hether it’s taking the stage or recording an album, Heather Williams was born to make music. The singer-songwriter, named one of Billboard’s Artists To Watch in 2011, creates music from a unique perspective – one of complete transformation. Williams’ childhood was filled with intense turmoil, growing up with her mother and stepfather in extreme poverty, sharing the garage with her brother for a bedroom. She says her childhood was centred around devastating abuse at the hands of her stepfather, once even being chained to a tree overnight as punishment. At age 11 Williams’ mother gave her away and she

went to live with her grandfather. Filled with the pain of past abuse and rejection, and now living with more freedom but little guidance, she tried to numb the realities of her life by getting lost in drugs and alcohol. Life was spiralling out of control and Williams later found herself homeless and considering suicide. It was at this point that her life would be miraculously transformed. “I had been living on the streets for a few months at the point of time when I reconnected with my birth father,” she tells Living Light News. “I had really hit rock bottom.” continued on page 2

s reigning gold medalist in the Olympic decathlon, Bryan Clay excels at hurtling objects like the javelin across a field. Yet there was a time when the only things he threw were fists – at walls, classmates, teachers, and even his stepfather. “I wasn’t aware that there were different emotions; I was only aware of anger,” the 32-year-old track star says. “The only things I saw on TV or modeled in my house were anger and abuse.” Clay grew up primarily in Hawaii in a tight-knit family. But his parents’ divorce when Clay was 10 launched him onto a decade-long path of violence. “When I got sad or disappointed, it turned into anger. I never knew how to be happy,” he explains. “When I got angry, it turned into rage. I would just explode.” Those explosions morphed into cutting, suicide-themed writing, and constant fights and suspensions at school. A counselor suggested

sports as a way out. Clay was given a choice: swimming or track and field. Those were the only sports without physical contact with others. Because he disdained Speedos, Clay picked track. Or, as he would write years later in his book Redemption: A Rebellious Spirit, A Praying Mother, And The Unlikely Path To Olympic Gold (Thomas Nelson), track picked him. “For me, track was all positive,” he writes. “When I ran, my head was clear. It gave me space to think through things in my life.” So he kept running, and running well. His sophomore summer, the 5’10”, 175-pound Clay met Chris Huffins, an Olympic bronze medalist decathlete. Huffins encouraged him to try events like pole vault, hurdles, and shot put for fun. Since there is no high school decathlon, Clay stuck to his running events. continued on page 2

pole vault, javelin, and 1,500 metres. The partying, however, continued. “For the first two years at APU, I lived up to my commitment to party, run track, and party some more,” he writes. “If I was going to a Christian school, I was going to do it my way.” A fellow athlete gave him a different perspective. Sarah Smith was a javelin thrower and committed Christian. As they dated, Clay witnessed the peace a relationship with Jesus Christ brings and wanted to marry her. But he also wanted to live life on his terms, showing up to Monday’s practice hung over from the weekend. Sarah ended their relationship, telling Clay, “We’ll never get back together until you become the man of God I know you want to be and I know He wants you to be.” That statement drove him to re-evaluate his lifestyle. Clay grew up attending church, but something never clicked. Now, as Clay fervently searched the Bible for answers, found a mentor, and joined a discipleship group, he knew what was missing. In a middle-of-the-night desperation prayer session, Clay gave up running his own life. “Lord, I don’t have anybody else,” he prayed. “I’ll take a chance on my faith, and it will just be me and You.” Clay’s behaviour drastically changed. His athletic focus increased, garnering wins and top-three finishes at the NAIA decathlon championships and USA Championships. Despite his small size (the average decathlete is over six feet tall and 200 pounds), Clay’s scores skyrocketed as he honed his techniques. In 2004, he married Sarah and won the first of his three titles at the

As Clay’s wins piled up, college coaches took notice. Yet his negative behaviour hadn’t disappeared; he experimented with graffiti, drinking, and smoking weed. At Huffins’ and his mother’s urging, Clay attended Azusa Pacific University (APU), a small Christian college with a stellar track and field reputation. Clay could finally devote himself to the decathlon, a 10-event bonanza consisting of the 100-metre dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 110-metre hurdles, discus,

“perspective of radical change.” Hardship returned, however, when the couple’s six-month-old son suddenly passed on in 2004. Instead of becoming bitter, Williams turned to God. “Losing our son Caedmen, it was horrible. The emotions that you feel, the anguish, but God’s grace and His peace that goes beyond all understanding is there. “I used to read that in my Bible, the ‘peace that surpasses all understanding.’ I never really got it until the day that my son died. And I feel it on the days that I struggle and miss my son. I feel God just wrapping His arms around me, and it’s something I can’t imagine living my life without.” Now married 16 years and with two children, Williams’ strength and character are evident in the songs she writes – stemming from her relationship with God and living by His grace. “Reach out to Jesus. He loves you. It doesn’t mean that all of your problems are going to just magically disappear … it does mean that Jesus is never going to leave your side,” she says. “You may feel like you’re at the end of your rope and you just can’t hold on, but God doesn’t want us to just hold on – He wants to hold us. You don’t have to do it in your own strength. Cry out to God. There is such power in doing that.” For more info, visit heatherwilliamsmusic.com. USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship (others in 2005 and 2008) as well as the silver medal at the Athens Olympics. He also won the 2005 World Outdoor, 2008 World Indoor, and 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials titles. Then, as billions watched, Clay won the 2008 Olympic decathlon gold medal by 240 points – the largest margin since 1972. He was officially “The World’s Greatest Athlete.” Today, Clay lives in Glendora, Calif., where he still trains at APU. He and Sarah have one son (Jacob, age 7) and two daughters (Katherine, 5, and Elizabeth, 2). And as the 2012 London Olympics approach, Clay wants to do something no other decathlete has done: win a third medal. Does that pressure overwhelm Clay? Hardly. “I’ve already done more than 90 percent of decathletes in Olympic history. So when you’ve got that perspective, it changes everything,” he says. “I expect myself to do well. But is this going to define me? No. [Not medaling] isn’t going to take away what I’ve already accomplished.” Those accomplishments occur off the track, too. In 2005, he started the Bryan Clay Foundation to provide physical, financial, emotional, and spiritual support to kids through sports. He hopes to point those “with no vision, no hope” toward a God who can give both. “From the very beginning, Christ used track and field to teach me about Him and lessons like character, sacrifice, love, integrity, and commitment,” Clay says. “People ask me, ‘How did you do all this?’ Just look at the faithfulness God has shown in my life. That’s how. “I think that’s what my faith and the Olympics are all about – going and being the best you can be. I think God honours that.”

Newsbriefs From Combine To Country Music Charts CAMROSE, AB — Country music trio High Valley is riding high on accolades. Earlier this year, the group was nominated for Juno Awards’ Best Country Album of the Year and SiriusXM Award’s Country Artist of the Year. Their latest single “Have I Told You I Love You Lately” reached Mediabase Canadian Country Chart’s Top 10, while their latest album Love Is A Long Road was No. 1 on Canada’s iTunes Country Chart days after release. To top it all off, they’re playing main stage this August at the 22nd annual Big Valley Jamboree, one of North America’s biggest country music festivals. Raised in the rural town of La Crete, AB, Brad, Curtis, and Bryan Rempel have remained true to their faith and family in the midst of success. Asked if

they’d go after more success if it meant stripping away the identification with faith and family, Brad told the Edmonton Journal, “No, it wouldn’t work ... I don’t think we will be changing any of the ingredients in the recipe that we have, thanks.” On their label’s website, Curtis explained, “We want to use our gifts that (God’s) given to us to honour Him and to expand the Kingdom and just to sing to people who need to hear the message.” Brad added, “Our goal has always been to show the light of Jesus Christ to the world. We want to offer a positive, faith-based version of the new country sound. That’s why we play a lot of mainstream festivals, sharing stages with Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and Brad Paisley.”

‘The Voice’ Winner Speaks Out For God NEW YORK, NY — After beating out opponent Juliet Simms at The Voice’s season finale, a teary-eyed Jermaine Paul thanked his family and exclaimed “God bless y’all man! Nobody but Jesus, man! Nobody!” Paul won by a four percent margin, earning him a recording contract with Universal Republic Records and a cash prize of $100,000. “I feel blessed. God is good,” said Paul, who sang R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly” at the end of the show. Prior to competing in The Voice – NBC’s counterpart to American Idol – Paul has recorded backup vocals for wellknown artists like R&B powerhouse Mary J. Blige and rapper

Kanye West. He also sang backup for Grammy Award-winning artist Alicia Keys. Growing up in New York’s Spring Valley, music and faith has always been a part of life for Paul. He played drums and sang at local churches and competed in talent shows. His belief in God is evident, which he’s expressed in recent tweets to his more than 70,000 followers. “There is no blessing without a battle but know that the Battle is not your (sic).” Asked what it meant, he tweeted “God will fight your battles.” The father of four is currently working on his album. His first single, a version of Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses” is available on iTunes.

