Historic & Magical Mangrove Plantation Lovingly restored and updated Mangrove Plantation is currently on the market By Rachel Ramphal Photography by Jake Thomas and Dan Christaldi

B

arbados is celebrated for its rich history and as a popular heritage destination. While some historic homes have fallen into ruin or disrepair many more have been lovingly restored, offering a unique home experience. Many of these plantation houses were built on sugar estates in the sixteen and seventeen hundreds. Mangrove Plantation is one of these wonderfully restored 18th century homes. A home of prominent historical heritage, the name “Mangrove also bears a botanical significance to the white mangrove trees which no doubt grew by the large pond that was present when the early settlers arrived on the island. The Skeetes, one of the island’s most prominent families, played an important role over time on the island. They were part of the traditional elite from the time of colonisation in 1628. Mr. John Brathwaite Skeete held the highest position on the island at the time of President Of The Council - from 21st June 1827 to 6th February 1829, when Governor Ward returned to England to retire. The Skeete family pur-

chased Mangrove in the early 18th century and expanded it by purchasing parcels of surrounding lands. While the main house today has been totally modernized, it retains the same footprint of the original house. There is even a tomb on site where many of the family members were interred. The current owners took over the property in 2000 and have since fully restored it together with the beautifully landscaped grounds - adding a pool and Jacuzzi. The buildings were made from coral stone excavated from the on-site quarry, now a lush private garden. Some of the desirable features of this home are the wide, wrap-around terrace downstairs, patio space off the bedrooms, hardwood floors and special architectural details like a fully restored mill wall as well as large windows and doors, allowing light and the trade winds. The estate, at just under thirty acres, is ideally located on a hillside ten minutes inland from the West Coast of the island. Breezy and private, its elevation affords views out to the brilliant blue Master bedroom with view to the gardens

Caribbean Sea, which can be enjoyed from many vantage points on the property. The stately main house can accommodate eight in four bedrooms while a two-bedroom cottage, the former Carriage House, conveniently houses another two bedrooms. The house has been updated to a very high standard with furnishings and fittings purchased and collected from across Europe, America and the West Indies. The furniture strikes a collected and cohesive harmony; a mix of antiques and classics with select Asian pieces. A grand mahogany staircase leads up to the bedrooms on

the top floor. Here, the master bedroom has a private terrace and full-length windows. A sumptuous en suite bathroom features fine fittings with a giant sunken bath as the ultimate indulgence. Three additional bedrooms, one of them en suite, open onto a shared terrace overlooking the gardens and restored mill wall. The fully converted mill now houses a charming downstairs bar while a gallery at the top, accessed via spiraling mahogany steps, offers outstanding, panoramic views. Downstairs the dining and sitting rooms have exposed wooden

beams. Doors open from these rooms onto the verandah allowing for beautiful vistas of the gardens. Exquisite bespoke Persian rugs and wonderful artwork add warmth and sophistication. In the dining room a wet bar and wine cooler make entertaining a breeze, with a fully serviceable Butler’s Pantry, steps away from this room. The kitchen’s commercial grade, stainless appliances have modern appeal yet, it remains cozy and faithful to the era of the house - with a farmhouse sink, an oven surround in tiles of soft blue and a butcher block island. Just off the kitchen is a light and airy breakfast room, offering a relaxed alcove for dining. This informality continues in the TV room, where a wall mural of playful green monkeys frolicking in trees mirrors their exact behavior outdoors - a nod to the motif so popular to the island. The Carriage House Cottage is a perfect symmetry of modern and colonial features, with exposed coral stone walls, while clerestory windows and indoor gardens maximize the light coming into the building. The open-plan kitchen and dining area open directly onto a spacious pool deck - where tables and chairs are ideal for al fresco dining and loungers for the perfect perch to relax in the sun or shade. Steps from the house and under the shade of a majestic Bearded Fig tree the owners have built an expansive wooden deck with built-in seating. Here, a long, tiled island complete with a sink and large grill is the perfect spot for cocktail parties at sunset or terrific outdoor barbeques. This house is an idyllic retreat to raise a family and a most enchanting place to host guests. From past to present, Mangrove continues to weave her magic. Circuit racing in the Caribbean began in 1956 on a disused USAF base at Atkinson Field (aka South Dakota) in the former British Guiana, now Guyana. While it took Barbados more than 15 years to catch up back in the day - Bushy Park did not open until Independence Day 1971 – the island is set to lead its regional neighbours into a new era when the redeveloped facility is launched at Top Gear Festival Barbados. The first circuit was a dirt track carved out by Ralph ‘Bizzy’ Williams in a former onion field next to his home in the island’s south-eastern parish of St Philip, with fellow motor sport enthusiasts Heinz Meyer and Pat Gonsalves riding shotgun on his Volkswagen-based racing special called ‘Foolishness’. Despite seeming a haphazard way to ‘design’ a racetrack, it remained unchanged for 40-plus years, and now lives on in the new layout. Bushy Park’s journey from dirt track to world-class facility has been a chequered one, forced into closure twice by worldwide economic downturns. It is testament to the determination and vision of those involved that this new chapter is being written in equally difficult times, with the two-fold aim of finally building a

