The Return of our Basic Right A section that existed for over 6 years in the Indian Constitution and very few knew or cared much about it. Why? It was assumed that their freedom of speech was a fundamental right and could not be breached… until it got breached for a few and those very few made enough noise for it to be challenged in the highest court of our land. Result… 25th March, 2015 the Supreme Court strikes down Section 66A of the IT Act which allowed arrests for posting offensive content on social media sites. A reason to celebrate for every citizen who exercises his right to freedom of speech just the same way that he breathes the air in his lungs. Its never thought of… it just is. While we celebrate the Return of this Basic Right of a citizen, one must also understand his or her responsibility as a citizen. There is an age-old saying – “words are like an arrow.. once they come out of the mouth they cannot be stopped”. Mom used to cite this and tell us as kids to be careful with the choice of words, not to hurt someone with our words, as we cannot take them back once spoken.

Editor-in-chief Anubhav Anand @anubhavanand

The same implies in the Social Media world where words are spoken more than they ever were. Writing makes expressing ones thoughts simpler. But the impact of the words remains the same. If a compliment can make someones day.. then unsavory words can definitely spoil it as well. Netizens are sending proverbs and Good Morning messages across the Internet via emails, social media sites, whatsapp. There is a feel good factor to it. The Internet is being used to communicate every bit of information across the globe. What a powerful medium we have today to make any sort of change, influence and connect. So let’s use it to influence the positive and not the negative. A famous saying goes.. “You may use fire to either burn down the house OR make food.. the choice is yours”. Let us be responsible in exercising our Rights and make the positive choices.

Re-defining the concept of

Beauty & Mascul i n i t y by Priya Kanakia

What comes to your mind when I say “beautiful woman” or “handsome man?” A woman with flowing hair and skin so fair and smooth on a figure so perfect, like the ones you can only find on the ramps of the best fashions shows. For the males, it isn’t tall dark & handsome anymore. It’s tall, fair, muscular & handsome. Anything apart from the above or rather different from above description is not even considered in the league. Not many realize this but there is a definition that has been created, not by us though? But it still exists. Earlier women used to be much more voluptuous and happy about it - Asha Parekh, Zeenat Aman, Bindu or Helen. 12

But as the years passed by the “ideal figure” size started diminishing and “size zero” concept stepped in. And of course, advertising industry evolved too and they started using images in ads instead of plain text. They understood that images are much more powerful to sell their products. The beauty industry started gaining pace in 90’s. They knew they had to target 2 most important factors of our lives- beauty and aging. They play with the desires of all, to look attractive & youthful. They are well aware and researched that the demands for products that enhance appearance and make people more youthful will never go down and so will their businesses.

Initially, fairness ads, weight loss ads or ads for a younger skin targeted women. That if a girl won’t be fair she may not get a job or a guy to marry. If she has pimples, she may not have friends because people will not talk to her. Then came up with grooming line of products for men – Fairness creams, face washes, facial kits etc. Hence, even men started getting more conscious about the way they look and their skin and body. Just to let you all in a little secret, I have my own brother who spends almost 20 minutes in front of the mirror just setting his hair. Everything around us i.e. the televisions, online shopping sites, digital advertisements, hoardings, magazines, newspapers, beauty pageants – all of these are continuously bombarding us with images

www.shutterstock.com/ conrado

Lifestyle

that have men and women looking absolutely flawless and fabulous. We all know they wear heaps of make-up and most of these images are photo shopped, but, what can we do about it? We humans are visual people and these people play with our psychology to sell their product. They create such impressions on our minds that leave a lasting impact and sometimes even influence our thoughts and choices. Hence we can say that all the definitions are created by media, advertising & celebrities. But do we really need to fall prey to it? So, coming to the primary reason of writing this – we all form an image about our physical selves and about our body that is called body-image. I am so huge. I have fat arms. I have huge shoulders. I have narrow legs. I have horrible acne. I am short. I have huge thighs. I am dark. I have a bulging belly? Have you ever thought how did you decide that you are xyz? On what basis did you decide so? A voluptuous girl is made to think she is FAT i.e. abnormal, and almost stigmatised to such an extent – “you will not get a good job or husband, people will ignore you” because that’s what they show in advertisements. So, obviously her image about her body will go down. She will

think – Why is my body like this? Why can’t my body support me? I dislike myself because I am not one of those? Something similar happens with men who are anorexic or obese. This is called a negative body image which is directly related to the person’s self-esteem which is related to self-confidence. If an individual isn’t happy with their own body, they can never be happy with themselves. Anywhere they go, what so ever they do they are always conscious about - how does their body look & if it’s performing correctly? There is nothing against grooming, weight loss or any other products/ services. Rather with globalization, the world has become smaller. Indians are doing business with different countries and coming in contact with people over the world. So rather, being groomed & well-dressed is important because it’s a proven fact that people make first impressions in 3-5 seconds of meeting a person, especially strangers. But why portray only skinny women and muscular men? Why create stereotypes or rather insert fear in people through advertisements? Few companies like DOVE have understood the effect of advertising on individuals hence they have begun with the campaign called “Dove Real Beauty”

which is very well appreciated. They take different size models and models of different skin colours – which basically promote that human, are of different shape, size, colour to portray that we are all different & unique in our own ways which is perfectly normal. We don’t need to work on changing what we are or how we look and appear to others rather care and strengthen our assets. Simple example of Lata Mangeshkar or Sachin Tendulkar – they aren’t really physically attractive (as per the standard created) but they are well-known and respected for their creativity & competence. At the same time, they take required measures to be presentable with whatever height, body & weight that they have. To re-define the beauty and masculinity standards, we Image Consultants work to uplift self-esteem and self-confidence of people & taking their body image from a low/negative to fresh and positive one. Also, assist people understand their lifestyle, personal style, body type, personal colour and make best of use of available resources to project themselves as whole new being. Because I believe beauty is inside out! When a person feels well from inside, they will be much more confident, radiant. Also Enhanced, Empowered, and Evolved outside. 13

“Neutral” is a commonly used color term. These are not included in the color wheel and encompass black, white, brown, navy, gray. The tints or shades of these colors comprise neutrals. Neutrals are often categorized as earth tones and they tend to combine nicely with most other colors. “Neutrals” are the basis of your wardrobe and a large amount of your fashion budget should be allocated to pieces in these colors.

