Building your dream home For increasing numbers of locals and second homers putting down roots on Barbados, it seems that the quest for individuality is a motivating influence, with many buyers now choosing to side-step turnkey bolthole convention and design their very own dream home from scratch. “Often people think of self-build as a stressful, drawn out process,” says James Burdess of global real estate company Savills which is associated with regional real estate group, Altman Real Estate. “But with the right planning, help and support it can be a hugely rewarding experience. There’s a healthy selection of residential plots for sale on the island, and, you can often find the ideal location with ocean views and rolling countryside to build upon. It’s good news for home builders and for the environment too, because buyers have more architectural input. Add to this the fact that ideal living spaces can be designed without having to ‘make do’ with an existing property and the benefits are soon clear to see.” So what key factors should buyers consider when embarking on their selfbuild journey? Choose Your Location Wisely Buyers can expect to pay on average $25-50 US per square foot, however if you purchase a substantial plot this pro-rata rate can reduce quite dramatically. “Beachfront and sea view plots can run into as much as $200 US per square foot,” confirms Burdess. “So it’s vital to short-list your location ‘must-haves’ against those you might be prepared to negotiate on – such as opting for a plot further back from the beach, yet still within walking distance to the sea.” Always get a second opinion when visiting potential sites. Your agent should be your eyes and ears: ready to offer advice about covenants, drainage, zoning and any surrounding building development. Talk to Your Bank Overseas buyers looking to fund a land purchase will need to register their funds with the Central Bank of Barbados – by doing so, there will be no restriction on repatriation of funds at a future sell-on date. “Those planning to fund their purchase with a mortgage will find a small number of local and international banks that have specific loans in place for land purchases,” explains Miranda John of Savills Private Finance (www.spf.co.uk.) If you’re not a resident or citizen of Barbados, you can apply for a land loan as long as you have a proof of income in your home country and a good credit rating. Bear in mind however, that land loans are usually at a higher rate than a mortgage for an existing home. Who hasn’t thought about building their own house? Four professionals share their vision for homes that could be built on these lovely plots of land currently for sale on the island. Article written by Laura Henderson.

She advises that if you are a vacation or holiday home buyer, you should familiarize yourself with local regulations and requirements that apply to non-residents who want to buy or build abroad. Be Realistic About Budget One of the biggest mistake owners can make, says Peter Sandiford of Habitats Designs (www.habitatsdesigns.com), is buying a plot without considering their overall spend. This includes what it will cost to get the land ready to build (tree clearing, utility connections, and planning permits) on top of build and décor costs. Even if you don’t break ground straight away, it’s important to think about the kind of house you want and price it out with local builders and architects. “Build costs are on average US$250-$350 per square foot,” confirms Burgess, “but preparation costs can be high: from $40,000 to $90,000 US for a typical one-to two-acre lot. Price however, isn’t everything, stresses Sandiford. “I advise sourcing at least three quotes from recommended construction companies before making a final decision. Always go with a firm that you feel comfortable with, one that has a solid track record in the kind of property you are looking to create. A good architect and construction company will work within your budget – even if that means tweaking your dream home aspirations to stay in the black.” Get on Good Terms with the Planners Planning permission can be a lengthy process, with set guidelines as to what is feasible from limitations to the size of property to height restrictions in relation to the zone on which it is being built. “When you’re ready to build you’ll need to get plans drawn up by your architect and submit them for approval by the Town and Country Planning Department,” says Stephen Grant of Worldwide Dream Villas (www. worldwidedreamvillas.com). “So arrange a meeting with the planning officer beforehand. It can go a long way to ensuring that your application meets not only your requirements but also those of the Planning Authorities.”