Faith On The High Wire NIAGARA FALLS, ONT — Nik Wallenda is used to putting his life on the line. A seventh generation member of The Flying Wallendas, the 33-yearold has been used to walking a tightrope since he was two. But on June 16, he did something no one has ever done before – walk a tightrope suspended 190 ft over Niagara Falls. The world watched in awe as ABC broadcasted the funambulist with a balance pole crossing the gorge step by step on a two-inch wide, 1,800 ft long cable from Goat Island in New York to Table Rock in Ontario. Despite the treacherous mist and fog, Wallenda successfully reached the Canadian side in less than 30 minutes. The selfprofessed King of the Wire may have years of training to back up his daredevil stunts, but he credits one thing for his success. “Faith plays a huge role in what I do,” said

Wallenda at the post-walk press conference. During the walk, he was heard thanking God and Jesus Christ as he marveled at the view over the falls. He also prayed with his family minutes before stepping on the wire. “I believe God has opened many doors for me in my life and this is one of them,” he said. After two years of persistent negotiations with Canadian and U.S. officials, Wallenda was the first person in 100 years to be given a permit for the dangerous stunt. A born-again Christian, Wallenda prays to calm his nerves. “I pray and talk to God a lot and I find peace in that. That’s how I can remain calm when people would think I could go nuts during this whole process,” he told the Niagara Falls Review, saying his goal is to inspire people to pursue their dreams. His next stop? Crossing the Grand Canyon.

Toronto Man Beats Bullying With Kindness TORONTO, ONT — Bullying stops when somebody stands up for the victim. Toronto resident Max Sidorov did just that. Sidorov was shocked and resolved to do something after viewing an online video of an elderly bus monitor being taunted to tears. Bus monitor Karen Klein lives in New York, but distance wasn’t an issue for Sidorov. He started a campaign to get Klein “a vacation of a lifetime” on the crowd funding website Indiegogo.com. Sidorov set the fundraising goal at $5,000, but little did he know the campaign would go viral. The video received over seven million views, people contributed more than $600,000, and the police and school district were

3

immediately notified. Klein was touched by the outpouring of public support. “I’m so amazed,” she told NBC’s Today show. “I’ve got these nice letters, emails, Facebook messages. There’s a whole world out there that I didn’t know. It’s really awesome.” And despite the trouble she received, Klein doesn’t want the Grade 7 boys to face criminal charges. Parents said they will give the boys their due punishment. Sidorov, a Ukraine immigrant who was also bullied as a child, hopes people will learn something from this. “I think we can do something positive and spread light on this issue of bullying around the world,” he told the Canadian Press.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Known as the “graveyard of champions,” the Olympic Club is where veteran golfers have lost to the underdog. Following this trend, rising PGA star Webb Simpson beat Major winners Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell at the 2012 U.S. Open. The Wake Forest religion major relied on God to get him his first Majors victory. “I probably prayed more in the last three holes than I ever did in my life,” he said. So when he clinched the title with a 1-over-par 281, he was quick to give credit where it was due. “I’d be stupid not to thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ because it was tough out there and I was nervous, and I felt His presence all day,” he told CBN. Simpson’s faith

Athlete Overcomes Life’s Hurdles EDMONTON, AB — This mom isn’t slowing down. Track-and-field star Priscilla Lopes - Schliep recently celebrated her first gold medal as a mother. Last month, the 29-year-old won the title at the 100 m hurdles at the Donovan Bailey Invitational. This is a huge boost to the Whitby, Ont. native who’s vying for a spot in the 2012 Olympics. “Just a few things to sharpen up before nationals and, hopefully, get ready for London,” she told the Edmonton Journal. To be in perfect form less than a year after giving birth is remarkable but not surprising for this motivated athlete. LopesSchliep won bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics despite an injury, earning Canada the first medal in Summer Olympics since the 1996 Games, and first

isn’t dependent on wins on the green. Simpson caught people’s attention after calling a penalty on himself at the 2011 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, losing his chance at winning his first PGA Tour title. “Our deposit of the Holy Spirit living inside of us, more than anything, has allowed me to make those tough decisions,” he told Beliefnet. The 26-year-old shrugged off the accolades for his integrity, saying it’s part of his conviction as a Christian. “But looking back, it’s been so cool because I’ve seen how God has used it to affect other people. I heard from a lot of people who were watching with their kids and they were able to teach their kids a cool lesson in that moment. I thought that was pretty neat.”

Viewpoints "There's war, disease, poverty, and violent crime all over the world...and your greatest concern is me not eating peas!"

The Day Pee Wee Stood Tall by Dave Burchett

“We need a lot more Pee Wee Reeses.” “When I finally got up to Brooklyn, I went to Pee Wee and said, ‘Black people love you. When you touched Jackie, you touched all of us.’ With Pee Wee, it was No. 1 on his uniform and No. 1 in our hearts.” Robinson later wrote this sentiment to Reese in a book inscription. “Pee Wee whether you are willing to admit what you being just a great guy meant (a great deal) to my career, I want you to know how much I feel it meant. May I take this opportunity to say a great big thanks and I sincerely hope all things you want in life be yours.” We need a lot more Pee Wee Reeses. We need men and women who are willing to step up for others when it may not be the best action for personal gain. The apostle Paul offered some good advice in the Bible: “Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived. “Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life” (Galatians 6). I want to be willing to stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. As I think on the gift of grace and redemption through the Cross, how I can do anything else? Dave Burchett is an Emmy Award winning television sports director, author, and Christian speaker. Read his blog "Confessions of a Bad Christian" at www.daveburchett.com.

Jackie Robinson made his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. You can argue the American civil rights movement was ignited when Robinson came to bat in Dodger Blue. The journey for Robinson was difficult at best and nearly impossible at worst. Many Dodgers players s Dave Burchett threatened to walk if forced to play with a black player. That ended when Dodger management informed dissenters that they could keep walking to the unemployment line. Can you imagine the pain Robinson felt to have his teammates reject him for only one reason? But one teammate reacted in a way that I wish all serious and thoughtful Christians would emulate. Team captain Pee Wee Reese was an unlikely ally for Robinson. He was born in segregated Louisville, KY, and the odds were that Reese would be a part of the boycott against a black player. But the diminutive Reese proved to be a giant of a man one day in Cincinnati. During infield practice, the Redlegs were screaming at Jackie with all of the usual hateful epithets. Then the venom was distributed to Reese. They were yelling things like “How can you play with this (epithet)?” as Robinson stood uncomfortably at first base. Reese went over to him, put his arm around him and smiled. A silence fell over the Reds dugout. As fans witnessed this amazing act of grace, Robinson smiled back. At Reese’s funeral, Joe Black, another Major League Baseball black pioneer, said: “Pee Wee helped make my boyhood dream come true to play in the Majors, the World Series. When Pee Wee reached out to Jackie, all of us in the Negro League smiled and said it was the first time that a white guy had accepted us.

Adopting Paul by Phil Callaway When I was a kid, smoking was good for you. “More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarettes,” boasted a popular ad. Cigarettes were the oat bran of the ’60s. They sold them in health food stores, I think. My son’s friend Paul smiles when I tell him this. When his parents moved away, Paul stayed in town to live with his older brother. We love this guy, but he has a disgusting habit. It’s not as damaging as gossip or slander or disobedience, but he likes to cram things in his mouth and light them on fire. I’ve told him he is welcome to smoke inside our house the day I am free to discharge firearms in his. So he goes on long walks instead. Smoking took up Paul when he was very young. Older kids thought it was cute to buy them for him years ago, and now he finds himself inhaling 30 a day. He longs to quit, longs to pitch them in the furnace and run. But the habit is stickier than that. And so I pray for him, of course. And say things like, “Smokers are modern-day lepers. They huddle together in tiny colonies outside buildings

s Phil Callaway shivering in the cold like survivors of a nuclear meltdown. What part of this appeals to you?” “You are inhaling carbon monoxide and cyanide and burning up $5,600 a year.” “Have you ever seen an ad that

family’s coming with me and I want you to join us.” He almost popped two blood vessels in his forehead. “I’ve never been south of Saskatoon,” he exclaimed. “There’s one condition,” I cautioned. “You have to quit.” “Woah!” he said. “I’ll go for a walk and think about it.” On a Wednesday in September, Paul took his last drag. Within hours he wanted to die. He wanted to smoke anything he could get in his mouth. French fries. Cucumbers. But two weeks later he was feeling great. He was happier and nicer to be around. On a Tuesday in December, Paul took his last last puff. Two months later we winged our way to Florida, where he swam in the Atlantic and roasted his white Canadian skin. Paul told complete strangers his story. In restaurants, in airplanes, in airports. He told them he feels better, he’s saving money, that God’s grace is amazing. The night before we returned to the cold Paul told me that he’s through smoking. I wanted the story to end there, all tidy and impressive. But life is seldom Disney-esque. This week we’ve had setbacks and victories. So we celebrate when we can and show grace when we can’t. I remind myself that God’s love doesn’t depend on my lack of failure, but on His unfailing love. And I remind Paul of my mother’s words spoken when she caught me puffing on my very last cigarette. “Smoking won’t send you to hell, son. It’ll just make you smell like you’ve been there.” Phil Callaway is the author of ‘To Be Perfectly Honest: One Man’s Year of Living Almost Truthfully Could Change Your Life.’ Visit him at www.laughagain.org.

