Beyond the Glitter and Shine The Crown of Light diamond’s story is even more dazzling

The Crown of Light diamond began its long journey to perfection in Namibia where it is mined, cut and polished. Diamonds International, the sole retailer of the Crown of Light set up mining in the south west nation of Namibia several years ago. The gem quality diamonds recovered from Namibia are like nothing else in the world. Diamonds International committed to cutting and polishing the diamonds within Namibia by locally trained cutters. Not only were the cutters learning a skill to carry them throughout their lifetime, but more income would revert back into the local economy. Crown of Light non-conflict diamonds are sourced and manufactured to the highest standards of ethical business practices. Diamonds International takes great pride in embracing this policy as a means of benefiting lives at each level along the diamond pipeline. They believe that those laboring in this trade and the land which produces these natural wonders have a right to share equitably in the rewards of their manufacture. But the Crown of Light team also looks for opportunities to support grass roots efforts that benefit Namibia as well. When Crown of Light diamonds began their production in Windhoek Namibia in 2008, they soon became aware of a locally operated orphanage that struggled to care for infants and children who were victims of HIV-AIDS. These vulnerable little citizens were abandoned at birth in hospital by parents who had contracted this disease. Older children there became orphaned when their parents succumbed to this plague. But Baby Haven accepted the challenge to nurture and care for these children by instilling a sense of normalcy and hope for those in their care. Today, no trip to the cutting factory is complete without a visit to Baby Haven. Beside their financial support, the Crown of Light team wants to see how the children are thriving in this loving home. Their squeals of delight when the Crown of Light crew delivers new gifts and other treats

confirm that these children are living healthy happy lives like youngsters everywhere else. Diamonds International president and CEO Albert Gad recently visited Baby Haven and relaxed with the children during their playtime. “This is what it’s all about,” Gad beamed, when a toddler jumped into his arms. But shoppers are also foremost in Gad’s heart too. He believes that each customer at Diamonds International becomes like family according to the head of this family-owned business. He feels the company with its iconic Crown of Light diamond has grown because every single person who walks through their doors has a special story and a unique life to celebrate. Gad pays close attention to his core customers. “Our shoppers are a sophisticated consumer, especially those buying larger stones. They already have a collection of fine white diamond jewelry. So they want something different that their friends don’t have, something special that their friends will admire.” The Crown of Light diamond provides that solution for these customers. Keeping in step with consumer trends is key to the momentum Diamonds International enjoys with its Crown of Light diamond, Gad believes. “We listen to and learn what our customers are looking for in diamond jewelry. Then we create pieces that resonate with them.” Gad also sees that island shoppers often celebrate their own milestones with a jewelry purchase. “It’s a very personal thing. Customers want their jewelry to be as unique as their life.” Visit their showroom soon to learn why Diamonds International is the Caribbean’s most recommended jewelry retailer. Be sure to ask their expert staff for a personal preview of the Crown of Light diamond with its radiant charisma. You’ll experience a special diamond without peer in the market today. And with its special backstory, you’ll soon understand why the Crown of Light diamond is more than just a pretty facet.

A NEW TAKE ON A CLASSIC MAKE By Nicola Garcia Photography by Dan Christaldi

WITH A GENTLE NOD TO THE PAST, WINDWARD SHINES BRIGHTLY INTO THE FUTURE

16

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2013 - MARCH 2014

There are some houses that attempt to impress their guests with imitation grandeur, and then there are houses that don’t need to rely on ‘hat tricks and gimmicks.’ The home on the corner lot of Cooper Hill, Sandy Lane, veiled behind ornate iron gates and coral stone walls is one of the latter; as distinguished as it is subtly reserved. Welcome to Windward. The new owners, Nic and Nina Williamson, aquired Windward house in 2010, the house catching their attention with it’s understated charm. “We liked the lot, edged by the spectacular ravine cliff, but most of all, we liked the feel of the house” comments Mr. Williamson. When they took over the property, his goal was to turn this classic house into a contemporary home. He was particularly set in making Windward not just a beautiful feature, but also with a convenient living layout. “To me, a house must be, first and foremost, built for those who live there. The ideal house blends practicality with feel and impact.” Designed by Architect Bruce Jardine, the new Windward is now a two storey, five bedroom manse, if it was a suit and tie before it is now a tuxedo. The enormously tall front doors open inward and guests step straight into a vision, the entrance hall sets the tone for the rest of the house; elegant and refined luxury. A dual iron staircase arches around the room in a majestic fashion framing the first glimpses of the spectacular home. Here in the foyer presides a silvered bronze cheetah statue, the ‘lady of the manor,’ her regal pose casting an air of distinction while just behind her a full view through to the living room is like a welcoming gesture inviting guests in. Four guest bedrooms are located on either side of the entrance, two on the ground floor, and two on the second floor. All en-suite, they have been uniquely decorated and although their layout is similar, each room has its own personality. The decor is Formal dining area with view to garden

For the interior decoration, Nic and Nina Williamson were keen to portray an even mix of calm and vibrancy -“not too busy, but never boring.” This criterion was accomplished with meticulous care by UK based interior designer Lynne Pemberton. Every room represents her signature style of blending intricate patterns and texture with bold colours.

modern, combining English country style quaintness with lively Caribbean colours. The owners were keen to portray an even mix of vibrancy and calm, “not too busy but never boring.” This was accomplished through the meticulous attention of famed interior designer Lynne Pemberton and every room represents her signature style of blending intricate patterns with bold colours. The master bedroom, its own oasis within the house, has all the additions of a luxury suite; a private study room with mini fridge, a spacious walk-in closet and bathroom with a stunning black and white marble-clad shower and a luxurious stand-alone tub. Off the master suite a private veranda overlooks the stunning pool and gardens, the perfect place for a respite to enjoy morning coffee or afternoon tea. Downstairs, guests at Windward will be torn between spending time outdoors or lounging in the cool and inviting living area. This expansive room has two lounge areas, with plush couches and armchairs, the soft colour palette is in muted shades of crème, off white and egg shell. In contrast the furniture is accentuated by an array of patterned throw pillows in bright colours while ornate lamps and elaborate vases liven the tranquil mood. The seating arrangement is intimate and perfect for relaxing in comfort with a good book or entertaining company. The media room was specifically built to indulge in the latest entertainment technology and offers a 56 inch smart TV and a wireless Sonas sound system. This room however is not all gadgets and gizmos: the built in bookcase displays an inspiring variety of collector’s edition hardback books, engaging in all sorts of interests - from the latest trends in fashion to a history of war - there is enough variation to suit any guest’s taste. In the formal dining room an antler chandelier illuminates a country style table with seating for ten, fine meals can be enjoyed here or in the garden-side gazebo where guests can sit around a circular coral stone table and be charmed by the scents and sounds of a tropical evening.

