Tolerance – What’s wrong with the world mama? “The ability or willingness to tolerate or accept the existence of opinions or behavior that one dislikes or disagrees with”- that’s how the dictionary defines the word ‘Tolerance’. The important part being “that one dislikes or disagrees with”. Are we a tolerant nation? Are we as humans tolerant by nature? Deep down the answer may be probably NO. But what made us human and in a way in which we defined ourselves human probably has to do with how we chose to be tolerant. Communities, civilizations, and societies were formed based on collectiveness of the people. It was the first step of Tolerance that humans must have taken. Tolerance towards another individual who most likely is different in his or her DNA and behavior. Disagreements and dislikes are bound to happen. It’s how we handle them is what defines us. Each one of us is entitled to our opinion. They could be right or wrong. It’s okay to even judge them in your individual capacity. We have always blamed ‘actions’ of individuals and nations in the smallest battle to the biggest war. I’d like to believe it’s not those actions. It’s the ‘reactions’ that lead to the unwanted and a lot of times irreversible situations. Reactions that are a result Management of intolerance. Every individual “I” has full Neeraj Vasudeva control over changing the course of things by his or her Action and equally important Reaction. Excerpts from one of my favorite songs by Black Eyed Peas that speaks better than any other words: “What’s wrong with the world, mama People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas I think the whole world addicted to the drama Only attracted to things that’ll bring you trauma
But if you only have love for your own race Then you only leave space to discriminate And to discriminate only generates hate And when you hate then you’re bound to get irate, yeah
Madness is what you demonstrate And that’s exactly how anger works and operates Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight Take control of your mind and meditate Let your soul gravitate to the love, y’all, y’all”
This is the month of Christmas. It is the time for festivities, giving and sharing. Happy times. Therefore, I would like to end this year on a happy note. On behalf of all the kids (small kids, grown up kids, old kids, uncle-aunty age kids, and senior citizen kids) here is asking Santa to come down everyone’s chimneys with the Gift of Love and Tolerance.

Habits To
Keep You
Stylish
by Priya Shah
H
ave you ever found yourself wondering - “How does that XYZ person look impeccable all the time?” “What makes them so Classy?” “What’s that thing you’ve got missing in you?” “Do brands make a person look Chic?” “What are the fashion rules that you must follow?” “Which magazine/channel/ individual can teach them to me?” If these questions leave you brooding most times, there is one thing you need to know: Some individuals are born with a great sense of STYLE but few aren’t. Heck! So what? Style is a skill like swimming, dancing or singing which can be acquired by “Anybody who wishes to acquire it.” To be very honest, I too, belong to the latter category, but who can guess so? To reach that goal one needs to religiously practice the following pointers until it becomes a habit. Once this happens, you yourself will feel stylish and notice how gradually others start noticing & following you.
8
Being “Well-Dressed” is an everyday thing Whether it’s a day at home, grocery shopping, stroll in the garden, casual Friday at work, movie with friends, family outing, brunch with colleagues or movie premier night – these individuals always look put together. Let me tell you, it requires a great amount of effort and motivation to get out of the “Ah! I’m just going to a random grocery store” mode and get into something refined. You can wander around in your pajama pants all day or do the same in a maxi dress, the decision is yours. It’s a truly consistent habit to stick to.
1
2
Outfits are planned well in advance We all know that clothes communicate! They know the importance of it. They also know mornings are “hectic” which may not be the right time to spend 20 minutes in front of a closet wondering what to wear! So every night before heading off to sleep, they go to the closet, try out new combinations, and plan clothes that suit their day’s purpose. Meetings, presentations, client meetings or

weddings, surprise party or brunch with friends, lunch with family or dinner date – their outfit including accessories, shoes, and handbag is always ready.
3
Style Inspiration is borrowed most of the times Great styling is creativity at its best. Creativity of any form is usually borrowed & maneuvered as per one’s own taste. Advertising, art, fashion, jewelry- all of these forms take inspiration from earlier works in their respective fields and alter it as per current trend and taste. For style inspiration, there are ‘n’ number of fashion and lifestyle bloggers from all over the world available on Instagram, Pinterest, Wooplr & Tumblr to learn from. Stylish Individuals do not hesitate to make use of inspiration from others – they follow people they enjoy looking at, think of their wardrobe, and incorporate it with elegance on their own self. Labels and Brands aren’t the end of the world “Clothes, only from big brands can make one look chic!” is a myth. We often see celebrities wearing branded dresses in magazines and television, which allures
us to buy them. Something most people do not know is that brands often send their stuff to celebs to flaunt and fascinate us. It is great to own a high fashion piece, but may be, not at the price you have to pay. Stylish Individuals know how to carry off Bandra accessories with a branded dress. They just know how to mix high fashion with street wear. Here’s what I do – Often my classic pieces (LBD, White formal Shirt, Linen Kurta) are from brands, while accessories, handbags, trendy pieces (neon scarf, monkey print pajama, bow dress) are from random/non-branded stores. Works out more economically!
5
Fashion Rules are meant to be broken This one’s my personal
favorite. Yves Saint Laurent, a French fashion designer born in 1930’s quoted “Fashion fades, Style is Eternal.” Fashion trends thrive from old times, but importantly back then too, people realized that fashion rules were meant to be broken and meant to be bent, and twisted into a style of our own, which is now popularly known as “personal style.” In today’s times as well, fashion magazines and different people will come up with “Fashion Rules” but I feel if we don’t modify those rules as per our personal taste & try new combinations, then what’s the fun?
6
Keep signature back up always ready! Personal Style is something that you can carry off any time of the day, week, month, or year. That’s called the signature style of an individual. There are days when we have surprise plans or no spare time to plan, on those
days these individuals always have “this signature style” ready as a backup. Be it a kurta + Palazzo, Jeans + Tee + Scarf, all whites, all blacks or a particular color in their cluster. Realize the Importance of Grooming These Individuals are stylish because they practice the above 6 habits and lastly they realize the importance of self-Grooming on an “everyday basis.” Most times self-grooming is solely related to hygiene but it’s much more than that. Food habits, water intake, haircare, skin-care, teeth care, nail-care, and body-care – they pay regular attention to each of these things, which creates an overall effect on their appearance. As a teen, I was never elegant or had a sense of style in me, honestly with time I observed other people whom I would admire & at the same time, I underwent Masters in Image Consulting, which transformed my life, and now I assist others to feel great about themselves.

