Reasons to adopt Monochromatic Style! by Priya Shah

I

t’s a new year. Time to throw the guards away and try something you’ve never tried before. It’s time to adopt Monochromatic style. Often, I ask my clients to implement the same and they go like “mono-what-chrome” What does that mean? Mono means one/single and chrome means color/hue. Picking one color out of the 12 colors in the color wheel and repeating it in various tints, shades and tones is monochromatic style. Let us pick up the color red. Now to wear red in monochromatic style, we can use: cherry, rose, crimson, scarlet, blush, mahogany, ruby, apple, wine, blood, brick, candy and garnet to name a few. Whichever color you use, make sure, the balance of tints, tones and shades is done well. The key is to create a visually appealing look where each color cohesively works together and not against each other. You would be surprised to see how many variations, both bright and neutral can be created from just one color. Monochrome also refers to a basic;

10

yet bold black and white style.

incorporate this style in your wardrobe:-

A common misconception to this style is wearing a blue trouser with the same blue blouse along with same color bag and shoes too. Of course, this makes one look like a crayon! So, there are few things you need to take in account while using this style - fabric, texture, print,

1. It is an eternal style: Most people are fans of wearing different colors not knowing that a monochrome outfit turns out to be classier than any other combinations. Very few people experiment with this style, reason being failure to carry it off. But once you master this art, it can be your signature style especially on your nonfashionable/dull days. This is an eternal style which came into fashion in 1960’s and keeps coming back every now and then. It’s considered to convey the most polished look and is considered very sophisticated as it usually creates a calming effect.

balance and adding an unexpected touch. Using these elements will give liveliness to the outfit. So, here are few reasons why you need to

February 2016 | Volume1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

2. Less is more: “Black comprises everything. So does white. They possess absolute beauty: they are in perfect harmony.” —Coco Chanel. If you are not confident about which color to pick & experiment; Monochrome consists of all black and white outfits as well. This is good to begin with. As they say, “Less is more,” that’s power of black and white.

3. Works for any Occasion: In the 17th century, monochromatic style was associated solely with formal wear but in today’s time, all the rules have been altered. Now a day, this style can be worn to any occasion – street style, clubbing, weddings, brunch date, family lunch and of course, even at work. It works equally well everywhere. Just the balance of tints, tones, and shades has to be right. 4. Flatters every body type: Along with creating visual interest in any outfit, monochromatic style also creates illusion of length, which makes one look sleek and tall. It flatters all body types. If you feel you are too short and you always wished to be taller or slimmer, then this is it folks! 5. Highlights effortlessly: Imagine wearing all black and wearing yellow strappy sandals (shown in the picture.) Can you imagine the sandals being highlighted with so much ease? Similarly if you want to highlight your bag, neckpiece, waistline, shoes – this is the best style to carry. 6. Anyone can carry it off: Going back to history, fashion designers were inspired by black and white narrow suit of men for this style but in today’s day, men and women both are able to pull it off with ease. The vast contrast between black and white speaks more of power and authority rather than masculinity or feminism. This chic, elegant style suits everyone!

Black comprises everything. So does white. They possess absolute beauty: they are in perfect harmony

Your finances before and after the “I do...”

A

re you gearing up for a loved ones wedding? Are you confused with what you should do if your son or daughter is getting married or if it’s your friend’s wedding? Simply planning for the wedding as a grand event to attend is not enough. How financially ready you are for this is also an important question to ask yourself.

Friend’s Wedding: If your friend is about to get married, you may want to plan a vacation as a high value gift with him/her. You need to plan for this in advance because last minute planning may turn out to be an expensive affair. Even if you have only 6-12 months in hand you can plan for it. For an individual who is salaried, setting aside a fixed sum of money, through a bank recurring deposits or an ultra short or liquid fund would be ideal.

For a parent whose child’s wedding needs to be planned:

Whilst in many parts of India, planning for this goal starts well in advance, there is a need for structured planning around it. With the trend of destination weddings setting in, it’s important to start planning for this goal well in advance. sum of money. Equity is a good choice from along term perspective. Since one must not keep all eggs in one basket it’s better to chart out an asset allocation and stick to it without getting carried away by a host of new and apparently high return investment choices that you may learn about from various sources like the media, a friend or an agent.

The starting point should be to know the cost as of today, for the kind of wedding you would want to plan for You will then need to cover for inflation, so that costs of today are appropriately estimated to the number of years to goal. It’s important to review your investment choices at least annually. You must also rebalance your portfolio when required. FALL IN LOVE WITH UR SKIN THIS

VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, each one of us wants to look the best. So here are a few simple tips which will help you fall in love with your skin this season. START your day with the basic daily care routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising the skin. Use a cleanser and toner according to your type of skin. Use a water based moisturiser which is lighter in texture and one which does not block the pores if you have an oily or acne prone skin. Use a good moisturising cream or lotion if you have dry skin.

acne or a very sensitive skin. NOURISH your skin with some homemade packs to maintain the glow on your skin. Mash some papaya with curd and add a few drops of orange juice. Apply this pack for 15 minutes. This contains antioxidants like Vitamin A and C which will help rejuvenate your skin. Apply a fresh pack, which contains mashed banana and avocado. Add a few drops of honey and raw milk to it. This is especially good for dry skin, as it will help hydrate it.

