Selfish by Nature We as humans are known to be selfish by nature. There is a tendency of questioning most of the things with respect to what comes in return. “What’s in it for me?”. For long I have seen social activists, people fighting for different causes- be it for other people, animals or nature. Would you say they are Selfish by nature in their seemingly selfless act? YES, I think so. Read on... The ‘What’ in the “What’s in it for me?” is not necessarily of monetary value. It could be a simple feeling of Pleasure or plain Satisfaction. Would you watch a movie that you don’t want to watch? Probably not ‘cause it won’t give you the pleasure that a movie of your choice would have. But, would you watch the same movie for a loved one if they wanted to? Probably Yes. But wait. Before you go all “I did this for you” over your loved one, think about it. Would you have done it for someone you didn’t care about. NO. You did it for your loved one because you DID get something in return. It’s the ‘pleasure’ of seeing a loved one happy. Your little so called Selfless act was in fact a selfish act of giving yourself that pleasure of seeing your loved one happy. I know it doesn’t sound fair. It’s deep ;). I went to cover the Angel Xpress Foundation that teaches underprivileged kids after finding about their noble cause. My initial Selfish intention – an article for the community section of this magazine. After seeing the Volunteer teachers of different age-groups giving their time to educate these beautiful kids I felt the need to make sure that their message gets across and they get the visibility for their cause. Now this was a Selfless intention on my part. Wrong. No matter who I convince that it was a Selfless intention it wasn’t. Why? Because I was getting something in return which made me want to do this even more. I was getting the Pleasure of being part of a cause that in my inherent nature had always been close to my heart. I have childhood memories of seeing my mother, who is a retired school teacher, teach the underprivileged kids. Today there is no better satisfaction than doing my bit towards a cause that I have seen dearly for a long time. Go be part of these noble causes, give your time to the needy, volunteer for some non-profit organization, work for something for free, give charity. These are the best Selfish acts with the highest returns that no other action can give – Pleasure and Satisfaction.

CONQUERING THE FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING by Avneet Kohli

A recent study at Oxford proved that 86 % of people fear Public speaking. Public speaking is the most common of all phobias. It’s a form of performance anxiety in which a person becomes very concerned that he or she will look visibly anxious and fumble when put in spotlight. In some cases the fear is deep rooted that people encounter a panic attack at the very thought of it. Here are some constructive ways to calm those nerves and prepare you to face an audience confidently. Do not equate public speaking with your self-worth

Know your material

Whether you are good at public speaking or not has nothing to do with your value as a person. Noone is born a great speaker. It is a skill that you can learn and become better at with practice.

It’s always easier to pick a topic that you have some interest in or are passionate about. If not, take the effort to gain as much knowledge using reference books and the internet. Being well read, makes talking about the subject easier. However, whats most important is to validate the information you find. Different websites can give you different information. Be certain of the facts. You don’t want someone in your audience, standing up to prove you wrong.

Practice, Practice, Practice! The mirror is your best friend. It is important to rehearse and not to memorize. Stand in front of a mirror and rehearse out loud with everything you plan on using. Notice your expressions; eye contact and body movements. Keep track of the number of times you use filler words like Uh, umm, like, because etc in your speech and work to control them. The odds are that if you slip up, the only person who will realize is you, and that’s where rehearsing and not memorizing helps. If you learn it by heart, you are sure to panic in case you forget a single word. The audience is quick to pick up on that unease which will to them, translate to ill preparedness. Stick with what you know, go with the flow and rehearse!

Know the audience Make eye contact with the audience when you enter the room and even when you’re speaking. It gives them the impression that you’re comfortable and confident. It also has the added bonus of making the audience feel involved and important. Relax

Reach early. Familiarize yourself with the space that you have. Make sure all your visual aids (if any), are working, and get ready for your moment.

Start by taking 3 deep breaths to calm your nerves before you get on stage and once there begin by addressing the audience and introducing yourself. It buys you time to survey the crowd and calm your nerves. Smile, pause and then begin is the mantra .

Realize that people want you to succeed

Concentrate on the message – not the medium

The audience clearly wants you there and is interested in what you have to say, is something you need to condition your mind to believe.

Keep yourself focused on the subject and your audience. Focus on what you are trying to convey to them, as opposed to thinking about your own anxieties.

Do not over think the audience reaction

Gain experience

Remember that even if you see people looking at you and think you are weird, ignore it. You see someone yawning, smile. What they think doesn’t matter. If there really is something that you know you are doing wrong, fix it as quick as possible.

There’s a reason they still say ‘Practice makes Perfect’. The best way to get rid of any fear or discomfort is to take the leap and speak in public whenever possible. It will be difficult the first couple of times, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Know the room

12GUIDELINES TO DRESS SLIM by Guari Gupta 1. WEAR FOUNDATION GARMENTS: Wear it under any dress and your figure will look flawless. Also known as Shapewear. 2. WEAR VERTICAL STRIPES: Keeps the eye moving up and down hence have an elongating effect which makes one look taller and slimmer. The closer they are spaced together, the slimmer one will look. 3. WEAR MONOCHROMATIC OUTFITS: One color head to toe. These outfits help our body frame to look longer, leaner, simple and chic. A monochromatic scheme consists of numerous shades(darker) and tints(lighter) of the same hue. 4. WEAR FITTED SKIRT: Choose an A-LINE cut in a medium to heavy material to look slimmer. Avoid very soft clingy fabric like silk. The A-LINE style obscures an unattractive shape, accentuates everything above the waist. Skirts that are mid-calf style are the most flattering. 5. WEAR SEMI-FITTED CLOTHING: The biggest mistake we make is wearing clothes that are big for us. It does not camouflage the size issues, but in reality larger clothes end up making us look even bigger. 6. WEAR SMALL TO MEDIUM SCALE PATTERNS AND SOLID COLORS: Any pattern which is too large can be overwhelming or create the appearance of largeness on you. Color black is boring. Try other dark neutrals like charcoal and dark emerald. 7. POINTED TOE HEELS: They are more effective in creating a slender vertical appearance while thick platforms can make your feet look weighted and heavy. 8. LONG NECKLACE: It will visually stretch one out for a taller appearing figure. 9. HAIRSTYLE: Hairstyle with some volume and uplift lines to balance the body. Hair that extends several inches above the head adds inches to your height. 10. GOOD POSTURE: Looks perfect on any body shape and size. Don’t slouch while standing or sitting and one will look slimmer. 11. CREATE DIVERSIONARY TACTICS: Use of accessories, interesting necklines, bright color to attract attention away from bulges and towards whatever part of your body one wants to emphasize, like your pretty face or waistline.

