Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
“Architecture is not about space but about time”, said a quote I read recently. The grand (CST) Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) stands as testimony to this. It is the only operational World Heritage station building. And after the Taj Mahal, it is one of the most photographed buildings in India.

EDITOR’S NOTE
Why vote for BMC elections this year?
W
e live in a very vocal society today with a plethora of channels for our voice to reach other people. We are more aware of our surroundings than we ever were. It takes a click of our camera-phone to capture what’s missing, what’s bothering or what needs attention. All in the name of better surrounding, better infrastructure and better civic amenities. So here’s a chance this February for all us Mumbaites to do what actually counts. Vote! The BMC elections are around the corner and so is the fate of your neighborhoods. Complaining is passé. We have the control over deciding the fate of who takes charge to serve our neighborhoods for the next 5 years. We’ve had a very low turnout (less than 50%) over the past few elections. That means every other person had chosen not to vote. That’s not the sign of a well-informed society. So let’s change that this 21st of February. Let’s go out and vote the candidate that best seems fit for the post of serving our Ward/ our neighborhoods. Do a little research on them, gauge their promises, question their motives and then make a well-educated vote. Our duties don’t start or stop at complaining the lack of something. Our duty starts with exercising our right to vote the candidate best suitable for our neighborhoods and then continuing along with them to make it a place worth living.

photographed buildings in India. Its construction started in 1878 and took almost ten years to complete. At the time this monumental terminus was the largest building erected in Asia. Designed by Frederick William Stevens with influences from victorian italianate gothic revival architecture and adapting the colour and complexity of mughal and hindu architecture. It’s skyline, turrets and pointed arches being closest in
appearance to the traditional Indian palace architecture. This magnificent building is a must visit for everyone. The entrance gates to CST are crowned with a lion (representing the United Kingdom) on one side and a tiger (representing India) on the other. This station was built to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria (fiftieth anniversary of her accession on June 20,1837). It was originally planned as the office of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR). Currently it serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. If one is in or around CST a visit to its heritage gallery is highly recommended. It gives you an insight into the history of railways in India and the history of this great city.

An inside view into the monument through which n number of commuters and long distance passengers have passed through over one hundred and twenty eight years. The tour of the heritage gallery starts with the museum on the ground floor. It consists of miniature models of the trains and engines and their evolution from steam engines to diesel engines to electric engines. Paintings, pictures, official hand written letters in gorgeous cursive writing, stamps, badges, plates, belts. There is also a beautiful miniature model of the terminus. You are sure to get a sniff of the whiff of that era. From there you will proceed to the ground floor area right beneath

the central dome. The construction of the interior of the dome is entirely open and exposed to view from the ground floor. You ascend the grand cantilevered staircase that loftily skirts the walls with eight and a half feet wide overhanging slabs of blue stone. On the first floor is the Star Chamber painted in a shade of azure with gold stars, which overlooks the CST bookinvg office on the ground floor. From there you proceed to the second floor. Look up and you will observe how the upper corners of the square of the dome ingeniously transition into an octagonal base of the dome. Between each of the eight ribs of the dome are long, stained glass windows decorated with the GIPR monogram, and arms and

foliage. The use of different coloured stones creates a striking impact. From there you proceed to the deluxe dining hall on the ground floor. The crowning point of the whole building is a colossal sixteen feet high figure of the ‘lady of progress’, which stands atop the central main dome. She holds a flaming torch upwards in her right hand, and a spoked wheel low in the left hand. Our tour guide told us that the ‘flaming torch’ indicates that ‘this city never sleeps’. And the ‘spoked wheel’ indicates ‘progress’. Both hold true for our beloved beautiful city. Which reminds me of another great quote, “Whatever good things we build, end up building us”.