Consider a Resort Purchase Many buyers choose to ease their workload by buying an approved lot on a resort directly from a developer and having their self-build project managed in-house. You’ll pay more - but there’s less risk that you’ll be stuck with unusable turf. One benchmark example is Apes Hill Resort located in the parish of St James, where ridge lots ranging from 17,270 square feet to 35,600 square feet (with prices from $448,000 US) sport panoramic views of the entire west coast. The resort provides a ‘one-stop’ solution through the process of designing, tendering, constructing and fitting-out Villas. Apes Hills’ dedicated project management team can also help owners in the development of their design brief, as well as monitoring quality, cost and build schedule, and providing a ‘turn-key’ interior fit-out service. A serene and green alternative overlooking the Platinum Coast is celebrated golf resort Royal Westmorland. Their ‘Jasmine Ridge’ land plots ranging from 21,706 to 37,170 square feet are located on one of the highest parts of the estate. Buyers can have a home built by Royal Westmoreland’s team of architects, interior designers and craftsmen. Plot prices start from $1.25m US and go up to $2.2m US. A four-bedroom villa would typically cost around $2.2m US or $2.6m US with a guest cottage. Find Interior Inspiration The interior styling of your home doesn’t have to be a big money production. To get the most out of working with a designer, draw up a draft budget in advance, together with a site plan and a ”look book” of your favourite styles from magazines, so that they have a head start in creating a space specifically for you. “Initial space plan-
ning, selection of paint colours, choosing fabrics and drapery styles are all steps taken with the clients budget in mind and by using the services of an interior designer the client will have a better idea of where and how the money can be best spent to achieve maximum effect” says Lindsey Archer of Coral Island Interiors. A good designer will also be able to guide you on the best way to source items for your new home, however, if you’re planning to bring items in from abroad, be sure to speak to a customs broker to confirm all associated duties and a shipping company to confirm shipping costs. Monitor Progress ‘Out of sight out of mind’ is an easy mind set to fall into when co-ordinating a project from afar, which makes having a project manager to oversee the build process money well spent. That said, advises property consultant Robert Jacobs, the onus is still “entirely on the client” to monitor build, design, and architect schedules: “A home can typically take between 8 to 15 months to complete,” says Jacobs, “but during that time it’s vital to check on progress in person with a few carefully placed site visits. If you do decide to make any changes – make sure they’re done in writing. Bear in mind too, that you’ll need to factor in a contingency fund that covers potential additional changes and associated costs that may occur during the build process.”

Beware of being attracted to colours or decorating styles that may not be practical for your current circumstances. What looks fabulous in some magazines may not work in your own home so try to settle on a style which fits your lifestyle and that can be carried throughout your home. Firstly, ask yourself what it is you truly want out of the space to make it both practical and comfortable. Choose colours and furniture that you truly love, instead of decorating the way you “think” it should be done. Your personality will influence your likes and dislikes – so try to resist the urge to just fill up your space. Take the time to plan your projects and accumulate pieces that you love. In time and if you do your homework, your true unique style will evolve.

