“Life is what you make it” was Mike Minot’s philosophy, and he was determined to make it a success. This philosophy spurred him on as a young athlete competing at state and national tennis tournaments, and later as a law student pushing through all-nighters. And it paid off. At 28, Minot enjoyed the fruits of his hard-earned labour. Three years out of law school, he was excelling as a commercial litigation attorney; he had money in the bank and keys to a shiny new convertible in his hand. “I felt like I had come to a new high point in life,” Minot tells Living Light News. “The future had arrived, so to speak.” Life was about to change, however, with a simple phone call. On the other end of the line was Jim, a friend he had met while studying for the bar exam. The two had kept in touch. It was an odd call. Minot sensed his normally articulate friend struggling to tell him something. “Jim said, ‘You know, Mike, you’re in a unique time in life. You’re not only out of law school but you don’t have children, you’re not married, you don’t even have a roommate. So you have some time that you didn’t have in the past.’ ” His good friend was asking him to re-evaluate the meaning of his life – specifically by studying the Bible. Jim explained that studying Scriptures had made a difference in his life and he was asking Minot to give it a shot. Jim’s proposition baffled Michael. He wondered why Jim would even think of making such a suggestion. Jim knew very well that Michael was an atheist. Yet Jim was also a valued friend and he didn’t want to put a kink in their relationship. If nothing else, Minot thought this would be an enlightening exercise that would make him a more informed, better equipped atheist. “At the beginning I thought I might spend a few days at home in the evening casually reading a few things, maybe let a little time go by and call Jim back and say, ‘Hey, there’s nothing here for me.’ That’s what I anticipated.” Minot accepted the challenge. “I told him I would investigate things my way. faster or bigger, they would then spin off into the rest of the galaxy. “I was completely blown away by the amazing precision built into what I was seeing. But even though the amount of intellect necessary to engineer all of this seemed overwhelming, I conceded that it was statistically impossible for these many systems to be an accident.” With this revelation, what he thought would be a casual inquiry turned into a serious investigation. Further reading led him to discover the amazing complexities in animal, plant and human life. Everything – from cells to systems, species to food chains – worked together with exceptional order. Minot searched hard for answers to his biggest questions: “How likely was it that any one of these conditions I was learning about, much less all of them, could’ve appeared without help?” and “Was it more likely that these conditions were deliberately constructed or were they the results of random events?” He looked for a natural explanation for these phenomena, but ultimately came to a dead-end. Besides scientific and philosophical articles, Minot also delved into the Scriptures. He discovered that the Bible was historically accurate, but more importantly, he also read about a God who made the universe and human beings. The existence of an all-powerful Creator seemed to explain the incredible order and design imprinted in nature and people. The more he read, the more he realized that the Bible wasn’t just a series of do’s and don’ts. “It’s a story of a loving God who created us and for very specific purposes,” he says. Minot was also drawn to the character of Jesus Christ: the One who cried with the needy, laughed with children and loved the outcast.

He began his research on the Solar System. What he discovered astonished him. “I came to realize the incredible precision by how our Solar System operates. Each of the planets is located at the perfect distance while maintaining the perfect size and the perfect speed relative to the size of the sun so they each maintain their orbits around the sun. If they were slower or smaller, they would then eventually revolve into the sun; if they were

For the final part of his research, he reluctantly took up Jim’s suggestion to hear a pastor preach, despite his many prejudices against Christians. “To my utmost surprise, I found the experience startlingly beautiful,” he wrote in his recent book, The Beckoning, which explains his spiritual journey. After his church visit, he read a verse in Scripture that served as a turning point: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Reading this verse helped him realize that he was, in a sense, captive to his own philosophy. “I had to evaluate the truths on its own merits, not based upon the good or bad reputations of its spokespersons,” says Minot. “Truth stands on its own. That was the revelation that unlocked the deep prejudice I held against the church.” After resolving to just follow the evidence, the proofs – like a jigsaw puzzle – slowly fell into place. “The [scientific and Scriptural] evidence is so overwhelming and so large. I came to the realization that it’s more likely than not that I was a created being. “A few weeks after I came to the point of believing that the God described in the Scriptures is that Creator. So it was kind of a stair-step process.” Knowing that the truths he discovered could potentially turn his world upside down, Minot spent an additional week scrutinizing his findings. When he came to the same conclusion, he turned his life over to Jesus. “I asked Him to forgive me for my jaded attitude and stubborn denial of Him. I also asked Him to prepare me for what was about to happen. “I knew that when I went public with what I’d been doing and announced the conclusions I’d reached, it would evoke strong reactions.” Minot’s paradigm shift didn’t come without consequences. After telling his friends and family, Minot felt the impact almost immediately. “My entire social structure collapsed in a matter of weeks. Only my close family stood by me.” With his social calendar freed up, Minot sought out other believers and used his time to learn more about Jesus through a local fellowship. “The church became my home for learning. I was constantly reading and studying so I could know Him more,” explains Minot. He attended midweek Bible studies as well as Sunday services, trying to make up for lost time. After a couple of years, he was invited to join a prison ministry where he served for 15 years. Seeing the positive reaction from the men in jail who heard his story, Minot – now married and the father of five children – sought to reach many others with the release of his autobiography. “My hope is to be engaged in the public discussion of what is truth,” he explains. The attorney and speaker thanks God daily for the transformation He has made in his life, and that he now knows the truth. “After accepting these realizations, I completely reoriented my life toward seeking the One who supplied my very life. “No decision, before or since, made as much sense or brought me such abundant joy.”

