Tolerance – What’s wrong with the world mama? “The ability or willingness to tolerate or accept the existence of opinions or behavior that one dislikes or disagrees with”- that’s how the dictionary defines the word ‘Tolerance’. The important part being “that one dislikes or disagrees with”. Are we a tolerant nation? Are we as humans tolerant by nature? Deep down the answer may be probably NO. But what made us human and in a way in which we defined ourselves human probably has to do with how we chose to be tolerant. Communities, civilizations, and societies were formed based on collectiveness of the people. It was the first step of Tolerance that humans must have taken. Tolerance towards another individual who most likely is different in his or her DNA and behavior. Disagreements and dislikes are bound to happen. It’s how we handle them is what defines us. Each one of us is entitled to our opinion. They could be right or wrong. It’s okay to even judge them in your individual capacity. We have always blamed ‘actions’ of individuals and nations in the smallest battle to the biggest war. I’d like to believe it’s not those actions. It’s the ‘reactions’ that lead to the unwanted and a lot of times irreversible situations. Reactions that are a result Management of intolerance. Every individual “I” has full Neeraj Vasudeva control over changing the course of things by his or her Action and equally important Reaction. Excerpts from one of my favorite songs by Black Eyed Peas that speaks better than any other words: “What’s wrong with the world, mama People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas I think the whole world addicted to the drama Only attracted to things that’ll bring you trauma

But if you only have love for your own race Then you only leave space to discriminate And to discriminate only generates hate And when you hate then you’re bound to get irate, yeah

Madness is what you demonstrate And that’s exactly how anger works and operates Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight Take control of your mind and meditate Let your soul gravitate to the love, y’all, y’all”

This is the month of Christmas. It is the time for festivities, giving and sharing. Happy times. Therefore, I would like to end this year on a happy note. Santa never saw the difference in any kid while making his way down the chimney. He just came down to a kid’s house. On behalf of all the kids (small kids, grown up kids, old kids, uncle-aunty age kids, and senior citizen kids) here is asking Santa to come down everyone’s chimneys with the Gift of Love and Tolerance.

Habits To

Keep You

Stylish

by Priya Shah

H

ave you ever found yourself wondering - “How does that XYZ person look impeccable all the time?” “What makes them so Classy?” “What’s that thing you’ve got missing in you?” “Do brands make a person look Chic?” “What are the fashion rules that you must follow?” “Which magazine/channel/ individual can teach them to me?” If these questions leave you brooding most times, there is one thing you need to know: Some individuals are born with a great sense of STYLE but few aren’t. Heck! So what? Style is a skill like swimming, dancing or singing which can be acquired by “Anybody who wishes to acquire it.” To be very honest, I too, belong to the latter category, but who can guess so? To reach that goal one needs to religiously practice the following pointers until it becomes a habit. Once this happens, you yourself will feel stylish and notice how gradually others start noticing & following you.

8

Being “Well-Dressed” is an everyday thing Whether it’s a day at home, grocery shopping, stroll in the garden, casual Friday at work, movie with friends, family outing, brunch with colleagues or movie premier night – these individuals always look put together. Let me tell you, it requires a great amount of effort and motivation to get out of the “Ah! I’m just going to a random grocery store” mode and get into something refined. You can wander around in your pajama pants all day or do the same in a maxi dress, the decision is yours. It’s a truly consistent habit to stick to.

1

2

Outfits are planned well in advance We all know that clothes communicate! They know the importance of it. They also know mornings are “hectic” which may not be the right time to spend 20 minutes in front of a closet wondering what to wear! So every night before heading off to sleep, they go to the closet, try out new combinations, and plan clothes that suit their day’s purpose. Meetings, presentations, client meetings or

December 2015 | Volume1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

weddings, surprise party or brunch with friends, lunch with family or dinner date – their outfit including accessories, shoes, and handbag is always ready.

3

Style Inspiration is borrowed most of the times Great styling is creativity at its best. Creativity of any form is usually borrowed & maneuvered as per one’s own taste. Advertising, art, fashion, jewelry- all of these forms take inspiration from earlier works in their respective fields and alter it as per current trend and taste. For style inspiration, there are ‘n’ number of fashion and lifestyle bloggers from all over the world available on Instagram, Pinterest, Wooplr & Tumblr to learn from. Stylish Individuals do not hesitate to make use of inspiration from others – they follow people they enjoy looking at, think of their wardrobe, and incorporate it with elegance on their own self.

4

Labels and Brands aren’t the end of the world “Clothes, only from big brands can make one look chic!” is a myth. We often see celebrities wearing branded dresses in magazines and

Masters in Image Consulting, which transformed my life, and now I assist others to feel great about themselves.

television, which allures us to buy them. Something most people do not know is that brands often send their stuff to celebs to flaunt and fascinate us. It is great to own a high fashion piece, but may be, not at the price you have to pay. Stylish Individuals know how to carry off Bandra accessories with a branded dress. They just know how to mix high fashion with street wear. Here’s what I do – Often my classic pieces (LBD, White formal Shirt, Linen Kurta) are from brands, while accessories, handbags, trendy pieces (neon scarf, monkey print pajama, bow dress) are from random/ non-branded stores. Works out more economically! Fashion Rules are meant to be broken This one’s my personal favorite. Yves Saint Laurent, a French fashion designer born in 1930’s quoted “Fashion fades, Style is Eternal.” Fashion trends thrive from old times, but importantly back then too, people realized that fashion rules were meant to be broken and meant to be bent, and twisted into a style of our own, which is now popularly known as “personal style.” In today’s times as well, fashion magazines and different people will come up with “Fashion Rules” but I feel if we don’t modify those rules as per our personal taste & try new combinations, then what’s the fun?

5

Keep signature back up always ready! Personal Style is something that you can carry off any time of the day, week, month, or year. That’s called the signature style of an individual. There are days when we have surprise

6

plans or no spare time to plan, on those days these individuals always have “this signature style” ready as a backup. Be it a kurta + Palazzo, Jeans + Tee + Scarf, all whites, all blacks or a particular color in their cluster.