permament home for island motor sport and providing a massive boost for sports-tourism. After the runaway success of its opening fixture, the track was given the full Barber-Green asphalt treatment in time for the Action ’72 Easter Motor Race Meeting. The crowd was huge – period estimates suggest 20,000 – and Prime Minister Errol Barrow arrived by helicopter, not so much a publicity stunt, more a necessity, such was the weight of traffic. Over the next three seasons, Bushy Park was a pioneer in sports-tourism, as racers from Europe and North America flew in once or twice a year to take on the cream of the Caribbean, Barbados joined by Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and other territories; drivers such as Gabriel Konig and Gordon Spice from the UK developed life-time friendships, while visiting race cars often failed to make the boat home, as locals snapped them up to supplement the regional inventory. With events for karts, circuit and dirt track motorcycles as well as cars, each of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) four race meets a year attracted 70 or so entries. Race-winners included Williams and team-mate Mike Atwell (twice the Formula Caribbean Champion), Michael Gill, Doug Maloney, Andrew Phillips, Peter Ullyett and Harry Watkins – most of those surnames are heard in island motor sport circles to this day. Just as the sport was really taking off came the first blip in Bushy Park’s history - a casualty of the global oil crisis, it did not reopen in 1976 and fell into disrepair. A decade later, plans were drawn up for the redevelopment of the site as a combined facility

for two types of horsepower a 2.8-mile Grand Prix circuit enclosed within a horse racing track up to 1.5 miles long, taking in a large tract of land to the south. Despite guarded commitment from Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and the enthusiasm of legendary racehorse trainer Bill Marshall, however, the plan was abandoned, although the circuit continued to be used for occasional speed events. Under new management, but with the BRC still the organiser, the track reopened on United Nations Day 1992. Minister of Sport Hon Wes Hall arrived by helicopter, as Prime Minister Barrow had 20 years earlier, while St Philip North MP, Hon Warwick Franklyn, described the re-opening as “a further expression of the sports-tourism fusion”... a phrase we hear often, two decades later! With no more single-seater racing cars, local rally drivers like Raymond and Sean Gill, Richard Roett and Roger Skeete came to the fore in the saloon car classes, while familiar names from the ‘70s returned, including Michael Gill and Doug Maloney. Another global recession was looming and there were few long-haul visitors; there was significant regional interest, however, Guyanese brothers Jad and Ray Rahaman, in particular, earning an enthusiastic local following. Above, from left: Mark Maloney, Bizzy Williams, FIA President Jean Todt, St Philip North MP, Hon Michael Lashley, BMF President Andrew Mallalieu at the ground breaking ceremony of Bushy Park Circuit, August 2012.

Doug Maloney, seen in his current Audi A4 quattro, is unique in having raced over five decades

But it was not to last. After just 2 years, the Pirelli International of October 1994 was described as “the grand farewell”, with Prime Minister Owen Arthur promising his Government would assist in keeping the sport alive in Barbados. As the circuit closed for a second time, Bizzy Williams, who raced a saloon car that day, was still the outright lap record-holder: while his time of 42.6s, set in a Brabham BT28 single-seater in 1975, had not been beaten this time round, the saloons of the modern era were not far off – Sean Gill’s Toyota Starlet was the fastest, at 43.98s. Island fans were not starved of circuit racing for as long during Bushy Park’s second hiatus, as the newly-formed Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL) ran its first full season in 1997, building on unofficial gatherings of competitors in the intervening couple of years. From small beginnings, BARL grew steadily in membership and secured increased sponsorship, while Bushy Park benefitted from a swathe of improvements - electronic timing was introduced, followed by new start lights, roofing of the pits and newly-painted grid markings, while diligent work by Wendy Williams and her crew brought the grounds back to their former glory. BARL’s first International Race Meet in 2003 was sponsored by Williams Industries, as the venue attracted revived interest from the region, Barbados becoming one of the host countries of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship in 2008. In recent seasons, around 100 local drivers have raced at Bushy Park each year ... and Doug Maloney is still one of them. The region’s only driver to have competed across five decades - when Bushy Park was closed, he ‘filled in’ with rallying and speed events – he is now the proud grandfather of third-generation Maloney racers, while son Mark is the lead investor in the re-development of Bushy Park. Other current track stars have past connections, too, not least Stuart Williams, who has followed father Bizzy as outright lap record holder; his time of 40.866s (2012, Lotus Elise) will stand