10

12. ACHIEVE BALANCE IN YOUR SILHOUETTE: If you are top -or bottom-heavy the best thing one can do is balance out your silhouette by adding a little volume to your smaller half.

Is it better to

look good or

feel good?

Both, when you're pondering Pedicures

(BPT) - Whether you're getting ready for a romantic evening out, or looking ahead to when sandal days are back again, treating your feet to a pedicure can help you look and feel your best - as long as you keep foot health front of mind. It's important to ensure your pedicure is done properly, whether you're doing it yourself at home or enjoying a professional treatment in a nail salon or spa. The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) offers some pedicure pointers to help you love how your feet look and feel:

* Start with a good soak in warm water for at least five minutes. This will help soften calluses and prep feet for removing dry, rough skin. To exfoliate, use a pumice stone or foot file. Never use a foot razor to remove dead skin, and ban your pedicurist from using one on you. It's too easy for a quick slip-up that could cause permanent damage or lead to serious infection.

* Never permit a nail technician to cut or trim cuticles, which protect nail beds from bacteria. Instead, use a rubber cuticle pusher or liquid remover to gently push back cuticles just a little bit. Use a wooden or rubber manicure stick - never metal or anything sharp - to clean beneath nails.

* Shave your legs a day or two before your professional pedicure, but not the day of. Shaving can cause minor abrasions and fissures in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter while your feet soak or the nail technician handles your feet. A little bit of stubble won't bother her at all.

* Remove polish after it's been on for a while. Keeping nails polished for extended periods may promote fungal growth. Leave toe nails polish-free for a few days between pedicures.

* Post pedicure, don't walk around in flimsy flip-flops, especially the ones salons sometimes give customers before they leave. They don't provide adequate protection or support for your feet.

* When doing a home pedicure, use toenail clippers with a straight edge and cut nails straight across. Avoid other cutting tools, such as manicure scissors, as they can increase the risk of ingrown nails. For salon pedicures, bring your own tools; shared tools can spread bacteria if they haven't been properly cleaned. Use an emery board to smooth and round nail edges.

* Look for foot-friendly products that have earned the APMA's Seal of Acceptance or Approval. Podiatrists have evaluated these products and found them to be beneficial to foot health.

Finally, never put up with foot pain. Discomfort and pain that lasts longer than several days could be a sign of a more serious problem or infection. Seek treatment from a podiatrist - the foot and ankle expert.

FLAT FEET..??

Losing Your Foot Prints... Dr Sarika Jambhulkar. M. PTh.Consultant Practicing Podiatry Dr Vilas Jambhulkar. M.O.Th. (Neurosciences) Feet are amazing structure, which connects our body to the earth. They are the foundation of our body. It is important to pay close attention for their health. If the base of the body (Feet) is altered, then it affects all proximal joints i.e. ankle, knee, hip, pelvis & spine. Most of us have a small gap under our feet even when we stand, which is called an arch. People who have no arch at all i.e. FLAT FEET and/or people with REDUCED ARCH (very slight gap under feet) have a tendency to shift their weight to the inner side while standing or walking leading to what is known as OVERPRONATION. More than 75 % people have the problem of flat feet or reduced arches which results in overpronation. Now a days, amongst the new generation, incidence of flat feet is more prominent because their ligaments are not strong enough (ligament laxity). The reason of laxity is that they are spending maximum time on hard surfaces (pavements, tiles etc.) which interferes with the development of the arch. NATURE V/S CIVILISATION. • • • • • • • • • What is the solution? If we take ten people with flat feet, each will have different complaints, a different lifestyle. So the treatment varies with person to person. Following are some common guidelines: • Using proper supportive shoes with firm ankle control • Wear correct size footwear as per your length & width • Avoid bare feet walking on hard surface. • Exercises for strengthening of foot muscles. • Proper evaluation is recommended after which your foot doctor can recommend you suitable orthotics & footwear. • Maintain your weight. Myth: Flexible shoes are good for feet..!Then what type of shoe is right for you..? You may have many other questions like this. Feel free to send your queries on doctor@vcarerehab.in. We will give you answer in next month Q & A section. 16

CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE COSMETIC TREATMENT Dr. Anshuman Manaswi, MS. M.Ch. Consultant Plastic & cosmetic surgeon, Bombay Hospital Email : dramanaswi@yahoo.com

With growing awareness about the options available about the cosmetic treatments and with increasing availability of such treatments, there is a need to be more judicious and knowledgeable about the same. With growth of genuine treatment centres, come many more who want to take advantage of the lax rules in India and the inadequate knowledge of the clients. We try here to guide you to safe cosmetic treatments – both non surgical and surgical. Here are some points to ponder before you go for any cosmetic treatments next time. I. Cosmetic clinics are different from beauty parlours. So they have to offer something different. As a general rule, beauty parlours are competent to give only milder treatment which generally should not have danger of any side-effects. Most of the creams and facials which are used for beauty treatment have very lower concentration of chemicals. Ask your therapist for any side effects and read about the ingredients. Don’t ask your beauty therapist to do aggressive treatment because they can’t manage the side effects. II. Who is a cosmetologist? A cosmetologist is a doctor who is qualified enough to give medical beauty treatment. Unfortunately In India we do not have strict rules. MBBS ( Allopathy graduates), MD ( dermatologists), M.Ch. ( Cosmetic and plastic surgeons), Ayurveda doctors(BAMS), homeopaths(BHMS), Unani doctors( BUMS), all practise cosmetology! What is their training and experience? In my opinion a qualified dermatologist or a plastic surgeon can only take decisions about the kind of treatment which should be offered to patients. Rest others can assist them. Pending proper training programme authorised by the medical universities, it is good to play safe. Make it a point to ask for the qualification and training. As of today, many so called cosmetologists with minimal training are operating in absence of strict rules, it is best to be aware to avoid them. III. Advertisements: Medical council of India prevents allopathic doctors to advertise directly. But Ayurvedic, Homeopathic and Unani doctors don’t come under the purview of the MCI and hence these doctors can advertise! This actually means that the qualified dermatologists and plastic surgeons can’t advertise. Cosmetic centres ( without Doctor’s name) can advertise. So next time you see an advertisement, ask yourself: “ Am I looking at the right one?” And when you go to any centre, make sure you are in the right hands. IV. Cost: More the availability, more is the competition and competitive i the cost. But this is only half truth. Cost can’t be a priority over your safety. There are frivolous advertisement offering lowest cost. Don’t fall prey to them? Do you know, that cost of hair transplant varies from Rs. 20 per hair to Rs. 100 per hair. There has to be some difference! And it is not just competition! Cost of treatment by a qualified doctor using good products and machines is generally higher than the so called qualified. Quality comes with a price and your body is priceless! 18

