He always tried to provide the best of what he could – be it the best education, the best information, and most importantly, a feeling of safety and completeness, both emotionally and financially. On this occasion of Fathers Day, it is a time for all sons and daughters out there to take it up as their responsibility of their father. You can do this by planning for him and his finances. Here’s how you can do it!

DOES HE HAVE A PROVISION FOR A REGULAR INCOME POST RETIREMENT? For many, your father will be nearing retirement or may have already retired. Does he have enough to generate a regular income post retirement? If the answer is yes, help him plan it better, to generate a regular cash flow for him in a tax efficient manner. If the answer is no, then you can gift funds to your father which he can invest in his name, in case of a shortfall. If he is a senior citizen already, then he can invest in a senior citizen savings schemewhich gives a higher interest compared to most other options. He can also invest in a company Fixed Deposit (avoid lower rated companies even if they offer extra) or a bank Fixed Deposit.

You may also help him invest in Mutual Funds and then plan Systematic Withdrawal Plans (SWPs) out of it which can provide a regular stream of cash flow to him. Help him diversify his retirement income with a combination of interest, dividend and rental income, so that he is less exposed to single product risk in his retirement, and help him beat inflation. DOES HE HAVE AN ADEQUATE MEDICAL COVER? As age increases it gets difficult to get
a medical cover. If he already has one, ensure that the premium payments continue without fail. Just like he took care of your health when you were a child, you can build a medical fund for your father.
when you were young, and this is now critical for you to do. In addition, if he had any particular wish which never got fulfilled because he was busy providing for you, then you can create a goal for it.
He can make use of that money in the event of any medical emergency. Choose liquid instruments which can be withdrawn as and when needed without a lock-in. Do not use this fund for any other purpose what so ever!
Maybe that US vacation that never happened!
HELP HIM WITH HIS SUCCESSION PLAN. Remember that a will is a critical document, and ensure that all his nominations and a power of attorney are in place for unforeseen events. Insist on the will, even if it is an uncomfortable conversation. Remember he was made to have some uncomfortable conversations with you

THINGS WE
NEVER TELL OUR DAD I belong to a generation where fathers never said ‘I Love You’, not because they did not want to but because they rarely expressed love in words. They were always working for things that magically appeared for us.
“
They were hustling in the back-end for our future, that seemed so clear to us. We lived in a happy illusion because they never let reality hurt us. We learnt life lessons by observing you deal with situations and people. Sometimes we get so consumed in celebrating our own success that we forget the endless nights they stayed awake and restless while we slept peacefully. We kept complaining you never expressed love, but the fact is we did not make enough effort either.
that made us accept each other with more empathy.
Every time they set rules for us, we wanted to ferociously break them but as time progresses you realise how each of those boundaries defined your personality and values.
My father built me in a way that nothing could, he allowed me to dream without fear and love without expectations.