28

Nearly all of the original 1.3-kilometre layout remains although it has been excavated and re-laid to blend in with the new southern loop bringing the total length to 2.2kms, with a constant width of 12 metres, developed to achieve FIA Grade 3 approval. Internal link roads create a kart circuit of 1.2kms, which will meet Grade A venue requirements for CIK-FIA events. Once licensed, Bushy Park will be able to host International circuit-racing categories such as Formula 3 and Touring Cars, and karting events up to World Championship level. In addition to circuit racing, there is a drag strip, while other disciplines, such as autocross, dexterity, drifting and rallycross will be catered for, along with industry and road safety driver training programmes.

forever as the old circuit record, while Roger Mayers and his Ford Focus will stand as fastest four-wheel-drive, his time of 40.996s clocked in March 2007 finally dislodging Bizzy, almost 38 years on. The last line of chapter three was written in June 2013, when BARL brought the curtain down on its 17-year tenure, Bushy Park’s longest period of continuous use... over 42 years, each of the island’s motor sport clubs have organised events there and all of them eagerly wait to see what the new multi-purpose facility has to offer. Following three years of planning and consultations, supported by motor sport’s world governing body, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Government of Barbados and the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF), work started last August and was progressing well at press time towards completion in late March. Funded by a group of local investors, the developer and operator, Bushy Park Circuit Inc (BPCi), is turning the dreams of island motor sport fans into reality. A major coup for the circuit, for Barbados and for the wider Caribbean is the arrival of Top Gear Festival Barbados, along with the opening round of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship; this has been long in the planning, with the BMF and BPCi working alongside the Barbados Tourism Authority to bring it to fruition. The spectacular programme of activities will not only provide the island’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans with a weekend to remember, but also launch Bushy Park Circuit to a worldwide audience in print, broadcast and social media.

Stephanie Barnes Interior Design Studio was born after she met her husband on one of her “Bajan vacations”, married and settled on the Island eventually. The studio is a full service interior design firm specializing in private residences, commercial projects and hospitality projects, both in Barbados and Canada. Her designs and ideas have received both local and International recognition and her design studio was awarded the prestigious International Virgin Atlantic Caribbean Property Award at five star status, the highest level achievable. As Principal of the design firm, Stephanie’s at-

tention to detail is apparent in all of her jobs. She seamlessly blends the client’s personal style with her distinct design vision resulting in spaces that are chic, classic and unique. A successful soccer player for British Columbia who earned an athletic scholarship to the USA, Stephanie spent almost 20 years following her athletic passions. After concluding her sports career she focused her discipline, drive and talent on her dream of becoming an Interior Designer. Graduating uppermost in her class, with an Associates Interior Design Degree from the Art Institute of Vancouver, was just the beginning of a life-long passion and appreciation for design, architectural preservation and the environment.

This 1700’s plantation house formally a library, was turned into a beautiful kitchen complete with custom cabinetry, glass-door pantry, a beautiful pair of chandeliers and stunning hand selected marble backsplash.

Her love for design, though focused most of the time on her work, encompasses an array of other interests, some less apparent than others. Her interest in fashion came as little surprise as evidenced by her trendy but classic style, quite similar to her interiors. Stephanie is not only a lover of fashion but an avid sports fan and, naturally as a Canadian, a hockey lover! Perhaps less obvious, but equally relevant, are some of her other interests. She works in Barbados to help the Animal Welfare Society, and along with her husband, rescues mistreated dogs and strays nurturing them until they are healthy and then finding them homes. From an early age volunteer work has always been important to Stephanie and still is. At the age of twenty she coached a Men’s Special Olympic team in British Columbia; in Nashville she worked with the Drug and Homeless Society and throughout her years in the US, she was a part of women’s homeless abuse programs. Q. Who are some of your design influences? A. Some of my design influences are architects and designers who are strongly influenced by nature and incorporate the inside with the outside elements such as Frank Lloyd Wright. Also Iris Apfel a famous fashion icon and interior designer born in the 20’s whose work is still current to this day. Great design is always timeless. Q. You seamlessly blend contemporary and traditional pieces with ease, which can often be quite difficult to do successfully. Are there any rules to follow when doing this? A. You need to find the right balance. A mid century item mixed with a modern piece may work nicely but certain eras do not always harmonize as well. Keep in mind the era of the piece, the lines, the purpose and where it is to be used as that plays a large factor. Combining materials from traditional and contemporary sources can create interesting spaces but attention should be paid to ensure they scale out appropriately. Q. When not working what are some of your interests? A. That does not happen very often :) but, spending time with family, friends and my husband are on the top of my list. I love fashion so I check out the latest styles and as a former athlete I try to stay connected to the sports world. Traveling is also very important to me, and definitely my dogs, which are my children.