As children we all had our cache of dolls, buttons or shiny stones that were all near and dear to our hearts. As we grew older, most of us did not throw them out but rather kept them as an invaluable testament to another time. Whether adding to a cherished menagerie or making a cultural statement, the act of collecting art can be both a fulfilling and a rewarding experience. There are a few basics to consider when collecting art. The first is to know and “cater to” your own taste. Whether it is a Picasso, a Chagall or a Jeff Koon, it should connect with you in a way that will allow your appreciation for the piece to grow. Whether your intention is to become a serious collector or to simply own a few interesting works, it is important to become informed and involved. I suggest that you start following both the trends of the art world and those artists that interest you and educate yourself as much as you can. Art for arts sake is a wonderful thing; however, when collecting, it is important to understand the artist, the origin of each work, the technical aspects of the medium used and the artist’s mission. This will give you a foundation of perspective and technique that will afford insight into a work’s contained meaning, as well as, the evolution of the artist’s focus, skill and trend of result. It will also give you a basis of comparison to see if the work is consistent with what you know about that artist. Seek out expert advice whenever you can, talk to other art collectors and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Another thing to bear in mind is the importance of becoming involved with the art community. Go to vernissages, meet the artists, talk to gallery owners, attend art fairs and visit museums. In short, become an active participant of the art scene. Lastly, budget yourself accordingly; buy pieces that you can afford and that will add value to your collection. Being active within the art scene will give you an understanding of the “buzz” surrounding the “up and coming” artists. Remember all of the great masters were “up and coming” at one time or another. With a good eye and an understanding of art trends you may find that the work you purchased for a pittance a decade ago has blossomed into a veritable treasure both in its appeal and value. Twelve months have passed very quickly for the team at Jenny Blanc. This time last year the doors of the new Jenny Blanc Barbados showroom were being given the final coat of paint in readiness for the pre-Christmas opening in St. James Barbados. The company is no stranger to the island having worked on the interior design of prestigious homes all over Barbados and surrounding islands for over ten years. It was the opening of one of the world’s most noted hotels that first fired her enthusiasm for interiors, so much so that it led to her opening a lifestyle showroom in West London which has become a mecca for homeowners wanting to find an interior designer with the right approach. For Jenny and the design team, creating a home is much more involved than just fabrics and furnishings. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure is the philosophy at Marc Kurtis Interiors, a modest showroom in Lowlands Christ Church, and is an integral part of what makes Curtis Greenidge and Mark Clements’s business so unique. From its inception in December of 2011, Mark and Curtis have been scouting across the island seeking out “forgotten treasures”, both old and new castaway pieces of furniture thought to have little value to some but, once in the capable hands of Curtis and Mark, are transformed into beautiful pieces of art. Curtis, an Interior Designer by profession “always loved the furniture trade”, his father made toys during wartime and had always been a keen collector of antiques. Curtis was interested and exposed to an artistic world of design from an early age. Mark, Welsh by birth, brings his experience of living and working in Europe and is the personality and retail guru of the business and is responsible for running this eclectic and kitsch showroom. From finely restored antiques to glam new curtain tie -backs and unique accessories to original greeting cards, it would be difficult to fall short on creativity with these two exceptionally talented and creative forces at work. In the early days of Marc Kurtis Interiors several pieces of furniture were donated and tastefully transformed, this gave this dynamic duo a chance to express just how innovative and talented they were. Now, a year on they offer a unique service to discerning customers. This approach in taking old or outdated furniture and re-inventing them into something more current and desirable offers an environmentally friendly approach and allows them to ‘give back to the community.’ The partnership has found its strength in Mark and Curtis’s strong beliefs in sourcing available materials and employing the expertise of local artisans. So guys, what are you working on now? We have a fabulous piece currently being restored from the 1920’s called a “Compactom” that is solid Walnut and made at #143 Regent Street, London, UK. It’s a bespoke wardrobe customised for officers of the British Army who were sent to the colonies, like India and Africa, etc. and also for very wealthy gentlemen who would use it to travel on voyages anywhere from 10 -14 days. It has room for Opera hats, socks, trousers, shoes, shirts, collars and cuffs, sports wear, underwear and a compartment for laundry and pyjamas. It has a brass mothball holder to keep out insects and a Travelling Reminder list (see image above). It was also known as Campaign Furniture and today is very sought after as this is a rare piece of historical British furniture.
What would you recommend to care for antiques and furniture in general? We use Bits & Bobs Furniture Oil, made from an old family recipe and have had tremendous success with this when restoring old pieces and also to simply maintain the beauty of the wood.

Insure Savings For Your Home The truth is that insurance is necessary and, when insured values are properly chosen, it benefits not only the individual but also the economy as a whole. Article by Ryan Williams Branch Manager, Business Development
In today’s challenging economic climate with rising prices, increased taxation and declining disposable income, the purchase of insurance at first glance seems to be something that one buys only if there is no choice. “Why spend money on a commodity that you can’t see, touch and more importantly benefit from immediately? And when you do have a claim, you don’t get what you expect!” The truth is that insurance is necessary and, when insured values are properly chosen, insurance is beneficial not only on an individual level but also to the economy as a whole. Individuals who have determined how they wish to insure their property, the value based on this and have suffered through a loss situation can tell you that the claims process is relatively speaking “hassle free”. By spending just a few extra minutes reviewing your property and discussing its attributes with your insurer, you can cut as much as 15-20% off your current insurance premiums. To the layman it would appear to be a simple mathematical equation. Premiums are based on the rate provided by the insurer and the insured value of the property. [Rate x Insured value] = premium cost. Therefore, reduce one of the above factors and you’re “off to the races”. If only things were that simple.

