The Entrepreneur Age (What qualifies one)?

Mach 2016 Volume 1 Issue 11

One line answer: You have to be a little crazy...Mmmm… Maybe more than a little. There is one common qualification for the ones who deserve to be called an entrepreneur. It is what separates them from the wannapreneurs. You do not need to go to a school or have Ivy League education for that qualification. Can you guess what it is? Ask any entrepreneur what qualifies him to be one and you are bound to get various answers. Some of the infamous answers around it are: I have a great Idea and I bet it will make millions. I am too smart to work for others. I want to do my own thing. I have read many of successful people’s biographies. I have seen the movie Social Network 25 times. Everyone is becoming an entrepreneur these days. I dropped out of college. Management Neeraj Vasudeva Content Zeba Akhtar (Assistant Content Manager) Sidharth Sodhi Graphic Designer Vaibhav Wankhade Photographer Manali Jain Sales & Marketing Ali Ansari (Andheri West) (ali.ansari@livinglocalmag.com) Prajesh Podikalam (Bandra-Khar) (prajesh@livinglocalmag.com) Swastik Prints Kiran Gala 9819701512

The Good news is that you do not get to hear too much about these kind of entrepreneurs. Sometime Editor-in-chief Anubhav Anand back there was a question Twitter- @anubhavanand tweeted by @YourStory – “Who is your favorite entrepreneur?” It made me think and I shared the story of my favorite entrepreneur. Here is an extended version of that answer. In Indian towns, there are some low-income group men who own a bicycle and every morning they smartly load up it with at least a 100 useful daily household items. The 3 feet tall bicycle now extends 3-4 feet on both sides and sometimes doubles up the height as well. He takes this door-to-door around town in neighborhoods making his daily sale. That man is an entrepreneur with THAT COMMON qualification that most entrepreneurs possess. That common qualification my friend is that they all take that PLUNGE, do it, and live it day in and day out. There is no two ways about it. The reason to be an entrepreneur could be a need or a desire. However, your qualification is your mindset and that is what separates the entrepreneurs from the wannapreneurs. Oh and I meant it what I wrote right in the beginning. You got to be crazy to be an entrepreneur. Go Crazy!

THE MECHANISM OF SELF-LOVE !

A

lady walked into my office a few months back. After reaching a deep point in our conversation, she expressed to me – “You know Priya, I used to wear lovely combinations of bindis, bangles, kolhapuris, kurtas, dupattas, maxis and skirts in my time; but it all suddenly stopped. I asked her, “Why did you stop all of it? Did anyone ask you to?” & she replied, “I don’t even remember, Priya! Nobody asked me to but I felt plenty of responsibilities – household chores, two children, weight gain, aging, social responsibilities, people pleasing acts. I gave up things I loved. I stopped loving myself because I was taught care of others is of prime importance after marriage, hence I overlooked my existence. I left it all. I feel stuck in my own body, not knowing what to do next, wearing the same outfits repeatedly to cover all that is unwanted. I have lost my confidence.” This way most women forget themselves while juggling between various roles, failing to strike a balance between work, home & self. Are you not important? Do you not require love & care from yourself? Remember each one of us is unique and there is no other individual exactly like you or me. You are

10

There is a beautiful saying for this, “Know first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.” as valuable as your husband, kids, parents, and relatives. If you are not satisfied/ happy with yourself, you will never be satisfied/ happy in your life, right. So take care of your - skin, hair, body, health, thoughts and actions. If you liked applying a red lipstick, do it. If you like a particular color, just wear it. It is your life, make it colorful. This time I want to empower all you girls & women to love yourself, spend time with yourself, and introspect on these questions: “Who are you? What do you like? What do you not like? What are your assets? What are your goals? Personal style is about getting to know you first. It’s about being connected with the very essence of who YOU are - and be confident about it There is a beautiful saying for this, “Know, first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.” There are a million different paths to self-love, and no one is quicker, better or more effective than others. There are a million different ways to strengthen your body image, and all of them are worth exploring. Personal style is one of the ways to transform your self-image. Therefore, these are some tips to enhance, empower, and evolve:

appearance. If you are one of those who feel “appearance doesn’t matter,” it means you are okay with your voice being ignored. One of the easiest ways to broadcast respect for you is to dress with care & while having a thought behind it. Dressing with care means - finding clothes that fit and suit you, considering your lifestyle and the message you want to send across before choosing your ensemble and selecting garments that make you feel comfortable, powerful, proud, and truly yourself. CONNECT BETWEEN LOOKING GOOD & FEELING GOOD: There is a cycle crveated when you do not feel happy about yourself. The cycle begins with self-neglect and ends at low self-confidence: look bad, feel bad, feel out of place, and feel neglected and on and on. Whereas, the cycle of self- love begins with self-care – If you are happy with yourself, you do not need anyone else to validate you. When you put effort into your appearance, you are less likely to hide from mirrors, eat nothing and diet, and withdraw from social situations. When you put effort into your appearance, you are more likely to receive compliments -- important sources of external feedback that encourage you to continue putting effort into your appearance. Caring about how you present your physical self to the world makes you present in your body. Presence in your body feeds itself, creating more care. It reminds you that you can control how you feel about yourself. Moreover, that’s a powerful thing. Everyone can use personal style as a tool for cultivating selfconfidence and reflect self-respect. You can utilize your natural beauty to reflect your undeniably amazing self, outward to the observing world. And when you do, you may find that you’ve kick-started the mechanism of self-love. EMBRACE THE CHANGE: Firstly, it is essential to accept that your body is changing, continuously. It is never going to be the same as when you went to college. And I thank God for it! As women, we tend to gain weight after marriage, or after having kids. Even though the weight may go away, but your body will never look the same again. Keep an open mind & understand your body will change for good. Change is the only constant. Then make changes to your wardrobe and style - Throwing on a skirt that works with your curves instead of hiding them, is a simple way. Slipping on a fantastic pair of jeans can illustrate those legs fine. Finding styles, colors and textures that enhance your natural assets can help you see how gorgeous you are right now -- and have been all along. Just by changing the thoughts for your body followed by change in clothing, shoes, and accessories that adorn your body, you can change your relationship with that body for the better. THE CHOICE IS YOURS! You are the only one to dress and groom your body, so you, alone, are in charge of how you appear to others. Since you’ve got to get dressed anyway, why not take the opportunity to broadcast a few key pieces of information about yourself to the observing world? All I am saying is – clothes communicate, style communicates; So you got to have a message in your appearance. Doing so can build pride and confidence, establish your uniqueness and help you decide which aspects of you to highlight. The Choice is YOURS! BEGIN WITH RESPECTING “YOUR”SELF! Each day we meet thousands people and even before we speak a word, we speak visually by our first glance i.e. March 2016 | Volume 1 Issue 11 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition) 11

Stereotypes are not just unreal but also incomplete; because they never let you complete your real story. Women are more than the way they look; we have been living the “sexy lie” for years. Discussing women’s issues over coffee is not my agenda, 30ish talks about concerns that value inner strength and challenges stereotypes. Our society is on the cusp of a massive change, it is the right time for women to get loud. There are so many women who are

marching towards entrepreneurship, this is a good sign. Living Local features some great talent, ever noticed what is the common factor binding all the stories? They are challenging themselves and the society. LIFE HACK When you are in a good relationship with yourself it holds you still, do not let the burden of stereotypes imbalance that equation. As an entrepreneur I can vouch that you will grow and find capacity that seemed impossible. Every time someone pulls you down you will find more energy to bounce back. Every knock will make you more stubborn about your goal. It will test every inch of your persistence, bend but do not break.

