You go to a party and someone asks Editor-in-chief you a simple question – “Where are you Anubhav Anand from?” or “Where do you live?”. A simple Twitter- @anubhavanand question with a simple answer (Andheri or juhu or Bandra etc.). But surprisingly we still have not been able to claim that identity on the online world. An online identity based on the most important place – your Hood (where you live and where you belong).

Reasons to adopt Monochromatic Style! by Priya Shah
I
t’s a new year. Time to throw the guards away and try something you’ve never tried before. It’s time to adopt Monochromatic style. Often, I ask my clients to implement the same and they go like “mono-what-chrome” What does that mean? Mono means one/single and chrome means color/hue. Picking one color out of the 12 colors in the color wheel and repeating it in various tints, shades and tones is monochromatic style. Let us pick up the color red. Now to wear red in monochromatic style, we can use: cherry, rose, crimson, scarlet, blush, mahogany, ruby, apple, wine, blood, brick, candy and garnet to name a few. Whichever color you use, make sure, the balance of tints, tones and shades is done well. The key is to create a visually appealing look where each color cohesively works together and not against each other. You would be surprised to see how many variations, both bright and neutral can be created from just one color. Monochrome also refers to a basic;

yet bold black and white style.
incorporate this style in your wardrobe:-
A common misconception to this style is wearing a blue trouser with the same blue blouse along with same color bag and shoes too. Of course, this makes one look like a crayon! So, there are few things you need to take in account while using this style - fabric, texture, print,
1. It is an eternal style: Most people are fans of wearing different colors not knowing that a monochrome outfit turns out to be classier than any other combinations. Very few people experiment with this style, reason being failure to carry it off. But once you master this art, it can be your signature style especially on your nonfashionable/dull days. This is an eternal style which came into fashion in 1960’s and keeps coming back every now and then. It’s considered to convey the most polished look and is considered very sophisticated as it usually creates a calming effect.
balance and adding an unexpected touch. Using these elements will give liveliness to the outfit. So, here are few reasons why you need to

2. Less is more: “Black comprises everything. So does white. They possess absolute beauty: they are in perfect harmony.” —Coco Chanel. If you are not confident about which color to pick & experiment; Monochrome consists of all black and white outfits as well. This is good to begin with. As they say, “Less is more,” that’s power of black and white.

3. Works for any Occasion: In the 17th century, monochromatic style was associated solely with formal wear but in today’s time, all the rules have been altered. Now a day, this style can be worn to any occasion – street style, clubbing, weddings, brunch date, family lunch and of course, even at work. It works equally well everywhere. Just the balance of tints, tones, and shades has to be right. 4. Flatters every body type: Along with creating visual interest in any outfit, monochromatic style also creates illusion of length, which makes one look sleek and tall. It flatters all body types. If you feel you are too short and you always wished to be taller or slimmer, then this is it folks! 5. Highlights effortlessly: Imagine wearing all black and wearing yellow strappy sandals (shown in the picture.) Can you imagine the sandals being highlighted with so much ease? Similarly if you want to highlight your bag, neckpiece, waistline, shoes – this is the best style to carry. 6. Anyone can carry it off: Going back to history, fashion designers were inspired by black and white narrow suit of men for this style but in today’s day, men and women both are able to pull it off with ease. The vast contrast between black and white speaks more of power and authority rather than masculinity or feminism. This chic, elegant style suits everyone!

Your finances before and after the “I do...”
A
re you gearing up for a loved ones wedding? Are you confused with what you should do if your son or daughter is getting married or if it’s your friend’s wedding? Simply planning for the wedding as a grand event to attend is not enough. How financially ready you are for this is also an important question to ask yourself.
to start planning for this goal well in advance. The starting point should be to know the cost as of today, for the kind of wedding you would want to plan for. You will then need to cover for inflation, so that costs of today are appropriately estimated to the number of years to goal. Make sure you also account for the cost of ornaments and make one common wedding goal to cover all costs.
Friend’s Wedding:
Next, make a choice of investment instruments to accumulate the desired sum of money. Equity is a good choice from along term perspective. Since one must not keep all eggs in one basket it’s better to chart out an asset allocation and stick to it without getting carried away by a host of new and apparently high return investment choices that you may learn about from various sources like the media, a friend or an agent.
If your friend is about to get married, you may want to plan a vacation as a high value gift with him/her. You need to plan for this in advance because last minute planning may turn out to be an expensive affair. Even if you have only 6-12 months in hand you can plan for it. For an individual who is salaried, setting aside a fixed sum of money, through a bank recurring deposits or an ultra short or liquid fund would be ideal.
For a parent whose child’s wedding needs to be planned: Whilst in many parts of India, planning for this goal starts well in advance, there is a need for structured planning around it. With the trend of destination weddings setting in, it’s important
14
It’s important to review your investment choices at least annually. You must also rebalance your portfolio when required. If you are starting early, you should allocate a higher percentage to equity and lower portion to debt to start with and then keep reducing the equity portion. When you are 3 years away from your goal, shift into debt completely. Balanced funds are also an