Lynne Pemberton designed the luxurious master bedroom in varied tones and textures of grey with vibrant pops of red. Avid art lovers, Nic and Nina carefully selected all of the art in the house themselves. The pictures seen in this room are fish prints on silk that show incredible detail and were purchased on one of the owners trips abroad.

Downstairs living space opens on both sides to allow cooling breezes to flow

Beautifully showcased throughout the home the owner’s art collection holds pride of place as the couple are avid collectors, this adds another dimension to the cosy atmosphere. French doors open onto an airy veranda and this style of open plan design was part of the essential charm of the old Windward that Mr. Williamson did not wish to lose in the reconstruction. He comments “Though not built by Messel, the old Windward had a likeness about it - open and airy indoors but with an outdoors feeling.” There is a similar ebb and flow to the new Windward’s layout; the eye runs placidly from the living area onto the veranda and trickles down the steps into the garden scene. Just like a family home the kitchen is the heart of the house. Thoughtfully outfitted with commercial grade equipment, spacious countertops, and an oversize island with countertop seating, perfect for casual family gatherings. The Williamsons wanted the kitchen used as a social area rather than just a place to prepare meals and its warmth comes not just from the stove but also from the well lived, inviting atmosphere. A separate building houses an air conditioned gym equipped with cardio machines, free weights and an impressively versatile cable machine. For more leisurely pursuits a beautifully tiled pool is serviced by its own bar and bathroom for convenience while a mix of loungers and seating areas offer guests plenty of space for repose or larger getherings with friends and family. The Wow Factor A PENTHOUSE AT VILLAS ON THE BEACH CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF TROPICAL LIVING WITH THE HELP OF TWO TALENTED DESIGNERS FROM CORAL ISLAND INTERIORS Photography by Dan Christaldi Story by Rachel Ramphal

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2013 - MARCH 2014

35

CORAL ISLAND INTERIORS HAS JUST RECEIVED TWO PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS FROM THE AMERICAS PROPERTY AWARDS 20132014 IN THE CATEGORIES OF ‘INTERIOR DESIGN APARTMENT’ FOR VILLAS ON THE BEACH AND ANOTHER FOR ‘INTERIOR DESIGN PRIVATE RESIDENCE’

36

‘Life is a beach’ as the old saying goes, the very sight and sound of the ocean ‘speed dials’ us into relaxation mode. Leisurely walks with toes in the sand and the sea lapping at our feet, snorkeling over colourful coral reefs and exotic cocktails enjoyed while the setting sun in all her Technicolour glory lulls us into a soporific state. This and more can all be yours at Penthouse 401, Villas On The Beach in historic Holetown. Villas On The Beach consists of eighteen apartments designed by Ian Morrison, one of the leading architects in the region, and this prime penthouse was just completely upgraded and re-decorated and is being offered for sale by Alleyne Real Estate. This turnkey beachfront apartment is accessed by elevator allowing for exclusive privacy and, taking full advantage of the stunning views over the mesmerising blues of the Caribbean Sea. The brief was simple; to create a design that would accentuate the idyllic setting, they loved the blues in the sea and wanted to see them reflected in the unit. The second request was that the décor would be appealing to both a young or more mature clientele. The décor by Coral Island Interiors was chosen to reflect the very essence of this commanding location by bringing in the colour palette from the surroundings, in this case the ocean. In addition to this is a design based on sea life, shells, coral and nautical elements. Cool beach-y hues can be found throughout this luxury apartment connecting to the sea, sky and beach outside. Outdoor living is one of the great advantages of the Caribbean lifestyle and a twenty-four foot wide terrace transitions smoothly through pocketed doors from the living room within. Iron framed furniture and glass topped tables were used on the terrace so that the views were not limited by more solid profile pieces. Here, sand coloured cushions are accented with throw cushions bearing a blue or taupe coral motif while a sea grass rug brings in a textured organic element. While the terrace has been equipped with re-

mote controlled electronic sunshades, the textiles were chosen with the islands elements in mind and are all highly durable. A dining table, buffet as well as a wine cooler and bar fridge are also located on the terrace for guests to enjoy meals al fresco. The living areas are an open plan design so that even when indoors, the striking vistas this apartment commands are always in view, as the sight line travels from the kitchen through the living room and onto the covered terrace. Soaring white pickled ceilings accentuate the space and also keep rooms bright and airy. Four beautifully decorated en-suite bedrooms are elegant without being too formal and offer spacious accommodation for up to eight guests. The apartment boasts two master bedroom suites and, while these both have views out to the sea, the upstairs master has a private balcony, perfect for tanning prive or raising a toast as the sun dips beneath a fiery horizon. In this master bedroom coral and shell motifs can be found in the soft furnishings and even the large marble tiled walk-in shower offers un-interrupted ocean views. Deep spa tubs are the perfect antidote after a day of sun and sea while walk in closets keep clutter at bay and clothes within easy reach.