OST OF YOU WILL HAVE A WORKOUT CHECKLIST, WHICH YOU WILL TRY TO STICK TO, TO LOOK AT YOUR BEST DURING THE UPCOMING XMAS EVE AND NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS. THE MOOT QUESTION IS – DO YOU HAVE A CHECKLIST FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FITNESS TOO. LET US TAKE A LOOK AT THE FINANCIAL FITNESS CHECKLIST ESSENTIALS.
Before joining a gym or beginning an exercise regimen, you have certain goals in mind. It could be muscle building, overall health improvement, etc. Likewise, you should have financial goals. Along with listing the financial goals, you should know the approximate value of these goals. Do not forget to include the impact of inflation.
2
There are different pieces of equipment, which serve different purposes, and work differently on our body; different financial goals need different approaches. The need for flexibility of the investment also needs to be kept in mind since needs and goals change and evolve. One product will not be sufficient to cover all needs. For long- term goals you can look at the New Pension Scheme, long term Bonds, long duration debt funds, and mutual funds with high allocation to equity, Public Provident Fund and real estate. As you move closer to your goal, the exposure to equity should reduce. You

can add a small allocation of gold for diversification purposes. For medium term goals hybrid Funds like Monthly Income schemes or balanced mutual funds, provide a combination of steady earnings from fixed income oriented investments with a combination of equity to boost returns. For near term goals one can look at short term, ultra-short term funds, and liquid funds.
3
Cardio has various benefits with some of them being shedding off excess fat, improved metabolism, and a healthy heart. Similarly, if you have high interest loans, unpaid credit card bills, or expensive and low return generating investment instruments in your portfolio, you should first get rid of your credit card bills, which charge a very high rate of interest. Also, if you have a high interest loan, go for a balance transfer since many banks have reduced their

base rates recently. You may even take a fresh loan at a lower rate and repay your existing high interest loan.

fitness mantra for your finances?

Whilst you like to keep a check on the amount of calories you consume, you should also keep a check on your expenses. Make a budget and try to be within that limit.
After a regular workout, you evaluate how far you have reached. In much the same way, you need to revisit your goals regularly, and review progress. Just as it is important to see what is working right for you and what is not with your exercise regimen, you need to regularly review you portfolio.

Some of the most common issues the binge brings are an uncomfortably bloated stomach, irregular motions ,flatulence, sluggishness, fatigue AND definitely a broader waistline (which calls for larger sized clothes) thus resulting in depression, mood swings and further binge eating. A well-planned detox program consciously cleanses the system and gets your body once again ready for a healthy routine in double quick time. An Instant Detox is a quick fix to getting back on your health track at super speed giving you a whole lot of benefits A clean healthy renewed system leaving you light, energetic and feeling fresh A boost of antioxidants resulting in well hydrated skin looking radiant and luminous A quick unload of toxins leaving your body slimmer and fitter A confident, active and alert you as your body shrugs off sluggishness A healthy and natural way to kick-start your healthy lifestyle once more A great motivation to get back in shape, which is far more precious than anything else. inter is just around the corner and so is the New Year. People have many questions about how to manage skin in the dry, cold weather. There is a drop in humidity, which leads to dryness of the skin. Many times one would experience itching, irritation or flaking of their skin. So how does one take care of their skin and still have that radiant glow in winter. With the change in weather, we need to change our skin care routine. Coconut oil application for body before bath works wonders in winter for dry skin conditions. Long showers with hot water are known to strip away your skin’s natural oils, so it is advisable to take a bath with warm water and stay in shower for short time. If one uses soap for bathing, use emollient soaps containing moisturising factors like glycerine or almond oil. Remember to use a body moisturising lotion immediately after you step out of your bath and also at night before sleeping.

CHOLESTEROL Is
ESSENTIAL by Dr. Lily Keswani, MD, DGO, Integrative Medicine
C
HOLESTEROL is essential, a basic raw material made by nearly every cell in the body. It is NECESSARY for: • Hormone production – oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone and stress hormones. (That is why some men on statins can develop ED.) • Bile salts to absorb and digest fats • It is a major component of cell membrane and organelles • A quarter of the total body cholesterol is in the brain. It is an important component of the myelin sheath, which coats nerve cells and nerve fibres. It is necessary for nerve cells to communicate with each other. • Low cholesterol levels are linked to poorer cognitive performance – brain fog, memory loss is often seen with statin use. • Cholesterol plays a big role in fighting infection. It functions as a powerful antioxidant in the body and protects against free radical damage to tissues.
in the British Medical Journal that you should ignore advice to reduce your saturated fat intake, because it’s actually increasing your risk for obesity and heart disease. Your body requires cholesterol to survive, which is why it produces it. A real danger as we age is that our cholesterol levels can get too low— which is only exacerbated by taking statins!
Cholesterol as a predictor of heart disease is a MYTH. In 2012, researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology concluded that women with “high cholesterol” (greater than 270 mg/dl) had a 28 percent lower mortality risk than women with “low cholesterol” (less than 183 mg/dl). In 2013, the prominent London cardiologist Seem Malhotra argued