Failure is the only thing that will define the way you look at success, stay strong. You can have a great family and equally satisfying career, no one should ask you to pick one. A good sense of humor is going to add balance to your emotional turmoil. It will not make you happy but stronger. (most important tip) Self-doubt is going to be your new hobby, try not indulging. I believe in the power of good, when women come together and support each other it leads to a positive mind set. No matter what age, position, or seniority, you can always give and receive something by supporting other women. Collaborating and growing is the new mantra.

BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING… WITH YOUR MONEY LIFE!

by Vishal Dhawan

HOW WRONG IS IT FOR A WOMAN TO EXPECT THE MAN TO BUILD THE WORLD SHE WANTS, RATHER THAN TO CREATE IT HERSELF? -ANAÏS NIN

In

today’s world, each one of us wants to be independent. However, when it comes to financial independence, we see a bit of hesitation emerge. So why not think on similar lines when it comes to being financially independent? Financial independence has two parts to it – earning one’s own income, and taking investment decisions on your own. A survey conducted by a leading money manager a couple of years ago, seems to indicate that only 23% of working women take their own investment decisions. The rest depend on their spouse or others for the same. A young working woman needs to plan for instances such as higher education, a wedding break, or maternity leave. There could also be a case where her income is insufficient to sustain regular living expenses. If you are a homemaker, it is equally important to have a plan in place. The common risks which both working and non-working women may run into could be a divorce or turning into a widow at an early age or a risk of living longer than their husbands. All these may put them in a situation where they may have to take upon themselves the entire family responsibility from being able to having a decent standard of living to funding children’s education and weddings, as well as their own retirements and medical expenses.

IF YOU HAVE NOT STARTED THINKING ON THESE LINES, NOW IS THE TIME TO BEGIN:

We

got an opportunity to have a tete a tete with our avid writer, Tripti Gupta, Lifestyle Nutrition Consultant & Founder of iPink The Color Of Health who was recently Awarded the Best Diet Consultant in Mumbai by Prime Time Research Media Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi, She is also the Official Nutrition Expert to FBB Femina Miss India 2016 and Q & A columnist for Bombay Times. Here is a snippet from our conversation with her.

What has inspired you in your journey? The greatest inspiration for any individual is success & encouragement. Being successful in your efforts, being acknowledged, recognized and receiving a positive feedback always pushes you to better your best. This award is also like the beginning of a new journey for me altogether where I wish to not only continue giving my best to health but it further inspires me to work harder and offer more to society. What is the biggest challenge in one’s profession? The challenge is to be consistent. Giving your best to your profession is only the beginning; the challenge is to continue 18

to render your best. Genuine growth and success do not occur overnight, it is a process of constant hard work, patience, and consistency. I have been in the profession for 17 years now, but even today each day is like a new day for me where I constantly learn and grow, offering my best to my clients and still trying to better myself each day.

What is the one thing that can make a significant difference to anyone’s overall health? In today’s age, most people live their lives in extremes where convenience and speed have become of utmost importance. In this race, what we have lost is the precious treasure of Balance. Leading a balanced lifestyle, which accommodates work, family, leisure and time for self can make a huge impact on one’s lifespan and overall well being. It is not just about eating right or giving up your vices, it is also about living right. Good health is a combination of nourishment for the mind, body, and soul; it is this balance that we need to attain to make all the difference in the health of our families and our own. So are your services about nutrition or lifestyle?

March 2016 | Volume1 Issue 11 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

Nutrition and Lifestyle go hand in hand in building your health. If you eat right but lead an imbalanced or disturbed lifestyle, you will not be healthy. Health is a state of happy body and mind, which requires you to lead a healthy lifestyle. I, therefore, practice as a Lifestyle Nutrition Consultant whereby planning healthy diets are my main forte but I also balance your weight loss plans within a healthy disciplined time table, tailored within your lifestyle thus making it complete. I strongly believe that this is the only way one can achieve the right weight and continue to enjoy lasting results smoothly.

As a successful entrepreneur, please share a message with our readers? I have always believed that life is not about giving up or letting go but it is about staying strong. Winds of storm occur in each one’s life and may slow you down at any given time but what is important is that your journey should never stop. If you fall, get back on track that is your secret to success. Keep the faith, keep moving, growing, correcting and let nothing in the world let you stagnate, not even you, Success will surely be yours.

EXPERT SPEAK

Q1 Hi, I am Vikas. I’m a businessman & have a very busy work schedule. I need to attend a lot of business meets and social events. I do not like timeconsuming skin treatments like facials etc. Is there an instant fix which could give me a glow as well as save time? Vikas, Pune

Hi Vikas With very busy work schedules, it gets difficult to spare time for regular skincare at home. Busy professionals like you prefer to do treatments which are not only result oriented but are quick fixes with no downtime. Looking at your requirement we would suggest that you go in for a party peel that gives an instant glow and lightening effect. It hardly takes 15 to 20 minutes and does not cause any redness or peeling of skin. Another treatment which is very popular nowadays is the laser toning. It helps in lifting off the tan, lightens pigmentation and gives an instant healthy glow to the skin. Q2 Hi...This is Nisha. I am 23 years. I am a student. I have good skin but my only issue is dark under eyes. These make me look tired always. Also I have roughness and fine lines around the eyes. Can u suggest some remedy for

20

my problem? Nisha Jain, 23, Madhya Pradesh

Hi Nisha, To reduce the dark circles it’s very important first to know what causes them. There are many factors which contribute to dark circles like hereditary trait, anaemia, deep set or sunken eyes, Bad lifestyle like lack of sleep, irregular sleeping habits, eyestrain caused by too much time in front of computers all contribute to the same. Constant rubbing of eyes can not only lead to darkening of under eye area but can also cause appearance of fine lines. Fruit peels and lasers generally help in lightening under eye dark circles. For people who have sunken eyes, minimally invasive treatments like hyaluronic acid fillers help to a big extent by taking away the tired look. One could use lightening creams containing vitamin C, kojic acid and arbutin at night. Eye creams containing hyaluronic acid will help take care of fine lines and hydrate the region around your eyes. Keep chilled fresh cucumber slices on the eyes for 20 minutes. This helps calm down the eye region. Keep cotton pads soaked in rose water over eyelids for 15 minutes. This rejuvenates & soothes the skin around the eyes.