BENEFITS OF WARDROBE NEUTRALS IN YOUR CLOSET 1) The best thing about Neutrals is having fun mixing and matching garments to create a unique style of your own and when it comes to fashion, creating a wardrobe around neutral colors include black, brown, navy, gray and cream. You can build an outfit with one or few pops of color.

Neutrals paired with accent colors or non -neutrals can also balance the outfit, an otherwise an extravagant or a flashy piece. Neutral wearers tend to prefer to be more understated and not draw too much atten-

Rebuild your wardrobe with more fashion neutrals and you will find it much easier to create several outfits’ combinations. Wardrobe neutrals are needed most by people who are employed in formal, conservative, or service -oriented business-also by people in leadership positions. They are accepted by virtually everyone. For some of us, going neutral might seem boring, but you will be surprised how it is incredibly versatile, complimentary and stylish too. Mostly, you can rely on lighter wardrobe neutrals in warm weather and dark wardrobe neutrals in cool weather.

Anything goes when it comes to these shades and there are plenty of various looks to choose from to find what works for you. If you have a warm complexion, look for warmer neutrals from browns and warm grey to deep olive and camel. If you have a cool complexion try gray, navy white charcoal brown and black. All neutrals when worn should be at least 2 shades away from your skin to avoid blending in your skin.

The beauty of wearing neutrals is that you can wear it with anything and still look polished. Looking boring is sometimes a concern however you can liven up your outfit with textures and accessories. Wear a statement necklace for a dramatic look or even a leopard print shoe or bag. Neutrals open the door to the beauty of possibilities and simplicity.

hot tips

that will let you have a great phone day! How to extend your Smartphone’s battery to last you thru the day.

By Vivek Alwan, Technical Contributor

If you are reading this article, there is a high probability that you live in Lokhandwala or Oshiwara and something close to your heart (or in your pocket) is an Android or iPhone. These days, our choice of phone defines our personality and reflects our lifestyle. Thanks to our service providers, most of us have low cost high talk time plans with high volume or unlimited 3G.

First things first… The typical phone Salesman parrots the manufacturer’s impressive specifications on battery time and regurgitates it for the customers benefit. The truth of the matter is that the manufacturer specifications assume an ideal world without multiple applications running of 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Real world conditions are quite different and we need our Google Maps to navigate while listening to our favorite tunes and checking out hot deals on Flipkart (while replying to our WhatsApp messages)… or taking that quick selfie for Instagram.

feature that adjusts your screen brightness based on ambient light (indoors and outdoors). Chances are that you use your SmartPhone more often indoors at home or at work than the beaches of Hikkaduwa.

If you are one of the millions suffering from the “1% Battery” syndrome, the tips in this article will surely help... So read on! An unfortunate event to occur during the day is your battery going dead. This literally stops you in your tracks. Your phone returns an embarrassing message to callers and your WhatsApp goes offline. The misery continues until you finally get home or to work and get your phone charged, all the while, rehearsing the mean things you want to tell Samsung (or Apple, HTC, Sony, Lenovo, Nokia, BlackBerry… Take your Pick! You really begin to suspect the Salesman at the Store about the tall stories he gave you about Battery Time.

These tips are for Android users. We will cover hot tips for iPhone users in the next issue of Living Local.

If this has happened to you read on.

Also, turn down the Auto-Brightness

Hot Tip 4 Turn off the Vibration function Many users like to use the vibrate function on silent mode. This feature albeit useful, is a real battery leech. The vibration function works by running a tiny motor that oscillates a weight. Android phone manufacturers have provided a vibration for every possible notification, including haptic feedback (which is a fancy name) for getting the keypad to vibrate when you press a button.

Automation Apps such as Tasker lets you turn off 3G and Wi-Fi connections automatically, based on user settings.

Hot Tip 3

Now, after reading this article and you feel that austerity is not your thing and you simply must have all the cool features, don’t fret.

Get rid of useless Apps Uninstalling, disabling or hibernating apps will save you an additional 10% on battery drain How many Apps do you use on a regular basis? If the answer is 25. Keep those 25 and get rid of the rest. Several Apps use GPS and Location Services that consume 3G data without your knowledge. This translates into battery consumption. Apps that have been open run in the background consuming memory and power. There are several Apps that unnecessarily consume your precious 3G bandwidth and try to communicate with their home servers. Turning off the vibration feature will save you an additional 5% on battery power If you turn off the vibrate function, a simple solution is to leave your phone in full view so you can see when a new call is coming in. The solution is to carry a portable power bank with you. Typically, a 2800 mAh device can provide you with two full charges. These devices are available online and at most mobile and computer store around our area. Now remember, bigger is not necessarily better. There are power banks that range all the way to 15,000 mAh. These are bigger and heavier than the sleek 2800 mAh or 5600 mAh ones. For a single recharge, a 2800 mAh device should suffice. However, if you are planning a long rafting weekend at Kolad, you might consider carrying a bigger one. Here’s wishing you a happy phone day!