If the cholesterol dips too low, it will increase the risk of depression, stroke, violent behaviour and suicide. Women with the highest cholesterol actually live the longest! Dr. Meyer Texon MD, a respected pathologist practicing at New York University Medical Centre, observes that accusing saturated fat and cholesterol for hardening of the arteries is like accusing white blood cells of causing infection, rather than helping the immune system address it.
Women with the highest cholesterol actually live the longest!
And all this means that we can get rid of the great cholesterol fear which has been ruling our lives and dictating our eating habits. No more egg white omelettes! Bring on the yolks! Yolks are chock-full of health giving ingredients. And no, you do not need to limit them, either. Enjoy! Caring for your Child's Teeth by Dr Ritika Arora MDS Aesthetic Smiles Dental Clinic & Facial Rejuvenation
Brushing tips for children • Use a tiny smear of toothpaste for babies and toddlers up to age three, and a pea-sized amount for children aged three to six years. • Gradually start brushing your child’s teeth more thoroughly, covering all the surfaces of the teeth. Do it at least twice a day: just before bed and at another time that fits in with your routine. • Not all children like having their teeth brushed, so you may have to keep trying. Turn it into a game, or brush your own teeth at the same time and then help your child finish their own. Perseverance is the key! • The easiest way to brush a baby’s teeth is to sit them on your knee with their head resting against your chest. With an older child, stand behind them and tilt their head upwards. • Brush the teeth in small circles covering all the surfaces and let your child spit the toothpaste out afterwards. Rinsing with water has been found to reduce the benefit of fluoride. • Supervise brushing to make sure your child gets the right amount of toothpaste and they are not eating or licking toothpaste from the tube. • Carry on helping your child brush their teeth until you are sure they can do it well enough themselves. This will normally be until they are at least seven.
Tooth decay Tooth decay, also known as dental decay or dental caries, is a major health
22
concern worldwide. Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth tissue caused by acids made by bacteria in dental plaque. Dental plaque is a sticky film that constantly forms on the teeth. Each time you have sugary food and drink; the bacteria in plaque produce acid that attacks teeth. If you eat or drink sugary foods frequently throughout the day, you have more “acid attacks” which can lead to tooth decay. This can eventually lead to cavities (holes) in the teeth and infection, which is why teeth sometimes need to be removed.
Fluoride dental treatments Fluoride varnish can be applied to both baby teeth and adult teeth by a dentist. The process involves painting a varnish containing high levels of fluoride onto the surface of the tooth every six months to prevent decay. It works by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. From the age of three, children should be offered fluoride varnish treatment at least twice a year.
Fissure Sealants The first adult teeth come through at about 6 years old. They grow behind all the baby teeth without any baby teeth being lost. These are the teeth we seal. Tackling the
Winter Hair!

Tips by the expert stylist, Elton
T
here might not have been a nip in the air yet, but winter air is doing its damage already. Almost all of us would have noticed a dry and limp feeling evading our hair gradually, making it lifeless and frizzy. Such is the malady of winter hair and most of us do not know exactly what to do with it. We at Living Local spoke to celebrity hair stylist Elton from Nalini’s Salon, Bandra, and asked him for a few quick tips to survive the season without much damage to our hair! Let us check out the tips that he had to extend! “Changing weather results in changes in our skin and hair. Just like how our skin gets dry every winter so does our hair. Hence, it is extremely important to keep hair moisturized at all times. Hydrating shampoos and conditioners work well to keep the scalp and hair well moisturized on a regular basis. A hot oil treatment for the scalp with a deep conditioning treatment spa for the hair is highly recommended once a week or every 10 days at least. This ensures sufficient moisturizing especially of the ends. It will help prevent split ends and breakage since hair becomes very brittle in winter.
Post shampoo and conditioning use a leave in product. For curly hair, a cream based leave in conditioner works well. Straight to wavy hair can be controlled with argon oil. Regular trimming is most important. Getting rid of split ends and dry ends before they start to create hair fall must be done regularly. At home once you apply conditioner, wrap your hair in a hot towel. This helps the conditioner to penetrate the hair well. Products recommended: Sebastian hydrate shampoo and conditioner for normal hair, Sebastian penetrate shampoo and conditioner for dry hair, Wella professional Smoothen shampoo and mask for normal to dry curly hair.” Hence, if you too are suffering from unmanageable winter hair, these are the tips you must keep in mind for healthy and bouncy hair! Enlivening an identity of taste
THE CUTCHI MEMON TABLE by Zeba Akhtar
I WAS INTRIGUED BY THE NAME THE CUTCHI MEMON TABLE AND WHILE ON MY WAY TO THIS CULINARY COUPLE’S BANDRA HOME, I HAD NO CLUE ABOUT THE TASTY ADVENTURE THAT I WAS ABOUT TO DELVE INTO.
M
y warm hosts Faiziya (Chef at The Cutchi Memon Table) and her husband Arshad Soomar (marketing force behind the venture) greeted me with a warm smile. While I was seated on the table, I could hear as well as smell the potluck of flavors that were melting away in the kitchen, and the foodie in me was definitely excited. From our initial exchange of conversation, I was extremely intrigued by the name ‘The Cutchi Memon Table’ and after a few words I could not help but ask what exactly did the name mean and how did it come about. To this, Arshad explained to me about a community called ‘Cutchi Memon’ that reside within the villages of Kutch in Gujarat. Both Faiziya and Arshad belong to the same community even though they grew up in Bangalore and Mumbai respectively. But when the two of them ended up getting married, the zeal for the homely flavors and ancestral tastes were rekindled within Faiziya, and once her children grew up, she decided to make her close friends be acquainted with the flavors that were so