The downstairs guest bedroom has a subtle nautical scheme, and a Romeo and Juliet balcony also enhances the connection to the outdoors. A concealed pull down stepladder allows access to a storage area making clever use of what was previously an open mezzanine space. The fourth bedroom has been designed as a junior suite with twin beds dressed in fresh, modern hues of fuchsia and acid green. The living areas are an open plan design so that even when inside the striking vistas this apartment commands are always in view. A sleek and modern kitchen has all high-end appliances including a state of the art refrigerator and a food warmer while granite worktops are as beautiful as they are functional; a sit at counter with bar stools can be used for breakfast or more casual meals. The property has been completely furnished to include crockery, cutlery and linens, the new owner can simply walk in with only their personal items. In the living room the two-toned sea turtle triptych is a striking feature hanging aptly above a faux finished tortoiseshell console table and mirrors the real life turtles swimming in the bay below. A modern chandelier wrapped in natural rope is a smart but casual choice that works with the theme and adds further interest, and sea-life accessories were sourced for additional impact and colour. A great source of pride for the Coral Island Interiors team is that the majority of the furniture was locally made to their high specifications by skilled joiners. Most of the accessories were also sourced on island from

a selection of interiors showrooms. This shows the quality of craftsmanship and sources available on island. The designers chose textiles that would stand up to the environment, outdoor fabrics were used wherever possible to with-stand mildew and fading from the afternoon sun while blackout lining was used in all of the bedrooms to prevent drapes deteriorating and block out the sun to keep the air conditioned rooms cooler in the evenings and at night. On the ground floor of the complex is a fully equipped indoor Gym while outside two pools and the beach are your playground. Steps away are all the amenities you would expect while on holiday at a premium destination. Luxury shopping, restaurants, and cafes are all at your fingertips as well as world-class golf and Spas. So is life really a beach one might ask? At Villas On The Beach the answer is a resounding ‘yes!’ For more information on the sale of Penthouse 401 contact Alleyne Real Estate on Tel: 1(246) 432-1159 Email: sales@jalbarbados.com www.jalbarbados.com Coral Island Interiors: Call 1(246) 826-5609/826-5610 Email:coralislandinteriors@caribsurf.com www.coralislandinteriors.com

verybody knows what fast food is, but what about Slow Food? It’s a worldwide movement that’s dedicated to re-balancing the lifestyle that fast food reflects and enables. It aims to change the world by changing the menu, and it’s larger than you might imagine. Founded in Italy in 1989, the movement has branches in over 150 countries. Slow Food’s principles are very pertinent to small islands like ours. With an annual food import bill of half a billion dollars, and about ten days worth of food to live on if the ships stopped coming, Barbados’ food security is more of a joke than anything you could make up about Slow Food taking long to prepare. The name may be new to you, but the movement honours the past. Remember the way food used to be raised and eaten before factory farming, restaurant chains, GMO’s, and transporting commodities long distances from producers to consumers? Now you are getting the picture. Slow Food sees agriculture, food production and gastronomy as parts of the same whole, rooted in ecosystems and cultural traditions. Members advocate for biodiversity and sustainability. They promote the sheer pleasure of fresh, healthy food and insist that it should be produced in ways that do not harm the environment or the workers, and at a fair price. Slow Food reached our shores last year with a chapter founded by social entrepreneur and activist Ian McNeel, health coach and founder of In Model Health Julie Hooper, Secretary of the Organic Growers and Consumers Association (OGCA) John Hunte, sustainability planner Lani Edghill and Fraser Young of Eco Structure Barbados. They made a splash by orchestrating Farm to Table dinners to connect producers, chefs and customers. Small, organic farms provided whatever was available to the chefs - Nick Melillo, who catered the initial event at Hunte’s Gardens, Larry Rogers at Cin Cin, and Chef Moo (Mark de Gruchy) at Cafe Luna. Ian explained, “We procure ingredients from about ten different producers or farmers and take it to the chefs. Hopefully a relationship is struck.” That was the case for John Hunte, who now supplies Cafe Luna as a result of the connection. He said, “Sometimes our farmers need a catalyst outside of the organisation. What Slow Food did was knock on doors which we had not opened ourselves, by negotiating a one-off to show our potential.” Ian would like to see restaurants using more local produce. “Even if it’s just a few items, it would help the farmers to afford to grow more, to supply more. That could completely shift the food economy on this island. And the chefs will get fresher food too.” Shifting to organic is important too, but our small producers struggle to meet demand. The OGCA has 22 members, most of whom grow a variety of crops on an acre or two. Some of the variations can be surprising. At Conscious Farm, Lisa Browne grows much of her produce in little barrels, specialising in leafies like Swiss chard, collards and kale. She also makes plant nutrient tea from compost, and natural pesticide from neem leaves. Sheila Hope-Harewood makes condiments and liver tonic from her produce, and sells moringa seedlings too. Others focus on fruit. As a functional demonstration project, Fraser Young’s Apes Hill home, Sugarwater, is landscaped entirely in edibles as seen in the last edition of Living Barbados magazine. Some non-OGCA farmers share their values. Salad greens specialist, Nature’s Produce, is one. At Hoad’s Dairy Farm in St. Andrew 14 acres are devoted to goats. Fed no additives, these frisky ruminants produce milk to be consumed as is or made into cheese, available in all major supermarkets on the island. Our island fishers fit naturally into Slow Food’s paradigm. Stanton Thomas uses long lines for large fish. When jacks are running, he’ll use a net, but only a small one. “If I had my way, seine nets would be banned for the next five years to allow fish populations to replenish.” Richard Archer of Viridis produces 15 different varieties of mangoes on four acres in St. Thomas, using only organic pest control and fertilisers. Future plans include processing into natural organic juices and jams and direct sales through a new produce retail market to be opened next year at Hopewell Plantation.