Newsbriefs A Snapshot Of Hope VANCOUVER, B.C. – A young couple from Vancouver is helping build a school for Haitian students one photo shoot at a time. When the 2010 quake devastated Haiti, approximately 5,000 schools were destroyed including ECCA (Ecole Chretienne du Centre de L’Agneu). Helping with disaster relief, Randy Watson saw the need to rebuild the school for ECCA’s 220 students. He and his wife Jamie, a photographer, founded The School Sessions, a project that lets professional photographers donate their sitting fees to the cause. With the help of over 500 photographers from across Canada and around the world,

The School Sessions raised $43,000 in April 2015 to purchase the land on which the school will be built. Another session is planned in April 2016 to raise an additional $150,000 to build the school. Grounded In God NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI – While many see Vin Baker’s journey from being an NBA hotshot to serving espresso shots a colossal embarrassment, the retired NBA forward doesn’t see it that way. The 6-11 NBA retiree is a four-time All-Star, competed and won Olympic gold, and at one point signed a seven-year, $86-million deal with the Seattle Sonics. But his rise to fame quickly became a cautionary tale of alcoholism and financial mismanagement. Baker’s reckless lifestyle wiped out his $100 million in savings and sabotaged a very promising NBA career. “When you get some $100 million, it’s easy to forget about God.

Finding Freedom

Nine-year-old Jennifer Mitchell hid in the bush in the African nation of Uganda, praying that the rebel soldiers of the Lord’s Resistance Army wouldn’t find her. But when one of the rebels stepped on her seven-year-old sister, the little girl cried out, and Jennifer knew they were caught. Bravely, she stood up and showed herself. The

rebels captured her, but to Jennifer’s great relief, her younger sister got away. The Lord’s Resistance Army, led by Joseph Kony, terrorized the people of northern Uganda for more than 20 years. They went into villages, killing people and kidnapping children, turning them into child soldiers. For more than a year, Mitchell was forced to be one of those soldiers. The conditions were rough, to say the least. “They tied our hands together and then tied us to the person in front of us,” she

explained. “We walked from village to village, where they killed people, captured children, and looted and burned the villages. And if anyone tried to escape, they were tortured or killed.” As they traveled around Uganda, Mitchell knew they were getting close to the border of Sudan. “The rebels often sold children over the border, and I knew that if that happened to me, I would never see my people again,” she said. And that’s when Mitchell knew she had to attempt to escape. Through God’s grace, in what she describes as a true miracle, Mitchell was able to escape from the rebel group. She used her newfound freedom to work at the Uganda Jesus Village, which helps to rehabilitate war orphans and former child soldiers. “It was healing to help children who had been through the same things I’d been through,” Mitchell shared. “God used my experience to help others.” In 2008, a missions group came to the orphanage where she met Cameron Mitchell. The two began dating and they married in 2009. They now live in Stony Plain, Alta. with their three children.

They run Freedom and Fire Ministries, which raises funds to aid the African orphanage. “God is a good God,” she said. “He can take you out of any pit and change any situation. My life could have ended in Uganda, but I am still here and that

means I can still help others and make a difference.” Mitchell will be sharing her fascinating story of God’s great love at the Friends and Company women’s event called “Out of Africa.” This event will take place on Oct. 5 at the West Edmonton Christian Assembly. Denise Kroeker is the event coordinator. “Friends and Company sponsors three or four events each year,” Denise said. “Our goal is to provide a fun, encouraging night out for

women.” Kroeker attended the event for 10 years before taking over the leadership responsibilities last year. “I loved the night out and I loved that I could invite friends to it,” she said. “We all need friends, but it’s hard to find time to nurture our friendships. The Friends and Company events provide a great way to make connections with other women.” Friends and Company sponsors two dessert nights, one dinner and one brunch throughout the year. The Oct. 5 event will begin at 7 p.m. and includes a dessert, a time of fellowship, as well as Jennifer’s presentation. A car break-down and an arrest without bail aren’t what most of us would consider a blessing. But for Cheryl, serving time at Edmonton Institute for Women (EIFW) has been “a blessing in disguise.” Cheryl was raised by her father since she was two after her drugaddicted mother left the family. But she longed for a mother. She also longed for acceptance, which lured her to drugs. “I felt like I belonged there … people welcomed me and never made fun of me.” At 18, in 2004, she gave birth to her son. But she couldn’t keep him because of her addiction. “That sent me so deep into the drug world that I lost myself.” That downward spiral led to her first prison sentence.

