Failure is for the privileged who Succeed One of the biggest fears of humans is failure. Will I.. Should I… If I… – FAIL. All doubts and thoughts that cross a mind at different stages. Mostly before one even takes a plunge. If you never want to fail, here is the simplest mantra… Don’t even try something. ‘Cause the moment you try your chances of failing have multiplied. So why try? I say don’t TRY. Trying is the first step towards failure. DO IT is what’s needed. That guarantees one thing- Success. I count success as getting that first step towards what you intend on Doing. The final goal achieved is the Award or Reward. Success is that you DID IT… Against the biggest odd- the thought of Failing. You are now Management the privileged few to Succeed and Neeraj Vasudeva only you will taste the blood of Failure. What’s common is – Success and Failure. They are the yin and yang. We are as much a result of our Success as much as that of our Failures. Without the failures we are incomplete. And without success there is no failure. The above may sound philosophical blabbering to some. It would have sounded the same to me a sometime back. But when you happen to be the one who took that first small step (which is the Success), you understand the meaning that lies behind the words of philosophical wisdom.

5 Reasons to

Incorportate Accessories in your Outfits by Priya Shah

Body- Image is the image a person has about oneself in their head. What they think about themselves AND THEIR BODIES WHEN they look in the mirror. IT’S QUITE ECONOMICAL

ccessorizing when done right, can be extremely beneficial for an individual’s appearance. It adds an element to an outfit; it makes “dressing up - complete.” Accessorizing includes every detail from a tiny hair pin, bindi, spectacles, glares, neck-pieces, bracelets, waist chain, cuffs, watches, footwear, anklets – to name a few , neglected by us while creating an ensemble. For most people, accessorizing is only an occasion thing. But if incorporated on every day basis, with various outfits – the outcome will make you fall in love with it. I too was never an accessory person & I would always wonder, “How will adding more accessories to my wardrobe help me?” But since I love to experiment, I began investing in them & I actually found myself quite fascinated with the idea – which you will discover in this article. As a matter of percentage, accessories must be 25% of your wardrobe budget; but we hardly leave 2%-3% of our budget to it. Therefore, here are some reasons why you need to love invest, wear, & make accessorizing part of your routine dressing:

April 2016 | Volume1 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)

Accessorizing will change the look of your outfits. Imagine accessorizing a simple black top in four different ways simply by changing the shoes, jewelry, handbag or belt. This would cost a lot less than having to buy separate outfits. Sure if you want the branded bag or shoes you will pay more for them but there are so many other choices out there. Remember it’s the color, style and design that you are looking for in accessories to compliment your outfit so you do not have to pay the earth for them. So, it’s quite simple - the more accessories you have, the less clothes you will need because you can make an old outfit look new by just playing with the detailing.

GETS YOU ALL CREATIVE If you are the experimenting types, playing with accessories will be your thing. When you accessorize, you can wear your versatile basics without looking boring. The right accessories can truly take any boring outfit and make it fun. Accessories

an

outfit. So use them to communicate (I thoroughly believe – Use your appearance to Communicate messages about you.) So, if you understand how to use the right accessories for the right occasion, you can truly make an outfit tasteful. While choosing accessories, keep in mind your purpose for the day & accessorize accordingly.

FLATTERS YOUR ASSETS One of the reasons to love accessories is because they have power; Power to attract attention. Humans come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s no secret that certain clothes & style flatters only certain figure. One needs to figure out their assets and body variations and accordingly use accessories to adorn their assets while camouflage their body variations. Let me ask you a question, how manytimes have you stood in front of a mirror and pointed out all the imperfections in your body? Whether be it your small bust or wide hips, sometimes you just have to come to terms with the fact that there are some things you can’t change. But what you can do is use accessories to

pull attention away from your problem. areas. Few examples to explain the above idea are High heels for petite girls as it adds height and elongates the legs Long, vertical earrings can has a slimming effect on the face, and when suitable for those with a round face Belts are the best tools to accentuate your curves

ENABLES PERSONAL EXPRESSION Accessories aren’t just about making statements, but it’s more than that. My previous articles talks about how colors and clothes communicate. Similarly every accessory we put on also communicates something. Example: pearls speak about elegance while beads & shells speak about a beach holiday. A solid structured black bag is formal than colorful flowery bag. So again, each accessory comes in various shapes, sizes, color, fabric and all of it matters while putting it in the ensemble. Use them to express your personal style more simply.

IMPACTS BODY IMAGE Body-Image is the image a person has about oneself in their head. What they think about themselves & their body they look in the mirror. Many people think, thinner people have a positive body image, which is a myth. I’ve seen many plus sizes being content about them because they have understood the fact that they need to experiment and find out what looks good on them. So whatever is the built – if one knows how to dress and appear their best they will naturally be happier on the inside and outside. Body-Image is a lot about being able to communicate the personal style RIGHT. Now you must be thinking how is accessories a part of Body-Image. But if you think about a person, instead of disliking their body; concentrating more on how they can love and adorn it won’t it impact their Body-Image? Now do you see why accessories are such an important part of every woman’s wardrobe? So next time you come across an accessory that screams to you, don’t hesitate! Remember, accessories are a woman’s best friend! So go ahead and accessorize!!!

hen you are packing for a vacation, what will happen if you carry winter clothes for Goa and your beachwear while packing for a trek to the Himalayas? When you get a dress stitched, why are you so specific to the extent of getting even that quarter inch alteration done? Why do you have different beauty products for different skin types? Does your doctor always give you the same tablet for all your illnesses? The answer is no, because there is nothing like one type that suits all. Similarly, when it comes to your finances you are unique - you have a different risk tolerance, different set of financial goals, and different expectations from investments, which will need different solutions to address them.