Q3 Hello. I am Manisha ...I am around 42 years. I always had very light eyebrows and recently I observed that the hair over this region is getting finer. I don’t like using an eyebrow pencil. My face looks very dull if I don’t apply the pencil. I need dark eyebrows which could enhance my face features. Please suggest. Manisha Rohra, 42, Mumbai

Hi Manisha. Eyebrows are a very important feature which adds definition to the face. The issue of having very light eyebrows is quite common. Some people are genetically predisposed to it and at times it can also worsen with age. The best solution for this issue is to get a permanent cosmetic makeup. Generally, 3 to 4 sessions are required for the desired effect to come.

Got a question about your skin and didn’t know whom to ask? Please write in to mumbai@sakhiyaskinclinic.com and Dr. Sharmila Nayak would be happy to answer your queries.

HEALTHY AGAIN Through INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE by Dr Lily Kiswani, MD. Endoscopic Surgery (Belgium) Nutritional Therapeutics (Stanford, UCSF, Vanderbilt)

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE IS HEALINGORIENTED MEDICINE THAT TAKES ACCOUNT OF THE WHOLE PERSON (BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT), INCLUDING ALL ASPECTS OF LIFESTYLE.

HOW IS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE DIFFERENT FROM CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE? Integrative medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease. Hallmarks of an Integrative medicine approach include: • •

L

Promotion of health as positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease. Integrative medicine practitioners look “upstream” to consider the complex interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, genetics and lifestyle that can lead to illness.

et us take a look at some examples:

AK, aged 65, suffering from diabetes since three decades, had poorly controlled blood sugar levels despite insulin and oral anti-diabetic drugs. She was fed up and chose to follow the Integrative Medicine protocol. There have been great advances in our understanding of Nutrition, during

22

the last decade. Using these principles, her HbA1C, which tells us how well her diabetes is controlled, dropped from 10 to 8 in two months. She was able to reduce her insulin dosage, as well as decrease oral drugs from 3 to just 1. Her weight dropped, especially belly fat. Since this is a risk factor for heart disease, she was very happy to say goodbye to the belly fat. Over the following months, she could be weaned off all medication, with blood sugar staying stable in the 80-85mg range. SK, aged 25, had PCOD – polycystic

ovarian disease – and had excessive facial hair, with very infrequent periods. 3 weeks after starting treatment, for the first time in 12 years, she had a clear face without using any hair removal methods. 3 years later, her periods are normal and she is looking to start a family. KA, aged 29, had psoriasis since childhood. She was put on an intensive protocol to heal her leaky gut. She is so thrilled that she no longer has any itchy, unsightly patches

EXPERTS FROM TRICA SOLVE YOUR WOES Q. 1 My husband is 35 yrs old. He has started balding; this has increased since 3 years. He has a genetic tendency for balding. Can he get back his hair without surgery? Sonali Sharma Dear Sonali, There are seven different stages in male hair loss. Depending on the stage of your husband’s hair loss, one can recommend the appropriate treatments. Non-surgical treatments like BiogenesisTM and Nutri-driveTM do work in effectively reversing the hair loss and regrowing the natural hair back. Opt for holistic, multipronged treatments to get best possible results, to get the natural hair back without surgery. In advanced

24

stages as well as in reconstructing the receding hairline, surgical treatments may be needed. Remember even when opting for surgical treatments like hair transplant, medical treatments need to be done simultaneously to ensure that the existing hair is preserved. Another non-surgical hair reconstruction is hair integration system. Using this solution, one can get a full head of hair instantly. This solution is very useful to give complete scalp coverage in advanced hair loss cases. Your husband should start with a detailed hair and scalp analysis and doctor’s consultation, which will enable customizing the right solution for him.

Q 2: Is there a way I can make my hair grow faster? Manisha, 30 years. Dear Manisha, The following are important in deciding our hair growth. Our Genes - this decides the duration of growth stage. An average Indian hair grows about 1.5 cm per month, so for example if your growth stage duration is 3 years, your hair length will be about 54 cms. This is already coded in our hair root DNA.  Seasons - In winters the hair growth is lesser than summer. Again, this is not in our control. Nutrition - vital for hair growth. Vitamin deficiencies (eg. iron, folic

acid, vit D, zinc), lack of adequate protein intake, too much of refined carbohydrates (those empty calories in aerated drinks, sugar, maida, polished rice), preservatives, fried food all prevent optimal hair growth.  DISEASES (eg. TB, Typhoid, Jaundice etc.) and other stressful conditions reduce hair growth  SCALP PROBLEMS

and fatty acids (EFA). The best way to take anti-oxidants is to add more colour to your diet. Berries, pomegranates, carrots, beetroots, papaya, leafy vegetables all have good anti-oxidants. Take five almonds and three walnuts a day to get the EFA. Check for deficiencies and take nutritional supplements as needed. They avoid hair damage.

Get your hair and scalp checked for early warning signs, treat any problems early on, take hair and scalp rejuvenating treatments regularly and you should be able to make your hair grow faster.

boils, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis -these reduce the hair growth  OXIDATIVE DAMAGE TO HAIR ROOTS chemical (straightening, colouring), environmental (pollution, intense UV damage) THEREFORE, HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROMOTE HAIR GROWTH: Eat hair friendly foodstuff - Antioxidants and Essential proteins

THE ART OF NAIL EXTENSION

Synthia Lau International Beauty and Wellness Expert (Singapore)

T

HE ART OF NAIL EXTENSION

Nail extensions – A lightweight plastic plate that follows the shape of the nail is glued to the tip of the natural nail in order to add length. Acrylic, gel, fibre, glass or another mixture is then applied on top of the extension and is usually ‘cured’ in order to secure the extension and add strength and shine.

Types of nail extension 1. Acrylic nails 2. Gel nails WHAT ARE ACRYLIC NAILS? Acrylics are the oldest form of nail extension in the modern beauty industry, and have long since been a staple due their staying power. The acrylic itself is a mixture of liquid monomer and a powder polymer, which when combined forms a hard protective layer that is sculpted over the natural nail. Acrylic nail extensions will only become hard when exposed to air, and when this happens and the

26

process is complete the nails get a strong and glossy base that is a fantastic for colour application. The procedure is a multi-step process that usually involves preparing the natural nail by cleaning, shaping, buffing and cuticle work, then applying artificial tips to add length (if required) and the acrylic on top.