the renovation of Pisces restaurant in St. Lawrence Gap which will be completed this year. Stephanie’s residential projects are equally impressive with a portfolio that boasts quality projects with variations in size, budget and style. Some of these include a luxurious villa in Sandy Lane which the Stephanie Barnes Interior Design Studio custom designed everything from bespoke iron – work doors and staircase to bathrooms and exterior design. A Cape Cod inspired home in British Columbia, completed with a conscious budget proving that high style can be both stylish and affordable. Then a historic Barbadian plantation home she masterfully restored, bringing fresh life to original rooms and enhancing what was already a architecturally relevant home. A contemporary residence at Apes Hill Club showcased high-end finishes and custom designed fixtures not to mention a museum worthy collection of contemporary furnishings and artwork juxtaposed with thoughtful accents. In addition to designing commercial and residential spaces, the Studio has also been responsible for some of the most alluring cocktail parties and charity events on the island, including the highly successful Charity Chicks ‘Tickled Pink’ parties in 2010 and 2012 on the roof top at Limegrove Lifestyle Centre. I already have a mortgage with another bank but I’m thinking of switching. What does Scotiabank have to offer? As part of our switch mortgage program, we help to pay a portion of your legal fees. We’ve found that for many people, the thought of having to pay the legal fees associated with switching their mortgage has been prohibitive, so we ease this burden quite significantly. If you switch your mortgage to Scotiabank, you can also bundle in additional funds which you can use for any purpose such as home renovation, education, medical costs or debt consolidation. We’ve found this is also a big reason why people switch as they can consolidate all of their debt which usually results in improved cash flow and hence, savings. Depending on the customer’s needs, we also identify what other possible banking solutions we can offer to make your life easier, such as a credit card or small business banking services.

Q

Q

I have recently married and my wife and I are considering buying land and building a home on it. Once we have found a spot that we like, what are the first things we should do?

I am interested in switching to a 30 year amortization but I’m 40 years old. Would I be too old to qualify?

A

We don’t actually have an age limit on when you can qualify for a 30 year amortization. However, we would still take your age into consideration and help you to plan around that age scenario in the way that’s best for you. So for example if you are 40, and have a certain level of financial commitments, we can give you the 30 year amortization to help you with your current cash flow situation. We can then revisit that at each renewal process. You can still qualify for a 30 year amortization but if you know that you want to finish paying off the mortgage say, in 20 years, we can help you work out how to get that done.

Before you even get to that point, ideally you should first come to the bank as a couple to have a conversation about what you can qualify for so that you can approach the land hunt from a more informed viewpoint. When you come in, you should bring your most recent payslips, proof of outstanding debts and proof of savings. We would look at your budget and income and see how much you can use towards your down payment and what you can qualify for.

B

uilt on the site of a 1940’s petrol station and bus garage, this Boutique Hotel sits on one of the most beautiful beaches on the Platinum coast of Barbados. Proclaimed ‘The Ivy of the Caribbean’ by Michael Winner, the attached Restaurant sits aloft a luxurious deck inches above the sugar crystal sand with the turquoise sea mere footprints away. Under new management and, with a recent renovation by stellar designers Lynne Pemberton and Jayne Best, the updated look of both the fine dining restaurant and the boutique hotel suites have received rave revues. The recent addition of The Lone Star Beach House next door, offers the discerning luxury traveler privacy in a select choice of sophisticated accommodations. One Penthouse and two additional suites, bearing the names of legendary classic cars, are spacious and the décor is simple understated luxury. Each suite has their own beach access and private terraces look through shady palm trees to the calm and breathtaking turquoise waters of the hypnotic Caribbean Sea. The designers achieved the desired quintessential Barbadian aesthetic throughout the suites and restaurant through the use of hardwood floors, white boarding and louvered shutters. In the ‘Cadillac’ penthouse a King size Four-poster bed, separate sitting room and luxurious bathrooms add the ‘wow’ factor while service is key and ‘whatever the guests request is their pleasure.’ The Lone Star likes to refer to the suites as ‘less of a hotel and more like your very own Caribbean respite.’

The Lone Star welcome is as legendary as its service and you would be forgiven for believing that you were their only customer. The Lone Star Beach House next door, previously a private villa on the beach, was purchased by Lone Star owner Mr. Whelan and his daughter Jayne and transformed into another boutique hotel offering additional accommodation with the same luxe interiors and service. A private Chef can be provided for guests in six en-suite bedrooms over three levels where again, they receive the same personal service so synonymous with the Lone Star name. The International A-list clientele who frequent the restaurant consists of well-heeled travelers, who appreciate fine dining in a superb setting. A smart palette of crisp whites and shades of blue set against dark wood floors are accented with vintage lighting and mirrors but by far the most amazing accessory is the location. The view from day to night is a never-ending canvas of water stretching to the horizon in a masterpiece of the sea and sky. Yachts sail by in the day and at night the Moon shines her glittering path across the inky ocean all set to the ambient soundtrack of gently lapping waves. At the bar a lounge offers comfortable seating where you can chat with friends while enjoying cocktails, wines and champagnes. Here framed pop art pieces add a splash of colour and a playful sign proclaiming ‘Private Property, Nudists Beach’ strikes just the right tongue-in-cheek humour. The Lone Star welcome is as legendary as its service and you would be forgiven for believing that you were their only customer. Wait staff in their mechanic’s uniforms make for an entertaining backdrop as they whisk effortlessly up and downstairs from the kitchen bearing gastronomic delights.