So how does one begin? First list down the goals that you wish to achieve. Goals may differ based on what stage of life you are in. While in your 20’s you may have goals like funding your own post-graduation, sabbatical for further studies, etc., whilst in your 30’s you may wish to own a house, build a corpus for your child’s education, may be pay down a loan, etc. In your 40’s it could be planning for your retirement corpus or marriage costs for your kids. Goals change as your age changes. It is then critical to assign priorities to your goals. Do incorporate the effect of inflation in the cost of your goals. To be able to achieve your goals you will need to generate savings for making investments. Keep a check on your expenses. Try to identify the nondiscretionary ones, which you can do away with. “ Do not save what is left after spending

but spend what is left after saving” – Warren Buffet.

investments at least quarterly or halfyearly.

Identifying your risk tolerance is the starting point whilst making an investment. Someone who is young and has a regular flow of income may have a higher risk appetite compared to someone who may be nearing retirement and may have important goals like child’s post-graduation and wedding just ahead of him.

Be a disciplined investor. Invest regularly and stick to your asset allocation. Know the product completely before investing in it and do not just go after returns.

Understand the difference between ability to take risk and willingness to take risk. Whether you are a conservative or an aggressive investor, diversification is a must. This is where asset allocation comes into picture. Asset allocation helps you include different instruments in your kitty by assigning proper weights in line with your risk appetite and goals. Also, asset allocation should be designed keeping your longer term and shorter term goals in mind. Certain investments like real estate and equities generate significantly better returns when you stay invested for a long term. Ensure you review your

LIFE HACK Capture with your heart, do not over think. If you consider photography beyond clicking selfies, then these tips might help you get started.

ART OF STORY TELLING Every photograph holds a story within; explore the unspoken language of visuals. It requires lot of thought and mental imagery put into every shot, be patient with your subject and sync with their vibe. Good images communicate; a photograph can be serious, inquisitive, funny, complicated.

PLAY WITH LIGHT Natural source of light is my personal favorite tool, and the best time to take pictures is early mornings and late afternoons. Experiment with different angles and play with shadows for dramatic effects.

12

PHOTOGRAPHY MAKES ME FEEL INFINITE; IT GIVES ME THE LIBERTY TO CREATE A WORLD THAT APPEALS TO MY SENSIBILITIES AS AN ARTIST. MY INITIAL EXPERIMENTATION WITH A PROFESSIONAL CAMERA WAS A DISASTER; I WAS SO CONFUSED ABOUT THE TECHNICALITIES THAT IT OVERPOWERED THE JOY OF LEARNING SOMETHING NEW. YOU CAN BROWSE THROUGH MULTIPLE TUTORIAL VIDEOS, LEARN THE VARIOUS SETTINGS, AND FILTER OPTIONS BUT WHAT REALLY MATTERS IS YOUR UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE.

CONNECT AND LEARN Search for online photography groups in your hood, they are usually free or have minimum membership fees. You will be surprised at how much you learn and experiment with likeminded people. Photo walks are an exciting way to explore photography and share valuable information.

NO RULES There are no rules or boundaries, trust your gut and make it good enough.

April 2016 | Volume1 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)

The more you click, the better you get. Find an instinctive way to understand the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. It takes time, but eventually you will develop a natural flair. Every photographer is naturally inclined towards a specific stream of photography; the depth of human emotions inspires me. Find what drives your imagination and chase it with all your passion. Capture moments, they are priceless.

Hi...I am a 25 year old girl. I have just joined an I.T company for my job. I experience lots of burning on my cheeks and nose. Skin becomes red especially when i travel in sun. Occasionally I also break out into eruptions. Have yet not taken any treatment. Can u suggest some creams and treatment? Jigna, Rajkot Hi Jigna. This condition of skin that u are experiencing is known as rosacea. It gets aggravated with stress, sun, heat, spicy food and hot drinks like tea, coffee or alcohol. The best thing to do is to correct your life style. Protect your skin with sunscreen which has an SPF between 15 to 30. Use creams containing hyaluronic acid and calming agents like calamine and aloe vera. Treatments like photofacials help alleviate the redness of skin. I am 29 years. I am an actor. I have uneven textured skin. Lots of scars on face. Some scars are very deep. I used to have pus filled pimples on my face 7 to 8 years ago. The pimples have settled but have left behind these scars. This causes little issue with my makeup and it cannot conceal all my scars. This doesn’t look good on screen. Is there any solution for scars.? Can I have a smooth flawless skin again? Amit, Versova, Mumbai Hi Amit. Usually in male clients the

nodular type of acne leaves behind marks and scars easily. If treated early it prevents scarring and does not leave any telltale signs. Once the acne scars have formed it is difficult to erase them completely but thanks to new age treatment like fractional lasers it is possible to lighten them to a great extent. Peels like TCA and glycolic peels help lighten up the marks and scars. Hyaluronic acid fillers help fill up the scars instantly with no downtime. People who are into modelling and acting need to face camera and do not have much time so they usually prefer to undergo treatments like fillers which show instant results.

consult a Dermatologist who would address your concern and prescribe medicine accordingly. Treatments such as mesotherapy and PRP are safe and effective methods which help reduce hairfall and stimulate new hair growth. Since it is a genetic condition the treatment results and number of sessions required may vary from person to person.

Hi I am 38 years old. I am an accountant. I have been experiencing hairfall since 3 to 4 Years around the hairline and crown area of scalp. I have consulted a doctor before and was using antihairloss lotion but could not see much result. Kindly advice? Sanjay, Delhi Hi Sanjay. Male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia is very common and is a hereditary condition. DNA SPA FACIAL by Synthia Lau

DNA SPA FACIAL A facial technique which stimulates the natural skin functions to enhance the complexion. FGF 2 is protected resulting in longer contact time with the Fibroblast Growth Factor receptors leading to very intense synthesis of collagen, elastin and GAGs and a boost in cells regeneration. Polypeptide enzyme accelerates cell reproduction resulting in smoother skin. Proteolytic enzyme gently removes dead cells and stimulates enzymatic activity leading to a livelier and brighter complexion. Damaged tissues are repaired and skin is thickened resulting in reduced sensitivity.