WHAT ARE GEL NAILS? Gel is a special mixture that is applied either on top of an artificial nail extension, or directly onto the natural nail bed to strengthen the nail and promote natural growth. The gel is usually applied in very fine layers, with the nail technician ‘curing’ or ‘sealing’ the gel with a UV light between each layer so that the finished result is hard but still flexible with a natural looking glossy finish which is both instantly dry and chip resistant. Whilst gel can be applied on top of an artificial extension to add length, they are particularly good for individuals who have very short,

weak or bitten nails because they allow the nail to strengthen and grow below the layer of gel

NAIL OVERLAYS Overlays skip the extension step, and instead of adding artificial length onto the nail, the strengthening mixture is simply applied directly onto the natural nail in order to add strength and durability. You are more likely to be overweight if your friends and neighbours are. OBESITY SHORTENS OUR LIVES Moderate obesity (BMI 30-35) cuts life expectancy by 2 - 4 years and severe obesity (BMI 40-45) by a decade, according to a study in the Lancet in 2009. This is most likely to affect today’s children. OBESITY COULD BANKRUPT A GOVERNMENT The NHS spends billions every year on diseases such as strokes and diabetes that are linked to obesity. That is predicted to climb to £15bn soon. India is the diabetic capital of the world! CREATING A NICHE FOR BAR FOOD By Zeba Akhtar

Chef Kshama Prabhu, Executive Chef at The Bar Stock Exchange and Corum Hospitality

W

hen I heard about Chef Kshama, I must say I was a little puzzled because of my little knowledge about bar food. For me, it was always the alcohol that preceded in preference. However, one conversation with her, and my perception about bar food changed overnight. With over ten years of experience as a culinary diva, and a profile that boasts of some of the best names in the food world, Chef Kshama is a force to reckon with. Currently the executive chef for The Bar Stock Exchange chain, along with Corum Hospitality, she explained the value in bar food. “After having travelled the world over, when the offer to head The Bar Stock Exchange chains came to me, I was a little skeptical. I did not know how much of a value food added to a sphere like drinking. But I was more than just surprised to see how food works even in club scenes.” With a background in fine dining and modern European cooking, heading BSE was quite an experience for Kshama. She is currently on the threshold of launching a completely new menu, where her attempt is to make bar food fun and exciting, while at the same time keeping it tasty and healthy. “BSE was quite a challenge for me. When I took it up a year and a half ago, I had no clue how to go around it. It was this new experience into the arena of bar food, that kept me going and of course my will to keep exploring and learning. The food menu has been designed in such a way that it goes well with the drinks people order. We may not be heavily

priced, but all our dishes are made with the choicest of ingredients, which is why people keep coming back to us over and over again. I think the pairing fits just right.” Smiles Kshama as she tells me of her association with bar food.

How was it working with Chef Gordon Ramsay, we asked. “It was a sheer delight. I was so awed by him. As a chef, I can easily say that it was my dream come true and that stint was one of the most beautiful phases in my journey.”

HER EXPERIENCE GIVES HER THE EXPERTISE, INSIGHT, AND FORESIGHT REQUIRED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE BAR STOCK EXCHANGE WALL OF FAME.

A fan of her mother’s cooking, Kshama always had an affiliation towards good food. She initially pursued hotel management, only to realize that food and cooking was her major calling, and gradually migrated towards the same. She began her career at The Jumeriah Hotel, and moved on to Views, a hotel situated on the 50th floor of the Emirates Hotel, known for its spectacular view and amazing food all over.

It was during her stint at The Emirates Hotel that she had the privilege of working with Chef Nancy Kinchella who advised her to relocate to London in order to explore better possibilities. It was this advice that led Kshama straight to Boxwood Café, by Chef Gordon Ramsay.

She recalls fondly. From London, she moved to Australia for the sheer love of travel and to explore a new culture and country. It was during those days that the decision to move back to India surfaced, and the Bombay girl returned home, with much grit and determination to carve a niche for herself. An ardent lover of Mediterranean and Modern European cuisine, Kshama considers her pastas and risottos to be a signature. Her kitchen, she believes is incomplete without garlic and it has remained her chosen flavor over the years. When asked about the new menu for

Bar Stock Exchange, Kshama revealed two new additions known as the Missal Fondue; a spicy Mumbai missal, with pao in the form of croutons, and 2 am Cheesy Pao; the ultimate greasy craving after a drunk night.

That apart her suggestions from the BSE menu were the Tandoori Pomfret for her love for fresh catch, and the ever-famous chicken tikka popcorn. Kshama’s proficiency lies in her remarkable ability to manage her team efficiently and consistently create a special variety of delectable dishes of Modern European and Mediterranean cuisine, all within a professionally rewarding environment. Her experience gives her the expertise, insight, and foresight required to contribute to The Bar Stock Exchange wall of fame. We cannot wait to see what more does the culinary diva have up her sleeve with her never-ending inventions at The Bar Stock Exchange.

What’s Happening UNQUOTE THE QUOTES by Divya Panday

X-BOX AT BREWBOT! Located off Link Road, Brewbot Eatery and Pub Brewery spells good news for all beer aficionados in the city. I reached 30 minutes before ‘Hoppy Hours’ ended (4-8 pm) and the crowd had just started to arrive. With plush booths to spend long drinking nights and decor covered with debris from a dystopian future with bot propaganda graffiti on the walls, I found the ambience as edgy as the beers. The brewery opened its doors almost two years ago, allowing Mumbaikars to imbibe surrounded by enormous vats of artisanal brews like Skywalker (German Kolsch), Mojo Rising (Mid western pale ale), Floating Head (German Hefeweizen) and Black Mamba (Chocolate Oatmeal Stout) and the newest addition and an already crowd favorite, Bot-work Orange, a Belgian Witbier. There has been a rise in the number of breweries in Mumbai, but none of them come close to Brewbot’s artisanal craft brews. They also happen to be the only ones who brew a mid western pale ale in the city. It was a pleasure seeing the beers being prepared from scratch right in front of my eyes. Each of them has its own unique identity which my server was more than happy to educate me about. For hops aficionados, they also offer a tour of the brewery! By day the bots serve patrons with exciting deals like their newly launched ‘express lunch’, and by night the lights dim, the brewery transforms. They regularly hold DJ events and theatre shows. In addition to this, they have installed a Xbox downstairs where I enjoyed a glass of ‘Bot-work Orange’ with a side of Fifa! In my opinion, the beer guzzling bots combined with premium craft beers makes it a brewery not to be missed!

Motley’s new production in their storytelling on stage series is a tribute to master satirist Krishan Chander. The play consists of selections from his celebrated works - Hindi ka Naya Qaida, Ek Gadhe ki Aatmakatha and his famous short story Gaddha (The Hole). Highly popular for many decades among Hindi readers from the 40s, Krishan Chander’s short stories invariably highlighted the plight of the common man in his struggle to survive. His puckish humour is highly reminiscent of the celebrated R.K. Laxman and his Autobiography of a Donkey and its sequels were huge best sellers in their time. Somewhat ignored now, this production is a tribute to him and an attempt to revive interest in one of India’s first Urdu Satirists.

