100th Anniversary Commemorative Calendar

Peace’s Origins German - Polish Lutheran Immigrants (many from Suwalki, Poland) settled in Scranton to work in the mines.

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scranton Established in 1895‌

First worship service held January 7, 1917 here at the Welsh Congregational Church (building still exists three blocks from Peace church today). The Benjamin Estate, on the corner of Parker St. and Main Ave., was purchased. It was being used as a rooming house and so it took some effort to renovate. It was dedicated April 2, 1917 as the temporary worship home for the congregation.

Rev. Adolf Dasler, first pastor of Peace, led Rev. John Befus a number of German speaking members of Ordained and installed June 3, 1917 Rev. Paul J. Engelbert Immanuel and formed Installed September 29, 1918 the new congregation.

John Samuel Schweitzer 1854-1919 Founding member of Peace Lutheran, along with William and Philip Schweitzer, Fred Schack, Matthew Klees, Jacob Penzek, August Eidinger, Matthew Rudat, Richard Breswitz, Gustaf Monske, Jacob Korban, August Schlesser, Fred Eidinger, William Schmidt.

The Roaring ‘20s

The building of Peace Lutheran Church was completed within 5 months and the dedication service was December 2, 1928. It was less than a year later that the stock market crashed and ushered in extremely difficult times for the congregation which was saddled with paying the church mortgage. Survive they did - and even thrived as God’s people.

Rev. Henry Camin, installed as pastor Nov. 27, 1921. He would serve a total of 43 years as pastor of Peace Lutheran.

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” - 1John 4:16

“The Heavenly Father still addresses these words to us: ‘This is My beloved Son!’ He will continue to do so until the Day of Judgment, nor will heaven ever be closed again. When you are baptized, partake of Holy Communion, receive the absolution, or listen to a sermon, heaven is open, and we hear the voice of the Heavenly Father; all these works descend upon us from the open heaven above us.” - Martin Luther on the Transfiguration of our Lord

The 1950s were certainly some of the best times for Peace Lutheran Church, as well as for the larger Lutheran and Christian community. We can give thanks for:

The 1950s

+ The Walther League (young adult activities) + Building the church parsonage in 1954 for $21,000! + Digging out more of the basement of the church by hand! + Lutheran Women’s Missionary League formed‌ Many women involved with the Ladies Guild.

Matthew and Minnie Rudat

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. - Psalm 8:1-2

When Rev. Camin (pictured at left with Helen, his wife) retired in 1964, the church had grown from a communicant membership of 34 (when he arrived in 1921), to over 300! The title of “Father of Peace was bestowed on him by the congregation. But times were changing, both in the world at large, and in the church, and Rev. Theodore Hanus was ordained and installed July 5th, 1964. He led the congregation in its 50th Anniversary Jubiliee Paulette and Richard Fredrickson were married in 1967 and are celebrating their 50th anniversary

Elwood Eidinger and Alfred Klees

Rev. Eduard Vajda faithfully served Peace from Dec. 1979 until he died Nov. 25, 1988. Pastor Vajda was incredibly gifted in the arts and there are still many examples of his work throughout the church. Above he is pictured at the baptism of one of the refugees the church sponsored from SE Asia.

The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy… Psalm 111:7

The 1980s Peace Lutheran has been always so blessed by the Schwetizer family since the beginning. This is a picture was taken as Phillip (last surviving charter member of the church) was celebrating his 100 birthday. Pictured are Harold, Carolyn, Elsie, Grace, Lorraine, and Lillian in the front.

Peace Lutheran has always had active youth. In the 80’s they did many dramatic presentations of the scripture. This picture is from 1982 and is missing two of its members. Michele Cizik and Jodie Hafich were tragically killed along with six other friends in a 1981 car accident. It was one of the most difficult times in the the congregation’s history. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” - Psalm 116:15

“I am afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures and engraving them in the heart of the youth.” ― Martin Luther