It’s time for Women

Manage Money

www.shutterstock.com/ Sofia Andreevna

to

“Women are the real architects of society.”—Harriet Beecher Stowe

As the country celebrated International Women’s Day on 8th March, it was an opportunity to celebrate women’s economic, political, and social achievements. As women become more independent it is important to look at the relationship women have with their money. Traditionally, a significant number of women have depended upon someone else to take care of every aspect of their finances. Whilst dividing responsibilities has been a good idea for couples, it is critical that women play an active role in at least understanding the rationale and reason for finances being managed and invested in a particular way. This preparedness 20

would be of significant importance in times when an unexpected event forces them to manage everything, including their finances. Many women think that they should stay away from managing finances, and that they can’t handle numbers. But they fail to realize that while managing their monthly expenses they are actually dealing with numbers all the time. For women who work as well as look after their homes, it is equally important to take interest in the investments of the money they earn. To save is good but not enough, since inflation eats into savings as time goes by. Thus investing appropriately is critical, so

that there are adequate monies available for various goals as and when required. The most important starting point is to develop a holistic financial plan. When it comes to financial planning, women should actively participate because planning is not just about investments, but its also about creating a vision for a couple have about their future and their family’s future. Would a woman not be interested in knowing whether she is able to meet those goals or what she should be doing to make her vision a reality? Would she not be interested in understanding the progress towards these goals along the way?

1. Get over the myth that only men can manage money. 2. Get comfortable with discussions around money. 3. If you are a woman who relies upon your husband for taking investment decisions, start visiting your financial planner/ advisor along with your husband. Please remember, you have always been good with managing numbers, you just have to open your mind to the investment part of it. To start off, look closely at some investment avenues:

1. Mutual Funds: A mutual fund is a pool of money from numerous investors who wish to save or make money just like you. There are various types of mutual funds and it is important to choose them as per your risk appetite and investment horizon. Investing in small amounts over a period of time, also called as SIPs, have proven to be an excellent method of wealth creation and converting your savings to investments. 2. Fixed Deposits: For those who are starting off and are looking to lock in their money in fixed returns, they can look at fixed deposits for investments, either from banks or good quality corporates. One thing to remember is that the highest rate fixed deposit may not necessarily be the best, as it may come with certain risks.

3. Insurance plans: Covering the risk of your life adequately and health challenges that could occur for your family are critical aspects of your financial life. Try to keep your investments and insurance separate by buying pure term insurance policies 4. Retirement plans: Retirement usually comes lower down in the list of financial goals for most people. However, it is critical and needs to move up in the priority list. To plan for retirement, the most important thing is to calculate the money you will need for your post-retirement years. There are multiple retirement plans to choose from through mutual funds, insurance companies, the New Pension Scheme (NPS) or PPF. Look to see how you can create a good mix. Remember well managed money is great value for what it can buy you – peace of mind and a good night’s sleep.

Lifestyle

There are three simple steps through which you can start creating your financial future and play a more active role in decision making around your family’s finances:

Easy tips to help beat calorie-overload this year (BPT) - Did you make a New Year’s resolution to eat better this year? Or are you thinking you might need to make some lifestyle changes to get ready for the summer swimsuit season? Although it may seem like a daunting task, getting started on a weight management plan can be easy. A few simple expert tips can help you watch your calories so you can accomplish your healthy living goals. From rich and calorie-filled menu items to family celebrations, it’s easy for healthy eating habits to get off-track this time of year. This can be especially true following the holiday season which is filled with parties and holiday cookies. In fact, 49.2 percent of respondents in a recent survey from Sweet’N Low said they lost control of their usual eating habits during the festive holiday season.

22

Watch your drinks - Do you know that some drinks contain as much as one-third of a dieter’s recommended daily caloric intake? Sugary, indulgent drinks may be in season but they are typically full of hidden calories. To get your sweet fix, replace the sugar in all your favorite drinks with a zero-calorie sweetener, such as Sweet’N Low. Your drink will be as sweet as you like it, but with fewer calories.

Bring a healthy dish to parties - If you’re bringing a dish to a party, impress your friends with something that’s both delicious and lower in calories. When researching options, look for appetizer and dessert recipes that are “under 100 calories” so that you and your friends can skip the calorie-overload and instead, focus on enjoying the festivities.

sugar in your drinks by sweetening with a zero-calorie sweetener, instead. One great option is Sweet’N Low in the little pink packet. If you are making your own cappuccinos at home, try a lower-calorie Skinny Vanilla Cappuccino recipe at only 96 calories per serving. Another great option is a warm, soothingly-cool Thin-Minty Mochaccino (recipe below). With only 70 calories per serving it is one of Dr. Peterson’s favorites. For more, lower-calorie recipe ideas, health tips or information to help you keep your diet on-track, visit www.sweetnlow.com. No matter what, it’s important to live and maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle that works for you all year long. For many people, just taking the first step toward healthier habits can be the hardest part. “Starting small is OK, because even small steps are steps in the right direction,” Dr. Peterson advises. “Simply replacing the sugar in your daily coffee with a zero-calorie sweetener is an easy way to cut some calories from your usual diet and it can get you thinking about other ways to improve your health.”

Beauty/ Health

If you’re looking for easy ways to skip some calories without skimping on the fun, Dr. Keri Peterson, a New York Citybased practicing physician and medical expert who appears regularly on the Today Show, CNN and Good Morning America, offers these simple suggestions to help manage your calories:

Thin-Minty Mochaccino Recipe (makes 4 servings) Ingredients: 1 1/4 cups hot, strong-brewed coffee 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract 8 packets Sweet’N Low zero calorie sweetener 2 cups hot skim milk Directions: Whisk coffee, cocoa powder, peppermint extract and Sweet’N Low in heatproof container until well blended. Stir in milk. Pour into 4 mugs and enjoy!

Take a walk - Don’t let the chilly temperatures of winter or the rains of spring put you in an exercise slump. If you can’t fit time for the gym into your schedule, take a quick walk around the block at lunch, park a little farther from the office or shopping mall entrance or wake up earlier and take a brisk walk before you conquer the day. You can burn about 150 calories during a 30-minute walk. As an added plus, exercise doesn’t just help you stick to your diet; it may also put you in a better mood.