It is rightly said - one should never underestimate the power of women. India has produced time and again the strongest women as per their competence and influential power. Be it a fighter like Rani Lakshmi Bai or the Nightingale like Smt Sarojini Naidu, putting India in the global lime light with their killing sports abilities like Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza or the ISRO women staff who have been helping in the Mars mission of India. Our country has millions of women who are taking India to the top. Amongst many women, there was a woman who was known for her unconditional love towards the needy- Mother Teresa. Although she was not and Indian but she was known for her humility. Here are some quotes by her which needs to be unquoted by everyone:

People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are Kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be Kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be Honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be Happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do Good, Give the World the best you have and it may never be enough, give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God, it was never between you and the anyway. I used to pray that God would feed the hungry, or do this or that, but now I pray that He will guide me to do whatever I am supposed to do, what I can do. I used to pray for answers, but now I am praying for strength. I used to believe that prayer changes things but now I know that prayer changes us and we change things. Spread love everywhere you go. First of all in your own house, give love to your children, to your wife or your husband, to a next door neighbor. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of gods kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.

MAKING LOCAL TRAVEL MEANINGFUL

VAGABOND! By Zeba Akhtar

W

ho says travel is only for leisure? These four young guns at Vagabond are proving us wrong! Offering custommade adventure travel, they are all set to view the way we look at travelling. This inspiring story of four students fresh out of college is not just about starting up a firm, but about their spirit of creating unforgettable experiences! We caught up with the four founders of Vagabond, and told us how it is done! When and how did the idea of Vagabond come about? All four of us did our Bachelors of Arts from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Elton graduated in 2012 and started work in the travel industry. Shannon, Jinks and I graduated in 2014. Shannon free-lanced (still does) as a graphic designer here and there. Jinks and I were getting good at wasting our time. We were not easily sold on getting jobs as nothing really appealed to our interests. So eventually, fuelled by entrepreneurial zeal, or as some call it, being broke, we decided to start something of our own. We started with heritage walks. Elton and Shannon

36

joined us within the first couple of months. Soon enough, we were planning our first big event: Fields of Sound. Since then, we haven’t looked back. Tell us a little bit about team Vagabond? We are four friends who work together. Elton is the only one who has worked in a professional corporate setup before that. Shannon is our design guru. Jinks knows everything about the music and artistes. Nihar mostly looks after content. We are pretty different as people, but together we’re like a smooth functioning machine. Were all of you travel enthusiasts from the start? Yes. We love travelling. But one of the most important aspects of travelling for us is that we like to truly experience the place we’re going to; be it music, art, theatre or cuisine. Of course, we always add our own elements of nature and live music especially since all four of us are guitarists and singers as

well. The typical idea of tourism is just boring, which is why our major focus is to not just visit places, but also create experiences and memories you will never forget. What was the initial phase like? We are still in our initial stage in a manner of speaking. Working with your friends could get challenging as well. But we’re happiest at work and that’s what keeps us going. How many getaways have you people administered and executed already? We have been organizing extremely varied events and getaways since we began. We have organized roughly 10 treks in and around Mumbai. We have held our flagship event twice Fields of Sound, which involves all the things we love such as adventure, sports, live music, camping amidst nature and great food. We organize at least two white water rafting trips every monsoon to Kolad. We also do offbeat and niche events such as Bombay Heritage Walks (Time Machine), Rural Experience Camps and Harry Potter Quizzes

at BREWBOT See page 49

(OWLs) every now and then. We also organize training programmes and conduct team building and leadership seminars for corporates and colleges. In the wake of adventure travel, and the era of #wanderlust, what is it that sets you apart? We are called Vagabond; we are literally wanderers. Travel, music, and nature are what unite the four of us in spirit. We look at ourselves as experience designers. Nothing is more important to us than showing our clients a good time. We pay a lot of attention to detail to give them truly unforgettable experiences. Why the name, Vagabond? Because that is what represents us best I guess. Where do you see this going in the next 2 years? We want to explore our country inside out. Go to places no one is seen before and do things no one has done. We want to be the promise for a great time. So far, we have been local with our events, but soon we are going to start trips to the north; Himachal, Uttarakhand and so on. We also want to give a platform to local acts from every neighbourhood of Bombay. We want to contribute to the scene. Being in the travel and leisure industry, what do you think are the two biggest pros and cons? Pro: Life is a vacation. We are travelling all the time. It is awesome. Con: Goodbye weekends. We are working almost every weekend. How easy or difficult is it to manage client preferences? So far, we have not had a lot of trouble in this department, but it is still early days.

If you were to suggest a getaway for team Living Local, what would it be? Since you are called Living Local, you should come for Time Machine; it’s a tour of the heritage district of Bombay. Walk with us as we tell you the story of our beloved city. You will be surprised as to how little you’ve known all along about this city of dreams.

e sits there with his juice trolley etvery day. Every morning as I look outside my window, the juice wala as I used to call him, is always present. He would be spotted until as late as 11 in the night, serving his customers patiently. I have always wondered how he spends his entire day, but doing the same old job every day. This time, I decided to catch up with him, and my curiosity was finally satiated. Meet Shadab Khan, an eighteen year old, who moved to Mumbai from Baans Bareily about a month and a half ago. Currently a resident of Behram Baug, this smiling youngster initially came to Mumbai just for a casual visit in order to spend some good time in the maximum city with his cousins. However, as fate would have it, a vacation turned into something bigger and Shadab decided to stay on and take his brother’s business forward. Hence, he too started selling juice on Yari Road. I asked him, “How does it feel like to be in Mumbai?” “Well, it feels really nice to be in this city. It looks so different from home. There are so many people here all the time. It is as if the city never sleeps. I did not get too much time to go places, but I did go to Juhu Chowpatty! That was real fun.” “I do not have too many friends here for now, and whatever friends I have are just like me. Working, and busy. Work is actually a mix of fun and boredom, but that is the part of living right? You cannot have everything all at once, right?”

BOY by Zeba Akhtar

YOU SAID YOU LEAVE YOUR TROLLEY EVERY NIGHT ON THE ROAD. WHAT IF SOMEONE STEALS IT ?

You said you leave your trolley every night on the road. What if someone steals it?” struck my curious self once more. “I don’t really think much about these things. If someone has to steal my things, it tells more about who they are, than about who I am. It is all a matter of destiny. I know one thing for sure; there is no power over destiny. Someone cannot take away what is meant to be mine; just the same way I cannot take away what does not belong to me.” The conviction with which he said these words made me reflect on his wisdom. To me they struck deep, and I am not sure if he is still aware of the inborn stoicism, which he goes on about daily life with.