PROTECT your skin by using a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or 30. Do remember to re-apply the sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours to protect your skin at all times.

EXFOLIATE the hands and feet with pack made of oats and crushed strawberry. This works like a mild exfoliating scrub and also rejuvenates the skin making it look younger.

BRIGHTEN your skin tone by using lotions or serums with active ingredients like vitamin C, arbutin or licorice on a daily basis.

REPLENISH your skin at night by using a good moisturising lotion or night cream according to your skin type. You could also opt for moisturisers, which contain active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, Vitamin A and Vitamin C derivatives.

EXFOLIATE your skin with mild scrubs or gentle exfoliating agents once a week. Avoid using a scrub if you have active

REJUVENATE your skin with fruit or party peels, which give an instant boost and glow to the skin. These can be done a day prior to any important party or event that you attend as it does not have any downtime. CORRECT your skin if you suffer from any skin issues or problems like acne, acne scars or pigmentation under proper guidance of a Dermatologist. The latest trends nowadays are medifacials or mediclean ups, which help correct the skin and give a longer lasting glow.

So GIFT yourself healthy glowing skin this valentine.

Getting Started on Getting Pregnant by Dr. Lily Keswani, MD, DGO, Integrative Medicine

IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING HAVING A BABY, YOU PROBABLY HAVE WONDERED WHAT YOU CAN DO TO ENSURE A HEALTHY PREGNANCY. FIND THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS HERE. Pregnancy Diet and Nutrients A healthy pregnancy diet will promote your baby’s growth and development. The basic principles of healthy eating remain the same — get plenty of vegetables, protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. However, a few nutrients in a pregnancy diet deserve special attention. Here’s what tops the list. Folate and folic acid - prevent birth defects Folate is a B vitamin that helps prevent neural tube defects, serious abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord. How much: 800 micrograms of folic acid a day before conception and throughout pregnancy. Good sources: Leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, and dried beans and peas. Omega 3 essential fatty acids for baby’s brain I can’t stress enough on how crucial this ingredient is for both, a healthy pregnancy, and your baby’s brain development. Omega-3 fatty acids are brain food and are vital for both brain and early visual development of the baby. They reduce the risk of allergies in infants, help prevent pre-term delivery, lower the risk of high BP and may optimise birth weight. Omega-3 decreases the mother’s risk for postnatal depression and helps in the treatment of infertility. Good sources: Fatty fish such as salmon. How much: 300 mg DHA daily. This should be continued before and

22

throughout pregnancy as well as during feeding. Protein — Promotes growth Protein is crucial for your baby’s growth, especially during the second and third trimesters. How much you need: 1-1.5grams/kg body weight, per day. Good sources: Meat, poultry, fish and eggs. Vegetarian options include dried beans and peas, tofu, dairy products, and peanut butter. Calcium - strengthens bones You and your baby need calcium for strong bones and teeth. Calcium also helps your circulatory, muscular and nervous systems run normally. How much: 1,000 – 1500mg/day. Good sources: Dairy products are the best absorbed sources of calcium. Nondairy sources include small fish and spinach. Vitamin D — Promotes bone strength Vitamin D also helps build your baby’s bones and teeth, brain development and general growth. I usually recommend 60,000IU once a week. Iron — Prevents anaemia If you don’t get enough iron, the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight might be higher. How much you need: 30mg/day. Good sources: Red meat, poultry and fish, also beans and vegetables.

Thyroid disorders Hypothyroidism in the mother can cause lower IQ, developmental delays and impaired mental development in the child. It is also linked to infertility or repeated pregnancy loss. Check levels frequently and increase dosage of medication. Testing for blood groups in both parents (Rh incompatibility) and for inherited diseases (if there is any in the family) is also a must. Endocrine disrupting chemicals are chemicals found in plastics, pesticides, personal care products and food additives. They can cause difficulty in conceiving, increased risk of breast cancer and developmental delays in children; as well as heart disease and thyroid dysfunction. Avoid using plastic. Even if you eat a healthy diet, you can miss out on key nutrients. Taking a daily multivitamin — ideally starting three months before conception — can help fill any gaps. Now since the past 8-9 months, I have been having a lot of hair loss. My doctor told me that the two are connected and I need hormonal medicines. I am not so comfortable with it. Is there any way of treating my hair fall and acne without hormonal medications? What is the best line of treatment for my acne and hair loss? -Tulasi, 26 years. Dear Tulasi, To answer your question, let us first understand how PCOD affects the body. We have both - male and female hormones in our bodies. PCOD is a condition where the balance between our male and female hormones is affected. The female hormone influence reduces and male hormone influence increases. This imbalance is the root cause of acne, abnormal hair growth on lower face and hair loss. Hence correcting this imbalance will help in preventing further acne and hair loss. This correction can be achieved by female hormone medicines, anti-male hormone medications or even lifestyle changes especially diet and regular

exercise. Acne may require treatment ranging from creams and gels to 3rd generation skin peels to antibacterial treatment depending on the stage of acne. The best treatment for hair loss is a holistic 360-degree approach that improves blood circulation and oxygen at the hair roots, provides the right nutritional balance at the root of hair, and generates hair growth factors to boost hair regrowth. You may benefit from treatments like Biogenesis, Nutridrive and scalp regenerative treatments. Q. My hair is oily at roots, but dry at the ends and has no volume. The more I style it, the drier the ends get, but the more I condition, the roots get oilier. Why does that happen? How to make them behave? - Shanaia, 25 years. Dear Shanaia, The fact that your hair is oily near the roots indicates that you have an oily scalp. This is usually due to your genetic tendency or other internal factors. Dry hair at the ends can occur due to many reasons - most of them are external factors. Commonest ones are oxidative damage and breaking of hair