Don’t sacrifice all the treats you love Is drinking a vanilla cappuccino on your way to work your favorite way to start the day? If you are watching your calories, be mindful that many popular coffee shops sweeten those drinks with high-calorie sugar or syrups. For example, a typical, 1-ounce serving of syrup has 12 grams (3 teaspoons) of sugar! On the other hand, completely abstaining from the treats you love can sidetrack the most faithful of dieters. Rather than go unsatisfied, try reducing or cutting out the added 23

Spring clean your health (BPT) - Spring is a time to reevaluate your daily routine and reduce any unnecessary clutter from your life. It is also a time to make positive changes for a happy and healthier lifestyle. Simple changes, such as resetting your sleep pattern, updating your oral care routine and refreshing your diet can result in big changes to your overall well-being. To inspire consumers and their families to get a healthy start to spring, Dr. Nancy Simpkins, Internist and Medical Advisor for the State of New Jersey, shares a few healthful tips on behalf of Colgate Total: Get moving outside: Spring is a great time to be outdoors, so ease back into your exercise routine with daily walks outside. This will help reduce stress and help lower your risk of heart disease and hypertension. Get creative and use apps to track and challenge your friends to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Reset your sleep pattern: With the arrival of spring come longer days and more daylight. Beat fatigue by setting a goal to keep your waking and bed time consistent - even on weekends. This will help avoid mid-day burn outs while keeping your body in sync with its natural rhythms. Think about your gum health: Most people don’t realize that proper oral hygiene can be a good step toward helping to improve their overall health. In addition to brushing your teeth, make sure to take good care of your gums they’re the foundation of a healthy mouth. Switch up your daily oral care routine by using Colgate Total’s New Gum Health Mouthwash after brushing. It has an advanced germ-fighting formula (versus non-antibacterial mouthwash) that forms a protective shield along the gum line and protects against bacteria that can cause gingivitis. Travel healthy and be prepared: As you begin to make plans for spring and summer travel, be sure to schedule your family doctor and dentist appointments and address any issues before your trip. Compile a list of medications, unique health issues or history, and physician contact information. This will be important and save time if you end up needing healthcare while you’re away. Refresh your diet: Simple changes to your diet can bring more sustained energy and knock off a few pounds. Swap out snacks like potato chips with banana chips and replace red meat with lean protein from turkey and chicken. Also look to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season into your diet. With these small changes to your lifestyle, you can upgrade your health for a better you. “Gummy Smile”

can be described as excessive exposure of gums while smiling that attracts observer’s eyes as an abnormal finding. VARIOUS REASONS FOR ‘GUMMY LOOK’ A. Hereditary pattern plays a major role, as one of the parents having such problem can pass it to the child as it is! (one cannot stop it, by any kind of precaution) B. Uneven balance between facial bones, especially the lower third of the face bearing upper jawbone called Maxilla and lower jaw bone called Mandible. C. Particular childhood habits like thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, pencil biting can heavily lead to unwanted, uncontrolled growth of the upper jaw along with flaring of the upper front teeth and resultant the fan shaped jaw growth. D. Delayed eruption of the upper front teeth covers almost half of the white portion of the teeth with pink swollen gums. (pseudo- gummy smile) Fortunately in today’s era of advanced technologies and treatment modalities, this problem of excessive gummy display can be “Regularized” in couple of appointments. The success rate of post-procedural result is amazingly satisfying and long lasting.

treated on a similar line. It needs extra care from cosmetic dentist to close small gaps in the front tooth with minimal cosmetic and gum correction. D. Delayed eruption of teeth with resultant “show off” of gums is called as passive eruption (pseudo smile). The condition can be treated with various clinical procedures as follows:1. The simplest and most frequent procedure is the reshaping of the excessive gums with “Soft Tissue Diode Lasers”. It is a walk in – walk out procedure (see photos below) and is permanent without the overgrowth of unwanted pink portion.

A. Hereditary pattern of excessive growth of upper jaw along with gums can be treated surgically (invasive) or non-surgically (non-invasive). If the growth of the jaw is far beyond normal parameters there is a need of surgical correction. Fortunately it is not very common, in remaining situations treatments is mostly non-surgical. B. Gummy smile cases due to uneven balance between the two jaws, within permissible limits are mainly treated with orthodontic braces with amazing results. The time span will vary between 12 to 15 months depending on the severity of the case. C. Particular childhood habits with resultant fan shaped teeth and jaw can be 26

COSTING A. A typical cosmetic contouring of “little excess gums” with soft tissue laser can cost around 20k per jaw (Anterior Zone of Excellence).

TREATMENT OPTIONS For the concerned dentist, it is the diagnostic ability and assessment of the post-procedural looks that is of paramount importance.

In certain cases, patient has typical complaint of excessive dark gums (literally black gums called CARBON gums). With the legitimate use of soft tissue lasers it can be treated very effectively. It’s a walk in-out appointment. (see photos below)

2. When the gummy portion is well supported with underlying “parent bone” it needs a small surgical correction, called as “Crown Lengthening Procedure – CLP”. ( see photos below)

B. A typical CLP procedure with small surgical requirement for upper jaw can be in a range of 50 to 70k. The results are satisfactory and permanent. C. “Carbon Gums” (melanin pigmentation) treated with soft tissue lasers can cost between 25 -30k. Caution: the pigmentation may reappear after 18-24 months and need to be retouched. SUMMARY

In today’s world of “Showman-ship” or “Face value era” these once upon a time neglected issues are affecting the person on “Socio-Economic” front! The issue of “First Look”, “Smiling Face”, “Unpleasant Profile”, “Impressive personality”, which may be getting hampered by this “Denture like look” or “Gummy Look” can be corrected to a very pleasing one. It is a big social commitment and service to the society that can be rendered in dental clinics.