Auto healing process intensify production of collagen and skin looks younger. Nano sun block reflects sun light resulting in a total cover shield against its damaging effect. Skin becomes fairer and pigmentation is reduced. To complete the program, a course of 8 facials is recommended at frequency of once a week. A UNIQUE AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION A unique blend of strong actives to treat the following problems: Pitted scars Severe acne Wrinkles Pigmentation Uneven skin tone Lack-lustre skin

www.shutterstock.com/ Irina Bg

THE APPROACH INVOLVES

16

As we age, there is a sharp decline in the cell’s energy. This is particularly significant after the age of 30 years, when energy levels decline sharply till it levels off from age 50 years at an extremely low level of around 25% of peak energy. April 2016 | Volume1 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)

This means that for a mature skin around 50 years of age, the production of new cells is very slow. If we can significantly increase cells’ energy in the treatment process we can cause the cavities in the pore areas to be filled up thereby removing the pitted scars rapidly, and we can exfoliate the dead cells quickly resulting in a more even color tone. The answer is YES! We are able to do this! The ability to boost cells’ production by protection of a general hormone, FGF-2. This will improve skin’s ability to synthesize cells’ production, thereby leading to the rapid removal of scars, and uneven skin tone. The solution is to activate the skin’s Auto Healing Function(AHF) so that the skin begins to produce collagen and becomes firmer and more supple. The use of proteolytic enzyme has an intense desquamating function. As a result, the top layer of the skin sheds faster than normal rate. This action leads to rapid increase of new cells which in turn leads to rapid removal of scars and uneven skin tone. The use of tretinoin-like substance to control tyrosinase activities, thereby lightens skin.

How Processed Foods make us unhealthy

IT’S TIME WE ALL STOPPED FEARING GOOD FAT. EATING FAT WILL KEEP YOUR HUNGER UNDER CONTROL, GIVE YOU INCREDIBLE ENERGY THROUGHOUT THE DAY , IMPROVE THE TASTE AND TEXTURE OF YOUR FOOD, AND IMPROVE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR AND RELEVANT CHOLESTEROL LEVELS (SATURATED FAT INCREASES HDL BETTER THAN VIRTUALLY ANYTHING ELSE

What is “processed” food? It’s foods that have changed form, and are therefore different from how they occur in nature. How is food processed? There are two main kinds of processing. 1. Physical change, such as chopping orcooking the food. Even this processing can change the nutritional value... 2. Chemical processing. Chemicals are also used to intentionally change the form of foods, eg, colors, preservatives, flavorings, preservatives, etc. WHY ARE FOODS PROCESSED? To protect them from bad bacteria and to make them more visually appealing, packageable, marketable, and shippable. It’s all a matter of convenience. These products are so fake that classifying them as “food” is quite a stretch. Even whole healthy foods are processed. Vegetables are sprayed so that they can be stored longer – potatoes may be six months old before you eat them! Read the ingredients list on a package – how many things do you recognize? How many are “extracts,” “from concentrate,” or just scary scientific words? Processed foods are bad for the body and mind in so many ways. For one thing, the artificial ingredients they contain, can cause reactions in the digestive, immune, and nervous systems. Also, processed foods often lack many crucial nutrients. The more processed foods you eat, the less nourished you become.

Common Foods

Highly

Processed

Bleached and Highly-refined Flour is devoid of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, leaving nothing but starch and a small amount of protein in these products. White bread, pasta, and baked goods are the main culprits. It’s these refined, simple, high glycemic carbs that you need to avoid. They’re quickly digested and cause your blood sugar to spike, and your body immediately either uses or stores them (as glycogen and/or fat). A better option is to opt for whole, complex, quality carbohydrates such as bajra, rajgira, buckwheat, or you can try minimally processed whole-grain breads and pastas. Refined Sweeteners Artificial sweeteners exacerbate cravings, disrupt gut bacteria, and cause glucose intolerance.Ditch the aspartame, highfructose corn syrup, and even agave nectar. A better option, if you must use sweeteners, is to use natural sweeteners low in fructose. Raw organic honey and coconut palm sugar are best. Refined, Trans-fat or Partially-hydrogenated Vegetable Oils “Refining” an oil can involve bleaching, deodorizing, or treatment with an acid or alkali to prevent it from going rancid. Many oils are hydrogenated, a process that makes them solid, but also creates trans-fats. These are the unhealthy fats that increase bad and decrease good cholesterols and cause heart disease and diabetes. They’re unsaturated, cheap, and processed, and they are used in most fast foods, baked goods and fried foods. It’s time we all stopped fearing good fat. Eating fat will keep your hunger under control, give you incredible energy throughout the day , improve the taste and texture of your food, and improve your blood sugar and relevant cholesterol levels (saturated fat increases HDL better than virtually anything else you could do). Toss the canola, stick to extra virgin olive oil, butter, lard, ghee, and unrefined coconut oil. The Bottom Line If you don’t recognize something, don’t buy it! Stick with the KISS method – minimallyprocessed, natural, whole foods. Your body will thank you for it. And you can Stay Healthy.

