Monsoon Memories
ome of our best childhood memories are related to how much fun we had in the rains. A reason to stay out of the house getting drenched, splashing water on the streets, finding puddles to jump on and for some (from the paper-generation) even making the best paperboat that sails the flooded neighborhood roads. For kids the clogged drains with the steadily rising water levels was an add-on bonus to their already drenched selves. The clothes, the hair, the after-effects..none were the concerns of these memory building monsoon outdoor activities. The month of June saw some crazy out pours of monsoon in our city Mumbai. Suddenly everyone had the best view outside their windowsthe rains. I sat down sipping my regular cup of chai on one of the beautiful rainy days looking outside my apartment window. Beautiful breeze, the nice earthy smell, tiny drops of rain hitting the face..you all know what I am talking about. I looked down the society building where the kids usually play football or ride their bicycles or just chill in the evening play-hours. There were none to be seen down there in this beautiful moment. “Where better could they be making their childhood memories at this time?�, I asked myself.

I believe I tweeted about the same thing at that moment. And while I was on twitter I also discovered countless tweets on the rains and cameraphone pictures of the experiences of the rains. Most of them taken from their cars or their apartment-windows or from some safe area of shade. There were so many memories being made and shared at that very moment in an instant with so many other people. Or were they just a passing #hashtag that will be lost in the timeline of our internet-generation? Are we creating memories that will be remembered simply by closing our eyes and giving a childlike smile on our faces? If not, then we need to. Monsoons are better felt when the raindrops touch our faces. A cup of chai and pakodas are best enjoyed at this time when our bodies are shivering due to the drenched fun we just experienced in the open. Monsoons are not just for the best-clicked moments. They are the time when some of the best memories are made.

W
hen I was a little girl my mother would dress me up in the best of outfits - colorful frocks, fancy socks & shoes, hair-bands & clips. The dance of the colors and jingles of the accessories would make me shine. She would dress me up like her doll with all the detailing; even when I would spoil it all in an hour. She too was very stylish when she was young which was apparent from her pictures from her yesteryears. Very meticulous in her dressing, well kept hair and harmonizing colors would make her look so polished! But as I grew up I noticed all that faded away and I always wondered, what happened to her? Why doesn’t she take care of herself anymore? Because I had never seen her looking that way like in those photographs. And I never asked her either. The guilt still stings me when I remember, as a teen, not willing to take her along anywhere. Which every child feels about their parent/s when in their “teens.” Now, that I am married I am able to relate, it’s the hoard of responsibilities that must have crept into the time for taking care of her. And raising two children would obviously not be a cake walk. Also keeping up with the trends of the changing world would have been difficult for her. Clearly, the time has changed and so have trends and mind sets. Women are much more conscious about the way they look. But women, my mother’s age, who have never done it need some assistance which is the reason for writing this article. So here are few ways you can help your mother create a perfect wardrobe for her. She will feel much more confident about herself.

The points listed here are applicable to both western outfits and the ethnic ones. Listed are the 7 point to follow: BEGIN WITH “NEUTRAL” COLORS So, wardrobe neutral colors are dulled or muted tones of every hue (color). If it’s bright, it doesn’t fall in this category. These colors contain equal amount of warm & cool hue, hence they look attractive on most people. These are all solid colors. Some of which are: navy blue, burgundy, brown, tan, ivory, taupe, olive green, teal and plum. The beauty of these colors is they are less intense and easy to co-ordinate with a large variety of other colors. They do not attract a lot of attention to themselves. They work as background on which one can add accent/bright colors in form of duppattas, 3rd layer, accessories, handbags or footwear. They are subtle communicators, allowing widest range of moods, occasions and personality traits. They are also affordable by everyone; as many say “Good taste is hardly a matter of money.”

RELY ON THE “CLASSICS” STYLE Plain, solid color fabrics provide a foundation for your wardrobe but don’t stop here. You can count on classic patterns too. They are the best to begin with. Classics are timeless & elegant styles that seem to be always available and in style. Figures in this pattern are small or medium in scale but never large. They are usually available in wardrobe neutrals, allowing them to combine easily with wide range of other clothing colors. Some of the classic styles are - polka dots, chevron, argyle, animal print, floral, plaids, paisley and more. Classic patterns are flexible and dynamic. They are always received well by everyone. Its prints often offer self-expression, fun, sophistication and style. HOW ABOUT A LAYER Layering is the key to most body variations. Layering provides maximum versatility and insulating effect. It leads to discover style, individuality and adds exciting interest in a wardrobe. Some garments that fall in this category are: Pull-over, sweat-shirt, cardigan, duster, sweater, vest, jackets, coat, shawl, scarves and more. An additional layer helps camouflage body bulges or figure variations you don’t want others to focus on. Without attracting attention to the body, you will likely feel more relaxed and less conscious; while giving slimming effect. A third layer, specifically a jacket (formal or informal) tends to add authority to the visual image. Doesn’t matter whether it is a kurta + tailored ethnic jacket or one piece dress + jacket, it all works equally well.