Keeping up supply on a commercial level is the biggest challenge facing both small farmers and chefs. Ras Mike Bradshaw, a farming member of the OGCA, laments that when his tractor needs a part, he can’t plough and plant as planned. It’s this type of thing that makes supply dicey, something Ian hopes to help with. John Hunte would love to provision more than one restaurant, but could he? He sounds like Amy Winehouse resisting rehab: “No, no, no!” What the OGCA does quite well is sell to the public at weekend farmers’ markets like Hastings, Holders, and Cheapside. Encouraged by Slow Food, they’ve also started taking orders for weekly boxes containing a mix of whatever’s available. There’s a waiting list, because demand is already exceeding supply. (You can sign up on the OGCA Facebook page.) Slow Food also supports the cultural identity that is expressed in traditional cuisine. Think fried fish on Fridays, souse on a Saturday, or Sunday lunch with Blackbelly lamb stew, yam coucou, fried plantains, and spinach fritters, for example. These are more than just meals, they carry meaning. As long as the food is locally produced, you’re also free to turn tradition on its head. That’s what Chef Moo did at his Farm to Table dinner in September 2013. The menu included a salad of Eden Farm rocket and mustard greens with pickled local beetroot, roasted cherry tomatoes and eggplant, Hoad Farm goat cheese, pumpkin seeds, and avocado pear dressing; and sesame crusted yellow fin tuna with pawpaw relish and local gooseberry balsamic syrup. “I shop at Cheapside market. It’s tastier than imported because it’s fresher and not all GMO. It’s not delivered, so I can compare and select what’s best. I save 28 to 30%, so I can drop my price point, and make the meals more affordable for the average Barbadian. I put about $36,000 a year into the local farming economy through the market. Imagine if ten or twenty more chefs did that.” What about organic food? “The end result is a better environment, so yes!” Larry Rogers of Cin Cin comments, “We as restaurateurs and chefs need to keep building our relationships with local farmers and fishermen. Our farmers have become more efficient in dealing with restaurant demands. Shawn, my purchaser, would go to four or five different farms in a day plus the fish market, because if it doesn’t have to travel for days before it arrives in my kitchens, the fresher it will be. I can get freshly harvested crayfish from Nature’s Produce in the morning and it becomes a star on my menu that night.” As an educational project, Slow Food Barbados started the first organic school farm at the Alleyne School in St. Andrew. Learning starts with tasting and grows from there. “We ask ‘What does an imported tomato taste like compared to these that are grown here?’” said Julie. “And different varieties too, because promoting biodiversity is very important. There’s also a nutrition component, and the canteen is now using some of what the students grow. We’re now starting a recipe contest to encourage the students and their parents to make delicious foods with what we have right here.” There’s so much to do! Ian would like to ramp up agro-tourism, and help fix the problem with Blackbelly lamb production. (Simply put, it sees lower chef demand because it takes certain handling methods to assure best quality.) And then there’s the seed project. Organic, non-GMO, untreated seeds are being given to certain farmers and sold for donations. Ian said, “That brings us to seed saving, which is important. If people did that, they wouldn’t have to re-purchase; it becomes a seed bank of sorts.” Slow Food has a long road ahead here, but the goals are clear. And after all, remember the race between the tortoise and the hare.

Slow Food Events held at Cin Cin restaurant and Cafe Luna have been extremly well attended with lengthy waiting lists of patrons wishing to get a seating. Future events are being planned for this season.

FROM HOME IN BARBADOS WITH JENNY BLANC INTERIORS

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2013 - MARCH 2014

Private residence on the West coast of Barbados decorated by Jenny Blanc Interiors

Two years after launching in December 2011, the Jenny Blanc showroom in St. James has firmly established itself as a destination venue for discerning customers searching for those ‘must-have’ items with which to decorate their homes in Barbados. The range offers everything needed to equip a holiday home from basics such as beach towels, bed linen and tableware, to exquisite lighting, outdoor furniture and those special decorative objets which personalise a room. Emma Blanc, Caribbean Director and Desiree Yhap, Showroom/Design Manager, provide customers with a friendly, personal approach and a wealth of expertise. The stunning location and easy parking attracts many visitors to the showroom and most cannot resist purchasing at least some small item for themselves or as a gift. Jenny takes great pride in the selection of the products the company offers, visiting the top trade shows internationally and choosing the best of the best new designs for the two showrooms in London and Barbados.

Each year new lines are designed in-house increasing the number of unique items specifically made for the Jenny Blanc brand and available nowhere else. Items such as the stunning tropical fruit platters have proved very popular; this year a beautiful dinner service with a new tropical theme is being created for the line. Experience of the outdoor lifestyle and rigours of the tropical climate in Barbados together with the local know-how of Barbadian-born, Sue Thomas Richardson, have made the company experts in what products will work and last. The company designs its own bespoke range of furniture working with top local Barbadian artisans to create unique pieces often made from locally sourced materials such as pickled pine/ash, metalwork and coralstone. The Jenny Blanc showroom also offers a range of beautiful artworks from local and international artists. For a two week period in early 2014, the showroom in Barbados will clear its wall space to promote the works

of the best local artists. A private viewing will be held to launch the event with guests invited to preview the exhibition and meet the artists. Every year the award-winning design team take on new, exciting projects for clients who have discovered their work in the Caribbean or the houses they have designed in the UK. 2014 will be no exception with designs for townhouses and luxury villas in the pipeline. The Jenny Blanc style has been described as ‘irresistibly beautiful’. Underscoring this style is Jenny’s core belief that a home should first and foremost be comfortable. Whether contemporary, classic or more traditional, each project features a sensitive use of colour and rooms which flow seamlessly from one to the next creating a peaceful and relaxing ambience. Wherever they design a house, the design team takes inspiration from their client’s wish list and the style and location of the property. An initial client meeting is usually held at the London studio which has an extensive product library and where the client’s plans and aspirations can be discussed and understood. Further progress meetings are then held at the studio or at the client’s home either in the UK or abroad. Jenny and Sue recognise that their clients need an inclusive design and project management service supported by an experienced and creative design team. This, together with an exceptional knowledge of the best, most beautiful fabrics and furnishings, wins their clients’ confidence that Jenny Blanc will create the home they have always wanted. Jenny is always personally involved in every project to ensure that each finished home meets her exacting standards and attention to detail. Jenny spends the high season from December to March in Barbados overseeing projects and meeting clients; her daughter, Emma, is married to Barbadian landscape architect, Russell Corrie, and for Sue ThomasRichardson, Barbados is her birthplace and home to her family. The com-

pany is fast becoming a firm fixture in Barbados and an integral part of Barbadian life. It plans to work cooperatively with the local business and design community which has welcomed it so warmly over the 12 years Jenny Blanc has been designing homes there. Plans for a Jenny Blanc Design scholarship are currently in discussion with the Barbados Community College. This one-year scholarship (6 months UK/6 months Barbados) is a youth development programme for BCC students aged under 25 designed to further the student’s education with participation in a UK-based college course in design and with hands-on experience with training in both the UK and Barbados showrooms. As part of their course students will be given the option to work on a qualifying project specified by Jenny Blanc Interiors which, together with their course work, will form the basis of the selection process. The successful candidate will be chosen by the course tutor and Jenny Blanc Interiors from amongst students completing the BCC interior design course during the year ending May 2014 based on their talent, vision and direction. 2014 looks like being a busy year for Jenny Blanc Interiors both in the UK and Barbados with fabulous new projects and some spectacular new products. PAINTING THE WORLD