L
et’s learn the truth about weight loss & how it continues to confuse intelligent India.
I WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT. In 20 yrs of my practice, the most common demand I receive is “ I want to lose weight” , whether the person has constipation, fatty liver, high cholesterol, acidity or the so called recently manifested Food Allergies, all have only one single goal “I want to lose weight”. What I inculcate in my practice is going a step further. First, the need is to identify the core issue, most often this excess weight is associated with bloated belly, indigestion, hormonal imbalance, deficiency of vitamins, erratic & improper stressful lifestyle thus leading to multiple issues such as migraines, frequent headaches, hairfall, pigmentation, brittle nails, lack of stamina and so on. If not treated correctly, this weight loss comes back with a bang! Hence, we need to focus on results that are lasting. Eliminate the root cause of your problem, solve the core issue of this excess weight & discomfort you are facing. Choose good health first, weight loss will follow naturally. I AM SO BLOATED..I DESPERATELY NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT. So when I tell my clients, “My first goal for you is to cure your acidity, kill the bloat & bring back the missing balance in your body”, most often I face raised eyebrows as if they are asking me “ But won’t I lose weight?” The message here is, each one of us has the same goal, we all want to gain health but we mislead our mind into believing that my cure is weight loss. True! losing weight is the answer for every overweight person but this weight loss is a by-product of our health correction. When the body is in a balance so will be our weight, inches, hair, skin, nails and everything else.
Tripti Gupta has also been the Official Nutrition Expert for Femina Miss India 2016 She consults from 3 centres in Mumbai Andheri, Bandra, Chowpatty as well as Offers Online Consulting.
I WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT BUT I AM ALLERGIC TO SO MANY FOODS. Another belief which most people live with today is that they are Intolerant or allergic to those very foods, they were raised eating?. However, most cases have proved that a correction in your intestinal flora can reverse this. When all those people who made claims about being lactose & gluten intolerant or even allergic to fruits, can comfortably eat the same foods today, proves that these allergies were simply temporary intestinal malabsorption cases. You need a very good reason to ban certain natural foods from your diet for your whole life. Mostly allergies are those which you are born with, what suddenly developed are only due to imbalances created from your lifestyle. MY SKIN SAGS WHEN I LOSE WEIGHT. So when food can cure your stomach, make you lose weight, correct your medical conditions & the recently developed intolerances then how can it give you Sagging Skin? Most people come with this preconceived notion that when we lose weight, our skin becomes loose & sags. Again this happens with incorrect amateur weight loss methods. Here they go- “ I followed my best friends diet!” “I followed the latest diet trend Celebrities follow” , “I googled the diet plan online” “ I used to workout like a dog” … so on. So now every health professional has to deal with this question for no fault of theirs. Sagging skin occurs due to muscle wasting, which happens to aged or malnourished people. When you say you want to lose weight , you are actually trying to say that “I want to lose FAT”. Nobody wants to lose healthy muscle, hence it’s extremely important for every individual to have a detailed Body Composition Analysis done at their every visit to their Dietician. Monitor your weight loss smartly, understand your report and ensure your weight loss is in the form of fat loss and not muscle.
She has introduced India’s First Smart Alert Diet Plans which synchronise your eating schedule with your Dietician, from anywhere in the world, simply through your phone, thus keeping you directly in touch & motivated at all times.
A drop in kgs makes everyone smile but the weight will stay off for longer if you lose it correctly. Above all, you can never get sagging skin with Fat Loss, that happens with only Muscle Loss. I GET EXCESS HAIRFALL WHEN I LOSE WEIGHT. Now this is the most common statement I bet every Dietician has faced. Whenever I lose weight I get hair fall. Hair loss comes with malnourishment, deficiencies, hormonal & fat imbalances etc so my question is, when you are consuming the right nutrition how can you lose hair? Fat people lose hair too! Just like you can get your stamina back with a great waistline, you can not only stop hair fall but instead get healthier hair, clear skin, strong nails. So what’s next, you have obviously ignored health under the pressure of weight loss. HOW CAN I LOSE WEIGHT THE HEALTHY WAY? My message is to follow a diet tailored to your needs, do not listen to anyone but your body. It is your best judge. Take advise from qualified & experienced Nutritionists & Health Professionals who would be able to guide you correctly through your disorders. Make your goal good health without pressurising your consultant for mere weight loss.Health is a 360 degree approach, everything from head to toe in our body is natural & there is always a natural remedy for every natural condition. Do not allow things to go out of hand, eat natural, listen to your body and give your health the priority it truly deserves, after all you have to make your one & only body last you a lifetime. Let’s keep it happy, healthy & in the pink of health always, Stay iPink ! As Tripti says, “Food is Magic” . “No matter what the age or condition is, natural Nutrition has a cure to everything, one simply should be able to use it’s power correctly.”

EXPERTSPEAK Well known celebrity cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Sharmila Nayak, known for her anti-aging skills and expertise in skin care in India, answers some frequently asked questions
1. Hi. I am 34 years old I have scars on cheeks of old acne problem that I faced in teenage. I have also started noticing fine lines around my eyes and forehead. I would like to know if there is any treatment for this. PranaliShah, Ahmednagar Dear Pranali Hi! There are a lot of options available in todays time for most of the skin isues Acne if not treated at an early stage can heal with marks and scars which could be superficial in the form of red or brown spots or in the form of tiny ice pick scars or deep scars which tend to be visible from a distance. Superficial marks could be lightened with the help of mild fruit peels, photofacial or laser toning treatments. Deep scars need to be treated with fractional lasers and chemical peels like glycolic or TCA peels. It is very important that you get these procedures done with a qualified dermatologist or a trained doctor to ensure safety & efficacy of the procedure. A quick fix treatment which is quite popularly opted for by models & brides to-be because of lack of time is hyaluronic based fillers. This is a safe lunch time procedure which not only reduces fine lines & wrinkles but also helps fill up the scars instantly. Fractional laser helps

