Daughters Toluwalola and Ifeniola are both pharmacists, meanwhile, while the youngest girl Titi is a midwife and talented runner. That leaves 26-year-old Tomi, the fifth child and “most athletic,” he jokes. But then he cracks up and amends himself: “Apart from myself, I’d have to say my older brother [Shola] is the most athletic.” He maintains, however, that his sisters are more competitive than any Ameobi brother. It’s an ongoing debate. FC Edmonton, Tomi’s latest team under the NASL, signed the 6-3, 189-pound striker in March 2014 for that very family trait. “I wanted to see who would jump out of the pack in terms of scoring goals for us,” head coach Colin

Miller told the Edmonton Journal. “Big Tomi’s putting in a real shift and it’s a difficult role that we ask him to play, but … he’s putting in a fantastic effort. His work rate, his pace, his athleticism … he’s a joy to watch at the moment.” Admittedly, Ameobi’s moments are jampacked: besides scoring four straight goals for the Eddies (including one that resulted in a tie against MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps), he is also pursuing a law degree. “Last year, I went on the university website and law popped up,” he tells Living Light News. “I thought, I’m interested in this, even though I don’t know where it’s

ohn and Margaret Ameobi sat their strapping sons down for a lecture. You need to keep up your minds, they said. You need to go to school. A pep talk between desperate parents and their lazy offspring? Hardly. Professional soccer coaches and fans agree: Shola, Tomi and Sammy Ameobi are among the hardest working trios around. Still, having half of their six children play in the pros isn’t a top priority for the Nigerian-born couple. Instead, it’s utilizing whatever talents God gives. “With our faith, whatever God wants [our kids] to be we would have no hesitation,” Margaret told The Evening Chronicle. “We are always happy and glad for the success of our children.” Listing off those successes takes a while: Shola, the oldest son, plays for Crystal Palace in the United Kingdom’s Premiere League, as well as for the Nigerian national team. So does Sammy, the

by Lailani Mendoza She can remember the aftermath. Or more accurately, the “after meth.” The empty fridge. No running water. No electricity. The eviction notices. And the three children crying from hunger. “They eventually fell asleep, and everyone had left the apartment to try and get more drugs,” recalls Alisa Kaplan. She was 19, living with an abusive boyfriend and 10 other people in a one-bedroom drug house. “I remember watching them sleep and I was just thinking to myself, ‘This is not where they should be.’ ” Kaplan wasn’t supposed to be there either. Raised in a loving home, the San Bernardino County, Calif. native was a straight-A student, a captain of the colour guard and a track star athlete. She planned to move to New York and work as a journalist. That was before July 5, 2002. On that day, she was drugged and gang-raped while unconscious by her boyfriend and two of his friends. One of the perpetrators, the son of a powerful and wealthy assistant sheriff, captured the horrific assault on film. When police found the video, Kaplan, then known as “Jane Doe,” was thrust into the centre of one of California’s most notorious rape cases. Almost immediately, she became the target of a vicious smear campaign and was outed in her community. The defense hired a 12-person legal team, plus private investigators that harassed and intimidated Kaplan to settle. The pain, shame and trauma became too much for her. Kaplan became a closet drinker and eventually, a meth addict. “I used it to numb myself. I felt like there was no way out,” she explains. “There was a point when I was using the drugs hoping and praying that they would kill me, because I didn’t have the courage to put a gun to my head.” When the 2004 trial ended in a hung jury, it drove her deeper into addiction. Her parents, once immensely supportive, kicked her out to straighten her up. That day in the apartment, Kaplan realized she’d become a completely different person. “It was like an out-of-body experience. I remember literally being

centre. Unfortunately, all the centres were full. Finally on the seventh day, her phone rang. A spot had opened for inpatient treatment. “That was really when I started seeing that God was starting to play a role in my life ... and my first glimmer of hope that there may be a chance for me to get out of this and be the person that I was meant to be.” During rehab, Kaplan noticed something: women who did well in recovery had turned to God for help. Although it felt weird at first, she decided to start praying. “ ‘This is nuts,’ I’d think self-consciously as I was doing it,” she says. “Gradually I began to feel someone was listening.” Her perpetrators were eventually convicted as sex offenders in 2005. When she read her victim impact standard of football that attracted Ameobi to the NASL. After some friends told him what a “great league” it was, and that he should try for it, he went home and prayed about it. The next morning, his agent called – there’s an opportunity to play in Canada, he said. Was Ameobi interested? In short: yes. “That’s when I knew this is where God wants me,” he says. “Although I don’t usually have prayers answered that quickly!” Ameobi calls Edmonton his “easiest transition” and says everyone in the city has been extremely helpful. “Apart from getting to know my awesome teammates, I’d say getting into the community has been the best thing about Edmonton,” he says. That community includes Celebration Church – not an unusual hangout for a pastor’s kid. But for Ameobi, raised by a pastor and a nurse, a personal relationship with Jesus was a long time coming. “Growing up in church, I thought [faith] was my parents’ thing,” he says. “It wasn’t until I left home and things weren’t the greatest – I went through a troublesome period – that I thought, ‘Let’s give this God thing a go and see if it really works.’” It did. “He always comes through,” Ameobi says. “I don’t know where I would be today if I hadn’t gotten down on my knees and asked Him to come into my life.” Coaches love that sort of humble attitude. After Ameobi scored