AFTER 40 YEARS OF TRAVELLING THE WORLD TO PAINT IN OVER 67 COUNTRIES, IT IS OUR PRIVILEGE THAT AFTER A TEN-YEAR HIATUS ANDREW HEWKIN WILL ONCE AGAIN DISPLAY HIS WORK IN BARBADOS. STORY BY SUSAN COLBY.

66

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2013 - MARCH 2014

Images compliments of Andrew Hewkin

THE LIST OF COLLECTORS OF ANDREW HEWKIN PAINTINGS IS LONG AND SUBSTANTIAL. IT INCLUDES NOT ONLY MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY BUT A DIVERSE GROUP OF WHO’S WHO AMONG INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITIES AND ART CONNOISSEURS. ALONG WITH NOTABLES SUCH AS THE BBC, CARTIER INTERNATIONAL, BRITISH AIRWAYS, BOB MONKHOUSE AND THE ROCKEFELLERS.

Barbados is in for a treat! St. Peter’s Bay will play host to an exhibition of work by the internationally acclaimed artist, Andrew Hewkin, M.A., sponsored by Chattel House Realty. This exciting collection opens for viewing from 23rd December and will run for five weeks; it’s shaping up to be an absolute must for this season’s calendar! Andrew was born in Sutton Coldfield in the Midlands in 1949. There is always that one child in class to whom all others look in awe when the illustration lesson comes around requiring a map; that dreaded drawing. He or she is that ‘special one’ who seems effortlessly able to command their pencil to move around the page and conjure up a recognizable image as if by magic! Surely Andrew Hewkin was that little boy and there could not have been much doubt about what route he should follow when he left school. Fittingly, Andrew attended Stourbridge College of Art from 1966-1967 and went on to receive a First Class Honours degree in Fine Art from the West of England College of Art in Bristol. In 1973 he obtained a Master of Arts degree in Fine Art Painting with First Class Honours from the Royal College of Art in London. He won the John Minton Scholarship for travel and The Burton Painting award. He also exhibited at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions of 1972/73 and was featured in Vogue magazine as the most promising student at the Royal College. He would go on to become a regular contributor to Vogue over the following years.

By the age of 24, Andrew had exhibited in successful one-man shows at the Trafford, Asset and Piccadilly Galleries in London as well as the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. The Art World was beginning to take note and in 1976 he received an invitation to live and work in Mustique. He was commissioned to produce an exhibition for Lord Glenconner (then The Right Honourable Colin Tenant) and, charged with the challenge of recording and highlighting the notorious “Gold Parties” of the 1970’s in Mustique, he set off on his journey. The pieces produced in this period, a collection of colourful, dynamic representations of intoxicating and alluring celebrity-filled events, formed the New York Exhibition shown in 1979 which was used as a vehicle to promote the sale of Real Estate on the island. It was while he was working in Mustique that Andrew’s interest in travel and cultural interpretation grew and Barbados became a favourite destination. He spent many an extended visit here in the late 70’s and even thereafter found himself returning frequently; loyal both to old friends and to the continuing abundance of artistic inspiration to be found in this small but colourful island. Although Andrew returned to England in 1979 (where he exhibited for the next 20 years at Hamiltons Gallery in Mayfair and subsequently at The Gallery in Cork Street where his work can be viewed today), he has

68

frequently left his UK base to travel the world, paintbrush in hand, absorbing and carefully interpreting the unique personality of each country he visits; and there are many. Despite this wanderlust, Barbados has always remained a favourite retreat. Like so many others, he was drawn inevitably back, intrigued by the exuberance and elusive rhythm unique to these shores. In 2000 Andrew was asked to mount an exhibition commemorating the Millennium at Royal Westmoreland and the success of this venture led to consecutive shows over the following three years. ‘Art and Interiors’ (Altman) in 2001, Sugar Hill in 2002 and a retrospective for Sandy Lane in 2003. These exhibitions also resulted in a re-connect to Mustique and two pieces to commemorate events for The Mustique Company were commissioned. The second of which was for their auction of 2008, part of their 40th Anniversary celebrations attended by Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge. The list of collectors of Andrew Hewkin paintings is long and substantial. It includes not only members of the Royal Family but a diverse group of who’s who among international celebrities and art connoisseurs. Many may not be named here but some notables, (in no particular order), The BBC, Cartier International, Vogue Magazine, British Airways, Thomas Cook, Dunhill International, The Embassy Club (London), Sir Michael

and Shakira Caine, Bob Monkhouse, Sir Bruce Forsythe, Sir Michael Wigan, Susan George, The Rockefellers, Jack Nicholson and David Bowie are a random example of the eclectic mix of collectors of his work. After 40 years of travelling the world to paint in over 67 countries, it is our privilege that, after a ten-year hiatus Andrew will once again display his work in Barbados. This Exhibition, “Barbados Revisited” is the result of much consideration and many visits to the island since 2003 to plan and prepare for the show. Not only does the collection depict the more obvious elements of beautiful Barbados, but it demonstrates a far deeper analysis of a unique lifestyle, constant even