dear to her. Such was the birth of The Cutchi Memon Table and since then there has been no looking back.
The Cutchi Memon Muslims take immense pride in their food and their forte is a variety of non- vegetarian dishes emitting unique aromas and crafted over a significant amount of time.
“Each of my recipe is unique and has a personality of its own. Cooking is my passion and I do not believe in compromising on quality, which is why each time I prepare a meal, I make sure that I procure all of my ingredients in person and not a single item is replaceable. As the orders started flowing in, many of my friends suggested that we open a restaurant or expand in scale, but I do not wish to indulge in the
same. I cook every dish exclusively and I do not think someone else will be able to replicate it the same way. This is one of the reasons why we have a maximum limit on the orders that we take in,” explains Faiziya as she talks about her vision for The Cutchi Memon Table. The table for me was set with appetizers that included Mutton Shaami Kebabs, Mutton Samosas, Chicken Baida Roti, Raan Masala, and Chicken Tikka Biryani along with Sheer Khorma and Khubaani ka Meetha for desserts. Despite having eaten at multiple places, the food struck me as extra ordinary. It was a mix of rich flavors and aroma, but retained a homely feel. Upon further conversation, I was enlightened that the
meat was marinated twenty-four hours in advanced and the mutton was slow cooked on the stove to attain the right texture and feel. Currently in its second year of inception, The Cutchi Memon Table believes in taking baby steps. “Our goal is centered on quality rather than quantity and we want to be known for the same. We have done multiple party orders and a pop up so far, and are currently satisfied with the pace. What matters the most is the amazing and generous feedback which we receive every time, recalls Arshad, as he reinstates his wife’s vision.
rare to see a venture that is still geared towards preserving and propagating taste from its roots rather than plainly following business strategy!

Ushering in the Organic Era: Kavita Mukhi Farmer’s Market by Zeba Akhtar
FOR THE PAST SEVEN SEASONS, THE HOOD OF BANDRA HAS BEEN BASKING IN THE GLORY OF ALL THINGS ORGANIC, AND FOR THAT, WE HAVE ONE WOMAN TO THANK. MEET KAVITA MUKHI, A JOURNALIST TURNED NUTRITIONIST AND A SUCCESSFUL CRANIOSACRAL THERAPIST WHO HAD THE URGE AND TENACITY TO BRING IN THE FARMER’S MARKET, WHICH TAKES PLACE MOST SUNDAYS AT BHALLA HOUSE IN BANDRA WEST.
W
e caught up with Kavita with an urge to know more about her journey and how she undertook the whole task of such a massive event. A journalist by profession, she took up the idea of nutrition initially under a personal impulse. A young mother, she was continuously bombarded by different opinions and ideas regarding the usage of natural products after the birth of her son. Hence, she decided to study it all herself. Thus began the process of studying nutrition. However, that too was not enough for
her, and she decided to extend the limitations of nutrition by training to become a craniosacral therapist. Since then, she has been using her skills to help people heal naturally. The decision to bring in the Farmer’s Market was one based on a lot of thought and demand. In 1990, she began Conscious Foods, which was a little health store, and stacked mostly dry organic products. With time, the demand for fresh produce grew, and thus in 2010, the Farmer’s Market came about. It took Kavita a long time to process and implement the idea due to lack of a space large enough to host the market, as parks would not designate their Sundays to the market. “The main motivation is to see Indian farming wisdom, culture, tradition, & heritage be conserved by ensuring that the farmer is a happy man and that his children want to remain in the business. The health of the soil is important too. Our health is only a side benefit.” That apart, Kavita also believes that it is important that agriculture, or rather traditional agriculture is preserved, else we would all fade away into the trap of genetically modified or artificially

grown products. The Farmer’s Market is an attempt to rekindle the spirit of farming, create awareness about the benefits of fresh products, and reduce over reliance on packaged food. With these ideals in mind, she keeps her kitchen completely organic but does not mind eating out at invitations or restaurants. Despite echoing so many different roles and gaining equivalent success at them, Kavita still wishes that she had more time for her family where she could stay back at home and spend quality time taking care of her loved ones. Such is the capacity of multi-tasking when it comes to this phenomenal woman! To connect with her you can log on to: www.kavitamukhi.com www.farmersmarket.co.in

fter creating a buzz amongst Mumbaikars in Colaba, Lower Parel and Todi Mills, Social Offline finally reaches the suburbs in the form of Khar Social situated just off S.V Road in Khar West! Keeping up with the usual vibe of its other outlets, Khar Social goes a step ahead and boasts of not only a twostoried outlet, but also an indoor skate park, which has been grabbing major eyeballs. I stepped into this newly opened outlet right before the peak evening time, and within minutes, the entire place was brimming with crowd, with people waiting in queue for tables by 7 pm! The theme of this new place is ‘under construction’ and literally everything in the restaurant keeps up to the theme. From lampshades made out of recycled tin cans, to tables made out of old doors, and bamboos tied one after the other to add to a rugged under construction vibe, the décor is one of a kind. The place keeps up to its name of being one of the coolest outlets for co working and has old hanging phone systems in the form of charging points. The colorful skate park is contrasted with the grunge interiors in shades of tan, and chocolate with a good wooden finish. That apart, the outlet has numerous nooks and corners, especially the smoking zone that is lined with a good number of potted plants that add a different appeal to the place. As is the trend, the menu never fails to disappoint and is almost similar to the menu at the other outlets. We tried the Cosmo Explosion and Old Smoke. The candyfloss was a good twist to the cocktail. For appetizers, the everfriendly crew at Social suggested Gun
Powder Calamari and South hall Fish and Chips. What sets Social apart is the upbeat, power packed presentation, and this time as well it did not disappoint. Calamari was packed in a paper bag to be mixed with the special gunpowder seasoning and the chips were seasoned with a zing of Indian flavors as well. Social and its burgers never disappoint which is why I ended up ordering the Southern Fried Chicken Burger, along with a Chicken Sizzler, which came with huge portions of chicken and rice. Both the dishes were true to their names when it came to taste as well as presentation. And the amazing course was wrapped up with the ‘Chocolate Blood Bath’ a delectable dessert with chocolate cake, chocolate brownie, chocolate fudge, nuts, and ice cream topped with chocolate sauce. Sure to be a delight for anyone with a sweet tooth! To sum it up, Khar Social is the next social to watch out for, especially with different seating areas, it has something to offer to everyone. However, we would have loved a little more lighting (for all those selfies and birthday shots) and maybe a different menu! But one cannot complain much because the crew and the current menu are kept at top standards leaving you with a great experience and a major smile, always!