statement at the 2006 sentencing, she was physically healthy, clean and sober. However, her soul was not in good shape. “I was happy that I had made the progress that I had, but I just didn’t feel that I was healed,” she explains. “I felt almost like a prisoner in my own body. I just felt like I needed something more.” Finding it wasn’t easy. Kaplan reluctantly agreed to join her mom at a Christian women’s retreat. A massive snowstorm made it almost impossible to get there. By the time they arrived, Kaplan was in a foul mood until she heard Grace’s story. Grace’s beloved son died at 17. She spoke about the grief that almost consumed her. “It just really hit home with me. When she realized that God had – through Jesus Christ – forgiven her, she was able to go through the process of forgiving herself. And that’s really what set her free.” She adds, “Listening to her story got me thinking that maybe there’s that possibility for me.” When the leader asked if anyone wanted to receive God’s forgiveness and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, Kaplan – with tears in her eyes – jumped up. She says, “My life has just flourished in ways I could have never imagined ever since. “That hole that I had been trying to fill for so long with all those bad things, it was filled with God and it has been ever since. The loneliness I had was gone; He became the friend I needed. I felt like what I had been searching for, for so long was in Jesus.” Now, 13 years after the assault, Kaplan has forgiven her perpetrators. She works for a faith-based organization, is in college, and volunteers 18 hours a month at a rape crisis centre. She lives a full life with her rescued dog, does Zumba with her girlfriends, and regularly shares her inspiring story. Recently, she published her memoir Still Room for Hope. None of these would have happened without Jesus Christ. “Never give up hope,” says Kaplan, encouraging others to turn to God for help. “I cannot emphasize more the greatness that comes with having a relationship [with Christ] and knowing that Jesus is your Saviour and He died on the cross already for your sins.” the game winner to open Edmonton’s season in April, Miller told reporters that his newest recruit “is such a solid person, a fantastic professional.” Beyond that, the head coach said, “His role within the group is one of a leader; he has a very calming influence in the group. He’s a very intelligent person and has a lot of class. He’s a very humble person, appreciates what he has, and where he is at currently.” Currently, he’s tied for third in Eddies scoring; Ameobi recently scored four goals in as many games. Even so, he hasn’t set any personal goals for the season, instead choosing to “take every game as it comes and just enjoy it.” “As a Christian, regardless of how things go on the pitch or off the pitch, or even in my personal life, I always give thanks in my heart,” he says. “My joy won’t be tethered to my success, and I will try to always stay humble. When I figured that out, it changed my whole outlook on my career.” The Eddies relish that revelation, along with Ameobi’s much-needed offensive skills. But his offense isn’t his biggest advantage, he says. “[My faith] gives me an edge over other players. I don’t get my identity from being a professional footballer,” he says. “I find my identity in God; He tells me who I am and that I’m worth something. That gives me confidence. “It’s great when coaches say good things about me, but that doesn’t define me. It’s what God says about me.”

Newsbriefs A ‘Beautifully Nerdy’ Bunch BENTON, AR – The America’s Got Talent judges didn’t know what to expect when Will Richey, Tyler Davis and Caleb Conrad stepped onto the stage. So when the Arkansas pop trio who goes by the name Triple Threat started singing, they were in for a surprise. Their catchy rendition of MKTO’s “Classic” had the audience clapping and the amazed judges smiling. Howard Stein called them “beautifully nerdy” while Howie Mandel described the trio as a “real boy band.” Richey and Davis grew up singing in church together. They met Conrad after all three got injured in the high school football team. As they passed the time, the

guys sang and discovered that they harmonized well together. Triple Threat was born. Staying true to their name, they impressed more than just the judges; a video of their America’s Got Talent performance went viral with over 10 million views on KARK 4 News’ Facebook page and two million views on the official AGT channel. On their Facebook page, the group posted, “Thanks for all the support! We’re extremely grateful! Hope you’ve all watched and shared!” Their goal is to make it “on God-given talent and creativeness” instead of focusing solely on looks. The trio moves up to the next level as they battle for the $1 million grand prize.

Committed To His Calling FORT MCMURRAY, AB – Seven years ago, Fort McMurray was the farthest thing from Clay Hilton’s mind. A Louisiana-born pastor, Hilton was helping establish a church near Dallas at the time when he saw a documentary about the northern Alberta community and the oilsands. “I had never been to Alberta, but really felt the Lord wanted me to be there,” Hilton, who moved with his wife to Fort McMurray in 2008 told the Edmonton Journal. After over 20 years of working as a pastor, He found a new way to live out his calling. Hilton runs Captain’s Place, the only facility in the region for men with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. With no prior experience with fetal alcohol

patients, Hilton has done an impressive job serving over two years as a mentor and house parent at the assisted living facility – a role he enjoys immensely. “Being employed is great, but being employed at something where you feel like you are helping people is truly amazing,” he told the Journal. “Being a man of faith, I read about how important it is to make a difference in people’s lives. And Captain’s Place has given me that opportunity.” The men that Hilton serves have benefitted as well. “Clay is absolutely caring, dedicated and committed to the cause. We are very blessed to have him,” says Lena Wagner, the business manager for the North East Alberta Fetal Alcohol Network which funds the residence.

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Paramount Pictures will feature the riveting story of Ashley Smith, Atlanta’s hostage hero, in its upcoming film Captive. Slated to open in theatres September 18, 2015, the film stars David Oyelowo (Selma) and Kate Mara (House Of Cards). Ten years ago, the widowed mom and recovering addict was taken hostage by Brian Nichols, the target of a city-wide manhunt after he escaped the courthouse and killed four people. Smith engaged Nichols in conversation, shared her troubled past and read to him from The Purpose Driven Life. Surprisingly, Nichols let her go. Smith called 911 to turn him in, and Nichols – fresh off a killing spree – peacefully surrendered to authorities. Smith wrote her autobiography Unlikely

Angel shortly after the ordeal. “A large part of it was to help me heal, but also I just wanted to help others see that there was nothing that they could do that God wouldn’t forgive them for,” she told The Digital Breakdown. She’s now remarried and regularly speaks to groups about her experience. Smith is impressed by the movie. “They did a fantastic job,” she said. “I think that my favourite part of my story is that God never gave up on me, you know. When I gave up on myself, and I didn’t think that my life was worth anything anymore, God showed me something different. He just humbled me and said ‘I love you in everything you are.’ I don’t know that anyone had ever done that for me before.”