The addiction continued upon her release. Driving back to Saskatoon she was overwhelmed with fear, knowing the temptation that lies ahead. It was then that her car broke down. In distress, she cried out to God, saying, “Lord, if You truly are real and You truly do love me, then do whatever it takes to get me sober and keep me sober.” The next day Cheryl was pulled over and arrested. At the EIFW, Cheryl went to prison chaplain Snowy Noble. She began working with two Triangles coaches through No More Leftovers (NML), a ministry founded by Sue Cavanagh to provide

encouragement to incarcerated women. Triangles involves two volunteers coaching one woman through studying and living out Biblical principles, prayer and developing a relationship with Jesus. Some coaches escort ladies that are qualified from prison to church. Joanne Zupan, Cheryl’s coach, admits she felt inadequate for the role at first. How would she handle their questions? Now, she realizes it was “a non-issue.” “We show love to them by

regularly showing up, letting them explore and question in a safe and accepting environment and encouraging them to grow in their own personal faith.” Linda Sorochan, Cheryl’s other coach, says her trust in God, plus Triangles’ training and coaching manual, gave her confidence to volunteer.

“Whether it be behavioural changes … a sense of peace – even their appearance changes,” she says. “More than one has said they feel more free in jail after accepting Christ than they did struggling with their addictions without Him, on the outside.” Cheryl’s coaches have taught her to always look to God’s Word. “I realized that every fear I had, God has a promise to take that fear away. My favourite verse is, ‘And I will wipe all the tears from their eyes, there will be no more death, crying, suffering or pain. These things of the past are gone forever’ (Revelation 21:4).” Transitioning to a halfway house means Cheryl has more freedom but also more responsibility. Due to be released later this year, she plans to complete her hairdressing apprenticeship under her current employer. Most importantly, she’s seeking to reunite with her son. “I have truly accepted who I used to be and come to a clear realization that I never want to be that person again. I have a support system out here and a real group of people I can call my friends.” “The Lord heard me ... I am a Christian who finally found my way.”

Cavanagh began No More Leftovers over four years ago as Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:36 spoke deeply to her: “I was in prison and you came to Me.”

“I knew someone who had been [in prison]. No one visited her and the only thing that comforted her was body lotion,” Cavanagh explains. “That never left me.” NML holds a service in prison quarterly, where new residents are given a care package of new products including body wash, lotion, shampoo, lip balm, deodorant and a Bible. “People have developed such inaccurate assumptions [from TV] of what prison is like. These are ladies from all walks of life who could use our help, not ‘inmates’,” Cavanagh says. For Zupan, seeing the change in these women is the most rewarding part of coaching.

Argo’s Harris Armed with Faith by Crystal Kupper As a kid growing up in Waldo, Ohio – population 338 – Trevor Harris didn’t particularly enjoy the game of football. Still, when school essays asked his life’s dream, he always wrote,

coach Scott Milanovich told The Star. “Trevor is an easy guy to like. He’s humble, he’s God-fearing. He’s the kind of kid you want your daughter to marry. It’s going to be hard not to pull for him.” Fans certainly pull for him, but parents of daughters, don’t get any ideas: Harris’ in-laws are already lined up. After donning a mascot costume in May to ask for his high school sweetheart Kalie Denton’s hand, a wedding date is set for December 19, 2015.

“I happen to play football, but I am a child of God.”

In his first season as a starter, Toronto Argonauts QB Trevor Harris is proving himself to be a candidate for CFL’s most outstanding player.

“Professional Athlete.” Most people figured it would never happen. As a wandering professional football player – first as an undrafted free agent for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, then stops in the Arena Football League and United Football League, next and currently as a quarterback with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts since 2012 – the 29-yearold has received several enticing offers over the years. To not play football. “Football has always been a God-thing,” Harris tells Living Light News. “I’ve been close to being done professionally several times; I’ve had other job offers I really wanted.” So what’s that former ambivalent athlete doing on the field today? Winning, that’s what. In his three years as backup to former MVP Ricky Ray, he saw virtually no action. However when Ray went down with a serious injury that required surgery, Harris has excelled leading the Argos to an impressive 6-3 record. The league noted his 74.8 passing percentage for 1,177 yards with a league-best 11 TDs and just four interceptions, naming him their Player of the Month for July. Entering Week 11, Harris had a league-leading 74.4 percent passing completion average for 2,453 yards and 19 touchdowns. At one point he topped the CFL in touchdowns, completions, completion percentage and 300-yard passing games. “Fans have always loved the backup quarterback,” Argonauts head

With a fiancée and a professional contract, one could say the 6-3, 212-pound Harris has proved the naysayers wrong. “[Doubt and negativity] fuel my fire,” he says. “It’s one of those things you embrace.” So, too, is the Harris family’s love for the pigskin. Tom Harris, Trevor’s father, was a prep football coach. Cody, the youngest Harris, quarterbacked for Edinboro University, a Division II school in Pennsylvania – the same university where his big brother demolished every school single game, single season and career passing record in attempts, completions and yards by his 2009 graduation. Earlier this year, Ryan Maniaci, Harris’ cousin, committed his college years to Edinboro – as a quarterback, of course. Harris simply says, “We’re a football family.” Before the field, however, comes their faith. Raised with three siblings as Catholics — besides Cody, older sisters Autumn and Chantress are in nursing and education — Harris always knew about God. Still, he calls his younger self “a game-day Christian.” “If it was game day, I’d think, ‘Don’t say any swear words!’ ” Harris says. “I didn’t quite understand what being a Christian meant.” That changed when he began attending a collegiate Bible study at Edinboro. By the time Harris hit 22 or 23, his relationship with Christ had vaulted “to another level.”