Fashion
“
Rules to Break by Priya Shah
Fashion is an evolving and ever changing field. Trends change every six months, leaving most individuals confused what to do next. Most of us try to look up for rules and have a difficult time following them, because not everyone has an extensive wardrobe. Believe it or not, most of those fashion rules are completely outdated and false! As someone who loves fashion but doesn’t believe in old-fashioned rules, I say it’s time to put some of these style myths to rest once and for all. As they say, rules are meant to be broken, here are few of them:
Dark color combinations have been a serious fashion no-no since before the beginning of time. But as a matter of fact, these colors look amazing and powerful when put together! navy blue, black, brown, maroon, olive, burgundy are a power color combo you must try! The key to work black and blue is making your outfit look planned. Pair rich blues with a true black, navy blues with camel brown, olive green with maroon so the eye can distinguish between the two colors. For a sleek and contrasting look, pair lighter browns with bold blacks. Nothing looks better than a black t-shirt, black jeans, and a brown jacket to finish off the look. Since these colors are dark and look alike, one could mark differences by playing with shape and textures. A structured faux-leather bomber over a silk navy dress highlights the details of both pieces—plus their difference in texture will add interesting dimension to the look. Accessories Need To Match the Outfit From the time I’ve been following fashion trends, I’ve always read accessories should always work together - belts, bags and shoes have to be the same color. But on a practical and more economical note, all accessories don’t need to be the same shade, texture or tone, where your bag DOES NOT have to match your outfit. There’s no need to get too “matching” all the time. In fact, doing so can create a stout and outdated look. This year, use your accessories to create a playful mix of colors and prints—this will add a modern twist and eye-catching appeal. By giving each its own moment to shine, you get can be more playful with your look. Make sure each piece plays well with others. Nothing needs to match, per se, but your accessories should run in the same color family and your prints should stay minimal. This reduces competition and avoids running the risk of clashing. Do Not Mix Prints Print mixing has been one of the most tried trends both in the streets and on the runway. Mixing
14
June 2016 | Volume 2 Issue 3 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)
different textures and patterns is a fabulous way to create more variety in your outfits, giving your outfit an interesting depth which is definitely a must if you want to take a more individualistic and personal approach to dressing. Trying to combine laid, stripes, polka dots and paisleys all together may be a bit too much, but usually a strategic and subtle combination of prints will be pretty and unexpected. The easiest way to begin mixing prints is to simply replace your solid colored garment with a monochromatic pattern in the same color. Once you’ve replaced a red top with red polka dot top, now try mixing two prints with one unifying color – match colors and not prints. Also, make sure size of print is the same. Do Not Mix Metals This rule basically says that you should never wear gold and silver jewelry together. But, we feel metal is the new neutral, and you can wear them with whatever you want. Of course, some people have a preference for one type of jewelry over the other. It’s okay to have a preference, but don’t ever think that you can’t wear what you want because it’s not “allowed”. Don’t be afraid to layer gold, silver and bronze bangles together, or wear silver flats when you have gold earrings on. The best way to create an easy and effortless look is by layering necklaces or stacking on an arm party. Blend pieces of varying widths and shades of silver and gold. The same goes for rings. If you’re feeling bold, add a little rose gold or pearl into the mix for extra contrast. It’s totally up to you and not wrong at all! Sneakers Are Only For Tracks Giving your feet a comfy break from heels doesn’t mean you have to downgrade your style. In fact, sneakers are all the rage right now. So, next time you head off to work or to have a little fun on the weekend, grab your sneaks out of your gym bag. They pair with almost any outfit to give off a cool, casual vibe everyone will admire. The trick to make them look awesome on you is to ditch the socks and wear your sneaks with crisp button-down, cropped pants! Sneaks look great with maxi dresses and skirts too.
DISCOVER YOUR HOOD WITH AIRBNB DISCOVER YOUR HOOD WITH AIRBNB Living Local is always looking for ways in which you can connect with your neighborhood better. And now we bring to you a unique way to introduce your hood to global travelers – by becoming hosts with Airbnb! It’s the easiest way to monetize your extra space and showcase it to an audience of millions. Whether you’re offering a seaside villa or an air mattress in the corner of your living room, you can list your space on Airbnb for free! We asked four hooders to share their experiences of being hosts. A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE Pratik, a host from Andheri hood says, “After travelling and using Airbnb in other countries, I liked the idea of living in someone’s house. Similarly, it is a pleasure hosting people and giving them a more local experience. I’ve also hosted people who come to the city for business, and welcomed wedding parties who like to live under one roof for the occasion. It’s a different experience every time.” “I’m a proud Airbnb host since June 2015. In the last couple of years, I have travelled to four cities in Europe and have always preferred to stay as an Airbnb guest as one gets to experience new places from a local perspective, with the advantage of meeting wonderful hosts,” shares Rishi, an Airbnb host from Khar hood. He adds, “Last year, I decided to host my studio apartment. I am thankful to Airbnb for providing people like us, such an amazing platform, to utilize our properties and meet amazing people from across the world. It’s a win-win situation for both the guests as well as hosts.”
LASTING FRIENDSHIPS Sunita and Ashok Jain, Airbnb host couple from Santacruz hood, tell us, “Two years ago, our son and daughter moved to other cities for work, and suddenly my husband and I found ourselves without company in our home. Last winter, we took a family vacation to Kerala, where my son booked an Airbnb house for us. That’s when he convinced us that we should try our hands at hosting.” She further adds, “This decision has turned out to be one of the best experiences of our lives. We have hosted travellers from far and wide – South America, UK, Australia, Ireland, Africa, USA and learned about their cultures.” With Airbnb you also get to build wonderful friendships. Sunita quips, “Of all the positives, the highlight of our experience has been the amazing friendships that we have made. My husband and I are travelling to the UK next month and our guests from the UK will be hosting us at their home! Good hospitality always comes around.” NEW PERSPECTIVES Bandra hooder and host Anushka says that while having guests over, they help her look at Mumbai in a new way. She tells us, “My first experience with Airbnb was in Paris. Along with a perfect location, we were pleased to have scored ourselves a sweet deal - 15 euros per day in the heart of Paris!” She began hosting since the start of the year and it has been smooth sailing so far. She gets to meet people from all over the world and interact with them
over a cup of tea. Anushka adds, “It is exciting to see how a new person (or if I may say outsider) views the city and also interesting to interact with them over what to visit and look out for. Reading reviews of my sunny room in Bandra is a big up since the apartment is located in a charming residential lane that is close to restaurants, bars and everything else that one may possibly need to visit in the suburb.” Sign up on www.livinglocal.com to know more and connect with your hood! Airbnb is inviting all you hooders to join this revolution! If you’re inspired and want to start hosting, give them a missed call on 8102247262 or go to www.airbnb.com/livinglocal.

EXPERT SPEAK 1. Hi. I have a lot of extra hair growth on my arms and legs. I have been waxing them for the past few years but I am getting a lot of ingrowth and marks. I also develop a rash sometimes after waxing. I want to know different options for safe hair removal. Please suggest!