structural bonds by chemicals (as used in straightening, coloring etc.), damage to the outer layer of hair due to frequent heat treatments (blow drying, ironing), stripping of hair moisture due to harsh shampoos, constant air-conditioned environment, frequent long flights, and wear and tear with harsh brushing. Opt for hair damage reversal treatments that regenerate your scalp from within and take care of the deeper oxidative damage too. These treatments will also rejuvenate the scalp and reduce excessive oiliness. Using appropriate hair packs that coat and strengthen the hair structure will help in making your hair soft and manageable. Use them every time you shampoo your hair, maintain a frequency of shampooing 3 times a week. Use mild hydrating and nourishing shampoos, again avoid thick shampoos for damaged hair, as that will cause product build up on scalp. The trick to ensure hydration without excess oiliness. Ensure that you also take care of nourishment for your hair - drink those 10 glasses of water, eat those walnuts/ almonds, strawberries/ pomegranates.

r Neeraj Shah is an executive in an MNC and makes a comfortable living. Life is hectic and tough, the job demands working late nights and he has very little time for himself and his family. At 45 he has been diagnosed with diabetes, he weighs 110 kgs & he suffers from snoring disorder. Mr Shah is not just one such person, we see a lot of us with a similar story. Most of us entangled with the daily routine, forget to take care of ourselves. It is important to realize that a healthy body is the foundation of a healthy mind and a successful life. Obesity is not an isolated condition but it comes with a package of problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea (snoring), polycystic ovarian disease, infertility, depression. Obesity is not a disease of the affluent; it is the outcome of reducing physical activity and availability of high calorie cheap ready to eat food in abundance. So a child playing virtual games on a computer and munching chips is a sure recipe for health disaster! Incidence of childhood obesity is also on the rise in India. India has earned the dubious distinction of “World Capital of Diabetes”. This is not a matter of pride but of grave concern because Diabetes is a chronic disease and its treatment has to be continued till death. Obesity is commonly measured as ‘Body Mass Index’ or BMI. A BMI of 37.5 and above is classified as ‘Morbid Obesity’

28

while a BMI of 32.5 along with diseases like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, PCOS is also classified as morbid obesity. The simplest way to weight loss is diet and exercise. But when you are morbidly obese & are unable to lose weight in spite of all efforts, you should consider Bariatric surgery. Neha, a 26 year old executive officer hated the way she looked because she was a 96 kgs in spite of all efforts to shed kilos. She was fed up of her polycystic ovarian syndrome and her knee pain due to which she could barely stay a day without pain killers. Finally she was referred to me by her friend. This was a clear cut case of a metabolic disorder. Neha underwent a bariatric surgery about 6 months ago. Now, Neha has lost 30kgs, wears the smartest of clothes and walks around confidently wherever she goes. Her PCOS is under control. Her knee pain has disappeared. One wise decision of getting sleeve gastrectomy saved her from so many issues. Bariatric surgery is not a cosmetic surgery. It is a lifestyle modifying operation which changes the eating pattern of a person. It helps one to reduce the calorie intake, while we educate them how to maintain the nutrition. Dr Sharad Sharma is a reputed Bariatric and advanced laparoscopic Surgeon practicing in Mumbai since 21 years.

Mixing the Global with The Local Chef Gaurav Gidwani of

Glocal Junction by Zeba Akhtar

The name Glocal Junction for me possessed an idea of fusion food. My understanding was clarified when I walked into this new and upcoming restaurant in Andheri West right inside the lane opposite City Mall, and was personally tended to, by ace Chef Gaurav Gidwani. With an eye for detail, and a love for exploring regional Indian food, Chef Gidwani likes to talk about his newest venture in terms of a mélange of different techniques, cuisines, flavours, as well as styles.

A

s someone who has travelled the world over and has catered to a variety of restaurants, including designing the food plan for an entire Saudi Arabian airline, Chef Gaurav had a plethora of palettes and essences to explore when designing the menu for his latest venture. His aim is to apply his extensive knowledge of global cuisine to the best local ingredients and meandering them to come up with amazing Glocal cuisines. Chef Gaurav brings with him an unlimited talent for preparing out of the world food.

“Glocal Junction is a mélange of flavours. From Modern European, to a hint of oriental along with a focus on regional Indian food, namely delicacies from the Kohli cuisine and the food from the Vidharba region. We all go and attend regional food festivals, but what beyond that? My attempt here is to draw from these cuisines and serve up dishes that are exciting, have a global tinge along with a local touch.” His firm belief in the need to bring up local flavours with a fun twist is reflected all throughout the menu of Glocal Junction. The innovative menu catches your attention with its ‘By The Day’ and ‘By The Night’ versions. While one would expect the same menu for a restaurant at all hours, Glocal Junction goes a notch further and hence has different menus for the day and night.