Ask the Pharmacist: Exercise tips your heart will love Exercise tips your heart will love (BPT) - A regular exercise routine is an important component of heart health, yet less than one-third of Americans get the minimum 30 minutes of daily exercise five days a week, as recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA). Nationally, as many as 250,000 deaths annually are attributable to a lack of regular physical activity. While exercise is important for everyone, regular aerobic activity can be critical to ensuring healthier outcomes for cardiovascular patients. Even a little exercise goes a long way. “Just 5-10 minutes of daily running, even at very slow speeds, can significantly lower the risk of mortality among cardiovascular patients,” says Ed Dannemiller, a specialist pharmacist in the Express Scripts Cardiovascular Therapeutic Resource Center. “Simply getting the recommended minimum amount of exercise can help reduce cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke by 30-40 percent.” Ed and his team counsel heart patients about the benefits of regular exercise in addition to following the medication regimen and other lifestyle changes. Regular exercise has many other benefits for your heart as well, including: strengthening the heart muscle, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, gaining better control of one’s blood sugar and maintaining bone strength. Exercise can also help heart patients lose weight and lead more active lives without chest pain. 28

If you are considering starting an exercise regime, keep these precautions in mind to minimize your risks and prevent an adverse reaction. * If you recently had a heart surgery or procedure, experience chest pain or shortness of breath, recently had a heart attack, or have diabetes you should consult a physician before beginning any exercise regimen. * If you are on beta blockers, anti-arrhythmic drugs and calcium channel blockers, you may have a reduced heart rate and may experience lower gains in heart rates when exercising. Medications such as the decongestant pseudoephedrine, anti-depressants, and thyroid medications can increase exercise heart rate. It is important to know the right aerobic heart rate target to prevent overtraining or under-training your heart if you are on any of these medications. * If you are a cardiovascular patient, high-intensity exercises such as pushups, sit-ups and heavy lifting may not be recommended for you, so it’s a good idea to first speak with your physician. * You may also need to avoid certain everyday activities that can overly affect the heart rate, such as raking, shoveling and mowing. * Walking, swimming and light jogging are good beginning exercises if you have a cardiovascular condition. But what if you’re already on a work-out schedule? Then keep these useful tips in mind:

* Maintain a steady pace and rest between workouts. * Do not exercise outdoors in extremely humid, hot or cold temperatures. Extreme temps can make breathing difficult and cause chest pain. Try mall-walking instead. * In cold weather, cover your nose and mouth when exercising outside. * Stay hydrated by drinking water, even when you’re not feeling thirsty and especially on hot days. * Avoid overly cold/hot showers or sauna baths after exercise. * Avoid exercising in hilly areas because it may cause your heart to work too hard. Closely monitor your heart rate with your target rate in mind. * Stop exercising if you experience pain, dizziness, shortness of breath or excessive fatigue. Consult your physician. * Stop the activity in the event of a rapid or irregular heartbeat. Check your pulse after 15 minutes of rest and consult your physician if the rate is still higher than 100-120 beats per minute. A regular exercise routine, along with adherence to the medication regimen, can put you on the path toward better health. For more information, visit lab. express-scripts.com.

Outskirts of Andheri West.. amidst Nature... A Tryst with Pause Wines

by Sidharth Sodhi

I live in Andheri west. It is awesome.. but whenever there is an opportunity to get away from it all for a while, I jump at the opportunity. Get close to nature. See more of the colors ‘green’, ‘blue’ etc. A day’s trip to India’s grape capital and wine hub, Nashik seemed like a perfect getaway. Pause Wines, one of the wine producers and providers in the country celebrated it’s first ever Wine fest at Pause Vineyards, nestled in the lush green environs of Dindori near Nashik. I boarded the bus around 8:45 AM from ‘Bisleri junction’ at the Andheri east highway. Our first destination was Pause Winery, which is roughly two hundred kilometers from Mumbai. I slept through most of the bus journey, waking up only when the bus stopped, or when they served us breakfast. In between I stared out of the window looking at the people boarding the bus or taking in the beautiful sights that the journey had to offer, which were aplenty. On one such stop I stood by the bushes on the side of the road inhaling oxygen for a change, looking at the hill locks and vast stretches of untamed 30

be done under controlled conditions. The winery walk through was followed by an official press meet with Mr. Rajesh Patil, founder and managing director, Pause Wines. That was followed by lunch. Our next stop was Pause Vineyards which is located about twenty five kilometers

from the Pause Winery. Set on around 100 acres of land, the vineyards are located in close proximity to the backwaters of the Karanjwan dam. There was a cool breeze as we started our wine trail with a serene view overlooking the vineyards. A leisurely stroll interspersed with casual conversations as we got to learn about the

wilderness. They say nothing relieves a man as he stares at wild barren land and hill locks as he pisses all over it. I am joking of course. But ah..it is beautiful. One does not see these sights living in our crowded suburbs. I usually do not consume alcohol. I have tasted wine just once in my life. I was looking forward to an interesting eventful day. It took us close to five hours to get to Pause Winery where we started off with the winery walk through. The wine making process is a tedious task and needs to 31

wine making process and nibble on the grapes used to make wine. That was followed by a session of grape stomping and wine tasting under a beautiful shamiana accompanied with light music .A perfect end to a lovely day. A fellow writer suggested I try ‘Merlot’. I did. Wine if taken in moderate quantity is good for health. Plus I needed to sleep in the bus on our return journey home. As the Pause Wines motto states ‘Life can wait’. Mr. Rajesh Patil, Founder and Managing Director, Pause Wines: ..we all need to take a ‘Pause’ in life sometimes..and wine goes with that. It refreshes you. That is the philosophy behind Pause Wines. Pause Wines is a part of Prarthana Group of companies, Construction Company. Basically I am a real estate businessman. I have always loved to travel, and I am a foodie. On my many travels I got introduced to Wine. Wine is a healthier choice as compared to other hard liquors. Wine in India has a very big future. So I thought why can’t passion and taste be mixed with business. I believe in work with pleasure so I started this wine business. Seventy percent of wine is made up in Vineyards not in the Winery. Because if the grapes are good quality and have good aroma only then will it come into the wine. Ours is the only wine in India which gives the nutritional contents of wine on the label because we are supporting wine as a health drink. Our aim is to cater to all customer segments in the market. 32

Mr. Ranjit Surve, GM – Sales, Marketing : ..the company aims to make the fest ‘A Tryst with Pause Wines’ an annual property. In the future we intend to tie up with tour operators and provide lodgings at Nashik (only fifty kilometers away) from where tourists can travel to the Vineyard.