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Fans of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars may wonder why Carrie Ann Inaba is always smiling. “I’ll let you in on a little secret. I pray before work,” the 47-year-old veteran choreographer shared in Guideposts. “Backstage … while I get my makeup on and make final adjustments to my gown, I always say the same prayer: God, thank you for all that is, was and will be.” Inaba admits she wasn’t sure at first why God gave her the DWTS job. “I was a dancer, onstage and on TV and in movies. I never wanted to do anything else ... Then along came this job.” It made sense when she was later diagnosed with a condition that would keep her from dancing. “Remember the ‘All that is’ part of my prayer? God had been out ahead of me … He’d prepared me for

Compassion For A Criminal CHICAGO, IL – In her new book, Change Of Heart, Jeanne Bishop talks about her journey of forgiving the person who murdered her pregnant sister Nancy and her brother-in-law Richard 25 years ago. The killer, David Biro, was a high school honours student who bragged about the murders. He's now serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole. When Biro was sentenced, Bishop had decided to forgive him – and never think about him again. Then in 2012, she read an essay on forgiveness that reads “No Christian is ever in the position of privilege, wronged one or wrongdoer, where he or she is excused from the responsibility of

working for reconciliation.” Offended, Bishop contacted the author: “I said, 'I'm supposed to reconcile with him? What would it look like?” she told the Chicago Tribune. “He said it would look like Jesus on the cross.” She told Christianity Today, “I had always made a divide between Nancy's killer and me. Him: bad murderer. Me: innocent victim's family member. The truth was, there was no division between us before God – we were both flawed and fallen.” Since then the Christian lawyer has visited Biro in prison 15 times. “It's not okay what you did, but I am not going to hate you … I am going to wish that you will be redeemed,” she told Biro.

After carding 64 and 68 at a Dallas qualifier in June, he became the third youngest golfer in U.S. Open history. China’s Andy Zhang (14 when he played in 2012) and Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa (four months younger than Hammer at his debut in 2006) were the only younger golfers to qualify for the elite PGA tournament. “Hitting next to Rory [McIlroy], that’s pretty special for me ... to come out here and play against all these guys. LOVING THEIR

Neighbours by Melanie F. Gibbs

“We have seen how a couple of grocery items turn into a dinner for a large group of people.”

Kathy Put of NEXT Community Church coordinates church volunteers who provide meals for female street workers.

did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” “It is a practical, personal response to huge social issues that will take generations to resolve,” she says. “It also calls on us to be generous with our own resources.” Put explains that because NEXT volunteers are helping with meals, MCFS workers can focus on their clients’ bigger needs. “At one meal, a woman came to eat and approached a worker for help in leaving the abusive relationship she was in,” she recalls. “Because we were looking after the meal, their staff was able to locate a safe place for her to go to, and work out the details of getting her there.” “It’s been a remarkable partnership,” affirms Sterling. “Because we provide services to vulnerable women, a lot of the work we do is crisis-focused. The

partnership has allowed us to engage in activities for women to come together, share a meal and access other support in a safe environment.” “One of the great things about this partnership,” adds Dean Kurpjuweit, NEXT Senior Pastor, “is we get to affirm these ladies are doing God’s work.” He points to Jesus’ words in John 13:34: “A new command I give you: Love one another.” The church’s expression of love is not lost on MCFS staff or their female clients. “We have a group of angels behind us doing good work,” says Sterling. “The biggest effect we have seen is the impact this ministry has had on our mostly middle class congregation,” Put reports. “We have a deeper gratitude for the way we can fill our grocery carts with food. We have seen

how our small gifts of a couple of grocery items turn into a dinner for a large group of people. We have been privileged to be a small and practical part of a much bigger movement of healing. “The backdrop to all of this is Canada’s historic failure to support and respect First Nation culture and people,” continues Put, who observes that poverty and lack of opportunities has resulted in many First Nations and Metis women being involved in the sex trade. “Many of us who are outside the aboriginal community had no knowledge at all of this history and as we learn, we want to be able to be part of the restoration. “For me, and for NEXT as a congregation, making lots of really good food is our first step towards that.”

For one suburban Edmonton congregation, the journey toward restoration started by simply cooking some turkeys for a Christmas dinner. Four years later, the partnership NEXT Christian Community in St. Albert formed with Métis Child & Family Services (MCFS) has turned into an active ministry to sex trade workers. The partnership is part of Project SNUG, which MCFS created to help provide for the safety and mental health of street workers. “Their goal is to present options to women and help them in practical ways where they are,” says Kathy Put, NEXT’s volunteer coordinator. “Working with SNUG/MCFS has been a way for us to stretch our definition of ‘neighbour.’” In addition to preparing the aforementioned Christmas dinner, about half of the families in the congregation have been involved in one way or another. Some help cook and serve food for spring and fall lunches. Some provide grocery items for those meals. Some sew handmade bags that are filled with gifts and given away at Christmas. MCFS’s freezer is often stocked

with sandwiches, cookies and casseroles provided by NEXT volunteers, notes Laura Sterling, MCFS Outreach Support Worker. Even the church’s younger generation has become involved. Sterling recounts how kids have convinced teachers to allow classes to sew bags as projects and young people have come to help at meals. Put cites Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:31-40 as motivation: “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat ... whatever you

a prayer. At tournaments, the league hosts a worship service. No drinking, coarse language or arguing is allowed to keep it family-friendly. And besides recognizing the champions, the league also rewards those with the most Christ-like attitude. In addition, the league aims to give back by raising money through a batting derby at the year-end tournament. In the past, they’ve donated to the Pregnancy Care Centre, Stollery Children’s Hospital, and families in need who have gone through the Stollery. “[We’re] just trying to give back to people in the community and be Christ’s extension to those who need it,” said league president Nate Feller. But there’s another reason why the league donates to the Stollery. In 2010, Webb and his wife Monique were told their two-year-old son Jackson would need open-heart surgery. “Man did we pray. And cry. And pray some more,” recalled Webb. “Several of the teams took the time to gather around my wife and I before our weekly games to pray for our family and our son’s upcoming surgery.” The surgery was a success. “As soon as they turned off the bypass machine, his levels all came directly up to normal. He spent less than a day in NICU when they predicted he would be there for two to three days. And within a

week, we were home. “Until this point in my life, I’m not sure I can say I witnessed a tangible miracle.” The Webbs came home just in time for their year-end tournament. With full support of the league, the Webbs led the players in raising money at the tournament to buy new toys for the children’s hospital. “The following week, my wife went on a shopping spree and walked into the Stollery, with my fully healed little boy, and pulled a wagon full of toys into that waiting room. Since then we have raised over $4,000 for families.” Webb said it was all thanks to Jesus. “He has given me hope; He has given me a drive to help other people; He has given me an amazing family; He has given me everything. My life is nothing without him.” He added, “This league is like a big crazy family, and I can’t believe how blessed I am to be a part of it!”