The recently renovated Lone Star Beach House is now available for short term rent. This beautiful house enjoys a prime beach location next to the Lone Star Restaurant

The daytime atmosphere in the restaurant is laid back and beach friendly, in the evening, smart casual and always hip and trendy. Discerning clientele enjoy an International menu which also features some Italian, as well as local specialties. Ocean breezes circulate throughout the open space and a new outer boardwalk has been added to accommodate casual beachside lunches or evening cocktails. Enjoy the ‘Lone Star Sunset’ here… in the sky and ‘on the rocks’, a sexy blend of Southern Comfort, Kola Tonic, Cherry Brandy, Orange Juice and Angostura Bitters. Manager Giorgio Benedetto is keen to emphasise the winning ingredients of the restaurant; the very best vegetable produce is flown into the island from Europe twice weekly. Fresh fish, salmon, oysters, and Loch Fyne mussels from Scotland and American grass fed beef star alongside locally procured items such as mango, banana, local fish and fresh herbs. All food is vacuum-sealed and dated on arrival stunning sunset thus ensuring it retains its superior quality and the new brigade of World class chefs do the minimum of preparation to the food allowing instead their inherent flavours to shine. Giorgio is also extremely proud of the apprenticeship program The Lone Star offers to trainee chefs from the local Hospitality College eager to learn they are showing great potential in the kitchen. Giorgio specializes in restaurant build and installed a Jade Waldorf kitchen, the very best for high performance commercial kitchens. From the in-house bakery to pizzas from a wood stone pizza oven the kitchen turns out memorable meals from beginning to end efficiently, even the desserts are all made in house, including ice creams made with fresh local ingredients such as mango, basil and coconut. Fresh made pastas also feature on the menu in dishes such as Open Ravioli with Wild Mushroom and Butternut Squash and Little Neck Clam Linguine with White Wine, Garlic and Fresh Herbs. The lunch menu offers light appetizers, salads, sandwiches and pizzas while the Main course could be Fresh Market Fish with Grilled Vegetables, Bank Beer Battered Cod served with hand cut chips and mushy peas or Fresh Maine Lobster with garlic herb butter and Couscous. In the evening the menu is more extensive and includes a selection of Pastas, Fish & Seafood and Meats with inventively paired accompaniments and a choice of Celestial Sauces such as Green Peppercorn, Béarnaise and Madeira Jus. Accessories (aka ‘Sides’) like Truffle Mac n Cheese, Smoked New Potatoes and Baby Cauliflower Cheese are decadent and a heavenly ‘Little Stars’ menu is available just for kids.

We say that if the best memories are made in flip-flops let them lead you to The Lone Star! 54

t’s an age-old dilemma; Finding a decorating style that suits his taste and her style is sure to cause some conflict. Often what she has in mind is definitely not going to be his cup of tea and vice versa and thus the Design War Begins! It’s all about compromising and marr ying your looks to create a look that works for both of you. Some of the most interesting spaces are a blend of masculine and feminine elements which make a space personal, eclectic and cozy. Look for common elements such as size, colour or material when meshing looks so they complement each other without being too matchy or too stereotypically masculine or feminine. Going with more natural and neutral elements is always the easiest and safest route, but creating a gender neutral space doesn’t mean it has to be beige and boring. It’s time to let opposites attract. Ditch the design war & end the decorating dilemma. Here are some tips on creating a married space:

The MASTER Bedroom: This room should be a perfect oasis for the both of you. Be inspired by a fresh and neutral hotel look. Avoid overly feminine pastels and floral patterns. Create a serene getaway that works for both your styles. Create interest through lighting and decorative pillows. Photography by Dan Christaldi

68

LIVING BARBADOS APRIL - AUGUST 2014

SOME HELPFUL TIPS: Discuss spaces you both find appealing. Decide on large pieces together and involve each other in decision making for each piece. Grey and green are considered the most gender neutral colours as are some shades of violet and blue. Dark rooms add a masculine note to feminine colours and patterns.

LIVING BARBADOS APRIL - AUGUST 2014

69

The MEDIA room: This will be a space you spend a lot of time in as a couple and so it is essential to ensure you blend design and function. Masculine wall art can be combined with feminine accents for a modern sophisticated appeal. Photography by Dan Christaldi

The DINING room: This is a great area to have a blend of styles. Don’t feel the need to go for a matching set. Mix up your styles for the table and the seating and finish the look with a lighting element.

MORE GREAT TIPS: Agree, not just on a budget, but on what each room will be used for and how much money will be allocated to each item in your space. One person can lead the search for the couch while the other person is responsible for narrowing down the end table picks. He does the research on televisions and she makes the final choice as to which rug completes the look. Sometimes styling unusual pieces together can create the most exciting rooms. Don’t be afraid to be bold and interesting.

