the space. Also, lighting is key to creating the perfect ambiance. Use lamps with dimmers for the bedside for reading. Table and floor lamps create a softer atmosphere than ceiling fixtures. Add blackout panels to beautiful drapery to dress your windows and keep unwanted sunlight out of your room in the morning. Finally, introduce decorative and colorful elements like throws, botanicals and candles to finish the design and create a luxurious feel. These items along with bedding and pillows can easily be updated to give the space a whole new look on a smaller budget. Want to create your own relaxing space? The Dwellings design team works closely with you with an “any style, any budget philosophy to make your dream space a reality. Visit the Dwellings showroom in store or online at www.dwellingsbarbados.com or contact the design team at design@dwellingsbarbados.com for a free consultation and get started on your project today.

LIVING ROOM DESIGNED BY ARCHER’S HALL When designing for a client who desired a refined and well-tailored feel, the team at Archer’s Hall put together concepts of modern yet timeless interiors. The very unique Royal Westmoreland property commanded a sophisticated and elegant scheme suitable for entertaining, while maintaining an open air West Indian flavor. The design of the living room and terrace were combined to create one large space. Using the classic pairing of Wedgewood blues and crisp linen whites, the pallette was echoed inside and out, using all weather fabrics that are as durable as they are beautiful. Wenge stained wood finishes gave a masculine depth to the space while accents of polished silver highlight details and tabletops. Chinoiserie lamps and tonal paisleys provided a softness to the overall scheme. Terri stated, “We pulled in the striped rug to tie the whole space together, the goal was to make a bold design statement while a giving a nod to all things nautical.” This reference is continued throughout the artwork, where we see sailing images in sepia alongside beautiful shells and corals. Using these stronger images with the more gentle elements within the design really helps to give balance to the finished look. Terri and Monique can be contacted on 422-0400 or by emailing terri@archershall.com or monique@archershall.com

BATHROOM DESIGNED BY JULIANNE GILL FROM STUDIO J I enjoyed working closely with the client on this bathroom renovation at Royal Westmoreland; our goal was to completely transform the dated bathroom to a comfortable space for their son and daughter-in-law to enjoy while on holiday in Barbados. The original bathroom featured double sinks and pickled pine lattice cupboards; we replaced this with one main sink to create more countertop space and additional storage below. The new cupboards have an elegant, timeless look and are designed to let air flow through to the interior; a necessity in the tropical climate. We created a clean, neutral palette with Irox Travertine, tile and marble slab, Kohler fittings in vibrant polished nickel and walnut cabinetry. To complete the transformation, we changed the harsh florescent bulk head lighting to wall lights and overhead down lights, dramatically improving the space to make the bathroom feel larger and more inviting. CIN CIN RESTAURANT DESIGNED BY STEPHANIE BARNES The clients at Cin Cin were willing to take a risk with the look of the restaurant and it was a perfect pairing. The concept was to give something that was light and coastal by day but yet sexy and lounge ready at night. “This look consists of layers”, Stephanie says. Whether it be the custom glass wall infused with precious metals and architectural lighting, the long chic banquette specially designed for the space with textural fabrics, cushions or the light wood legs on a rustic floor treatment, custom stained with the owners keen eye. “The more pattern and texture the more richer this space becomes”, she says. Even the classic dining chair shape was highly thought out. The accent in the room is light gold and muted yellow that brings vibrancy, without being distractingly busy” says Stephanie. Stephanie is creating new and exciting designs in the design industry one project at a time. A British Columbia native with Barbadian heritage, she studied at the well known Art Institute of Vancouver and is a self professed “design junkie”. The studio oversees each project from preliminary design to detailed floor plans to finished spaces. Some of Stephanie’s latest projects include the newly renovated The Mews Restaurant, Sheraton Mall Food Court re-design and renovation, and numerous residential projects ranging from seaside condos to Custom Villas. TOP RENTAL TIPS
Fustic House from US$3,500 per night
• Start looking early - A year in advance isn’t too soon, particularly if you’re interested in peak season rentals over Xmas and New Year. Holiday makers will often book the same house for the following year, so if you have your eye on a particular property, get your pitch in early. • Consider agents versus owners - Going through a reputable agency gives you an assurance of quality that the property has been vetted. Local agencies invariably have “hands on” knowledge of homes on their books, enabling you to compare and contrast a variety of options in one fell swoop. • Check service levels - Rent direct and you run the risk of not having a responsive owner during your stay. If a problem develops, they may be thousands of miles away and not equipped to help. Agents, by contrast, are primed and ready to handle most rental misdemeanours from faulty plumbing to leaky roofs. • Get online – Review rental websites and get a feel for location choices, price points and property styles. The most helpful listings will not only provide ‘in depth’ details of the property, but additional information on the surrounding area, places of interest, recommended restaurants etc. Take time to view interior and exterior shots and scrutinise property descriptions to see what is provided by way of ‘extras’ – satellite TV, Jacuzzi bath, beach/sports equipment. • Choose your location wisely - Consider the full implications of where you plan to stay. Beachfront locations tend to command a higher price and can be considerably hotter peak season than a less expensive hillside retreat with cooling breezes. Draw up a list of what’s important to you and flag up priorities when you talk to the agent or owner. New guest bedroom was once basement space.
Old garage being renovated into a family room which will overlook three lily ponds and a view to the sea.
Renovation queries answered Living Barbados asked well known local architect Michael Carrington some home renovation questions and were lucky enough to get a tour of one of his latest projects. Tell us some of the projects you have designed? Mainly houses for homeowners, from the classical chattel house with all of its intricate wood work to the coral stone houses on the West coast and also some commercial projects. What are the benefits of remodeling? The two main benefits are (a) increase value to the homeowner, (b) better use of an existing space How does the homeowner plan for a remodel? Invariably the homeowner will have a plan of the existing house drawn. They would then sit with their architect to reconfigure the existing spaces and/or additions. Final plans will be submitted to the planning authority if required. The architect will complete all necessary working drawings and a number (minimum of three) of compoLIVING BARBADOS BARBADOS NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2011 2011 -- MARCH MARCH 2012 2012 LIVING