option, as they offer a mix of debt and equity with a higher allocation to equity, and are very tax efficient. Allocate a portion of the portfolio to gold to hedge for ornament costs, and also for diversification purposes. An important aspect to consider is the flexibility to make changes along the way, as planning for long term goals could require mid course corrections. In addition, there could be the challenge of other goals taking priority over a period of time like education, or your own retirement. Avoid taking any debt to fund a marriage goal.

Getting Started on Getting Pregnant

by Dr. Lily Keswani, MD, DGO, Integrative Medicine
IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING HAVING A BABY, YOU PROBABLY HAVE WONDERED WHAT YOU CAN DO TO ENSURE A HEALTHY PREGNANCY. FIND THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS HERE.
Pregnancy Diet and Nutrients A healthy pregnancy diet will promote your baby’s growth and development. The basic principles of healthy eating remain the same — get plenty of vegetables, protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. However, a few nutrients in a pregnancy diet deserve special attention. Here’s what tops the list. Folate and folic acid - prevent birth defects Folate is a B vitamin that helps prevent neural tube defects, serious abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord. How much: 800 micrograms of folic acid a day before conception and throughout pregnancy. Good sources:
18
Leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, and dried beans and peas. Omega 3 essential fatty acids for baby’s brain I can’t stress enough on how crucial this ingredient is for both, a healthy pregnancy, and your baby’s brain development. Omega-3 fatty acids are brain food and are vital for both brain and early visual development of the baby. They reduce the risk of allergies in infants, help prevent pre-term delivery, lower the risk of high BP and may optimise birth weight. Omega-3 decreases the mother’s risk for postnatal depression and helps in the treatment of infertility.

Good sources: Fatty fish such as salmon. How much: 300 mg DHA daily. This should be continued before and throughout pregnancy as well as during feeding. Protein — Promotes growth Protein is crucial for your baby’s growth, especially during the second and third trimesters. How much you need: 1-1.5grams/kg body weight, per day. Good sources: Meat, poultry, fish and eggs. Vegetarian options include dried beans and peas, tofu, dairy products, and peanut butter.

Calcium - strengthens bones You and your baby need calcium for strong bones and teeth. Calcium also helps your circulatory, muscular and nervous systems run normally. How much: 1,000 – 1500mg/day. Good sources: Dairy products are the best absorbed sources of calcium. Non-dairy sources include small fish and spinach. Vitamin D — Promotes bone strength
Endocrine disrupting chemicals are chemicals found in plastics, pesticides, personal care products and food additives. They can cause difficulty in conceiving, increased risk of breast cancer and developmental delays in children; as well as heart disease and thyroid dysfunction. Avoid using plastic. Even if you eat a healthy diet, you can miss out on key nutrients. Taking a daily multivitamin — ideally starting three months before conception — can help fill any gaps. Be informed and Stay Healthy!
Vitamin D also helps build your baby’s bones and teeth, brain development and general growth. www.shutterstock.com/Dmitri Ogleznev
I usually recommend 60,000IU once a week. Iron — Prevents anaemia If you don’t get enough iron, the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight might be higher. How much you need: 30mg/ day. Good sources: Red meat, poultry and fish, also beans and vegetables. Thyroid disorders

Hypothyroidism in the mother can cause lower IQ, developmental delays and impaired mental development in the child. It is also linked to infertility or repeated pregnancy loss. Check levels frequently and increase dosage of medication. Testing for blood groups in both parents (Rh incompatibility) and for inherited diseases (if there is any in the family) is also a must.