HANDLING

EACH CASE WITH CARE

Dr. Indu Tandon, Occupational Physiotherapist

by Zeba Akhtar

When I finished my Masters

in Orthopedic, I was handed over a peculiar case. It was the case of a man who was in the profession of marble cutting, and the machine had fallen over his arm. The hospital doctors had rejoined the arm, but it was devoid of any movement. My challenge was to change the perceptions of the doctors and bring back hand movement for the man. Devoid of a clinic, I used to treat him at home, and within a year, he regained hand movement. That’s how I began.” The above-mentioned case is an anecdote from the life of Dr. Indu Tandon, one of the most famous occupational physiotherapist in the hood, who has been in the sector for the past eighteen years, and today, has attained the position of being one of the most sought after physiotherapist in the country. From helping popular film actor Hrithik Roshan for his film, ‘Guzaarish’, to treating the needy in the most remote parts of the city, free of cost, this phenomenal woman has done it all. What started as one sole center has multiplied into three different centers across the city, and on an average, her services have been bringing joy into the lives of at least fifty to sixty individuals every single day.

40

“When I started off, it was just me. However, I was hungry to learn. I knew that my true learning would not come within the confines of a posh clinic. I needed to be out there, and treat real people, and different ailments to enhance my learning. This is exactly what I did for the first five years of my career. I went as far as the remotest corners of Bhayander, and treated patients just to expand my horizons.” Shares Dr. Indu as she talks about her humble beginnings. Today, her centers have a team of over ten physiotherapists, directed towards different types of ailments. Dr. Indu is a firm believer in the

Over the years, she notices a trend in the age group of her patients. Gradually it fell from senior citizens, to young college going kids. Thus started another idea. She was convinced that there was something that needed to be studied concerning the lifestyle of children and the resulting physiotherapeutic

needs. Her study, being one of a kind in the country, brought her closer to the realization even young children need proper physical guidance to prevent risks later on and hence, very recently she came up with a special center for kids. Today, she even ties up with school to make physical fitness and well-being, an important part of the curriculum. “Apart from kids, and special cases of rehabilitative physiotherapy, one of my key areas of concern, for long has been the health of women. As women, we are so caught up in all spheres of life, that we barely make time for ourselves. The slightest of health concerns remain neglected and we end up with huge physical as well as mental strains. Women function differently, in terms of both fitness as well as hormones. This concern made me design special exercises for women. These exercises not only help women build flexibility, and stamina, but also focusses on maintaining their weight. It is a mix of breathing exercises as well, which is essential for calming and emotional wellbeing.” This is exactly what she believes is good for her female patients. If there is one thing that this courageous and experienced personality has learnt, it is to never say no to anything. One of her biggest assets, she reveals is the fact that she believes in treating the seemingly impossible. It is such cases that help her extend her expertise, and make the lives of her patients easier. When asked about her plans, she happily revealed that her only plan is to keep working hard. “I only believe in grit and hard work. Not only for myself, but also for the ones I treat.”

JUHU ‘TARA’

By Sidharth Sodhi and Asheesh Kapur

On asking him where he resides he tells me that currently he does not have a pucca or kachha house (makaan). He sleeps under a mosquito net, which is covered on top by a plastic sheet. That, he says is his ‘kutiya’ (hut). At night, he places two bamboo sticks outside his kutiya and ties a rope between them where his clothes hang to dry. In the morning, he simply folds everything and moves on. “Main kab soya, kab utha, kissi ko pata hi nahin chalta”, he signs off laughing.

Mumbai’s Juhu circle traffic junction. A short kind looking man with a smile on his face. Dressed in white he holds a placard in his hands raised above his head. The placard reads “Apney dharam par chalo. Sabsey prem karo” (Follow your religion. Love everybody). That is the image of Mr. Krishna Das that pops in my head when a friend of mine mentions “... that dude at the juhu circle” as we sit in a cafe sipping hazelnut flavoured hot chocolate. After about a month, me and my colleague Asheesh Kapur land up one fine morning at 7 AM at Juhu beach near Tulip Star hotel to interview Mr. Krishna Das. He had informed me over the phone that we would spot him easily at the beach, either playing with the dogs or placing his plac-ards next to his bicycle. We spot him at once next to his bicycle and introduce ourselves. He does the same and introduces us to the six-seven stray dogs around us who are his friends. There is ‘da-da’, who protects his cycle and placards. Then there is ‘Daboo’, ‘Tukul’, ‘Bawdi’, ‘Siku’ etc. We say hello to them. Within a few minutes, Mr. Krishna Das picks up his placard and the three of us begin to take an early morning walk. “Aao, chaltey baat kartey hain” he says. I was born in Moradabad but my umbilical cord is ‘connected’ to the city of Gwalior. “Gwalior se meri pehchaan hai” (he says as he smiles at the people walking by who wave at him). My father was a religious man. So growing up I too spent a lot of time immersed in prayer and worship. However, by the time I got to the age of eight-ten years the kids in my neighborhood had taught me to smoke a beedi and indulge in other bad habits. Our family was well respected in the city. They say if you want to ruin a man, you should spoil his children. I started to get into bad habits. My family did not like this. I was young and did not realize I was going overboard. Eventually things got out of hand and my elder brother took me to Gwalior. In time, he sent me to ‘Nainital Sainik School’ to study. However, my heart was not in studying. I ran away from the school (laughs). However, I was completely in love with the natural beauty of that place. The mountains, the trees, they called out to me.

Who are the people who inspire you? This reminds me of a story. When people used to go to Gautam Buddha to seek answers to their problems, he used to tell them that I should answer all your questions my child. But first sit quietly in maun (meditation) for two years. Anyone who did that got all the answers. Whether it is idol worshipping or praying to the infinite god, an understanding of things comes when one remains silent. Also in response to your question-, I connect with the teachings of Morari Bapu. Why choose the city of Mumbai to spread your message? Society is dependent upon media. Media is an excellent way to bring about change in society. People do as they see in films, on TV. Just look at how the people of Mumbai lead such tense, anxiety-filled lives. On TV, there are so many channels and programs on religion, dharam, satsangs etc. As a result, people are becoming more religious and dhaarmik too. This city has done this very big thing. The people of Mumbai lead such hectic lives. Yet at the end of the day, they show the rest of India the correct path. It is beautiful.

Later I also spent a few years in the Himalayas to meditate. Meditation gives one immense power. A sadhu first needs to disconnect from this world. “Phir baad mein woh apni urja se duniya ko sambhaal sakta hai.” Your placard reads “Apney dharam par chalo. Sabsey prem karo”. What do you mean by this? India is a secular and peace-loving nation. Here people are free to practice their respective religions and have been doing so harmoniously for a very long time. The problem arises when people start to interfere in other’s beliefs or practices. It is important to have ‘acceptance’ in day-today life for different perspectives, beliefs, and situations. We should learn ‘acceptance’ - to operate without prejudice. Do you plan to take your message to other cities too? “Bhaiya Bhutan gaya tha main paanch saal pehley. Arrest kar liya tha wahaan pe mujhe. Teen ghantey thaane mein bithaa ke rakha tha”. I suppose they did not know Hindi or angraezi. Howev-er, one good thing I saw there is that the police is very honest. There is no corruption. One time I was traveling there in a cab and I asked the driver if he ever had to bribe a police officer? He said “Maharaj, agar hum table ke neeche se eik dengey na toh humaarey sar par woh upar se do dengey.”