2. Hi. I would like to improve my skin complexion. I have been travelling a lot since last month. My skin has tanned and is looking very dull and patchy. I have an oily skin but it has become dry of late. Could you advise me on how to take careof it?
Hi Varsha, This is a common issue faced by many young girls. Hormonal changes often lead to unwanted hair growth on face and body areas, ingrowths and rashes after threading or waxing. There are some temporary and permanent methods of hair reduction. The temporary measures include shaving, threading, plucking
and waxing. In threading and waxing, hair is pulled out from the root. So there is no hair growth for at least 3 weeks. But it can cause rashes and sensitive skin many times especially in cases of hormonal imbalance. Shaving the hair is a quick, easy and simple alternative if you are getting rashes and ingrowth after waxing. The only drawback is that the hair grows back quite fast as the hair is just shaved off from the top of the skin so one needs to shave quite often. Laser hair reduction works out well for people who want a more or less long term relief. The laser light specifically targets the hair root itself and weakens the root thereby reducing the

Pinky Luthra, 30, Ludhiana Hi Pinky, Summer is the time when a lot of people are travelling during their vacations. Sun exposure and sun damage is very common when we travel. Be it a beach holiday or the hilly mountains the sunrays can cause tan or sometimes even sunburn. The heat can make the skin dry and sensitive making the skin look dull, dark and patchy. Start using a sunscreen and water based moisturiser on a daily basis. Repeat the application of sunscreen every 3 to 4 hours. Start using a serum or cream containing Vitamin C along with hyaluronic acid twice a day. This will lighten your tan, hydrate the skin and brighten your complexion. Usually treatments like glycolic peels, fruit peels, laser toning or medifacials help in removing the tan effectively. Meanwhile once a week you can use a pack which contains orange juice, tomato juice or papaya along with a few drops of honey and curd. This will help in improving your complexion.
Got a question about your skin and didn’t know whom to ask? Please write in to mumbai@sakhiyaskinclinic.com and Dr. Sharmila Nayak would be happy to answer your queries.

How to Reverse Type 2 diabetes by Dr Lily Kiswani, MD. Endoscopic Surgery (Belgium) Nutritional Therapeutics (Stanford, UCSF, Vanderbilt)
Almost 20 per cent of people over the age of 65 have Type 2 diabetes. Diabetics have a lifestyle that doesn’t match their genetic needs; a change in their lifestyle and their diabetes problem usually goes away. I offer programs that have helped patients bring their blood sugar levels back to normal. Even patients on insulin, with advanced diabetic complications have become medicationfree and achieved normal blood sugar control. SO WHAT CHANGES HAVE HELPED REVERSE TYPE 2 DIABETES? There is no single choice and no magic bullet to correct this problem. But the combination of three activities is remarkably helpful:
THE ENERGY NEXT TRAVELS TO YOUR LIVER AND IS STORED AS LIVER FAT, PLUS CONVERTED INTO ARTERY CLOGGING TRIGLYCERIDES. AT SOME POINT, BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS JUMP INTO THE “HIGH BLOOD SUGAR ZONE”, AND YOUR BODY BECOMES INEFFECTIVE AT LOWERING BLOOD SUGAR AFTER YOU 1. Daily activity 2. Avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugars 3. Eating more smart foods ACTIVITY Daily activity is essential. You may wonder why I start with activity instead of food. Let’s start with what causes this problem in the first place. When you eat food, the food energy is absorbed as sugar (glucose). This becomes stored in your muscle cells as glycogen, available as energy for your next work out.
D
iabetes rates are skyrocketing. Complications lead to heart attacks, strokes, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, and memory loss. The #1 cause of death for people with diabetes is from cardiovascular disease.
18
June 2016 | Volume 2 Issue 3 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)
The problem is that if you keep eating, but you burn it, the muscle cells become overloaded with glycogen. Insulin pushes this glucose into muscle cells. When muscle cells shut their doors and don’t respond, your tissues become resistant to insulin’s message to store energy.
CLAIM YOUR HOOD at livinglocal.com
The energy next travels to your liver and is stored as liver fat, plus converted into artery clogging triglycerides. At some point, blood sugar levels jump into the “high blood sugar zone”, and your body becomes ineffective at lowering blood sugar after you eat. High blood sugar levels accelerate every aspect of aging—your brain shrinks, your arteries grow plaque, your cancer risk grows and your health falls apart. So if the first step to insulin resistance is excessive glycogen storage in muscle cells, then removing glycogen through exercise is an incredibly effective way to bring blood sugar regulation and your health back to normal. Most people need at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity every day to deplete sugar stored in muscle tissue.
AVOID REFINED CARBOHYDRATES & SUGAR. The second treatment is to decrease blood sugar from entering the blood stream. The simple way to do this is to avoid high glycemic load foods. Glycemic load refers to the amount of sugar that reaches your blood stream from one serving of a specific food. The simple way to avoid a jump in blood sugar levels is to eliminate all sugar, grains, and anything made with flour from your eating plan. WvA few other high glycemic load foods that should be avoided are: potatoes, bananas, dried fruit, and fruit juice. EAT MORE SMART FOODS So what should you eat? The focus is to
eat every day at least: • Five servings of smart fat (avocado, nuts, olive or nut oil, coconut products, dark chocolate, cold water fatty fish) • Five servings of clean protein (grassfed beef, cage-free and organic-fed poultry and eggs, wild fish, beans, organic soy products, and organic yogurt. • Ten servings of low-glycemic fiber (from vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and dark chocolate) • Plus, extra spices and herbs for flavor and to lower inflammation. The reality is that you can prevent and reverse Type 2 diabetes and also help your heart, brain, and waistline by adding smart foods and following these simple concepts every day. Dental perspectives A good dentist visualizes esthetics in relation to the patient and translates the visualization into an acceptable esthetic result.
Patient 1 had long upper lip which was cosmetically contoured (philtrum alteration with improvised length of laminates).
The success of his efforts depends upon his artistic ability, his power of observation and his experience. There are many dentofacial perspectives to consider for enhancing dental treatment:
Patient 2 had long bridge of nose which was cosmetically contoured and thus got best result along with improvised length of laminates.
• We concentrate on the dentofacial perspective considering the touch –ups to upper/lower lips and nose cartilage
PATIENT 1
• The deeper color lips compared with lighter colored teeth add interest to the teeth arrangement • The length of the upper lip varies from person to person and thus the extent of tooth exposure depends upon it. Men usually tend to have longer upper lip than females thus women have more upper teeth display than men.