While solids and classics help you build a basic, versatile, classy wardrobe – keeping with the trends adds zing or liveliness. Trends are short-lived and they often appear and disappear in the market. They are offbeat prints/patterns or bold colors that catch attention for a while but perishes as soon as the next style hits the market. Some examples of the trends are – neon colors, crop tops, Jodhpur pants, harems, abstract artistic patterns, digital prints, pop-culture prints – hearts, animals, stars, lips etc. It’s a wonderful way of updating the wardrobe. Few of these are enough to re-energize the entire wardrobe. Having a variety of the trends is recommended to individuals in a creative field or those who have a busy social life.
Mom’s are usually on the run most of the days. To help them here are few tips to get them ready in less than 5 minutes: A moisturizer + sunscreen to protect the skin from damage or a BB/CC cream (with moisturizer & sunscreen) works great to protect and even out the skin. During important occasions she may be clueless as to what more to do. Because, usually, due to irregular sleeping patterns, your mom would have developed dark circles. So show her to use a concealer to even out the dark circles &blemishes. Then apply any foundation (best for her skin type) which is best for a natural glowing look. Also, buy her a red lipstick – it empowers and brings in confidence to a woman while making her feel in-charge. No kajal (only boosts darkcircles) but teach how to apply a classic and a winged liner in style. Note: A regime of cleansing, toning, moisturizing is a must – twice a day. Using the right products is very vital. This will already keep the skin fresh all day and will allow skin to recoup overnight.

A CLASSY HANDBAG All of us women, we have a personal relation with our handbags. We often stuff all the things we will need during the day in that bag when away from home. It is a part of our personal style. So it is very important to buy her the right handbag. Depending on her usage and amount of things she carries – buy her the right size (not too small/ big than her own body size). And to begin with one of the neutral colors work best as they will go along with anything and everything. TAKE HER TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD Last but not the least - wedges, kitten heals work best. onsoon time, whilst you are indoors, tends to bring a very big smile on most faces. A combination of a masala chai and pakodas in the monsoons seems to be a universal favorite for all of us, no matter what we call a pakoda in different parts of India. Sitting by the window sill, and watching the rain splash across the sky, is also a great time to think about your life and your finances, with a fresh perspective. Just like the rains seem to bring a fresh coat of paint all over by cleaning up the accumulated grime and dust, it is also critical to look at your finances with a fresh perspective. So here’s our quick guide on thinking about your financial life with a fresh perspective, as you sip some steaming chai in the Baarish. Clearly list out the goals, both long term and short term When you were younger, you had the option of saving without any particular goal in mind. Just the fact that you were saving put you ahead of others who spent all their money. Suddenly, there are now a whole lot of financial goals to think about - education for your children, their marriages, and annual holidays, and of course regular day to

day expenses. List each ofy our goals. Put numbers to each of these goals Since each of these goals could have different meanings to different individuals. For e.g. buying a house in Andheri may be different in terms of buying a similar home in Borivali or Bandra, it is critical to put a number to each of these goals basis your own expectations. You may need to seek help from a financial planner to get a better idea of some of these numbers and the impact of inflation on each of these costs. Prioritize your goals You will probably find that achieving all your goals may not be possible, so a process of prioritization may need to be undertaken. Try to achieve a balance between short term and longterm goals. Too often excessive focus on short-term goals or any one of the goals tends to compromise your overall financial well being. For example, over stretching yourself on your residential home purchase and its interiors could result in a compromise of your child’s education or your own retirement.

Don’t forget the risks Current lifestyles could expose
you to health risks, life threatening or otherwise. Ensure that you have adequate life and health cover to insure your risks. Buying them early increases the chances of getting them cheaper as well as when you are in a good state of health. The gap between needs and funds can always be funded by insurance. Diversify your portfolio Use a combination of financial instruments - stocks/equity mutual funds, bonds, precious metals, real estate and bank deposits in line with your financial goal requirements and risk appetite. Put the plan into action Ensure that you put your financial plan in to action and monitor and review it regularly. Too many plans end up remaining just that - plans. Come rainy season, problems of hair fall, dandruff and lifeless, worn out, brittle hair start. Here are a few tips to ensure that your hair stays happy and fresh this monsoon. Wash Hair and Scalp Frequently This tip sounds counter-intuitive looking at all the wetness around. The reality is, as the humidity soars and the hair gets wet frequently, we tend to reduce the frequency of shampooing and conditioning. This actually is detrimental to your scalp and hair. As the dead skin builds up, fungus and other microbes multiply on the scalp, leading to dandruff. Also, the environmental pollutants and dirt coming down with the rain are not washed off, increasing toxic build-up. All these increase the chances of wear and tear and brittleness. A good practice is to wash the scalp and hair at least alternate days using a mild shampoo. You may shampoo daily if you are exposed to rain water daily. Again avoid very hot water, as it will increase dehydration of hair. Use only lukewarm water. Condition them well Use a gentle conditioner after each shampoo. Too thick conditioner and the hair may go limp. If the hair is already getting brittle and worn-out, use a hair mask containing natural

