What’s not for Sale this Diwali: Happiness
E
very day during the festive season the most highlighted word in every form of media is SALE. The battle of the e-commerce giants’ Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon makes it all the more exciting for the consumers to make their pick. The brick and mortar stores don’t want to fall short either. You see advertisements with gifts that pretty much fall under all categories of materialistic things known in the world. All on Sale. BUT there is one thing that is never on Sale – Happiness. No matter how big or small the festival may be, happiness never finds its way in this discounted fashion ever. There is a very good reason for the same – Happiness never had a price tag on it to begin with. It was always free, all around us and available with no conditions applied. All we have to do is grab it, feel it, embrace it and celebrate it.
Editor-in-chief Anubhav Anand Twitter- @anubhavanand
With the festivities of Diwali around the corner, there is happiness in the air by default. It comes from spending time with friends, family bonding, get-togethers, puja and all things that don’t require an advertisement with Sale on it. Did your real true friends ever judge you based on how big your car was or the brand of your watch? Probably not. They judged you based on the happiness you brought in by being a part of their lives. There is nothing wrong with indulging in the materialistic pleasures of the Sales that are almost pleading you to pick the products. But that pleasure is short lived. A longer and meaningful happiness will probably come when you give a materialistic item to someone who cannot afford it. See the joy on a poor kids face when you give him or her a candy or a toy they cannot afford. And unknowingly that genuine joy on their face gives us the Happiness that we couldn’t have bought for ourselves on any direct Sale. As I wish you all a very happy Diwali and a prosperous year ahead, I also wish you all the most important thing of all – Happiness.

Vanity Cube brings to you the best home beauty hacks: 1. Keep makeup remover next to your bed so you have zero excuses not to take off your makeup before you go to sleep. 2. Hide a manicure that’s growing out by creating a glitter ombré effect starting at the base of your nails. 3. If you’re too impatient to wait for your moisturizer, toner, and self-tanner to dry, or for your makeup to set, then blast your skin with a blow-dryer on the cool setting.
with your whole makeup regimen, use lipstick to add a little colour to your lips, cheeks, and eyes. 5. If you love winged liner but don’t have the hand-eye coordination to do it perfectly, no big deal: You can clean messy edges with a cotton swab coated with petroleum jelly. 6. If you’re out of liquid or gel eyeliner, borrow some mascara instead of going to the store. 7. Instantly make your eyes look more awake by lining the inner rim (also known as the waterline) of your lower eyelid with a nude eye pencil. 8. Make your blowout last longer than one day by rolling your hair into a looped bun and pinning it before bed. 9. If your hair is too dirty for words but there’s absolutely no chance you’re waking up early enough for a wash, apply baby powder liberally to your roots before bed. 10. If you’ve washed your hair but don’t have the energy to blow it dry, loosely twist your hair into a low bun, secure with a clip, and go about your life.

Travel Essentials – Minimum Baggage Maximum Freedom!