Consider the implications... Reducing the value of your sum insured value could have an adverse effect on any claim settlement ultimately paid. For instance, let’s say the actual value of your property is $500K but you choose to insure for $350K in order to benefit from cost savings. A loss of $100K would result in a claim payment of $70K. [$350,000/$500,000 x $100,000] due to the application of the underinsurance condition. So what if anything can a discerning client do to control the cost of their insurance? The answer: Let the nature of the risk and your personal risk appetite match the policy coverage. Properly done, insurance provides “Peace of Mind”. Many times persons simply don’t take the time to think about the risks that their own property is exposed to. As a result, the large majority of them take out policies that offer generic cover. Consider this; if after reviewing the security of your property and its exposure to the various perils you feel that the only real exposure is to Fire. You may determine that any other loss would be financially manageable and as such elect to take the most basic coverage which is fire only. A decision to do so could result in as much as a 50% reduction in cost. Similarly, you may determine that your home is built like a fortress, is on high ground and well protected against major catastrophes (i.e. hurricanes and earthquake, with hurricanes being the most common exposure in the Caribbean). A move to exclude this cover from your policy, though not advisable in the current climate, could result in as much as a 40% reduction in premium. For the calculated risk taker, the option of increasing your Catastrophe deductible remains. Standard market Catastrophe deductibles in the Caribbean are set at 2% of the Sum Insured value. That is to say, should your property suffer from perils such as Earthquake, Volcanic Eruption, Hurricane or Storm, you will be asked to bear an amount equivalent to 2% of your sum insured value.

You may, however, elect to take a higher deductible (5% or 10%), which could see a reduction of as much as 10%. Of course this move would result in a higher portion of any loss being shouldered by you in the event of loss or damage by a catastrophe peril. Most insurers offer concessions if the property at risk has been constructed or altered in such a way as to mitigate or reduce the likelihood of losses occurring. The presence of hurricane straps, hurricane shutters, impact glass, burglar bars and fire/burglar alarms, elevation of the property 6’ to 8’ above the surrounding ground level, just to name a few, could afford prospective clients as much as 10% to 15% off insurance cost. It is imperative that this information be shared with your insurers. Without it, standard rates are generally applied. External walls, driveways, pools, gates and fences are automatically considered as part of your Building’s sum insured value. These may not be considered to be critical elements necessary for occupancy of the property or “big ticket” items. Excluding these from your sum insured value could serve to reduce the ultimate premium charged. It is imperative to mention that reduction in insurance cover should not be approached haphazardly. Thought should go into assessing the nature and exposure of the risk being undertaken. Discussion with an insurance executive to determine the true ramifications of any changes should be had so that informed decisions can be made.

You may opine that we have only covered half the equation. What about the rate? How about locating a low cost insurer with a significantly slashed rate? Wouldn’t that also reduce cost? Though insurance companies in general offer a homogeneous product, the claim of similarity across the board could not be further from the truth. Insurance companies share very different underwriting and claims ethos. These have a far reaching impact on their ability to serve. The ability to stay afloat in a catastrophe situation is yet another characteristic not shared by all insurers. Clients deserve prompt and personalized service regardless of the severity of the situation. Rated companies like Island Heritage can provide clients with financial peace of mind, which in these trying times is something of significant value. When making the decision of which insurer to choose, consider the purpose of having the policy in the first place. Choose an insurer with a proven track record and the financial stability to pay your claims. In the face of the misery caused by a loss situation, your primary goal will be to complete the process with the minimum level of stress and resistance. To do so, it’s imperative to know your entitlements ahead of time and engage an insurer both willing and capable of meeting them. Strength Delivers!