fruit and aromatic oil extracts. Apply the mask instead of your conditioner, leave it on for 5-10 minutes and rinse off. Avoid oiling during monsoons Oil clogs the pores increasing the chances of dandruff and itching. Also the quantity of shampoo required to wash off the oil leaves the hair dry and frizzy. If you cant avoid hair oils, use only natural oils like coconut, olive or almond oil, avoid perfumed oils and mineral oils. Use the natural oils in very small quantities, applying mostly on the hair and not on the scalp. Groom your hair right Change your hair grooming practices in monsoon. Drink that hot tea but avoid heating your hair - i.e. avoid blow-drying in hot mode as well as hot ironing. Also avoid brushing wet hair. All these may weaken the hair further. Use dryers in cold mode, wide toothed comb - preferably wooden, to detangle the hair, Avoid / tone down the hair styling products They make the hair limp and clog the pores giving rise to dandruff and microbial growth. Pure aloe-Vera gel can be a good option instead. Use anti-microbial shampoo, if you already have dandruff / itching / boils Apply it with the pulp of fingers and leave it on for at least 5 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat at least 2-3 times a week. For severe or resistant dandruff, you may need further treatment and it is advisable to consult your hair doctor for it. Eat hair-wellness diet Diet containing Zinc, anti-oxidants and proteins help in keeping the hair healthy in monsoon. Ensure one helping of sprouts sprouted moong, chana, soaked methi seeds, wheat germs along with 4 almonds or 3 walnuts daily. Drink at least 2 liters of water daily This is very important as it helps carrying the nutrients to the hair roots. In addition, it prevents dehydration of hair. Follow these simple tips and let your hair be happy this monsoon.

Fortunately, it doesn’t matter if you’re 20 or 60 - feeling fit and aging well can be a reality with the right mindset and proper exercise and nutrition. Tavis Piattoly is a sports dietitian, expert nutritionist and co-founder of My Sports Dietitian. He lends his expert insight into how people of three different age groups can feel fit, healthy and happy:
Young adults - up to age 30 Starting a career, getting married, buying a home - these are just a few big life events people in this age category often experience. It also means less time to focus on fitness, and often an increase in unhealthy eating on the go. Physical activity: Piattoly suggests young adults do what they enjoy most, fitting it in on a regular basis. “Any form of physical exercise and exertion is beneficial for the cardiovascular system, but adults under 30 usually like sporting events,” he says. “This is the age where former athletes or very active post-graduates

are still looking to play a sport for fun.” Nutrition: “The metabolic rate of this age group is declining, so they can’t live on fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner like they did in college,” Piattoly says. “It’s time to clean up the diet and make smarter choices such as reducing sugar intake and avoiding fast food as much as possible. Prevention should be the focus.” Supplements: Piattoly says a multivitamin, Nordic Naturals fish oil and probiotic are a must.
Middle age - 30 to 50 In this age bracket, regular checkups with a physician are important to test for common conditions like high blood pressure. The stress of having children and growing a career can take a toll. Eating out due to lack of time becomes common and can cause weight gain. recommended for those individuals who are looking to balance stress.” Nutrition: “It’s important to eat smaller more frequent meals throughout the day, such as every three to four hours, and to make sure a source of lean protein is included at every meal and snack,” Piattoly says. “Protein is more thermogenic than fat and carbohydrates, so your body burns more calories when consuming protein.” Supplements: In addition to all the supplements recommended for the young adult group, Piattoly suggests vitamin D and turmeric extract, a great natural anti-inflammatory agent, for 30 to 50-year-olds.
Boomers - 50 plus People of this age are concerned with their health and risk for disease due to family history or lifestyle factors from their youth. Additionally, progressive loss of muscle mass and weaker bones increases risk for injury. Physical activity: Piattoly says regular strength training three to five days per week prevents the progression of muscle loss
and maintains good bone strength to prevent falls. “For cardiovascular-related exercises, it is important to do what you enjoy as you are more likely to stay motivated and consistent,” he says. “You can still participate in cardiovascular-related sports like tennis and basketball. For lower-impact sports that are easier on the joints, I like swimming and cycling.” Nutrition: “Since the immune system is not as strong as it once was for this age group, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is key, such as five to 10 servings per day,” Piattoly says. “Protein is also a critical nutrient for the preservation of muscle mass. I usually recommend making a smoothie or shake at least once a day, which can include protein powder, fruit and some veggies.” Supplements: “For heart and brain health, I’m a big fan of omega-3 fish oil, particularly from Nordic Naturals. They make triglyceride form fish oil, which is the optimal form for absorption,” says Piattoly. “Fish oil also supports joint mobility and healthy immunity.” Additionally, a vitamin D supplement for bone health and, potentially, calcium for osteoporosis, and creatine to reduce the risk of age-related muscle decline are all worthwhile considerations.