30

February 2016 | Volume1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

The question is why? To this, Chef Gaurav explains that the two sets of menu complement the vibe and energy of the place at the two different points in the day. He says that, “During the day the vibe is much more relaxed and hence long and lazy meals would be preferred which is why the ‘By The Day’ menu is served in an elaborate manner. However, by evening, owing to its buzzing music and fantastic cocktails, the place transforms into a high energy setting, and hence the menu is designed in a way that even when people are downing cocktails, they can easily grab a bite.” By The Night menu has items such as ‘disco anda fry’, ‘vada pao’ etc. which can be easily held in one hand while holding your drink in the other. The idea is to combine drinking and fun eating together at night, which is why the dishes are crafted to suit the mood.

The Glocal mélange is clearly palpable in dishes such as Chaat Pizza (a pizza served with chaat toppings), Masala Chai Pana cotta (pana cotta with a dash of masala chai flavor garnished with crushed Parle G biscuits), Coorgi Murgi Fry (Glocal’s take on Chilli Chicken but with a twist of spices from Coorg), Redang Chapli Kebabs(kebabs with a twist of international spices), Hot Tennesse Barrahh (dilli style barrah kebabs seasoned with the ever green hot tennesse sauce), along with drinks served in a plastic bag called ‘Thailee’ and some which are served in wooden glasses. The sauces have been replaced by fusion accompaniments such as wasabi raita, basil and coconut chutney, and jaali wafers instead French fries. The menu clearly shows the detailed research that has been carefully carried over a long period of time in order to create a menu that is not just fun, but also tasty, standardized, appealing as well as nourishing. All this accompanied by a one of its kind suspended bar with two stories, as well as a sprawling five thousand square feet property, definitely make Glocal Junction and Chef Gaurav Gidwani’s specials, a must try.

he general assumption about most young people is that they are reckless and in a world of their own. However, in a world filled with such stereotypes, there are a few that are turning this assumption over. Meet Tushar Pandey, and S Neel, two friends, cum classmates, who at the young age of twenty-three are moving towards making a difference, in whichever small way possible. Often at signals and even while walking across the street, we keep coming across street kids. And more often than not we end up ignoring it, faintly cursing the actions of their parents in general for putting them through a life of such misery. “Most of us walk by such kids. The worst part is, they are not even at fault. As city dwellers, belonging to decent families, we end up spending phenomenal amounts of money on random things here and there, but whenever it comes to taking out money for such children, we cringe.”, says Tushar who along with his friend Neel, always wanted to begin something related to the social sphere. As professionals in the sphere of

36

YouTube, they decided to come up with an initiative that will be based on social media, and will hence have the capacity to draw in as many people as possible owing to the current fad of going by social media trends. “The world today is powered by social media. It is the rule of the hash tag and any trend does not take much time to go viral. We decided to push

our initiative by the same means and hence #DonateaJoyBox came around.’ explained Tushar. The basic idea is to get a joy box, give it to an underprivileged street child, take a selfie, and post it on social media with #DonateaJoyBox along with tagging a few friends to go on and take the initiative. Now a joy box can be as simple as a few packs of biscuits, and can stretch on to any other thing that one may deem fit of

gifting to the child. Within a few months, the challenge reached great heights and more than 5000 joy boxes have been given out ever since. Tushar and Neel leveraged the power of YouTube and also made a short video to promote and explain the details of the initiative. The initiative soon reached celebrities as well and even Juhi Chawla came out to donate a joy box. She even tagged Shahrukh Khan. Donate a joy box has also been doing the rounds internationally and has been catching up in Dubai as well. Upon further chat, the partners, Tushar and Neel told us about their future plans. Yatharth Pictures, their joint venture is an endeavor to create viral videos based on concepts of social awareness. “We are a little patriotically inclined, which is why we want to make engaging content that highlights social issues and makes people aware of the ongoing issues.” Beams Tushar. We wish them all the best in their endeavor. If any one of you would want to make a street kid smile, then go out there and donate a joy box, today. You can also visit www. donateajoybox.com!

E

ach one has a story to share, Hooder’s Express talks of the extraordinary experiences from the seemingly ordinary looking lives of people. I must quote a special thanks to this Hooder for allowing a peep into his life and for letting me share it here on the column. “I have lived in a chawl once upon a time. My parents did multiple jobs a day to bring home enough money to make ends meet. My father helped deliver milk in the early hours of the morning, later rushed to Mithibai College where he worked as a clerk; and after duty he would tutor students. My mother taught the children who were deaf and dumb to cook in the mornings; and in the evenings she would babysit and cook meals for families. From them I learnt the true meaning of struggle and hard work. In those days, I would get a weekly pocket money of Rs. 2 and buying a samosa out of that pocket money was an indulgence for my brother and me.