AFTER
• Upper teeth display is more in young people and tends to decrease with increasing age and thus old people have more lower teeth display , because of loss of elasticity of the upper lip. • Aging also reduces tonicity of orofacial muscles thus resulting in formation of fold & grooves near chin, nose and lip region. • Shape and size of teeth are considered. Males tend to have wider teeth than women. • Size of lips varies from thin to full & thick and thus thin lip, taut lips should be provided with teeth which display boldness & dominance.
PATIENT 2
• Smile line is considered which can be normal, flat, eccentric or reversed smile. Here we will see two cases in which orofacial perspective were considered: Both the patients had come to our clinic with concern of less display of their upper front teeth. They were particular about esthetics or the appearance of their teeth. They were open to any and all recommendations related to helping them achieve their treatment goals.

rom running a fleet of restaurants and designing menus for airlines to curating cooking workshops and working on a movie, Chef Rohan has left no stone unturned Silver Beach Café, Nom Nom, Jantar Mantar, Copa, we’re sure you’ve visited at least one of these restaurants and enjoyed a delectable meal. But did you know that the common factor between these amazing restaurants is their star chef Rohan Dsouza. Started his culinary voyage at the tender age of 17, chef Rohan has come a long way from his summer internships at the kitchens of the Taj Holiday Village in Goa. He graduated from the Institute of Hotel Management, Hyderabad and moved on to acquire an NVQ level 3 certification in Kitchen and Larder at Southampton City College. He became wellacquainted with global cuisine after working on a cruise liner for 9 years. In 2010, chef Rohan opened his signature restaurant Pepper Café, in Bangalore. And from then on there has been no looking back! We met up with the chef from Andheri hood and enjoyed a great conversation accompanied by a delicious serving of their special chocolate pancakes.

At such a young age, you have done a lot of things! What keeps you going? We just have so many massive things lined up that it keeps me motivated. The USP of our brand is that we come up with boutique restaurants. It is a unique concept in itself. Each concept is new, non-repetitive with different ambiences and different audience. That is what keeps it exciting and I look forward to it.
You manage a fleet of restaurants! How do you manage this? It’s all about time management backed by good teams. If you know your subject well, it’s easy to manage.
You have also worked on a cruise liner. Tell us about that experience.
February 2016 | Volume1 Issue 10 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)
Those were the initial days of my career where I got a lot of exposure and it helped me build a strong foundation. Now if you throw me in any kitchen, I know I’ll survive because of the strength and pressure that we used to work under on the cruise. I gained a lot of invaluable experience from it.
I have to ask you this. How was it working under Marco Pierre White? Is he as intimidating as he comes across on TV? No, not at all! He’s a very calm person and just the opposite of what you see on TV. He is extremely down to earth. If you are selected in a Marco Pierre White team, you are definitely coming from a strong background. During his restaurant service, everything is very smooth and planned so there is no need for him to get worked up.
Was there anything you thought you wanted to do before you started cooking? I would have loved to be a pilot! In fact, I still want to pursue flying.
Is there a childhood comfort food that you crave? I think Goan food is the best in the universe!
As a restaurateur, how has the Indian food culture changed since the time you joined the industry? I moved back to India a few years ago and I’ve observed a drastic change in the industry starting from the culinary schools. Back then, we learnt only the basics such as pasta, sauces and the simple, standard global fare. Slowly, the industry started trending, started galloping. Indian palette started getting exposed to a lot of food. People started travelling a lot. Around 2006, the industry started opening up. The gap between the East and the West narrowed down. We have
almost matched up to them. Indians have got a very high range of cooking talent. If you put an Indian chef in an international kitchen, he’ll definitely shine among the others. This is because our palette is so diversified.
You’ve expanded your empire. What can we expect from you next? We have a lot on our plate in the coming months. Currently, we have three new restaurants launching soon. Ministry of Salad in Mumbai, The Lazy Goose in Australia and another one in Bandra. We are also working on a food based movie with Saif Ali Khan.
Pick your favorite dishes from your restaurants. I can’t pick from the 600 dishes that we make! But my leniency is towards seafood, especially crabs.