“Clothes, only from big brands can make one look chic!” is a myth

7

Realize the Importance of Grooming These Individuals are stylish because they practice the above 6 habits and lastly they realize the importance of self-Grooming on an “everyday basis.” Most times self-grooming is solely related to hygiene but it’s much more than that. Food habits, water intake, hair-care, skin-care, teeth care, nail-care, and body-care – they pay regular attention to each of these things, which creates an overall effect on their appearance. As a teen, I was never elegant or had a sense of style in me, honestly with time I observed other people whom I would admire & at the same time, I underwent December 2015 | Volume 1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

Now Medical Director, she is leading the medical Trica Hair Clinic team at Trica Hair Clinic, a chain specializing in result oriented solutions for all hair problems. You can reach her at snehal@ trica.in.

Trica Experts! Q. I am a 29 years old, software professional. I have been having a lot of hair fall since 6 months or so. Have tried some home remedies but nothing seems to be working. What do you recommend for me? Aryan Kapoor

specialist doctor who can get to the root of the problem. You may need to do some tests like vitamin D and B12 levels etc. Once this is taken care of, your hair can be revived and regrown with the right treatment.

Dear Aryan, Hair fall can happen due to many reasons; a few of the common reasons in men are nutritional stress, male hormonal influence, and hair follicle infections. We frequently find that skipping breakfasts, irregular dietary and sleep habits, and stress are the main culprits in accelerating hair loss in men. The reason for this is, for our bodies, our hair is the least important organ. Therefore, when there is any metabolic stress or deficiency, the body diverts all nutrients and blood supply to the important organs thereby leaving the hair high and dry. This lack of nutrients makes the hair go into premature shedding. Unless we understand the root cause and take care of it, the hair fall is unlikely to stop. I recommend that you consult hair

Q. My daughter is 18 years old. She had very good hair till a year ago. She got highlights done on her hair last year, her hair problems started 2-3 months after that. Hair became rough, dry, and fly away. She started using hair ironing off and on, since then to manage the hair better. She also uses the special damaged hair shampoos and conditioners. Now she has been having a lot of hair fall and dandruff. What could be the reason for this? Geraldine Pereira

10

Dear Geraldine, The problem in your daughter’s case seems to point towards cumulative oxidative damage to hair follicle. Let me explain this. Hair highlights or bleaching etc. use chemicals to open up the hair structure so that the color can penetrate. The chemicals used include hydrogen

December 2015 | Volume1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

peroxide and similar compounds. These release free oxygen radicals, which can cause oxidative damage to hair roots or follicles in long run. Continuing chemical or heat treatments aggravate the damage further. So in a nutshell, there are two kinds of damages - damage to the dead part of hair in the form of dryness, roughness, brittleness and damage to the hair follicle or root in the form of weak roots, hair fall, premature greying of hair. The special shampoo and conditioners that your daughter may be using, contain ingredients that coat the hair structure and try to balance the pH. These and hair spa treatments may help in the first type of damage. However, they cannot repair the oxidative damage to the hair roots. She should stop any ironing, blow drying or any other chemical or heat treatment to hair until the damage is repaired, otherwise the hair roots may get weaker and weaker. Additionally, her hair problems may also be aggravated by stress of exams as well as teenage hormonal changes and nutritional deficiencies if any. So that too needs to be taken care of.

What is the

OST OF YOU WILL HAVE A WORKOUT CHECKLIST, WHICH YOU WILL TRY TO STICK TO, TO LOOK AT YOUR BEST DURING THE UPCOMING XMAS EVE AND NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS. THE MOOT QUESTION IS – DO YOU HAVE A CHECKLIST FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FITNESS TOO. LET US TAKE A LOOK AT THE FINANCIAL FITNESS CHECKLIST ESSENTIALS.

Before joining a gym or beginning an exercise regimen, you have certain goals in mind. It could be muscle building, overall health improvement, etc. Likewise, you should have financial goals. Along with listing the financial goals, you should know the approximate value of these goals. Do not forget to include the impact of inflation.

2

There are different pieces of equipment, which serve different purposes, and work differently on our body; different financial goals need different approaches. The need for flexibility of the investment also needs to be kept in mind since needs and goals change and evolve. One product will not be sufficient to cover all needs. For long- term goals you can look at the New Pension Scheme, long term Bonds, long duration debt funds, and mutual funds with high allocation to equity, Public Provident Fund and real estate. As you move closer to your goal, the exposure to equity should reduce. You

14

can add a small allocation of gold for diversification purposes. For medium term goals hybrid Funds like Monthly Income schemes or balanced mutual funds, provide a combination of steady earnings from fixed income oriented investments with a combination of equity to boost returns. For near term goals one can look at short term, ultra-short term funds, and liquid funds.

3

Cardio has various benefits with some of them being shedding off excess fat, improved metabolism, and a healthy heart. Similarly, if you have high interest loans, unpaid credit card bills, or expensive and low return generating investment instruments in your portfolio, you should first get rid of your credit card bills, which charge a very high rate of interest. Also, if you have a high interest loan, go for a balance transfer since many banks have reduced their

base rates recently. You may even take a fresh loan at a lower rate and repay your existing high interest loan.

4

Just as regular exercise is a healthy habit, regular saving is a wealthy habit. Save regularly through strategies like Systematic Investment Plans and structured savings plans.

fitness mantra for your finances?

5 6

Whilst you like to keep a check on the amount of calories you consume, you should also keep a check on your expenses. Make a budget and try to be within that limit.

After a regular workout, you evaluate how far you have reached. In much the same way, you need to revisit your goals regularly, and review progress. Just as it is important to see what is working right for you and what is not with your exercise regimen, you need to regularly review you portfolio.

Before joining a gym or beginning an exercise regimen, you have certain goals in mind

Zardozi embroidery is beautiful metal by Anu Mehra embroidery, which once was used to embellish the attire of the Kings and the royals in India. It was also used to adorn walls of the royal tents, scabbards, wall hangings and the paraphernalia of regal elephants and horses. Zardozi embroidery work involves making elaborate designs, using gold and silver thread. Further adding to the magnificence of the work are the studded pearls and precious stones. Initially, the embroidery was done with pure silver wires and real gold leaves. However, today artisans make use of a combination of copper wire, with a golden or silver polish, and a silk thread. Zardozi embroidery has been in existence in India from the time of the Rig Veda. It prospered during the Mughal Emperor, Akbar, but later a loss of royal patronage and industrialization led to its decline. Today, it is popular in the Indian cities of Lucknow, Farrukhabad, Chennai and Bhopal. We at Charisma are committed to bringing you the best designs, which will set you a class apart. inter is just around the corner and so is the New Year. People have many questions about how to manage skin in the dry, cold weather. There is a drop in humidity, which leads to dryness of the skin. Many times one would experience itching, irritation or flaking of their skin. So how does one take care of their skin and still have that radiant glow in winter. With the change in weather, we need to change our skin care routine. Coconut oil application for body before bath works wonders in winter for dry skin conditions. Long showers with hot water are known to strip away your skin’s natural oils, so it is advisable to take a bath with warm water and stay in shower for short time. If one uses soap for bathing, use emollient soaps containing moisturising factors like glycerine or almond oil. Remember to use a body moisturising lotion immediately after you step out of your bath and also at night before sleeping.