Real Housewife, Lifestyles

Real Faith

n the middle of couture and catfights, bling and bejeweled dog collars, cameras and convertibles, teeters Lydia McLaughlin in her Christian Louboutins. She’s one of them – the owner of Beverly Hills Lifestyle magazine, the granddaughter of Canadian media mogul Geoff Stirling, a Season 8 Real Housewives of Orange County (RHOC) cast member – and yet, she isn’t. “Hollywood is part of my life for work, but it is not who I am,” she tells Living Light News.

fellow Christian Housewife Alexis Bellino, her efforts often fell short. “The hardest part of the show was just the negativity,” she says. “People love drama and that show is dramatic. It was hard inviting that into your life.” So when, after just one season, she felt the Holy Spirit saying, “You don’t have

When McLaughlin talks about being “thankful for this sweet season of life,” she isn’t referencing her palatial Monarch Beach home or any business venture.

Then who is she? Who is this woman whom other Housewives described as bubbly and positive, a peacemaker during the on-air RHOC wars, and who donates portions of her high-end jewelry line proceeds to the anti-trafficking organization iSanctuary? Readers of her book Beyond Orange County: A Housewives Guide to Faith & Happiness (Worthy Publishing) think they know. “Lydia is the real deal,” writes an Amazon reviewer named Amanda. “She loves Jesus and it shows in every aspect of her life.” JoJo’s Corner, meanwhile, says, “I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I found was a young woman who loves the Lord, walks close to Him and has a desire to inspire and encourage other women to do the same. I was in awe of her faith in the midst of ‘Hollywood.’ ” That’s a sentiment felt by most RHOC viewers. After all, the premise of the wildly-

to be here,” she turned down the producers’ invitation to return for Season 9. “As I prayed about the decision, I didn’t feel in my heart of hearts that I was called to do another season of the show,” she writes in the recently-released Beyond Orange County. “My true motivation for doing the show again was based more on the worldly benefits … I had gotten a taste of fame and recognition, and it was fun. The money the network offers you is enticing. The dresses and makeup and all things girlie were tempting.” Yet the faith that McLaughlin has clung to since her freshman year of high school gave her the strength to resist. Today, the girl once voted “Class Clown” and “Best Dressed” can see the post-RHOC benefits. “I have always wanted to write a book,” she says. “I have always had a heart for high school girls and to encourage them. I feel like the show has given me the opportunity to do that.” And then some. McLaughlin feels more

strongly than ever about spending time “in the Word” – her book uses frequent Scripture references – and surrounding herself “with other believers; to have people in your life that know you and lift you up, and can call you out on your stuff.” While Orange County can feel like its own universe, McLaughlin knows the tension between wealth and Jesus’ simple message of love is something every North American must face – and with Christ’s help, she’s ready for her mission. “God knows our hearts and what we hold dear,” she says. “I try to stay in my own lane, and not compare myself to others, but to focus on what I have, what I can give, and how I can be used for God’s work.”

popular Bravo reality show and its spinoffs sticks to a neat formula: take beautiful, rich women, throw them together and see what happens. So where does that leave a devout Christian girl who “always wanted to be a mother and a wife”? According to McLaughlin, exactly where God wants her. “My relationship with Jesus Christ affects my career completely,” she says. “He is steering this ship and I am just along for the ride!” About a 3,000-mile-long ride, to be exact. McLaughlin’s father is a native Newfoundlander and moviemaker who married McLaughlin’s mother after casting her in one of his films. After living in Newfoundland for over a decade, they relocated to Southern California, where McLaughlin’s mother is from. “I consider myself a Newfoundlander and an American,” the 34-year-old businesswoman says. “Now I visit Newfoundland for summers and holidays.” One look at her jam-packed schedule says Canada might have to wait. Alongside publishing Beverly Hills Lifestyle with her husband Doug McLaughlin, the petite fashionista runs LYDIA M Jewelry, the luxury marketing agency SKYLAB Media Group, Inc. and its spinoff SKYLAB Modern Art, a gallery in Laguna Beach, Calif. She also recently launched OC Lydia, a fashion and lifestyle blog. Still, when McLaughlin talks about being “thankful for this sweet season of life,” she isn’t referencing her palatial Monarch Beach home or any business venture. She’s referring to her nine-year marriage to Doug and their three young sons: Stirling (six), Maverick (four) and Roman (seven months). “Doug and I are dreamers. We love to imagine the future and have goals, but we also love to see God unfolding His goodness and living in the moment,” she says. “We … have transitioned great into a family of five. So I guess you could say our goal is to stop and be still and really appreciate these moments.” Her fellow RHOC cast members might label that attitude as typical. McLaughlin often tried to bring the ladies together during feuds, and despite her bond with

Take Five Change Your Life!

by Carolyn R. Tomlin

A

s a child, I remember playing the “FiveMinute Game.” If you’re not familiar with this activity, you set the clock for five minutes and see how much you could do in this length of time. Over the years, the activities have changed but the rules stay the same. Think about what you can do in five minutes that would change your life. As seniors, could you commit to a few minutes daily that would make you a healthier person, give you more energy, produce a better night’s sleep and help regulate blood pressure, cholesterol and other medical issues? The answer is exercise. The benefits of regular exercise can help you enjoy life and develop a sense of purpose. Of course, check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise. Use the five minute intervals several times daily. Let’s get started!

Stretch! Think like a cat! Does a feline jump up and start running? No, they stretch first then move. For humans, here are some simple

stretches to start with. With feet together, twist your upper body from left to right. Raise arms over the head. If possible, bend and touch your toes. If balance is a problem, warm up while sitting in a chair. Modify these exercises accordingly for your personal safety and benefit.

Stay Hydrated Try this quick five-minute recipe to jumpstart your day. Before bedtime each night, fill a 32-oz. pitcher with cold water. Combine half a lemon sliced, one cucumber sliced, one teaspoon grated ginger, and ¼ cup fresh basil (or two tablespoons dried basil). Refrigerate over night or for several hours. Drink one cup before walking or jogging. You can also enjoy this refreshing brew throughout the day.

Walk More

Our bodies are like a machine. If we expect our bones, joints, and muscles to perform like a well-oiled device, we have to keep them in top form. Think about your work or activities on a daily basis. Try this: Set a five-minute timer and see how much you can accomplish.