while evolving. By using colour, tone and light-humidity, to represent the tranquility within the local culture, music and harmony of the island, the artist has attempted to evoke a certain ‘vibrancy of peace’ and the enviable ‘power-toforget’ so special to Barbados. This is an eclectic and powerful collection show-casing Barbados then and now through a combination of earlier pieces and new, specially produced additions. The newer pieces reflect an artistic progression which parallels the subtle nuances and local lifestyle changes observed by the artist over the years. A sampling of some international pieces lends cohesiveness and connectivity for the benefit of those less familiar with Hewkin’s work. Hewkin has, through his paintings, created a beautiful and dignified record of the many elements of our island life with attention to the natural ecological and social changes he has observed during his visits over nearly four decades. At the same time, by incorporating surreal and metaphysical imagery, he succeeds in liberating the viewer to follow the journey further. The license and nature of art is the privilege of both the creator and the observer. “Barbados Revisited” promises to be a rewarding and aesthetically exciting experience for both the seasoned aficionados and the simply curious. Put this straight at the top of your ‘TO DO’ list! Appointments can be arranged to discuss the artist’s work, further projects or commissioned pieces by calling Jeremy Palmer on (246) 230-2099. Andrew will be available and on the island for the duration of the exhibition. To learn more about his work visit www.andrewhewkin.com

PERSON OF INTEREST

JEREMY GUNN By Natasha Simpson Photos by Mike Toy and Jeremy Gunn

I HAVE TO ADMIT AS WE APPROACHED THE LUXURIOUS WEST COAST VILLA, WHICH WAS THE PLACE FOR OUR MEETING THAT MORNING I WAS A LITTLE ANXIOUS TO MEET OUR PERSON OF INTEREST. FROM ALL THE RESEARCH I HAD DONE JEREMY GUNN WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED AND INTERESTING INDIVIDUAL WITH A RICH FAMILY HISTORY AND IMPRESSIVE IF NOT INTIMIDATING PORTFOLIO. AS WE ENTERED THE MAIN GATES OF THE LUXURY PRIVATE PROPERTY ON THE WEST COAST JEREMY GUNN GREETED US. HIS DOWN TO EARTH DEMEANOR QUICKLY PUT ME AT EASE AND BEFORE I KNEW IT I WAS LOST IN THE WONDER OF THE PROPERTY AND CAPTIVATED BY BOTH JEREMY’S CHARM AND HIS STORY. Jeremy was born in St. Vincent and lived there until he was thirteen years old. The Gunn family goes back seven generations in St. Vincent & The Grenadines and his grandmother’s family owned Mustique and sold it to Colin Tennant in 1958. His mother was born in St. Vincent and Jeremy’s grandfather; Sir Ronald Garvey was the British Administrator for the island in the 1940’s. His mother, Lavinia returned in the late sixties and met his father Geoffrey. Jeremy spent many family holidays in Barbados visiting friends and fondly refers to the West Indies as home. At thirteen years old a curly haired Jeremy with a prominent Vincentian accent arrived in England for boarding school. After boarding school Jeremy went onto study Engineering Product Design and worked for a year in Research & Development on the design and manufacture of scuba diving jackets in Cornwall before returning to the Caribbean. He spent nine months in St. Vincent and then went to Canouan where he worked for two and a half years on the design and development of a luxury resort designed by Italian Architect Luigi Vietti for the Northern half of the island. He then had the opportunity to return to the UK to work with David Collins, the designer behind many of the most recognized and glamorous names in the restaurant industry – from the bar at Claridge’s to the Wolseley. Without even realizing it at the time, this boy from the Caribbean was about to embark on the experience of a lifetime and at the same time build an outstanding portfolio of work.

This is where his knowledge of Product Design helped tremendously as he worked on the design and fit out of luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants and bars which included J Sheekey with David Collins, Corinthia Hotels in Praque, Budapest and Lisbon with GA Design International, and London Park Lane Inter Continental Hotel with J2 Design. He lived in Lisbon for almost two years spending an average of six to nine months preparing drawings for the project and a year on site. Job offers were pouring in as is the usual case with talented people, and one of them happened to be in Barbados. When asked what influenced his decision Jeremy said, “I wanted to come home so I took the plunge in 2005 and took the job in Barbados”. Jeremy started Italica Architettura & Design Inc in Barbados and is the company’s senior Designer. Italica Architettura & Design Inc has been involved in a substantial amount of both Design & Build as well as Design projects at all levels of size and budget. They have worked on an expansive list of luxury villas and condominiums including projects on Royal Westmoreland and Sandy Lane Estate. Jeremy however did want to emphasize the fact that he works on all sizes and design styles of projects with varying budgets and is currently also working on a 2,500 sq ft three bedroom contemporary home on an elevated lot overlooking South Point and Oistins Bay. The design is very clean lined with a mixture of textures and finishes such as coral render and natural unfinished timber. As I was interviewing Jeremy, the words that kept coming up were “details or detailing”. I asked him to explain exactly what this meant and it was clear that simple things that make a home are often overlooked by the untrained eye. According to Jeremy “Details are the elements which give the completed project individuality.” Most often he will work with architectural plans and elevations and then decide for example, what sizes and finishes to use for hardware, joinery and ceiling details, lighting and tile layouts. Not only does Jeremy make the concept fully functional but also aesthetically pleasing. During the visit to one of his latest projects his talent and keen eye for detail was evident. The Arebescato marble slabs in the master bathroom had been ‘book matched’ cut in a technique He has worked on luxury that the floor to ceiling tile matched up perhotels and fine dining fectly, in a guest bedroom the air condition restaurants in Praque, the unit had been set into the wall that it was alUK, Lisbon and Budapest. most unrecognizable and the antique Indian Jeremy makes the concept doors where fitted and hinged with modern fully functional but also hardware that made the doors functional. aesthetically pleasing. Apart from his educational accolades and portfolio of incredible properties what is also impressive is Jeremy’s ability to work and communicate well with people involved in the project. While this may seem obvious, the ability to maintain good relationships with both clients, project members and staff can at times be challenging but it is imperative in the completion of a successful project. Jeremy’s versatility and diversity can be seen not only in his ability to work on jobs of different sizes but in his choice of social activities. He describes that a typical Friday night could be at somewhere like Drift Lounge on the West Coast drinking cocktails and end at Chris’s place in Gibbs for ribs and beer. He admits that it is not so much the place but the people that count. Jeremy Gunn is an incredibly talented and experienced individual whose attention to detail elevates any project he works on regardless of size or budget. His personality and cultured background make him increasingly interesting and easy to be around. One of my favourite facts about him may be inconsequential when it comes to his design and details background but was indeed very interesting and unexpected. When asked about his taste in music, he answered saying it is an eclectic mix - very much like his design style, adding that one of his favourite albums was Buju Banton’s Til Shiloh. Jeremy is an accomplished, interesting and impressive man and far from intimidating. It’s fair to say that he is most definitely a person of interest.