a. Travel as light as possible because unnecessary things are nothing but a liability. b. One cluster of 7 specific items (i.e a total of 15 garments) is enough for 15 to 20 days of a trip. c. Only if you go light, chances are you can bring souvenirs & shop from the local shops. Before I list down the names, I strongly recommend you to do your homework about your destination – determining
10
In my preference carrying basics is the best choice to make. As they mix and match – Plain white/black/navy blue/ grey t-shirts can easily be worn with shorts, skirts & can also be accessorized with neck piece or scarf in an easy manner, while the others could be your personal favorite ones! At the same time make sure you carry different styles – Racer back, halter, camisoles, and fancy blouses for evening wear. www.shutterstock.com/Everything
irst time I traveled outside India, it was to New Zealand for my honeymoon. Since it was first time, the super-excited soul in me carried the whole wardrobe along. Being our “honeymoon”, I could carry all of it” but I did realize I’d taken loads of unnecessary items which were left unused. So, for my next trip to Spain & Portugal which was more of a backpacker’s trip and not a honeymoon style luxurious one – it’s a great deal of walking around with the luggage, I decided to pack half number of clothes I carried to New Zealand. But this time we stayed in hostels and managing the baggage was a pain. Again I learnt few things from that trip:
the season during the months you’re traveling & some do’s and don’ts for travelers in that country. This list is specifically for pleasant/warm climate only. So here are the travel essentials every woman must carry to complete their look as well as to suit their destination. Find the list below: 1. T-shirts & Blouses (6 or 7) It’s the most vital part of the cluster.
November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)
2. Shorts (2) Trust me two pairs of shorts are enough for a 15 day trip. Dark colored jeans works best as they can be worn multiple times without washing. While the other pair you could consider printed ones or any other color of your choice. Shorts are awesome for beach destinations, but do your homework before wearing them to sight see religious places in all of Europe like cathedrals or Mosques as they are strict about rules even with tourists. 3. Leggings (1) These are best for travel – airplane or long bus/train/car journey from one destination to the other, especially for summers. They can be worn with any tee or blouse, are easy to wear, look fashionable & are most comfortable to stay in for all day!
a sling bag because it lets my hands be free to greet people, touch and feel nature and capture photographs etc. 3. Accessories Sunglasses, hat, earrings, neck pieces and scarves are a must. Sunglasses are essential for any destination. Make sure you co-ordinate your jewelry and scarf along with your tees, dresses, maxi dress, also pack no more than 2 or 3 different pieces of each.
4. Make up Make up that I usually carry for my holiday includes – sun screen, a good tinted moisturizer (especially if you want to have an even skin tone), lipstick, lip-balm, eye pencil (but apply occasionally) and make up remover. I don’t say make up is a must, but a little bit of it for the day – lipstick and tinted moisturizer and for the night – eye pencil, lipstick and tinted moisturizer make you look more polished.
www.shutterstock.com/Superson
4. Skater Dress (2) A dress for the day and one for night in case you plan a date or party. Plan your clothing according to the places you are going to visit on that particular day. The reason for specifically carrying skater dress is you can team it up with any top and there you get a new outfit. Also, keep in mind to choose the fabric wisely depending upon the temperatures – georgette, chiffon, crepe may make you feel uncomfortable in overly hot climate or satin may stick to your body in rains/ strong winds. 5. Maxi (1) Maxi dresses are too comfortable, cool and can be worn in different ways – with cardigan, neck piece or scarf to get you different looks each time you wear it. They are good for all body types especially the good fitted ones. Personally, I feel, it’s a mark of a woman ;) 6. Cardigan(1) One Cardigan is a must. It saves skin from sun tan, and also protects you from cold wind and is also an outfit that you can easily mix and match – shorts + tee +cardigan or Maxi + cardigan or Skater dress + cardigan – to have different looks each time! 7. Swimwear(1) Of course, swim wear is a must if your destination is a beach. If not still carry it along, it hardly weighs anything & you never know where you get a chance to take a dip. Different swim wears are available for various body types; find out which one is for yours. Generally I just wear my shorts over the costume so it looks like a crop top – 2 in 1 effect! Apart from clothes, here are few essentials to have a complete look at the trip: 1. Footwear Walking shoes/boots, a pair of flip flops and evening ballerinas/sandals/wedges depending on what you prefer – 3 pairs are must have if you going in for leisure cum adventurous cum party trip. 2. Sling bag A medium sized sling bag is ideal because it has just enough space to carry your day essentials like day cream, sunscreen, body cream, lip balm, wallet, swim wear, sarong and sunglasses. Personally, instead of carrying a tote (which is more fashionable), I’d carry
Believe in a foreign county we represent our country, so might as well make a good impression on people around the world about my country! Happy Holidays!

FINANCIAL PLANNING LESSONS FOR A JOYOUS DIWALI
“T
he greatest Indian sale is here!!!” Are these the kind of emails that you are receiving in your inbox? I certainly think so. Is this changing the way you consume? Your spending can be categorized into two types - regular spends and lifestyle spends. Regular spending includes basic necessities of life, whilst lifestyle spending includes items that enhance your convenience. There are a number of factors which affect consumer spending patterns How and where you shop? Shopping online or at supermarkets mostly ends up in you buying more than what you actually need. Having a list indicating what you need to buy can prevent you from buying things that you do not absolutely require. Rising brand consciousness – Global exposure, introduction of new products and offers are some of the reasons. Easy availability of credit - Personal loans and plastic money options such as debit cards, credit cardsand other online payment options also contribute to a great extent towards making it easier to spend and reduce the pain of delayed gratification.