LL | community Chronicles of the Hood

VERSOVA KOLIWADA by Zeba Akhtar

T

o be in Mumbai and not have a look at the local community would be blasphemous. The hood of Andheri has many hidden gems, and places that deserve attention. However, not every such place is a club, or a restaurant. This time it is a place, that embodies the spirit of one of the oldest communities of the city, the anglers of Versova, living within the age old Versova Koliwada. Technically, the term koliwada is referred to as the place where the fishing community of a particular place reside. The original name of Versova is ‘Vesave’ and in Marathi, it means a ‘resting place’. What looks like just any other beach, and residential area, actually has a history of its own. When the Arabs first landed in Mumbai via the coastal route, they were washed ashore on the Versova beach. They ended up killing and massacring everyone that they could find on the beach. Post that, in the early part of the eighteenth century, Versova became a part of the Portuguese empire. The indigenous fisherman community during those times ended up converting to Christianity under the influence of the Portuguese. However, the Portuguese could not retain the area for very long, and lost to the Marathas. The Marathas strengthened the fort of Versova as well. Unlike other coastal areas of the city, massive rocks to prevent the waves have guarded the Versova beach. Most part of the beach is inhabitable because the waves come high up, except for the Koliwada. If you take a walk through the place, you will find lines of bamboos shafts constructed in the form of shelves. These shelves are used to dry fish, which is later sold on to other sellers. A walk through Koliwada easily gives you a glimpse of the day to day living of these people. Be it the boats resting on the marshy edge of the beach, the stench of drying fish, the small settlements overlooking the sea, Koli fishermen seated in a huddle, some playing cards whereas some seemed busy sorting out their fishing nets. It appears to be one of the most colorful neighborhoods, with huts painted in multiple colors, and children playing cricket on the beach, while the Koli women, dressed in their bright sarees, with green bangles adorning their wrists, sit outside their houses, some busy cooking, while some chat away to glory. Not only does the community engage in fishing, but also in methi cultivation. The Versova Koliwada is a place brimming with the Koli culture and every year, they spread their culture further by organizing the Versova Koli Festival where the Koli women prepare traditional and fresh seafood recipes. People from all over the city flock here in large numbers to celebrate the magic of traditional Koli cuisine. It is also a great place for budding photographers, as each frame is so full of life that it will remain etched in memory.

2016 MAKE IT HAPPEN

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

E

By Zeba Akhtar

By Zeba Akhtar very year, on the 8th of March, we invariably see dedications to women on the occasion of Women’s Day. But do you know how did this day and its symbolism come into place?

The first time women’s day was celebrated in New York, on the 28th of February, 1908. In those days, it actually had major political significance. That very year, 8th of March had been selected by the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union to stage a strike, which was called off before it even began. This inspired other women based counterparts in different parts of Europe. Years later, the United Nations conferred 8th of March as International Women’s Day, and since then it is being celebrated the world over. This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”. We thought you might be on the lookout for some out for some out of the box ways to celebrate Women’s Day and hence got you a list: Visit the local shelter and donate to victims of abuse and violence. Try to make them feel empowered by discussing your stories.

Help with the education of a girl child. When you teach a child, you teach a generation and there is no better empowerment than education. Get together with your gang of girls and go out for a nice long brunch. Make it a point to catch up with each other and rekindle the bond. Men can make it a point to acknowledge the women in their life by doing small things such as preparing a meal, or writing notes, or just a plain good conversation. Women love being expressed to, and this could be a good moment. Kids could bake a cake, or help their mom out with the chores. The small gestures always make the major difference. Gift your special woman, a treat at the spa and make her feel rejuvenated. Gift purple flowers to women who have inspired you, or made you feel happy in some way or the other. You could also add small notes of appreciation along with it. The color purple is the official symbol of International Women’s Day. Have a movie marathon with the girls. Pick out your best women oriented films and make the day even more inspiring.

STEP UP YOUR GAME

This Holi

Y

HOLI HAI...

es, it is the season of fun and colours once again. Holi is the season to rejoice, and the season to celebrate growth and all things new. So, just so you stay ahead of everyone else’s game on Holi, we bring to you, a few Holi hacks. • Gulp It Down Of course, bhang is the staple, but that does not mean you shy away from other drinks. This season, beat the heat with cocktails infused with fresh juices such as watermelon juice and kiwi juice. Not only are they tasty, but also help you remain hydrated and well nourished for a day full of fun! • Munch It Up: The gujiyas, puran polis, and imartis will always remain staple. But if you want to keep it different then go for some healthy finger food. Chaats with fresh yogurt, fruit salads, baked chips, and dips can be your pick to make up for the otherwise greasy food that you would have indulged in.

• Stay Pampered: Holi makes your skin scream. Oh yes, we have all been painted black and blue with different colors, that refuses to go. Some of us have even woken up with rashes the next day. The best way to avoid this is to be prepared in advance. • Use organic colors to stay safe. Dry holi is always the best idea, however if you are a lover of rain dance, then prep up your skin with some cold cream or oil before you enter the party. Post holi care includes rubbing lemon wedges to your skin as it has natural bleaching properties. • Holi Playlist: Music is a key priority at all holi parties. If you cannot hunt for each song then the world of the internet has it all figured out for you. Portals such as Saavn and 8tracks have special customized Holi playlists exclusively for you. So get the beat rolling! •

Holi Fashion: Tune up your style

By Zeba Akhtar quotient this holi and look your best. If you do not want to splurge on new clothes, then this is the time for some do-it-yourself hacks to make the rounds. Take old jeans and cut them out to make cool shorts. Even if they get wasted, you won’t regret it. Guys can add zing to their old shirts by chopping off the sleeves. Make sure you step out for the holi party, in style. •DIY Colors: If you do not trust market manufactured colors, then don’t you worry. We have that covered for you as well. Crushed marigold flowers and haldi can make up a good alternate for yellow, whereas crushed rose petals work best as red color. You can also use dried red hibiscus flowers. Jacaranda flowers can help you make blue color as well. If you are not the ones to indulge in so much hard work, then you can go ahead and order them on a number of online portals as well! So we have it all researched for you. Follow these simple tips and have a great Holi! To share your Holi fun and frenzy, log on to www.livinglocal.com and claim your Hood!