LL | health & beauty WHY ARE THEY CALLED “ WISDOM TEETH” Third molars have been referred to as “teeth of wisdom” since the Seventeenth Century and simply “wisdom teeth” since the Nineteenth Century. The third molars generally appear much later than other teeth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25 when a person reaches adulthood. It is generally thought among linguists that they are called wisdom teeth because they appear so late, at an age when a person matures into adulthood and is “wiser” than when other teeth have erupted. WHY YOUR WISDOM TEETH ARE NOT AS WISE AS YOU MAY HAVE HOPED!! Impacted Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth could be as useful as any of your other teeth, but because they are in the very back of the mouth, they often don’t have enough room to grow in. It’s not unusual for wisdom teeth to be positioned crooked or sideways in the jaw, keeping them from erupting into the mouth properly. Dr Ritika Arora added nine out of 10 patients have at least one. WHY REMOVE THEM? There are four unhealthy circumstances that might prompt your us to recommend removing your impacted wisdom teeth: • Healthy teeth can be damaged as impacted wisdom teeth push against your neighboring second molars. • Impacted wisdom teeth often become decayed or infected because they’re hard to reach with your toothbrush. • Bacteria around the impacted tooth can lead to gum disease and enter your bloodstream, adversely affecting your heart and other organs of your body. • Fluid-filled cysts or tumors occasionally form around the bottom of an impacted wisdom tooth, causing damage to the jawbone, nerves in the area and nearby teeth. THE BEST TIME TO REMOVE THEM According to Dr Ritika Arora, whenever you detect problems or feel that your wisdom teeth have the potential to create complications in your mouth, she will most likely suggest that you

wisdom teeth to fully erupt without interfering with your other teeth. But before you’re in the clear to keep them, we will want to make sure that they are functional and not affecting your bite. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL If the wisdom teeth are impacted and embedded in the bone, the oral surgeon will put an incision into the gums and remove the tooth or teeth in sections in order to minimize the amount of bone being removed. After surgery, swelling and tenderness in the face and neck are common, as is bruising. Ice packs and pain medications should help ease the pain. To help you avoid wisdom teeth problems, Dr Ritika Arora and her team of Specialist doctors at Aesthetic Smiles Dental Clinic will monitor these four teeth for any changes, by taking x-rays during regular checkup appointments. So, if you have reached “the age of wisdom” and are wondering, “should they stay or should they go,” you can rest assured there are options that can lead to a smart solution. Who needs

Bariatric (Weight loss) Surgery? AM I ‘FAT’? We Indians traditionally prefer to call ourselves ‘healthy’ rather than fat! Being overweight, obese or morbidly obese is not a matter of appearance but is an objective evaluation of height and weight. This is done by calculating the BMI (body mass index) along with absence of diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, sleep apnea, PCOS and so on. So for a person who is 5 foot 4 inches tall, a weight of 100 kilograms will be categorized as morbid obesity. While at the same weight, a 6-feet tall person would be measured as overweight.

WHAT IS ‘BARIATRIC SURGERY’? When someone has ‘class III obesity’ or is morbidly obese, they need to lose more than 30-50 kilograms or sometimes much more! Doing this with a diet & exercise program may be extremely frustrating and fruitless. Bariatric surgery is a group of operations performed on the stomach and intestines which reduces hunger,

22

makes one satisfied with small quantity of food without feeling starved. This creates a calorie deficit and helps burn the excess body fat and lose weight. Bariatric surgery not only reduces weight but also helps cure diabetes, PCOS, hypertension, sleep apnea, cholesterol problems, heart disease and many such problems associated with obesity.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY? Bariatric surgery is the beginning of a journey to weight loss. One starts losing weight over weeks and months for up to 2 years. After which one has to learn to maintain the weight. We have to be mindful about what we eat, though surgery does most of the work. Diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea start improving and one finds that over the coming months the medications may need to be reduced and subsequently stopped. Possibility of regaining significant weight over a long term is much less with Bariatric surgery as compared to diet & exercise regimen.

Dr Sharad Sharma is a Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgeon at MetaBariatric Clinic for Obesity & Metabolic Surgery, Mumbai.

HOW IS BARIATRIC SURGERY PERFORMED? Bariatric surgery is essentially a group of laparoscopic surgeries, performed through small holes (key hole surgery) in the abdomen. The commonly performed bariatric procedures are Laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, Laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass, Laparoscopic mini gastric bypass. There are many more variations a bariatric surgeon may advice depending on the medical conditions and dietary considerations.

WHO NEEDS BARIATRIC SURGERY? Any person who has a BMI of 37.5 or a BMI of 32.5 with obesity related diseases like diabetes, hypertension, PCOS, sleep apnea, dyslipdemia, osteoarthritis & has tried other ways to lose weight should strongly consider bariatric surgery. Dr Sharad Sharma is a Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgeon practicing in Mumbai.

Cooking for Rakhee began at a very young age of 11. “I always liked to make things taste good. So whenever I was served anything that did not fit my idea of tasty food, I would always venture out into the kitchen and make things taste the way I wanted it to.” Recalls Rakhee, as she smiles and talks about how she has been a foodie and

Determined to take her knowledge of food to better levels each time, Rakhee kept on evolving with time and has thus been certified by Le Cordon Bleu at Gordon Ramsay’s Tante Marie in London.

Whenever she visits a new restaurant, especially in a different country, her goal is to absorb as much as possible from the place, and them transfer her experience to her students. industry and the way we look at cooking has changed drastically. Everyone wants to eat good food, eat different food, and at Palate, her goal is to help her students attain the same. She specifically designs meals that can be taught over a couple of hours, and can be easily replicated. Apart from running Palate culinary studio, Rakhee recently acquired certification for the studio to provide the UK based CTH diploma and is the first place in the country to do so. Not only is she a great cook, but also rules the television industry with her shows such as ‘Rewind with Rakhee’ and ‘Yummy Treats’ on the newly opened food channel called, Living Foods. “Even when I am on camera, I like to teach rather than act. My portrayal of recipes is always easy as I consider the viewers to be my students. I want to add value to what they see and be able to make good food, even if it is just by watching.” This is her approach towards her television shows. That apart, in November 2015, she launched her book called ‘Picky Eaters’, a book that would solve the woes of all the moms who have to constantly deal with kids who are picky eaters. The book was extremely well received and is in fact a novelty in terms of concept. With so many feathers in the cap already, Rakhee’s vision for 2016 is that of a culinary school and we cannot wait to see how that turns out to be.