V. Guarantee: Lot of clients come to me asking for a guarantee. I don’t give. Only an ignorant person or who is out there to make only money, keeping the ethics out, can give guarantee. There are various factors which affect healing and many have to do with patient’s healing ability, skin quality, scarring tendency, nutritional status etc. Then there are limitations of surgeries and machine. It is better to discuss the results than to ask for guarantee. Also, what has gone wrong with your body or skin over the years because of natural aging, neglect or abuse, can’t be corrected totally on many occasions. Trying to fulfil over expectation often harms. VI. Research: Before you go to any doctor, research. Try to find the qualifications and credentials of the doctor. Read about your procedure, but don’t overdo it. Have a basic idea about the procedure, about its side effects and what to expect. But remember human body is not a robot. In medicine 2+2 don’t make 4 most of the times. So discuss with the doctor well and understand. Look at the body language of the doctor. Look at his confidence and ask even stupidest questions. VII. Doctors are also human beings. Respect their body and mind. Keep your appointments on time. Don’t see a tired surgeon or physician because their efficiency decreases. VIII. Don’t fall in the trap of glamour. A good clinic is what is decent, has qualified personals and has the required facilities not necessarily a five star facility. A glamorous centre can be good but check if this is not there to cover up the suboptimal quality of the treatment. Remember, you are there for treatment, and not just for hospitality. IX. When you go for cosmetic surgery, make up your mind as to what you want. Read about the procedure so that you can make intelligent conversation. Choose a cosmetic surgeon (qualified plastic surgeon) and not a cosmetologist ( physician). Ask the doctor as to who will be operating and insist on direct consultation. This is likely to prevent you from unethical practice and also likely to reduce your cost by avoiding the middle men. Be safe than sorry. Be in good hands.

HAIR Myths and FACTS

MYTH 1: Some shampoos cause hair fall and some shampoos reduce hair fall.

Fact: False. Shampoos can neither reduce hair fall, nor cause hair fall. Role of a shampoo is cleansing of hair and scalp and it works only on the surface. Harsh shampoos can cause hair breakage but not hair fall from the roots. Gentle shampoos will prevent this breakage, but not hair fall. Hair growth is cyclical - it goes through growth stage, resting stage and shedding stage. Hair fall from the roots when they are in shedding stage. These hair will shed either on comb, pillow or while washing or conditioning. A shampoo with heavier conditioner may give the feeling of more hair fall, whereas another shampoo may give the feeling of lesser hair fall. But these shedding stage hair would then shed during combing or oiling. For effective hair fall control, one needs to get to the root cause of hair fall and correct it. A few of the common root causes are nutritional deficiencies, illnesses, child birth and hormonal imbalances. Then, one needs to strengthen and nourish the hair roots and follicles from within. This requires well-balanced nutrition and treatments that improve the blood circulation and deliver nutrients at the root of the hair.

by Dr. Snehal Sriram Medical Director snehal@trica.in

MYTH 2: The only way to get lost hair back is hair transplant surgery.

MYTH 3: I have no problem with my hair, hence I don’t need any special hair health maintenance.

MYTH 4: Oiling provides adequate nourishment to the hair root.

Fact: False. Non-surgical treatments, too, can certainly revive and regrow the hair, especially if started early. Hair transplant surgery can work in later stages, with its own limitations.

Fact: False.

Fact: False. Oiling does coat and condition the hair and penetrates to some extent, it does not provide comprehensive nutrition required for hair growth.

Medical non-invasive technologies for hair growth have now advanced significantly. Non-surgical treatments like Biogenesis(TM) and Nutri-drive(TM) work at the level of hair follicle. Delivering nutrients at the hair root and stimulating body’s own natural hair growth factors, they can revive and regrow the hair. Comprehensive, tailor-made scalp care system can gently exfoliate, deep cleanse and regenerate the scalp, thus creating healthy soil for healthy hair roots. These together can give the desired rich and healthy hair. The key to hair restoration is early, holistic, customised treatments. 20

Hair Problems originate at the level of hair follicles, that is deep inside and invisible. By the time, this problem starts surfacing in the form of hair loss, hair fall or other hair issues, there is a time lag of several months. Hence the intensity of treatments needed at that time is much more compared to what would have taken to nip the issue in the bud had we identified the concern earlier. A regular hair consultation gives us the understanding of what our unique hair and scalp needs are. And all it takes to improve your hair health in most cases is a three-pronged approach - right balanced nutrition, right hair care products and most importantly, healthy scalp to enrich hair roots.

Our hair needs 14 different nutrients to grow. Most of these come through our diet or vitamin supplements. Especially essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, biotin, calcium pantothenate. Deficiency of any of these can cause hair fall or other problems like dry hair, flaking or dandruff. Oiling the hair by itself is not enough to take care of these issues. Depending on one’s hair needs, we may need diet changes, nutritional supplements or even Nutri-Drive(TM) to deliver the nutrients at hair roots.

BASICS OF FITNESS by celebrity trainer/ nutritionist Sandeep Sachdev

CONCEPT 1:Do you know what you mean by BMR? Basal Metabolic Rate = the number of calories your body burns when your heart is at rest. So even while you sleep your body is burning calories because your heart is pumping. BMR is important to understand as it is co-related with both diet and exercise. Everyone has a different BMR. It’s important for you to know yours. My BMR is 2200 Calories. This means that if I consume 2200 calories of food in the form of Carbohydrates, Proteins & Fat in the day, then I should not put on or lose any weight. One should eat as much as their BMR if they want to maintain their current weight. Now if I burn calories at the gym by working out (both cardiovascular as well as weight training, individually or combined), that will get added to the 2200 calories (my BMR) that I would otherwise normally burn during the day. So, if you burn 1000 calories every day (7000 calories a week), it will result in a weight loss of 1 kg a week (for every 7000 calories you burn 1 kg fat). The faster you burn 7000 calories, the faster you lose weight. Simple to understand?? Simply put the calories you need to burn towards weight loss can be calculated as: (BMR – Diet) – Exercise = Calories lost towards weight loss. So if your BMR is 1800 calories, your diet is 1800 calories and you burn 1000 calories through exercise per day, your total calories towards weight loss would be: (1800-1800) – 1000 = -1000 calories burnt. Here is an example of a friend who had consulted me about his diet: Now as per his diet he was consuming a minimum of 3000 calories per day( it is also important that the consumption of carbs, proteins & fats are also in proportion). His BMR was 1500 calories, and he did not work out. So if we apply (BMR-Diet) - Exercise, then: (1500-3000)- 0= +1500 Which means that he was putting on weight rather than losing. 22

One of the main reasons I changed from a career in banking to a career in fitness is that I want use my experiences and knowledge to help people get fit. And the good news is that it is not difficult. While I was on the Biggest Loser, we were really educated and were made to understand things while we were losing weight. Every day, every session, every moment I learnt something thanks to the entire team there. Today, I am just trying to simplify those concepts for everyone, because I know that once I understood them, I also understood how I could lose weight and remain fit for life. Please throw in as many questions you would like to, & please remember no question is silly. I hope these 2 concepts which form the basis of fitness would really help you.