How not to fall SICK as Seasons Change by Bhavna Kapoor

T

o many of us, changing seasons are synonymous with falling sick, be it cold, headaches, flu or viral fever. When the season is changing from say, summer to winter, our body is trying to adjust/cope with changes in the atmosphere. This is the body’s nature or intuitive wisdom, very much a part of our DNA. To do this, it borrows energy that would otherwise be used for our normal functioning such as digestion, repair work, and elimination. As a result, immunity goes a little low and digestion becomes a bit sluggish. At such a point, we need to help the body by making appropriate changes in diet / lifestyle; else, we run the risk of falling sick. What are some of the changes we can look at making? 1. Slow down, make time to relax and rest more. If possible, sleep more. I do not know anyone who does not feel more sleepy than usual at seasonal cusps. This is our body’s wisdom showing us the way, and if we just listen, we will sail through. If we just listen to the body, we will realize it is not asking for much. A 20-minute power nap or just a half an hour extra in the night can in fact work wonders. 2. Eat light, which translates to eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, especially seasonal ones. These take up less energy to digest, and energize the body to be able to adapt to change. 3. Cleanse the system. Our body uses the maximum energy to digest food, and

18

if we give it a break from that by fasting, we can actually free up that energy for many other useful functions. And if we simultaneously replace food with pure fruit and vegetable juices, flooding our system with essential nutrients, the effects for the rest of the season can be quite amazing! We can choose to go on a juice fast for a day, 3 days, or 5 days, depending on various factors such as age, health history, and current lifestyle. If juice fasting is too extreme, one can at least support the system with one green juice a day, consuming cleansing foods such as Sweet basil seeds and Aloe Vera, or having warm herbal teas in the morning or during the day. 4. Consume antibacterial foods. Some common anti-bacterial elements that already exist in our diet are ginger, turmeric, onion, and garlic. Add these in generous quantities. A great immunity booster shot that you can have each morning is drinking a shot of Ginger -Turmeric Tea. Boil raw turmeric powder and fresh ginger in water; add jaggery syrup to it and your shot is ready. That said, nourishment takes place over a period and immunity cannot be built overnight. Immunity building needs to take place throughout the year, along with changes in lifestyle that are more

in rhythm with nature, so that we can be ready for change at any time :)

CHOLESTEROL Is

ESSENTIAL by Dr. Lily Keswani, MD, DGO, Integrative Medicine

C

HOLESTEROL is essential, a basic raw material made by nearly every cell in the body. It is NECESSARY for: • Hormone production – oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone and stress hormones. (That is why some men on statins can develop ED.) • Bile salts to absorb and digest fats • It is a major component of cell membrane and organelles • A quarter of the total body cholesterol is in the brain. It is an important component of the myelin sheath, which coats nerve cells and nerve fibres. It is necessary for nerve cells to communicate with each other. • Low cholesterol levels are linked to poorer cognitive performance – brain fog, memory loss is often seen with statin use. • Cholesterol plays a big role in fighting infection. It functions as a powerful antioxidant in the body and protects against free radical damage to tissues. Cholesterol as a predictor of heart disease is a MYTH. In 2012, researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology concluded that women with “high cholesterol” (greater than 270 mg/dl) had a 28 percent lower mortality risk than women with “low cholesterol” (less than 183 mg/dl). In 2013, the prominent London cardiologist Seem Malhotra argued in

the British Medical Journal that you should ignore advice to reduce your saturated fat intake, because it’s actually increasing your risk for obesity and heart disease.

giving ingredients. And no, you do not need to limit them, either. Enjoy!

Your body requires cholesterol to survive, which is why it produces it. A real danger as we age is that our cholesterol levels can get too low—which is only exacerbated by taking statins! If the cholesterol dips too low, it will increase the risk of depression, stroke, violent behaviour and suicide. Women with the highest cholesterol actually live the longest! Dr. Meyer Texon MD, a respected pathologist practicing at New York University Medical Centre, observes that accusing saturated fat and cholesterol for hardening of the arteries is like accusing white blood cells of causing infection, rather than helping the immune system address it. And all this means that we can get rid of the great cholesterol fear which has been ruling our lives and dictating our eating habits. No more egg white omelettes! Bring on the yolks! Yolks are chock-full of health

LL | food Chef Around The Corner Ranveer Brar

FROM AWADH TO NEW YORK: COOKING A BRAND by Zeba Akhtar

Y

OU HAVE SEEN HIM COOK MAGIC ON TV; NOW HEAR HIM TALK HIS HEART OUT! WE CAUGHT UP WITH CHEF RANVEER BRAR, AND GOT A FEW INSIDE STORIES JUST FOR OUR READERS!

Q. They say that cooking is a passion, how would you describe it for yourself?

Cooking is all I got. Ever since I knew that, I could be a cook I gave it all I had. Yes cooking is about technique and handwork but the truth is cooking is most of all about passion. I have always believed that cooking is about the intangible and true passion always shows up in the food you cook.

Q.

From Lucknow, to New York and other places, how has your journey been? It has been an awesome journey! Starting from the streets to opening five star hotels and then opening my restaurants in the US. I never thought the road I had taken would take me places and the best part is the exciting journey continues.

Q.

What are the key milestones in your career as a chef? I believe milestones in a journey are to keep you motivated along the way and my motivation comes from looking back at the chefs I have given this Industry. For me, the most exciting thing is the

22

executive Chefs that have once worked with me and trained under me. To see how they have molded and to see them progress in their own spaces is the most rewarding feeling. I look forward to those milestones.

Q.