F
ew people are lucky enough to be born with perfect teeth, but orthodontic treatment can make a huge difference to you or your child. Different types of Dental Braces – You Have Choices Now Dental technology has brought us to an exciting time concerning dental braces. Metal Braces Metal braces are the most commonly used braces and any orthodontist can provide this system of braces. The system involves brackets that are glued to each tooth. Ceramic Braces Ceramic Braces are not as visible as metal braces. Ceramic braces are a little more expensive, but they look great. Lingual Braces Lingual Braces are attached behind the teeth so they are not visible when you smile. Lingual braces are also more expensive than traditional metal braces but the advantages are apparent. Invisalign Braces Invisalign Braces are one of the newest brace types on the market. These are not braces like those that you are used to. Invisalign Braces are not permanent rather they are plastic clear retainers that are worn. How it works is the Orthodontist takes measurements of

your teeth, and then sends them out to have plastic trays made. You wear these plastic retainers for a while. On your next appointment, the Orthodontist repeats the process. This continues over time and slowly with each new Invisalign retainer, your teeth move into position. Self-Ligating Braces Self-Ligating Braces get rid of annoying rubber bands. These high-tech braces deliver quick results without having to visit the orthodontist every other week. Clear Braces They blend with the natural color of the teeth by being transparent enough so they do not show. Your Opinion Matters Dr Ritika Says: Do not be afraid to voice your opinion regarding the types of braces you are interested in. If you do not feel comfortable with braces that show, ask about other options like Lingual Braces or Invisalign, which are hidden braces. Alternatively, if you want those cool colors go ahead and ask. After all, you are at Aesthetic Smiles and we are there to make you happy. Brace yourself for a fashion statement Tooth braces, a source of embarrassment for generations of schoolchildren, have become a modern-day fashion statement, according to Dr Ritika. Instead of suppressing smiles, teenagers

once stigmatized by having a mouthful of brightly colored metal have become the envy of their peers. The traditional method of realigning teeth is believed to have become de rigueur after being openly paraded by a number of celebrities. “The boys want braces in their football team colors and the girls want something to match whatever outfit they are wearing that weekend. Teenagers now believe it is cool and trendy to wear a brace.” Braces for all Ages Many people think braces and other orthodontic appliances are meant only for children and teenagers. The truth is more adults than ever are choosing to improve their smile through realignment. And although orthodontics is similar for adults as for children, they’ve gotten better for everyone. There are numerous options for braces that are less noticeable and easier to maintain “Everybody these days seems to want perfect teeth and this helps achieve that.” At Aesthetic Smiles, Dr Ritika Arora & her Team of Specialized Doctors offer all ranges of Dental and SKIN CARE TREATMENTS. r Neeraj Shah is an executive in an MNC and makes a comfortable living. Life is hectic and tough, the job demands working late nights and he has very little time for himself and his family. At 45 he has been diagnosed with diabetes, he weighs 110 kgs & he suffers from snoring disorder. Mr Shah is not just one such person, we see a lot of us with a similar story. Most of us entangled with the daily routine, forget to take care of ourselves. It is important to realize that a healthy body is the foundation of a healthy mind and a successful life. Obesity is not an isolated condition but it comes with a package of problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea (snoring), polycystic ovarian disease, infertility, depression. Obesity is not a disease of the affluent; it is the outcome of reducing physical activity and availability of high calorie cheap ready to eat food in abundance. So a child playing virtual games on a computer and munching chips is a sure recipe for health disaster! Incidence of childhood obesity is also on the rise in India. India has earned the dubious distinction of “World Capital of Diabetes”. This is not a matter of pride but of grave concern because Diabetes is a chronic disease and its treatment has to be continued till death. Obesity is commonly measured as ‘Body Mass Index’ or BMI. A BMI of 37.5 and above is classified as ‘Morbid Obesity’
22
while a BMI of 32.5 along with diseases like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, PCOS is also classified as morbid obesity. The simplest way to weight loss is diet and exercise. But when you are morbidly obese & are unable to lose weight in spite of all efforts, you should consider Bariatric surgery. Neha, a 26 year old executive officer hated the way she looked because she was a 96 kgs in spite of all efforts to shed kilos. She was fed up of her polycystic ovarian syndrome and her knee pain due to which she could barely stay a day without pain killers. Finally she was referred to me by her friend. Crafting a Culinary CommunityChef Gresham Fernandes, Executive Chef – Impressario Group by Zeba Akhtar