Our food expert Viketa Anand and Myself meet chef GautamGupte over breakfast at Indigo Deli Andheri west. He comes across as a person who is simple, modest and very passionate about his job. He has been with Indigo Deli for seven years now. We dig into the very popular Egg Benedict and Braised Lamb Ragout as we talk about his journey.
Q. Tell us a little about your background.
A. I passed out of Anjuman Islam College in Mumbai CST in 96. Ever since I have been in this industry. I was with Radha Krishna offshore. They do catering for rigs in oceans, platforms..that was my first job. Then I trained at LeelaKempinski as a commi. After that I was with Carnival Cruise Lines in the US for two years. Then I worked in different restaurants. I have been working with Indigo Deli for the last seven years.
Q. What changes have you brought to Indigo Deli in the last seven years ? The most important thing I have done is to maintain the standard that had been given to me to take care off. Be it the quality of the food, the ingredients, right from the green chili to the kinds of meat we get..
Q. ..but a chain like Indigo Deli, do you not have a standard vendor, a
standard supplier.. We do. The problem is the market..the quality of the vegetables etc.. they vary. Like if I want to make a tomato sauce I need to have the ripest tomatoes. But sometimes they give us raw tomatoes. The fish which comes to us..we want them fresh but sometimes they will try and mix a few fishes which are stale..
Q. And in the food industry maintaining the standard is the toughest.
Yea. And also being consistent with the food. That is one thing I have done!
Q. The most unusual ingredient you have ever used.
Truffles. Truffles is something I used here for the first time in my life. It is a delicacy. It is not available everywhere because it is very expensive. We used to put it in a few of our dishes. But we now term it as 86. That means not available (laughs).
Q. A chef who inspires you and why ?
It is my executive chef, Jaydeep Mukherjee. He has been my mentor here. Together we started the kitchen here in 2008. Here cooking is a science. The kind of exposure I have got here has been phenomenal.

. Smell, texture, presentation, taste. In what percentages do they combine to make a great dish? Taste – 50% . Presentation – 30%.Texture – 10%.Smell – 10%.
Q. Which city in India has the best food scene ? Why ?
Delhi is one. In fact we have opened up a branch of Indigo Deli there. Amritsar. The kulchechole in Amritsar..nothing can beat that ! The main thing is the water. It gives all the taste…

other branches ? One thing that sets this outlet apart is the personal touch. There are guests who only call me to take their order. Then we have a lot of celebrities coming here.
Q. You may be traveling global but you are always living local. What does that mean to you? I do not travel often but I am glad the rains are here .. they have helped the weather.
Q. What is the difference between a great cook and a good cook?
Passion ! The fire in your belly.To take each and every day as a challenge and try to learn something. That is what will set you apart from a good or average cook. Because there is a lot of sacrifice. We do not have any social life. We do not enjoy any festivals. Weekends we spend here.
Q. What is it about Indigo Deli that has kept it going strong for ten years? Great food. Service. Ambience.Warmth and personal attention.
Q. Your favorite hangout spots in Andheri West ?
umm.. The Starbucks at Infiniti Mall. Sometimes I go there. Two poached eggs with ham on an English muffin (With hollandaise sauce and hash browns)

Quick nourishing & extremely filling homemade Paratha to relish in the monsoons. Enjoy the scintillating monsoons with healthy home – made vegetable parathas…they are easy to make, and yummy to eat. Anyone can make them…don’t need a chef’s degree.
PYAZ KE PARATHA Ingredients 2 large Onions,finely chopped. Spices – Salt, Red pepper powder, dhania powder, amchoor 2 cups of gehun aata,kneaded into a soft round ball,smoothened with a little oil. 2x Green chillies (finely chopped) Coriander leaves (finely chopped). Oil or ghee for cooking. Method Add all spices to chopped onions, and divide into 6 small portions. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll out one into a 3 inch diameter. Add the mixture and fold the edges of the roti. Add a little dry flour and roll the parathas into a desired diameter. Cook the paratha on a girdle/non-stick open pan on medium flame using cooking oil or pure ghee till both the sides are golden brown in colour. Serve with raita, pickles, salad or any one of these

Spices – Salt, Red pepper and amchur powder. 2 x Green chillies (finely chopped) Coriander leaves (finely chopped) Method Add the 3 dry spices and greens to the grated cauliflower and mix well. Heat an open pan and add few drops of cooking oil. Add the cauliflower mix to the pan and sauté for a bit, till it takes on a semicooked texture. Remove the mixture and keep aside to cool. Divide the mixture into 6 well rounded portions. Now divide the dough into 6 equal portions,and roll out one into 3 inch diameter. Add the mixture and fold the edges of the roti,now add a little dry flour and roll the paratha into a desired diameter. Cook the paratha on a girdle non-stick open pan on a medium flame using cooking oil or pure ghee till both sides are golden brown in colour.

Spices – Salt,Red pepper and amchur powder. 2xGreen chillies(finely chopped) Coriander leaves (finely chopped) Method Add the 3 dry spices and greens to the grated radish and mix well. Heat in an open pan and add few drops of cooking oil. Add the radish mix to the pan and sauté for a bit till it takes on a semi-cooked texture. Remove the mixture and keep aside to cool. Divide the mixture into 6 well rounded portions. Now divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll out one into 3inch diameter. Add the mixture and fold the edges of the roti, now add a little dry flour and roll the paratha into a desired diameter. Cook the paratha on a girdle non-stick open pan on a medium flame,using cooking oil or pure ghee till both sides are golden brown in colour. Serve with raita, pickles, salad or any one of these. Always use a flat spatula to cook the paratha,and turn the sides slowly.