“[The leaders] taught me what it meant to be a Christian,” Harris says. “You become a man in college and take ownership of your decisions. I realized Christ is most important in my life. I happen to play football, but I am a child of God.” A child who still loves time with his heavenly Daddy – Harris regularly attends nondenominational Toronto team chapels, even on the road, and occasionally speaks to studentathletes at his alma mater about faith. “Anything we can do to grow the Kingdom of God is what it’s about,” he says. “If I can glorify God through football, then that’s great.” With three-time Grey Cup winner Ray on the bench with a torn, slowhealing rotator cuff (check), Harris is capitalizing on his time as the Argos’ leader. After all, despite leading his team to the top power ranking at July’s end, it might be temporary. Ray earns five times the average CFL salary for a reason and is expected to return in September. “I’m grateful for every day to play football. Not everyone has the opportunity to be on a roster, to play even a few weeks!” Harris says. “I’m grateful to play this week, to be safe from injury, to count my blessings every day.” He is certainly making those days count. As of Sept. 1, the QB completed 215 passes – better than any other CFL quarterback. Of his 19 end-zone trips, four came in one early-July contest in an overtime win against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, while he engineered a 21-point comeback against the B.C. Lions less than three weeks later. “I want to win the East Division and be the best QB I can be for this organization,” Harris says, “but mainly, I want to glorify God in everything I do.” That includes his future football coaching plans and off time, when Harris enjoys taking missions trips – “I try for one per year,” he says – to the Dominican Republic. He builds houses there, not championships, but says it’s all Christ “[expressing] Himself through me.” “My time with Jesus on game day is no more important than not on game day,” he says. “I pray every day that God would intercede in my life. I want everything I do to reflect that.”

We’re No Better Than The Greeks! W

ho would have thought that the beautiful Grecian island of Zakynthos – with its clear blue waters and idyllic white-sand beaches – was hiding such an ugly secret? The earthly paradise was the unlikely setting for a scam that earned the moniker “Island of the Blind.” In a bold deception that epitomizes the country’s economic downfall, 498 sighted people claimed to be blind in order to receive a bimonthly government stipend of €724 (over CAD $1,000) plus a discount on utility bills. The audacious scam which continued for years was only busted in 2011 when one of the supposedly blind residents was found driving around the island in his Porsche. Hatched by a powerful politician and an opthalmologist, the ruse reportedly cost Greece a hefty €9 million (almost CAD $14 million). And according to James Angelos, a journalist and second generation Greek American, this is just the tip of the iceberg. His book The Full Catastrophe: Travels Among The New Greek Ruins reveals widespread corruption ranging from people not registering their parents’ deaths to receive pension cheques to wealthy doctors and lawyers who own lavish mansions with pools – yet are paupers based on income

tax returns. North Americans aren’t much better when it comes to lying and cheating. In Canada, under-the-table jobs have created an underground economy worth an estimated $35 billion. Deception is also rife in the workplace. According to a 2011 study, employee theft and workplace fraud is costing small and mid-sized companies a collosal $3.2 billion per year. “What we have is the mentality that rules are made to be broken,” Greek restaurateur Spartakos Delianis recently told Globe and Mail columnist Matthew Fisher. Delianis cited the example of how few motorcyclists in Zakynthos follow the helmet laws – which carry a €350 fine – because the law is rarely enforced. While Delianis was referring to his fellow Greeks, the rationale behind rebellious behaviour is the same whether in Greece or here at home. People are always trying to push the envelope on what they think they can get away with. A person may say it’s harmless to cheat on taxes. Or that it’s okay to pretend you’re blind so you can score some

spending money. Hey, everybody else is doing it, so what’s the big deal? When a person spurns the law, there are consequences. The Greek islanders thought they could get away with scamming the government – especially with a politician behind the scheme – but it was only a matter of time before they were ordered to pay up for brazenly flouting the law. Granted, many people have broken the law and seem to have gotten away with it. However, there will come a day when we’ll all stand accountable before God. Will anyone have lived a spotless life? Nope. Everyone

forgiven, we need to admit we’ve messed up and turn from our deceitful ways. “But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” (1 John 1:9). God’s offer to you is on the table. Are you ready to accept it? Say this prayer from your heart. Dear God, I thank You for giving me a way out of my spiritual bankruptcy. Similarly, our purpose is to love one another, to share with others.” Don’t blame Go for sounding slightly Disney — the star recently joined forces with the animation giant by singing “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” for the new live-action movie Cinderella. For now, however, Go is concentrating on her role in the Cameron Mackintosh-produced play that boasts 70 million viewers in 44 countries and 22 languages. “I thought I was going to stay in London for just a year and do Miss Saigon, ” she says. “Now I’m staying for another year. I’m going to say, ‘God, lead me wherever.’ ” He has led her to living alone halfway across the world from her family, but Go accepts that. “I try to be in the Word every day, even when I’m tired,” she says. “I read the Bible even when I’m weary or homesick. She gingerly steps on stage, face downcast, 19th century skirts swishing. Her petite five-foot-two frame paired against the French Revolution’s oppression seems almost fragile. But when Rachelle Ann Go powerfully sings the classic “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables, she’s doing more than dazzling a packed West End London theatre celebrating 30 straight years of the world’s longest-running musical. The native Filipina is declaring personal history — with a Godinspired twist. “It’s just crazy because all my prayers are coming true,” Go tells Living Light News. “Prayers are really powerful. God put this desire in my heart to sing. So I thought, I’m going to start praying for this dream of mine, and it just happened!” Well, not quite. First came years of music school and vocal coaching from her father in the Philippines, starting at age six — “I don’t really have proper training, just my dad, rehearsing every day after school at home,” she admits — then her first local singing competition victory at age nine. After that came more contests, including time on TV. When Go won Viva Television’s Search For A Star in 2004, offers for contracts, concerts and albums followed. That same year, she released her debut album that included the singles “Love of My Life,” a remake of “Don’t Cry Out Loud” and a cover of Selena’s “Dreaming of You.” The next few years found Go co-hosting Search For A Star, releasing a total of seven albums (some reaching gold and platinum status) and touring the world. With her big pipes and obvious love for her country, Go attained celebrity status in the Philippines, leading to over two million followers on Twitter and 1.9 million Facebook fans. The 29-year-old gives credit to her mother, a singer and band member, and father, a musician. “I have a great family,” she says, including two younger brothers and a sister. “My parents are amazing.” The whole clan cheered her on as she dove into musical theatre in 2011, winning Best