he foodie in me heaved in uncontrolled excitement at the thought of getting to meet the prodigy behind the menus of most of my favorite restaurants. I ambled into Saltwater Café on a January afternoon, waiting to meet Chef Gresham Fernandes, assumably wearing his chef attire, all serious and business like.
Instead, I was surprised to see him walk in with a massive cup of tea in his hands, dressed down in casuals, eyeing the place for perfection, before we began our formal introductions. The interview was strewn with many amusing anecdotes, of which one stayed with me throughout the day. When interviewing a chef, one of my recurring question happens to be around their signature ingredient in the kitchen. When I posed the same question to Chef Gresham, I was rather surprised.
I had never looked at food this way, and his response was true as much as it was appalling. A typical Bandra boy, Gresham claims to know Bandra at the back of his hand. With an inclination towards music since
an early age, he knew he would never venture into hard-core academics. It was only after helping a friend out with his Chinese cart that he realized his fascination for food, which evidently landed him into a Leela kitchen, and since then, there has been no looking
He replied saying, “If someone tells you that you need any other fancy ingredient, they clearly don’t know their business too well. The signature ingredient in every kitchen are salt and water. Without salt, your meat won’t brine and your veggies won’t cook, and with the wrong water, your sauces will end up in a disaster, and your stock will taste all weird.”

back. “Youngsters today do not want to sweat it out. They want everything too easily. Sixteen years ago when I first entered the kitchen at The Leela as a pastry chef, we had to work close to eighteen hours a day, with almost little or no sleep. That is what teaches you how to be a chef. No fancy degree or culinary school can ever give you the experience that a formal kitchen does, and there is no better learning. It teaches you the importance of commitment and without commitment; you cannot excel as a chef. You need to be dedicated to what you do more than anything else.” says Gresham as he recalls his early days at The Leela Kempinski.
replies, and even when we asked him to suggest a few dishes from the Salt Water Café menu, he smiled saying, “You cannot judge a restaurant by just one dish. A chef puts in a lot of effort in crafting an entire menu and no singular dish can define the essence of a restaurant. All I can say is that the food is fun, it is exciting and definitely worth a try!” It is very rarely that we witness such experience and such drive for innovation in the same person. At a time where many would have been complacent with the designation, Gresham still strives to make food fun and exciting each day!
Within a couple of years, Gresham opened his own restaurant, Saltwater Grill at Chowpatty. Shortly after, he got associated with the Impressario Group and has endeavored to jointly design the menus for Smoke House Deli, Salt Water Café, Social, as well as many firsts under the Impressario group. As an executive chef, he oversees the gastronomic wellbeing of all these restaurants and keeps brewing new flavors each time. Not only is he a pioneer of ‘molecular gastronomy’ in India, Chef Gresham also likes to pursue other arts, and is a guest DJ at places such as Social and Bonobo in Mumbai. His style of music is a mix of minimal and techno. As a chef, he is more often than not requested by people to cook for them. His style of cooking for people involves get togethers and communal eating where he likes to cook up a wholesome meal rather than singular dishes. For him, “anything that is rustic and is made with dedication, always works.” It is with this fervor in mind that he is also associated with the Saint Jude project, a melting pot for artists, musicians and the likes where they come together for meals cooked by Gresham and others with locally and organically sourced produce. It functions as a collaborative space for people and the food is wholesome and very progressive. Before this, he was also associated with ‘The Gypsy Kitchen’ an endeavor to promote home cooking, mostly for the elderly people with whom generally lies the traditional gourmet secrets. It also helped the home chefs to spread the word about their cooking and benefited them with returns. LL | community Entrepreneur Of The Hood Rahul Bajaj
A
rt and business may not generally be a preferred combination, but here is someone who is changing that norm. Meet Rahul Bajaj, our entrepreneur of the hood, and the director and brains behind Le Sutra Hotel, the country’s first Indian Art based hotel, which promises a one of a kind experience. What’s more, is that he plans to expand the essence of Indian art with upcoming pop ups such as the recent Art By The Sea at the Carter Road promenade. We caught up with him to know more about his noteworthy idea, and here’s what he shared with us!
Q. When and how did the concept of Le Sutra come about?
A 16-room hotel called Hotel Pali Hills was in need of renovation for the rooms section. Its three Restaurants had already made a huge impact on the clientele, namely Olive Bar & Kitchen, Out of the Blue and Deliciae, the Dessert Café. The challenge was how do we put a 16room hotel on the world map? Initially, we started with the idea of making an Art Hotel and after our first room was ready, we realized it was wonderful, but it lacked the soul, because it looked like an Art Hotel that could be anywhere in the world. Therefore, we went back to the drawing board and worked with multiple designers to recreate Le Sutra into an Indian Art Hotel the first of its kind.
Q.
Was art something that you had always been pursuing? I have been a student of art in my school and I acquired significance in my class.
28
Putting Indian Art On The Hospitality Map Rahul Bajaj
For 3 y e a r s , I was by Zeba Akhtar considered the worst art student in my school. I just hated drawing tomatoes and bottle gourd and I preferred birds on a tree than those painted on paper. With the influence of my Art Teacher, Mr. Nilesh Q. What are the various themes that Vede, I managed to scrape through in make up Le Sutra? my Art Exam.
Q. Why Indian art? We felt that for an Art Hotel to be relevant it needed to capture the ethos of Indian-ness as its soul factor. And so, that became the background thought for the creation of Le Sutra. We realized that Indian Art was probably older than other art forms by several thousand years, giving us a great advantage.
Q.
How did you go about putting plans together for the Le Sutra? We created a project team, which consisted of Art Coordinators, Researchers, and interviewed 120 Artists and 40 Sculptors and discussed with them our concepts. On a drive from Mumbai to Lonavala, I probably got lost into a trance and took the concept that we had already finalized and broke it into segments of characters and characteristics.
February 2016 | Volume1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)
The concept finalized was based on the three Gunas: the Tamas, Rajas, and Satva. One for each of the floors. The three Gunas stand for the three aspects of human nature. Each of these Gunas had to be translated into characters and characteristics. So, as the concept got fine-tuned, Tamas had rooms on Vaasna or desire, a Room on Ravana, a room on Maya which stood for delusion of the mind, and Angdai, the Spa which more than justified inertia one of the attributes of Tamas. The Rajsic floor had a room on valour, dedicated to the character of Karna. It had rooms on Ashoka who was a change of artist from Rajsic to Satvic. The room on Krishna stands for