Ingredients For the dough (makes 6 parathas) 2 cups whole wheat flour (gehun ka aata) A pinch of salt Knead into smooth not so soft dough so that stuffing does not escape. Keep dough aside for 10/15 mins covered with soft wet cloth or keep in fridge for 5 mins. For stuffings : Aloo parathas – 4 boiled potatoes, cooled and peeled and mashed. Spices – Salt, Red pepper powder, dhania powder, amchoor, chaat masala. Add Ons - 2 green chillies finely chopped, few springs of coriander leaves finely chopped. Medium - Oil or ghee for cooking.
RAJMA MASALA Ingredients 1+1/2 cups Rajma soaked overnight and pressurecooked with a piece of ginger till soft. Keep the water for cooking. 3 large tomatoes. Blend with: 2 tbsp of cooked rajma 1 large onion sliced thin 1 tsp jeera whole 2 pinches of Hing 1 tsp coriander powder 2 tsp kashmiri chili powder 1 tsp garam masala or tandoori masala 1 tsp gng paste A few kadipattas (optional) 1 tbsp kasuri methi 2 tbsp of ghee

Method Fry jeera n ginger paste and kadi-patta in ghee till the jeera splutters. Add the onions till translucent. Add hing. Add the tomatoes n rajma blend. Add the masalas chilli powder coriander powder. Cook for a few mins. Add kasurimethi. Add the cooked rajma. Simmer for 15-20 mins. Done. Now here you can also add 1 tbsp cream. The gravy becomes rich and creamier. We have blended some rajma with the tomatoes so the gravy should be thick. We have not added water. But if the gravy is very thick you may use the rajma boiled water. Some people also add 1/2 tsp of sugar. You may if you like. I don’t. Best eaten with steamed rice. I like ghee or butter rice. Can also be eaten with paranthas. Eat n enjoy!
LOTUS ROOT (BHEE) & POTATOES WITH SWEET SAFFRON RICE Ingredients & Method Sweet Saffron Rice Cook 1 cup rice as normal. Add 3-4 tsps sugar with some saffron to get a yellow hue and the wonderful flavor of saffron. Add 1 tsp ghee. It does turn a bit sticky, but tastes yum. Garnish with chopped pistas or slivered almonds. Lotus Root (Bhee) 250gms Wash, peel, cut into thin slices at a slant. Don’t cut them straight or they turn stringy. Boil them till they turn soft but with some bite. Not too softy. As we are making seyalbhee, it means loads of onions in it. Chop 2 large onions and 2 medium tomatoes and sauté in 2 tbsp ghee with 2 tsp ginger paste, 1 tsp turmeric, 2 tsp red chili powder, 2 tsp garam masala, 2tspkasurimethi. Cover and simmer for 15 mins. Remember we are only looking for the tomatoes to cook and blend, we still want loads of onions to be seen. So cook till the onions are soft but don’t disappear. Simple tasty method of cooking Bhee. Q&A Deepak Ramola with
Deepak Ramola is a young man who wears many hats. A lyricist, a poet, a scriptwriter and script analyst. He is a guest faculty and teacher in several schools and colleges. He is also the founder and artistic director of Project FUEL. FUEL stands for ‘Forward the Understanding of Every life Lesson’. We ask him what is a life lesson. Deepak: I grew up in Dehradun. I saw my mother who had never gone to school knowing so much about life and about things. So I said this lady has not read world literature, or studied philosophy, or tallied balance sheets but she runs the entire house, guides us in our lowest of times. I asked my mother how she did all this. She said she did not go to school but she was learning from life. Initially I thought it was ridiculous because if she is learning from living, then everyone who is living must be learning something. This thought stayed with me. I was also a very curious child. I would ask people ‘Hey, what’s your life lesson?’ or what is the greatest piece of advice you can give me? I asked people at weddings, at functions, people who were invited home for dinner. I used to write down these life lessons in the back pages of my diary. Every time I got low in life, every time I faced a problem, I went to that diary and read. Invariably, I found a lesson from someone’s life that related to my context and the situation I was in.

But what is a life lesson? When I ask people what is your life lesson they say we do not have one. But that is not true. One gives suggestions and advices all the time to loved ones. The piece of advice, the word of comfort, the solution to a problem that we offer in our day to day lives are our life lessons because we pass them on authenticated by our own story. But I say to people if you were to die in the next five minutes and you were to share one advice with your loved ones what would you say? And whatever you say or choose to say is your life lesson. It can be as simple as ‘drink a lot of water’.
Q Has a life lesson helped you in your own life? How do
you teach people using life lessons under Project FUEL? Yes. ‘Own your story’ is a life lesson that was given to me by a friend who saw me in school being bullied for my voice. I had a very feminine voice I think…it still probably sounds like that on the phone. So I was dealing with this problem when a friend of mine told me do not worry about all of that. Own your story. It means be proud of who you are. What am I least proud of? Maybe my voice. I wanted to change it, add a base …but nothing worked. So I felt rather than trying to shun it,I should rather make peace with it and own it. The day I was proud of that, everything fell in place. I started having more fun when someone said ‘oh you sound like a kid or a girl’, I actually said yea, that is true. I felt that everyone knew my story and it is so easy to have fun if everyone knows your story and you are not offended by it. Those three words ‘Own your story’ liberated me to participate in debate competitions, be a voice over artist, to open Project FUEL.