Q: What is your fondest childhood memory? A: Holidaying in Bequia with family and friends. The journey always started with

the seemingly chaotic scenes at the Kingstown port getting onto the Grenadine inter-island schooner Friendship Rose. Always a mad rush to load one more thing on board before casting off for the lovely sail south to Bequia with the exciting possibility of seeing dolphins or even a whale.

LIVING BARBADOS NOVEMBER 2013 - MARCH 2014

77

Home in Gables Estates, Miami, Florida where Jeremy was the lead consultant designer on all finishes, fit out and detailing.

Q: What projects have you been working on? A: Just completed is Footprints Beach Villa on the West coast. Previously a Spanish styled

building it was completely transformed into a contemporary, luxury beach villa. It has the most stunning elevated views through tall palm trees of the beach and vibrant colours of the sea. The interior design was carried out by Kelly Hoppen from the UK which will make this a very unique residence.

Q: Who or what has been your greatest design influence? A: In the Caribbean, we have a tradition of light, open and airy spaces using local

materials which influence me in all design projects, sometimes in new and novel ways.

Q: What is one thing you would like to see implemented in Caribbean homes? A: A very simple change of enlarging windows in bathrooms. I recommend as much natural light and cross ventilation in a bathroom as you have in other larger rooms.

Q: Where would you suggest that people splurge and save in building or remodeling a house? A: Splurge on doors, windows and landscaping. Doors and windows are so important

in providing light and ventilation and now, more than ever security. Good landscaping takes a nice house and makes it a great house. Save on floor finishes such as porcelain instead of marble.

Q: Could you share one of your design secrets or rules with us? A: Design what you need and not what you want. A smaller home with money spent

on better finishes and fit-out is far better than a large home with a multitude of unused rooms and spaces. To contact Jeremy call him on 1 (246) 256-1272 or email him at jeremy.gunn@italicadesign.com visit www.italicadesign.com 78

MAC-NIFICANT By Nicola Garcia Photos by MAC Cosmetics

THE EVOLUTION OF MAC; HOW A SMALL BRAND CREATED FOR “THE TRADE” GREW INTO A WORLDWIDE COSMETIC PHENOMENON Step into any department store and almost instantly you are besieged by makeup artists from dozens of counters vying for your attention, all claiming to be the best brand on the market. The already overwhelmed customer may be unsure about which products will work for them, but the savvy consumer soon learns that once you go MAC you never go back! The brand was originally established in 1984 by Frank Toskan, a makeup artist and photographer, and Frank Angelo a hair salon owner in Toronto, Canada. Their taste for bold colours and thirst for theatrical expression led them to create their own makeup line. They wished to show that true beauty could be found in rich colour schemes which could be worn by all ages, all races and all sexes. This philosophy stays just as true today and is the principle of the MAC cosmetics brand. The humble beginnings of this now global brand are filled with stories of Toskan’s family helping to box eye shadow around the kitchen table. The idea behind MAC (Makeup Artists Cosmetics) was that it would be a line created to be available for ‘the trade’, i.e only to makeup artists. Then in 1986 supermodel Linda Evangelista praised MAC’s ‘Spice’ Lip Pencil creating an instant buzz on the international fashion scene. To this day MAC remains a strong presence behind the scenes at fashion shows all over the world creating complimentary looks when the models strut down the catwalk. This initiated a bevy of celebrity endorsements for the company’s cutting edge products. During an interview with the Huffington Post, Toskan describes the idea for the brand as one born out of necessity. “There weren’t a lot of products that gave a saturated colour that showed up vibrantly in photographs so I started experimenting. Our first product was a nonLeft: 2013 Holiday Collection “Divine Night” available in November from MAC stores in Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, Holetown and Cave Shepherd, Bridgetown. matte lipstick – the first lipstick ever that looked on the lips like it did in the tube, no shine and no distortion. Soon I was designing brushes, lipsticks and powders and selling them to makeup artists like Debi Mazar, who was working with Madonna and others on the cutting edge of fashion, hair and makeup. They not only used the products but also gave me candid feedback and great ideas. It’s not often that you can test your products with industry leaders – it was a proactive way of ensuring their quality.” This break in the industry led to a growth spurt and within 15 years MAC had opened 300 stores worldwide. MAC is also a conscious company with a big heart and in 1994 the MAC Aids Fund was established. The charity has raised over US$270 million for women, men and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Eventually the company was sold to Estee Lauder Inc where it has increased its brand strength to become a global phenomenon. Today MAC is still the name on every celebrities lips; both figuratively and literally. The company has cemented its reputation as an “eye catching, eternally young” brand and over the years they have turned their focus to supplementing their namesake. Knowing how influential pop culture is, the company instinctively extended their hand to join forces between their cosmetic geniuses and famous faces. Collaborations with the most talked about celebrities resulted in impressively avante garde collections season after season. For years MAC has selected iconic figures such as Ru Paul, Debbie Harry, Elton John, Missy Elliot, Boy George and Lady Gaga to name a few. There has been no shortage of ‘super cool’ celebrity campaigns and the Knowing how influential latest icon to join forces with MAC is POP culture is, the company currently one of the world’s biggest superstars and fashion forward style instinctively extended their vixens… our own Rihanna. hand to join forces with Earlier this year, Living Barbados was the famous and their own invited to the MAC Fall Trends Presencosmetic geniuses. A part of this presentation is a step by step demonstration on how to replicate the trend, turning a ‘made for stage’ look into glamorous everyday wear. “Intensity” is the theme for this year’s autumn/winter collection. Their ‘Rebelle’ line focuses on the eyes, piling on layers of black and charcoal in a variety of textures. Heavily shadowed eyelids are defined by black eyeliner and sexily smeared to ‘bleed.’ For contrast, metallic eyeliner in used at the corners of the eyes to reflect light and dimension. On runway shows at Roberto Cavalli and Donna Karan this gothic/glam style gives the ‘smoldering eye’ a resolute comeback. Other trends in this season’s collection follow a similar subversive nature. The ‘Perspecx-tive’ line uses glossy eyes and cheeks to give a modernized sleek skin texture. ‘Spiritual-ize’ rely on dove grey and pastel palettes and striking eyebrows; the effect is dually cold and soft, portraying an intimately ethereal intonation. This edgy fashion would normally have the most confident woman questioning how to pull this look off, but senior makeup artist Gisel Calvilo demonstrated how easy these are to apply. All of the products for this season are designed to make the transition from runway to real life effortless. According to MAC, playing it safe would be ’so last season.’