Taking A Leap Of Faith

s Marcia Laycock by Marcia Laycock “Close your eyes and hold out your hand.” My friend Neils grinned at me from the other side of the counter as he spoke. Knowing he was sometimes inclined toward practical jokes, I hesitated. He said it again, and when I still didn’t respond, “Come on. Just do it.” I warned him if he put anything disgusting in my hand I’d never speak to him again. Then, with a little uncertainty, I did as he asked. Immediately I felt something cool and heavy. In fact, it was so heavy my hand dropped to the counter. I opened my eyes. The object I held took my breath away. It was a solid gold nugget, about 15 centimetres long and eight centimetres wide. Neils and his partner had

found it in their sluice box on their morning claim that morning. They calculated it was worth somewhere around $30,000. Sometimes God asks us to close our eyes and hold out our hands. He asks us to trust Him. Most of us, especially those of us who have been through some rough times in our lives, hesitate. We’re not quite sure we should trust God. We’ve been disappointed a lot in our lifetime and we don’t want to set our lives up for more. So we don’t obey. We hold back. But God doesn’t give up easily. He comes to us again, and says, “Come on. Just do it.” The instruction He gives

The Beat Goes On ent city, a different country. Whatever the circumstance, although the task may look risky or even terrifying, you can be assured God has good things in store as long as you lean on Him. Like my friend Neils, God wants to delight you. He wants to bless you, to fill you with His confidence and His strength. Unlike my friend Neils, He will never take those good things away. (No, I didn’t get to keep the gold nugget!) When God asks you to take a step of faith, He will always give you what is needed to accomplish it, and His gifts are for keeps. The journey may not always take you over smooth ground, but the joy as you go will be worth it. And more. He’ll be right there with you. That was His promise to His followers as He gave them final instructions in the Bible before leaving them. He said, “And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Is God asking you to take a leap of faith? Trust Him. Come on. Just do it.

s Rhonda Rhea by Rhonda Rhea My son is quite the musician. He’s a guitarist, a trombonist, and a drummer. A drummer … who doesn’t necessarily need a drum. He has a drum set, but his drumming is by no means contained to it. The table is his drum. The sofa is his drum. The wall? Drum. The desk, the chair, his sister? Drum, drum, drum. He was baking cookies with me the other week and even the cookie sheet was a drum. Okay, actually that was more of a cymbal – but there was still definite drummage. Daniel drums without even knowing he’s drumming. It’s the percussion that never ends. The other day I just couldn’t stand it any more. My left eye was twitching – on the beat. I said, “Daniel! Could you please stop percussing for five minutes?” “Sure,” he said without missing a beat (as it were).

Then he looked at his watch. I wonder how many things I do without thinking. No doubt I have over a gajillion annoying habits I’m not aware of that are causing eyes to twitch left and right. I’m praying the Lord would grow me to the place where there are way more things I do without thinking that bless those around me than things I do without thinking that annoy. In 1 Corinthians 12:31 of the Bible, Paul says, “But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.” Then he begins what we call the “love chapter.” Love should be a way of life. Loving others selflessly should happen as

No doubt I have over a gajillion annoying habits that are causing eyes to twitch left and right. naturally and rhythmically as those tap, tap, taps being drummed on the edge of the desk – loving almost without having to think about it. Verses 4-7 in 1 Corinthians 13 tell us what that kind of love looks like. “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand

its own way. It is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” How important is our sacrificial love for others to God? We’re told in the Bible’s 1 Corinthians 13:1 that we could speak every language on earth – we could even speak the language of the angels. But if we don’t love others, even Angel-ese sounds like a bunch of annoying noise. As a matter of fact, it says that without love, even if I’m speaking the sweetest language there is, “I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” The last thing I want to do is cause a twitch in the eye of the God I love. I want to love others because I do love Him. And I want to love consistently, steadily – without missing a beat. Rhonda Rhea is a radio personality and conference speaker across North America. Willing To Wait by Dr. Charles F. Stanley

F

rom mundane to profound moments – waiting on traffic lights and elevators to the end of suffering or the fulfillment of dreams – life gives us no choice but to wait. Yet patience seems rare. How often do we complain when something doesn’t happen on our schedule, or when something prevents us moving forward? Patience is a characteristic we s Dr. Charles F. Stanley should cultivate. No one is born with it – just look at a newborn baby! Rather, the Bible tells us patience is a spiritual fruit, developed over time (Galatians 5:22-23). Without it, we’ll never become who God desires us to be.

Essential for life Delays. God wants us to respond with calm acceptance to waiting, while trusting Him. Though delays seem senseless, God uses these times to mature us. One lesson a child learns is how to wait. Our displays of irritation are just adult versions of childish tantrums. Whenever you feel impatient, choose a mature response instead of acting like a spiritual toddler. Desires. The ability to postpone gratification is important. God wants us to follow Biblical principles for living and align our desires with His. The next time you’re tempted to go for immediate gratification, ask God what He wants for you. Then wait until He gives direction. Relationships. One of the words the Bible uses to describe patience is longsuffering, and sometimes that’s what it takes when dealing with others. There’s a description of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and it begins like this: “Love is patient.” Whenever you’re tempted to respond with irritation, remember how God has patiently loved you. Hardships. Most unwanted delays are trivial, but sometimes they involve significant events. What happens when a medical condition isn’t improving, a relationship remains strained, or unemployment continues?

One sign of spiritual maturity is the ability to calmly abide under stress. This doesn’t mean we feel less pressure, but we know God is working for our good. It’s not hopeless resignation, but faith in God’s purpose. Prayer. God rarely works according to our timetable. In desperation, we may give deadlines and if He doesn’t come through when we expect, we take matters into our own hands. How many times do we miss God’s blessings because we refuse to wait? Whenever He delays, remember He’s faithful and will provide for us in the best way at the perfect time.

What patience looks like Perhaps the easiest way to understand patience is to see it demonstrated. The Bible tells about David, a man who learned to wait. When he was young, God chose him to be the next king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:13). But when King Saul became jealous and tried to kill him (1 Samuel 19:10), David was forced to become a fugitive. During this time, David encountered two opportunities to take matters into his own hands. Saul and his army followed a lead to find David. At one point, Saul

God’s faithful and will provide for us in the best way at the perfect time. entered a cave, not realizing David and his men were hiding there. This seemed the perfect occasion for David to kill Saul. His men thought it was God’s way of bringing David to the throne. He sneaked up to Saul, but cut off the edge of his robe, later explaining he couldn’t kill God’s anointed king. When Saul left, David called out and displayed the robe’s edge as evidence he was loyal (1 Samuel 24:1-22). Another occasion is in 1 Samuel 26:1-25. David and one of his men entered Saul’s camp as everyone slept. Instead of killing Saul, David took his spear and water jug. After leaving, David called to the commander of Saul’s army, showed what he’d taken, and reprimanded him for not adequately guarding his king. David patiently waited through unfair treatment. What enabled him to respond this way? Faith. David knew God would give him the kingdom. If God instantly provided us with everything, there would be no reason to

have faith. When His timing doesn’t match our expectations, we have a choice: will we rely on ourselves, or wait for Him? David chose to trust God. He may not have understood why he had to wait, but knew God would fulfill His promise. Wisdom. When a way out appeared, David’s men saw it as a sign from God. But David looked beyond the circumstance. He discerned their advice didn’t align with God’s will. How could he take a life to further his own? When we look at situations from a Biblical perspective, wisdom keeps us from foolish choices. Courage. Waiting for God’s timing takes courage, especially when it affects others. When David decided to wait, his men suffered too. They would have to continue hiding. They were tired of being outlaws. But instead of a quick fix, David had the courage to stand for God’s way, protecting his men from a tragic mistake. Perseverance. David was willing to endure persecution. Knowing God was in control – and working according to His purpose – the future king chose to stay in a hard situation instead of taking the easy way out. Taking shortcuts to escape prolonged difficulty is never the answer. The only way to receive the benefits God has for us is to trust Him through delay. Forbearance. A surprising example of patience was David’s restraint toward Saul. He didn’t take revenge, but instead approached him with respect. Maybe you have a “Saul” in your life causing difficulty. Ask God to give you a forbearing spirit like David’s so you can see the person’s value and treat him or her with honour. The benefits of patience are numerous. It enriches your relationships, transforms your character, brings peace in trying situations, and equips you to effectively serve God. David couldn’t see all God was doing during his wait, but be sure of this: David wouldn’t be remembered as the renowned king of Israel if he’d taken the fast route to the throne. Trust God when He puts you in the waiting room. He knows what He’s doing. Dr. Charles F. At first, she admits it was strange to go to church because, “the other kids knew all the answers to questions and would sing.” “I had my own questions like, ‘Who is Jesus? What does it mean to have a relationship with Him? Why are these people like this? Why do they care about me?” says Pagnotta. “It takes a while to understand what is really being said. But

eventually, I started understanding.” The church youth group provided a place of security and comfort for Pagnotta. She became best friends with several of them and started reading a Bible given to her by her grandmother. While her non-churchgoing friends thought nothing of backstabbing, drinking, and partying, Pagnotta resolved to be different. “I realized that, ‘No, that’s not what God wants for me.’ ” Pagnotta invited Jesus Christ into her life in Grade 8. The program is also taking registration for Promise Preschool, a new addition that will be offered in September. “There are so many young families in the area and we want to offer them something while they’re here – whether that’s Promise Preschool, coffee time, or an exercise class so we can minister to the whole family and not just the child,” says Carolyn Adams, executive director for McLeod Community Out Of School Care. “We provide consistent, quality care and we hope the children feel safe and loved here.” “Sometimes, it’s not just about sharing the gospel, it’s about meeting the community’s needs,” says Monica Manning, the church’s community outreach pastor. “It’s about going out and reaching people in creative ways, because not everyone is going to come into a church building.” Steele Heights Baptist tries to meet the needs of the diverse community through services such as English lessons for new immigrants, special dinners, and a drop-in service for youth. “When you show Christ’s love to people, relationships develop and it opens their hearts. We’re grateful that God is working through us and that we can learn and grow with the community.”