All the life lessons I have collected, I go through them and then design those life lessons into do-able activities, theatre, poetry, creative writing and performance art. I conduct life skills workshops. I have been doing this since I was seventeen years old. So I have taught more than twenty five thousand people. The idea is that what you have learnt from your life someone else also gets to benefit from it in another part of the country by doing a practical exercise and not just reading it as a quote in the morning newspaper. People also relate to the stories that these life lessons come from.
Q How old must one be to have a life lesson?
Just be able to talk I think.. In terms of the Project FUEL journey, I would say the youngest person who has given us a life lesson is five years old. He said ‘when you are done using the jar remember to close the lid’.

always living local. What does that mean to you? It means the essence of our being lies in being connected to our roots.

What are women and girls doing to preserve their own safety? 36

n the wake of the Delhi Nirbhaya disaster case, a sad hush had spread all over Mumbai city. December 2012 became a black mark in the history of Indian democracy. Is the world only for men? Of the men? Why should women be forced to live in constant fear of being mauled, or teased, or stared at, or stalked or battered? The outcry continues as newspapers are flooded with more and more cases and case – histories of such atrocities. Besides asking the governing bodies what they are doing, and cursing the Police department for not preserving safety of women and girls properly, there is a huge question before us and that is, what are women and girls doing to preserve their own safety? Safety begins at home. Little girls are brought up with so much love and care, and as they grow up suddenly their world changes around. They realise they have to be aware of their surroundings at all times, not talk to strangers, or move outside their own given environment without informing the family. However, inspite of all the care that one generally takes, there is no guarantee for your safety and security in this society. I spoke to a few women and young girls of in and around Lokhandwala

Complex to know whether they feel safe in the area. While none of them reported ugly incidents of molestation or eveteasing in the area, there were most of the women and girls, who shared the unfortunate accounts when they are being stared at by idle men or boys on the street corners, men on two-wheelers, and also by auto-rickshaw drivers. Though there is no deterrent to such cases as it is taken as a case of idiotic behaviour that needs to be ignored, the fact remains that if any of these offenders act in an untowardly fashion they should be rebuked and put in their place immediately. Women and girls in Lokhandwala are certainly not afraid to go out in the streets, market-places, malls or even eating joints, and feel confident even if they were un-accompanied. Young girls insisted that they are fashion conscious and dress as they feel like, and do not let it bother them if someone stares or passes stupid comments, but if some stalks or makes them feel uncomfortable, they create a huge ruckus and make sure the advances of the perpetuator are openly met with a huge protest, enough to make him run for his life. However, just when I was concluding

my research on female safety, I came to know about a chain-snatching incidence that took place at the Lokhandwala Circle, in a broad daylight last month. A young man on a motor-bike snatched a thick chain from a passing woman, and fled even before she could realise the situation. Although she made a hue and cry, the thief had already escaped. Soon after this incident, I again spoke to few female residents of Lokhandwala and was shocked to know that such theft cases in a broad daylight have become regular in the area, and nothing has been done yet. It gave a new dimension to my research on female safety. “We can handle eve-teasing because they feel confident and self-assured, but what can one do if a thief or crook suddenly appears from nowhere and grabs your purse or mobile or jewelery and drives off in his two-wheeler? Reporting to the police has never helped getting back any lost property, and this loss is something that no woman or girl can handle,” says one of the female residents. A neighbour revealed an alarming disclosure. She was on her way to make a flat booking payment and
was crossing the road at the signal opposite Infinity mall. Suddenly she felt a tug on her shoulder, and before she knew it her handbag with a large amount of cash was ripped out of her clutch, and the assailant pushed her aside and ran off. She was so shocked that and dazed that she could not even cry for help. By the time she regained her composure, he was off into the narrow lanes. She went and complained at the Oshiwara Police Station. It’s been months, but there is no sign of getting the culprit caught. We need Police Patrol all the year round, not on certain days like Festivals and Processions. Maybe we will someday, mean while girls, be on the lookout…you are you hero.

The good news is that the only way to treat rains is with a pippin hot cup of masala tea and bhajiyas; but the better news is that Stains can be treated in various sure shot ways depending upon what stain it is… Unfortunately every stain reacts differently to various cleaning methods, so success is not always guaranteed in the first try. But don’t fear for Krish is here to fix the basic stains with basic things you find in your house!
MUD STAINS
OIL & GREASE
In case of a mud stain, allow it to dry (unlike any other stain) after it has completely dried scrape off the excess mud and treat the stain that persists.

Liquid detergent: Dab liquid detergent directly onto the stain. Let it soak properly for a while so that the mud particles loosen. Wash as normal. Repeat if the stain remains.