Growth of the eating out culture Lifestyle expenditure is not just limited to shopping but also dining out. Earlier people used to go out for dining may be once in a month or only to celebrate specific occasions. It’s good to celebrate and spend a part of your savings on yourself. But before doing that we must ask ourselves few important questions – Have I saved enough? What impact will this have on my important long term goals? Things that we can do to make sure that we do not deviate from our long term goals are: Keep a check on our expenses: This can be done by making a budget for oneself – separate regular expenses and occasional expenses like vacation and other onetime expenses. Also a lot of expense management applications are available on our smartphones these days. Invest regularly: Get yourself into the habit to invest regularly. Change your thinking from “ I got a goodBonus this
Diwali, let me buy a new LED TV or a latest smart phone” to “Let me invest this for my long term goals”. Plan in advance: Make a list of your goals – self education, child education, property purchase, etc. Know the amount of money you would need for each of these. Don’t forget to apply inflation while calculating the value of these goals when they become due. Insurance: Plan for both term insurance, and health and critical illness cover in your kitty. Have a wonderful Diwali, but keep your lifestyle expenses in check.

ouple of decades back, a typical “MARD” was someone very macho. A strong man who fought goons to protect his damsel in distress. This generation cheered every time Amitabh Bachchan screamed, ‘Mard ko dard nahi hota”. The definition has gone through various iterations, MARD in 2015 is a progressive man who cheers for his woman every time she wins, shares responsibility, isn’t conscious about being sensitive and stands with her through tough decisions. This article is not about what women expect from men but about all those men, who in their own way want to tell women that they respect us. I know so many men who are “True Gentleman” and treat us right. They want to step up and prove all stereotypical judgments are wrong. This is not a gender debate, because not all men are the same.
to make a difference by standing strong for women that represent strength and dignity. These men are amongst us, our dad, brothers, spouse, partner, sons, friends and we love them. Men and women think differently but we balance each other, that’s the beauty of relationships. A real man will make you want to be the best version of yourself without changing who you really are. As a social influencer, I suggest when you make us laugh, we find you 100077873987 times more attractive. Yes, I am an independent woman of the new millennium and I accept this without any bias, happy men make happier women. Every time these real men stand with us, support us and wear pink to amuse us, our heart smile’s. After all being a gentleman never goes out of fashion.
Life Hack: Real MARD will flaunt a bigger heart than muscles. My blog is perceived as being feminine but it is surprising that 50% of the readers are men who feel as strongly about issues affecting women. They want

Good news is that it can be reversed, provided you start treatment early. You may need a holistic program of hair revive and regrow treatments along with suitable home care system and nutritional supplements. Of course, treating the root cause is vital. Hence I would recommend that you consult a hair specialist doctor who can get to the root of the problem and plan a hair volume boosting regime for you.
Dear Soma, Many factors come together to cause hair thinning in women. Of them, nutritional deficiencies, ageing (or pre-mature ageing) of the hair root or follicle, and hormonal imbalances are the most important factors. Ageing reduces blood circulation to the follicle, depriving the hair of nutrition. Nutritional deficiencies aggravate the problem. Hormonal imbalances (eg. Thyroid problems, PCOD, peri-menopausal period) alter the male:female hormone ratio and cause shrinking of hair follicle.
Q. My husband is 35 yrs old. He has started balding, this has increased since 3 years. He has a genetic tendency for balding. Can he get back his hair without surgery? - Sonali Sharma
In your case, probable peri-menopausal hormonal disturbances or ageing changes with genetic tendency may be the primary culprits.
16
Dear Sonali, There are 7 different stages in male pattern hair loss. Depending on the stage of your husband’s hair loss, one can recommend the appropriate treatments. Non-surgical treatments like BiogenesisTM and Nutri-driveTM do help in effectively reversing the hair loss and re growing the natural hair back. What is very important is to opt for holistic treatments for best results. In advanced stages as well as in reconstructing the receding hair line,
November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)
surgical treatments may be needed. Remember even when opting for surgical treatments like hair transplant, medical treatments need to be done simultaneously to ensure that the existing hair are preserved. Another non-surgical hair reconstruction is hair integration system. Using this solution, one can get a full head of hair instantly. This solution is very useful to give complete scalp coverage in advanced hair loss cases.

Q. Doctor, of late, I have been noticing that my hair is thinner than what it used to be. Also, my scalp is more visible, especially in the center of parting. I am a 45 years old, busy, professional. I maintain a healthy lifestyle. Also, I only use good branded shampoo and conditioners. Hence am not able to understand why my hair is thinning. Is it ageing? What should I do? - Soma Parikh