For example, sweep or mop a floor, run the vacuum, distribute clothes from the dryer to the correct closet or shelves. Another way to add five-minute breaks is to walk or jog through the house every time you use a cordless or smartphone. The important thing is you’re walking – your body doesn’t care where or when. Limit exercise to a couple of hours before bedtime for a better night’s sleep. A friend jogs when the microwave is on a few minutes, when brushing her teeth, while waiting for a pan of water to boil on the stove. The great thing about this, you don’t have to dress to go out in public and you can perform it throughout the day. At age 75, she keeps her

“Think five-minute jobs.”

blood pressure under control without medication by jogging or walking in the privacy of her home.

Catch Some Rays

Many seniors have a deficiency in vitamin D. We can get this important vitamin from fish, eggs, and green leafy vegetables. We can pop a pill. But the easiest way is to catch at least a few minutes of sunshine daily. Combine sun with exercise. With warm weather, what outside chores demand your attention? Again, think five-minute jobs. You may need to incorporate several five-minute breaks to complete your work. You can pull weeds in the flower bed, gather vegetables in the garden, or wash the car. Walk the dog; you’ll both benefit from the fresh air and exercise. Allow your senses to capture sights, smells, odours and things you hear. Keep your mind active by making a five-minute list when you return. We all are given 24 hours a day or 1,440 minutes. How will you use the time God has given you? Challenge yourself to develop a healthy exercise program that incorporates five-minute segments throughout your day.

Wellness What’s With by Beth Bence Reinke, MS, RD There’s nothing like an ice-cold pop on a sweltering summer day. The bubbly-sweet refreshment has become a cultural norm, available at every grocery and convenience store on the continent. It tastes delicious going down, but is it good for you? Most soft drinks are carbonated water – which creates the nose-tickling fizz – plus phosphoric acid, sweetener and flavouring. Colas get their dark shade from caramel colour and many have caffeine, too. Some pop flavours contain preservatives such as sodium benzoate or artificial dyes such as red 40. Sweeteners vary, but most regular pop has sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, while diet pop contains artificial sweeteners. Some of the newer products boast a blend of real sugar and artificial sweeteners, to decrease calories a little bit while still sporting a sugar-like taste. Between the two, diet or regular pop, which is the healthier choice? The Rap Sheet On Regular Pop Here’s how regular pop stacks up from a nutrient standpoint: It has no protein, fat, complex carbs, fibre or significant

amounts of vitamins or minerals. Pop weighs in at about 150 empty calories per 355 ml can. They’re called “empty calories” because they provide energy from simple sugars, but no healthpromoting nutrients. That 355 ml can is skimpy compared to the 1.5-litre bottles found in convenience stores, so calories in regular pop can easily double to 300 per individual bottle. Or rack up more sugary calories with a mammoth-sized fountain pop in a cup with a lid and straw. How Much Sugar? Most of us wouldn’t chomp down 10 teaspoons of sugar with a spoon, but we’ll happily guzzle the same amount in a 355 ml can of pop. In fact, the average Canadian adult consumes 26 teaspoons of sugar per day – one-third of it from sweetened drinks. Speaking of sugar, is it real sugar in your pop, or is it high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)? Table sugar, also called sucrose, consists of one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule bound together. In a teaspoon of sugar, there are equal amounts of glucose and fructose. HFCS also contain glucose and fructose, but not in equal amounts. Most HFCS used in pop is higher in fructose than glucose. Whether HFCS is worse for you than real cane sugar is being debated by nutrition scientists, but for the purposes of discussing pop, suffice it to say they’re both unhealthy. Health Risks Of Regular Pop Drinking sugary pop is linked to excess calories and being overweight, even in children. The extra fructose from HFCS can lead to accumulation of belly fat,

? p o p e h t including visceral fat, the kind around your organs. Numerous studies link sugary beverage consumption to type 2 diabetes risk. One review of data from 175 countries found that an extra 150 calories per day from sugar – remember, that’s one can of pop – increases the risk of developing diabetes. There is also evidence that excess sugar intake may be linked to heart disease, cancer and dementia.

One study showed almost double the risk of becoming obese over time in people who drank three or more artificially sweetened beverages per day. Studies also link diet pop consumption with metabolic syndrome, a group of symptoms that raise the chances of developing diabetes, stroke or heart disease. If you’re pregnant, talk with your obstetrician about beverage choices because studies have linked diet pop with pre-term delivery.

The Skinny On Diet Pop Like regular pop, diet pop lacks nutrients, other than water. The artificial sweeteners are either zero-calorie or very-low-calorie, so it seems like they should be helpful with weight loss, or at least prevent weight gain. However, the opposite appears to be more likely, leading researchers to suggest that artificially sweetened beverages may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.

The Bottom Line It turns out neither regular nor diet pop have any redeeming qualities. Whether it’s in a can, bottle or sipped through a straw, pop is a not-so-sweet beverage that harms your health.

S

depression. Christ is the only one who can fill the void.” After she made the decision to follow Christ, her life changed drastically. Her dream of becoming an actor finally came true, and she was soon starring in films with established actors like John Schneider of The Dukes of Hazzard fame. She also found purpose. Rather than focusing on herself, she is now a soughtafter motivational speaker who reaches out to other women who are struggling with loneliness and acceptance. Along with co-author Claire Yorita Lee, Rigby shares her journey in her new book Beautifully Flawed. The book idea developed after Rigby was cast to play the mother of a child who survived an abortion attempt in the riveting film October Baby. No one but Rigby knew she had gone through an abortion herself, and eventually Rigby decided it was time to let go of her secrets and shame. Her most difficult decision was telling her husband Matt, the man who invited her to church and helped her understand the love of Jesus. Rather than turn her away, Matt embraced her and offered unconditional love. Likewise, when Rigby told her co-workers on the set of October Baby about her abortion, they showed her compassion. Being surrounded by a community of believers confirmed that God was all she ever really needed. “God had taken my flaws and my shame, and He used them in the most unbelievable way while allowing me to release it all to Him,” she explains. As a child, Rigby went to church and heard about Jesus, but she never made the decision to follow Him. Thus, she continued making one mistake after another. She met and married Don, disregarding his violent temper and cocaine use. The morning after their honeymoon, Rigby woke up not feeling right. A trip to the doctor’s office confirmed her intuition. The moment she