CONCEPT 2: NUTRITION Now that you understand, I will explain Carbs, Proteins and Fats, about why you need to eat 6 a day, and how to use the energy you get from food for working out. The body’s only source of Energy is Food. Carbs and Fats are the prime providers of that energy. Only when there is an insufficient supply of Carbs and Fats to the body, will the body use Proteins. Proteins are mainly used for Muscle enhancement & maintenance. Right from the time we wake up, our body requires energy every 2.5-3 hours. This energy only comes from food which means that you need to consume food 6-7 times a the day depending on what time you start and finish your day. Whether you feel hungry or not, you need to eat every 2.5 hours Most people only have 3 meals a day. If you are consuming ‘X’ CALORIES over 3 meals, you need to spread the same ‘X’ number of calories over 6 meals. A common thumb rule for composition is 55% Carbs, 35% Proteins & 15% Fat=100% . If you dont give your body food every 2.5 hrs then you will be using the energy from the protein in your body (i.e ur muscle), which is not good. this means it will take you longer to build that lean body. Now, when you workout, its just important for you to understand one concept, which is that when one starts working out, the body first uses its Glycogen stores ( Carbs), then it uses the Fat Stores & only if the stores of Carbs & Fat get over will it attack Muscle. Many Gym-goers make the mistake of first doing cardio exercises for 30 minutes & then weights. This is wrong because they are using their glycogen stores while doing cardio and don’t have enough energy to lift weights efficiently. When you work out with weights, start with a quick warm up (10 minutes), then do your weight training (use your carbs here). You can do your cardio later, if you want (where you use ur fat stores). If you are doing cardio then make sure you dont exceed more than 20-30 minutes because then your body will start use proteins after that. In short, attack your fat for 20-30 minutes and then stop. For more clarity these are the definitions of Carbs, Proteins & Fats, which I use in my Presentations: - Carbohydrates are stored in our muscles and liver cells in the form of Glycogen, which are in turn broken down to glucose - Fat is stored beneath the skin where it serves not only as a fuel store but also as insulation to prevent Heat loss. Fats contain two types of molecules, glycerol & fatty acids, which when broken down release energy - Protein is a fundamental building block for the growth & repair of tissues. It is not stored in the same way as Carbs and Fat are. It can provide energy only when there is insufficient supply from the other sources.

Spring into health with these tasty snack recipes (BPT) - Healthy food that also tastes good is always in vogue and now it's getting a spring makeover. The theme of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) National Nutrition Month (R) this March is "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right." As spring approaches and fitness routines move outdoors, AND reminds you that healthy snacks can fuel a workout, get you through the day and taste delicious. "It's easy to get stuck in a rut with snacks," notes Becci Twombley, director of sports nutrition at the University of Southern California and ambassador for the American Pistachio Growers. "Spring is a time for renewal - cleaning out closets, setting new goals and making a fresh commitment to health and nutrition. Just as it's important to switch up your exercise routine every few weeks, you want to experiment with different snack combinations and have fun with your food. You'll be more likely to stick with a healthy routine if you keep it interesting." Twombley's "snacks from scratch" involves some creativity. Try one of her snacking experiments below if you need a snack makeover this spring. 1. Pick one protein-based ingredient and think about different ways to eat it as a snack. Twombley often recommends pistachios as a performance snack for exercise because, calorie-for-calorie, pistachios pack more protein than most common snacks. Additionally, a serving size of pistachios is 49 nuts (more than any other tree nut), which provides 6 grams of filling protein and 3 grams of fiber for only 160 calories. Research at the University of Toronto and Pennsylvania State University suggests that eating about 1.5-2 ounces of pistachios (about 20 percent of calories) per day helps curb the rise in blood glucose after a meal and lowers blood pressure, blood triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol, all of which, in turn, lower the risk for metabolic syndrome and heart disease. Researchers at Loma Linda University found that high tree nut consumption was associated with a lower occurrence of obesity and metabolic syndrome, increasing a person's risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke. As a snack ingredient, pistachios can be baked into homemade energy bars, sprinkled on yogurt or combined with dried fruit in a make-your-own trail mix. 26

3. Get creative with the ultimate 2. Work backwards. Think about your snack duo: protein and fiber. Rather favorite snacks, and then experiment than buying a traditional trail mix, with different ways to add new proteins make your own mix of pistachios and to that snack. For instance, Twombley your favorite dried fruit. Mix pistachios loves the portability of sport bars, but with air popped popcorn for a satisnot the lengthy ingredient list that can fying and filling post-workout snack. accompany some store-bought brands. Spread the mixture in a square dish lined with baking paper (9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches), approximately 1/2 inch deep, and press well into dish. The bars can also be formed individually and then be put on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake the mix in a pre-heated oven at 350 F for about 10-15 minutes. Wine a little. You’ll feel better

by Ratan Sethi

Wine and I go back a long way. And while our relationship started during the time I lived in Chicago, I am by no means a connoisseur. I don’t twirl it around my tongue, figure out the flavors and try to guess the year (usually the previous year but I still don’t try to guess!). I merely drink it (sip it Ratan, sip it!), if it tastes good I enjoy the taste and let the alcohol do it’s job. If it tastes crappy, then I either spit it out discreetly, or gently leave the unfinished glass in a nondescript place. While I may not be a wine expert, I’ve had more than my share of it to tell a good wine from a bad one. There are many stories I could share with you, without feeling any sense of shame. Because even though I love wine and have had cases of it, I am not your average sophisticated wine-drinker. One time my friend and I were invited to a BYOB party, for which we picked up two bottles of pinot noir from the local liquor store. By the time we got there, our host was out of wine glasses. So my friend, who under such circumstances, is equally lacking in class, spent the evening drinking straight out of the bottle. I will spare you from other such stories because the intent of this piece is completely different. All I was trying to do is give you a background of who I am when it comes to drinking any kind of liquor. Including wine, which normal people tend to associ32

ate with class (which sounds like ‘crass’ after you’ve downed a few). So when I received an invitation to a day of wine tasting at the SDU Winery just outside of Bangalore, I felt a little unnerved. My first thought was ‘am I supposed to pretend that I know my wines?’. I could easily wing it, just like I’ve winged so many other things in my life (and very convincingly I may add). But then I decided to come clean and tell the person who sent out the