Now in its fifth year, the program serves 38 elementary school children from kindergarten to sixth grade. “Some of the kids who

Going to church can be unnerving for newcomers, especially for those who don’t know what to expect. Sabrina Pagnotta, 21, laughs as she recounts her experience of stepping into Steele Heights Baptist Church in northwest Edmonton as a petrified 12year-old. “My sister and I were too scared to join the other kids in Sunday School because the neighbour who brought us was in a different class,” says Pagnotta, referring to the children’s program that took place at the same time as the church service. “So we would sit in the [adult] service, take the hymn books, cover the pages, and try to guess what number we were on. “We did our own thing and when the service was over, we could hang out with our friends.” Pagnotta and her family

Beauty for Ashes

On May 15, 2011 fire devastated Slave Lake, AB, leaving a once bustling town in ashes. Stan and Bonnie Morten were among the 7,000 people evacuated. “I was baking bread,” Bonnie Morten says. “Then suddenly the house filled with smoke.” They threw a few belongings into a suitcase and fled the house. “I locked the door when I left,” recalls Stan. “We had no idea this was the last time we’d see our house.” They returned weeks later, their home among the 400 buildings destroyed by the fire. “We already knew the house was gone,” Stan says. “The TV crews were broadcasting from our front lawn.” At the same time, Marilyn Kaz, owner of Kensington Master Builders in Sherwood Park, was living through a kind of devastation of her own. The housing market had burst, the economy flattened. “We were broke. I’d had to lay off nearly my entire staff.” Kaz watched the events in Slave Lake unfold on TV. “We have friends in Smith (a nearby town), and when we called to see how they were, our friend said, ‘You need to come here. You need to see what you can do to help.’ ” They drove to Slave Lake. Kaz thought, “What can I do to help? I’m broke!” She was deeply moved upon seeing the scope of what had been lost. “The photos and video were nothing compared to the reality. Homes hadn’t just been burned, they had been erased. Not even a skeleton standing.” “The first thing I had to do,” Kaz says, “was pray.” Kaz grew up going to church, reading and memorizing parts of the Bible, but it wasn’t until she was a young mother that she started asking “Why am I here?” It was this questioning that led her to “search for the fellowship of God” in a deep way. “I began praying daily, talking to God.” Her sister-in-law invited her to church and Kaz “felt God’s presence” there and has been part of that church for 35 years. After praying, Kaz felt God nudging her to set up shop in Slave Lake. She parked her trailer in a church parking lot and put ads in the local paper. “Mostly, I listened to people’s stories. What had happened to them. They needed to tell their stories.” As they talked, Kaz’s sense of compassion grew. “They’ve lost everything, but they were so filled with hope, character, able to look to the future, even though no one knew what would

RISING

by Belinda Elliott

“After hearing all that stuff at RIZN, it made me realize I am valued.”

there for me.” As a child, Blackburn suffered verbal and physical abuse that left her feeling inadequate and depressed. “After hearing all that stuff at RIZN, it made me realize I am valued,” she says. It was the first time she understood God’s love for her. “At RIZN Camp 2011 is when I fully committed my life to Christ,” Blackburn recalls. “He showed me grace, and because of it I gave my life to Him. I don’t know what I’d be without Him.” Now she volunteers at RIZN and serves on the worship team. “That’s what we’re striving for,” McNaughton says, “to see kids getting plugged in and really growing in their relationship with God. I feel incredibly blessed to see what God is doing.” Both the camp and the weekly Friday night services have become quite popular. Edmonton’s Church on 99 started RIZN to create a safe, fun environment where kids ages 12-18 could learn about topics relevant to them. The youth ministry began with only about 20 kids, McNaughton says. Now average attendance reaches nearly 500 every Friday. In the midst of the fun and excitement, the teens

also learn about God – many for the first time as most of those who attend don’t regularly go to church. “We’re all about reaching teenagers who are far from God and making a difference in their lives for Jesus,” McNaughton says. “We do that by being culturally relevant without comprising any truths of the Bible.” The results have been life changing. “We’ve seen kids set free of drugs and get baptized,” he says. “They have started coming to church and are really passionate and excited for God.” Alicia Segura, 21, joined the group as a teenager. She experienced sexual abuse when she was younger, which left her struggling emotionally.

She began abusing alcohol in her teens. At RIZN she felt accepted. “They reach people where they’re at,” she says. “It’s church for the non-churched, not church for the ‘religious people.’ ” As the leaders at RIZN mentored her, she began to desire a closer relationship with God. She invited Jesus into her life as a teenager. Now she is on staff with Church on 99 and volunteers as a leader at RIZN. “I had to have my own relationship with God,” explains Segura who grew up in a Christian family, “not one that my parents had for me. It had to be my own.”

RIZN director Travis McNaughton wants to see more people, like Alicia Blackburn and Alicia Segura, learn to rise above life’s challenges at the 2012 RIZN Camp.Through music, talks and games, the event aims to foster positive changes among youth.

A crowd of teenagers gathers every Friday night in Edmonton to attend a high-energy party called RIZN. Each week features rock music by a live band, zany games, and dynamic speakers. These fun-filled nights actually serve a serious purpose – fostering positive life change in teens. Travis McNaughton, RIZN’s director, says the youth who attend are dealing with adult-sized problems. “We have a lot of kids coming with big issues ranging from being addicted to every type of drug to kids who are homeless or who are living in foster homes,” he explains. RIZN is run by a team of passionate volunteers who want to help kids with these issues. One of their key events, RIZN Camp, happens every summer. During this weeklong camping trip teens enjoy music, Bible study, and small group discussions along with plenty of fun, food, and exciting games. This year’s camp will be held Aug. 13-17 at Rundle’s Mission on Pigeon Lake. Todd Griggs, student ministry pastor at Champions Centre in Tacoma, Wash., will be the featured guest speaker. Alicia Blackburn, 18, says attending RIZN has brought her closer to God. From her first night there, the message she heard resonated with her. “(The speaker) was saying that everybody has a purpose, and God will always love you no matter what. You can never mess up so bad that God will not love you,” she recalls. “I needed that reassurance that God would always be

by Carolyn Tomlin Growing up, my parents tried to work in a summer vacation for us kids. Being a teacher, my mother realized travel is part of an education. Visiting relatives, we saved on lodging. We found exciting free attractions along the way and packed delicious home-cooked food in a cooler. Some things have changed, but this remains the same: people still need to watch travel costs and they still want to have fun. Rest and relaxation is just as important today as it was a generation ago. Use these suggestions for your next trip.

A NEW VIEW

The physical and mental values of a vacation are priceless. Can you place a price tag on rest and relaxation? What’s the price for watching a golden sunset? A mountain range covered with snow? A change of scenery is often the best medication you can take. Getting away from a daily routine, meeting new people, and visiting interesting sites changes your perception of the world and yourself.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS

Your decision to travel solo or in a group may depend on your destination and the type of transportation. Churches or community organizations may offer travel clubs. With tours usually planned a year in advance, a committee selects sites that would be appropriate for seniors. Check for tour symbols indicating levels of activity and those accommodating passengers with limited mobility. Travelling solo can be rewarding, but risks are

involved. Accidents, illness, and personal safety should be considered. Always check with your insurance company for regulations. Purchase trip insurance with international travel.

OUR WAY OR YOUR WAY?

Choosing a vacation site based on shared interests often requires a give-and-take attitude. For group travel, how do you choose where to go? Camping has become an affordable option for many senior groups. Imagine this: staying in a motor home or RV, no unpacking, or worrying about airline schedules. Preparing coffee and breakfast over an open fire pit, watching wildlife greet the day, and being serenaded by nearby songbirds. For rest and relaxation, plan a vacation in the natural world God created. Does it get better than this? Many colleges and universities offer inexpensive, non-credit courses for seniors. Room and board is often available on campuses around the world. Take that special course you’ve always wanted to pursue. Find a new hobby or develop a skill through college extension courses while exploring a new city. Retired seniors have more freedom to travel throughout the year — as opposed to a two-week annual vacation. By comparing prices and using discounts, you can afford to take mini-trips and visit places that have been on your bucket list for years.