AFor Vinthetage Tea Party very best reasons Photography by Julie Chalbaud

On a cool Friday afternoon in the St Thomas countryside, a bevy of charitable ladies turned out in their finery for a good cause, to support the Know Me Love Me Foundation’s Vintage Tea Party fundraiser at Fisherpond Great House. Owned by John Chandler and his wife Rain, this stately home is an exemplary example of old world charm, with its unique Barbadian architecture and period furniture which made Fisherpond the perfect location for an event such as this. A busy morning had seen a hive of activity as this traditional Barbadian Plantation home was decorated with vintage-style decorations, swaths of flowing white material and theme props, while the gorgeous gardens were utilised to their fullest potential and fabulous flower arrangements were the centrepiece on each table. Tiered stands were full to the brim with exquisitely decorated cupcakes, pastries and French macarons and each place setting featured beautifully

designed menus and gorgeous antique tea cups and saucers in a variety of designs and styles. At 3pm, a sea of ladies in hats, gloves, pearls and lace began to arrive and were greeted at the door with a Victorian style paper fan and ushered through the house (catching eager glimpses of the table décor along the way) into the lush gardens where a refreshing glass of Minted Blueberry lemonade awaited. Guests were encouraged to peruse the wonderful selection of generously donated items on display – including a Caribbean Cruise, a weekend in St Lucia, stunning jewellery, beautiful outfits, spa treatments, event tickets and more. Opposite page: Roberta, Lady Simpson, Rafi Simpson, founder of the Know Me Love Me Foundation, his wife Lauren and children from Reynold Weekes Primary, St. Philip. Gina Cummins, Brand Communications and External Affairs Manager with Sol Barbados Ltd with her Victorian fan - a thank you gift to all guests from the Know Me Love Me Foundation

Everyone wandered happily around the verdant surroundings, serenaded by the talented Debbie Reifer performing an acoustic set. As her dulcet tones wafted through the ferns and orchids, more guests arrived, ladies milled around, chatting with friends and making decisions on which items they would bid for. Roberta, Lady Simpson graciously welcomed everyone and shared some of her experiences visiting the schools and children’s homes to donate backpacks. She then introduced her grandson Rafael (‘Rafi’, as he is affectionately known) who shared the Know Me Love Me story. The name of the Charity he founded was inspired by one of his friends who had traveled to Africa and met an orphan boy. When asked if he could have anything he wanted what would it be, his answer was simple…”For people to know I exist, and I want to be loved.” Education would be the tool to bring about change for so many ‘forgotten’ children. The aim of the Know Me Love Me Foundation is to give children the tools to achieve their academic dreams, delivering backpacks filled with educational materials to children who cannot purchase them. “Often the little materials, the trivial items we take for granted, are the very things that stop children from getting an education. It is the notepads, pencils, crayons, rulers, and erasers that can make the difference to a child going to school embarrassed because they don’t have a pencil, notebook or a schoolbag, to a child having the confidence to go forward each day with the supplies that they need.” Education has the biggest impact on the lives of those in need - it has the power to free people trapped by poverty, gives hope for a successful future, provides physical shelter and care for children and can change the future for an entire village. In 2013, the Know Me Love Me Foundation supported children in Barbados through the donation of backpacks filled with such supplies, visiting schools and children’s homes island wide to meet the children and staff to determine

what additional support they can directly give to ensure that children in Barbados benefit from the life-changing opportunity that education can give them. Headmistress of St. Margaret’s Primary, Glendene Hayde had this to say about the work that Roberta, Lady Simpson has carried out on behalf of the Know Me Love Me Foundation in Barbados; “Kind, caring and considerate are just some of the words we use to describe Lady Simpson. Just over two years ago she visited St. Margaret’s Primary to introduce one of her books. The students captured her heart and since then she has been finding ways to enhance their learning experiences. Her inspiring words at Morning Assembly, her participation in Reading Week as well as travelling from her home with six puppies to help enrich the Science curriculum shows her dedication to these students. Thank you Lady Simpson.” Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon, the inimitable John Chandler, brought everyone together to sit down at the tables as the wait staff poured steaming cups of tea and served both sweet and savoury morsels. Conversation flowed to the sound of the grand piano, creating a lovely ambiance. Honouring the theme of the event, gifts were given for the ‘Best Costume’ Angela Simpson, along with a random draw for surprise door prizes; ’Best Head-piece, fascinator’ Gina Cummins and ‘Most Pearls’ Susan Reid which elicited much laughter from the crowd. The event was a tremendous success – and after the tables were cleared and the china washed and put carefully away, the organisers were thankful to not only those who attended, but also to those who made generous donations including: Foster & Ince Cruise Services, Angela Simpson, Hotel Boucan St. Lucia, Gina Hunte, CEI Caribbean, Island Bags, Diamonds International, Going Places Travel, ButterflyBoutiqueBarbados.com, Dolly’s, The Crane Hotel, R& R Cruising, The Cliff Restaurant, Dwellings, Champers Restaurant, Silver Moon Catamaran, Barbados Golf & Country Club, Ryall Fitness, Simpson Motors Ltd, Relish Fresh Café at Simpson Motors, Sol Barbados Ltd, Ela Boutique, Coral Reef Club Spa, Platinum Wines & Andre Williams; the caterers and florists who provided sumptuous delights and gorgeous floral arrangements: Cin Cin Restaurant, Sweet Temptations, Corbins Catering, Anna Went Catering, Simply Flowers and SSMJ Orchids, and of course John and Rain Chandler. Apes Hill Golf & Polo Club