Food

invite the truth, pretty sure that my name would be crossed off the list. In the nicest way I was basically told that Deva wines were not just for the classes. The intent was that anyone could enjoy their Cabernet Sauvignon or the Syrah including ignorant drinkers like me. She used such lovely words to convey this message that I felt truly special. Chattering away with Ranjini and Nitin, who were also on the invitee list, the drive to TG Halli went by quickly. On the way we stopped to see the vineyard from afar. Since it isn’t grape season there wasn’t too much to see. So I took a picture of a cow instead. Mohit Nischol, Business Head SDU was a great host. Once we got to the winery we were offered a hot beverage with a snack served to the breakfast deprived (me), platefuls of which we kept going through, followed by a tour of the winery. We got to see the machinery, the tanks for fermenting and storing the wine, the assembly line to get the bottles ready for sale (suck out the oxygen, fill with wine, close the top, label and I’m possibly missing something but did you really want more?) etc. We were also privy to smelling the ‘reserve’ wine that’s in French oak barrels that maybe I’ll get to drink in the not too distant future. Christmas perhaps? Once the tour was over, we began tasting the two wines, first from the tanks and then from the bottles. The first thing you should do, said Mohit, is to look at the wine (I did), then smell it (oops too late), then let it linger on your tongue before finally swallowing it (linger?). I have to confess that I had chugged down the first glass but I did follow his instructions during the course of the next.

The wine tasting continued for a while with us sitting around the picnic-y table full of goodies like smoked salmon, chorizo, ham, all kinds of cheeses, and yummy bread rolls. You would think that with all that food we wouldn’t need lunch. Think again! As soon as we were done washing down the breads and meats and cheeses with several glasses of very nice, very smooth wine, we moved on to the main dining area for a multi course lunch. Jealous? Before I end this piece I would like to say with complete sincerity that both wines, the Cab Sauv (sounds cool, right?) as well as the Syrah, that I tried (over and over again) were smooth and easy on the palate. Anyone who really knows me, is well aware that I am painfully honest and will either shut my mouth (not easy) or tell the truth. After all you can’t bribe me to write nice things about something I didn’t like, without serious cash exchanging hands. However, don’t just take my word for it - try some out for yourself.

I think it’s always better to know the language so you can emote. However now a days I’m not sure. Q. Life’s biggest lesson so far? Value your family and friends and don’t trust people so quickly. Q. A non-Bollywood Indian Man and Indian Woman you would look up to? There are a lot of British Asians who have done so well for themselves.. started businesses and company’s in the UK. I think that’s so inspiring and amazing. I look up to people who work hard and are successful Q. Behind the wheels or chauffeur driven? In Mumbai a chauffeur driven car and in London I’m the driver Q. Young & Beautiful OR Bold & Beautiful. Bold and beautiful Q. What does this phrase mean to you– “You may be traveling global but you are always living local”? Home is where the heart is.

Q. Teach us another way to say ‘I love you’. Lets leave it to the old way of saying it, it puts and adds so much meaning to the three words.

Interview With the Director of

by Sidharth Sodhi

Akhilesh Jaiswal. Filmfare Award Winning co-writer of "Gangs of Wasseypur", and Director-Writer of "Mastram".

I reached his place dot at 3pm as planned. He told me he'd almost forgotten I was coming... The roof in one of his rooms was leaking, he smiled and said. Q. What were you doing before "Gangs of Wasseypur", happened ? I came to Mumbai in May 2006, to pursue a B.A(Mass Media) Course. After a year I left that. Worked with "Working Titles" Theatre Group. Directed Marathi Ad-Films and Corporate films.Did the rounds of Production Houses. Q. And then ? "GOW" was superbly received. It gave me recognition and helped me make "Mastram". I learnt a Lot about Film Making, seeing Anurag Kashyap. How a Script gets converted into a film. Q. "Mastram : The Legend of Porn Writing is Back". Did you have to watch a lot of porn to resarch ? (Laughs).."Arre Aisa Kuch Nahin Hai Yaar". We'd read Mastram as kids. The resarch was based on the life of Mastram. Q. Did you find Mastram ? Not a Trace! So we had to make it an Inspired Fiction. Q. 26 odd Posters were released to promote the film. That's Innovative. Credit goes to Sunil Bohra Ji. It was a Novel Idea. Q. Do you get more Female Attention now that you're a Feature Film Director ? I dunno (blushes..). Sometimes, I don’t give female attention any attention. But, it's a good thing if they do (smiles). Q. You seem like a Cool Customer. Are you cool on your Sets too ? Haannn. Things get done with a Cool Head. That works for me. Q ..Anything you avoid doing ? umm.. I avoid writing Horror films. Though I Love watching them. But in the future, who knows... Q. What can we expect from you next ? There's a "Heist Crime Thriller" I'm currently working at among other things. Let's see. Q. How long have you been living in Andheri (W) ? 5 Years. MHADA, 4 Bungalow, 7 Bungalow, Yari Road. Got to Shift every 11 months... 38

Q. Andheri(w) is bustling with activity. As a Writer-Direct or, do you feel like shifting to a quieter place ? To a Better House. Yes ! But i think I'll be staying in Andheri for the Rest of my Life (smiles). I Love Andheri. Q. Your Favourite Hangout spots in Andheri ? To chill, there's Bru - Costa - Leaping Windows. If it's a meeting, then WTF or a bar. Q. What are the Changes you've seen here last 5 years ? The Metro's come. Connecting Lokhandwala backroad to Versova's been on for a bit. That'll be good when it's done. Q. What does the phrase "You may be traveling Global, but you're always Living Local" mean to you ? It's a great line Yaar ! Whenever you travel to a place, you should live there like a Localite. Otherwise you just go to a new place, travel a bit and come back. Q. Any Writing Course you took ? No. Self Learning Mode On.