LL | community Entrepreneur Of The Hood Neha Sethi Founder of Sweetish House Mafia

CAPTURING THE WORLD, ONE COOKIE AT A TIME by Zeba Akhtar

One bite into the delicious cookies from Sweetish House Mafia is enough to set you drooling. I had always wondered about the master behind the yumminess, until I finally got to catch up with her for a quick chat, and here’s what she shared with us! What prompted you to begin SHM? After returning from New York post my education in finance at Wharton, I initially joined my father in the family business but that did not interest me either. Then I started an education software company but that didn’t go anywhere, so it was on to the next thing. After that, my brother-in-law and I started an education institute that hosted various classes for students such as Mandarin and CA but my heart wasn’t it. I still hadn’t found the one thing I would enjoy doing. That’s when my friend planted the idea of Sweetish House Mafia (SHM) in my mind - baking cookies and sending them out while announcing the location and delivery time via social media. He knew I was good at baking and was adamant I share my baking skills with the world! And that’s how SHM was born. How easy/difficult was the transition from being into the hardcore corporate world, to stepping on to the threshold of being an entrepreneur? It wasn’t that difficult since the hardcore corporate world didn’t really appeal to me to begin with. I realised pretty quickly that it wasn’t the industry I was meant to be in. I didn’t take instructions particularly well. I had to be in charge of my own work and that would only happen if I started off something on my own. Which is why, once I moved back to Bombay, most of the work I did revolved around starting off my own projects. Are you a foodie yourself? I wasn’t before but my husband converted me into one. Now we plan our holidays around food! Have you always been a baker, or was this a run off the mill idea that seeped in one fine day? I have never taken a professional course nor do I have any experience in this field. I used to help my mother bake in the kitchen when I was young and soon my mother realized that I could manage by myself so she just told me to bake her things for her parties. I guess I have liked baking since I was young

The key is to acknowledge it and to use that knowledge to keep improving yourself and stay relevant to your customers. What are your plans for the future with regards to SHM? Penetrating the Bombay market, then spreading across the country, and then finally going global. If you were to pick two favorites from the SHM menu, what would they be? Chocolate Chip and Double Chocolate Chip. As a woman, do you think the path to entrepreneurship is any different? Honestly, I know that I would have probably thought twice before starting SHM if I didn’t have my husband and family to fall back on. So maybe it is different in the sense that a woman would be willing to take the risk a little more easily than a man would. Tell us about one of your most amusing baking sessions!

but never considered myself to be a baker. I used to bake to feed the people around me, and myself. My career as a baker happened quite unexpectedly! The innovative concept of delivery vans: was that your idea initially or did you gradually dwell on to it? That was the entire premise of SHM. I was clear that I didn’t want a brick and mortar store. I didn’t want to get tied up in one location neither did I want to deal with the capital investment of setting up my own store. I liked the idea of being able to move around and go to my customers. The Nano is the core essence of SHM. It’s the reason SHM exists.

My initial days of baking when I used to send out the Nano were the most amusing. I used to bake out of my home kitchen with five Bajaj countertop ovens that used to produce about 6 cookies every 12 minutes or so. The race against the clock, not eating lunch, having my one man Friday run around with me making the dough, putting little dough balls on trays, pulling out baked cookies from the oven, all without letting anything get burnt or getting late was a feat that we managed to pull off every single time. To an outsider it would seem totally bizarre but to us it was exhausting yet entertaining!

Why the name, SHM? At the time I was starting SHM, the band ‘Swedish House Mafia’ had just performed in Bombay so it was fresh in everyone’s minds. My brother-in-law suggested the name ‘Sweetish House Mafia’ as a joke in reference to the band but I found it so amusing that I just knew this had to be it. I knew it would pull in the younger crowds who are familiar with the band, as they would find the name clever and funny. Those people were my target market. Over the past two years, the city has seen a gradual rise in the dessert scene. What are your thoughts on that? People in the city have started becoming more open to new tastes. They don’t mind experimenting with different flavours. Bakers have picked up on that and that’s why a lot of different people are being able to offer a lot more variety in dessert. It’s great for everyone because customers are getting to try new things and bakers can push their limits to offer varieties that would probably not have been accepted before. Plus, the bigger the market, the more room there is for everyone. How easy or difficult is to handle competition? I wouldn’t say it’s easy or difficult. Competition is always going to be there. It’s part and parcel of being in this industry. April 2016 | Volume 1 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition) 29

Dirt Remanufactured StartUpcycling Now (SUN) by Zeba Akhtar

In a day and age when the rat race seems enticing and a lucrative MBA degree may be the gateway to a comfortable lifestyle, it is easy to be lured. What is difficult is to throw away the dilemma and stand for something such as the environment. As they say, finding treasure in trash is a task that not many people have the skill for, but there is always someone who comes forward and rises to the occasion! This month we are featuring one such inspirational personality who has taken up the responsibility and is making the SUN shine for us brighter. Meet Natasha D’Costa, founder of SUN- Start Upcycling Now, an enterprise that is helping people handle their own waste and be more responsible about it. Curious to know her journey and aspirations, we got in touch with her for a quick chat! TELL US IN DETAILS ABOUT YOUR INTERESTS THAT BROUGHT YOU CLOSER TO SUN?

30

Oh yes I am. I have green fingers and toes! Since childhood, I would help my dad water our building garden in which we grew a host of fruits and vegetables.

I enjoy nature a n d architecture. Treks to waterfalls and forts have always intrigued me. In the last few years I have noticed the plastic bottle litter even at these not so frequented places increase substantially. That’s when I decided to empower people to make something useful with the plastic bottle rather than throwing it. Being a student of Interior design, I devoted my time to research on how we can use bottles into lights and furniture. WHERE YOU ALWAYS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ENTHUSIAST?