Reasons Why to Restore Missing
Teeth
by Dr Ritika Arora Dr. Ritika Arora MDS – Cosmetic Dentist & Implanotologist (Aesthetic Smiles Dental Clinic)
D
o you have missing teeth? Are you one of the numerous adults that have lost their teeth do to gum disease, accidental trauma, failed root canals, decay, etc.? Missing teeth can affect your self-esteem and cause you to miss out on your favorite foods. So what is the solution you may ask? Dental implants can raise your self-confidence again as they look and feel just like your own teeth. Dental implants could be the best option for you. Just what are the perks of dental implants over other procedures for missing teeth? Here are 6 benefits that dental implants have to offer: Reason #1- Closest Looking To Natural Healthy Teeth They are sturdy and also secure and can replace a missing tooth. It fits as well as looks like a natural tooth. No more anxiety over dentures slipping or falling out. You are able to keep you teeth in place like natural teeth instead of a having them removable and keeping them in a cup. You can brush, floss, and take care of them like real teeth. Reason #2- Long Lasting Dental implants are a long-term option. Traditional, tooth-supported oral bridges simply last for 5 to 7 years, as well as with proper treatment usually ten years. However eventually they may need to be switched out. While dental implants might need periodic changes,
20
they can last a lifetime when properly placed and also looked after with time. Reason #3- Keeps Your Face Shape And Smile Intact A face without teeth could sag as well as show up submerged and can make you look older. Dental implants permit you to maintain the all-natural form of your face and smile. Reason #4- Keeps Your Jaw Bone Healthy Did you know that leaving vacant spaces in your mouth after losing a tooth or more can lead to added wellness concerns, such as the loss and degeneration of some of your jawbone? Then as the jawbone wears away, it loses the firmness and support. Dental implants can prevent bone loss as the root applies pressure as natural teeth, unlike denture that accelerate bone loss. Reason #5- Eating And Speaking Dental implants make it easy to speak like just like normal natural teeth. Dentures are not easy to speak with and it can be difficult to pronounce things and hard for people to understand you. Eating is more enjoyable as you can consume your favorite meals. Dental implants are placed in position and fused naturally with your jawbone, suggesting your new tooth will not move, shift or click.
November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)
Reason #6- No Cavities Tooth cavities cannot happen in dental implants or tooth replacements. You will still need to have your yearly exams and clean and care for you gums and mouth daily just like you do with your real teeth. We Are Accepting New Patients Aesthetic Smiles Dental Clinic. Dr. Ritika Arora ensures outstanding solution by constantly finding out brand-new modern technology as well as keeping pace with the new advances in the field of dental care. Q&A with
Sakhiya Skin Clinic
I am a 30 year old woman facing issues like dark spots on both the cheeks and no glow on the skin after the delivery of my first child around 3 years ago. I have tried home remedies and facials but have not seen much change. Please suggest if there is some way to overcome this problem. Ruchita, Mumbai A. Hi Ruchita, Due to hormonal changes which occur during pregnancy, some women develop pigmentation around cheeks and forehead which is known as melasma or pregnancy mask. Start using a good sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor of 15 or higher). Remember to repeat the application after 2 to 3 hours. Use creams which contain mild lightening agents like vitamin C, AHA acids (alpha hydroxy acids), kojic acid, glutathione or arbutin at night. Treatments like Peels, certain lasers and Medifacials help in lightening the pigment. You could visit a good dermatologist who could guide you.
Q. As I am nearing 40....I have noticed that my skin looks loose. I feel I have lost the tightness that I had in my skin around 7 to 8 years ago. What best can I do to prevent this aging process and reverse it if possible? Nirali Mehta. 39 yrs. Mumbai A. Hi Nirali,

We start aging faster as we cross our late 20’s. You start noticing appearance of fine lines and wrinkles along with loss of elasticity of skin. Collagen and elastin are two important components which maintain the skin elasticity. As we age, these break down causing loss of skin laxity and sagging of skin. Invest in a good antiaging serum and a night cream according to your skin type. Look out for creams containing AHAs , retinol, peptides or ceramides. When used on a regular basis these can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To slow down the aging process treatments like radiofrequency skin tightening, peels and skin boosters would help. When done on a regular basis, it will prevent further sagging of skin. Minimally invasive treatments like dermal fillers and threads will help plump up and tighten the skin.
changes in the body. These factors could lead to dull, patchy skin and lack of the much desired glow on face. Antioxidants play an important role here. Start consuming foods rich in vitamin C like orange, lemon, Indian Gooseberry. Take Antioxidant tablets which contain vitamin A, C and E. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or 20 regularly. For getting a glow during the festive season you could opt for skin brightening treatments like fruit peels, chemical peels or photofacials. You could also start using a pack made from gram flour or oatmeal, turmeric and yoghurt with a few drops of lemon juice added to it. Use this once a week. www.shutterstock.com/ Yuganov Konstantin