It wasn’t until years later when Rigby made a decision to follow Jesus Christ that she found everything she never realized she was looking for – unconditional love, forgiveness, and security. “Truly the only way to remove loneliness from our life is to know our only leading man … and that’s Christ,” she tells Living Light News. “There will be times in our life that we’ll go through loneliness or

ome of us wish on a star, but the young, impressionable Shari Rigby wanted to be a star – or at least date one. Little did she know her wish would come true but not in the way she hoped. Growing up, Rigby possessed a larger-thanlife imagination. “I was kind of this odd child that people tried to stick into a box,” she shares. They couldn’t put me in with the artistic kids, and they couldn’t put me in with the brainiac kids either.” When her family moved to Phoenix, Ariz., she found the only place she belonged was with the misfits and rebels who loved rock music, cigarettes, and parties – just as her favourite celebrities did. “I was completely seduced by the illusion of happiness and success of Hollywood movies,” she says, adding, “It was then and there I knew I had to find my rockstar.” Rigby hung out with her older, beautiful blonde cousin Jodi, who was “the essence of cool.” Through this association, she met a boy named Brian who made her feel included. Rigby soon found herself, still a child, alone in Brian’s bedroom with no adult supervision. “I was so wrapped up in the illusion of a Hollywood romance, I was willing to offer up my innocence to become an ‘adult’ like

heard the news, her thoughts ran the gamut. “I was pregnant. I felt scared, happy, sad, and in disbelief.” To make matters worse, she was still in high school. Rigby’s pregnancy went full term, and she delivered a healthy boy she named Donnie. From that point on, matters went from bad to worse. She and Don separated, and she moved back in with her parents. Still searching for someone to fill her void, she went from one relationship to another. “I wanted so badly to love, to be loved, and to have a father for Donnie, I could only see what I wanted to see, blind to everything else.” Romantic but dysfunctional relationships became the norm – until she met Matt. On their second official date he invited her to go to church with him. But all she could think about is that everyone would know and judge her as the girl with a horrible past. When the pastor delivered the message, Rigby was intrigued by this thing he talked about called grace. “As I savoured the thought, tears streamed down my face, and I prayed to the Lord to

forgive me,” she explained. “Instantly I felt a sense of peace. I’d gone to church in order to win the love of a man, but instead I received a love that was so much greater.” The couple married, and after almost giving up hope on getting pregnant, the couple were finally blessed with the birth of Levi. They recently celebrated 18 years of marriage. Since that time, Rigby’s life has been a happy whirlwind of film shoots, interviews and conferences amidst normal family business, far removed from the downward spiral she endured before giving her life to Christ. Despite daily struggles, she no longer carries that sense of emptiness. Her mission now is to work on projects that focus on redemption, restoration, and preparation just like her latest project Wildflower, a faith-based thriller slated to come out this fall. “We’re all beautiful, and we’re all flawed,” she says, “that’s why our Saviour is who He is. “No matter what happens in our lives in the past or what is to come, Christ will love us and see us through everything.”

Living Light News - July / August 2015 THE BRILLIANCE Brother thebrilliancemusic.com Review by Lindsay Williams Brother is a fitting title for The Brilliance’s major label debut on Integrity Music. The duo’s David Gungor and John Arndt have shared a brotherly bond since childhood. Every cut on Brother is decidedly church music. In fact, the band originated out of David’s desire to craft songs for his own church’s liturgical calendar. Complex melodies and abstract lyrics abound, built mostly on piano and strings, and osculating between moments of pure darkness and instances of sheer beauty. Anchored around themes of peace and justice, Brother provides songs that trace every believer’s journey. Influenced by the art of iconic musicians like Bach, it’s easy to simply get lost in the neoclassical melodies, which at times are imposing and other times provide space to simply breathe. The title track builds to an anthemic pinnacle, while “Now And At The Hour” plays off of a handful of beautiful piano notes. Meanwhile, “Make Us One” with all its distortions and jagged edges is one of the album’s most polarizing offerings. Brother isn’t for everyone, but for those looking for artful, out-of-the-box worship steeped in the tradition of the Church, be prepared to hit “repeat.” CHRIS MCCLARNEY Everything And Nothing Less chrismcclarney.com Review by Matt Conner Recorded live at the 2015 Jesus Culture Conference in Sacramento, Calif., the latest release from worship leader Chris McClarney is a powerful invitation into a worshipful and inspirational setting. Everything And Nothing Less adds another powerful release to McClarney’s catalog, and should see considerable traction given his growing popularity after penning the popular worship song, “Your Love Never Fails.” McClarney opens the set with “Holy Moment,” a reminder to all listeners both in the moment and on the album of God’s presence and the inherent possibilities therein. The title track sounds straight out of the Hillsong United canon with a slower refrain that repeats the simple line, “I surrender all.” The song should resonate with many church congregations. Even though there are only nine songs, the live setting allows each to linger for a considerable amount of time, so the listener is unlikely to feel slighted by the amount of tracks. Both McClarney fans or those looking for a fresh worship set to spin should enjoy this new album. MORGAN HARPER NICHOLS Morgan Harper Nichols morganharpernichols. com Review by Matt Conner If you’re a fan of the memorable acoustic melodies of Jamie Grace, then you might already be familiar with the name and music of Morgan Harper Nichols. The latest signing