April 2016 | Volume1 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)

That’s also when I realized the importance of balance of our consumerism and nature. It sis so simple - When you take care of nature it takes care of you. WHAT MADE YOU GO BACK TO THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN DESPITE HAVING AN MBA? Although I enjoyed Human Resources, waking up on a Monday morning to go to work was never a happy feeling. After a lot of soul searching I decided to take a plunge and do something that I truly enjoyed. Although it was so unrelated it felt very right. So yes, I now look forward to every waking day to do what I love most; Upcycle our resources to conserve nature.

HOW IS SUN MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION? I am a city girl and I understand our city problems. Too much waste and what do we do with it? SUN a provider of energy, ensures the upcycling energy circulates HOW? 1) Food waste gets upcycled into compost; that is used to sustain urban gardens on terraces, balconies, windows walls, and compounds. 2) The garden is brought to life with upcycled lights and furniture made with glass and plastic bottles, bamboos and tyres. This way the circle of production and waste is closed at every school, society or organization. We also conduct workshops for corporate and schools so as to empower you to upcycle and see value in the goods around you!! HOW ARE YOU MIXING ART AND CONSERVATION IN THE SAME FRAME? I am an artist and conserving nature is something I deeply believe in. Hence the two of them are a bi product of my work.

We have a model green school – Auxilium Convent, Bandra west where the children have upcycled plastic bottles into green vertical walls, hedges, and art installations. Food waste was upcycled into compost and used to grow and sustain a vegetable /herb garden. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF SUN LOOKS LIKE? SUN’s vision is – Green Roof Cities. TELL US ABOUT HOW DOES SUN GO ABOUT IN TERMS OF ITS OPERATIONS AND WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT SERVICES/FEATURES LIKE? SUN offers a Consultation service for helping societies, schools and organizations to go green 1) We conduct a sensitizing workshop for the society /organization on how easy composting is. We understand their requirements and set up a

composting system accordingly. 2) We also set up urban gardens on terraces and compounds and provide mail service. 3) We create an interesting ambience with upcycled lights and furniture. HOW HAS THE RESPONSE TO SUN BEEN LIKE? I am happy to say that today people are taking green steps to improve the space they live in, a lot of schools and corporate are eager to promote upcycling activities. IF YOU HAD TO GIVE OUT ONE MESSAGE TO OUR READERS, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? SUN stands for Start Upcycling Now – We have many Do It Yourself kits to empower You to grow your own Micro greens and herbs, make your own upcycled lampshades, etc. Its power to You !!!

The plastic bottle seats, glass bottle upside down and desktop planters provide a different way of view and using items. HOW EASY OR DIFFICULT WAS IT TO BEGIN WITH

“I DECIDED TO EMPOWER PEOPLE TO MAKE SOMETHING USEFUL WITH THE PLASTIC BOTTLE RATHER THAN THROWING IT.”

SOMETHING OF YOUR OWN? It has been a rippling effect for me. I started small doing exactly what I liked. I conducted a lot of awareness drives through my installations. I designed my own plastic bottle mountain at Kala Ghoda in 2013.

Hi Guys! It’s April! Who wants to be foolish this month? By the way have you ever imagined why April 1st is celebrated as a fool day? Well, the history goes back to France sometime in 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. So, all the people were not aware of this big change and the news that New Year day had been moved to January 1. There were still some people who were celebrating April 1st as their New Year day thereby becoming the butt of the jokes. Funny! Alright! Time to unquote some quotes, but this time I am in no serious mood so let’s have some fun this April… Every time I lose some weight, I find it again in the refrigerator EVERY GIRLS STORY! Or just let’s say many people will relate to this one. Raising my both the hands and nodding my head up and down and screaming - 1000% I relate to this! No matter how much I exercise or do yoga or go for walk or play any sport, somehow I end up eating more and more because my brain is not my control and it says “Omg, you lost so many calories lets regain them and have that awesome sweet waiting for you in the refrigerator!” And if this is not less than my favorite chips will be crying for me from the supermarket and I end up consoling them by eating them too! And oops the story goes on and on and on and so the calorie intake. MATH – Mental Abuse to Humans Not being rude, this is applicable for me and you can just tag yourself if too can relate to this. Till now in my life I have not used algebra, I have not used trigonometry, Pythagoras theorem etc. The things that use in my daily life are + - */ %. Then why I was taught such difficult terms. STUDENTS, I have been through this, but you shouldn’t read this quote as it may harm your exams!

Today I am as motivated as the designer of the Japanese flag All the Japanese people if you are here in India please do not take this personally. But sometimes the motivation levels are just like flat and plain and you just don’t want to do anything, but slouching in your bed or couch watching random channels on idiot box, eating chips and having soft drink and not worrying about anything. Do you go through that phase? I do! It’s that boring phase of our lives where the clock stops ticking, wind stops blowing; birds stop chirping and sun stops shining. But as Albert Einstein has correctly quoted: The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits Going by this quotes, let’s get our motivation levels higher and start to stop being stupid and focus on by Divya Panday the right things. Have an awesome April.

HER FORTIES, THE STORY OF THE HELMET GIRL BANDRA IS RATHER AMUSING. THE NATURAL QUESTION I COULD NOT HELP ASKING HER WAS, HOW DID YOU COME AROUND TO THE IDEA OF THE HELMET GIRL? “WELL THE QUESTION HAS BEEN ASKED SO MANY TIMES THAT IT NO LONGER FEELS SPONTANEOUS. HOWEVER, THE BEGINNING FOR ME WAS WHEN I GOT MYSELF THIS (POINTING TOWARDS HER HELMET) COOL HELMET FROM AMAZON. The Perks Of The Helmet

Helmet Girl Bandra When her new helmet arrived, she began randomly taking selfies with it and sent it to a couple of friends. Some were as basic as her wearing the helmet and lounging on the sofa! Her bemused friends encouraged her to keep entertaining them with her funny posts, and thus, a small in-group banter turned into a trend and Lisa has now become Helmet Girl Bandra.

impact on young minds. Originally, from Sri Lanka, Lisa has lived in Calcutta, studied in Pune, and ended up working and getting married in Mumbai. She recalls being a reckless teenager despite the fact that her parents were always value oriented. Her goal is to be a friend to young kids today and tell them about the pros and cons of the many decisions they make at this age.