PLANTS RECOMMENDED FOR BARBADIAN GARDENS PLANTS FOR POTS: • Zamia furfuracea: Sometimes called Cardboard Palm. They have beautiful architectural habit but are tough as nails. • Macrozamia species: Great architecture with feather like foliage, will take dappled shade. See image on right. • Heliconia’s: Variegated Ginger, Strelitzia juncea or Narrow-leaved Bird of Paradise and Plumeria obtusa – these are all gorgeous plants with great habit that work in a potted environment. • Maori Chief (Phormium ‘Maori Chief’): A colourful, medium sized strappy-leafed flax. Needs plenty of sun. CLIMBING PLANTS: • Hoya, Wax Flower (Hoya carnosa): A light, tropical-looking climber with waxy leaves and flowers. Ideal for a smaller space and will easily wrap itself round a pole. Likes cooler climates and constant moist soil. • Stephanotis floribunda, sometimes called Madagascar jasmine: A beautiful white flower with a large leathery green leaf. See image. • Flaming Glorybower (Clerodendrum splendens): A great climber to add a burst of colour to a small, warm space. The flowers are great for attracting butterflies. FRAGRANT OR INSECT REPELLENT PLANTS: • Michelia champaca: (Joy Perfume Tree). The Balinese prayer flower used in the famous Joy perfume and some have even said Chanel no. 5. It is my favorite scent in the garden and perfect for Barbados. See image below. • Lemon Scented Tea Tree (Leptospermum petersonii): An excellent mosquito repellent that can be grown as a small tree or trained as a hedge. Clipping the leaves will release the lemon scent. • Gardenia (Gardenia augusta): Fragrant flowers but thirsty plant and requires good, fertile soil conditions. • Frangipani Tree (Plumeria rubra): Fragrant flowers available in red, pink and white varieties. Works best in warmer climates in areas that get plenty of sun.

THE FOCAL POINT Create an accent point in your garden. The best location for this is the strongest view line in the garden. Often this is the spot you look at as you enter the space from your house. Make sure whatever is in that location looks amazing, as you will be looking at it a lot! Focal point ideas include a sculpture, an interesting plant in a pot, or a lovely tree. The plant you choose to be the focal point has to be so interesting that just one will attract attention. They might have unusual or striking, year-round architectural structure and colour like Cordyline fruticosa and Bismarckia nobilis or a habit that acts like an exclamation mark in the landscape like a bird’s nest fern or a Blue Cycad called a Dioon. Remember the key here is to use the plant as a magnet but don’t give it all away at first glance. Allow people to discover it and use it to draw people into the landscape. PAVERS Pavers are far and away the most popular option when it comes to outdoor floors, and why not? They come in a huge range of shapes and sizes and are made of anything from clay to concrete to reconstituted stone. Different elements can be added to the mixture for colour and texture and the surface treated to produce great finishes like sawn, polished, flamed, honed, split faced, bush hammered and picked. Keep in mind a space looks bigger with a larger format paver and consider the spaces between the pavers; from none at all with butt-jointing, to a joint large enough to allow herbs or scented ‘floor’ plants to poke through. Pavers can also be laid in patterns or with inlays of other materials, tying in the floor covering with other materials used in the garden or even the house. FURNITURE Just as furniture is a crucial part of interior design it is also essential to outdoor decorating. The technology used to create outdoor fabrics and furnishings has advanced immensely in a short period of time. These days, there is very little inside that can’t be converted for outdoor use. It pays to invest in good quality furniture with coatings and finishes that can withstand all weathers. When shopping for outdoor furniture look for strength, durability and style. Furniture that can be customized by colour or cushions is a great way to inject some of your own personality into the piece. Don’t rule out making your own from recycled material or restoring a second-hand piece. There are no rules when it comes to furnishing outdoors, in fact, rugs, chandeliers, coffee tables and even lamps can look fabulous in a private garden. Just be sure the material can withstand the elements and that they are a reflection of your taste and personality. Start by photographing everything in your house: paint, fabric, carpet, art, even your wardrobe. Your secrets will be revealed! PLANTING DESIGN • Choose local plants and water-wise plants where possible. • Use efficient drip irrigation systems with a simple weather track system that doesn’t irrigate when it rains and soil moisture sensors that only water when required. • Give plants only as much water as they need by grouping those with similar requirements together.