Leaping Windows

FAVORITE HANGOUT SPOT

When I interview people one of my staple questions usually is ‘what are your favorite hangout spots in Andheri (west)? Seven out of ten people say ‘Leaping Windows’ café. I have been there a few times myself and I quite like the place. Also I am a huge graphic novel, comic book, manga fan. In a free wheeling chit chat with Utsa Shome, Bidisha Basu, Prathamesh Shenoy.. the people behind ‘Leaping Windows’ café, I ask them how it all began and what makes this café so popular.

was hard to connect with the students there..because of the language barrier. So I thought why don’t I read all the things they are reading and talking about..which turned out to be Manga, and I absolutely loved it and became addicted to it. Manga Kissaten or Manga Café’s were kind of cyber cafes, which had books, and food from vending machines.

Q: How did Leaping Windows start? BB: ..well Leaping Windows is two different spaces that we have combined into one. One space is the kitchen now and the entire outside area is for these two spaces. Initially we had only one space where we had a pilot kitchen on top with no gas. Everything was electric..one induction cooker. We used to make our food like

Q: How did you two (Utsa-Bidisha) meet? US: We met through a common friend. We started Leaping Windows together. Initially from our house, online. Then this place happened. This place has been there for three years , the library has been there for five years. The idea started with her (Bidisha). She was in Japan where she saw Manga. BB: ..I was in Japan for two years where I had gone on an exchange program. It 38

that. We used to source our food also. We had coffee and sandwiches and salad.. PS: .. I live close by and when I walked past and saw this place for the first time the initial thought that came to my head was this is not going to last. BB: ..little did he know.. (laughs) PS: (laughing)..little did I know ! I had studied Culinary Arts from IHM Aurangabad and come out so everything for me in a restaurant was about an ideal setting. They had no infrastructure, no staffing and lacked a lot of experience and I thought it was phenomenal that after two years they were able to survive in a market like Bombay where every year sixty percent of the new restaurants that open up shut down within a year. They were here ..what..since eight in the morning.. US: ..that’s pretty much the only reason why we survived. In the first year you are labeled as a place where you would like to go or not. So the only difference we made was being here all the time for one year. All the time! From the time it opened till the time it shut. We were cleaning the loos, we were serving the tables, we were cleaning the tables, we were cooking the food and we were talking to the people. There are a lot of connects that we have made purely because of the conversations that we have had. People have come and the relationships that we have built. That’s the only reason why people kept on coming back, and possibly the only reason why we have survived. We set this up with very basic capital. We did not even have next month’s rent when we set it up. PS: My Mom used to make burgers, chaat

at home and supply it to them. Veg. burger, mutton burger. banoffee pie, which we still have.

died like that, thinking they are Superman.

PS: (smiles)..Yes that was my mother’s contribution.

PS: In the U.S when they sell a Superman cape a warning is attached to it saying ‘wearing this cape does not make you fly’. Like when you buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks, ‘warning: this coffee is hot’.

Q: Why did you name the café ‘Leaping Windows’?

ME: ..like when I bought MAD comics it said ‘Rs. 35. Cheap’.

BB: ..well I had a friend whose brother had a long time ago.. tied a towel around his neck and thought he was Superman and jumped out of the first floor balcony. Of course nothing happened to him. He’s fine. Though we don’t discuss this story too often. In America many kids have

Q: This is a terrific idea. Comicsgraphic novels- food. But how is this working as a business model?

Q: Banoffee pie I hear is popular..

BB: Food is the bread winner. The bread earner. 39

PS: The comic concept is the icing on the cake. The food and beverages is the cake. Q: Why do you think this place has caught on in such a big way with the people? US: We allow people to chill and don’t push them too much. That is one of the primary reasons. The food has propelled a lot of people to come at the price we offer. Good price is something we are very conscious about. The café’s physical space has a good vibe to it.. it engages you. Also the seating outside, the greenery. Plus the comic concept and library. Q: You may be traveling global but you are always living local. What does that

40

mean to you? US: You cannot take theories out of books and try to immediately effect in life. It’s how you adapt yourself locally which actually helps you grow. BB: We may travel the world or travel in India, but ultimately your day to day life is very small..depending on the community and the people you are living side by side with.

concerned as there is no more restriction. It is now a ‘Glocal’ market. Global local. Q: ..very important question. Do you get wi-fi here? BB: Yes.

PS: Food..the market is shrinking a lot. What was not available at the corner shops.. now you get Japanese elements and Italian elements at the same shop. Where food is concerned there is a new chapter opening up where creativity is

My mother and I so enjoy our morning walk; making a circuit around the Lokhandwala area, from our building, to the back road, and around, for a pleasant and serene 4 kilometres. On this particular day, mom was clearly in an inquisitive mood, and suddenly she asks, “Why does everyone have such a grumpy face this early in the morning?” I laughed it off in the moment, but her question stuck with me. I couldn’t help but wonder - don’t they all say that your morning decides how the rest of your day will be? It could decide whether you have a miserable day or an exceptionally brilliant one!