WHAT COULD YOU BE DOING THIS CHRISTMAS Since the city gets barely cold even on Christmas, we better be giving up on ideas of a white Christmas! However, we still have many activities that you could indulge in with your loved ones during the festive season! • Re-do your room in a Christmas theme. What you need it lots of fairy lights, a couple of red and green upholstery. It could be something as simple as putting up red curtains and lining them with lights. Go ahead, give it a try! • Bake a cake! Yes! Nothing says Christmas like a freshly baked plum cake. The internet is filled with different recipes for plum cakes, so go ahead and bake a fresh one for your family! • Get an eco-friendly Christmas tree home, call in your gang, and begin a full-fledged Christmas tree decoration. Bells, stars, lights and a little bit of confetti. Nothing beats such good times. • Volunteer as Santa! Yes, find out about a local orphanage or an old age home, gang up and raise minor funds and surprise these kids and old people with a few gifts and games. Nothing speaks of Christmas as much as the joy of giving. • Attend a midnight mass! Yes, especially if you can manage to go all the way up to Mount Mary Church in Bandra! Yes, this shall definitely be a one in a lifetime experience. • Have a potluck lunch! Pool in with your friends, cousins, or gym group and organize a potluck lunch. Experiment with Christmas staples such as Turkey roast, stuffing, yams and pumpkin roast along with some good wine and cake! Do not forget to take pictures. • If you happen to be a partygoer, then most clubs in each hood have something or the other Christmas special going on. So call up your besties, because it is time to stomp the dance floor and have fun!
Most of us are usually so lazy that we keep our entire gift shopping until the last minute and eventually end up with hurriedly bought overpriced gifts. This Christmas season, plan your gifts in advance and make your loved ones feel special and cared for! Here are a few ideas, which you could use when gifting your close people.
www.shutterstock.com/ Evgeny Atamanenko
• Chuck the easy way out. While clothes make for useful gifts, they may not be the most thoughtful ones. • Make sure that while choosing a gift, you keep in mind the personality of a person. • For someone who loves to read, a special edition of a book may be a good idea. Alternatively, custom made diaries and notebooks can be bought for people who love to write or doodle. • Foodies can be gifted with gourmet cheese boxes or flavored chocolates. Good quality wine paired with the best type of cheese may also be a good idea. • If you happen to be good at art, then nothing speaks of a good gift than something made with hands. Draw/ sketch/paint on a canvas, and you could turn it to some great wall art, which will definitely be appreciated. Choose a moment, symbol, or memory, which is close to the two of you. • Gifting an experience can be a different joy altogether! Hence, taking a couple of closed ones out on a picnic, dinner, or a good movie followed by some hearty conversation can also be a great gift. Because after all, one of the best gifts you can give people, is time.

GIFTING IDEAS FOR CHRISTMAS!
CHRISTMAS FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! We all know that Christmas is a big thing, but in some parts of the world, it is even bigger than what we would like to think! We bring to you some of the craziest Christmas Trivia from all over the world! • Over 30 to 35 million Christmas trees are sold in the U.S alone, every year! • Christmas trees are edible. Yes! You could easily eat many parts of a pine tree and pine nuts and cones are especially good for health. • Santa Claus comes from a Dutch folk tale based on Saint Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, who gave gifts on December 6. • Rudolph the reindeer was actually invented for a popular American film in 1938. • IN the Czech Republic, they enjoy dinners of fish soup, eggs, and carp. The number of people at the table must be even, or the one without a partner will die next year. • Christmas purchases account for 1/6 of all retail sales in the U.S. • Christmas Eve in Japan is a good day to eat fried chicken and strawberry shortcake. • “Hot cockles” was a popular game at Christmas in medieval times. It was a game in which the other players took turns striking the blindfolded player, who had to guess the name of the person delivering each blow. “Hot cockles” was still a Christmas pastime until the Victorian era. • In 1647, the English parliament passed a law that made Christmas illegal. Festivities were banned by Puritan leader, Oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry, on what was supposed to be a holy day, to be immoral. The ban was lifted only when the Puritans lost power in 1660. Aren’t these amazing? If you happen to know of any special tradition then don’t forget to share it with us!

Angel Xpress Foundation by Zeba Akhtar
A
n Economics graduate, and a successful professional, she has commanded considerable amount of success in high level financial positions in firms such as Kotak Securities, Edelweiss, and Reliance Money. However, for Anubha Sharma, this was never enough. After a 20 yearlong career, she still craved for more, and found this in her venture; Angel Xpress foundation. What stands today as a successful and renowned foundation for the underprivileged, was born out of pure impulse and the desire to make a difference. Struck by the belief that intervention could be fruitful in changing destinies, Anubha always had a dormant desire to move towards the path of intervention but did not know how or when. It was when she went out with a friend who had taken 35 odd under privileged children to McDonald’s for a treat, that this dormant desire took an active form and Angel Xpress came about. Initially it was restricted to just a few

activities and gatherings for donation of clothes etc. that usually was mobilized via Facebook updates and statuses, but gradually it took concrete form.
who will pledge to help kids from underprivileged backgrounds with their academics, not only as teachers, but also as able guides and mentors for life.
Today, Angel Xpress runs numerous programs, each one directed at a specific issue, following a specially carved out path.
With this in mind, the foundation currently runs two main programs. AFX learning centers are core programs aimed at bringing in mentors to help children from these backgrounds with schoolwork. It currently has around seven centers in shaded corners of major parks. The second program is called the In-School English program, which stations AFX sponsored teachers in vernacular medium schools so that children in such schools are not deprived when it comes to learning the English language.
It’s the love I get from the children every time I walk into a center that keeps me going “Angel Xpress is built around a vision to provide keen donors and volunteers with an authentic platform to directly extend their philanthropic support to the society; thereby bridging the gap between the donors and the deprived,” says Anubha who used her experience and finances to set it up. Angel Xpress claims to bridge the gap of quality education by bringing in committed and dedicated adults