Delivering on their promises! THINK OF THE STUFF YOUR DREAMS ARE MADE OF. NO I MEAN REALLY THINK. WHEN THE SWIRLY SPARKLY FANTASIES DISSIPATE LIKE STALE MIST, WHAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU? FROM CHELSEA TO CHANCERY LANE AND FROM SWITZERLAND TO ST. SILAS HEIGHTS, MOST PEOPLE WANT THE SAME THING. A WARM LOVING HOME FOR THEIR FAMILIES, A SAFE COMMUNITY AND THAT ONE FAMILIAR PLACE WHERE – LIKE THE 80’S SITCOM CHEERS – “EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME”. Well that place is finally coming to the Apes Hill Golf & Polo Club. This calendar year will see the construction and opening of the much-anticipated clubhouse, which will be spearheaded by accomplished local architect Larry Warren. With the preliminary design progressing well, the construction and infrastructure retrofitting of the clubhouse will only add to the bustle and bristling efficiency of this fast growing, diverse community. Moving so fast, in fact that, rentals for existing villas have increased by 20% when compared with the same period for last year and 2015 bookings are already coming in. Prospective purchasers along with rental clients can look forward to a state of the art fitness centre, locker rooms, a luxurious and modern restaurant and bar, flood lit tennis courts and a resort pool. According to Director of Sales, Rentals & Marketing Linda Williams the big pull is that if you start building your home now, it will coincide with the completion of the clubhouse. Speaking of pleasing, the completed clubhouse promises to provide a hub for the families that have chosen to make one of the properties their home. Children who are neighbours at home and in the classroom will have somewhere central and safe to chase each other between the deck chairs under the shady palm trees; couples and groups in need of a relaxing swim and a cool adult beverage after an invigorating round of golf or game of polo can make the clubhouse the last stop before heading home to a light supper. Based on the current offerings, these homes can range from villas of between 2,600 and 3,400 square feet for the semi detached option. While detached villas tend to start at 4,000 square feet and can be either bespoke or from our stock plans. From back fill to paying the bills and providing the villas’ feather dusters, the Apes Hill team will hand hold clients through the entire process of design and construction with duty free concessions and a competitive timeline. The flurry of excitement about the upcoming clubhouse adds to the appeal of the Polo Club, which is growing exponentially. Another big pull for prospective clients is the offering of polo lessons, full chukkas and matches available for players of all ages and skill ranges. Polo Club Manager, James Dickson says that the services being offered are becoming increasingly diverse based on client demand. The Polo School is naturally a place for that sense of community to be reinforced, as it provides what amounts to an extracurricular activity for couples and families with similar tastes and schedules. Added to this are both local and visiting players that James and his caring, meticulous team look after arranging chukkas, matches and tournaments. As usual with James, there’s a gleam in his eye when he mentions exciting new developments on the bloodstock front. Similarly the ever ebullient Linda Williams can always be seen dashing about with phones to each ear in a flurry of red lipstick and blonde hair. But make no mistake, 2014 is going to be a big year for Apes Hill Golf & Polo Club. For certain it will continue to be the place where “everybody knows your name”. hen you see singer Debbie Reifer walk out on stage with her shy demeanour, half a smile playing on her face, you are almost prepared to be underwhelmed. But then she starts to sing and something magical happens. Debbie’s style is unique. Her vocals are pure, simple and sweet. They draw you in and wrap you up in the essence of the song. Afterwards, when you realise she’s also written the lyrics to much of what you’ve just heard, you’re even more in awe. Her laid back, soulful sound has been compared to Norah Jones and her music is a hybrid of many different genres. She has an amazing talent and has caught the ear of many, including celebrity couple Erin Fetherston and Gabriel Sporta who hired her to perform at their Barbados wedding which was featured in Martha Stewart Weddings last year. “I was so nervous!” she said of the milestone performance. “But everything went well. The lead actor from Dawson’s Creek (James Van Der Beek) came up to the stage with his little girl and started dancing with her while we were playing,” she added while fondly remembering the event. Debbie started her career in music just over two short years ago, but her life tells of a love affair with music that started long before that. She was born the first of two children to a Barbadian father and a Jamaican mother, both physicians who were living in the U.S. at the time. They moved back to Barbados when Debbie was two and a half years old. She says she was a bit rebellious, mouthy and slightly awkward as a child. Her one constant was music. “I always loved music, it made me feel amazing whenever I would hear it.” She attended school in Barbados; first at St. Angela’s, then on to Harrison College where she earned a partial scholarship to Drexel University in Philadelphia to study computer engineering. She moved back to the U.S., enrolled in school and began a journey which would lead her away from her musical inclination but also eventually make her realise its importance in her life. “At the time, music didn’t even cross my mind as a study option because I didn’t think it would be socially accepted as a good choice for a career path,” she explained. Debbie finished her studies with a degree in Computer Information Systems, very little to show music wise, and reeling from the loss of her mother who died of cancer during her last few semesters of school. LIVING BARBADOS APRIL - AUGUST 2014