CREATING THE VAULT OF GOOD TIMES- BOVEDA Yasho Sonthalia & Abhishek Goyal

QUICK CAME THE REPLY, “THE WORD BOVEDA IS A SPANISH TERM FOR ‘VAULT’, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THE FEEL OF BOVEDA IS LIKE.” by Zeba Akhtar

If

you happen to be a hooder of Andheri, then you must have heard this name for sure. Yes, we are talking about Boveda, the resto bar that has been grabbing the eyeballs of most partygoers in the hood ever since it opened. The name ‘Boveda’ has been intriguing us for quite some time and hence we ended up in a conversation with the two young minds behind it, Yasho Sonthalia and Abhishek Goyal. The idea for Boveda had been a well researched and thought out plan. Yasho and Abhishek, two friends from school, who ended up in Singapore for their higher studies, came up with a plan. In Singapore, the two of them had been very used to going out and trying various cuisines all across the city. The love for food, forever enticed Yasho, whereas Abhishek was always captivated by great music. So, towards the end of their journey in Singapore, the idea for creating a resto bar with amazing music, and a never seen before ambience was born. Why the name, Boveda, we asked?

48

Quick came the reply: “The word Boveda is a Spanish term for ‘vault’, which is exactly what the feel of Boveda is like.” South Bombay is known for its cool party scenes and amazing local hangouts, and more often than not, people from Andheri ended up traveling all the way up to town to explore their fun quotient.

the lookout for great food, some good music, and great ambience, and it is exactly that chord of clientele which we wanted to strike. Our idea was simple. Even when it came to the food menu, we asked our chef to cook up their best and invited friends and family to review it. The best of the dishes were picked up for the menu. The same formula was applied to our cocktail menu, and

This is exactly what Yash and Abhishek aimed at changing. “We knew that there were people in Andheri who were on

I can easily take the liberty of saying that we serve some of the best cocktails in town.” Grins Yasho, as he explained

the initial phase of their journey. Soon Boveda achieved a reputation for not only being a place for amazing food, and the best cocktails, but also gained credit when it came to music.

the eventual growth of their combined dream. The two have put in effort even in the most minute of quarters, be it interiors, or cutlery, menu, or music.

“We began the cult of alternative music and artists in this part of the city. We can proudly say that we have been party to some of the best of music gigs in the city. In fact, we have had clients who have come all the way from South Bombay. It is this trend that we wanted to bring in, and I may say that we have been fairly successful. There have also been times when we were overcrowded even on Monday nights.” Beams Abhishek as he traces

It may have well been perceived that after such phenomenal success, one might get complacent, but I am afraid we cannot say the same for these two entrepreneurs. “We are always on the go, because we know that in this industry, continuous innovation is the key. We cannot afford to just sit back and relax. In fact, currently the idea is to limit down on the number of gigs and shift the focus back to food. With the same idea in mind,

we have begun the Sunday brunches as well as the all-day menu. We just don’t want to be known for good music, we want to be known for our gastronomic dishes as well, and are already in the process of defining a new menu.” Revealed the two partners. We asked if there was another Boveda in store, and all the two did was smile. Well, here’s hoping that the city does end up getting another Boveda, and these two enterprising individuals keep coming up with something new to enthrall us each time.

EXAM TIME By Nivedita Mataliya

In this final part of our series on ADHD, we will focus on the most important component and that is what you can do as parents to help your child. Here goes: Nivedita Mataliya is a counseling psychologist specializing in children and relationship counseling

15-year-old Tina is a sincere student. She studies regularly and is bright. Yet her results have not been up to mark for the last two exams. During counselling, she hesitantly revealed that she would “blank out” in the exams and was ashamed to tell her parents. Tina was a typical case of exam anxiety. A little bit of anxiety is good. It helps improve performance. However, after a point it becomes debilitating. As parents, you may feel that your child is acting or making excuses for not having studied enough. However, that may not always be the case. The child may be genuinely suffering from exam anxiety.

THE SYMPTOMS: • Somatic: Shortness of breath, headache, rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, nausea, feeling faint, excessive urination, diarrhoea. In certain cases exam anxiety can lead to a panic attack where the child feels intense fear and is unable to breathe. • Emotional: Anger, fear, helplessness, low self-esteem & disappointment. • Cognitive: Difficulty concentrating, catastrophic expectations of failure, negative thinking, feelings of inadequacy & victimization, selfcondemnation, frustration and constant comparison with peers.

50

• Behavioral: Poor concentration, going blank, freezing, confusion, breathlessness, loss of appetite & sleep, excessive eating, refusing to take the test, excessive crying, screaming, hitting, sweating & fidgeting to list a few. Exam anxiety can be a vicious cycle. After experiencing exam anxiety on one exam, the student may become so fearful of it happening again they become increasingly more anxious and upset. WHAT CAN YOU DO The critical period just before and during the exams: The Three A’s- Accept, Acknowledge and Assure: Your child is genuinely frightened. Please do not trivialise his feelings. Firstly accept the situation yourself and then acknowledge to the child that you understand what s/he is going through. Assure and reassure your child that everything is going to be fine. Keep the Atmosphere Light and Positive: Keeping the atmosphere light and humorous actually yields better performance. Your anxiety is absorbed and reflected by the child, the same is true if you are calm, collected and confident. “It’s Not the End Of The World” Talk: If your children are showing symptoms of exam anxiety, you need to sit down

March 2016 | Volume1 Issue 11 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

patiently and reassure them that though the exam is important, it is not the end of the world. Show Confidence In Your Child: Your child is very tuned to your feelings. Believing in them unconditionally and without comparisons, helps instil confidence in them. Breathe Together: If your child is feeling breathless, you should practice slow and deep breathing with them until they return to their normal breathing. Short Breaks - Watch Something Funny: It is imperative to take short breaks in between revisions. Watching something humorous or engaging in a fun physical activity will boost productivity and reduce anxiety Warm Water Bath: Helps calm the nerves Good Diet: Small portions at short intervals of around two hours are recommended. Teach Your Child Relaxation Exercises: Your child may tense up during the exam. Teach him a few relaxation exercises to do during the exam. Tell them to put their pen down. Breathe slowly. Move their head slowly from side to side/ up and down. Shake their arms, push shoulders backwards, and shrug. These exercises help loosen up and relieve tension Sipping On Juice: If your child feels lightheaded during the exam, ask him to sip on a tangy juice with some salt added to it. These issues take time but will be resolved. Happy Parenting.

VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): This month is made for you! Allow yourself to work, play and relate according to your own preferences. Try not to engage in fear about others’ feelings, because all is well. Everybody is okay. Good health needs you to be watchful about your diet and finances can take a bit of self-indulgence on your part, if possible. LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

You have an excellent tool with which you can handle everybody else getting their way above you… and it is Information. It will stand you in very good stead, this month. Be patient and gather all the dirt. Your time for gardening will come. Engage in regularity for good health and better finances.