nent contractors will be invited to submit their tender. The tenders are reviewed by the architect and a recommendation is made to the client. Once the construction has started the architect will undertake numerous inspections on site to ensure that the contractor is carrying out the works correctly and to an acceptable standard. The architect at this stage is generally responsible for the certification of funds to the contractor including retention which is generally held for six to twelve months after competition and it is during this time that the contractor will address items due to bad workmanship. After the end of this period the architect will certify that all of the remedial work has been completed and the retention can be released. What are some of the obstacles you may encounter? Remolding carries a series of inherent obstacles. These can and will increase the cost of construction and can range from old lead plumbing, electrical wires buried directly into the walls (i.e. no conduit), incorrect wire sizing, incorrect size of water and waste pipes, no hurricane straps, no damp proof membrane under the floor slab, floor slab without any steel, untreated timber used in roofing structures and the list goes on and on. It never ceases to amaze me what you might find in the next refurbishment, and this is especially true in old houses. Can these be overcome? It would not be a challenge if it could not be overcome, but it usually comes with a price tag attached. Can any building benefit from a remodel or does it suit certain structures (period/style) more than others? Any and all buildings will benefit from a refurbishment and LIVINGBARBADOS BARBADOSNOVEMBER NOVEMBER2011 2011- -MARCH MARCH2012 2012 74 LIVING 74
it matters not the style - the challenge is what makes the difference. The only time when it is not worth the effort is if the structure is unsound. What are the most common changes requested when remodeling? For housing it definitely is bathroom, kitchen, entertainment spaces and entrance façade. What changes can the homeowner make to incorporate a “greener” lifestyle into the house? a. Replace the electrical hot water heater with solar water systems b. Replace the electrical clothes dryer with a propane or natural gas one c. Replace the electric stove with propane or natural gas d. Replace all electrical bulbs with energy efficient bulbs e. Learn to turn off any electrical fixture not required to be energized when leaving a room Give us your top tips when it comes to remodeling a home? a. Choose your architect as he/she will be a great help b. Choose reputable contractors that will give you a good job c. Choose your finance company and read the fine print d. Choose your insurance company as this will probably be your single biggest investment e. Be prepared to spend more than you think. f. Learn to say “no” when you really mean “yes” as item “e” will catch up with you