COLOR Adding a splash of color is a great way to make a garden space feel new and exciting! Choose colors already used within your home and draw them out into your garden through accessories such as pots, cushions, lanterns, sculpture or even plant colors. PRIVATISE No matter how great your garden looks, if it doesn’t feel private you will not want to spend time in it. Assess the privacy issues and determine the best way to tackle them. Sometimes it may be as simple as planting a hedge along a boundary or a trellis with a climber growing up it, other times it may be the creation of a roofed pergola. Either way, ensure you discuss with your neighbours before launching into any project affecting boundaries and views. SOIL • Improve moisture and nutrient retention in new garden beds by adding organic matter to the top 30cm of soil. • Make your own compost from kitchen scraps, lawn clippings and other garden waste. 62

Lighting Without some form of lighting you cannot enjoy the pleasure of your garden at night. Lighting is such a versatile medium and can easily transform a space. It can be functional and atmospheric. Use it to mark boundaries, pathways, entrances and steps and to illuminate points of interest such as sculptures, trees, walls, water features and hedges. Lighting gives you an endless palette of different colours, shapes and textures to use.You can transform your garden with the flick of a switch. The first thing to think about when it comes to lighting is how much lighting does your garden need and what is the most efficient way to make this happen.Think about the strength and direction of the light. Do you want a soft glow? Or a strong beam of light? You can also keep things simple with twinkling lanterns, solar lights or even candles. Use stencils to create interesting patterns or rotating colour wheels to add some drama. The possibilities are endless. Of course, before anything else, the most important thing to remember when doing anything related to lighting is safety and of course responsible energy use. Look into LED lighting, fiber optic lighting and then halogen. These are all energy efficient and highly sophisticated.