Heading a restaurant, or hosting and cooking on a TV show, which experience do you prefer? All of them, on any given day! I love the spaces I am in and consider myself blessed to be able to express myself in so many different ways. Being surrounded by food in any possible way always makes me happy.

Q.

You have been a part of so many restaurants and five star cuisine chains, which project would you rate the closest to your heart and why? Opening “Sevilla” the Spanish restaurant at the Claridges, New Delhi was indeed the most gratifying project I have undertaken so far. It was a renowned Indian restaurant prior to being renovated and hence was a challenge to build a brand. However, “Sevilla” is the most awarded Spanish restaurant in the country and it gives me

much satisfaction to see it do well.

Q.

Which cuisine is your chosen one and why? Awadhi cuisine is my chosen one as I have grown up with it and trained in it.

Q. What is your signature style when it comes to cooking?

Spontaneous and respectful cooking is what I do and am proud of.

Q. Every chef has a couple of intrinsic

ingredients, which he cannot do without, what does that stand for in your case? I simply cannot do without Mushrooms and black pepper. They are my absolute favorite ingredients.

Q. What are your comments regarding

the evolving landscape of food and restaurant eating in India? I think as a country we are evolving and rediscovering ourselves in the food space. Whether it is the cuisine or the experience, dining out has become a key

aspect of our life. The most satisfying part as a chef is that in this process we are going back to our roots and giving regional Indian food the respect it deserves.

Q. Having explored different genres as

a chef, what are your plans ahead and projects that you look forward to?

The future is looking very exciting. I am launching many new restaurants very soon in India as well as foreign shores. Besides the TV shows, I am also looking forward to some excellent brand associations. You will also find my book up on shelves next year. 2015 has been kind, as I have been blessed to work with exciting brands and inspiring people such as Philips, Go Cheese, Zespri and many more. Insha’Allah, 2016 will be equally amazing.

Tough Times. We all experience some of the worst moments in life. When we lose someone, when someone hurts us. Like these, there are many other circumstances in life. We become weak, feel terrible, and are heartbroken. However, we have to sometimes live with such moments, life is not a fairy tale as shown in the movies where everything becomes perfectly fine, and the Hero gets the Heroine and has the perfect ending. In reality, we need to be our own Hero and it is in our hands to make our life a fairy tale and give a good if not a perfect ending to even the worst situations in life. Here are some quotes, which might make you feel good and strong about your soul: Sometime life sucks. Sometimes life gets so hard that you do not want to be put through it anymore. Sometimes life is so stressful and all you want to do is to cry. Still sometimes life is beautiful. Sometimes life is happy. And all you want to do is smile. Sometimes you just have to stay positive and push through all of the hard times. Why? Because life is worth it. You are worth it. - Unknown When people make you feel unwanted, don’t leave to make them feel sad or guilty, they won’t. Leave because you no longer have a reason to stay. Sometimes you have to be strong for yourself. What’s meant to be will end up good and what’s not- won’t. Love is worth fighting but sometimes you can’t be the only one fighting. At times, people need to fight for you. If they won’t, you just have to move on and realize what you gave them was more than they were willing to give you and more than they deserve. - Unknown What’s difficult in life is to stay centered when somebody does or says something that tempts us to close our hearts because their heart was closed. That is hard. But that is also how we grow. We go through those circumstances in order to evolve into people who can hold to our loving center no matter what the world throws at us. -Marianne Williamson

SHIWARA RESIDENT MS. NEELAM KUMAR IS A WRITER OF FIVE BOOKS INCLUDING ONE WITH MR. KHUSHWANT SINGH. SHE IS ALSO MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ‘9 TO 5 CORPORATE LOUNGE - THE TRAINING HUB’. A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER, A LIFE SKILLS COACH, A CORPORATE TRAINER, AND A COUNSELLOR, SHE IS A MULTIFACETED DY-NAMIC WOMAN. HOWEVER, HER GREATEST QUALITY IS THAT SHE IS A FIGHTER AND A SURVIVOR. SHE WAS STRUCK BY CANCER NOT ONCE BUT TWICE. BUT WITH WILL POWER AND THROUGH SPIRITUALITY AND GENEROUS DOSES OF HUMOR SHE FOUGHT THIS DEADLY DISEASE AND EMERGED VICTORIOUS. HER LATEST BOOK ‘TO CANCER, WITH LOVEMY JOURNEY OF JOY’ HAS BEEN PUBLISHED BY HAY HOUSE AND IS BEING DISTRIBUTED BY PENGUIN. IT IS THE FIRST HUMOROUS BOOK ON CANCER TO COME OUT OF INDIA AND HAS A FOREWORD BY MANISHA KOIRALA.

Q.

Tell us about your journey and about your first book. I was brought up in Russia. Therefore, I did not know any English. So when my parents got me to India my teacher said this girl is wood sitting on wood. She will never learn the English language. So I spent my entire life trying to prove her wrong and went on to write five books in Eng-lish. This shows that life will always give you a choice. Whether you believe the people, who sup-port you or the people who feel you will never make it. My parents believed

30

in me. My father al-ways thought I had writing talent. After school, I did English literature followed by Post Graduation in public relations and advertising. All this while I was figuring out where my interests lay. I found Indian and Russian words dancing in my head. That cocktail I had to address. I put pen to paper and dashed off a few stories. My first story was published in Femina, which won me a lot of recog-nition. I continued to write furiously. I became a columnist for The Times of India. Then I was se-lected for an all India competition to India’s largest steel company SAIL as the editor

December 2015 | Volume1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

of their Eng-lish magazine. Hence, writing became my profession. Then one day a magical occurrence took place. I received a blue envelope from the United States of America. It was from the rotary foundation, Illinois. They said they were impressed with my writing and had sent me ten thousand dollars to study anywhere in the world. It was a hefty amount in those days. I flew off to the United States of America and became an investigative journalist. My first book was born in the U.S. It is called ‘I, A Woman’.