CHICKEN DUM BIRYANI INGREDIENTS 1kg Chicken Boneless cut small 1 cup Curd 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder 1 tsp Coriander Powder 1 tbsp Red Chilli Powder 2 tbsp Ghee 2 tbsp Special Masala Mix - grind a few peppercorns, star anise, saunf, cinnamon, green cardamom and cloves 2 large Onions - caramelized brown in 1 tbsp Ghee and add 1 tsp sugar 1 cup fresh coriander and mint 1 tbsp cooking oil Marinate the chicken for an hour (keep in fridge) in all the above ingredients. Keep some onions, coriander and mint for later. 2 cups Basmati rice soaked for 1 hour. Cook rice in 5 cups of water with a few sticks of cinnamon and a couple of star anise. Half cook the rice for about 5-7 minutes on high flame. Strain and keep aside.
MURGH KALI MIRCH Chicken with Black Pepper
METHOD In a thick bottomed deep cooker, take 1 tbsp of ghee and rub it all over the inside. Add the marinated chicken, spread it evenly. Now layer half the rice over it. Then add some onions, coriander and mint. Layer the remaining rice. And again on top add the onions, coriander and mint along with 1 tbsp of ghee. Here you can also add saffron mixed in a little milk for more flavor but particularly for the color it imparts. Cover the cooker with a flat lid, you may seal it with some dough or maybe cover the cooker with a cloth and then the lid. You may press it down with some weight. This process is called “Dum”. You keep the steam in to keep the flavors, plus the cooking of the half cooked rice on top. You start by keeping the cooker on high heat for 5 minutes then on medium heat for 5 minutess and then you keep a tawa (pan) on low heat and keep the cooker on top of it. This is done so the chicken dosen’t burn at the bottom till it cooks. Keep it on the pan on low flame for 25 mins. Let it rest for 10 mins. Make a simple raita to go with the biryani to keep the freshness and to balance the hotness of all the spices.
INGREDIENTS: 500gms Boneless cut small pieces 250gms Curds beaten 1 tbsp GnG paste 1 tsp Coriander powder 1 tsp Cumin powder 3 tsp Black pepper coarsely ground 2 tsp Garam masala powder 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder 15-20 Cashews paste 2 Medium Onions blended 4-5 Green chilies finely chopped 1 tbsp Ghee Salt METHOD: Marinate the chicken in curd, 1/2 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp garam masala and 2 tsp black pepper for at least an hour. In a thick bottomed pan, heat the ghee and fry the onions with the GnG paste and green chillies. When the onions change colour, add the masalas. Then add the marinated chicken. Cook on medium flame for 15 minutes. Keep stirring. Now, add the cashew paste. Mix well and simmer for 10-15 minutes covered on low flame. Depending on the thickness of the gravy you need adjust the water. The curd releases a lot of water, hence do not add more. For garnish, use few mint leaves, finely chopped coriander and 1 tsp of the black pepper. Serve this gravy with hot naans. with breads and some call for curry for rice. Improvise.

FOR A BETTER
NEIGHBOR“HOOD”

fter observing the extent of cleanliness abroad, Nipul Pau made it his mission to make India a better place to live in, starting with our local area by founding the Youth Club of Lokhandwala, and carrying out various successful campaigns. How many times have we complained about the lack of upkeep of our area, blaming the government for their incompetency? And how many of us have actually tried to solve the problems by doing something about them? Maybe, just a handful of people. Nipul Pau is one of them! During an earthquake in Kutch and Gujarat, Nipul and his wife met a social worker and helped people by providing them food and clothes. This inspired them give back to society even more and they started getting involved in doing small things for the community. Being backed with a huge friend circle and supporters, they decided to take local matters in their own hands. Nipul tells us, “We were always looking at an opportunity to do something for our local area. I was very disturbed by looking at the garbage thrown on roads by people. The Swachh Bharat Campaign started

by our Honourable Prime Minister opened doors for us to kickstart our organisation.” Youth Club of Lokhanwala’s first event of Swachta Abhiyan, cleaning of the entire Lokhandwala street, took place on 9th November 2014 which was a huge success and people participated wholeheartedly. From then on there was no looking back. “Our next event was held a week later in Lokhandwala market,” says Nipul. “We approached each and every shopkeeper to educate and encourage them to use a dust bin and keep the surroundings clean. Wherever we saw garbage accumulated outside the shop, we requested them to pick it up.” Their ways of conveying the message are quite bold and straightforward! He tells us, “At the food stalls when people threw garbage on the roads, we started whistling so the person was ashamed and disposed garbage in the bins. During this event, we also took up the issue of double parking in the streets of Lokhandwala. We requested people to move their cars and if they did not, we all clapped loudly for them. So out of embarrassment they started moving their car from double parking.” Their most recent campaign was called Scoop the Poop, an awareness campaign