renew the skin cells in the upper layers of the skin and boosts collagen levels in the dermis there by improving the skin complexion and helps in reducing scars as well as fine lines in the long run. Start using a sunscreen atleast twice a day & creams containing glycolic acid or retinol at night to help improve your skin complexion & to reduce your scars & fine lines.
2. I am 39 year old . I have a youthful face but my neck and hands skin look aged as they are dry and wrinkled. I have to meet people officially due to my work and I am not confident during meetings. Is there any solution which could make my neck and hands skin look younger. Ankita Kshirsagar, Nagpur We usually take more care of the face but areas like arms, hands and neck are also constantly exposed to sunlight. So we need to apply sunscreen twice during the day and protect the skin from harsh sun rays. Application of a moisturiser especially before sleeping will keep the hands hydarted. Skin on hands and neck have less number of oil glands. So the skin in these areas tends to get dry faster as

Standing Up Against The Bully
MUKKA MAAR BY POOJA KOCHAR
Problems without names tend to stay inadequately addressed, street harassment always starts with something verbal, an uncomfortable word or gesture is the beginning of an unpleasant experience. The shameful Bangalore incidence where several women were mobbed, eve teased and subjected to crude comments by random drunk men brings us to one big question, how safe are we in the public space?
20
February 2017 | Volume 2 Issue 11 | Living Local Mumbai
As a woman I feel extremely violated by the fact that a man can touch me inappropriately and conveniently get away with it. You expect it to happen but it doesn’t stop you from getting angry. We have a burden to protect ourselves all the time. We can either keep complaining and wait for a knight in shining armour to protect us or step-up and take charge of our own safety.
and the response has been extremely encouraging.
“no doubt you have to be alert and great with your technique but the first game you fight against the eve teaser is in your mind and I want these girls to realise that.”
Watching a bunch of 30-40 girls in the age group of 5 to 15 practicing marshal arts and self defence techniques on the Versova beach was a site to be proud of. The ideology behind Mukka Maar is simple, we will gear up our next generation to deal with these issues in a much more stronger way. The girls are mentored by trained instructors, their aim is to guide them and strengthen their confidence. One of them mentions, “no doubt you have to be alert and great with your technique but the first game you fight against the eve teaser is in your mind and I want these girls to realise that.”
Every step in the right direction deserves an applause and we are so proud of citizens like Ishita Sharma who turned her own experience with catcalls and eve teasing as a means to fuel her fight towards a bigger cause of women’s safety. Mukka Maar as the name suggests deals with the issue head-on, she started these workshops almost a year back in 2016
Initiatives like Mukka Maar require lot of support from the community and parents. “There are times when your fight might seems insufficient but you got to trust your bigger plan. Every time I feel unsure, a bright spark keeps me

going”. - Ishita Sharma When the harasser encroaches our personal space we are forced to be apprehensive about everyone around us and allow fear to take over us. We want more women to raise their voice and scream, we want more women to stand up for themselves as well as the not so privileged sections of our society. Let’s raise daughters of possibilities and courage.

CHOR BAZAAR Famous for its antique and vintage items all over Mumbai. Originally called as “Shor Bazaar”, meaning “noisy market but “shor” became “chor” meaning “thieves market” because the British mispronounced the word. Eventually stolen goods started finding their way into the market, resulting in it living up to its new name. And to go with a famous saying, If you lose anything in Mumbai you can buy it back from here!

3 POWAI LAKE Powai Lake (named after Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate) is an artificial lake in the Powai valley, where a Powai village with a cluster of huts existed. The authorities during the British regime intended to augment the water supply to Bombay City by creating a lake, and in 1890 Powai Lake was built by the British at an initial cost of Rs 6.5 lakh. At the time, Powai lake supplied two million gallons of water to Bombay. But today, this 120-year-old lake is used as an industrial sewage outlet.

Initiatives UTOPIA ‘Utopia’ which means ‘perfect world’. It was started by a group of individuals in 2012 that came up with an interesting concept to pull children out of the virtual world with a splash of fun and varied activities. The main aim of this Utopian team is to foster togetherness between a parent and child through engaging and designing happy events. Not limiting the bonding to just parent child the event is so crafted that there is bonding that takes place with your neighbors and fellow society members. The only event of its kind in Mumbai where all the members of a society unite and come together and participate as one team to win trophies for their society. The team believes that through such events a perfect world can come into shape. The events are designed in a manner where the parents and children come together on stage not just try to win medals for their society but take away sack full of happy moments which they could cherish for times to come. 2016 was the 5th year of Utopia with their last event held at the JBCN International School grounds. An inter society event where 25 events spread across 5 different categories like performing arts, Fine Arts, literary, juniors and open events.