Q. How did you and Mr. Khushwant Singh come together to write a book?

I had met him at a conference where I was introduced to him. He liked the way I spoke. He asked me “Have you ever written anything serious”? I had written two books by the time. I told him “Excuse me; I am a journalist from America.” He was very good at puncturing egos. He said, “Alright, are you ready to unlearn everything you have learnt”? I said, “No, why should I”? He said, “You are too American. What have you done for your country? What about India”? He said we must write a book on the regional wealth of our country. He made me go to every state in India and pick up two literary gems that had not been translated into English. Those were pre-Google days! I went to every place personally to research. I learnt writing at his feet. He used to keep tearing my paper, making me re-write again. He said, “Writing is all about re-writing.” That is why that book is a best-seller. It is a cultural showcase for India. The name of the book is ‘Our Fa-vorite Indian Stories by Khushwant Singh and Neelam Kumar’.

like ‘Landmark’ at In-finiti Mall closes down, it is very sad feeling. We must give a boost to literature. We must have book events, book meet-up’s, workshops. I mean where are the book clubs. That culture has to come here. We have to start that in Andheri West. This is the vibrant pulsating hotspot of the city. We have everything available for the physical body here. Now let us have something for the soul and the spirit here as well.

If you do not prepare your heart and your spirit the medicines will not work on you at all. Ms. Neelam Kumar’s latest book is available online and in leading bookstores. She also takes workshops on ‘How to write your book in six easy steps’. Contact: neelamku@yahoo.com , www. thetraininghub.co

Q. Tell us about your book ‘To Cancer, With Love-My Journey of Joy’.

When cancer struck me, I decided I would make this a memorable event in my life. When my chemotherapy was being done, I started writing this book. I said to myself that I am going to be full of joy. That I will become a source of inspiration for everyone who reads my work. I practice Buddhism and recite the four powerful words ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’. The moment I chanted those words great joy bubbled inside me. The medicines will work only on your body. However, if you do not prepare your heart and your spirit the medicines will not work on you at all. I was de-termined to live. I thank cancer for coming in to my life and giving me wonderful gifts. Earlier I had these long locks but now I have short curly hair, which looks very stylish. People ask me which beauty parlor you visit, I tell them it is chemotherapy. It gave me the gifts of compassion as deep as the sea and perspective as vast as the ocean. This is a book anyone facing any sort of problem in their life can pick up and relate to.

Q. Any changes you would like to see in Andheri west?

This place has everything except enough bookstores. When a huge space December 2015 | Volume 1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition) 31

ometimes the people behind great movements are like any one of us, what makes them stand apart is their work for humanity. These two women work passionately and without gluttony for materialism towards helping these children from our neighboring slums to get a few extra classes after their school hours. Why do they do this? They say that most parents of affluent children can afford after school tuitions but the children living in slums that go to municipal schools are hard-pressed for money and these teachers would like to help by giving personalized attention to these children’s academic weaknesses or strengths and help them achieve a lot more success academically. Let us get to know these Hooders not as the teachers or for the work that they do, which is already very commendable but let us get to know them as the individuals that

they are. A zoom into their thoughts and what a usual day is like for them.

Neha Waghulkar I am an Arts student from SNDT College. I come to this center to teach these children every day of the week except on the weekends. My day begins with rushing to college, and then to this center by 2: 30pm. I teach all subjects to these students from the grades 1st to 3rd. After I finish teaching here, I hurry home to help my mother with household work and later catch up on my coursework until the wee hours in

the night. I dream of teaching in schools after I have graduated from college. I want to continue to teach because I feel so much for the cause of education. This profession gives me immense contentment. The admiration and respect I get from these little children makes me want to be nowhere else other than this center and continue to be in no other profession. School life is the most memorable for me, the time spent with friends are a treasure to preserve forever. It is true that grades count, and if I work hard on my studies it would help me realize my dream of teaching but I would still advise everyone to make the most of their school and college lives. As a teacher I obviously tell all my students to work very hard, but being a student as well, I also understand the importance of having meaningful friends and making memories with them. Therefore, I would always advise all students to balance their academics, their playtime, and their social activities and not to neglect or imbalance any particular aspect of their growing years.

Anupama I shifted to Lokhandwala, Mumbai from Bihar when I got married and I have been a resident here ever since. I have been teaching in this center from the past 6years, this center at AshaKiran has become a part of my lifestyle. There isn’t a day that has seen a deter in my enthusiasm to be with these students and to teach them. There have been many who have advised me to teach for money. But I feel that life has given me so much, has blessed me with an opportunity to gain education that I feel the need to give back and help these children achieve the same. I want to make positive contribution to the lives of these children. Help them achieve their dreams, and overcome their weaknesses in academics. Within this group of children one aims to be a pilot, a doctor, a singer and so on. I hope they do achieve what they dream of. They study in Hindi medium schools and are hesitant in expressing themselves in English. I want to help them get over this fear.

I would always advise all students to balance their academics, their playtime, and their social activities and not to neglect or imbalance any particular aspect of their growing years

WHAT COULD YOU BE DOING THIS CHRISTMAS Since the city gets barely cold even on Christmas, we better be giving up on ideas of a white Christmas! However, we still have many activities that you could indulge in with your loved ones during the festive season! • Re-do your room in a Christmas theme. What you need it lots of fairy lights, a couple of red and green upholstery. It could be something as simple as putting up red curtains and lining them with lights. Go ahead, give it a try! • Bake a cake! Yes! Nothing says Christmas like a freshly baked plum cake. The internet is filled with different recipes for plum cakes, so go ahead and bake a fresh one for your family! • Get an eco-friendly Christmas tree home, call in your gang, and begin a full-fledged Christmas tree decoration. Bells, stars, lights and a little bit of confetti. Nothing beats such good times. • Volunteer as Santa! Yes, find out about a local orphanage or an old age home, gang up and raise minor funds and surprise these kids and old people with a few gifts and games. Nothing speaks of Christmas as much as the joy of giving. • Attend a midnight mass! Yes, especially if you can manage to go all the way up to Mount Mary Church in Bandra! Yes, this shall definitely be a one in a lifetime experience. • Have a potluck lunch! Pool in with your friends, cousins, or gym group and organize a potluck lunch. Experiment with Christmas staples such as Turkey roast, stuffing, yams and pumpkin roast along with some good wine and cake! Do not forget to take pictures. • If you happen to be a partygoer, then most clubs in each hood have something or the other Christmas special going on. So call up your besties, because it is time to stomp the dance floor and have fun!