I secretly love making the CEOs and other people who are considered important in the corporate world do pushups, step ups and other forms of exercises

The next very important phase in everyone’s life is college. I felt like a simpleton amidst the crowds who came from affluent families. I carried my books in a plastic bag, wore sports shoes and clothes that didn’t spell

fashion in any form. I felt inferior and stopped going to college altogether for many days; till the conscience in me urged me to stop lying to my parents about my whereabouts. So, I gathered myself, faced my fears and walked into Mithibai and I don’t regret that at all. Today when I look back I can say I made beautiful memories there, and close friends whose friendship I cherish till today. And, to address my fear of not being able to fit amongst my friends in terms of fashion and style, I began to look for jobs that would help me afford the same. I delivered newspapers, and then graduated to delivering milk as well. And, after coming back from college I would deliver flowers for puja at people’s doorsteps. Life did change for us when we moved out of the chawl to live in a building. I continued to do odd jobs that didn’t

give me the growth and the thrill for work that I was looking for till one day Salman Khan changed it all me. I believe if he hadn’t done the shirtless song in the movie Pyar kiya toh darna kya, people wouldn’t have been inspired to ape for a body like him. I began to workout aiming for a body like his. Today I love what I do, meet different people, help in transforming their lives by helping them achieve the body image that they aim for, and it would sound outlandish if I told you that I secretly love making the CEOs and other people who are considered important in the corporate world do pushups, step ups and other forms of exercises. At their workplace they make their subordinates sweat it out by giving them a lot of workload; and here I make them do the same in the form of the workouts for them.

Power through Healing

Dr. Jasmine Modi, Acupuncturist by Zeba Akhtar

I

n this time and age of rapid commercialization, and what is also believed to be instant gratification, old forms of healing and traditional medicines are increasingly on the decline. You may easily call it a loss of faith on the traditional. However, if we tell you the story of our woman of the hood, Dr. Jasmine Modi, then the above statement shall be reduced down to a misnomer. Now you may ask me, why so? Well, here is a woman who has brought the ancient Chinese healing art of Acupuncture back into our lives and is helping people, and especially women, tackle their health issues, one prick at a time. She is a PhD and a gold medalist in the science of Oriental medicine from Sri Lanka, and today this licensed practitioner is drawing in people from all across the city, to heal them, and reinstate the faith in the science of oriental medicine. Acupuncture is an art of healing i.e. treating disease by pricking tiny needles on the body surface. According to acupuncture, there are 14 channels termed as meridians in our body. There is continuous flow of energy called CHI. YIN & YANG are the two aspect of the Chi. Chi is one but has two polarities i.e. Positive & Negative. In a normal person, these two factors are in balance. Whenever there is obstruction to the flow of energy or when there is deficiency or excess of energy in an organ or if there is imbalance between Yin & Yang, then the person suffers from an ailment. By acupuncture needling,

40

the obstruction, or imbalance is corrected. After reaching the diagnosis 10 – 12 points are selected for treatment and very thin, small needles are inserted at these points. Needles are withdrawn after 15-20 minutes. What may actually seem scary is actually quite beneficial. When I saw her perform the practice of acupuncture on her patients, I could not help but ask how painful it was. To this Dr. Modi replied, “Acupuncture may look painful, but in reality it is a highly painless practice. When the needle hits the surface of a skin, you feel nothing more than just a prick, and after that you feel nothing at all.” Dr Modi provides acupuncture services for a variety of ailments, but as a woman she understands the issues related with women the best, which is why her area of expertise includes treatment of infertility among women, irregular menstrual cycles, painful menstrual cycles as well as cosmetic acupuncture, which is more of a modern day concept and involves using acupuncture for cosmetic and beautification purposes such as facelift, face contouring and the likes. Most women develop major side effects, especially while undergoing infertility treatments, and this can have a major impact on the overall physical as well as mental wellbeing of a person. Her patients swear by her practice and some have even gone ahead and testified to being treated without medication and just acupuncture, which helped them in regulating hormones, reduction in ovarian cysts, and betterment in the quality of eggs. As a woman, she

very well understands the emotions associated with pregnancy and healing of infertility and what difference it can make in the life of someone who has been trying to have children for a long time. In fact, in one such cases, she backed a patient’s In Vitro Fertilization treatment with acupuncture resulting in the patient conceiving after 10 years of trying to have a child. The couple were thrilled with joy. Not just that, she has been testified to have healed health issues such as Polycystic ovaries, dermatological issues, addiction to smoking, obesity, glaucoma, depression, hypertension, allergies, migraine, hair fall and alopecia, ligament tears, psoriasis, among many others. It is very rarely that we see such faith in what is usually regarded as alternative medicine, and the results have indeed been spell binding. We respect and honor her services, especially to issues related to women and hope that she continues to heal.

Marathon man Mr. Souraab

42

by Sidharth Sodhi

February 2016 | Volume1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

M

r. Souraab has been training people in running for the past twenty years. Seven to eight years ago, he started operating from the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park at the Lokhandwala back road. He also trains people for marathons. Souraab comes across as a simple honest man who is deeply passionate about what he does. “I plan to run till I am eighty five ninety years old,” he says. He wakes up every morning at 5 AM. He stresses on keeping things simple, having the right technique, breathing correctly, getting good sleep and good food. “If you have the right technique, you can run on any surface. Running on the beach is ideal. Grass and mud tracks are great. However, in a city like Mumbai you do not necessarily get the ideal surface to run on. So technique and breathing is imperative”! When one watches television or chats with friends, how much breath do we expend? Likewise, we aim to attain normalcy in our breathing as we run. That makes the feet light. It gives you rhythm. Once your breathing is under control you can do anything! Souraab used to run barefoot initially. It is only five odd years ago that he started running with shoes on. He sees many people listening to music or checking their cell phone’s as they run. He suggests training without these. “If the phone is left elsewhere for an hour, I do not think it is an issue. For instance if you want to do fifty or hundred push-ups then first you have to set your mind to the task and then go ahead and achieve it. However, if your mind is diverted by what needs to be done in office or said on a call, then the exercise fails. If one is running to reduce the extra weight, then focus on it and work towards it. If the mind is diverted in two places then even if you end up running ten kilometers, it is futile”! One must think positive for the effect to show. Running is an occasion to spend time with oneself. The great thing about Souraab’s method of personal training is that he runs with his students. He does not just sit on a bench and tell people to run rounds. “That is no fun,” he says. He runs those rounds with them. Some want to prepare for 6 kilometers, some want to prepare for 21 kilometers, some for forty-two. Therefore, every day he ends up running close to forty kilometers. As a ‘running master’, he runs the distance with them to explain the technique, the entire process. Once the park closes,