The HIVE In an attempt to uplift avenues for alternate entertainment experiences, Sharrin and Co-Founder Sudeep Nair founded ‘The Hive’, five years ago. What started off as initially just a coworking space has today gone ahead to become one of the most sought after venues when it comes to the alternate culture scene in Mumbai. The name, ‘The Hive’ comes from the concept of the hive mind in psychology, which is a belief that everything in the world is an outcome of collaborative
effort. Sharin Bhatti, co-founder, too believes in the same. At The Hive, nothing actually takes place in isolation and it is always a joint endeavor to promote, uplift and celebrate art and its alternate forms. Situated in one of the typical Bandra style bungalows in Chium Village, The Hive has an entirely different charm of its own. It’s almost as if the space has a personality of its own, which is what the team has actively worked towards. Tiny and rounded stair cases, walls strewn with art works, overcrowded
book shelves, a tiny café, and a maze like co working space, along with a small performance area, this art experiment lab is sure to catch the eye, as well as the mind of any visitor. With almost one event each day, and packed houses on open mic nights and other pop ups, The Hive’s vision of creating and delivering quality alternate entertainment experiences are definitely materializing. Making India easy for Expats Meet Pallavi Singh, the founder of Hindi Lessons for Foreigners in India, a project which started off as a part time college stint, and has now culminated into a fully functional program with over 200 students. Why Hindi? “I was learning French during my college days, and at times I would just think of how amazingly convenient would it be, if I had someone with whom I could just converse in French, mostly like an everyday casual conversation to polish my language skills. This led to another
very vital thought, that I was not alone, and this was the plight of so many foreigners and expats who come to visit or stay in India. When you come to India, nobody teaches you the language, and sooner or later this can turn pretty agonizing.” It is with this interest in mind, that Pallavi began giving Hindi lessons to people who did not belong to the country and had no clue of the language. The trouble with linguistically inclined courses in India is that there is no infrastructure in place, which grants you with the
qualification to be a Hindi instructor, and hence she had to design and execute all her teaching modules single handedly. An engineer by degree, followed by another major in psychology and economics, Pallavi moved to Mumbai three years ago, to find her niche. Teaching Hindi to expats who either have Indian partners, or are stationed in the country for work, she helps them articulate India, in its most basic and lucid forms, a great way to transfer not just language, but a major essence of life in the subcontinent. Crayon Impact Crayon Impact is the brainchild of Rohan Sabharwal and Rachana Iyer. Crayon Impact helps to spread awareness on different causes in a dignified manner, dropping the need to pose as a charity with a begging bowl. The more traditional approaches to advocacy such as conducting lecture sessions or workshops that merely cite the problems and what the ‘ideal’ mindset should be, can only go so far. People are only really convinced about something when they experience it themselves. Crayon Impact believes that attitude and behavior change in larger society can be tackled in much more innovative and creative ways that push people to think for themselves and question their stereotypes and prejudices. They bank on performing arts such as film, poetry, theatre, improvisational comedy and visual arts to be the platforms that can engage people in a fun way and still address serious social issues at the same time. Dancing in the dark is a three-hour dance workshop with blindfolds on. It is an all-inclusive workshop, which means it is for people with disability or vision impairment and people without.
To volunteer to work on their events, donate film equipment for their next workshop or setting up a dancing in the dark event at your office: Contact: 8828364312 / www.getyourcrayon.org

Angel Xpress What stands today as a successful and renowned foundation for the underprivileged, Angel Xpress was born out of pure impulse and the desire to make a difference. “Angel Xpress is built around a vision to provide keen donors and volunteers with an authentic platform to directly extend their philanthropic support to the society; thereby bridging the gap between the donors and the deprived,” says Anubha Sharma who used her corporate experience and finances to set it up. “It’s the love I get from the children every time I walk into a center that keeps me going,” says Co-Founder Beenaa. Angel Xpress claims to bridge the gap of quality education by bringing in committed and dedicated adults who will pledge to help kids from underprivileged backgrounds with their academics, not only as teachers, but also as able guides and mentors for life. With this in mind, the foundation currently runs two main programs. AFX learning centers are core programs aimed at bringing in mentors to help children from these backgrounds with schoolwork. It currently has around seven centers in shaded corners of major parks. The second program is called the In-School English program, which stations AFX sponsored teachers in vernacular medium schools so that children in such schools are not deprived when it comes to learning the English language.