She decided to stay in the U.S. and look for work. “It was a bad time in the U.S. job market,” she remembers. “I spent about 7 months just doing jobs I was over qualified for.” Her break came when she was asked by a friend to help her company write proposals for their bidding season. “I drove down to DC and stayed there all weekend. On the way back home I got a call from their HR department offering me a job,” she recalls. She quickly climbed up the ladder and in a short time she found herself contracted to work for the U.S. Department of Defense, next door to the Pentagon, as an Information Security Analyst, a highly sensitive position as it relates to U.S. national security. “I still have to be careful when I talk about it, but what I essentially did was design and enforce policies to ensure that sensitive information within a system is kept safe,” she explained. Even though the job required grueling hours, sometimes averaging 90 hours a week, Debbie could not ignore the call of her first love, music. She would carve out time to visit a friend in Philadelphia who had a studio. “At the time I wasn’t dreaming of a career as an artist. I was just going for the sheer love of writing and recording songs,” she said. It eventually got to a point where, according to her, her whole day revolved around the thought of music. “I decided that happiness for me was about contentment, not a six figure salary. It was about spending time with the people I love and doing what makes me feel most content, which is music,” she explained. “Music is the one thing I was born to do.” Debbie moved back to Barbados to pursue her musical career full time and hasn’t regretted the decision. The past few years have been busy ones and she has quickly made a mark on the music scene. She recorded an EP, Hearts Like Mine, featuring the song Amber, which was recently picked up by the international non-profit organization The Pixel Project for use in their global campaign to stop violence against women. She’s written for the critically acclaimed local movie, Chrissy and her music is featured prominently in the film’s score. She was chosen from a field of thousands to perform last year at Canadian Music Week, Canada’s premier music showcase and she also headlined a show at the legendary Red Bones Café in Jamaica. At the beginning of this year Debbie was nominated for best new artist at the Barbados Music Awards. Currently, Debbie is working on putting together songs for a new album due for release later on in the year. She’s excited about working with legendary musician and producer Clive Hunt, whom she met and formed an instant connection with in Jamaica. Clive has produced for the likes of Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Cliff, Beres Hammond, Dean Frazer and the Wailers. “Working with him reminds me of how much this is about creating works of art. I never want to stop,” Debbie said of Hunt. She’s also focused on growing her catalogue of music in hopes of getting placement in more films and on TV, one of her major career goals. Despite her successes so far, Debbie remains driven by the fact that she still has a long way to go. “I don’t think I’ve even scratched the tip of the iceberg in terms of what I really want to achieve,” she stated humbly. “For someone who started so late, I’ve made great strides.” “For me, it’s about the music. I feel like I still have so much growing to do. I’m always just striving to put out the best version of the music that’s inside my head.”

Q: Where can our readers hear your music?

A: My songs Amber, We Are Love and Til I Die are on rotation on local radio stations and I perform live every Wednesday night at Cin Cin by the Sea restaurant.

Q: What do you in your spare time?

A: Hmmm. Do I have spare time? I’m almost ashamed to say this but I catch up on Reality TV. My show is Braxton Family Values. I also like going to the beach and reading. The last novel I read was The Red Queen by Phillipa Gregory.

Q: What is on your playlist right now?

A: So many songs, but my favourites right now are Have No Fear by Bird York; Over the Love by Florence and the Machine; and Samba Na Sola by Ceu.

Q: How would you describe your personal style? A: Bohemian, classic, quirky!

Q: What do you want your legacy to be?

A: Great music. Timeless music. Music that touches, heals and inspires change. You can find out more about Debbie at www.reverbnation.com/debbiereifer, www.facebook.com/debbiereifermusic or follow her on twitter or Instagram @debbiereifer.

RISING We love this truly beautiful colour that has taken center stage among the top trending colour palettes for 2014 with its mixture of global, traditional and tribal influences. Indigo has been used as far back as 5000BC and comes from the shrub indigofera tinctoria. It was originally grown in India, Southeast Asia and has since revolutionised the world. This colour is incredibly versatile and gives any space an airy, rich, sophisticated look. Let W Design at Walker’s World help you incorporate this fantastic colour into your own home.

Don’t be afraid to use color! This accent wall color in Rich Navy by Harris Paints opens up the space and contrasts fabulously against the white cushions and furniture.