What makes it further exciting is that running has so many variations. There is back (wards) running which is excellent for the knees and a great way to lose weight around the tummy. Side (ways) running, sprint running, target running, running with weights. All these programs are like positive experiments on yourself. To test and stretch one’s limits. Different ways to make one strong and stay fit. If you look good in the mirror, your performance improves everywhere. People spend a lot of time, effort, and money to

he continues to train with his students on the road. To train for a marathon he says, one needs to start training at least two years in advance. The marathon is a mind game. The mind has to be fit. It is essential to get eight-nine hours of sleep the night before the marathon to keep the mind alert. He says running can be done at any time of the day but running early mornings is ideal because one gets the added benefit of fresh air.

Seven to eight years ago, he started operating from the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park at the Lokhandwala back road

work on the upper half of the body but they ignore the legs. That is the ‘trunk of the tree’. It needs to be solid. Lastly, he says that whenever possible people must walk distances. He himself cycles from his home to the park, every day. Do not make excuses about the harsh sun, or the rain or humidity. Flow with nature, he says. Do not pray to the sun when it rises early morning only to abuse it when it shines on you in the afternoons. Connecting with nature makes you stronger. What nature gives you, accept it graciously. It is essential for the body to sweat and release toxins. If one exercises positively and wholeheartedly even the weather supports you.

Lokhandwala Market by Zeba Akhtar

T

destination for cycling enthusiasts in the hood.

Lokhandwala Residential complex was the brainchild of Siraj Lokhandwala who is the proprietor of the famous Lokhandwala Constructions. When he first bough the marshy land in 1978, everyone was scared that it was a wrong investment as at the time, nobody would be willing to stay off so far away from the city center. However, he had a vision, and that vision came true soon enough.

Residents of Lokhandwala take immense pride in keeping their hood safe, clean, and fun, which is why almost every festival is celebrated with pomp and fervor. Be it the massive Ganpati, or the Durga Puja celebrations or the way the entire place gets lit up way before Diwali, every festival is equally special.

he history of Lokhandwala Market goes back to 1978. During this time, Mumbai was all about ‘town’ and the suburbs were hardly a choice amongst people for residing.

Today, Lokhandwala as an area is one of the largest residential suburbs in the whole of Mumbai and has soon turned into a place that is buzzing with activity. Around the initial residences, came up the ever dynamic Lokhandwala market, and both of these combined became of the most sought after neighborhoods in the city of Mumbai. Numerous members of the film as well as television industry call this place home, and each day we get to see one skyscraper replacing and towering over another. The locality is dotted with many parks, and green patches where you will often find residents coming out for a jog along with their pets. The outer periphery is also marked with what is known as the ‘Lokhandwala Back Road’ and is a major

44

That apart, the place is full of eateries, shopping centers, knick-knack and thrift stores, and numerous cafes.

This suburban neighborhood has also featured in a major motion film called ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, which was based on the 1991 shootout that took place within the complex. It was a four-hour long daytime encounter, which resulted in the killing of seven criminals that were reigning supreme over the Mumbai underworld mafia during those times. It was the first ever encounter to take place in broad day light and that too within a residential complex. The entire locality of Lokhandwala was in a way a major impetus for the development of that particular part of the hood, and soon adjoining spaces were dotted with numerous buildings, stores, as well as shopping complexes. So next time you visit Lokhandwala Complex, don’t forget to explore it first hand!

ore often than not, these fitness fads are just a way to lure us into the process. However, in a world where fitness has become more of a parade than an activity, Bhushan Dhanani, managing partner of StrataSoles, India is all set to bring forth real value and benefits to the fitness fraternity. The StrataSoles Training System, is a state of the art, premium anatomically contoured weighted insole, which is fitted inside any athletic or casual shoe. The weighted insole works on the principle of increasing the effects of the gravitational pull on the body during training, thus increasing workload and producing increased muscle strength.

StrataSoles, instead, goes under the last point in the body i.e. the foot, thus giving maximum resistance with no chances of injury, without affecting the body’s natural movement.” says Bhushan Danani, the Fitness Partner in Mumbai for StrataSoles –India. Bhushan has completed his course work in Fitness Training, from International Sports Sciences Association, in California, USA. He has been ranked amongst the top five experts in his course.

“Most athletes use Ankle Weights which put undesired Stress on the joint & feel unnatural and clumsily cling on to the leg right above the ankle. This increases the chances of injury & even alters the body’s natural gait of movement.

48

The feedback that the Founders have received about the insoles from players, coaches, former Olympian Nikhil Kanetkar, who runs a badminton academy at Balewadi, and the Tennis coach Hemant Bendrey at PYC Gymkhana, in Pune, is very positive. Bhushan further clarified that, “Initially, StrataSoles was being targeted only for runners and athletes, but now even tennis and badminton players have been reaping the benefits of the product, and I am sure they will notice the difference.”