Most of us are usually so lazy that we keep our entire gift shopping until the last minute and eventually end up with hurriedly bought overpriced gifts. This Christmas season, plan your gifts in advance and make your loved ones feel special and cared for! Here are a few ideas, which you could use when gifting your close people.

www.shutterstock.com/ Evgeny Atamanenko

• Chuck the easy way out. While clothes make for useful gifts, they may not be the most thoughtful ones. • Make sure that while choosing a gift, you keep in mind the personality of a person. • For someone who loves to read, a special edition of a book may be a good idea. Alternatively, custom made diaries and notebooks can be bought for people who love to write or doodle. • Foodies can be gifted with gourmet cheese boxes or flavored chocolates. Good quality wine paired with the best type of cheese may also be a good idea. • If you happen to be good at art, then nothing speaks of a good gift than something made with hands. Draw/ sketch/paint on a canvas, and you could turn it to some great wall art, which will definitely be appreciated. Choose a moment, symbol, or memory, which is close to the two of you. • Gifting an experience can be a different joy altogether! Hence, taking a couple of closed ones out on a picnic, dinner, or a good movie followed by some hearty conversation can also be a great gift. Because after all, one of the best gifts you can give people, is time.

GIFTING IDEAS FOR CHRISTMAS!

CHRISTMAS FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! We all know that Christmas is a big thing, but in some parts of the world, it is even bigger than what we would like to think! We bring to you some of the craziest Christmas Trivia from all over the world! • Over 30 to 35 million Christmas trees are sold in the U.S alone, every year! • Christmas trees are edible. Yes! You could easily eat many parts of a pine tree and pine nuts and cones are especially good for health. • Santa Claus comes from a Dutch folk tale based on Saint Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, who gave gifts on December 6. • Rudolph the reindeer was actually invented for a popular American film in 1938. • IN the Czech Republic, they enjoy dinners of fish soup, eggs, and carp. The number of people at the table must be even, or the one without a partner will die next year. • Christmas purchases account for 1/6 of all retail sales in the U.S. • Christmas Eve in Japan is a good day to eat fried chicken and strawberry shortcake. • “Hot cockles” was a popular game at Christmas in medieval times. It was a game in which the other players took turns striking the blindfolded player, who had to guess the name of the person delivering each blow. “Hot cockles” was still a Christmas pastime until the Victorian era. • In 1647, the English parliament passed a law that made Christmas illegal. Festivities were banned by Puritan leader, Oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry, on what was supposed to be a holy day, to be immoral. The ban was lifted only when the Puritans lost power in 1660. Aren’t these amazing? If you happen to know of any special tradition then don’t forget to share it with us!

“Aaj Khaane Mein Kya hai?”

operations. It is through such exposure over the years, that he decided to venture into the startup world himself and now is the co-owner of two firms, Lensplate Food Photography, along with Risevertise Media, a firm that believes in providing turnkey solutions when it comes to advertising in the FMCG and food sector!

If you happen to be a lover of food blogs, I am pretty sure that you would not have missed out on this line. Yes, you got me right; I am talking about ‘The Big Bhookad’, who has been so far taking the world of food writing by storm. A voracious foodie myself, I had been following ‘The Big Bhookad’ for a really long time, and was intrigued as well as vicariously impressed by the gazillion food posts across different social media platforms. As chance would have it, I eventually got to interview the man himself, and had a chance to know in details about his culinary escapades and ventures over a cup of ‘kadak masala chai’! The blog, ‘The Big Bhookad’ may have begun in 2010, but Adarsh’s love for food has been there ever since he was capable enough to taste food. “My love for food was promoted all the more because of my mother. She was always in the kitchen cooking up something or the other, and as a kid, I would always trail around her in the kitchen, smelling, tasting, learning, and absorbing the flavors. In fact the line “aaj khaane mein kya hai” comes from my everyday childhood staple question right after waking up,” shared Adarsh, as he took me through his life course in humorous details.

A firm follower and creator of trends, he also believes that over the last decade, Indian food has evolved and come a long way. “From food trucks to personalized chef tables, we are exploring and enjoying everything that the world is right now.” Ever since that first post, ‘The Big Bhookad’ has just gone uphill. From shabby blackberry camera food photos, to the currently neatly arranged blog with a trademark, Adarsh has come a long way and that too, not alone. He has become an Instagram and Twitter star and has managed to amass a strong fan base.

From food trucks to personalized chef tables, we are exploring and enjoying everything that the world is right now

Such is the love for food that even before being recognized as ‘The Big Bhookad’, he had gotten an image of a knife and fork tattooed on his wrist as a mark of commitment towards spreading his love and eye for food. The idea behind ‘The Big Bhookad’ was not a blank shot. Even though he wrote his first post after a massively drunk conversation at Janata, Adarsh always knew that somewhere down the line, he had to combine his talent of writing and his love for food, and thus, three months after writing his first post, he decided to publish it.

Apart from being a celebrated foodie online, he is a major digital star so to speak. The multi-talented entrepreneur has been working in the digital space ever since he was in college and has played a foundational role in creating and setting up content across various brands. His association with food and startups date back to the times when he worked for Zomato and has been a key figure in setting up the initial

When asked about his favorite picks across the hood of Bandra and Andheri, ‘The Big Bhookad’ recommended, Pali Bhavan, Joey’s Pizza, Jai Hind Lunch Home and Urban Tadka as his go to places. What sets ‘The Big Bhookad’ apart is not just his love for food, but his overall approach towards it. His writing is a mix of candid humor, wrapped in up to the face criticism, with a touch of technicality, and thus each post in nothing short of an experience. Despite being invited to so many food tastings and competitions all around, he still manages to make time for cooking for himself, and enjoys cooking eggs and breaking breads the most. However, “nothing beats mom made food,” he adds. Social media, content creation, food photography, and blogging did not seem enough, and Adarsh managed to land up a stint on National television with NDTV’s show, Swiss Made Grand Tour, where he takes on the Swiss Roads and goes around experiencing the different flavors that Switzerland had to offer. This may have seemed enough, but Adarsh is not done yet. His plans include, “a series on YouTube, a new unique service of digital-outreach and offline-events for brands; and starting up a food delivery brand (gourmet sandwiches)! If you happen to be a lover of food, and would love to know more about the ever-dynamic food scene in the city, do not forget to follow ‘The Big Bhookad’!