“..I learnt a lot about Filmmaking seeing Anurag Kashyap.”

starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites

The dystopian epic, based on Lois Lowry's novel, starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites hits the theaters on 15th August, 2014 The Weinstein Co. and Walden Media is back again with a sci-fi epic. Based on the dystopian Y A novel by Lois Lowry, the winner the 1994 Newbery Medal that sold over 10 million copies worldwide - The Giver stars Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites as members of society in which there is no conflict, racism or sickness. The heart-wrenching story of The Giver centres on around Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colourless world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with the Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realises that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for him and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. Bridges plays the pivotal role of The Giver, he is weary because he carries the burden of preserving all the memories of humanity while the story is told through the eyes of Jonas played by Thwaites, a young boy who is unique in the community of sameness; he is mature, perceptive and compassionate. Streep’s Chief Elder leads an isolated society where emotions, privacy, and basic colors have all been stripped away from its citizens. She sums up her philosophy as, “When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong.” Her portrayal of the Chief Elder looks like it combines the icy detachment of The Devil’s Wears Prada with the unbending determination of The Iron Lady. Among the members of the community, only the Giver is capable of real love, and after years of loneliness he experiences an intense emotional connection with Rosemary played by the Taylor Swift. The motion picture adaptation of The Giver represents the fulfillment of a twenty year-long dream for actor Jeff Bridges, who also serves as a producer on the production. “My daughters read the book, but before I had known that they had read it, I was looking for some material to direct my father, Lloyd Bridges,” he recalls. “I also wanted to make a movie that my kids could watch at the time. I was looking through a catalogue of children books and I came across this wonderful cover of a book, with this old, grizzled kind of guy on the cover and thought, ‘Oh yeah, my dad can play that guy!’” Co-producing partner Walden Media spent over a decade developing the project and Chief Operating Officer, Frank Smith, says, "The Giver is the crown jewel of children's literature, and we are proud to add this film to the list of other great book to film adaptations we have produced like Holes, Charlotte's Web, Bridge to Teribithea, Because of Winn Dixie, Ramona and The Chronicles of Narnia." The Giver, with a budget of about $25 million, is being produced by Nikki Silver of Tonik Productions along with Neil Koenigsberg and Bridges. Vadim Perelman wrote the adapted script; Michael Mitnick penned the latest draft.

This Independence Day be The Giver

#HelpUsGrow

by Anubhav Anand

In a rainy monsoon afternoon I swing by Lokhandwala park No.4 to click some pictures for our July issue. Closed to the public in the afternoon, my attention goes towards the covered corner of the park that seats around 30-40 kids. Curiosity pulls me towards them. What could 30-40 kids in the middle of a monsoon afternoon be doing in what seemed a somewhat organized classroom. I may have caught their unexpected attention as most of them stopped doing what they were doing and looked at me. Amongst them a lady Parul, gets up and walks towards me with a warm smile on her face. Apologetic about the disturbance in what they were doing, I ask her curiously about this unique setup that I have not seen in this area before. Parul along with Nirmala (founder of the Lokhandwala Center) give me a 101 on the Angel Xpress Foundation (AXF). The well behaved kids that I saw were underprivileged kids (children of sweepers, maids, drivers, local gardeners etc.) who chose to come here to read and learn what they were missing out in their schools. No Compulsion, No Fees…. Just their desire to learn more than what was being provided to them in their Municipal schools. “What really makes this work?”, I ask. Apart from the enthusiasm and desire of the kids it is the VOLUNTEER teaching force of men and women who choose to take some time out of their life and share it with these kids. I had promised myself that I would cover this fascinating and selfless Volunteer based set-up in our August issue. 40

So I go down with my Camera this time to capture these full of energy kids and their equally enthusiastic teaching Volunteers. Studying, listening, writing in such a meaningful way that one misses out to see in the regular classes in schools. The 40 odd students are divided in batches of 5-6 kids, each with their respective Volunteer Teacher. Selfless volunteers with the most satisfying look on their faces interact with each kid with equal attention. I decide to talk to the Volunteers this time around as they are the key to make this happen for these underprivileged kids.

I talked to 3 different volunteers of different age groups and different backgrounds. But there seemed to be one thing in common amongst them and it sounded like a melody when I asked – “What does it give you in return being a Volunteer here?” - SATISFACTION

41

VOLUNTEERS Name: Lina Nair Profession: Ex Lecturer from NM College. Volunteers: 3 days a week. 2-3:30pm “Positive response from the kids is unbelievable. Even if it’s pouring they somehow show up for these classes. I saw this opportunity and was more than happy to give my time. Being a Volunteer has to come from within. We have to give something back to the society. I went to a good school and house. Why shouldn’t these kids have the right to good education? They always try. When I speak to them in English they understand. I just want all of them to go to college and get equal opportunity. I consider this like a job so I also take it seriously. In return I get the best job satisfaction.”

Name: Chaya Patel Profession: House Wife (65 yrs) Volunteers: 5 days. 2-3:30pm “These kids are from municipal schools. They understand their own language. We have to speak in English which is a foreign language for them. What we need to know that its a gradual effort that we are working towards. If people spend just a little time Volunteering once or twice a day, they will start valuing their own time and people will also value their time. This is one small way to help society.”

Name: Vaishnavi Gupte. Profession: Student 10th grade. Volunteers: 5 days. 2pm- 3:30pm “I always had a passion for teaching. When I was really young I used to play teacher teacher with imaginary kids so when I got a chance I gladly jumped into it. I love the kids. Few kids are my age but they still call me didi… It’s a good experience. I teach them English and Maths. If anyone can take out time and Volunteer, they should come here because these kids need guidance. They don’t get this kind of resource without paying a single rupee. The pleasure that these underpriviledged kids get in return gives us joy. Everytime I come here my mood gets refreshed. They are all very friendly. Most of them are very regular. My mom and dad are very supportive of this and they encouraged me for this.” 42

They could turn out to be champs, if you champion their cause. Spreading literacy and instilling life-values into a generation is the only way to create a better world. Angel Xpress Foundation (AXF) is a Mumbai-based (registered, 12 A and 80G certified) non-profit organization working towards the betterment of underprivileged children living in slum areas. We stand apart from fellow NGOs; as we operate by way of community involvement. We believe that every child deserves an opportunity to find her/his true potential; which can be attained by mentoring from well-educated and fortunate adults from their own vicinity. Today, our volunteers teach almost 700 children out of our 5 centers operated out of public parks and promenades across Mumbai. Besides stay-at-home mothers and a number of active senior citizens, our regular volunteers include youth from schools and colleges, freelance professionals looking for a breath of fresh air and some full time working professionals who take time out from their busy lives every week to give back. A number of donors use their centers to reach out their generosity to deprived children with useful items or treats.