It is here to change the way you run, and is a big leap in the world of professional running and racetrack sports. We caught up with Bhushan to know exactly what this new addition to the world of fitness was all about.

useful facts, which can actually help readers to take wise decisions when it comes to choosing their path to fitness rather than promoting things widely doing the rounds on social media, most of which, he says are just wrong facts.

It is Bhushan’s passion for fitness that led him to bring in StrataSoles in Mumbai. An investment banker by profession, he has always been a health enthusiast, and runs a blog ‘Demystifying Fitness’ as well. esidents of Lokhandwala have been agitating over the installation of 4G towers in the hood.

Now many of us would have thought of this as a disruption in the path of development. However, we need to look closer, and we need to look again. Living Local caught up with the residents and their representatives, Mr. Vinod Mehra and Mr. Surjit Singh in order to know what was the entire agitation actually about. Here is how the chain of events transpired: On the 4th of January, a truck arrived and began to set up 4G towers by Reliance on the Promod Mahajan Gardens. When a few senior citizens saw this, they went ahead and expressed their concerns to others in the hood. Soon, it was found out that there were around eleven hundred and sixty eight such tower, which were sanctioned by BMC to be installed in parks all over the city.

from IIT Bombay, who is an expert in the field of radiation, microwaves, and antennas. Professor Kumar suggests that while we may not see any palpable short term effects, the long term effects of such radiation is profound, and puts buildings as well as residents at maximum risk. Sensing the nature of the issue, the residents have come together to organize a silent march, along with an online petition, which is being filled in by as many people as possible to make due amends in the installation of such towers. The agitation is a clear indicator of the concern, which the residents have for their immediate community, and we hope that it reaches its due result.

The demands of the citizens are simple. They asked the officials who had come in for installation, to bring forward a declaration by TRAI or any other such authority, stating that these towers were safe and were free of radiation. However, ever since then, none of the officials returned with a letter of safety, and instead 4 G towers were installed in other parts of the hood. “We do not want to come in the path of development. After all 4G is a move forward in the making of digital India. However, we refuse to put the life of our residents at stake. It is clear that these are being installed without all safety measures being followed, and hence we are not willing to take the risk. Why not follow proper protocol and install them in places away from people? Says Vinod Mehra, a resident of Lokhandwala who has been awarded repeatedly for his selfless service to the community. Another resident Surjit Singh, who has played a pivotal role in mobilizing the residents for the agitation informed us about how 4G towers must be installed at a minimum distance of two hundred meters in circumference from buildings and such areas. The agitation attained momentum, and is now being backed scientifically by Professor Girish Kumar February 2016 | Volume 1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition) 49

UNRAVELING ADHD: WHAT CAN YOU DO

www.shutterstock.com/Poznyakov

by Nivedita Mataliya

Nivedita Mataliya is a counseling psychologist specializing in children and relationship counseling

In this final part of our series on ADHD, we will focus on the most important component and that is what you can do as parents to help your child. Here goes: 1. Physical Activity: This is very important. Physical activity should be part of your child’s daily routine. Exercise, dance, aerobics, martial arts, gymnastics or swimming, it could be anything that the child is interested in. Physical activity increases the brain’s “happy” chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. This helps the child concentrate. Group activities have the added advantage of developing the child’s social skills. 2. Work out a Routine: It is imperative to have a set time for activities. Waking up, bath time, breakfast, all the way to bedtime should be clearly incorporated in the routine with timings set for each task. This helps the child understand what is expected of him and helps him focus. This routine brings about a consistency that has a calming effect on the child. 3. Ample Sleep: Children with ADHD have trouble sleeping. Care should be taken to reduce all stimulation such as physical sports, gadgets, games, TV

50

at least 1 to 2 hours before sleeping. Instead, engage the child in a calming routine like reading short stories, warm water bath, light massage or a relaxation technique.

activities you find relaxing. This is necessary. You cannot teach a child to relax if you are on the edge yourself. Make sure to praise your child for their efforts and not their outcomes.

4. Diet and Nutrition: It is pragmatic to reduce the child’s intake of sugar and food with preservatives, colors and MSG. Your child will benefit with smaller portions of a balanced diet eaten at 2 to 3 hour intervals. Take care of the child’s omega 3, iron, magnesium and zinc intake. You could include these as supplements after consulting your doctor.

7. Consistency: You have to have absolute consistency in the application of whatever measures and techniques you are using for the child.

5. Reduce Gizmo Time: In today’s time children learn to operate gizmos even before they say A. We cannot and should not expect our children to be gadget free. It is important to limit their gadget time to about an hour daily. Excess stimulation by gadgets results in arousing the child’s nervous system leading to lack of concentration, irritability, and improper sleep patterns. 6. Nurturing: Dealing with an ADHD child is trying. However, what works best with them is a nurturing yet positively assertive environment. These children are much queued on to your emotions and reactions and reflect the same in their behavior. So take care of yourself by rejuvenating yourself with

February 2016 | Volume1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

8. Seek Professional Help: Behavior therapy, art and play therapy, cognitive therapy, muscle relaxation techniques are some of the methods that counselors use to help children with ADHD. They also aid parents to help develop the child’s routine, develop better communication patterns by using a form of therapy best suited for the child. It is important to understand that ADHD is not a debilitating problem. There are a number of famous personalities who had ADHD and have gone ahead to achieve great success. Michael Phelps, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Jim Carrey, Sir Richard Branson, John F Kennedy, Will Smith, Michael Jordan are just a few names. In fact, Psychology Today has stated that people with ADHD are more likely to start their own company. Do not worry; your child will be fine. Happy Parenting.