From there, she played Jane in Tarzan at a playhouse in Pasig City, a suburb of Manila and her birthplace. Europe came calling, however, and in 2014, Go jumped the pond by accepting the lead role of Gigi Van Tranh in Miss Saigon at London’s Prince Edward Theatre. Speaking from the United Kingdom’s capital, Go admits the transition from the Philippines to England was difficult. “I never imagined living alone in a different country,” she says. “I grew up with my family and friends around me, so it was total culture shock!” Go also had to adjust to a faster pace — and conquer some more mundane issues. “I didn’t know anything about life, I didn’t know how to cook,” she says. “Everyone here is so fast. Everyday life is so busy.” Thankfully, Go has her personal relationship with Jesus Christ to rely on. Raised in a nominally Catholic family — “We’d usually go to church if there was a birthday or on holidays,” she says — the singer was hesitant at a friend’s invitation to attend an evangelical Christian church, but went anyways. “The message hit me, and I believe God really spoke to me,” Go says. “I started crying.” Ever since Go surrendered her life to Jesus Christ eight years ago, her faith has influenced her career. She frequently posts Scriptural references, for example, or pictures of her praying before assuming a role. “A lot of people get inspired by faith, but some are like, ‘I’m going to stop following you because you believe in Jesus,” she says. “But this is my purpose. God gave me this talent and blessing to share with people.” The West End, one of the world’s premiere musical theatre districts, is perfectly fine with that attitude. Last year, the Broadway World West End Awards gave her its Best Featured Actress honour for her Miss Saigon role. In 2015, the WhatsOnStage Awards dubbed her Best Supporting Actress for the same. “I’ve learned a lot about myself [in England],” Go says. “I’ve been meeting a lot of non-

Living Light News - September/October 2015 ARYN MICHELLE Depth arynmichelle.com Review by Lindsay Williams Texas-native Aryn Michelle’s latest album, Depth, showcases the versatility of this Berklee College of Music alum. Aryn’s state residence and preacher’s kid upbringing merge to form her saccharine and, at times, twangy vocals reminiscent of songstress Jewel. There’s a definitive Americana bent to the project, which includes duets with singer/songwriter Derek Webb and fellow Immerse participant Sean Carter. “Road to Heaven” is a dreamy, old-world country play on words with a dash of sass, belying Aryn’s seriousness found throughout the album. Other tracks lean more ethereal, like her take on the timeless “Doxology” and opening cut “Narrow Gate.” Line after line is culled directly from Scripture, especially “Romans 12.” Closing track “The Sky Is Falling” is a soaring, theatrical ballad, albeit in an extremely high key. Depth unveils an interesting mix of eclectic musical styles. Yet, in order for Aryn to carve out a niche for herself long-term, choosing one musical direction – preferably a mix of country-flavoured singer-songwriter fare – would serve her undoubtedly well. SIDEWALK PROPHETS Something Different sidewalkprophets.com Review by Lindsay Williams After a three-year wait, Sidewalk Prophets returns with 14 original cuts with Something Different. Fitting, considering the project’s musical diversity. Driving lead single “Prodigal” kicks off the set, giving listeners a preview of what’s to come. Except for a few ballads, the vast majority of Something Different inflates the band’s radio-friendly pop up to arena-sized rock. Lead singer Dave Frey performs some impressive vocal runs on the Seth Mosley produced offering. The full-throttle energy rarely lets up; yet theologically sound lyrics ride just below the mirage of electric guitar riffs. However, it’s the last two cuts that prove most surprising. “Closer” is a throwback-flavoured track featuring gospel