Your bags are packed, registration has been made at your destination, and you’ve checked area attractions. Did you forget something? If you live alone, tell a trusted friend when you will return. Cancel your daily newspaper and place a hold on mail to be delivered after you return. Are there flowers to be watered while you’re away? Traveling is exciting, but plan time for rest, meditation, and quiet time. Instead of packing heavy books, think about packing

FamilyFocus

Preparing To

Family camping for n by Kim Perrone There is no time to be a babe in the woods when navigating the great outdoors with children. Invest in a solid guide to family camping such as The Down and Dirty Guide to Camping with Kids: How to Plan Memorable Family Adventures and Connect Kids to Nature by Helen Olsson (Roost). Without preparation, you’ll face situations stickier than s’morescoated cheeks.

SPOT ON

Without recommendations from friends, you would be on your own to find a camping spot that meets your needs. Enter campgroundjudge.ca. Simply use your amenities preferences for finding reviews on suitable campgrounds on this fabulous website. When choosing, think about how much “roughing it” you’re willing to do. Access to a water pump serves a family well. Are flushable toilets important? Olsson advises you to consider any chronic medical conditions such as allergies. Popular grounds closer to cities can get crowded in summer, so be sure to make reservations.

AHEAD OF THE PACK

When preparing to camp, packing involves three words: Lists! Lists! Lists! Olsson certainly advocates them and includes

ewbies!

checklists in her guide. Find lists at camping-canada. com as well. Categories should include clothing, cooking, navigation, hygiene, medical, shelter and comfort, permits (i.e. fishing), and entertainment. Know your kids! Don’t under-pack clothes for your mess magnet or snacks for teens smack in the middle of growth spurts. Seasoned campers recommend a good multitool. Reliable brands such as Swiss Army and Leatherman can get pricey, so don’t buy a unit that houses far more gadgets than you need. Keep cooking simple on your first trip … and perhaps thereafter. Meals such as pasta, eggs, pancakes, and barbecue fixings are simple, and they might be the best chance you have of avoiding picky complaints. Bring more ice than you think you’ll need, too. Keep it in solid blocks to stave off melting, or bring dry ice.

SAFETY FIRST

Get familiar with camping safety. While toting a comprehensive medical kit is a no-brainer, SafeFamilyCamping.com talks about less obvious safeguards in helpful posts. Check the weather before leaving home. You may want to postpone the trip in the event of rain. Still, since nothing is certain with meteorology, bring along waterproof matches, plus a radio with extra batteries for that sunny weekend. Be a model camper: never cook inside a tent. Seal all food containers, perhaps storing them in your car at night. (Read: forest furries don’t pick locks.)

For sanity’s sake, test gear for the first time at home. Oh, and make sure you can build a proper campfire!

NATURALLY FUN

Prep uncertain children with books such as Camp Out!: The Ultimate Kids’ Guide by Lynn Brunelle (Workman Publishing). They’ll discover new activities for fun in the wild. In her book, Olsson likens camping to “nature therapy.” She says, “Camping is the perfect opportunity to increase children’s physical activity while limiting their screen time. It’s a healthy gift to little bodies.” So hike, explore, and climb! Encourage art with natural discoveries. Make stick and stone sculptures. Bring string for creating natural jewelry made of bark, leaves, acorns, etc. Use paper, crayons, and glue for collages using grass, leaves, or twigs. Decorate a walking stick. Take photos for use in a scrapbook you make at home. Explore the night sky. If you don’t know your stars from your planets (hint: planets shine steady), perhaps invest in a Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium that identifies whichever celestial body you aim it at. If the kids are fascinated with astronomy, the price tag might be worth it. A little planning goes a long way in the wilderness, and your family can work together to make the trip a success. Chances are your first camping experience as a family might determine whether you ever try such a venture again, so make it an adventure to remember.

A Room with a

(New) view!

Clever ways to decorate a child’s bedroom

by Kim Perrone If your elementary school child still sports ducks on his bedroom walls or your teen falls asleep beneath a Disney Princess motif, it might be time to play interior decorator!

PROJECT FUN

Summer break is perfect for planning a bedroom renovation properly. With your child, list aspects of her room that cry out for change. Develop a budget. Choose colours or a theme. How much of the current décor is expendable? Which toys or displays are outliving their use? Prioritize your child’s décor preferences before your own – within reason, of course. A child or teen’s creative mind might spawn a vision that would never occur to you. For inspiration, try Playful Home: Creative Style Ideas for Living with Kids by Andrew Weaving (Rizzoli). As well, an Internet image search for “kids’ bedrooms” will yield everything from the most sensible styles to the wildly unique.

SET THE SCENE

Walls painted with subtle hues showcase displays and furniture. Bright colours and accent walls provide impact. Wild, unique paint jobs become the focal point of the room. Painted murals are stunning. If you have the patience and skill to try one yourself, check out wallmurals123. com, a guide to various looks and techniques. Too complex? An easier way to bring walls to life requires good quality painter’s tape: using the tape to mask off areas, make plain walls burst with patterns. Think blocks of colour, stripes, borders for picture frames, or shapes you can frame out with the tape

such as stars, letters, or numbers. Use stencils to make wall patterns or a border running around the room. Stencilease.com has a large selection of free stencils to print onto card stock. Your local craft store may offer unique designs as well. Don’t forget chalkboard or dry-erase board paint. These can run pricey, but if your child is artsy, a squared off panel of either might be worth the money.

HEADED FOR SUCCESS

Dress up the most important element in a bedroom with a unique headboard secured to the wall behind the bed. Strip and paint an old door, and turn it on its side. Try a trio of window shutters. Layer plywood with a sheet of foam rubber, then fabric. Use a large painted canvas. Paint a slab of fencing – picket or otherwise. Even easier, paint a whimsical headboard straight onto the wall. Bed posts, sunsets, or castle turret, anyone?

HANDYWORK

Get crafty with your kid! Hook-rugs can become pillows or hang on walls. Run string across the room for hanging artwork, scrapbook pages, or the letters of your child’s name. Frames and photo mattes painted or embellished with small items such as shells, buttons, etc., can reflect themes. Collages set in poster frames work nicely in teen rooms. Need curtains? Choose a distinctive fabric and make this the time to learn or teach sewing

skills. Perhaps dinosaurs framing your preschooler’s window? Room sprucing becomes fun and frugal when you and your child tinker and tweak using imagination and elbow grease. Plus, redecorating over the summer is an art project that provides results you can enjoy all year long!

IT’S YOUR THING

There are many ways to make your child’s hobby, sport, favourite character, or talent obvious to someone who steps into their room. Model airplanes, Legos, trophies, treasures, and photos provide unique touches if displayed attractively. Clear acrylic shelves, cubes, or boxes that act as shelves serve up accessories stylishly. Oh, and that “character of the month” from your child’s favourite television show? Cut it out from used Mylar balloons. Glue the image on a background secured into a poster frame! Switch out as needed. Have you ventured onto Etsy.com? You’ll find vast arrays of handmade, original accents for sale. Think light switch plates, throw pillows, wall plaques, drawer pulls, shelves, and decorative wall transfers.

Wellness

SpiceyourUphealth!

by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD

How many bottles are in your spice rack? Most of us stock dozens, but use only a handful of them. Those little shakers stacked in your pantry may help fight cancer, lower blood sugar, or deter inflammation. In fact, your herb-and-spice stash is a savoury smorgasbord of antioxidant-packed powders and particles. Like many traditional medicines, spices come from plants, so they contain natural substances which bring healing to our bodies. On top of the array of unique and tantalizing flavours they bring to our tables, using spices instead of salt has an added bonus — slashing your sodium intake. Sample a few spices and their potential health benefits.

touch of turmeric

Cinnamon may help lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, when used in addition to regular treatment. Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants, scoring the highest rating of all spices. A teaspoon of cinnamon has more antioxidants than the go-to half a cup of blueberries.

Turmeric (also known as curry) contains curcumin, a yellow-orange powder that gives Indian food its distinct flavour and colour. Turmeric’s potential anti-cancer effects make it the rock star of spices. Increasing evidence suggests curcumin can slow tumour growth in some types of cancer such as breast, prostate, and colorectal. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties, too, and is used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine to treat arthritis and joint inflammation. Other lab studies show curcumin might help with lung problems, eczema, and wound healing as well as upset stomach and other digestive ailments. Be careful though — that beautiful golden turmeric can stain your kitchen towels.

spoon on the cinnamon

Ginger is commonly used to treat nausea from motion, pregnancy, chemotherapy, and surgery. Ginger’s tummy-taming effect is why sipping ginger ale helps calm an upset stomach. Strangely enough, a compound in ginger called gingerol soothes the gastrointestinal tract, yet produces the zesty, pepper-like flavour. Some evidence suggests ginger’s antiinflammatory effects may alleviate the pain and

swelling of both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. The pungent root even boosts the immune system. To brew a healing ginger tea, pour boiling water over several quarter-inch slices of peeled fresh ginger. Stir in honey until it dissolves, add ice, and enjoy a refreshing drink with zing!