“When I started posting pictures of myself with the helmet, I saw people becoming curious about it. Gradually my following across social media skyrocketed, and I began to be recognized while walking the streets. Such popularity does not come to many, and I realized why not churn in into something constructive.” Explains Lisa, as she takes us through her vision for Helmet Girl Bandra.

“When you are young, you do not weigh risks very well. Being carried away is the norm, and even I have been on that boat. I do not wish to be a preacher or a counselor. I just want to use my blog to tell the youngsters of today about my own experiences and show them a way to learn from it for themselves.” Says Lisa, who has been approached by different NGO’s as well as publications to ally for her message.

Lisa does not think of herself as a celebrity, but understands the value of her popularity. Apart from the usual fun and frolic that she keeps up across different locations in Bandra, she thinks her “madness has a message.” Lisa does not want to be another run off the mill social media rage, but wants to go out there and make an

When she first started off, even her family members had no clue what she was up to. Later on, her children thought what she was doing was ‘cool’ and hence even they began joining her for her different events. The helmet is the natural and obvious symbol for safety. But Lisa does not

just want to limit herself to safety. “My message is not just restricted to road safety, even though my first blog post is about an accident that I almost scraped through. I want to talk to kids about education, teen pregnancy, alcohol, drug abuse and all the other residues of growing up. Turning away from these issues is not the right way to handle it and I want to use my following to make sure that my voice reaches out to these kids.” Lisa plans to channelize her blog post into different topics and address as many topics as she can. “I need people to help me help them. I can relate to kids, and my following is specifically in the bracket of school to college kids. And there is no better way to create an impact than to use humour.” From cyclathons related to the environment, to marathons for Autism, the Helmet Girl Bandra is being invited to most events, clearly for her appeal to most causes, and has her hands full with different things to do. Comic books have seen super heroes in capes, and now Bandra is all set and cheery with its super woman in a helmet!

o The hood of Bandra has been dotted with history. Be it old churches, a promenade looking to the sea since forever, or quaint houses that boasts of generations coming together. One such heritage site in the middle of the Bandra West is the two hundred year old Bandra Talao. The Bandra Talao is situated towards the other end of Bandra close to Mahim. It was formerly known as the Lotus Tank and is a grade two-heritage structure. Spread across a massive 7.5 acres, the Bandra Talao was built initially by a Konkani Muslim of Navpada, which used to be an adjoining village at that point of time. The lake eventually fell into negligence and later on the upkeep was taken up by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. It was renamed Swami Vivekanand Sarovar. A couple of years ago, the Bandra Talao came in the news for various maintenance projects that were being centered around it. One such project was The Bandra Talao Project. The idea of the Bandra Talao Project is to extend the edge of the Talao and give the people of Bandra a public space free of cars in the middle of the suburb. By proposing a 350m underpass for vehicular traffic along

the Talao and extending the existing edge of the Talao onto the street, a new urban space of 2 acres can be created alongside 7.5 acres of the lake, which is free from vehicles, traffic noise, air pollution and encumbrances. All this can be achieved without land acquisition. The underpass allows for uninterrupted flow of traffic. It benefits not only the citizens but also the environment by providing them a green open space in the middle of hyper urbanism. Other plans to rejuvenate the talao included the addition of paddle boating services, which used to be a major attraction initially. In addition, other plans such as a water fountain as well as a walkway promenade were also in the plan. However, the beautification of the talao was not an easy process.

It ran into major delays initially. Once the project began, there were issues of hindering the natural habitat of trees as the base of over fifty old trees had been coated with concrete, which caused many activists to raise their voices. That apart, the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee has also raised accusations that the walkway will create a reduction in the size of the lake, and also that the amphitheater being made for the musical fountain will also reduce the size of the lake. These hurdles have added further delay to the beautification of the lake. The makeover, which has been going on for the past eight months, is schedule to end by the first week of April. Let’s hope that this time it is inaugurated without any further delays!

016 seems to already be a year of some fascinating cricket for the country! From the Asia Cup, to the T20 World Cup, and now the upcoming Indian Premiere League! This seems to be a great time for cricket buffs to have some fun! The 2016 Indian Premiere League or IPL as we fondly call it has a lot of different twists and turns. With Pepsi withdrawing as title sponsors, the new sponsorship claim has been taken up by VIVO. Also, much to the credit of evolution and the inclusion of other cities into the league, we have two new teams, Gujarat Lions and Pune Supergiants! With the action commencing on the 9th of April, we cannot wait to see who takes the prized trophy home this year. The best part is that the first match begins in our very own Mumbai. Mumbaikars, have another reason to rejoice!

Just like our readers, even we are extremely excited about the upcoming cricketing madness, and have a lot of Only IPL Ideas running through our brains! Here’s sharing a few of the cool ideas that you can adopt to have some more fun during the IPL! • Grab your buddies and take them to match screenings! So what if you could not manage the tickets to the stadium. Catch hold of your gang and

hit the closest chilling spots. Most pubs and lounges have exclusive offers for match screenings, so make sure you do not miss them! Celebrate the spirit at home! Who said only going out can be fun. Dish up a few snacks, and cooling cocktails (or whatever it is that you fancy), dress up in your team jersey and watch the match with your close ones at home. Nothing beats the tiny discussions that take place at every commercial break! You can also make you city specific food to support your team! If you happen to be the ones to watch the action live at the stadium, then do not forget to carry your team props, and flags! Even face paintings look cool. Make sure you take enough snaps. After all, making memories is what matters the most! Tweet it out! Yes, twitter is a crazy place to be during IPL and make sure you catch on to all the fun tweets! Also, participate in all the cool IPL contests that keep taking place every now and then! O r g a n i z e your own tournaments. Yes! What better than to get into the field yourself, with some weekend gully cricket action just to rekindle the spirit of the game!