romance. Another on Shakuntala and Dushyant that stood for love. The other rooms displayed the characteristics of Rajsic Guna like Dhuutya or Gambling, Yagna or Worship, Shringar or Adornment and Music, etc. The Satvic floor signified characteristics like Nirvan – a room dedicated to the life of Buddha. Prakriti or Energy, Shuddhi or Cleansing and Mandala or Spiritual Geometry.
Andhra Art, and Mughal Folk Art. These apartments are fully furnished and completely outfitted to move into for long-term rentals ranging from six months to three years
Q. What has been the strongest bit of your entrepreneurial journey? Creating Le Sutra to be a cult product took a lot of planning and expenditure.
Q. Why Art By The Sea? An Art Hotel must spread its scent and justify its relevance by giving to society its essence.
Q. How successful would you call this initiative?
This was the second Art by the Sea and this time, it was a joint initiative with Marico Evenings and supported by Bandra West Residents Association. We must have had several thousand visitors on these three evenings who watched the art come alive from a blank canvas to a complete masterpiece. Many of the visitors spent time interacting with the Artists and asking them various questions. Artists engaged also in pottery, sculpture, etc. The swarm of human beings that sustained itself around this Art Camp certified its success. What was touching was that people of the weaker section of society also enjoyed observing the artists at play. We have also done events like – Yoga by the Sea, which was an introduction to the Yoga Sutra by Patanjali.
Q.
What were the risks involved in setting up something as new and as niche as Le Sutra? The costs involved of creation of this art and the time it took to implement, it was an economic risk but it all worked out as expensive but expressive!
Q.
What plans for the future of Le Sutra? We have already completed another project after Le Sutra – The Hotel and this is called Le Sutra Art Homes. We have over a dozen apartments, which have been created, as Art Homes for rental accommodation, another first in this country. We have two collections, the first in a genre of Tribal Art Homes based on several folk art forms like Madhubani, Bhil, Gond, Kalighat, February 2016 | Volume 1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition) 29