RiRi looking fierce in her new campaign for MAC, rocking a deep raisin lipstick color called ‘Talk That Talk’. Other Fall collection “must have” items that we love include ‘RiRi Woo’ lipstick, ‘Her Cocoa’ eye shadow kit and brush 187SE (all shown on left). Oh, be still our Macloving beating hearts!

The new RiRi (Heart) MAC collection is a dynamic mix of colours, contours and classic beauty. A testament to her endless creative resources, MAC has agreed to continue their promotion for not just one season but four consecutive makeup lines. For both the company and Rihanna this is a first. “We always say that MAC likes to go on a date but doesn’t want to go into a relationship,” says John Demsey group President of the Estee Lauder Co. Inc. “This relationship with Rihanna is a long-term one that involves the development of four distinct colour initiatives.” The first products were launched in June this year and the whole line sold out in less than three hours. The second line of products made their debut in August and the third edition was released in October. Considering how quickly the two earlier lines were snapped up, customers in Barbados placed their orders for this third collection early, and once again, it was a smashing sell out. The fourth will be a special line arriving in early December for the festive season. The colours of the collection are all thoughtfully crafted with a lipstick to suit every personality or mood; ‘RiRi Boy’ matte vivid purple lipstick is perfect for bold vixens, ‘Heaux’ matte berry is more suited to demure ladies. Rihanna of course put her own twist on the classic statement lipstick ‘RiRi Woo’ a relentlessly cool, matte red. Rihanna continues to wave our flag all over the world; her rose gold, shimmery bronzer, aptly named ‘Barbados Girl’, suits any complexion and is made to create the appearance of a glow from the inside out. How inspired girls in Barbados must feel knowing a powerhouse cosmetics company like MAC has an amazing collection with their national celebrity as the beauty inspiration. We are proud of this ‘Barbados girl’ who like MAC came from humble beginnings but has taken the world by storm!

25 YEARS OF MONTES SIMPLY MAGICAL! It was a night of magical Montes moments as The Wine Circle of Platinum Wines celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Montes wines with a dinner and wine tasting at Cin Cin Restaurant. Representing the Montes winery in Chile, Export Manager Sonia Montanares and Chief Oenologist (winemaker) Jorge Gutierrez were on hand to chat with guests, share some of the history of Montes and to talk about the various wines paired with each course, while a slideshow explored the famed Feng Shui Montes winery – one of the only gravitational wineries in the world. The selection of wines included Montes’ flagship Purple Angel – an elegant yet powerful red made from Carmenere grapes, a varietal considered to be extinct but was rediscovered by Montes in Chile. The philosophy of Montes from day one has been to produce premium quality wines and establishing Montes’ position as the premier Chilean winemaker. A great time was had by all...Salud! ASK THE

EXPERTS

Carol Hanschell is an Attorney-at-law with over 25 years experience at the Barbados Bar. She specializes in corporate commercial law with emphasis on banking and property transactions.

Q

My goddaughter and her husband are excitedly planning to build a dream home. They want to buy a plot of land to build their new home and they have been looking around for some time. On a few occasions the term “covenants and restrictions” have been mentioned to them. Is this something that they need to know about?

A

Covenants are obligations relating to the ownership of property which normally forbid certain acts concerning the property. They have to be performed or adhered to by the Purchaser of a lot and may vary from one development to the other. Restrictive covenants may deal with such matters as building restrictions, restrictions on carrying on a business and/ or keeping animals, restrictions on the external appearance of a building, tidiness and sanitation of the lots and other general matters.

Q

My neighbour is selling a one bedroom condominium unit on the South Coast. I heard that the transaction costs for the seller in a property transfer matter are more than when you purchase. Am I correct to advise my neighbour of this?

A

As a seller your neighbour must pay the property transfer tax of 2.5% of the value of the transfer and stamp duty at the rate of 1% of the consideration for the sale, as well as the real estate commission. These costs don’t apply on a purchase.

Q

My brother and I are bajans living overseas. Our father recently died in Barbados and left us an acre of land. How do we decide where we can build our houses?

A

A Land Surveyor will assist you by surveying the property and preparing a Plan showing the property divided into 2 lots. After obtaining Town Planning permission to subdivide the land, your Attorney will assist you with obtaining Probate for your father’s Estate and preparing a legal document called an Assent. This will vest the lots in your brother and yourself according to your decision as to who should take Lot A and who should take Lot B. Once this process is completed you can proceed with your building Plan.

Q

As visitors to Barbados we were recently advised that the property we are purchasing in Barbados is owned by an offshore company. If we agree to purchase the company that owns the property what additional responsibilities would this structure have?

A

The additional responsibilities arise because the company is incorporated outside of Barbados, i.e, in the British Virgin Islands or some other jurisdiction. This means that you are required to pay the annual licence fees in that territory, file annual returns in Barbados and keep the financial statements and Income Tax filings of the Company up to date. In addition, the normal property ownership expenses apply such as land tax, house insurance and maintenance of the property. 98