LL | food Chef Around The Corner Upasana Shukla
WHO SAID HEALTHY FOOD COULD NOT BE TASTY?
by Zeba Akhtar
Actress by profession, nutritionist by degree, and now a successful food entrepreneur by passion. Meet Upasana Shukla, our chef of the hood, who’s tiffin service ‘Chatpata Chef’ is taking the hood by storm. That apart, she is all set to host travelers from all over the world as a registered host with ‘The Travelling Spoon’. We caught up with her to explore her passion for food, and here’s what she had to say:
Q.
How did the idea for Chatpata Chef come about? My husband Sumit and I are great foodies. I love to cook and he loves to eat. Also, because of my profession as a nutritionist, I realized that people in the city are craving simple homemade food which is not readily available. And even if it is, it lacks taste. And that’s when we met a fabulous team in Romil and Alok who share the same passion for food. Together, we came up with the idea of Chatpata Chef that would deliver hygienic ‘ghar ka khaana’ type meals to your doorstep. The motto, the vision, the aspiration of Chatpata Chef -all boils down to Taste!
Q.
What exactly is The Travelling Spoon ? Travelling spoon is a company that promotes Food tourism. It is functioning at present in 36 countries. If somebody is travelling to India and wants to experience authentic, home-
24
made Indian cuisine, they can contact a Travelling Spoon host. It is a fun way to meet travelers and show them what authentic regional Indian cuisines are.
Q. How did you come across it?
One of my foodie friends introduced me to the website and I found the idea extremely exciting. I wrote to them. After a good vetting process and after tasting my home cooked meal they got me on board as travelling spoon host. I specialize in North Indian Gujarati and Rajasthani cuisine. I am looking forward to hosting people and introducing them to the different flavours of India
Q. From acting, to nutrition, and now
pop ups and full -fledged food start up, what was the journey like? I have been very lucky to have worked with some very good production houses and do some great shows. I have always been inclined towards the arts field. Food, too I consider a form of expression of art. My food pop ups give me an opportunity to experiment and create. I am really thankful to the universe in helping me follow my passion.
Q. What is it about food that excites you the most? Food has the power to bond people. It is a very private and personal affair in someone’s life that you can be a part of. All the good times that we remember are around dinner tables with lots of fresh food and lots of conversation. There is nothing right or wrong about food. You can change things, experiment with things, play with flavours and create something beautiful from nothing.
Q.
As a woman entrepreneur, how easy or difficult was it for you to carve out a niche for yourself? I feel women are multi taskers, and they can do anything. I believe for married women, having a supportive husband makes life a lot more easier, and I have been extremely lucky in this case. I also believe that the more active you are, the more efficient you get. I have flexible timings. Even though acting was something that I began my career with, I always knew that food was my true calling. More than eating, I love feeding people. It’s a joy of another kind.
Meal in a bowl- Mushroom and barley soup
Q. What according to you is the best
• 1 tbsp olive oil • 3/4 cup chopped onions • 2 tsp finely chopped garlic (lehsun) • 1/4 cups mushrooms , stem removed and sliced • ¼ cup broccoli florets • ¼ cups thinly sliced carrots • 1/4th cup mixed coloured peppers chopped • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper powder • Salt to taste • 4 cups vegetable stock (preferable home-made with without salt) • 1 cup soaked and half-cooked barley (jau) • 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley • 1/2 tbsp lemon juice • Slivered almonds and toasted pumpkin seeds
part about Chatpata Chef that sets it apart from other tiffin services? Taste! We really work hard in experimenting with recipes to make the food healthy and tasty at the same time. Though the meals are healthy wholesome they are never bland or boring. We never compromise on taste. We know that in the middle of a tough daygood food can bring a smile to your face!
Q.
How do you balance taste and nutrition? They say that healthy food is never really tasty, what’s your take on that? When cooked and seasoned correctly healthy food can be extremely tasty. Eating food should not be a punishment. Being a nutritionist I am aware of cooking techniques that preserve the nutritional value of food. Indian spices are the best to enhance flavour even in the most boring ingredients. It should be something you look forward to. Try Chatpata Chef to know that healthy food can be extremely tasty!
Ingredients:
Method • Soak the barley in enough water for 30 minutes. Drain and keep aside. • Boil 3 to 4 cups of water with a pinch of salt, add the barley and cook on a medium flame for 8 to 10 mintues or till it is 50% cooked. RAGI, WALNUT JAGGERY LADOO My mother used to prepare a porridge for us kids using ragi flour, dalia and a variety of nuts. So I decided to mix both these ideas together and prepared these delicious ladoos. The goodness of Jaggery and the walnut crunch makes this ladoo a perfect healthy treat.
November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)
WHAT YOU NEED (makes about 20 pieces)
• 1 Cup Ragi Flour • 1/2 Cup Dalia (Split and Roasted Chana Dal or wheat dalia) • 1/2 Cup Walnuts • 1 and 3/4 Cups Powdered Jaggery • 1/2 Cup Organic Melted Ghee (Clarified Butter) • A Pinch Ground Cardamom (Elaichi Powder) • A Pinch of Ground Nutmeg (Jaiphal powder)
METHOD
1. Brown roast the ragi flour in a hot pan for about 7-8 minutes or until the raw smell is gone. Cool for a couple of minutes. 2. In a food processor/mixer, powder the dalia and walnuts separately. 3. Once the ragi flour is cool enough blend it together with the powdered jaggery, ground dalia and walnuts and the optional spices. If using a food processor pulse it a couple of times or if using a mixer give it small runs. 4. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and add the melted ghee little by little just enough for you to be able to shape them into golf ball size balls. 5. If the laddus crumble down while you are shaping them, it’s a clue that it needs more ghee. To make perfectly round laddu, take the mixture using your fingers and hold it tightly with your palm like making a fist. Once it is tight enough roll it lightly between both your palms to get a neat shape. Do not give too much pressure while rolling else it will crumble down.