for pet owners. Nipul elaborates, “The biggest issue is that most of the time, servants get the dogs for the walk and they are not bothered to clean after. We have seen even so called educated people also are least bothered to clean after the dog .We approached dog owners and explained to them why they must carry garbage bags, newspapers and scoop the dog poop.” Nipul is glad that their efforts don’t go in vain and he and his team of volunteers always get a lot of appreciation from people in the area which pushes them to do more. In the coming months, YCL is looking forward to tackling many issues like traffic and double parking, beggars in the Lokhandwala market, and the more serious issue of prostitution near Royal Arcade building, bridge near Runwal Towers, and Sundervan Complex. Nipul adds, “The other major event we are looking forward to is Lokhandwala Street which is based on the concept of Equal Streets.” He leaves us on a thought-provoking note. “We, the citizens of India, can make our country a better place to live by adopting civic sense and respecting each other. Do your part and we can have a better India!” Connect with the Youth Club of Lokhandwala via their Facebook page Swachh Bharat Swachh Lokhandwala to make your hood better!

paradise for designers and anyone who wants to put together a beautiful piece of garment, Manish Market at Four Bungalows is one of oldest shopping centres of the Andheri hood. The market is almost 30 years old and is a famous hub to shop for laces, dupattas, dress materials, jewellery and accessories.
IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO DESIGN YOUR NEXT WEDDING OR FESTIVAL OUTFIT, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU HEAD OVER TO MANISH MARKET. WE GUARANTEE YOU... The upper level of the market is occupied by the popular Tirumala fabric mega store which houses all kinds of fabrics and materials in a variety of options. In the lower level of the market, 90 per cent of the shops are rented which sell anything and everything garment related that you may need. The long line of tailors has been a constant here. You can watch the hard working embroideres creating intricate designs right in front of you! For all your laces and borders for your dresses and sarees, we recommend
checking out the shop called Saheli. It has been in the business for over 10 years now and they sell laces, borders, buttons, etc. in a variety of unique colours, prints, and designs. A lot of local designers too come to their store to source for these materials. We fell in love with their range of latkans which come in varied designs. We found some intricate ones which you’d not find at any other market! Many film actors, stylists and designers also come to Manish Market to scoop for rare finds! You can also shop for some western wear clothes from the stalls right outside the market. They might ask for a high price but make sure that you try to bargain and lower the price considerably. The market is also home to Gupta Travel Agency – the oldest travel agency in Andheri, since 1980. If you’re looking to design your next wedding or festival outfit, we highly recommend that you head over to Manish Market. We guarantee you wouldn’t be disappointed and will find something extraordinary, making your outfit oneof-a-kind! And if you get hungry while scouting for that perfect dress border, you can munch on a few sandwiches, frankies or sip on some tea or juice from the number of food stalls lined up outside.

“IN SIMPLE WORDS, ANTARDHWANI MEANS INNER RESONANCE. WE REALISED THAT IN AN URBAN SETTING, WE HAVE A SET OF COLLECTIVE WISDOM. WE KNOW THINGS BUT WE JUST DON’T TRY TO IMPLEMENT THEM
Sumisha has been able to achieve and understand these things through her own experiences in her personal life and her time in the army. She adds, “We do three things – we start with simplifying the clichés, then we educate people about applying the science and third, taking these two together people rediscover their own intelligence. They appreciate themselves more. They become more aware. We work on the basics and help people overcome their shortcomings. We help them connect to their child-like mind.”
to bed, early to rise,’ are true! All these things collectively form the foundation of a good life. Our aim is to reinvent the same methodology by giving a training which
RC
is more experiential. We simplify these clichés with the help of common applied science,” explains Sumisha.
Since she comes from an army background, her approach towards training is a precise combination of artistic tools, military ethics, and Indian classical philosophy putting her training systems into an all new league. Along with these tools, she also uses danceinduced movements with an objective
to resolve stereotypes and unconscious biases and empower people. The process of getting to the breakthrough level with people is slow and needs care and nurture. She curates and customises workshops according to the audience as the results vary from person to person, depending on what level they are at personally. Sumisha believes in the philosophy of leading by example and lives an artistic life exploring dance, yoga and meditation. “Antardhwani is all about increasing the resonance of the mind. It’s at a very intrinsic level. I might be propagating many things, but the idea is to become wise and apply your common sense in order to find your own solutions. You need to connect with yourself and find your inner harmony. I can only facilitate,” she concludes. For more information on Antardhwani, check their Facebook page.