JukeBox to Gotee Records is actually the older sister of their hit vocalist, Jamie Grace. Nichols has been a strong vocalist and performer in her own right for years, and now she’s joining her sibling as labelmates. This will give Gotee a great family package to present and market. Fortunately, the label also has another solid pop performer to add to their repertoire. The songs on Morgan Harper Nichols’ self-titled LP stay safely within familiar pop structures, but a strong guest list makes the entire listen a lot more enjoyable. Grace appears on the beach-side feel of “Storyteller” and Third Day vocalist Mac Powell appears on the album’s gospel centerpiece “I Can’t Save Myself.” Both are among the album’s highlights. Some songs in this shorter set can be a little bland, but there’s no denying the familial talent here. Fans of Jamie Grace would do well to pick this one up. OWL CITY Mobile Orchestra owlcitymusic.com Review by Lindsay Williams Owl City (a.k.a. Adam Young) is quite the chameleon. Long before Zedd was making cameos look cool, Owl City was inviting artists from different genres to collaborate. Like its predecessors, Mobile Orchestra is no stranger to guest vocalists. In fact, Young must have a bevy of A-listers on speed dial since the album boasts appearances by Aloe Blacc, Sarah Russell, Hanson, Jake Owen and Britt Nicole. The album showcases Owl City’s agile versatility. He could easily send at least half of the tracks to five different radio formats, including Triple A, Top 40, Electronica, Country and Christian. (The most surprising cut being “Back Home,” his pop/country mash-up with Jake Owen.) While Owl City has always been more at home on mainstream radio, faith has always been in Young’s lyrics. Buoyant pop gem “My Everything” and ballad “You’re Not Alone” (featuring Britt Nicole) make the boldest statements of his Christian faith. Other tracks offer positive messages, particularly “This Isn’t The End,” which tells the story of a young girl whose father commits suicide. While the songs need lyrical depth, the melodies are innovative and fresh. All in all, the secret ingredient of Mobile Orchestra lies in Owl City’s keen ability to reinvent himself with every single track. LIFEHOUSE Out Of The Wasteland lifehousemusic.com Review by Josh McConnell After taking a break and working on solo projects, Lifehouse has returned to the new release wall with its seventh studio album. Titled Out of the Wasteland, the 12-track effort feels like a return to the group’s roots. There’s much less experimentation and more from the heart, with the end result being alternative, southern and grunge influences all packed into a tamer soundtrack. Though there are definitely upbeat tracks (“Hurricane,”

13 “One For The Pain,” “Stardust”) and ballads (“Flight,” “Central Park,” “Yesterday’s Son”), most of the tracks fall somewhere in between. It’s rocky enough so you’re foot is constantly tapping, but it also has a soothing and reflective sort of ambivalence. In the past, Lifehouse wasn’t considered southern enough for country radio or mainstream enough for Top 40. But with the recent surge in popularity of genre-blurring artists such as Mumford, groups like Lifehouse have new legs. This sound, once more fringe, is now situated comfortably in the mainstream. Out of the Wasteland is one of the most Lifehousesounding records the group has released in years. It is worth your time. FINDING FAVOUR Reborn findingfavour.com Review by Lindsay Williams New band Finding Favour is hard to peg. While they probably lean more pop overall, the band’s sound is a perfect reflection of current consumer music preferences. Fans are no longer just listening to one genre, so Finding Favour seems to serve up a little bit of everything, all the while managing to release an album that’s cohesive from front to back. Reborn begins as an anthemic, foot-stomping worship project until listeners get to track four. From there, they won’t be able to place the band in any one genre. “Feels Like The First Time” is a straightforward love song, while standout “Be Like You” beautifully captures the sentiments of a new dad whose sole desire is to model Jesus for his kids. Meanwhile, the backroad dust of “Tiny Town” could easily be kicked up by Zac Brown Band, and “Say Amen” finds the band drawing on soulful southern gospel to round out the set. Their melodies are tight, and lead singer Blake NeeSmith’s vocals are flawlessly rich. It’s clear these four gentleman from Georgia are storytellers at heart, regardless of the setting’s musical style. If Reborn is any indication, this band has a long career ahead of them and even some crossover potential. JON FOREMAN Sunlight jonforeman.com Review by Josh McConnell Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman likes to keep himself busy. Back in 2007 and 2008, he released four EPs – one for each season in the year. Now he has decided to release another four solo EPs for a total of 24 tracks, one for each hour of the day. The entire project is called The Wonderlands, and the first disc is Sunlight. Sunlight’s six tracks have a very tender, coffeehouse folky sound. Heavily driven by acoustic guitar and vocals, the songs often start very bare-boned as more instruments slowly join in by the time the chorus hits. Most of the time, it feels as if Foreman is playing to you outside on the steps. The album feels very calming and atmospheric. But Caroline has a bit of a southern twist, thanks to its harmonica. Patron Saint of Rock and Roll has a slight bop and Americana vibe to its piano riff. And while most tracks feature softer vocals, Foreman punched things up a couple of tracks, feeling more like Switchfoot b-sides than the rest. Always well thought out and produced, Jon Foreman doesn’t disappoint with the first of his new series. Pick this one up.

Hidden Harley by Phil Callaway Have you ever haggled at yard sales? Do you find yourself saying, “Hey! Those cassette tapes … would you take $3 for the whole lot?” If so, you are cheap my friend. I know a guy who spends Saturdays comparison shopping at yard sales. He says, s Phil Callaway “I saw that same Barry Manilow record at Bob’s place for 25 cents. Can you beat that? And what’s your return policy?” I’ll tell you my return policy. If he returns to my yard sale I will snap a Barry Manilow record over his head. I never appreciated yard sales until I found a painting at one. I bought it for the full asking price of 10 bucks, knowing it resembled something from that great painter, Michael Picasso. I was so excited. A friend who knows all about art was excited too when I showed him. “You paid 10 bucks,” he said. “You got taken. This is a really bad high school art project.” Bob was used to overpaying at yard sales too. One Saturday his neighbours were selling off their excess stuff, so he walked over and started sifting through the junk – stuff he’d never use. Then something caught his eye. It was partially hidden under a tablecloth, but the shape was unmistakable. A motorcycle. A Harley-Davidson. “Is the bike for sale?” he asked his neighbour. The man shrugged. “I don’t see why not. But that bike hasn’t run since I’ve had it.” Bob nodded. “How much do you want for it?” “How does 35 bucks sound?” They shook hands and Bob took it home. The Harley needed some work, so he called Harley-Davidson to see what it would cost for parts.

Jay Leno upped the offer to $500,000. The dealer asked for the serial number and Bob gave it to him. Bob was put on hold, but soon the parts man was back on the line. He sounded different. More engaged. “Listen, Bob, could you take the seat off your bike and see if anything is written underneath?” Bob wondered what this was all about. But he did as he was told, and returned to the phone. “Yes,” he said, “it does have something written there. It says, ‘THE KING.’ There was silence. “Bob, my boss has authorized me to offer you $300,000 for the bike, payable to you immediately. Do we have a deal?” Bob was stunned. “I-I’ll have to think about it,” he stammered, and hung up. His hands were shaking. The next day Bob got a call from Jay Leno. Leno upped the offer to $500,000. You see, the bike Bob had redeemed from the scrap pile had been owned by “The King,” Elvis Presley. After all those years of seeking “The Big Find,” Bob found it. But he hadn’t even recognized what he had. The value of the motorcycle, of course, wasn’t in the metal or the parts. It didn’t even run! It was all tied to the fact that it had been owned by “The King.” No matter how your day is going, I’d like to tell you something that should put a smile on your face. You are worth more than any Harley. How do I know? Because 1 John 3:1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” He saw in us something of infinite value. He purchased us, and wrote His name on our hearts. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord, you belong to the King of Kings. So let’s dust ourselves off and give thanks to the God who would rather die to save us than live without us. Phil Callaway is a speaker, bestselling author, and host of Laugh Again Radio. Accountability That Counts by Dr. Charles F. Stanley Years ago I asked Andy and Becky to tell me the most important principle they had learned from me while they were growing up. They thought about it for a while and then, to my amazement, they both said practically the same thing: that we are ultimately accountable and responsible to God.