White chalk: A classroom product but quiet handy at home too… Rub the chalk on the stain. The chalk absorbs all the oil and grease. Stand it for some time depending on how strong the stain is. Wash normally. Repeat if necessary. Baking Soda: Apart from the cake it has a place in the laundry too! Add about 2tbl spoons of baking soda and equal amount of detergent powder to a liter of water in a vessel. Add the garment with the stain to it and bring to a boil on slow flame. Turn off the gas and let it cool. Rinse and was normally. Corn Starch: No coating only brushing... Rub a generous amount of corn starch on the oil stain Let it stand for about half-n-hour. Wash it normally.

White Vinegar: The multipurpose liquid… Cover the stain with white vinegar and rub it properly. Apply ¼ part water and ¾ part Baking soda directly to the stain and leave it overnight. Then soak and wash it as normal. Lemon: The citrus fruit refreshes the clothes too… Mix equal parts of lemon juice and water in a container. Add salt and baking soda to the above mix (careful while adding baking soda as it will react with the lemon) Using an old toothbrush, scrub the stained area. Wash it in warm water. Repeat if needed. Asprin: Not just relives you from headaches but also sweat stains… Crush two tablets of Asprin in a cup of warm water. Soak the stained part of the garment in the solution for 2-3 hrs. Wash normally.

et up at 5:30 AM. Check. I had placed two alarm clocks away from my mattress in two strategically different corners of the room. The sound of the alarms going off wakes only myself up. My heavily bearded roommate continues to sleep like a log. Initially one must do stuff like the ‘two alarms placed in the farthest corner’s of one’s room’ routine to gradually form a habit. I switch on the lights… it is still raining outside… non-stop over the last two days. I wash my face and eyes and slide open the window. I breathe in as my eyes close for two seconds. The cool fresh early morning oxygen you inhale will switch on all the lights and fans inside your brain. It charges your batteries and awakens your soul. And I just stay there, in that position for a few minutes..taking it all in.. breathing.. looking around. It has an out of the world soothing effect. My heavily bearded roommate turns in his mattress. I tip toe around him to go to the kitchen to start to prepare the essential morning cup of tea. It

is serenely quiet at home. Two other roommates sleep in the hall. The entire house all to myself for another two hours plus. Because sometimes you just want to be alone. You do not feel like talking to anybody. I slide the windows open further and watch it pouring as my tea simmers quietly on a low flame. The rains, they clean the city. The bark of the trees… the brown color looks livelier. The fading green on the leaves gets a fresh coat of paint. The yellow colored leaves are distinctly visible. The wet black crow with its ruffled feathers. The wet hen taking a stroll. You feel the poor fella’s need a towel. Imagine being under the shower for forty eight hours straight. That is how their faces look to me now. I see an elderly gentleman wearing a shirt with his sleeves folded in shorts and bathroom slippers holding one half-liter packet of milk and walking back home. I turn from the window and walk back to the kitchen passing pictures of Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar , Bruce Lee and
Jason Statham stuck on my wall. The tea is done. Voila! I pour myself a big cup of tea and walk back to the window in my room almost stepping on my sleeping roommate’s foot. Thank god I did not spill the tea. I stand at the window. School children, tiny tots packed in their colorful raincoats hold their guardian’s hands as they are taken to their respective school buses. That huge bulge on their backs being the all so important and very ‘light weighing’ school bag consisting of nine kilos of books, a water bottle and a tiffin box. The kids walk on the sides of the puddles of water in the middle of the road, sometimes brushing the water playfully with the tip of their shoes. The same black shoes all school kids have been wearing since India gained its Independence. The last three four months there has been so much work happening on the roads outside my house that I was afraid to open the windows. Not anymore! I finish my cup of tea. The last few sips give the most satisfaction.

Bringing Back My Beach

wo girls, Divya Unny (actor, journalist) and Rukhsana Tabassum (filmmaker) who strongly felt about a common problem got together to start the Bringing Back My Beach Campaign in Versova. Lack of a single stretch of clean sand, the Versova beach is filled with sandbags, plastic, paper, half eaten fruit, etc. There are not enough dustbins and toilets on the beach front and people choose to litter. They shared the idea of the Bringing Back My Beach Campaign on Facebook and many people responded to the initiative.

Why should people volunteer for this cause? All the people there were absolutely selfmotivated and really enthusiastic about the drive. Cleanliness! There’s really no other reason for anyone to volunteer.

What kind of support system does this initiative need? We need support from the BMC so we can install at least 15-20 extra dustbins on the beach entrances. We need to figure out sanitation process for the slum dwellers for long term. Apart from this we also need the residents who live around the beach to wake up and volunteer within the initiative in whatever capacity they can. After all it’s their backyard. We need to device a system which strictly forbids people from littering- it must be penalised heavily. There is a lot more that is needed. This is one in many steps that will bring about change.