Volunteers from all walks of life come in to become mentors. Some are ex teachers, some are currently in college, while others are young mothers who see the value of quality education and hence would like to extend their learning further. Anubha embarked on this new journey together with one of the callers, a businessperson called Beenaa Advani, who also decided to abandon her

commercial pursuits for this cause. “It’s the love I get from the children every time I walk into a center that keeps me going,” says Co-Founder Beenaa. In running AXF, besides a small team of employees, Anubha and Beenaa are supported by a core group of volunteers who have taken on the responsibility of furthering the cause in numerous ways. From managing centers, taking charge of generating curriculum & assessment papers, managing volunteer relationships, to fund raising, to helping with creative content and website management, many tasks at AXF are performed by dedicated volunteers. Support from communities like the Bandra bandstand Resident’s trust has been key to the success of the Angel Xpress Philosophy
AXF now seeks to provide an opportunity to schoolchildren from the more privileged backgrounds to become “buddies” of their less privileged peers. The seventh AXF center has been hosted by Billabong Malad as an opportunity for the parents as well as senior students to give back to the community. Impacting more than 2000 children alone, Anubha and Beena have proven that the pursuit for spreading education is a real issue, which needs to be addressed promptly and with as much zeal as we use for our other passions in life!

here is a strong belief amongst avid and serious music listeners that it is hard to beat the experience of listening to live jazz. It can be, in the right circumstances a most intimate experience where the musicians are playing for us alone! Since jazz music consists largely of improvisation, the spur of the moment expression is unique. We in Bandra have been most fortunate in having the kind of community and environment which has nurtured jazz music in its midst. Jazz has been around in Mumbai since the mid-1930s. Bandra has been home to a vast number of jazz musicians over the years. Some of the finest Indian jazz artists have made Bandra their home. Thus Louis Banks, Pam Crain, Braz Gonsalves, Johnny Fernandes, Sonia Saigal, Benny Soans, D.Wood , Merlin D’Souza, Rhys Sebastian, Rajeev Raja ,among others have all resided in Bandra at some time or other. Live jazz is now introduced at Olive Bar & kitchen by its proprietor, A.D.Singh as a regular feature and boasts of a different band each Wednesday. It seems to have been a popular and welcome move and has filled a void in the area of live jazz programming. Jazz enthusiasts await these Wednesday sessions eagerly. Earlier, Soul Fry at Pali Market featured jazz bands on a regular basis for several years but its proprietor, Meldan D’Cunha had to yield to the escalated taxes on live entertainment. We all hope for a revival of jazz nights at this venue. Also featuring live jazz some time ago was the restaurant Pulse on Hill Road. Many memorable sessions at both Soul Fry and Pulse are now distant memories. Another interesting venue in Bandra is Bandra Base off Waterfield Road where periodic jazz sessions are held these days. These are organized by D.Wood, an accomplished guitar and bass player. There are some exciting memories of international musicians passing through Mumbai playing at jazz venues in Bandra. A few years ago, Sri Lanka’s great jazz pianist Harsha Makalande had played at a Jazz Utsav Festival in Mumbai and strolled into Soul Fry one jazz night to sit in with the house band. Similarly, American sax and keyboard player Talafaral has also played at the same venue. Carl Clements, another American saxophone player has made surprise (very pleasant ones!) at venues in Bandra. In August 2015, yet another American alto sax player, Greg Banaszak, who was in Mumbai for a concert at the NCPA dropped in at Olive restaurant and had a breathtaking session. Never having even met the musicians who were playing that night, Banaszak fit into the band as if they had been rehearsing together for years! One memorable piece he played with just the drummer, a Benny Soans as accompaniment, the up-tempo Donna Lee still rings in ones ears! That is the magic of live jazz! This year, Celebrate Bandra also features live jazz at the Bandra Fort amphitheater. This venue has also been home to a couple of Jazz Utsav festivals some years ago. Of course, the Blues and Jazz are kissing cousins. The Mahindra Blues Festival at Mehboob Studios every year in February is a landmark event in most music calendars in Mumbai. Live jazz is alive and well and must be supported and sustained by us, the audiences! Be there.

Tough Times. We all experience some of the worst moments in life. When we lose someone, when someone hurts us. Like these, there are many other circumstances in life. We become weak, feel terrible, and are heartbroken. However, we have to sometimes live with such moments, life is not a fairy tale as shown in the movies where everything becomes perfectly fine, and the Hero gets the Heroine and has the perfect ending. In reality, we need to be our own Hero and it is in our hands to make our life a fairy tale and give a good if not a perfect ending to even the worst situations in life. Here are some quotes, which might make you feel good and strong about your soul: Sometime life sucks. Sometimes life gets so hard that you do not want to be put through it anymore. Sometimes life is so stressful and all you want to do is to cry. Still sometimes life is beautiful. Sometimes life is happy. And all you want to do is smile. Sometimes you just have to stay positive and push through all of the hard times. Why? Because life is worth it. You are worth it. - Unknown When people make you feel unwanted, don’t leave to make them feel sad or guilty, they won’t. Leave because you no longer have a reason to stay. Sometimes you have to be strong for yourself. What’s meant to be will end up good and what’s not- won’t. Love is worth fighting but sometimes you can’t be the only one fighting. At times, people need to fight for you. If they won’t, you just have to move on and realize what you gave them was more than they were willing to give you and more than they deserve. - Unknown What’s difficult in life is to stay centered when somebody does or says something that tempts us to close our hearts because their heart was closed. That is hard. But that is also how we grow. We go through those circumstances in order to evolve into people who can hold to our loving center no matter what the world throws at us. -Marianne Williamson