Teach Your Children God’s Truth Early In Life Whether you want to or not, you are teaching your children by example. The way you live and the way you respond to your circumstances – and especially to the Lord – have a huge impact. We have to teach them to trust God and His Word. They also must learn that God loves them unconditionally, and that we do too. What’s more, just like the father of the prodigal son, we need to forgive them when they make mistakes (Luke 15).

The Most Important Lesson A Child Can Learn In Romans 14:10-12, the apostle Paul writes, “For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.’ So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.” While you never want your children to become fearful of the Lord, you certainly want to teach them that He is aware of their lives, and their actions

s Dr. Charles F. Stanley have consequences. The Lord has given us life to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17). But He does not want us to compromise what we know is true and right. If our children sense that they can disobey and get away with it, they will have difficulty complying with anyone who makes or enforces rules. One mother recounted how her son grew up stealing cookies before dinner. At first she considered this a harmless act and even admitted that she and her husband laughed about it – until they learned at a parent-teacher conference that their son’s petty thievery had escalated and now included lying. The father then realized his son did not recognize the authority that was in his life. When a child understands he is accountable not just to an earthly father but to almighty God, his attitude toward rebellion will become one of healthy fear.

Requirements For Accountability

Teaching your child how to be accountable to the Lord requires both risk and

patience. When Andy was a teenager, he told me about a certain activity he wanted to try. I was dead set against it, but instead of saying no and risking that he might walk away with thoughts of rebellion, I asked him to pray about his involvement. He did and returned later even more convinced that God was okay with his plans. While I did not agree, I decided to entrust him to the Lord. It wasn’t long before Andy was standing in the doorway to my study, asking to talk with me. He began telling me about what he had seen and how convicted he felt about having been in that situation. He even went on to say he believed God was calling him into the ministry, and he never wanted to return to this activity again. I was so grateful to God that I could have shouted! What steps can you take to create a sense of accountability in your children? 1. Allow responsibility for setting standards and parameters. Don’t misunderstand me – this does not mean they are free of parental guidance. When my children were young, they would come to ask my opinion about situations they were facing. Often I would answer, “Let’s ask God to show us what is right.” Through prayer, a child learns to trust God, depend on Him, and listen for His voice of instruction. 2. Allow follow through on decisions. I know of a father who never allowed his son to decide anything. Now an adult, the

son commented, “You know what kind of effect that had on me? I still have a problem with decision making because I grew up with my dad being the final authority for everything.” Children will make mistakes, but errors will help them learn to make right decisions. The prodigal son left home, but as soon as the money was gone, he realized his father’s love was all he desired. Some prodigals are still running, only now they are running from their heavenly Father. If this describes your situation, you need to know you can always go home. God is waiting with open arms. 3. Be accountable to God. If you come home from the grocery store and laugh about how the clerk gave you more change than you were supposed to receive, your child will make a mental note of this. Many people who think they can violate God’s authority and get away with it are dead wrong. Sooner or later, the consequences of sin catch up with them. The Bible tells us to “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Once your children realize God is their final authority, they will begin to live their lives for Him. Dr. Charles F. Stanley is the pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA and founder of In Touch Ministries. For broadcast details, visit intouchcanada.org. Article courtesy In Touch Ministries © 2015.

No Procession For This Hero A

serve: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” During His time on earth, Jesus sought out those in need and served them. He associated with society’s outcasts like tax collectors and prostitutes. He touched the lepers and made them well. He gave sight to the blind and even brought the dead back to life. But the ultimate purpose of His coming to earth was this: He came to die. God knew we have a much greater need than our physical and emotional needs. The Bible says “everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Romans 3:23). A sinless sacrifice was required to make amends for our sins. Only then can we be forgiven and reconciled to our Creator – and it’s not something we can do on our own. That’s why Jesus had to die. He was the perfect sacrifice who never sinned once, but willingly paid the penalty of sins on our behalf so we could be saved. According to the Bible, “Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the

wave of support recently flooded Edmonton after the tragic passing of Constable Daniel Woodall. The death of the 35-year-old police officer killed in the line of duty was followed by an outpouring of sympathy and support. Blue blanketed the community – from the City Hall pyramids and the High Level Bridge that were lit in blue, to the blue ribbons tied to trees, fences and light poles across Edmonton. Shortly after the tragedy, the #EPSstrong hashtag trended on social media. It all culminated with a regimental funeral procession attended by an estimated 5,000 mourners, including over 3,500 police officers and first responders from across North America and the U.K. It was a fitting way to honour and pay tribute to a fallen hero who died while protecting and serving Edmontonians. Did you know there’s another hero that sacrificed his life for others? Like Woodall, Jesus Christ sacrificed His life on behalf of others. In Matthew 20:28 in the Bible, Jesus said He left his privileged position in heaven to

hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life” (Matthew 16:21). When Jesus, the God of heaven’s armies, came to earth He knew that the battle plan would involve humiliation, betrayal, brutal torture and a shameful death on the cross –

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” an execution reserved for the worst criminals. Still, Jesus came willingly because He loves us. Jesus said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” – and on the cross, He showed what that love looked like. As the Bible explains, “for the joy set before him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus knew that His death was not the end. Three days later He rose again. Through His

resurrection, God offers everyone a chance to receive salvation, a joyful reconciliation with Him, victory over death, and the gift of eternal life. While there was no grand procession to lay His body in the grave, the Bible describes a grand procession coming when He returns for the ones who belong to Him. Dear Lord Jesus, Thank You for Your amazing sacrifice. Because of Your great love and death on the cross, You made a way for me to be forgiven and reconciled with You.