Isn’t it upsetting that we tell everyone around us to be happy, and to spread joy, but when it comes to us, we don’t practice what we preach? My mom always says, “A Smile is the most amazing curve on anyone’s face! It might not add more days to your life, but like they say, it’ll add life to your days.” So many things around us bring so much joy – a child’s smile, a sudden message from a dear one, the unlimited love of a pet, a dream you watched while you were asleep, or even something as small as realizing that a Peepal tree leaf is, in reality, shaped like a heart. It’s not the eyes that need to see, it’s the mind and heart that need to observe, appreciate and experience. Often, while walking with mom, we lapse into moments of silence, and I can’t help but think of the happiness just being able to spend this time with her gives me. Life can be uncertain. One never knows when leaving to get an education, or a job, or even for marriage, will separate

us, leaving us with the distinct possibility that we won’t get these uninterrupted moments together. My mother is my rock, the one person who has been with me from the beginning, through every stage of my life. To be with her, to make her happy and to give her joy, it makes me feel incredibly content. Her joy, funnily enough, lies in my joy, and so she makes sure I think cheerful thoughts, and I do, because those are the times when I smile out of the blue, and marvel at how lucky I am, to have the people I do. Just smile. It doesn’t take all that much. One doesn’t even need to think while walking, even if they’re listening to music. All you need is to smile! That’s why someone rightly said “SMILE it won’t take away the problems, but it WILL give you the strength to handle them”. So, as your fellow walker I’d just like to say, make your day brighter just by smiling for and to yourself, and in the process, share your smile with those walking around you! It’ll hopefully put a smile on their face, and it won’t cost you a thing! As Skipper, the penguin from Madagascar rightly tells us,

“Just smile and wave boys, smile and wave!”

And then, to walk around that early in the morning with a sour expression, how would you expect your day to go? It was during and after all of this thinking that I looked around me. Of the approximately 50 people I saw walking; only two wore a smile, or at the very least, did not frown.

KIDS FITNESS

Kids of the modern era face several health issues owing to the growing interest in technology and its smart gadgets. Most of the kids are seen with their heads buried behind computers, smart phones or playing digital games. This has led to a decline in the overall physical activity of kids. It’s general knowledge that there is direct proportion between reduced physical activity and increase in weight, which has led to increase incidence of childhood obesity. In addition, reduced physical activity may lead to decreased muscle tone & strength, ligament laxity, poor reflexes, core muscle weakness, improper posture, poor balance, altered gait mechanics and reduced activity endurance. Apart from these physical changes they develop several behavioral issues such as aggressiveness, hostility, reduced social and self-awareness, and increase in frustration. It is essential to start interventions at an early stage when the child is still developing. Once this development is complete the changes that have already manifested 42

cannot be reverted to normal. Many parents popularly believe that if they indulge their kids in sports, swimming, karate etc. it will help in keeping their child active. But the child needs to be physically fit before participating in such challenging activities. The ideal way to tackle this problem is through physical exercise. But it is practically not possible to make kids follow an exercise program regularly, as it is dull and boring for them. Therefore the more practical approach is to engage the child in a structured, tailor made, fun filled and interactive activity based program, which will focus on dealing with their specific problems. This will not only improve their physical fitness but also will enhance their performance in the sport or activity of their choice and help them to excel. Moreover it will help in reducing the risk of serious injuries in future. The first step towards this intervention is a detailed and exclusive assessment. The assessment should include the following

important points: 1. Assessment of Muscle tone. 2. Assessment of Muscular imbalance. 3. Assessment of Posture. 4. Assessment of Balance & Co-ordination. 5. Gait Analysis. 6. Foot screening (foot alignment). The data thus obtained will help in determining the target areas and aid in the treatment approach. As mentioned earlier the treatment will be tailor made and focus on improving the problems identified and also improve endurance and agility. This is the time to understand that our modern lifestyle is taking a huge toll on physical health of our young generation. Structured activity based program can prevent lots of future musculoskeletal complications. It is imperative that we provide our kids with a strong foundation so that they can successfully reach new heights without the fear of falling‌.

simple parenting tips guaranteed to transform your picky eater

(BPT) - Few things cause more parental frustration than trying to get a picky eater to enjoy a well-rounded diet. Whether your child has been picky all his life, or, out of nowhere is now turning up his nose at healthy foods he previously adored, it’s easy to feel like your failing as a caregiver.

“I think we need to remember that it is developmentally appropriate for children to not only move in and out of enjoying certain foods, but also to test limits and boundaries with their parents around refusing to eat what we give them,” says Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, a licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health and family medicine. A parent herself, when Shunney’s son goes through phases when he eats only certain things, she tries to remain consistent and optimistic. “I believe it’s part of my job as a mama to keep a positive tone in my voice as I offer variety, explain the importance of protein for muscles and smarts, and sing the praises of eating a rainbow - even after a full day’s work while going up against a tired first-grader who only wants dessert,” she says. “I think the biggest mistake we make is when we just give up and give in because, well, it can be exhausting.” To help parents win the food fights and bring peace to the dinner table, Shunney offers five simple ideas for transforming a child with finicky tendencies into an amazing eater with optimal nutrition. 1. Cook more. Cook for your children and make their dishes simple without lots of sauces and spices. If possible, let them help you cook so they can be part of the fun. Cooking whole unprocessed foods will ensure your family is getting the biggest nutrition bang for your buck. There will be less sodium, sugar, additive and preservatives as well.

4. Supplements

Present them with choices: Would you like carrots or red peppers? Pickles or olives? Try starting dinner with a raw veggie plate and let your kids select what they want. It’s a healthy appetizer that makes eating whole foods a regular part of the meal routine.

Supplements are really important for kids - even ones who eat well. A good multivitamin can help bridge the gap for a picky eater. Add in an omega-3 EPA and DHA supplement which has numerous well-researched benefits in areas like childhood immunity, behavior and attention, cognitive function and emotional well-being. Try Nordic Naturals for a potent, clean and tasty fish oil product that is guaranteed to be free of heavy metals and toxins, plus they make easy-to-dose products for infants and children of all ages. Finally, try a vitamin D supplement - 400 I.U. for breast-fed infants, 500 I.U. from 1-3 years old, 800 I.U. from 4-8 years old, and 1300 I.U. from 9-18 years old.