Glenn’s DRIVING SCHOOL

Garlic may protect against cancer, too. Evidence shows a lower risk of some types of cancer, including stomach and colon, in places where people eat more garlic. When taken as a supplement, it can lower blood cholesterol and help prevent blood clots. A compound in garlic called allicin is responsible for its health benefits. Be sure to crush or chop the garlic clove to activate the allicin.

a dash of caution

Some spices can interfere with prescription medications. For example, since garlic and ginger both act as blood thinners, people already taking bloodthinning medications must never increase their consumption of these seasonings or take garlic or ginger supplements without a doctor’s supervision. Always consult your doctor before taking spices in supplement form.

mix it up

Scientists think many spices work side-by-side to fight carcinogens. According to recent studies, mixing certain spice combinations into ground meat decreases the amount of harmful compounds formed during cooking. The spices studied included turmeric, garlic powder, rosemary, oregano, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cumin, paprika, and pepper. Spices working together gives a whole new meaning to the term “spice blend!” Most herbs and spices will last up to a year if stored properly — in sealed containers away from heat, light and moisture. To learn which spices go with what type of foods, check labels for serving suggestions or search for spice and food combination ideas online. Ready to overhaul your spice cabinet? Throw out the seasoning salt, then stock up on a variety of herbs and spices. Put on your chef hat and see how many different kinds you can spoon and sprinkle into your recipes this week. Enjoy spicing things up! Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD is a registered dietician who writes about food, health, and nutrition. Bob Moore put people before profits with the future of Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods

the t s Grain n i a g A by Melanie F. Gibbs It’s the feel-good story of the recession: successful business owner gives company to employees. Certainly the account of Bob Moore — who celebrated his 81st birthday by announcing the stock ownership plan that would put his $100 million Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods in the hands of its employees — is the antithesis of tales of corporate greed. Established in 1978, Bob’s Red Mill offers a line of more than 400 all natural, organic, and gluten-free flours, cereals, meals, and mixes for pancakes, breads, and soups. Notably, the whole grains are ground with quartz millstones which come from several historic mills. Today, Bob’s Red Mill products can be found in 71 countries, including most grocery stores in North America. The company’s increase in sales maintained between 20 percent and 30 percent each year over the past 10 years. Within the past three years the company grew from 148 to 250 employees. Although Moore had many offers to buy the Portland, Ore.-based company, he didn’t want to sell but wasn’t sure what to do with it. After years of investigating employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), he and his partners decided, “Why not turn it over to the employees? It gives the employees stability in their own life,” Moore says. “And if the people who own it can’t keep it working, then who can?” Moore points out more than 10,000 U.S. companies participate in ESOPs, which are sanctioned by that country’s Internal Revenue Service. Media interest when the ESOP was announced in February 2010 inspired a new book. People Before Profit: The Inspiring Story Of The Founder Of Bob’s Red Mill, recently released, tells Moore’s tale. Moore didn’t set out to create this natural food empire; he began his career in California automotive repair centres. That’s where he met his wife, Charlee, who has been his staunch supporter

through 60 years of ups and downs. In fact, she was the one who introduced natural grains into the family’s diet. In the early 1960s, after a failed gas station ownership stint, the couple was living with their three sons on a dairy goat farm in Sacramento, Calif. “Charlee got pretty serious about our health,” Moore recalls. “There were just two health food stores in the area; this wasn’t very common in the culture of the time.” Charlee began baking bread with wheat flour. “We became subject to a good whole grain diet during that time. It is bound to impress you.” A few years later, offered the opportunity of his own auto centre, Moore moved his family to Redding, Calif. He then read the story of a fellow who inherited a mill in Bedford, New Hampshire, and made a success of it. “When I finished reading, with my background, things just went together in my head,” Moore relates. “I thought I could do the same thing.” Formulating a plan over a 10-year window, in 1974 Moore opened his first milling business in Redding with

walk around the neighbourhood. During one of these walks he happened by a mill that had been vacant for 20 years. Intent on refurbishing that old mill, he started running it part time. Before long he found people to work with him. After 10 years of running that mill, it burned in a devastating arson fire. Although many 60-year-olds may have given up at that point, Moore realized the impact closing would have on his 17 employees and determined to rebuild. “We did lots of praying and determined we would do everything possible to survive this,” Moore shares. He found a 50,000 sq. ft. facility about three miles away that had just been vacated. “The bankers were wonderful with us. Our insurance company paid off enough. We started over and didn’t have too much of a glitch in distribution. “I felt this was what the Lord wanted me to do,” Moore continues. “I feel a strong sense of providence in my life and this business.” Raised in a Christian family, Moore recalls being “surrounded with awareness of Christ, but didn’t rally to it. It didn’t motivate me.” He recognized his wife as a Christian, and says, “I lived by Christian principles but didn’t have a spiritual awareness at all.” Several encounters with Christians, including a radio preacher and a man towing his mobile home, started Moore thinking about his faith. “Total acceptance of the Lord happened in Sacramento,” he shares, recalling his baptism in the Sacramento River that became the emotional high point of his life. “Thank goodness for forgiveness and that the Lord died for our sins,” Moore declares. Now 83, Moore shows no signs of slowing down. “I work every day. I have a good energy level. Maybe it’s the whole grains. I’ll have to ask the Lord that one day.”

several millstones. Those stones were and continue to be an important facet of his business. Stone mills are much slower than rollers, Moore explains, and they act as a heat sink. The grain going in is room temperature, and the flour coming out is room temperature, which helps keep it from spoiling. “If you crank up machinery for high speed production, then begins oxidation and rancidity. Grinding cool in stone, at smaller quantities, gives a product that’s healthy.” Eventually, Moore divested and his two oldest sons took over the Redding mill. Drawn by a seminary that would allow a 50-year-old to audit courses, the couple moved to Portland, where Moore enrolled in Western Evangelical Seminary. “My ultimate desire in life was to read Scriptures in their original language,” he confesses. As he studied, Moore would

ultimate RESCUE effort

The

The front page of the National Post recently profiled three well-documented rescue efforts. Two were praised for their ingenuity and heroism: the Chilean mine disaster of 2010 and the 9/11 rescue in 2001. The third involved outcry and frustration: the recent search of a collapsed mall in Elliot Lake, Ont. After a section of the roof collapsed, sending metal and concrete crashing down through two floors on June 23, rescue efforts began for the people trapped in the rubble. The surprise news on the evening

“Your Hometown GM Dealer”

www.oldsgm.com

of June 25, however, caused outrage. Only hours after reports of tapping from within the wreckage, rescue efforts were suspended due to concerns the building was structurally unsafe to search. The effort resumed on June 26, but the time in between seemed endless for locals waiting for news of loved ones. Did you know there’s a rescue effort that has never ceased? It’s been in progress for over 2,000 years! The Bible explains that the living God, Creator of all things, is heading it up. Out of love, He chose to undertake the greatest rescue mission ever by sending His Son, Jesus, to earth to save all people from the consequences of their sins. You may not be aware there are any consequences or that you need rescuing from anything – life seems to be pretty rosy. However, according to the Bible, sin has put everyone in a very needful position. Romans 3:23 says “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Sin separates man from a holy God, in this life and the one

to come. Thankfully, Jesus Christ came to offer the ultimate lifeline. Never having sinned, He rescued mankind from the wrath of God by sacrificing Himself on the cross. He died to save everyone, providing the opportunity to spend eternity with Him in Heaven (John 3:16-17). He’s stretching out His hand right now – will you grab it? First you have to humble yourself and admit you need someone to save you. Next, put your trust in Jesus as your Saviour. Lastly, invite Him into your life and begin a new eternal relationship with Him. Ready to be rescued? Pray this prayer from your heart: Dear Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God who died – but rose again – to pay the penalty for my sins. Please forgive me for the sinful things I have said and done. I accept You as my Saviour. Please come into my life and help me to live for You from this day forward. In Your Name I pray, Amen