Tip #3: BeAware

- by Meera

www.shutterstock.com/ suravid

Dear Parents, BeAware We read about this in the papers or books, or we see it in the movies but we always think this can never happen to anyone I know. We prefer turning a blind eye rather than being aware and be aware of not just strangers our children may be intermingling with, but even of those within the family and friends circle. Yes, its hard to believe but someone known to you may be molesting or abusing your chiild. The other day I had gone to the park and i noticed this young fellow who seemed to be waiting for someone. Later I saw a young girl, the help, dragging a four year old and telling him, ‘run, run, you need to run some more, just one more round’. She finally stopped by the young fellow and some kind of conversation ensued between them while the child listened out. There seemed to be tension in the air. Then, in a split second the young fellow struck the girl and the child watched this in stunned silence.

The parents of the child had sent him to the park with their reliable help in total faith and with the best intentions but what actually happens in their absence is something they are not aware of. Time and again one has heard of so many such incidents wherein children are exposed to various interactions or dialogues which are not meant for their innocent minds and we are so unaware and oblivious to it. So all parents, do make surprise checks, land up home or at the play ground or park unexpectedly, be watchful and aware, listen to when your children are conveying a message to you, if they are repeatedly reluctant to go with a particular person, if they indulge in behavior that is too adult for their age, if they use language which is not used by you, as a parent you need to be constantly and consistently alert. Even the most trusted person may betray your trust. This does not mean look at everyone with suspicion and distrust but be aware and alert. As far as possible avoid your child being alone with any one single person for long spells. For working parents another option is a reliable Day Care Centre and more and more corporates are not including this

facility in their program. It helps provide a stress free environment for the parent as the Day Care is in the premises of their office and when run by professionals, the atmosphere provided for the child is a safe and secure one. As we all know, children are very vulnerable and it is our moral duty to ensure and prevent any kind of abuse a child might be exposed to as it leaves a long lasting effect on them and hence we need to BeAware.

Tips For First Time Dog Owners by Pooja Advani

Bringing a dog home is a life-changing experience. Dogs are very loving creatures and are wonderful to have around, but they are a big responsibility as well. First time dog owners tend to be a little hesitant and unsure of what to do and how to care for their dog properly. Before you get a dog, be sure that you will be able to stick to your commitment. Dogs require a lot of care and attention, so be sure that you will be able to devote this to them. If you are too busy and don’t have enough time to care for a dog, do not get one. Remember, a dog is not just a privilege, it is also a responsibility. Evaluate your lifestyle and get a dog that matches it. For example, if you are not very athletic, do not get a dog that requires a lot of exercise. If you live in a small flat, do not adopt a big dog. Take all aspects of your families life (and your own life as well) into consideration before you choose a dog. Avoid adopting a dog during the holiday season. People tend to do this often, as puppies are often bought as presents at the time of a celebration. However, puppies require a lot of attention when they first come home, which may not be possible due to the endless distractions you will be faced with during this time. Prepare your home for the puppy to make the transition as smooth as possible. Buy treats, toys, bedding and other such necessities so that everything is ready and waiting for your dog when he or she comes to the new home. Your dog will also require a collar, leash and other such accessories.

Make a schedule for your family and you to decide the distribution of responsibilities such as food, water, walking, exercise, clean up and grooming. You could write these down and post them where every member of the family can see it as use it as a reminder. Having a pet is like having a child that never grows up. You have to clean after it bath it brush it feed it love it and sometimes even nurse it. Before you bring your dog home, dog-proof your house. Move all breakables and chewables out of reach, keep wires and electrical fixtures covered and unreachable; remove poisonous items, which are in the dog’s vicinity. Train your dog from the very first day. This includes housetraining and other forms of training as well. If your dog is doing something wrong, stop it then and there to prevent it from developing and bad habits. Dogs are creatures of habit and discipline so be sure to set one right from the start. Keep your dog healthy with frequent visits to the vet, vaccinations, plenty of exercise and a good diet. Tick and flea infestations are common to be sure to try and avoid those by checking your dog’s fur regularly. After a while, you will start recognizing your dog’s pattern - when she eats, what time he relieves himself. Try not to alter this schedule and adjust your day to adapt to it. Grooming is important. Do not bathe your dog too often but be sure to brush its fur regularly. Clip its nails; keep its teeth and ears clean. Particular breeds are more susceptible to certain problems, be aware of your breeds health risks so you can recognize symptoms or even avoid these problems altogether. Most importantly, be a friend. Give your dog plenty of love and attention. Play with him, give him treats, and take him for walks. Keep your dog happy and you will see this happiness reflect in yourself. Also remember like humans pets also grow old so be prepared. So don’t be disappointed that they cant play with you like they used to or run as fast after a few years. Be considerate and caring towards their needs. A dog is a big responsibility, this is an undeniable fact. However, the return you get from what you invest in taking care of a dog is amazing. They are extremely loving creatures, and are a great pleasure to have around. www.shutterstock.com/ gurinaleksandr

POEM Contrinuted by Ishani Kachroo

50

I’m a sailing ship in the dark lonely sea, All quiet and frightening just like it’s before a storm. All things which are good, Soon turn out to be bad. My heart is cold but my soul is warm, Not strong enough to bare the storm. It’s too fragile to handle so much pain, What will happen if it starts to rain.. My tears will hide in the sorrow of the rain. And no one will know my heart is insane. Can you hear it sing the songs of depression.. I bet you can’t because you don’t have any relation. People get wet in the rain, But I am the one who feels its pain. Close your eyes and listen to your heart. Feel the calmness. You’ll know how to live a good life with no tears to shed. Listen to all the good, ignore the bad. Or else in your life you will always be sad.