Empowering Marginalized Communities Shishir Mohod, SVEEP Officer
by Zeba Akhtar
T
he stigma of marginalization in a country like India always rakes strong. Be it the stigma of gender, caste, tribe, sexual orientation, or even occupation. More often than not, these labels are so strong that they turn into a vital part of a communities sense of self and belonging, which usually ends in rendering them incapacitate, and withdrawn from mainstream societies. This is pretty much the case when it comes to communities such as trans genders as well as sex workers. Because they are not accepted by mainstream society and are usually looked down upon, they are thus relegated to the peripheries of social living. This further drives them into an attitude of mistrust especially when it comes to anything remotely related to the state or the government.
The above paragraphs are not just my analysis, but are the beliefs of Shishir Mohod, a SVEEP officer under the Election Commission Of India, an official who has encountered these trends first hand, and was successful

enough in bringing about a significant change. Our man in question is an inspiring official who broke the usual shackles of stigma amongst marginalized communities and was hence honored with the President’s Award for the same. “The Election Commission Of India realizes that there are certain communities which are relegated to the boundaries, mostly because of the general attitudes of the people. It is trying to include all types of voters in to the voting system, because after all, democracy is not just meant for a handful. As a Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation officer, my task was to assimilate these communities to come forward.” Says Shishir. When the Election Commission Of India decided to assign tasks to different states,

the state of Maharashtra was assigned the task of uplifting the trans genders as well as the sex workers. When they first set out on the task, the number of trans genders who were enrolled in the voting rolls was zero. This was due to the fact that many of them had migrated, and lacked in the documents, which were necessary for ensuring voting presences. However, in just a matter of three years, Shishir made the impossible happen. In 2015, as opposed to the start in 2012, the number of trans genders enrolled as voters had come up to a whopping 1200 and it keeps getting higher. “We directed special campaigns towards these communities. It was common knowledge that until and unless we interacted with them up close and personal, it would be impossible for us to make any real change. However, I knew that this was not the task of just one organization. Hence we got in touch with different non-governmental organizations which had been working with these communities to get a further insight into their issues.” Explained Shishir. A resident of Amravati, who has been settled for long in Bandra, and has been associated with the Indian government

for the past twenty-five years, Shishir strongly believes that the only way forward is to bring these communities together. He is of the belief that we need to remove the fear of the government from the minds of these people. The reason why they fear the government is because they were far removed from the society. Nobody gave them proper residence and they were discriminated even when it comes to employment.

Opening up was not an easy task, but they remained persistent and gradually got the confidence of these communities. Despite creating a landmark change, Shishir still does not feel complacent. “Our endeavor is not limited to just the two communities assigned to us. Pierrot’s Troupe presents Lal Qile Ka Aakhri Mushaera Date: 7Th February Location: Rang Sharda Mumbai NEAR LILAVATI HOSPITAL, KC MARG, BANDRA RECLAMATION FLYOVER, ONGC COLONY, BANDRA WEST ONGC COLONY, BANDRA WEST MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA 400050 ‘Lal Qile Ka Aakhri Mushaera’ is the re-creation of what was supposedly the last ‘poetic congregation’ during the reign of the Mughal Emperor and eminent poet, Bahadur Shah ‘Zafar’, played by none other than Tom Alter, a master of Urdu, acting and history telling. The importance of this historic event lies in the fact that it literally assembled on one stage the tallest figures of Urdu poetry. The play, therefore, beautifully relives the ‘Golden Period’ of Urdu Poetry by assembling on one stage Ustaad Zauq, Mirza Ghalib, Momin, Zafar, Dagh, Azurdah, Aish, Sheftah, Balmukund Huzoor, Tishnah, Daagh, Ustaad Shauq, Sakhanand Raqam and many more. In the process, this highly rich costume and period drama brings forth the poetry of the finest quality and class: For instance, Ghalib’s, ‘Ibn-e Maryam hua kare koi’, Zauq’s, ‘Laayi hayaat aaye, qaza le chali chale’, Momin’s, ‘Asar us ko zara nahin hota’, Zafar’s, ‘Ya mujhe afsar-e shahana banaya hota’. No less does the play take the audiences back to the past to come face to face with the legends - their elegant recitation styles and mannerisms, their interperson relationships, their exclusive get ups and, most important of all, their excellent sense of humor as reflected in repartees they frequently exchange with one another during the course of the Mushaera. In the broader sense, the play showcases the life and living in ‘Delhi’, before it began to undergo a change - politically, socially and culturally - in the wake of the First War for Independence.