Weaving The Knotty Tales by Zeba Akhtar

W

edding Planning in India still seems to be an unexplored phenomenon as we Indians always have a knack of doing everything all by ourselves rather than delegating it to experts! Moreover, most Indian families consider wedding planners to be an added expense and hence refrain from using their services!

Breaking the myth associated with wedding planning, are two powerful women from the hood, who are all set to change the way wedding planning is viewed in India with their enterprise called ‘The Knotty Tales’. Brainchild of former actress turned entrepreneur Gauri Pradhan Tejwani, and LSE finance graduate turned jewelry designer Pallavee Rajneesh Duggal, ‘The Knotty Tales’ is a step in the field of wedding planning where the two of them plan on providing 360 degree wedding solutions without adding a financial burden upon their clients. “I was looking for a break from television and was always inclined towards a creatively fulfilling career option. It was then that that idea of wedding planning struck me, and the first person I could think of, was Pallavee. We are both like-minded individuals and she was

convinced within a couple of hours,” recalls Gauri who called Pallavee in the middle of the night when the idea struck her! Both of them agree on how having a wedding planner puts the families of the bride and groom at ease. They are less hassled and can peacefully enjoy the ceremonies rather than worrying about the various preparations to handle. “What people forget is that having a wedding planner means they can be rest assured about all the arrangements. Most couples, especially those from nuclear families have too much on their plates before the big day which is why having a wedding planner makes sense”, adds Pallavee when questioned about the feasibility of such a career in a place like India. The Knotty Tales is a venture, which will not just stay restricted to weddings. Be it birthday parties, to farewell lunches and baby showers, these two young entrepreneurs do not want to miss any genre of event. Neither do they believe in restricting the scale of wedding, are on the lookout to experience, and cater to all scales and budgets when it comes to weddings. “We believe that the wedding scene in India for now has been

38

very restricted to the traditional sphere. While we love that part about Indian weddings, one of our key strategy is to bring in a few alternate influences in terms of themes and concepts, which appeal to young couples these days! Our dream project would be to work with a young couple that is open to experiment so that we can let our creative juices flow and work up a never seen before kind of a wedding experience,” echo the partners who seem to be extremely excited about their new venture and are luring clients all over the country. If you wish to explore their creative event concepts, you can look them up on Facebook as The Knotty Tales!

OPENING THE PARTY DOORS IN THE HOOD: BHUVAN NARANG, FROM THE LITTLE DOOR by Zeba Akhtar

A

bout 4 years ago, the party scene in Andheri was very limited and one always looked up to the hood of Bandra for a fun night out. But there was someone who was gradually planning to break that pattern and add the coolness quotient to the hood of Andheri as well. Meet Bhuvan Narang, owner of the famous party place, ‘The Little Door’, a one of a kind bar in Andheri West, which ushered in a trend of party places within the hood. A mass media graduate and an MBA from MICA, Bhuvan was all set to take on the world of advertising and copy writing. But after working for around two years with some of the best firms, this young entrepreneur realized that this was not what he was on the lookout for. “It’s now or never to pursue my dream, it’s now or never, I could always move back to a job, since I was just 22, if things don’t work out well,” says Bhuvan, who wanted to give his passion a real shot. Known for throwing some of the wildest parties amongst his circle, Bhuvan wanted to open up a friendly neighborhood bar where one could unwind after a long day. After looking at places for over 6 months, he finally settled down to the hood of Andheri and thus began the trend set by The Little Door, which opened its doors on the 1st of December, 2012. Such was the response that entries had to be

40

restricted even on a Monday night, and when gradually 20 other bars crept up in Andheri, Bhuvan basked in his moment of glory! A believer and a go-getter, Bhuvan always works with conviction and has more of a ‘let’s get down to business’ approach. “There are two ways to think about it. Don’t try to change something that’s doing well. Alternatively, if you don’t change, its game over! The legends are made for who they are and not who they want to be to catch up with the world. Getting it right in the first go and to be persistent is the key. Everybody is equal at TLD. We believe in harmony and good care of each other. Even a cleaner gets his turn to express his views of better management to the entire team before duty. And this is what translates to the customer which makes us the friendly neighborhood bar.” The Little Door is also a place where talent and art receives immense recognition, which is why the vendors during the flea are not charged for the stalls. That apart Bhuvan believes that the real competition is not between The Little Door and other bars in the hood, but actually between the hoods of Bandra and Andheri and it is high time that the hood of Andheri reclaims the status of the cooler hood! On being asked about his plans, the young trendsetter beamed, “Baby steps so far. It is a brand, which is difficult to replicate because of the personal touch on every aspect. But, there must be an investor somewhere who would believe in the vision and help us take it to places.”

Chronicles of the Hood ECHOING A MILLION YEARS:

GILBERT HILL

by Zeba Akhtar

T

he ever-sprawling hood of Andheri West has within its ambit, a structure that dates back to millions of years.

Yes, I am talking about Gilbert Hill, a 60 feet tall structure very close to Andheri’s famous Bhavan’s College. The hillock was a result of the emission of molten lava, which was emitted over the soil of Maharashtra around 66 million years ago during the Mesozoic Era. Not many of you knew this, did you? The easiest way to reach Gilbert Hill is to take an auto from the Andheri local station and you shall be there within the next fifteen minutes. The name Gilbert Hill was a coinage that took place during the British Era and eventually after independence, there were attempts to classify it as a heritage structure as well. In fact, in 2007, it was declared a grade second heritage site by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. What’s more intriguing is that the only other structure similar to Gilbert Hill in form and composition is the Devil’s Tower, in Wyoming, U.S.A! You can also reach the top of the hill via a fleet of steep staircases that lead all the way. The top of the hill offers a scenic view of the hood of Andheri and is nothing short of gorgeous. It is a great place for photography enthusiasts looking to capture some good panoramic shots. That apart, the top of the hill is marked by a small temple known as the GaonDevi Durgamata Temple and has a small-enclosed garden as well. Not many in the hood are aware of this temple as it is hidden upon the top of the hill. The temple does have many devotees though, and every year during Hanuman Jayanti, there are major processions on the road by them. However, what seems to be massive and undisturbed is actually under threat. Yes, the hill is under the threat of unstableness due to incessant construction activities going around, mostly in the form of residential complexes, which are cropping up around the same. So if you happen to have some time on your hand and are on the lookout for some exploring, then Gilbert Hill is definitely a spot that should be on your list!