Whatever be your pick, we are sure that it is going to be a great time!

DO NOT TAKE THE PLANET FOR GRANTED !

EARTH DAY W

ell, more often than not, we have wondered what exactly are we doing with the planet we live on!

Celebrities, NGO’s, as well as the common man have stood up time and again to volunteer to protect the earth we live on, not just for ourselves, but also for out forthcoming generations! For the past forty five years, 22nd of April has been celebrated as World Earth Day. A day, where we honor, respect and vow to protect where we live. After all, the Earth is the only planet that has oxygen on it! Let’s know a little bit more about what exactly does the Earth Day imply, and how we can do our significant little bit for the same! The Earth Day organization has been down to a mission. The goal is to plant approximately 7.8 billion trees until the next five years. They are calling out for donations as well as tree planting sessions. After all, the rate at which we have been producing carbon dioxide

sure does need some salvaging! Waste, not only in terms of gases, but also in terms of solid waste is a major issue that has been the sole cause of different diseases, habitat destruction, as well as pollution. As citizens, it is our duty to manage waste effectively. Do not fill your plate up with the food you can’t finish, and do not use plastic when you can use bio-degradable materials. The key to minimize waste comes from the three requisite R’s. Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle! Yes, reduce the waste you create in the first place. Things such as cloth bags, paper bags and even used plastic bags need not be discarded, they can be used repeatedly. Similarly, there are a large number of ways to make compost at home and recycle your waste. Why litter when you can save? Do little deeds! More often than not, we think that only major environment conservation programs can be of help. However, just imagine that if everyone

on the earth starts doing his or her little bit, the impact shall be massive. Start with simple things such as turning the tap off while brushing, or taking carpooling instead of driving alone in a car, or switching off the lights and fans while leaving the room. The earth has a limited supply of everything; make sure you use it to the best capacity! Teach and spread awareness! Yes, this is the most basic, and the most vital bit. Most of us do not even know about the hazards we pose to the earth. If you know about these things, then the first step is to educate others. Children need to be taught the importance of respecting their surroundings, and will eventually grow up with a caring attitude towards nature. Most importantly, practice. Only preaching will not do. You have to practice and lead by example, because after all, we are all in this together! As Leonardo Di Caprio mentioned in his Oscar speech, “Do not take the planet for granted!”

TAROTSCOPE YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 2016

THE YEAR AHEAD FOR ARIES Happy Birth Anniversary! If you have new ideas which you want to develop, this year is good for all foundational work. You are in a good place to learn new things, whether as education or incidentally. Health will respond positively to practical care. Finances will be much the same. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Your good ideas can have a worthy start now. You will need to pay attention to laying a stable foundation, and friends will be of great help here. Trust your earlier experiences, and other people’s advice, too. Health and finances will be good, with practical care.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): Between your friends and you, is promised a hugely comfortable, entertaining and happy time, this month. You will get to indulge yourself and you will have great company for that. Be active to be healthy and spend wisely to make the best of finances.

GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): Your willingness to gather information will help you this month to have a good time. Not much of what you plan will be done, but you will get amazing insights into the way people rather different from you conduct their matters. Health will need you to be careful about diet. Finances need a generally careful attitude. CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): With a little bit of grounded common sense, you can have the best of times this month. You will be able to make real much of what you engage with. The pace of things happening around you will also be suitable to your nature. Friends will be very supportive. Health will be good and finances stable.

40

LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): You are tuned in to enthusiastic energies, this month, but don’t make it all about work or achieving goals. You will gain far more by letting yourself have fun, and allowing friendly folks closer into your arena. Health will benefit from conventional care. Finances may experience expenditure, so make it work for you. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): If you hold on to the worthiness of your innate nature, and do not become ungrounded under any circumstances, this is all the work you need to do to have a great month. All things will eventually go your way. You can have a good and worthwhile time with friends you trust. Practise the familiar for good health and stable finances. LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

You are in a good place this month to practise your core beliefs, irrespective of what you experience. The good is that you will be able to effect changes you desire; the catch is that you will be working on edge while you do it. Trust your guardian angel that you will come through. Health will benefit from meditative and pleasurably gentle activities, as will finance!

SCORPIO

(October 23rd November 22nd):

You could be in for exciting times, though not much will be visible externally… a bit like falling in love! Relaxing and allowing the good things of life to influence you now will be of benefit. Health will gain energy from reliable practices. Finances can remain stable, though expenditure rises. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):

Your tremendous joie de vivre is pure positive potential energy. However, this month, please explore the way other people work. You stand to gain knowledge of long-term benefit. Health will need care for diet and emotions. Finances can remain stable.

CAPRICORN

(December 22nd–January 19th):

You are familiar with the rush of great ideas, but you are also practical to the point of being responsible for giving those great ideas a good foundation. This is your work this month. You will gain in exact terms, also in matters of health and finances. So orientate yourself to the higher good. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): Rely on your great understanding of what is suitable, to make a good deal out of this month. You will sense an underlying enthusiasm, but you may have to wait to express it. Practising patience will be beneficial for everyday life, health and finances.

PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): If you stay away from planmaking and goal-setting, you will achieve far more this month. It is not a paradox, but an alignment to your tendencies of flowing with your nature. Allow friends who ground you to help you. Health and finances will benefit from familiar and practical care.