3. Pick your protein. Find three protein meals your kids like and use them often for dinner and lunches. Peanut butter and jelly should not be an everyday option. Other ideas: Alaskan salmon burgers, organic chicken strips and eating breakfast for dinner that includes a protein like eggs. Choose animal products that are pastured and fed organic feed. If you eat beef, choose grass-fed - this will provide better fats for your children’s development, immune system and cognitive function, as well as help you avoid exposure to chemicals and antibiotics.

Don’t overdo it on starch. Take it easy on dessert. Drink water. Enjoy your food.

“We often take health and nutrition way too seriously and it stops being any fun. I believe that eating food is one of the supreme joys of life, particularly when it’s eaten with people you love!” says Shunney. “Planning meals, preparing food, eating it together while talking and laughing - even the clean up - can all be fun if we make that our intention. The more fun it is, the more our kids will want to participate, and the more they do that, the more engaged they will be around food and family.”

5. Show them. Teach them good eating habits by modeling good eating habits. Share your favorite foods. Sit down at the table and eat. Love your veggies. Relish your protein.

Moms in Training: Sanity-saving tips for

3

New Mothers

(BPT) - From feeding to diaper changing, new moms and dads are flooded with information to learn and decisions to make for their new bundles of joy. A recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive found that nearly 75 percent of moms plan to return to work post-maternity leave. What many new moms may not yet fully realize is that becoming a mother is a full time job in and of itself. Like any profession, new moms deserve training, breaks and lots of support! Tammy Gold, parenting expert and author of the new book “Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer,” shares some easy tips mothers can use to help ease the transition into their new parenting role: Fill yourself up “No mother can give 100 percent of herself, 100 percent of the time, to her children or her partner,” Gold says. “Mom needs to remember what makes her who she is and what she needs emotionally and physically to live a complete life.” Filling yourself up can come from work, volunteering, taking classes, joining online groups, being in a book club, reading, hiking, walking or working out. Do whatever it takes to “fill you up” emotionally, mentally and physically - apart from your children and family. Remember: happy mommy equals a happy baby! Crack the crying code When your baby cries, it can frustrate you, prevent you from sleeping, or even make you feel like crying yourself. Figuring out why your newborn is crying can ease a lot of stress. The main causes for infant crying typically include a dirty diaper, hunger, fatigue or being too hot. However, if these are not the issues, your baby could be suffering from gas, colic or reflux. Switching to the right baby formula or modifying your own diet if breastfeeding can fix all these issues.

46

Don’t compare “You are the best mother to your children,” Gold says. “It does not matter which moms work full time or which moms stay at home to run the ‘perfect’ home. Your children do not care what ‘other moms’ can manage or complete; they only care about you.” Believe in yourself and know that you are the best mother to your children. Be aware of the advice of others, but always trust your own gut, because you know what is best for your own children.

If you’re formula feeding, try switching your baby’s formula to a “sensitive” or “gentle” type formula. These formulas have less lactose and can help to reduce gas and colic. Remember: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) strictly regulates infant formula to keep all babies safe. So, Store Brand Formulas like Wal-Mart’s Parent’s Choice and Target’s Up & Up are nutritionally equivalent to name brands like Enfamil and Similac. By switching to store brands, families can save up to 50 percent, or up to $600 dollars a year, which can certainly help with mom’s stress level.

~ Relationships ~ Your Divine wheel of life

by Roshani

www.shutterstock.com/ Monkey Business Images

Your relationship with others & life at large, is connected & reflective, of your relationship with your innermost sublime self. Your life is a magnificent wheel & your identity as the center holding point, is connected to the spokes of the Wheel, which are a representation of your relationships. For the wheel to be balanced, oiled & running at its optimum best, you have to focus on the center that is holding it (which is you), to emit your inherent love energy through the completeness of self love, & then spread from this center to the spokes & the entire wheel. If a spoke gets rusted, release it with love, learn the lessons why it got rusted, & move on with love & forgiveness, for life to replace it with a healthy one. But realise, that if the center is not looked after, the whole wheel of life shall collapse, & then you cannot look after the center, or the spokes, or the wheel as whole. Infuse these Divine factors in all your relationships, including the one with the Self, so that the vehicle of life, moves on smoothly, lovingly, & in the power of a balanced, awakened living.

BEING SIMPLISTIC

by Divya Panday

Simplistic means treating the complex issues and problems as if they were much simpler than they really are -”simplistic solutions”. We live in materialistic world, in scintillating lights and want to have the things which even we do not require. We get so affected by the things that the other person is having that we forget that there is no need for it. We have forgotten to lead a simple life. A life where there is no hatred, no jealousy, no interference nothing. Running behind the materialistic things has become our habit. We are not happy with the way things are moving. We are not happy with the people around us and with so many things, be it our friends, family, girlfriends, boyfriends, teachers, sisters, brothers, bosses, colleagues & the list is never ending. We are not even simple in our thoughts and not even to the things we say. Today, people are leading a dual life. Two-Faced. One face where they show to the person how much they respect them and appreciate them on their achievements and the second is the one, where how much they make fun of them and doubt on their achievements which means people these days are not even truthful and they do not believe in saying things on the face. Having simple life is not only subjected to wear simple clothes, it is much more than that. Simple life means having simple thoughts. After all your thoughts will only make you the person you are. Why can’t we spend some time to help people, why can’t we genuinely admire and appreciate ones efforts, why can’t we make someone happy, why can’t we think bigger and why we are only focused on having competition with others. Having a simple life will make people happy and cheerful that they will forget what problems are because then they will treat problems like just another situation. Try having simple thoughts, try being simple, if something is creating problem, solve it, if you cannot solve it then ignore it, if the problem is because of you, change the way you have been thinking, change your ways, speak truth and not make fun of people, help people, pray, talk to the God, there is no need to go to temple, church, mosque in search of God, talk to yourself, see what you have done right and where have you gone wrong. Think about yourself in a manner where in you are not competing with others but to yourself. Lead a simple life, have simple thoughts.