Spiritual

STRUGGLE

by Saloni Bhardwaj

Commodities and accessories give us ‘external’ confidence and enslave us; enchain us to the suffering which we assume is the way of living. The new concept of life has dissolved the thin line between selfishness and self interest and we have established these rules as the only way to live our life. Anything, besides the quest for acquiring the above, is looked down on.

www.shutterstock.com/ Chones

The only employment God gives us is to live a life and find our purpose for being born, what ever rest we do is to satisfy our ego. We quench our thirst of living by indulging in luxuries, run behind power and fame till they come to us easy either through short-cuts or loopholes or without any struggle! Struggle- the great effort, which many avoid, the thrust of life which few wish to experience is given to all but only the fortunate few view it as a stepping stone to growth and real success. It’s the darkest before dawn; a caterpillar in a dark cocoon, looks the ugliest before it sets her beautiful wings and takes on her flight to become a butterfly. The mother undergoes unbearable pain before she delivers her child. We function at the physical level and what seems struggle to our senses is actually the path to freedom and liberation. The real fight is what most of us do not even realize and due to the ignorance keep living on the surface. We are so complacent in mediocrity, in an average atmosphere and a run of the mill thought process that we surrender our existence to our sensual pleasure or bodily luxuries. Most of us never even embark the journey of life in true sense and many of us have yet not lived. With the fear of losing on the comforts of home, money, job we avoid the hard work that teach us to take on our life ourselves; to look for our dream, our purpose of living and find the truth. We admit defeat in the hands of our own extravagance and continue to lead an ordinary life. Very few people accept struggle and even fewer are lucky enough to have been chosen by God to realize that they are struggling and decide to come out of it and see light. The loftiness of our unawareness not only keeps us in the viscous circle of suffering but most of the elders, parents deprive the youngsters of the family to struggle. They are slaves to their lifestyle and want the same for the generations to come. They impose their ignorance in the name of values and suffocate the soul of the members of family. We are so consumed in our ignorance that there is a decline in the natural struggle process. But since He wants our happiness, He throws a blitz of calamity, like loss of job, death in the family, which may seem brutal then usually take us on the path to realization. He who risked nothing gained nothing- Such is the latent pleasure of struggle. Like crabs, the minute we find resistance we retreat but true worth comes when you let yourself free of illusions and become open to life. The destination for everyone is same but it’s the different route which we take sets each one apart.

HOROSCOPE (AUGUST) The year ahead for Leos (July 22- August 22)… Many things in your life have reached completion, whether in the exact way you have wanted, or not. This year encourages you to be absolutely clear about what you want and why you want it, so that when you get it, it is easier for you to acknowledge it. How you would get stuff is already taken care of, so just trust. Do look after your health. Try to rationalise any overwhelm that you may feel. All is well. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.) ARIES(March 21st-April 20th): You are likely to feel rather carried by circumstances. The good part is that there will be so much that engages your energy that you feel satisfied. The lesser part is that you may not notice the blessing of being busy. Things lighten up by the end of the month. Having your nose to the grind-stone now, is good for your future. Take very good care of your health. TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): This is a month you would appreciate greatly towards the end, so start noticing right away how circumstances can possibly enhance you. You are likely to be well-engaged, doing what you like, and liking what you do, with very few diversions in between. Dedication is in your nature, so the energies of this month are a cake-walk. Health would also be good.you don’t, then just stick to your own regular beaten track, and do everything within the box for your own comfort. GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): Whatever else you do or do not, make sure you do the one thing that will pull you through this month. Roll with the experts. And there are numerous other experts, besides yourself. Put aside your own tendencies and follow an earlier Yellow Brick Road. Hang in there and by the end of the month, you will have cause to rejoice. Do take special care of your health, and have pockets of free time that air your spirits. CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): A fairly good month ahead of you, if you are willing to allow for taking a follower’s path. Let others lead you through example. Be inspired by the wisdom of those who have been there and done that. You may choose your leader, and in doing so, you will eventually establish your importance. This is a month where you will accomplish far more by treading the trodden path, than by seeking out your own. Health and wealth would be your resources, so treat them well. LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): Some of you innately know the value of planning, hard work and dedication. However, planning will not be at its best now, and dedication will be challenging. That leaves hard work. Though this month is not very compliant with your nature, things change and everybody gets their day in the sun, and you will be able to play along fairly well. Towards the end of the month, you would feel more able to establish your authority. Look after your health and wealth will take care of its status quo. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): August is your month. Everything will pan out just the way you think they should. Even the unpredictable will tail into your scheme of things. You will be able to quell emotional surges with your current rising ability to extract energy from dedicated detailing. In fact, because you are reading this, you are now in a better position to utilise those surges and inform yourself of little things you might have missed earlier… such as, including your own likes and dislikes as part of the data. Health will be good, if you stop resisting.

LIBRA (September 23rd-October 22nd): If you are getting ready to have a good month, or a bad one, it’s a mixed bag. Don’t let that frustrate you as the mix is very clear. Let the plodders handle the big things. You get the small things. The first and third weeks will be uncomfortable for you. You have a chance to enjoy yourself in the second and fourth week. By the time the month ends, you will be able to forget the travails of the beginning. An alert: if you stumble upon something that you don’t know, let it be. It will point you in the right direction. Health will be, yes, a mixed bag. SCORPIO (October 23rd-November 22nd): If you can trust those who have gone before you, then it would be wise to shape your actions around the DNA of that wisdom. You will find guidance worth your mettle, and you can allow yourself to accept them. After the first week, you will realise that teachers can put you in sync with yourself, as well. Breathe deeply if you are unsure or nervous, but try to accept from others what you need. Though uncomfortable, if you are calm enough, you will realise you are well looked after. Your health will be fairly good. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st): This is a month when you must, just, believe. Things are not going to be your style, but they can be as you want. Since very little fazes you, all that you need to be aware of are steadiness, understanding emotions, and analysis. You will be able to see their validity. Around the middle of the month, you might find your natural exuberance leaping up,. By the end every thing will make perfect sense. Health would be fairly good. CAPRICORN (December 22nd–January 19th): You have it better than most! You are also in a mood to appreciate this. Hard work and dedication are your second name. Only, there is not much chance of starting anything new this month. This means you can hone up skills and brush up on things in which you already are an expert, which is very favourable for the long run. You will get an all-rounded view of emotional, creative and thought-provoking perspectives, through calm observation. Health will be as good as you make it. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): Be prepared, you are going to see life as others see it, and it can be a very enlarging experience for you, if you allow it to be. You will be in situations where your best ability may not be required at all, and that actually teaches you a new way to be. Open your mind as this month provides you with opportunities to learn perspectives that you would never have applied by yourself. Your health will be sluggish. By the end, you will feel more yourself, again. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): An enlightening month! It is for you to see the wisdom of guides and teachers in application. You understand the eternal, and now you can turn observer. There is protection for you as you go along with other people. By mid-month, you will have understood exactly what this month holds for you. Meditation will calm you. Take care of your health towards the end of the month, mainly from disagreeable thoughts and ideas, as they tend to affect you physically. Keep your focus on your anchoring belief.