JukeBox music sensation Tamela Mann, an unexpected duet partner for Frey. Moreover, the sparse “Homeless Heart” is the real prize of the album. The song beautifully captures Frey’s crisp vocals and the band’s heartfelt lyrical aptitude. Something Different more than lives up to its name, delivering a plethora of musical styles and pushing the boundaries of Adult Contemporary music. JJ HELLER Sound Of A Living Heart jjheller.com Review by Lindsay Williams Indie darling JJ Heller has long been known as an intelligent faith-based singer/songwriter whose folk-inspired melodies are as warm as a tight embrace. With Sound of a Living Heart, Heller steps out with a pop-laden album. While the 11 tracks remain true to Heller’s artful and vulnerable lyrical prowess, musically, the songs contain a sheen that previous releases have shied away from. From the hearth and home coziness of “Meant To Be” to the resolution-filled “This Year (Happy New Year),” Heller weaves the beauty and truth of daily life into every note. On story song “Father-Daughter Dance,” a duet with Sanctus Real’s Matt Hammitt, she unfolds the tale of a young girl who helps her incarcerated father become a better man. Other songs, like “The Well” and “Scarlet Thread,” speak more fully to Heller’s faith journey. Yet it’s not her theological insight that draws in listeners; it’s the charming way she turns a phrase. While these songs are more commercially accessible than her previous fare, there’s plenty of sincerity to make Heller feel like the earnest girl next door that she’s always been. JOSH WILSON That Was Then, This Is Now joshwilsonmusic.com Review by Josh McConnell Josh Wilson’s many talents – playing guitar, drums, piano, ukulele and mandolin besides singing – have earned him various accolades since debuting on Sparrow Records in 2008. Besides multiple releases, EPs and Christmas albums, Wilson even starred in a viral YouTube video cheering

people up with a song during an airport delay. Wilson’s latest effort, That Was Then, This Is Now, is an 11-track disc about reinvention and new beginnings. The album kicks off with back-to-back upbeat tunes (“This Is The Day” and the title track) that could easily find their way on radio, while “Blown Away” continues the trend later on. Songs are often driven by the rhythmic section, with “House Divided” sounding oddly similar to OneRepublic’s “Love Runs Out.” Ballads such as “Don’t Let Go” are tender, reflective and worshipful. One of the standout tracks is the instrumental “Ode To Joy,” where Wilson’s guitar genius shines the most. While the lyrics are more conversational as opposed to poetic, the entire package is enjoyable thanks to Wilson’s musical prowess. If you’re looking for a new pop-worship disc, consider That Was Then, This Is Now. REND COLLECTIVE As Family We Go rendcollective.com Review by Josh McConnell Many North American groups these days pull musical influences from European artists, and unfortunately the true imports can be lost in the mix. Take Rend Collective, for example. Their new album As Family We Go is an amalgamation of multiple genres, but at its core is an indie-folk sound in the vein of Mumford & Sons. Songs such as “Celebrate” or “Free As A Bird” are as foot-stomping as they come, so you’d think they were inspired by Mumford’s influences when in reality they are just being their Irish selves. The other half of the disc is a bit disorienting as it’s filled with slow ballads that sound like a completely different band. The grittier vocals and aggressively-strumming acoustic guitars are replaced with the typical North American, slickly-produced pop-worship tunes. You’re getting two different albums in one. But it’s the Mumford-sounding, indie-folk tracks that keep you coming back. If you’re looking for some highenergy tracks that feature worshipful lyrics, check out As Family We Go.

by Sarah Chestnutt and Lindsey Peng The weather may be getting cooler, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to bundle up for winter — it just means it’s the perfect time to hit the road. And what better road to hit than one where it’s all about the journey? On the Oregon Coast, plan your own trip as you cruise down Highway 101. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and unique sights on the other, it’s a highway unlike any other. Stretching from the Columbia River to the California coast, make your journey as long or as short as you like, stopping at the different towns and cities you come across before heading your way back up the coastline. Of course, you can drive to Oregon, but if you’re eager to get cruising, fly into Portland or Seattle and rent a car. The weather may be cooler, but the traffic will be much lighter — especially at the end of September and into October. Going in October often means cheaper prices, too, as many attractions and accommodations will be on an offseason pricing schedule. The first city you’ll discover is Astoria. About two hours from Portland, it’s the northernmost city on the drive, as well as the oldest U.S. settlement west of Mississippi. With that in mind, take in the Columbia River Maritime Museum for an engaging look at the area’s seagoing past. Climb up the 164 steps of the Astoria Column ($2 for parking) to enjoy a panoramic view. You can also buy a toy balsa wood airplane and launch it from the breezy deck! When you’ve had your fill of Astoria, fill

the gas tank and head to Cannon Beach. You’ll probably spot the must-see stop long before you get there — Haystack Rock is a huge distinct outcropping rising up out of the ocean near shore. Time your visit for low tide and watch your step as you explore tide pools teeming with ocean life. Then look to the skies for sea birds, including cormorants and puffins. The next place on the map (or GPS) is Tillamook, where you’ll find what locals consider to be the top attraction on the coast. The Tillamook Cheese Factory has tasting tours known across the state. For those wanting a less “cheesy” stop, historic downtown Tilamook has great shopping to hit. You’ll find evidence of the strong artisan community with locally made products that would make fantastic gifts. The journey doesn’t stop there, though. On Oct. 10-11, catch the annual Lincoln Fall Kite Festival. Learn how to make them, or just sit back and watch the colourful show kites adorn the sky. It may not be swimsuit weather, but the sandy beaches are still calling. Pacific City’s Green Acres Beach and Trail Rides has horseback riding on the beach. After mid-October, Lincoln City’s beaches are the place to play Finders Keepers. Glass floats (spheres of hand blown glass) are placed on the beach by local artists to be kept by whoever finds them. A call to Visitor’s Services (1-800-452-2151) registers the float and you’ll receive info on the artist. How’s that for a souvenir? Further down the coast, the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport has events for the whole family, including a handshake with