M-The Store: Mandira Bedi’s Fashion Extravaganza Unveiled! by Zeba Akhtar
Desi is what I am, and desi is what I want to be,always!
W
e’ve all known her for her infallible charm and one of the first ladies to have stormed into the game of cricket with absolute grace. Mandira Bedi has given cricket and its association with women, a new flavor altogether, and she does all of it donning the best of sarees all the time. Post the launch of her own line of sarees two years ago, this multi -tasking diva is all set to dive into the world of fashion full on with her extended store in Khar, called M-The Store. Known for her love for sarees, Mandira decided to begin designing them two years ago, and the venture turned into a major breakthrough, and now with M-The Store, the dedication goes a step ahead. M-The Store is a multi -designer store, which has over 30 designers, personally chosen and curated by Mandira herself. “When I first launched my line of sarees, I received a lot of appreciation from

people of different ages. My clothes were wearable, colorful and trendy. But many a times customers would walk in and want something more apart from just sarees, and it was this very demand that made me take up the idea of M-The Store seriously. After careful consultation with a merchandiser, I chose the designers which I wanted to showcase in my store. Now we have everything, from tunics, to jumpsuits, anarkalis, semi bridal wear and even accessories”, explained Mandira as she informed us about the meticulous process of choosing designers. With an eye for arts and aesthetics, she wanted the store and its collection to be a reflection of her taste and persona. “Almost per cent
ninety of the

garments in the store are things which I would personally love to wear. I just did not want to go by big names. My focus, instead, was on showcasing a specially crafted and curated range. I have a very subjective taste and my bent is always towards a certain sensibility. I might not be willing to wear all of the outfits on showcase, but if they have a certain appeal, then I would love to have it showcased, because it might be a great cut or silhouette for someone else”, chirped the actress turned designer as
she took us through her vision for the store. On being asked who her favorite designer was, she swore by Ritu Kumar. “Her embroideries and color palates are distinct and have a vivid yet classy tone, which is what I absolutely adore. Also, if I were to comment on one film actress whose style is my personal favorite, then it would definitely be Deepika Padukone. She is always well turned out and I believe that she has the flair for carrying off any look with equal finesse.”
Bat of Honour:
A Tribute to the God Of Cricket! by Zeba Akhtar
We also asked her of her thoughts on our motto. To this she agreed saying that even though she loves travelling places and is always up to date on world fashion, her heart will always be local. “Desi is what I am, and desi is what I want to be, always!” If you want to get hold of fabulous garments and accessories with a twist, then M-The Store is where you must head next for sure!
I
n a country like India, where cricket is almost a religion, Sachin Tendulkar, sure is the God.
And just like every God, he too received a massive tribute in the form of a huge cricket bat, that too right in the middle of one of Mumbai’s most prime location of Carter road. With a weight of over two tonnes and almost 25 feet high, this is the largest steel bat in the world, and had been installed by Network 18 in association with Baba Siddique, the local member of the Legislative Assembly as an attempt to pay homage to the magic of Sachin Tendulkar for his contribution to the world of cricket in India! The initiative in fact was spear headed by the famous journalist Rajdeep Sardesai himself. The handle of the bat has the face of Tendulkar etched onto it, and forms a reflection whenever light falls on to it. It was unveiled by Sachin himself, on March 2nd, 2014 and people flocked in huge numbers to witness the event, and the massive bat was the subject of many frames for days at a stretch. Known as the Bat of Honour, the initiative was also backed by a mega campaign called #SachinForever where people and fans from all over were asked to also tweet their love for the master blaster which were later showcased on a special Wall of Honour. No other cricketer in the history of the country has ever received such a warm tribute. A symbol of the spirit of Mumbai and its love for the cricketing genius, this bat is the most befitting tribute that could have ever been, standing tall in one of the most crowded and sought after landmarks, with the majestic ocean for a backdrop.