Challenging Stereotypes and Breaking Boundaries Sapna Bhavnani by Zeba Akhtar

eing a woman in any part of the world is a task. Being a woman in India is a difficult task. And being a woman, who is a challenge to the normative stereotypes in India, is an ordeal. When Sapna Bhavnani first moved back to India after a fourteen-year long stint in the U.S, she found herself in the middle of a culture shock. And the snide remarks and comments from those around her doubled up the agony.
However, with a firm resolve, she remained unmoved, and here she stands today, as one of the most celebrated hair stylists in the country with an effervescent style of her own, which has today elevated her to the position of a role model for many other women in the country. My rendezvous with her was not just based on her hair styling or her salon, Mad-o-wot in Bandra, but instead our conversation traversed more along the

the stigma of disfigurement and lack of confidence that these women face on an everyday basis. She believes that any form of stigma can be dealt with, if there is enough belief and dedication, and it is with this idea in mind that she has been training sex workers associated with the non-profit Apne Aap Women’s Collective. The goal is to train these women in professional hair styling so that they may be able to propel further. ‘I am a firm believer in baby steps. I know that they will not transform into master stylists overnight. But the very fact that they will acquire the skill is a start. And any start is magic.’ Sapna is already on the path to setting up a training center above her salon, where these women can acquire the necessary skill. Her hope for these women is for them to be able to live a life with dignity and freedom without having to hide their past, and for this, she believes that effort and direction are extremely vital. “People need to be aware of multiple realities of woman hood. When I was invited to Start Up India conference in Delhi, I was excited not just about meeting the Prime Minister, but to be able to represent woman hood in all its variety. It was my effort at making him aware that there are women like me who also represent India, and are equally successful. It was a proud moment for me not only as a person, but as a

I go back to my introductory statement. Being a woman in any part of the world is a task. Being a woman in India is a difficult task. And being a woman, who is a challenge to the normative stereotypes in India is an ordeal. However, not IMPOSSIBLE, and women like Sapna are showing us how its done.

et amidst the quiet lane of Pali Hill in Bandra, stands this 25-year-old eatery, which has almost become a synonym for Bandra and its people. Yes, I am talking about what now seems omnipresent with multiple branches: Candies! The amusing part is that even though today Candies seems to be an exclusive Bandra hangout, the first ever outlet of Candies was opened in Lokhandwala in Andheri, West. Now that is surprising, isn’t it? Almost every hooder in Bandra and the vicinity is aware of the place, and most of us even travel across hoods, just to get a taste of the good old Candies menu and their fun ambience. The old world charm of Candies comes from its Portuguese style white bungalow, contrasted with blue and dotted with numerous charming lights, Turkish lanterns and hanging lamps. Not only this, there walls speak a million stories with mosaic art portraying famous people from across the world such as The Dalai Lama, Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs among many others.

e’s Day w i t h a T w i s t n i t n e l a V by Zeba Akhtar

alentine’s Day is just around the corner. There were times when this concept was hardly known to people and over the years, it has changed into a major celebration. Gifts, cards, flowers, chocolates, jewelry etc. all seem to have become the traditional emblems denoting this day of love. But don’t you think that all of that is too mainstream? How many years in a row will you be able to get away with the same old card, gift, chocolates routine? After all, if you are planning to make someone special, then why not take it a notch higher? Now you must be wondering what exactly can those ideas be. Well, we have got it covered for you!