Making Art Shine
Umangee, Aswathi & Eshaa
T
hey are young, they are fun, and they are quirky! They are bubbling with ideas, and inspiration. Meet three dynamic women, Umangee, Aswathi, and Eshaa, each from a different background, tied by the bond of creativity. Living Local had a chance to chat with the young entrepreneurs who are creating major waves with their fun notebooks, which are one of a kind!
1. Since when has this concept been on your mind? You could say that we thought of this idea overnight! However, we had been thinking of doing something for a while. The team (Umangee, Aswathi and Eshaa) are all working full-time, but all of us being artistic and creative in our own ways, wanted to do something in addition to our 9-5 jobs. We sat down and thought about how to do something different from what we have seen. 2. Why the name, “The Bright Log”? ‘Log’ in Hindi means people. We are the ‘Bright people with bright ideas’. In addition, we have used a log to show that this is where paper comes from. Making books involves the chopping down of trees. This is why we are trying to do our bit by using paper scraps for our custom notebooks. These scraps are sourced from art/ architecture colleges

and the books are made using those papers. Hence reducing and recycling the paper waste. In the future, we do plan to launch more eco-friendly initiatives.
popular in India when we launched. It was fairly new. So we thought why not do doodling!
3. How many partners are you? How did this collaboration come about?
Because they are beautiful and they can be in any form or design – from geometric patterns to flowers to birds and human figures! We use all of these for our designs! We also use a lot of line work and stippling with these doodles to give it a contemporary touch!
We are a team of three. Eshaa B Valambhia – She is the artist who gives life to our concepts and ideas. The youngest in the team and a selftaught artist, illustrator, and graphic designer. Aswathi Nair – She is the one who comes up with whacky ideas, witty one-liners, and handles the social media for TBL. She is the one who named our company as well. Umangee B – Pure sales and marketing person – handles the finances and collaborations, exhibitions, deals and orders. An artist on the side, if time permits. 4. Doodle is a very new concept in India. How easy or difficult was it for you to get the concept of doodle related art across? Eshaa is also a nail art and henna artist. She sits and makes new designs every day, or keeps filling her sketchbooks with various doodles. Therefore, when we decided to start a company, we were sure that we wanted something different. We wanted to get world art to India and make Indian henna art famous in the world. Doodling is a very popular form of art worldwide. However, it was not too

5. Why the use of henna doodles?
‘Log’ in Hindi means people. We are the Bright people with bright ideas
6. Tell us a little about how do you undertake customization. We specialize in creating custom notebooks. We get a detailed brief from the client (it could be something that he/ she has thought of, or seen somewhere, just about anything). It could be as weird as a unicorn wearing a stethoscope and painting a Vincent van Gogh replica while listening to Metallica. Every notebook is unique. There are no two same books. That’s the best part.
7. How easy/difficult is to operate without a store? How do you go about when it comes to sourcing clients? It is always better to have a store, but we are a start-up and do not have funding or investment to buy property. We have a Facebook and Instagram page through which we get orders and word of mouth is a great medium. In fact, we think it is easier to operate from home, as there are no overheads. And since all of us are working, we cannot give full-time attention to a store. 8. As women entrepreneurs, what does this journey look like? The journey has been awesome, like any other mission that brings a sense of achievement. With every order, we learn something new. With every order, we see happy and satisfied customers! We love to see the expressions on their faces when we hand them over the book. 9. How has the response been like? What are the most preferred items? The response has been fantastic. Every exhibition has given us great recognition. The most preferred items are the custom notebooks. Once these notebooks are filled, the cover can be framed and made into a nice artwork to hang on your walls. 10. What are your plans for the coming future? Is there a store in mind? Any collaborations? We do want to take budding artists
on board and offer them a platform to showcase their talent. Also we want to collaborate with a few local artists and bring forgotten art to the world. We also are also looking out for a non-profit organization to tie-up with. 11. Express your thoughts on the following slogan: ‘You might be travelling global, but you’re always living local”! That’s exactly what we believe in. We want people to carry our products and take it with them wherever they go. This according to us is the best kind of exposure. We have had people taking our notebooks for meetings, which has translated into more business for us. So go travel the world, but do carry our products with you. You can find this amazing store on Facebook as ‘The Bright Log’!
Doodling is a very popular form of art worldwide. However, it was not too popular in India when we launched. It was fairly new. So we thought why not do doodling!