How was the enthusiastic experience? It was an eye opening experience for all of us who turned up for the drive. We were about about the 30 people and in the process of collecting the waste from 7.30-10 am we realized that this was Q. How active is this initiative? drive We meet every Saturday, unless the weather a mammoth task. Picking up plastic and paper waste on one weekend isn’t going to solve the problem; it’s way bigger than that. What was nice however was that the slum kids who live on the beach joined us. The drive was a positive influence on them and that was encouraging for us as well.

et’s face it. Our children are born in a universe where Internet, smartphone and television are their life just like breathing. There are so many wonderful advantages of the digital world. Children explore the Internet for any query or interest they may have. They use it to align themselves with the happenings around the globe. They use it to do their projects, download music, movies, social networking, read the news and so much more. Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram etc. are a way of life. Children don’t bother the parents with their innumerable curious questions. Now they instantly turn to the ‘know it all Google uncle’. But along with Jekyll comes Hyde. Digital addiction, lack of concentration and physical activity, social withdrawal and inappropriate content viewing are getting to be common causes for counseling, particularly for the teenagers. The fact is that the digital childhood can do more good than harm if the parents can help their children create a balance. Here are some of the things to do: Be A Part Of Their Digital World Be genuinely engaged in their interests. Ask them to show you the latest sites that are being used. This will give you an idea of what your

child is doing. Also, be updated about the trends on the net so that you are not unaware of the parallel world the children live in. Set Time Limits Discuss with the child and amicably come to a timetable about the number of hours and the timings allowed on the digital arena. Budget The Digital Diet Mutually decide the amount of money to be spent each month on various plans and adhere to them. Be Aware Of Your Own Usage If you are constantly on the gadget, then your saying anything to your children won’t really matter. So first, be balanced then preach balance. Make The Real World Interesting Do not let the digital world take over the real world. It is imperative that the child has physical activities and social interaction in the real world.
It is an absolute must to engage in activities as a family whether it is playing a game or discussing the day. Spending quality time in the real universe takes away the pressure of image building in the digital world. Cyber Friends Being critical of your child making friends on the net will lead them to do so without informing you. So handle this situation sensitively. Misrepresentations Make the child aware that all that is on the Internet is not necessarily true. They should critically analyze information about sites, people and news that they come across on the net. Educate your child Talk to the child about the perils of sharing personal data, images and financial information on the net with some real examples. The most important step is to be involved in the child’s life on a day-to-day basis. On a lighter note, I feel that we are presently in the era of apps. Name anything and there is an app available for it. Soon there is going to be a movie called “Planet Of The Apps”. Till then, HAPPY PARENTING.

Parental influence: The kind of relationship a child has with his parent’s impacts the child’s attitudes to life and his future relationships. Parents to a great extent are responsible for the child’s emotional development. The personality of a child is influenced by the emotional atmosphere at home. A child is not a problem, but becomes one. Parents who love their children enormously and do their best cannot imagine what goes wrong. Communication with your child is of utmost importance. Very often as adults we are listening, but only partially, so we do not find the feelings or actual meaning behind the word communicated. We pick up mere words and automatically respond to them without picking up the feelings behind the words. A child’s feelings are very important and we as grownups pass over them very often. A mother may respond “you must have done something wrong.” Here the child is distressed that the mother responds in such a manner. Something like “you must have felt hurt” serves better. The situation as such is not so important to the child. But understanding his feelings is most important. If a child says, “my parents know exactly how I feel,” it is a real credit. Temper tantrums are frequent. Here the parent has to understand what message the child is communicating. Parents tend to get very upset. A temper tantrum would be an attention-seeking device. Adults tend to loose their composure and especially so in the presence of guests. The methods usually adopted to tackle this problem are to pacify or threaten the child. Pacifying

or bribing does not work. The child tends to repeat the story and the parent is only wasting their energy. Firmness in handling the child teaches the child “mother will not accept this nonsense.” Mother is very important to the child. Rewards should come as a surprise! Promises kept to a child and not kept can be very harmful. The child builds unrealistic expectations and if not realised can lead to very negative feelings of anger or revenge in the child towards the parents. Emotions have no logic. A child lives for the moment and therefore elaborate explanations have no real effect. To the child there are only two alternativesmother loves me or she doesn’t. Father cares for me or he doesn’t. The child’s mind usually does not reason things out. It is left at these 2 alternatives. Another aspect that is important is how we praise or criticize the child. It is always better to praise the action rather than the person. Criticism can be very destructive rather than constructive. Words like ‘clumsy’, ‘you stupid idiot’ etc. are used by adults. Tempers are very high, sometimes parents shout and scream like the child himself/herself. We, as parents, have first to learn to control ourselves. Very often a child has referred to his mother as a ‘crazy woman’ or a ‘fisherwoman’. Often parents tend to magnify small mistakes. If a child has lost a rubber a second time it is not a major catastrophe. But sometimes, “money does not grown on trees” is totally uncalled for.
Treat the child as an individual and not as a toy. Values are not taught to the child directly. They are inculcated through love and respect. The parents are models for the child. Children must start learning responsibility in relation to their eating, clothes, homework etc. often the mother does everything for the child and then expects him to do things himself. Indeed a wrong expectation. Dependency patterns in children make them inadequate and insecure adults. Every child goes through a stage where he tells lies or steals. This is because he feels the truth would be unacceptable to the parents. If you know your child is telling a lie, state the truth instead of asking questions. A question provokes a child into telling more lies. In the case of stealing, instead of preaching and telling him he will be punished by God, and that he has done something bad, it is much better and far simpler to say that it (what he stole) doesn’t belong to him and that he should give it back. It is of prime importance to build a child’s self-respect so that he can be an adequate, confident and secure individual.