Read on and choose your pick amongst some of our favourite off beat ideas for Valentine’s Day! 1. Camping: Yes, you got that right. Are you not bored of the clichéd candle light dinner in some uptown restaurant already? Love is all about companionship so why not get together and go on a camping trip. Trek up a hill, slide down the river, or lie down and count the stars in the wilderness; the options are plenty! Mumbai has so many places nearby that will take your camping trip by storm. 2. Tattoos: And by this, I do not mean
tattooing the name of your love on your arm! Places like Alien’s Tattoo, have customized tattoos for Valentine’s Day that you can either sport for your loved one, or if your loved one is tattoo enthusiast then you can go ahead and gift them an all new tattoo! 3. Cocktail night in: We have all done the whole ‘shooting cocktails in a club’ routine. This time make it different. The idea is to make your loved one feel the effort, hence go ahead, and play bar tender for once. You could easily go through a couple of videos on YouTube and use their chosen poison to whip up some fancy cocktails at home. Add to that some good music, and you are all set for the perfect night in! 4. Go out on a yacht: You live in a city like Mumbai. So why not make the most of the sea. There are tonnes of yacht rental services that you can avail. Book a private yacht, pop up some champagne, and go out into the sea. Do not forget to take photos in the mesmerizing sunset. 5. Attend The Ballard Estate Festival: Another excuse for you to visit town. If you as a couple happen to be a lover of festivals, performances, food pop ups and the likes then go on to Mumbai’s Ballard Estate Festival, where the two of you can have some quality time together by engaging in each other’s hobbies. A perfect Valentine’s Day gift could be anything under the sun! All you need is just the right amount of effort! Hope you have a splendid Valentine’s Day!

TAROTSCOPE
YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2016
THE YEAR AHEAD FOR AQUARIUS Happy Birth Anniversary! You can cause a dull and stagnant relationship to flare up with new excitement this year, if it is important to you. Else, you can let it go. Increase your level of physical activity for better health. Finances will see a rise in expenditure and you can use this for useful investments. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) A month of discovering that a little caution can go a long way! You will then be able to have just what you need to keep everything, including relationships, health and finances, just the way you want. Play safe now, if possible for you. It would be hugely beneficial.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): You have the precise resources you need and you will need to also remind yourself of this fact, in this month, as too much will be happening all around you. Do whatever it takes to keep your focus on well being. Take good care of your diet and finances.
GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): A strange but informative month for you, as you find out a lot of behind-the-scenes stories. Nothing drastic will happen, but a few jumps and starts do offer themselves. Regular and routine healthcare and practical economising will help.
CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): You will feel the strongest of under-currents all around and you need to stay close to everything that reassures you. There is nothing to fear. Watch your diet and expenditure, and keep both of them routine.
44
LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): Things seem to be awaiting your exciting interaction. It would be beneficial to remember that comfort zone is necessary for safety. Find ways that interest you to look after your health and finances, but from what you already know. Stay away from the unknown, for now. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): You are well-equipped to deal with the tremors you will feel in the reality all around, remember that. Many seem to be reaching an end of their run. Perhaps, it is for the better. Watch your diet and spending, and you are good to go.
LIBRA
(September 23rd-October 22nd):
Like a pro performer under the spotlight, keep your wits about yourself in all contingencies. Know that you have the necessary resources to deal with the current situation. Don’t be fooled by apparent difficulties; they are actually the twists that make the tale interesting. Play it safe in matters of health and personal finance.

SCORPIO
(October 23rd November 22nd):
You will have a good time this month, much to the surprise of others. What may unground you is the plight of people close to you, but your good fortune can rub off on them. In all situations, don’t over-exert. Look after your health and finances in predictable ways.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):
Your attitude in dealing with life is the winner this month. Don’t bother about making sense of everything that happens, because the senseless, too, can happen. Do, however, keep a firm hold of your innate wisdom, and use that in huge dollops in matters of health and finance. Watch your diet and spend judiciously.
CAPRICORN
(December 22nd–January 19th):
Keep in mind that resources for everything are always present, and you will be able to deal with all the clearings and endings that are likely this month. You will be able to let go of deadwood. Health will need you to stop experimenting and decide on a routine. Finance will be good.
AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): You will suddenly have great clarity in what you need to keep in your life and what is worth your energy. High emotional quotient present now may make you uncomfortable, but you can deal very well with it. Health, with routine care, will be good. Expenses are high, but you can make them profitable.
PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): Underlying everything that happens now is an emotional engagement that you will understand perfectly. Yet, refrain from sharing your understanding with others. Only share your good will and care. You will need to be practical about health, and include routines that calm you. For finances, ask for advice from knowledgeable people.