FREEDOM DISCIPLINE

F

reedom and Discipline are two words that are not usually used together, at least in regard to children. It seems counter-intuitive—how can you give kids freedom and still have discipline, or be disciplined and have freedom? It is generally understood that children can only “behave” when strict discipline is imposed on them, meaning their freedom taken away– this is the thinking of traditional schooling. But Maria Montessori discovered that the two, freedom and discipline, indeed go hand in hand. In traditional schools, discipline is imposed by the teacher/adult and onto the child. His own motives and feelings do not matter.

In the beginning the young child is still struggling to gain control over his own movements. It is useless to urge a toddler to sit still, for he does not have the self-control and coordination over his mind and his body to attempt to obey such a command. At this time the child needs our help and care, not our scolding, to help him achieve discipline. The child needs to experience the freedom to move at will and to choose his own activities. Through his work (in the Montessori

The only way we learn to make responsible decisions is through practice- it is not a skill that can be taught, but one each individualmust learn by trial and error

classroom, helping with chores at home, through his own selfguided play) he develops himself physically, learning how to control his muscles and coordinate his movements; and also mentally and emotionally, choosing how to spend his time, and experiencing how others react to his actions. This freedom requires a set of limits, just a few simple rules for what is and is not acceptable behavior, which must be explained to the child in a way that make sense to him. Experiencing the natural consequences to his actions helps the child connect cause and effect, and eventually be able to think through and predict the possible consequences before he acts so he may choose more wisely. At first it is the guide and the parents who enforce these limits and their natural consequences, but over time we can hand over more freedom and responsibility to the child, waiting until he is ready to accept it. The only way we learn to make responsible decisions is through practice- it is not a skill that can be taught, but one each individual must learn by trial and error. And so, it is through freedom that the child learns how to discipline himself– how to control his body and movements; how to think through his options when making decisions; how to be a responsible person who is respectful of himself and others. He develops his own inner compass for what is right and wrong, without needing external rewards or threats of punishment to do the right thing. TAROTSCOPE

YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2016

THE YEAR AHEAD FOR AQUARIUS Happy Birth Anniversary! You can cause a dull and stagnant relationship to flare up with new excitement this year, if it is important to you. Else, you can let it go. Increase your level of physical activity for better health. Finances will see a rise in expenditure and you can use this for useful investments. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) A month of discovering that a little caution can go a long way! You will then be able to have just what you need to keep everything, including relationships, health and finances, just the way you want. Play safe now, if possible for you. It would be hugely beneficial.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): You have the precise resources you need and you will need to also remind yourself of this fact, in this month, as too much will be happening all around you. Do whatever it takes to keep your focus on well being. Take good care of your diet and finances.

GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): A strange but informative month for you, as you find out a lot of behind-the-scenes stories. Nothing drastic will happen, but a few jumps and starts do offer themselves. Regular and routine healthcare and practical economising will help.

CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): You will feel the strongest of under-currents all around and you need to stay close to everything that reassures you. There is nothing to fear. Watch your diet and expenditure, and keep both of them routine.

52

LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): Things seem to be awaiting your exciting interaction. It would be beneficial to remember that comfort zone is necessary for safety. Find ways that interest you to look after your health and finances, but from what you already know. Stay away from the unknown, for now. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): You are well-equipped to deal with the tremors you will feel in the reality all around, remember that. Many seem to be reaching an end of their run. Perhaps, it is for the better. Watch your diet and spending, and you are good to go.

LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

Like a pro performer under the spotlight, keep your wits about yourself in all contingencies. Know that you have the necessary resources to deal with the current situation. Don’t be fooled by apparent difficulties; they are actually the twists that make the tale interesting. Play it safe in matters of health and personal finance.

SCORPIO

(October 23rd November 22nd):

You will have a good time this month, much to the surprise of others. What may unground you is the plight of people close to you, but your good fortune can rub off on them. In all situations, don’t over-exert. Look after your health and finances in predictable ways.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):

Your attitude in dealing with life is the winner this month. Don’t bother about making sense of everything that happens, because the senseless, too, can happen. Do, however, keep a firm hold of your innate wisdom, and use that in huge dollops in matters of health and finance. Watch your diet and spend judiciously.

CAPRICORN

(December 22nd–January 19th):

Keep in mind that resources for everything are always present, and you will be able to deal with all the clearings and endings that are likely this month. You will be able to let go of deadwood. Health will need you to stop experimenting and decide on a routine. Finance will be good.

AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): You will suddenly have great clarity in what you need to keep in your life and what is worth your energy. High emotional quotient present now may make you uncomfortable, but you can deal very well with it. Health, with routine care, will be good. Expenses are high, but you can make them profitable.

PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): Underlying everything that happens now is an emotional engagement that you will understand perfectly. Yet, refrain from sharing your understanding with others. Only share your good will and care. You will need to be practical about health, and include routines that calm you. For finances, ask for advice from knowledgeable people.