Amritlal Soni, who runs this shop, migrated to Mumbai from Kutch, Gujarat almost 60 years ago. In 1977, he set up a scrap and raddi stall around the corner near Seven Bungalows. After earning a considerable amount, he decided to buy a small shop down the same lane where he has been selling used books ever since. Soniji is a humble and simple 58-yearold man. Every day he opens his shop at 9 in the morning, goes home for lunch in the afternoon and goes back to the shop till 9 at night. While his schedule may seem easygoing, he has paid his dues over the years and worked extremely hard to achieve quite a few commendable things in life. Talking about the books he says, “I have quite a few old and loyal customers. I collect these books in bulk from various customers in the vicinity. I buy them at a certain price and then sell them one by one or in bulk to wholesalers. ” A Rs. 300 book might cost you just
about Rs. 60-70 only! The quality and condition of the books is quite good considering these are used books. Soniji is particular about that fact. As we browsed through this quaint shop, we found a collection of really old editions of Childcraft and World Book series.
“
My other daughter is a Marketing Head at a very big company here. I am so proud of both of them and I feel happy that I could provide for them and give them the life they deserve.” We were wondering if anyone still wants to buy these to which he retorts, “These books have no resale value in the market. No one keeps or buys them as you get CDs and copies of it on the internet.” So why collect them? “You know in the movies you see an office space lined up with books on the shelves, these books are taken for that shot! They come once in a month and rent out these old books,” shares Soniji.
You would think that selling books might not provide a sustainable living. But if you’re smart and plan your savings right, wonderful things can happen to you as well. Soniji worked hard and ensured that his children received a good education and lead a better life. He almost fought back tears when he spoke about them. He shares with us his heart warming story. “With this humble shop, I was able to send one of my daughters to Canada! She is studying there and is doing really well. It is not easy to send a daughter to another continent, I am glad that I had the guts. My other daughter is a Marketing Head at a very big company here. I am so proud of both of them and I feel happy that I could provide for them and give them the life they deserve.” One thing we took back from meeting this kind-hearted hooder is that hard work always pays. All you have to do is keep working and doing your job, good things will follow!

Introducing new, a design-i nspired collaborative workspace in Mumbai, Natascha Chadha, CoFounder and Community Director at Ministry of New, has quite an interesting story to tell When you move to a new country, it is given that there is going to be a bit of a struggle to adjust to your new surroundings. The people, the lifestyle, the ways in which things work – there’s a vast difference in everything. For Andheri hooder Natascha Chadha, a Dutch national, the main difference that she felt was in the work culture. And in order to change this culture, she joined hands with her fellow Dutch friend, Marlies Bloemendaal who had already introduced the concept of coworking spaces with Ministry of New. Together they are bringing about a change, creating an efficient, inspring and productive space to work. Here are excerpts from our conversation.
June 2016 | Volume 2 Issue 3 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)
by Gargi Bansod
I think we can say that you are a global citizen having lived in various countries and having pursued a number of passions. Tell us more about your life. I’m from Holland but my father is Indian. I started off as a journalist after studying in the US. I came back to Europe and worked as a journalist in London for various magazines and websites. Then I came to Holland and worked as a Copywriter with an international fashion brand for 7 years. I handled all the communication for them. I even wrote a coffee table book for the company. When I moved to India, I started freelancing as a Brand Consultant. I also tried my hand at acting and was a part of Improv Comedy Mumbai for 3 years.
How did you get involved with the Ministry of New? My business partner, Marlies Bloemendaal, had already launched Ministry of New in 2013. She is an art director and was looking for a creative, inspiring space to do her shoots. I met her through a Dutch designer friend of ours. I was doing independent brand communication consulting at that time, I became a member and then we just kept in touch. Last year we decided to open this flagship space in Fort.
What has been your most satisfying moment at Ministry of New? Last month we held Open Days to let people know more about the space. People just lit up the entire week and we got amazing feedback. They just couldn’t stop smiling and told us that they were more productive here. That was extremely satisfying! It was also nice to see the exact target customers being attracted to the space.
What message would you give new entrepreneurs?
What is the USP of Ministry of New? It is a beautifully designed space in the heritage site of Kitab Mahal! We have tried to give it a very modern, European yet cosy, eclectic design and feel. The design of the space, has attracted a lot of creative people. Ministry of New is a new way of working and doing things. The place functions like a club. You can sit wherever your work gets done at that time. Also, what is unique about it is that it is creating this community of people from interesting fields. It also has an international vibe.
You need to dose your energy. Every time you’re working towards something, there’s something new that will come up along the way. Keep building your brand, build your customer base. It’s kind of like a marathon. You can’t just do a quick sprint and finish. You have to pick up the pace slowly. Don’t burn out early as you will need sustained energy to keep going.
‘You might be travelling global…But you are always living local.’ What does this statement mean to you? I think it’s very, very true. I travels globally but I would be very excited if something new is coming up in my neighbourhood, especially here in Mumbai where it takes long to reach anywhere. It’s all about enriching your life. The more you can get out of your neighbourhood, the better!