• Create a worm garden. Worms exude vermicast which is a powerful and free organic fertilizer. • Use water saving crystals or even products like Hydro stretch that maximize the precious water that goes into the landscape. LAWN • Trade-in unnecessary areas of turf for water-efficient garden beds. • Choose slower-growing, less thirsty turf varieties (Palmetto & Sir Walter are good examples). • Do not over fertilize. People who over fertilize in coastal areas are causing damage to the coral. Nitrogen run off is extremely dangerous to the environment. Choose low nitrogen fertilizers and use sparingly. WATER SOURCES • Install a rainwater tank for all your garden needs. • Greywater is green. Use your water more than once. Your sink water, bath water, and even clothes washing water can all be reused in the garden provided you use biodegradable detergents. This is an intelligent form of water conservation. POTS • Plant into the ground rather than in pots. Pots limit a plant’s drinking and nutrient zone and choose pots made from less porous materials so that water and nutrients are maintained within the soil mix. • Repot every 2 years to avoid plants being root bound. • Rotate all potted plants 180 degrees every two weeks to event the natural light distribution. POOLS • Use a pool cover as often as possible. Without a cover more than half the water in your pool can evaporate over a year. • Check for leaks often and make repairs or replacements. • Use a Spectralight UV filtration system so you minimize chemical use. The Lady and Her Stories Barbadian author Roberta “Nana” Simpson firmly believes in the power of words to convey positive and encouraging messages that empower children to find their values and to understand how their actions can impact the lives of others in a beneficial way.
Truly passionate about storytelling and the benefits for both children and parents, Barbadian Author Roberta “Nana” Simpson has found her niche in writing books for children using stories from the Bible as inspiration for teaching important lessons in life. Roberta explains “I have always wanted to help children to apply virtues to their lives, to help them find a meaning to their questions and to guide them; children need to connect to their feelings, to understand what they are experiencing. The message of the books is about hope. Not only for the children, but also for their families. A book is an opportunity to read a story and connect with children and make a difference in their lives.” Growing up in London during the Blitz of WWII, Roberta’s creativity was clearly in her DNA. Her father was a big band leader, her mother an actress; her grandparents were the last Raj and Ranee of Sarawak (now Borneo) and her grandmother was the inspiration for the character of Wendy in J M Barrie’s Peter Pan. As a mother and later a grandmother, she captured the imagination of her own children and grandchildren as well as their friends and anyone else that might be listening with her “crazy stories”. Who would have known that later in life she would be guided to taking this innate talent and publishing her stories for the rest of the world to enjoy?
Her first book, Nana’s Bible Stories, included an audio CD narrated by well-known inspirational speaker Sheila Walsh and received many accolades including a Mom’s Choice Award for Excellence, firmly establishing Roberta as a successful children’s author. Her next venture, Once Upon A Christmas, tells the ageold story of the birth of Jesus in Roberta’s own special way. Her most recent book, Tails from the Ark, is beautifully illustrated to creatively tell the story of the biblical flood and what life might have been like on Noah’s Ark... from the perspective of the animals! Where Angels Tread
In 1987 founders Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray brought together their wealth of experience in the world of wine with the dream of producing premium Chilean wine. Joined by Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988 these four visionaries have taken Montes from Chile to over By Rachel Ramphal one hundred countries worldwide. Focusing on international market standards reaped early rewards with the release of their highly acclaimed Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Alphas Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. The Montes Alpha brand became instantly synonymous with premium quality. These were followed by the first Chilean “Ultra Premium” wine; Montes Alpha ‘M’ (A classic Bordeaux Blend), followed by another luxury wine, Montes Folly, 100% pure Syrah wine in very limited production, and lastly by Purple Angel, a ninety- two percent Carmenere launched in 2005. They all became instant successes! When Aurelio Montes first visited a remote part of Chile’s Colchagua Valley called Apalta he was struck by the beauty of the place. “We felt there was music in the air” Aurelio says of Apalta, “but no one else was hearing the music from the market.”This is where their first Apalta Cabernet was made from one hundred year old vines. This is where he planted his Syrah on the granitic upper slopes of hills where, as he called them,”acrobats”were needed to pick the grapes at harvest. A spot very similar to Hermitage in the Rhone Valley of France, this is where they finally built their “state of the art” winery and cellar using principles of Feng Shui design and holding 2,300,000 litres of wine. Montes wines has had a presence in Barbados for over a decade and, restaurants around the island have been proud supporters of these angelic wines for their excellent presentation, taste, value for money and overall appeal. Bacchus may be the god of wine but the Alpha angels have descended from the mountainside of Chile and wine connoisseurs around the world are singing their praises!
Known as the ‘Guardian Angel’, the late Douglas Murray was a founding father of Montes and a respected legend in the wine trade worldwide. He was a staunch believer in family, friends and Montes wines. A charismatic, beloved man who conquered not only many markets of the world, but also the most doubting hearts of those who once did not believe in Chilean wines. This is a man who would get up from a dinner table to thank other tables around the restaurant for choosing Montes wines. Why Barbados? We love the climate and relaxed nature of the island. The fact that there is no language barrier and the whole country has a closely related feel to England makes everyday living easy to manage. Appeal of property? We viewed many properties and we liked the feeling of the house and we could see its potential - albeit the renovations have been extremely hard work and are ongoing! Why the South Coast? Our preference is the South coast as we love being close to the Gap with its bars and restaurants, the beaches are great, its near to Bridgetown and a short distance from the airport. It truly is the perfect location for us. Is this your first property in Barbados? It is our second home, we started off with a condo but realised we wanted to spend a lot more time on the island so felt it would be great to have a home with more space and a lovely garden. How long have you been coming to Barbados? We honeymooned here in 1985 and returned many times, hence we felt we should have a second home here and now hopefully it will become our main home.

With regard to completing the renovations we still have to finish the deck, all external work needs undertaking - ie - we will probably trowel plastic the exterior walls, we need to do the back patio and front drive, new gates and fencing and lots of smaller jobs internally need finishing off as does the work in the adjoining apartment. Funds permitting we would like to install a small swimming pool too!