Great Faces, Great Places

by Sarah Chestnutt

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, only 20 minutes from

Custer’s main street. The 60 ft tall faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln look out 500 ft above the forest. The Presidential Trail, a half-mile of spectacular views, is a great way to experience this definite must-see. Skip the crowds by going early morning or late afternoon. There’s no entrance fee, but parking will cost you $11, and can get

backed up during peak times. If you hang around until 9 p.m. you can watch the Evening Sculpture Lighting Ceremony, a 45- minute program ending in the mountain lit up for all to see. Neck hurting from craning up at a manmade marvel? Give it a rest and head below ground for some of nature’s finest wonders. The Black Hills Caves are rare formations underground, with some of the largest concentrations of passageways in the world. Only 10 minutes from Custer is the Jewel Cave National Monument. This pristine labyrinth is the second longest cave in the world, with over 160 miles of mapped passages. Take a guided tour to see structures like you’ve never seen before. Book in advance, waiting times at the gate can be up to an hour. Head back into the sunlight and explore the forest surrounding you. The grassy mountain meadows, towering granite peaks, deep canyons, and crystalclear lakes make breathtaking scenery

sure to have you reaching for the camera. Custer State National Park, one of the few truly wild places in the States, is home to pronghorn, elk, mountain goats, and curious burros known to poke their noses in open car windows looking for a treat. It’s also home to one of the world’s largest herds of free-roaming bison. You’ll probably have an animal encounter along the relaxing 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road, winding around the southern edge of the park, especially if you travel near sunset. Some of the most breathtaking views are seen on the Needles Highway Scenic Drive. A favourite among sightseers and motorcycle enthusiasts, this 14-mile drive is the perfect backdrop for vacation photos. There are numerous tight turns though, so it may be difficult for motor homes or large trailers. Time to stretch your legs? Check out the extensive hiking trails, go kayaking, canoeing, fishing, or any of the numerous outdoor adventures available. When all that fresh air has made you

sleepy, try out one of the sites at Custer State Park Campgrounds. There’s a variety to choose from, but can fill up fast so book online beforehand. If camping’s not your style, try out one of the cabins in the park or a modern hotel in town. With a history of cowboys and prospectors, the area is filled with memories of the Wild West. Get into the spirit of things with a guided horseback ride with Rockin R Trail Rides. Grab your boots for an afternoon ride or overnight adventure and a chuck wagon supper. Experience the excitement of the Wild West for yourself in Deadwood. The entire city is a national historic landmark so you can follow in the footsteps of famous and infamous names such as Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. Head down to South Dakota for a vacation that will immerse you in exciting history, take your breath away with stunning views and unique experiences, and make you realize the state has more to offer than you ever imagined.

The discovery of gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1874 caused a rush of miners, prospectors, and fortune seekers. Now, tourists are the ones streaming to the area – not for gold, but still for good reason. It’s called the land of infinite variety, with everything from mountains (the highest point east of the Rockies) to so many lakes the state has more shoreline than Florida. From world-class attractions to phenomenal outdoor activities, South Dakota has something for everyone. Instead of trying to cover the whole state and spending your entire vacation on the go, why not call the small city of Custer your home base and explore the Black Hills region, along the western border? You’ll have your pick for what to eat with restaurants featuring local flavour. First thing in the morning stop by Baker’s Bakery & Café, said to have the best breakfast in town (especially breakfast burritos), served until 11 a.m. Later, try Bobkat’s Purple Pie Place. You can’t miss it: it’s the big purple building on Mt. Rushmore Road. Make sure you leave room for dessert — old fashioned ice cream and bumbleberry pie make it the place to go. Why stick close to Custer? Because it means you don’t have to go far for adventure. It’s ideally located to many of the major attractions. You can’t get more major than the “world’s greatest mountain carving” —

Summer

Multi-talented Bruce Avery is on a worldwide musical mission by Crystal Kupper For 29-year-old Bryce Avary, this summer is poised to take off … well, like a rocket. As the lone face of the successful indie act The Rocket Summer, Avary recently released Life Will Write The Words, much to the joy of his 300,000plus Facebook fans. According to AltPress.com, The Rocket Summer’s fifth album features “some of [his] most concise songwriting to date and a self-confident, unfettered vibe that’s invigorating.” The Fort Worth, TX native certainly is gifted – he plays every instrument and writes and sings every word to every song on every

self-produced record. “I really wanted to push myself musically and lyrically with this album, searching to pull out the stories within and around me,” Avary tells Living Light News. “I like to write songs that are an honest reflection of what’s going on in my life and in my mind while I observe and attempt to learn more about myself and this beautiful, intense world we live in.” It’s a world Avary knows well. His tour resumé stretches across Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Scotland, and all over the U.S. and Canada, sharing the stage with big names like Switchfoot, One Republic, Third Eye Blind, and Jimmy Eat World. While flying mostly under the radar of mainstream pop, Avary has quietly amassed a loyal fan following. Named one of “100 Bands You Need to Know” by AP Magazine, The Rocket Summer has sold over 250,000 albums and 500,000 singles in the U.S. alone since Calendar Days, his debut release in 2003. Of Men and Angels, his fourth offering, even surpassed The Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D. for the Top Album spot on iTunes in February 2010. And Avary,

working this dream job since age 16, wouldn’t have it any other way. “I literally love music so much. I think maybe my music is something people relate to,” he says. “I’ve never had a super-huge moment where suddenly I was all over the radio. It’s built over time, and I believe that in itself has created a personal relationship with fans that maybe I wouldn’t have had if success came straight out of the gate.” Inspiration struck at age 12 when Avary first played a $50 pawnshop guitar his father purchased. From there, he graduated to drums, piano, bass, and whatever instrument he could get his hands on. After a stint with a punk rock band, Avary self-released his first EP at 16. He called himself The Rocket Summer after a chapter from Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles. The first 1,000 copies quickly sold out, and as Avary says, that was it. He had found his calling. “I loved the idea of creating, having something be true to my heart,” he says. “I love locking myself away and pushing myself.” And push himself he did, signing with The Militia Group and releasing Calendar Days and Hello, Good Friend while in his early 20s. From there, he joined forces with major record label Island Def Jam Records, producing Do You Feel and Of Men and Angels before leaving to start his own label, Aviate Records. Life Will Write The Words is its first project. “When I made [Life Will Write The Words], I was in the most creative place I’d ever been,” Avary says. Instead of Los Angeles or New York, recording happened in the musician’s hometown, making for a “really real” effect and “a very creative environment where I got to try out lots of new things.” Some of those new things include off-thewall “instruments” like trashcans and typewriters. Just another day at the office for the man whose voice

draws comparisons to the likes of Ben Folds, The Swift, Relient K, and Justin Timberlake. As a one-man band from the beginning, this is all Avary knows. As a teenager, it proved tough to sync schedules with bandmates, so he quickly grew used to doing everything himself. Although he currently uses several musicians for live performances, Avary relishes handling the process from beginning to end. “It’s a lot of work, no doubt,” he says, “but it’s fun.” Or, as one reviewer dubs it, “infectiously joyful.” With bubbly rhythms, upbeat lyrics, and a positive image, Avary stands out from his power pop counterparts. And like everything with The Rocket Summer, there’s a reason, this time stemming from a choice he made at age five. “I remember literally talking to Jesus, feeling His presence,” Avary recalls. “And so I came to know the Lord as a little kid.” That relationship became the driving force behind his musical choices, influencing everything from lyrics to which record label he signed with. Though he believes in and supports the need for a Christian market, Avary strongly feels called to the secular side of music, accordingly signing with non-Christian labels. “What people like Chris Tomlin do is amazing, but I think what we do is very important, too,” he says. “We all have different callings.” And for The Rocket Summer, that calling means deliberately engaging the secular culture around him with lyrics and music they can relate to. The result? Lives being changed in front of Avary’s eyes. “I really believe that God uses me through music in ways that can sometimes be the most powerful. Music is the friend that convinces you not to jump in your darkest hour,” he says. “I’ve heard so many stories about how my music has helped someone. I’ve always known that’s God working through the music. I remind people who don’t know God that that’s Him behind it all.” Along with Tara, his tour manager and wife of nearly eight years, Avary credits his relationship with Jesus as his biggest inspiration. “I feel like He’s the biggest thing in my life. I think about [my relationship with Christ] all the time,” he says. “I’m constantly talking with Him and seeking Him. It’s real life. Because of that, it naturally comes out in my music.”

Living Light News - July/August 2012 12 STONES Beneath The Scars 12stones.com Review by Josh McConnell

JukeBox

Known for their heavy metalinspired guitars and aggressive anthems, 12 Stones seemingly has a revolving door for musicians in the band over the past 12 years. With a new bass player, a returning drummer and a new record label (EMG) all in place, 12 Stones is back with their first album in nearly five years. Titled Beneath The Scars, the 50-minute disc is incredibly polished in its production as its 14 tracks take listeners soaring in an alternative rock flight. Songs such as “Infected,” “The One Thing” and “Psycho” will get the teens fist pumping and head banging. Surprisingly, it isn’t all in-your-face rock as there are nearly an equal amount of laid back and melodic tunes on the album, including “For The Night” and “That Changes Everything.” Regardless of the musical style, the songs are fun and catchy so long as you don’t expect any deep artistic substance. The same could be said for the straightforward but positive lyrics. 12 Stones’ five-year hiatus is unnoticeable in their latest effort. Beneath The Scars is a fun disc that fans of the band’s past work – or fellow Christian alternative rockers, Skillet – will enjoy.