an octopus (well, as close to a handshake as you can get with an animal with no hands). Discover just what lives below in the ocean you’ve been taking photos of. AMA members can get a discount. When the beaches turn into dunes, you’re probably close to Florence and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Either hike a trail or rent a dune buggy for an exhilarating ride up and down the dunes. For an attraction you’ll hear before you see it, check out Sea Lion Caves. There’s nothing like the noise coming from hundreds of wild sea lions, some weighing more than 1,200 pounds. A high-speed elevator takes spectators to an observation deck overseeing their year-round home. When you need to stretch your legs and get a break from the car games going on in the backseat (I Spy, anyone?), take your pick of places to grab a bite or spend the night. Small restaurants and cafes along the coast give you a real taste of the community. With the ocean so close, be sure to stop at a seafood restaurant or two (or more ...). A grassroots team is taking prayer to new heights

Your brow is perspiring and your legs are aching, but you hardly feel it surrounded by the cool lush vegetation and the cacophony of birdsong. Reaching the peak at 1,028 feet, you see a flash of yellow â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a tropical bird? Or maybe an exotic flower? A few mores steps and you see â&#x20AC;Ś a bright yellow toolbox? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve discovered the work of Angela Tomiye, 30, creator of We Are Prayer Box, a grassroots prayer group she began after she felt God clearly showing her this is what He wanted her to do. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I asked God one question silently,â&#x20AC;? she says, â&#x20AC;&#x153; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What purpose would this serve?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;? Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s answer was that while everyone needs prayer, not all are willing to go to the traditional places, like church, to receive it. Knowing she wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be able to ignore what she had heard, Tomiye found her grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old toolbox, spray painted it yellow, wrote â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prayer Boxâ&#x20AC;? in big bold letters across the front, and included some paper and a few pencils inside. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The following day I carried the box all the way to the top of Koko Head trail in Honolulu,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I saw a tree near the lookout and felt a complete peace about leaving the box in it. Every week, a friend or I will check on it to retrieve the prayer requests, then a group of us will gather and pray.â&#x20AC;? Over time and as word of the box spread, the amount of prayer requests increased, and continues to grow. Every time Tomiyeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s group makes the arduous climb (1,048 steps) to check on it there are full-page letters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even quick notes dashed on food wrappers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from people who hiked with the hope of receiving answered prayer. On the flip side, there have been many who have come forward to support Tomiye through prayer, finances, and even offering up their time and talent for the cause. In fact, the reason she called it â&#x20AC;&#x153;We Are Prayer Boxâ&#x20AC;? and not just â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prayer Boxâ&#x20AC;? is because she wants the doors to be open for anyone with a heart to get involved. Having just returned home to Hawaii from a trip planting new prayer boxes on the U.S. West Coast, she says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love seeing how beautifully the journey of We Are Prayer Box has unfolded. We placed boxes in Washington, Oregon and California. My dream is to have at least one prayer box in each state across the country.â&#x20AC;? Social media has been a powerful tool in spreading the story of We Are Prayer Box. They strive to use it to enlighten others, empower, encourage, and most of all to shine Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s light in a way that most people wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect. For instance, We Are Prayer Box posts photos of prayer requests on their Instagram page to encourage people to pray for the anonymous hikers who wrote the notes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We love seeing people tag their friends on photos that could encourage them,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It tells us that they are relating to the prayers. Hopefully the prayers we post can bring some peace and healing to those

inconsolable heart. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I attended a Friday night church service and felt Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presence wash over me,â&#x20AC;? she says.â&#x20AC;&#x153;I cried that night uncontrollably, and felt a peace like I had never known.â&#x20AC;? While attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, Tomiye had great taste but a small budget. She started searching thrift stores for vintage clothing and often found vintage gowns at $5 a piece. She took the gowns in for alterations and as she wore those dresses, she received countless compliments. Compliments soon led to customers and now her own vintage clothing shop in Honolulu called Love at Dawn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The exact place that I am in life is because of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s faithfulness and answered prayers,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taken me a long time to realize that just because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the results we want through prayer doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean God isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t at work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He hears everything that we say to Him, He takes every request to heart, but He is also the only one who knows the full picture. As long as I remind myself of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart for me, I can rest peacefully knowing Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll grant me the desires of my heart or something even better.â&#x20AC;? My wife thought about this, then said, “That’s because we have to repeat everything we say.” s Phil Callaway “What was that?” I asked. It might shock you to hear that we do not have the perfect marriage. There are times in our marriage that I’ve been critical and demanding. And Ramona admits that she lacked the courage to confront me for years. She needed something to spur her on. And her inspiration, oddly enough, came from our 10-pound Shih Tzu Maltese pup, Mojo. One morning, my friend James showed up on my porch with his new dog Ben. It was the first meeting for our two dogs. My little hound Mojo was startled at first. She yipped, then lunged at Ben. Now Ben was a Bernese mountain dog, a docile, good-natured breed, with a head the size of Mojo’s body. My wife arrived about then, thinking what I was thinking: one of these dogs is predator, the other prey. But no director would ever put a tiny dog in the role of predator. Mojo bared her fangs and barked wildly. Ben’s already low bushy tail fell even lower.