Language Development and the Montessori Approach

L

anguage is the most powerful possession of human civilization. It evolved as the need to communicate with our social group. It helps higher level abstraction and is a means for expression. Language cannot be learnt in isolation. Language is acquired during the formative years with the support of three powers – the Absorbent Mind, the Sensitive Periods and Tendencies. The child is endowed with the potential to absorb any language in his

44

environment. The child is born with an innate sensitivity to human sounds – if he or she lives in a bilingual family, the child will pick up both languages in totality with syntax and grammar without being formally taught. The role of the Casa: In the Montessori environment, language is offered as a developmental activity. We do not teach language directly to the child, but link it to various activities through which he will learn by himself. We surround the child with rich, articulate language that’s helps him in refinishing and consolidating his previous achievements. The children are given the freedom to speak and express themselves and interact with their peer group, with the adult listening patiently and responding appropriately. This helps serve as a base for other language skills that are reading and writing. In a Montessori, writing precedes reading. All activities are independent activities so the child is completely absorbed using not just his hearing, but his senses of

December 2015 | Volume1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

sight, touch and movement. The Montessori Adult also serves as a link between the child and the environment, helping him define and consolidate his spoken language by offering various activities like: 1. Terminology for various objects in the home and social environment, items of culture like plants, animals, Geometry, etc. 2. Terminology for Grace and Courtesy – as we live in a social group, the importance of words like ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘namaste’, ‘good morning’, etc. are presented. Thus the child learns appropriate social behavior and gains confidence as a social being. 3. Terminology for various qualities – formal words for qualities that exist in the environment – e.g. dark, heavy, large, smooth, etc. 4. Stories, poems and songs. 5. News period – The children learn to speak and share their thoughts and opinions in the group. Once the child is reading, he is introduced to the Reading Classification, Word Study, Function of Words, Reading Analysis, Interpretative Reading, and Language Extension areas. These exercises are more like games and provide the child with a simple and fun experience with grammar. Reading Analysis and Interpretive Reading take the child into Total Reading. These exercises help the child further recognize that reading sentences and stories give him a glimpse of another’s thoughts and feelings. In a Montessori environment, concrete concepts lead to abstract ones. A child in the Montessori classroom develops a sense of wonder at his own powers and this wonder becomes a motivating force toward further acquisitions.

ADHD by Nivedita Mataliya

Nivedita Mataliya is a counseling psychologist specializing in children and relationship counseling

7

year old Aakash (name changed), was constantly in trouble at school for not completing his notes. He was extremely fidgety. He would not follow instructions. He would speak out of turn. He would move around in class when he was expected to sit quietly. The condition at home was also the same. Aakash would not complete his basic routine without having to be told multiple times. He would get extremely agitated and angry. His mother was frustrated. She told us that she had tried every possible way to “improve” him but nothing seemed to work. Aakash was later diagnosed of ADHD and underwent therapy for the same. He is doing much better now.

It is important that parents know that having ADHD does not mean that the child will be an underachiever. There are plenty of famous personalities that have ADHD. The only thing that is required is to deal with it in the right manner. Dealing with an ADHD child can be exhausting and frustrating. Even the simplest of tasks feel like Herculean acts. Once you understand the issues your child is struggling with, you can work together to find solutions that focus on their strengths.

46

TAROTSCOPE

YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2015

THE YEAR AHEAD FOR SAGITTARIUS Happy Birth Anniversary! The particular problem that has been bothering you with a seeming lack of resolution will now move towards an unexpected but blessed completion. You will enjoy good health, if you are conscientious about self-care. Finances will be more or less stable. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Events will incite you to take action, but it would now be more beneficial to have second thoughts before you charge ahead. Health will benefit from cardio-vascular activities. Monetarily, you are mostly stable.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): You might feel a minor sense of frustration this month, but it will benefit you to use that energy instead to plan for the kind of holiday you enjoy. Keep yourself safe from congestions and pain. Finances will remain much as planned.

GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): A pretty active month lies ahead, and you will feel good about it, too. Also, a good month to experiment. Health will be good. It would be a worthy idea to keep away from financial experiments, unless it is part of your job.

CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): Ideally, you should start winding down your year and planning a vacation. You might be distracted from doing so, but bring yourself back gently into it, much like meditation. Yoga and time-out will benefit your health. Finances will remain the way they have been over the last quarter.

48

LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): While you will appreciate what is going on around you, and may even be entertained, it is possibly not your game, so stepping back is a good idea. Engage in calming activities for good health. Finances are much the same, unless you are planning a lavish holiday. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): This is a good time for you to step back, perhaps ease up your regular schedule as best as you can and focus on learning a few new things that interest you. Take a relaxing holiday. Health will benefit from taking generous care. Finances are much as usual. LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

This is a very good month for you to set your own brand of ideas into motion. Stay alert that some of your input is influenced by other great thinkers, in case you need to course-correct. Health will benefit from any activity that calms you. Expenses mount, so channel spending into what you deem worthy.

December 2015 | Volume1 Issue 8 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

SCORPIO

(October 23rd November 22nd):

This month will cause you to appreciate much of what is sensible around you. Know that you may not always feel like engaging in everything, and that is all right. Protect your health against sluggishness and over-activity, both are equally detrimental. Finances will be predictably earned, spent and saved. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):

Though this month is rather active, most of it is fodder for your brain. It would be good to rock back on your heels and watch the world go by, even if you don’t actually take a holiday. Health needs a good amount of activity to stay well. Finances are predictable, barring an occasional urge to binge-spend. CAPRICORN

(December 22nd–January 19th):

While you generally stay engaged in what you do all the year around, this is actually a good time to devote yourself consciously to planned brain activity, such as studying, with a goal. Take a short course as a year-end gift for yourself. A lot of physical activity will help good health. Finances will require thought, though there is no surprise here. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): Perhaps this month was designed for you, and now is a good time to know that you are in a zone where your understanding of the world is energising you to start living your improved life, wherever you currently think you are. Health will be stable. Just take additional care based on the weather. Finances will hold not much of surprises, though you will be spending more than usual. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): It will be a good idea for you to rest and relax this month, as much as you can. Even when you are in the thick of activities, hold yourself calm and detached. You are not in your game, yet, and it is all right. Health will benefit from stable, regular activities. Finances will be a little low on energy.