THE HIVE Creating An Art Lab
- Sharin Bhatti, Co-Founder, The Hive Collaborative. Creative. Community. by Zeba Akhtar
NO, THOSE ARE NOT MY INFERENCES, THEY ARE THE THREE WORDS WHICH SHARIN, CO-FOUNDER OF THE HIVE LIVES BY. IN AN ATTEMPT TO UPLIFT AVENUES FOR ALTERNATE ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCES, SHARRIN AND CO-FOUNDER SUDEEP NAIR FOUNDED ‘THE HIVE’, FIVE YEARS AGO. WHAT STARTED OFF AS INITIALLY JUST A COWORKING SPACE, HAS TODAY GONE AHEAD TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER VENUES WHEN IT COMES TO THE ALTERNATE CULTURE SCENE IN MUMBAI.
W
e got into a chat with Sharin, and here’s what she had to say about their journey.
In a city like Mumbai, where Bollywood emanates from every nook and corner, creating a niche for something alternate seems both challenging and surprising. “When we first started off with The Hive five years ago, we had only one thing in mind which was to push beyond the envelope. Bollywood, for Mumbai is mass, and we do not intend to take away from that, but at the same time,
32
we were very aware of the fact that there was a dearth of avenues where artists who were not necessarily a part of the mainstream scenario could exhibit their work and channelize their creativity. Our first few gigs were generally poetry sessions and a few small plays, but we gradually kicked off and the responses from the audiences was more than just amazing.” The name, ‘The Hive’ comes from the concept of the hive mind in psychology which is a belief that everything in the world is an outcome of collaborative
November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Bandra-Khar Edition)
effort. Sharin too believes in the same. At The Hive, nothing actually takes place in isolation and it is always a joint endeavor to promote, uplift and celebrate art and its alternate forms. Situated in one of the typical Bandra style bungalows in Chium Village, The Hive has an entirely different charm of its own. It’s almost as if the space has a personality of its own, which is what the team has actively worked towards. Tiny and rounded stair cases, walls strewn with art works, overcrowded book shelves, a tiny café, and a maze like co
working space, along with a small performance area, this art experiment lab is sure to catch the eye, as well as the mind of any visitor. “Not only are we concerned about the artists, but at the same time we want to reach out to those audiences who are looking for more. There are people who are on the lookout for something that is beyond the regular movie-dinner dates, or drunk clubbing. Those who are in search of things which are not a part of the everyday. Our attempt is to bring all kinds of art as a part of the everyday, and to push people to think beyond the general and easily available.” A journalist by profession, Sharin eventually realized that her role at The Hive was something which is her actual calling. Not only does she aim to transcend the culture scene, she also wishes for people to come along and contribute towards the same. Like the meaning of The Hive goes, it cannot be an effort in isolation. The Hive is always a place buzzing with activity, be it pop ups, plays, poetry, work shops, performances or gigs and exhibitions. There is an approach at curating, as well as creating different experiences, it’s an attempt at marrying art, artists, innovation and audiences. With two new venues along with a larger performance area, The Hive is slowly and gradually growing, along with big plans to expand to different cities in the country. “Each city has a pulse of its own, and a place like The Hive should hence be present to capture this essence in each city. We are constantly incubating ideas, and this is like our mini experiment lab. The moment we think an idea clicks, we then go on to pitch it up to a larger scale, and the process is absolutely never ending”, beams Sharin as she takes us through the future plans for The Hive. With almost one event each day, and packed houses on open mic nights and other pop ups, The Hive’s vision of creating and delivering quality alternate entertainment experiences are definitely materializing.