AN EPIC, NO LESS We Are The Echo Of Love anepicnoless.com Review by Kevan Breitinger Out of St. Louis, MO comes An Epic, No Less, a worship band with an electronic bent, along the lines of Owl City. The quintet is getting attention not only for their electronic beats and enthusiastically vertical sound, but for the video for the first single, “Mercy Light,” which addresses the issue of human trafficking. “Mercy Light” springs from the Biblical account of Moses’ request to see the glory of God, and the video serves as a harrowing reminder that God’s rescue can be actualized through the church if obedience to the call takes place. We Are The Echo of Love is the fulfillment of keyboardist Todd Larson’s vision, first received years ago while serving in an orphans’ hostel in Uganda. Inspired by electronica bands like Paper Route and Postal Service, the band has created electronic pop songs with an unapologetic worship sensibility. Ten buzzy pop tracks feature airy arrangements (“Come To The Cross” and the strong title track) and vulnerable honesty in the writing (the anthemic “We Need You” and percolating “One Word”), well supported by Britney Stutz’ violin and vocals. Best track may by the stately closer, ballad “Your Love is Louder.”

BELLARIVE The Heartbeat bellarive.com Review by Kevan Breitinger

a blend of anthemic rock and worship, the six-piece band is heading for Dove New Artist recognition. The 12 original tracks feature soaring vocals and electronic flourishes, from the thick guitars of opener “Heartbeat” to the rousing rhythms of “Love Has Found Us.” They make excellent use of big chorale moments (standout “Hope Is Calling”) and well-placed emotive strings (“Measures of Rest”). The ironically titled instrumental “Sing” is four minutes of reverb and bliss. Vocal echoes and synth work add texture throughout the album, but shine brilliantly through the majestic “Taste of Eternity.” Sparkling keys play against sweet guitar licks in “Here We Are,” but the capper has to be quiet encourager “I Know You,” very reminiscent of Coldplay. Closer “Stories” uses reverb and echoing devices to weave song themes together in a final outpouring of worship and gratitude. We’ll be hearing a lot more from Bellarive.

MANAFEST Fighter manafest.ca Review by Josh McConnell Canadian rapper Manafest has returned to the new release wall. Signed to BEC Recordings under the recommendation of Thousand Foot Krutch’s Trevor McNevan in 2005, the solo artist has seen considerable success in Christian music circles. With four albums under his belt on BEC, Manafest is ready to enter the ring for Round 5. Titled Fighter, Manafest continues his trend of becoming an amalgamation of popular Christian acts. With heavy influences from pop-metal groups such as Thousand Foot Krutch, most songs have a similar formula: power chords, rap verses and anthemic choruses. The end result is a mixture of Thousand Foot Krutch, Pillar, FM Static, KJ-52 and tobyMac, among other familiar Christian music industry names. Though there are more aggressive musical elements and rap vocals present, everything is intertwined into an incredibly poppy package to ensure mass appeal. If you are looking for a fun album with catchy, foot-tapping tunes, there’s a lot to like with Fighter. There’s nothing groundbreaking or original per se, but at the same time there’s enough ear candy to please many fans. If you enjoy any of the aforementioned artists, consider checking this one out.

MERCYME The Hurt & The Healer mercyme.org Review by Kevan Breitinger It’s been over a decade since MercyMe made Christian music history with their platinum megahit “I Can Only Imagine,” the first Christian single to reach one million downloads. The Grammy-nominated, multiple GMA Dove Award winners are only one of few CM groups with all of their recordings certified Gold or Platinum, while also selling out major venues like Radio City Music Hall. Seventh studio album The Hurt & The Healer takes an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach: engaging pop rock songs emphasizing

Imagine Coldplay’s airy inventiveness, David Crowder’s musical sensibilities, and Leeland’s passionately vertical orientation, and you’re ready for the fresh debut of Bellarive. Infusing guitar effects, electronica, and poetic lyrics into

23 encouragement and direction for those in the midst of the struggle. Think Train with a vertical orientation. Frontman Bart Millard wrote the title song and the album’s centrepiece after his cousin’s death. Classic MercyMe, it addresses the problem of pain and loss winningly. Millard’s appealing tenor makes it okay to be honest in the trenches. The band does stretch out here and there, most notably in the altrock single “Don’t Give Up On Me,” its Mutemath energy moody and pulsating. I loved the slow burn and steel guitar riffs of “Take The Time.” Guest vocalist Bear Rinehart of Needtobreathe plays well with Millard front and centre. Fans will not be disappointed.

P.O.D. Murdered Love payableondeath.com Review by Josh McConnell P.O.D.’s longevity certainly cannot be argued. Just when you thought you will never see the band again, they surprise fans once more with a reunion after a hiatus. Now signed with a multialbum contract with Razor & Tie Records, the southern California band is celebrating their 20th year with a brand new disc. Going into Murdered Love, one has to listen with an open mind. Those expecting a sequel of their multi-platinum album Satellite will be disappointed, as their mainstream sound is long gone. The band has chosen to stick with their metal and rap-rock mix while throwing in some reggae influences as well. This has always been the band’s approach, but even more so now. Songs such as “Eyez,” “On Fire” and the title track showcase this well thanks to heavy guitars, rapping and screaming. But less abrasive and more melodic tracks do exist, with “Lost In Forever” and “Babylon The Murderer” even giving us a small taste of Satellite. It isn’t flashy, mainstream or pop by any stretch of the imagination. The lyrics are straightforward and blatantly faith influenced. Regardless, fans will enjoy Murdered Love.

YOUNG OCEANS Young Oceans youngoceans.com Review by Kevan Breitinger I know, I know; too much worship music can sometimes come across as canned or recycled. That was last year, people. Introducing Young Oceans, a neo-alternative worship project that evolved from hymns penned and arranged within the Trinity Grace Church community in New York City. The endeavor sprang up as an offshoot from TGC’s two live worship albums when an eclectic gathering of musicians and parishioners began exploring artful re-renderings of those songs in a SoHo apartment. Untethered from the expectations of a traditional congregational format, a musical ethos emerged as more a companion to reflective prayer and meditation than to a typical church experience. Organic, subtle, and intelligent; in short, everything you’ve wanted worship music to grow into. Moody strings enhance the atmospheric charm of “We Sing As One,” and waves of steel guitar riffs do the same for the rootsy “None But Thee.” I love the layered vocals throughout, and the David Crowderlike “Lord Of All.” But the topper has to be the engaging “Nothing Beside Jesus.” Yes, it took a while, but fresh worship has arrived at last.

environmental activist, is upset Adam didn’t call her about his discovery. Adam reminds Rachel that she told him not to call her. Rachel finds out an oil company getting approval for a new pipeline has a huge floating barge that could break through the ice and help the whales get to the open ocean before the Arctic freezes up completely. Mr. McGraw, the oil company leader, sees an opportunity to get some good press. So, he and Rachel force the governor’s hand to use the National Guard to send big helicopters to take the barge the couple hundred miles to Barrow. When the barge breaks down, however, time begins to run out for the whales. It’s up to the town’s Eskimos, a Russian icebreaker, and a couple of ice rink entrepreneurs from Minnesota to save the day. Big Miracle shows people of different backgrounds coming together and solving a problem. Despite having a lot of characters, the filmmakers of Big Miracle deftly keep the focus on saving the whales and solving problems. For example, at one point, the environmental activist and the oilman share a moment of appreciation for one another’s efforts in saving the whales. They admit it’s now hard for them to dislike the other, though they still disagree about the issue of oil drilling. At another point, the activist expresses anger and distrust over the hunting whale tradition of the local Eskimos, and the Eskimos defy her expectations. Finally, at a crucial moment, the leading Eskimo elder prays for the whales in his native language.

Big Miracle does contain some light foul language. Hence, caution is advised, especially for younger children. Recently released on DVD and Blu-ray, this inspirational movie is great for a family movie night. Reviewed by Dr. Ted Baehr

Based on a true story, Big Miracle is a whale of a tale. It’s a very entertaining movie about saving three stranded whales. Set in October, 1988, the movie’s opening focuses on Adam Carlson, a young TV reporter from Anchorage, Alaska. He’s been far north in Barrow, Alaska above the Arctic Circle for several weeks reporting on the local happenings. Adam longs to be a reporter in “the lower 48,” the name Americans use for mainland U.S. He sees his opportunity when he finds three whales trapped in the approaching winter ice just outside of town, especially when his report goes national on NBC News. THE THIRD THIRD OF LIFE by Walter C. Wright “Retirement does not mean being confined to a life of enforced idleness. Retirement has become more like our car being re-tired and, with that new set of tires, setting out on a new and exciting journey.” This is the type of encouragement the reader will find in Walter C. Wright’s book, The Third Third of Life: Preparing for Your Future. As a study guide, Wright says it “offers few answers. Rather I raise questions, hoping your response will point a way forward.” This book is great for a small group of people who are either retired or close to retirement. Chapter are broken into reading, reflection and questions to consider. Contributing writers reflect on moments that shaped their retirement concept and goals. It’s exciting to witness the youthful approach these seniors take transitioning beyond the traditional 9 -5 workday world. Wright did an excellent job compiling writers who are energetic, vibrant and hopeful. As one contributor said, “So here’s my advice to you. Begin to think about the third third of your life as the third fourth. Then live the last bit as the fourth fifth, and so forth. With any luck, you’ll live forever.