I don’t care if you’re right. Your words hurt. And so it was – perhaps by coincidence – that a few days later, my wife lunged at me. I live in a world of words. I’m constantly reading, writing, speaking publicly. Tossing words in the air, hoping they land in the right spots. Not Ramona. She struggles for the right words. As the youngest of seven, her role was silence. When she said, “Pass the salt,” she said it 11 times to be heard. Our psychologist friend Kevin Leman dragged us onto a stage once to ask about our marriage, and Ramona froze, horrified. I, on the other hand, was in my element. With Kevin talking about birth order, I confessed that we were both the youngest in our families, which according to psychologists isn’t a great match. “The babies have trouble making decisions,” he said. “Years ago I was indecisive,” I smiled, “today I’m not so sure.” As you might guess, I sometimes speak too much at home too. A few days after the doggy introductions, Ramona and I argued. Once again, I said too much, arguing the merits of my point of view. She was silent. And then she lunged, punching me on the shoulder. This was no gentle love tap; it was a direct hit containing the force of the words she wished she could use. I deserved every ounce of it. And I was speechless. “You can argue your way out of anything,” she said, “I don’t care if you’re right … your words hurt.” If that isn’t a turning point in a guy’s marriage, there’s no hope for him. I hung my head. “I’m sorry,” I said. In Proverbs 29:20, wise king Solomon writes, “Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” Ouch. I’m so thankful for the grace God has shown me. Ask my wife and she’ll tell you I’m learning to listen more, and consider things from her point of view. So I hope you’ll join me in being quick to listen and slow to speak. After all, I’ve learned that 87 percent of the time, the best way to save face, is to keep the bottom half of it shut. When Adversity Strikes by Dr. Charles F. Stanley The sudden sting of disappointment – we all know the feeling. Life appears to be going well; then with little or no warning, adversity strikes. Our hearts are challenged to be strong and believe in what seems to be impossible at the moment. Shock comes as a protector, numbing us to the immediate impact of reality. Finally, we are forced to face our circumstances and the fact that adversity has struck. We may be tempted to think that God has left us alone to sort through the aftermath of the storm. We wonder: “He is God; couldn’t He have stopped this from happening?” Whenever adversity comes, remember God is in it with you. He has promised never to leave or abandon you (Hebrews 13:5b). When news of a loved one’s death reaches your ears, God has the foreknowledge of its coming. The psalmist writes: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2). Adversity was born at the fall of man, and it will remain until God establishes a new heaven and earth. Because of this, it is important for us to understand that God is not the author of pain or suffering. We live with the natural consequences of our fallen state. But it is equally important for us to realize that God has a plan and purpose for the pain we suffer. It is in this very atmosphere that He brings victory over heartache, discouragement, and the deepest depression. Pain, disappointment, and trial drive us to the Lord and to the Cross where we discover our personal need for a Saviour, not just for our soul’s salvation but for the entire span of life. We are struck with a defining thought: “We need God. We need His fellowship and His presence or we will collapse.” An older saint helps us understand the principle of

He allows adversity to touch our lives, and Peter tells us it’s to refine our faith: “In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6-7). None of us is immune to adversity’s attacks, and no one enjoys its company. However, if you’re a Christ follower, you’re not left defenseless and weak. We have a strong Advocate (1 John 2:1) who comes to our aid and stands ready to protect and defend us. In Psalm 18, King David exalts God’s ability to provide victorious strength: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress

Just as torches burn most brightly when swung to and fro; just as the juniper plant smells sweetest when flung into the flames; so the richest qualities of a Christian often come out under the north wind of suffering and adversity. Bruised hearts often emit the fragrance that God loveth to smell.” What is God’s goal in adversity? His basic objective is to draw us closer to Himself. He does not initiate pain or sorrow, but He uses these to teach us about His love and faithfulness. Later, there will be time enough to ask God to show you what you can learn from the pain you have suffered. God always has something in mind when He allows us to face difficulty. He has a plan, a purpose, and a goal not just for this situation alone but for

your entire life. In times of difficulty, God is your immovable strength (Proverbs 18:10). What are you to do when adversity strikes? In the book of Hebrews, God encourages us by saying, “Do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised (10:3536) When adversity strikes, the first thing we should do is to turn to God. The second step is to affirm our commitment to Him that we will remain focused on Him and not on our circumstances. People often ask, “What is the quickest way through seasons of adversity?” Many times there just is not a quick solution to the trials we face. However, there is one sure way through the difficulties of life and that is through obedience and surrender of selfish feelings and desires. Adversity has a way of pushing us beyond ourselves where we find God waiting to gather us in His arms. It also stirs us to pray like nothing else can. And it is in prayer that we find shelter from the storms of life. Held under the canopy of God’s presence, we discover a sense of security and hope that we thought had evaded us. Never forget that God knows the future. He understands the advantage of adversity and how it can be used to strengthen your faith, refine your hope, and settle your heart into a place of contentment and trust. Without times of adversity, you would miss the powerful experience of God walking with you through the valley times of life. Dr. Charles F.