y father was my first hero and today he is my best friend. My two and a half year old completely adores her father too! Once her father is back from work, I completely cease to exist. Every time he tosses her in the air, my heart skips a beat but she is all giggles and demanding more, more, and more! It is so nice to see that now fathers are so very hands on and actively involved in the child’s life.
FATHER
by Nivedita Mataliya
HERO, FRIEND OR DISCIPLINARIAN? A
father brings unique contributions to parenting that no one else can replicate. The fact that men are from Mars and women from Venus brings in basic differences in personalities. This diversity enriches all aspects of the child’s development and is therefore a very important stimulant. Let us understand the impact of the father – child relationship in your little one’s development. COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Fathers communicate differently with children. The interaction has a different tone, quality, language, topic, approach and meaning. This leads to varied experiences and exposure for the child. A number of studies suggest that fathers who are involved, nurturing, and playful have children with better linguistic and cognitive capacities, higher levels of academic readiness and are better at handling stress. SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT There are two main points to consider: The Father-Mother Relationship This will be the basis on how the child will forge relationships in the future.
34
“The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother” A father, who treats the mother (his wife) with respect and deals with their interpersonal conflict in a mature and constructive manner, will lead to boys who will understand how they should treat women and will be more respectful and constructive to their differences. Girls with respectful fathers see how they should expect men to treat them and are less likely to become involved in violent or unhealthy relationships. In contrast, research has shown that husbands who display anger, disrespect and lack of acceptance for their wives are more likely to have children who are anxious, withdrawn or antisocial. FATHER’S SOCIAL OUTLOOK The father’s social approach will have an important impact on a child’s emotional and social development. A positive, realistic and constructive attitude will lead to the child being more emotionally secure, confident, and independent, have better social connections and will be better at regulating feelings and behaviour. On
June 2016 | Volume 2 Issue 3 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)
the other hand, neglect by the father can have dire consequences. Child neglect can be in the form of failure to provide for the child’s basic needs such as food, clothing, education, and nurturing. Or psychological maltreatment that is negative behaviour, such as ridiculing, terrorizing, corrupting, or denying affection. This neglect can have a huge negative effect on the child making them prone to depression, exhibiting disruptive behaviour, lying, lack of interest in studying, inharmonious relationships and substance abuse. WHAT SHOULD FATHERS DO? • Develop a positive and mature relationship with the children’s mother • Spend time with children • Serve as a positive role model. They will do what you do and not what you say. • Nurture and discipline children appropriately Can’t end this one without thanking my dad! Thank you so very much for being there always. Happy Parenting and Happy Father’s Day to all!

TAROTSCOPE YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 2016
THE YEAR AHEAD FOR GEMINI Happy Birth Anniversary! Whatever in your life has reached a state of equilibrium let it now rest as is. Get yourself off to new things which you fancy and have fun. Take care of relationships. Manage your money wisely. Do not deprive yourself, but don’t be a rash spender either. Health will be average. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)
ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Much of June will be full of action for you. Even when you find some activities repetitive, eventually you will have had a fairly good time. Do allow for others’ opinions. Health and finances both will be satisfactory, so focus on having fun. TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): Your spirit of endurance will be working overtime in June. You are understanding and your mates will need your solid presence much more than they can offer you anything. Finances will flow towards spending, so make every bit count. Watch what you eat and your health will be good.
GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): This June, you will be a part of other people’s excitement and activities. Though you can have a fun time, it will not exactly be according to your ideas. So do it for your friends. Expenses will be high now. Aim at spending wisely. Health will benefit from routine exercises.
CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): June will be productive if you are proactive in all situations. However, refrain from expressing yourself. Instead, work for others. Hold back your judgement. Finances will see spending, but will be stable. You must be careful about your diet.
36
LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): Your gumption will stand you in very good stead in June. You will be caught up in a lot of activities, not all of your own making. Some of your colleagues will need your leadership skills right now. Health and finances will be generally stable with little tweaks.
VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): You will manage your responsibilities so well in June that hardly anybody will realise how much energy you had needed to expend! Be aware that you could drain yourself out, so safeguard your finances and your health very, very well. Prepare for an overly active month.
LIBRA
(September 23rd-October 22nd):
June will be a whirlwind of activities of a peculiar mix. Work and pleasure are no longer exclusive and neither will you have the time to check with your own inclinations. The shots are being called by others. It is not yet time to think out of the box. Spend wisely and live healthily; don’t resist but use discretion.

SCORPIO
(October 23rd November 22nd):
You will have a pretty good idea of what is going on around you, this June. However, you will need to tackle situations much according to other people’s better ideas, so be obliging and discerning. Health and finances will be much as usual. Towards the end of June, you could be in for something surprising. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):
Your optimistic outlook is loaded with wisdom and June is the time for your particular nature to shine forth. Whatever the situation, you will seem to have all the answers. Be accepting of other firebrands, as well. Finances will be normal. Be alert and proactive about your health.
CAPRICORN
(December 22nd–January 19th):
Your sensible head and stable attitude will be on call this June as there will be a plethora of activities to get through. Try to enjoy the different ideas people have about how things should be done, as eventually, you will be called upon to troubleshoot. Expenses are high, so spend wisely. Be very choosy about what you eat. Exercise regularly. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): June will provide you with ample opportunities for people-watching and understanding what life-attitudes are trending. Most activities going on around you will not make sense, but a good humour will help you lots. Be sensible and plan ahead in matters of finance and health.
PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): Your deep acceptance and understanding of human foibles and follies can turn the overly active June to a month of adventure stories for you. The end of the month will turn pleasant enough for all the frenetic activities to be worth your presence. Finances will be normal. Health will need nourishing food and rest.