AUTHENTIC MEXICAN CUISINE ARRIVES AT BANDRA
UBA TUBA by Zeba Akhtar
T
he hood of Bandra is all set to get a taste of authentic Mexican Cuisine once again. Set in the quaint part of Bandra Reclamation, Uba Tuba is the new Mexican joint that you should look out for. A joint venture of two partners, Kashif and Mitesh, Uba Tuba is an amalgamation of two very different elements. Uba: Loves nature, farming, and everything natural, never had a canned juice in his life. Prefers everything fresh and organic salads, breads, and juices to towels, water, and even clothes. Loves keeping traditional food as it is and works hard to keep the taste consistent. Tuba: Loves the beach, the sand, and the parties, is bright, energetic, and the more talkative of the two, a party starter who loves travelling and has his own take on all kinds of food. Uba Tuba thus caters to two extreme taste buds and tries to bring it together. What sets Uba Tuba apart claimed the owners is that all of the products are fresh and locally sourced along with the portions being right up to Mexican standards. Mexican food is generally filling and that is exactly what these young restaurant owners want to bring in with their half a kilo burrito and totas along with bbq mutton and adobo sauce.
40
Uba Tuba is however, not a one off decision. “We took over six months to conceptualize the idea, did multiple food trials , found local suppliers for all 100+ ingredients that will be used” explained Kashif who is an MBA graduate from NMIMS and has worked at CISCO before getting his hands into the restaurant business. Mitesh on the other hand has lived in London for the past 10 years and like a true foodie, he has tried all the gourmet food that London has to offer. Quick, hearty and filling: These three elements were in their minds when they decided to formulate the menu for Uba Tuba. Since the space is not very big, they decided on an open kitchen and the décor is a contrast of dark walls contrasted with neon furniture to add a colorful yet subtle vibe. Foodies get to choose their own salad and add their favorite elements as per their taste. Even juices have the provision for the same. Signature dishes so far include the Pibble Chicken and Adobo Mushrooms, and a host of make it yourself salads! Opening doors by the end of November, the twist offered by Uba Tuba definitely deserves a try!

Chronicles of the Hood
B
CHURCH OF
uilt in 1575 by the Portuguese, the Church of St. Andrew happens to be one of the oldest churches in the hood of Bandra.
ST. ANDREW
This beautiful architectural wonder has stood a long test of time and has eventually emerged victorious. Ever since its inception, it has withstood major calamities. The church had to bear the atrocities of the terrible cyclone of 1618. After that, it was invaded upon by the Marathas towards the end of the Mughal rule during the year 1739.
by Zeba Akhtar
After this, the Church underwent a couple of repairs in the year 1764 and thereafter. The Church stands for a symbol of the advent of Christianity in the hood of Bandra and because of its heritage attracts devout people from all over. The altar of the church is pretty high and reaches as far as the ceiling. It houses a statue of Sacred Heart, Our Lady, and St. Andrew. Later on smaller statues of St. John The Baptist, St. Sebastian and Bom Jesu were also put up. This lofty church also houses a mini museum in the midst of its choir loft. The front faรงade of the building has a small hole or rather an aperture. It was created with the intent of letting in sunlight from the rising sun into the Church.
The compound of the Church also houses one of the largest and the oldest crosses in the whole of Mumbai and is a heritage in itself. With a vision to build communities over a period of the past 400 years, the Church also holds an annual fair called the Adrean Fair. This year the fair took place on the 27th, 28th and 29th of November. The Church is currently celebrating its 400th year, which begins with a solemnistic Eucharistic rally on the 22nd of November, the Feast of Christ The King. The fair is a celebrated event and receives major footfalls mostly from Bandra hooders. To be a part of the solemn and pure experience of the Church you can visit one of the masses. The Sunday masses at the Church of St. Andrew deserve a special mention.

TAROTSCOPE
YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2015
THE YEAR AHEAD FOR SAGITTARIUS Happy Birth Anniversary! The particular problem that has been bothering you with a seeming lack of resolution will now move towards an unexpected but blessed completion. You will enjoy good health, if you are conscientious about self-care. Finances will be more or less stable. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Events will incite you to take action, but it would now be more beneficial to have second thoughts before you charge ahead. Health will benefit from cardio-vascular activities. Monetarily, you are mostly stable.
TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): You might feel a minor sense of frustration this month, but it will benefit you to use that energy instead to plan for the kind of holiday you enjoy. Keep yourself safe from congestions and pain. Finances will remain much as planned.
GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): A pretty active month lies ahead, and you will feel good about it, too. Also, a good month to experiment. Health will be good. It would be a worthy idea to keep away from financial experiments, unless it is part of your job.
CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): Ideally, you should start winding down your year and planning a vacation. You might be distracted from doing so, but bring yourself back gently into it, much like meditation. Yoga and time-out will benefit your health. Finances will remain the way they have been over the last quarter.
44
LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): While you will appreciate what is going on around you, and may even be entertained, it is possibly not your game, so stepping back is a good idea. Engage in calming activities for good health. Finances are much the same, unless you are planning a lavish holiday. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): This is a good time for you to step back, perhaps ease up your regular schedule as best as you can and focus on learning a few new things that interest you. Take a relaxing holiday. Health will benefit from taking generous care. Finances are much as usual. LIBRA
(September 23rd-October 22nd):
This is a very good month for you to set your own brand of ideas into motion. Stay alert that some of your input is influenced by other great thinkers, in case you need to course-correct. Health will benefit from any activity that calms you. Expenses mount, so channel spending into what you deem worthy.

SCORPIO
(October 23rd November 22nd):
This month will cause you to appreciate much of what is sensible around you. Know that you may not always feel like engaging in everything, and that is all right. Protect your health against sluggishness and over-activity, both are equally detrimental. Finances will be predictably earned, spent and saved. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):
Though this month is rather active, most of it is fodder for your brain. It would be good to rock back on your heels and watch the world go by, even if you don’t actually take a holiday. Health needs a good amount of activity to stay well. Finances are predictable, barring an occasional urge to binge-spend. CAPRICORN
(December 22nd–January 19th):
While you generally stay engaged in what you do all the year around, this is actually a good time to devote yourself consciously to planned brain activity, such as studying, with a goal. Take a short course as a year-end gift for yourself. A lot of physical activity will help good health. Finances will require thought, though there is no surprise here. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): Perhaps this month was designed for you, and now is a good time to know that you are in a zone where your understanding of the world is energising you to start living your improved life, wherever you currently think you are. Health will be stable. Just take additional care based on the weather. Finances will hold not much of surprises, though you will be spending more than usual. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): It will be a good idea for you to rest and relax this month, as much as you can. Even when you are in the thick of activities, hold yourself calm and detached. You are not in your game, yet, and it is all right. Health will benefit from stable, regular activities. Finances will be a little low on energy.