What’s Happening UNQUOTE THE QUOTES While going through the quotes, I read some beautiful lines which I am sharing it with you all and here we go: KEEP GOING No matter what you do, no matter how many times you screw up and think to yourself “there’s no point to carry on”, no matter how many people tell you that you can’t do it- Keep Going. Don’t quit. Don’t quit, because a month from now you will be that much closer to your goal than you are now. Yesterday you said tomorrow. Make today count. These are some beautiful words to motivate you in achieving your success. In case if there is something which is refraining you from doing things for yourself, the two quotes given below might help you: “Lack of Direction, not lack of Time is the problem, we all have twenty-four hours day” – Zig Zagler I have seen a lot of people cribbing about not doing what they always wanted to do. But the thing is if you always wanted to achieve something for so long, how you can not have time for it. There might be two reasons for it; one- due to unpredictable situations a person is not able to achieve things. Two- the person is directionless. We all have same number of hours in a day, how we make use of them depends on us. A lot of things can be achieved if we have directions or if we have set goals and a clear mind about what we really want to achieve in our life or in a day. It may be a small thing initially, but eventually may lead us to achieve the things which once were our dreams. “I don’t know the key to success but the key to failure is trying to please everyone” – Bill Cosby You will end up forgetting yourself in order to please everyone. Stop doing that right away. You cannot make everyone happy, even if you most desperately want it. You need to be happy yourself first. You try to make so many people happy that at times you are the only one who is surrounded by sadness, stress and depression. People are responsible for their own happiness. You must have the key to your own happiness. So stop pleasing everyone around you and make time for yourselfa small moment into a big moment- that power is with us. Make use of it. You should be your own driving force. by Divya Panday

“I was learning French during my college days, and at times I would just think of how amazingly convenient would it be, if I had someone with whom I could just converse in French, mostly like an everyday casual conversation to polish my language skills. This led to another very vital thought, that I was not alone, and this was the plight of so many foreigners and expats who come to visit or stay in India. When you come to India, nobody teaches you the language, and sooner or later this can turn pretty agonizing.”
“Every day is a new adventure and Mumbai teaches me a lot. For me it is the city that slaps you in the face and then hugs you back. I decided on living in Bandra as most of my students reside or work around Bandra. Teaching Hindi to expats for me is not just a job, it has become a way of life and each day I learn as much as I teach. You could call it bilateral learning, if you please. I come in contact with different experiences, cultures, way of living and most importantly different stories. After graduation most of my close ones expected me to take up a job or go abroad for further studies, and when I took up teaching Hindi as a profession, there were mixed responses. But I am confident of what I am doing. I’ve carved a life for myself which I do not need to run away from and every morning when I wake up, I look forward to a day of new learning and interactions. The fact that I add value to someone’s life is what drives me.”
It is with this interest in mind, that Pallavi began giving Hindi lessons to people who did not belong to the country and had no clue of the language. The trouble with linguistically inclined courses in India is that there is no infrastructure in place which grants you with the qualification to be a
Teaching Hindi to expats who either have Indian partners, or are stationed in the country for work, she helps them articulate India, in its most basic and lucid forms, a great way to transfer not just language, but a major essence of life in the subcontinent.
Intrigued by the whole concept of teaching Hindi, I asked Pallavi, “Why Hindi?” Quick came the honest reply:

Chronicles of the Hood
MUMBAI’S CASTELLA
BANDRA FORT by Zeba Akhtar
T
he hood of Bandra never quite seems to stop surprising. History, art, culture, and lifestyle all come together to give it an extra edge over most places in Mumbai.
Now when we talk of history and culture around Bandra, the Castella De Aguada, commonly referred to as the Bandra Fort, is something that always comes to mind. Built in the 1600’s by the Portugese, this fort was initially constructed as a watch tower to keep an eye over the other islands of Mumbai and most importantly to keep a safe vision over the Mahim Bay. The tussle between the English and the Portugese never stopped, which is why this fort turned out to be a strategic point in Mumbai’s cultural as well as early political landscape. The name ‘Castella De Aguada’ means a place where one can find fresh water via a fountain. This was a true occurrence in those days, and hence the fort got its name from the same. Over the years, the fort faced a lot of threats, initially from the British, and also from the Marathas. In fact the British even demolished parts of it, but just like the spirit of Mumbai, it survived and stayed on. Today, Bandra Fort is one of the most sought after places for hooders in Bandra to go and spend a relaxed evening, watching the sunset with friends along with heart felt conversations. That apart, the place is also a great destination for budding photography and music enthusiasts. You can always spot groups of budding musicians in some corner, sitting and jamming away to glory. The same goes for photographers who flock to capture the beauty of the ruins along with the spectacular view of the sun and the sea which this majestic place has to offer. Such is the charm of the place, that in the recent years there have been many movements and petitions to revive and restore the glory of this once upon a time strategic spot in Mumbai. In fact even celebrities living in Bandra have come out in full support and have pledged and petitioned for the resurrection and restoration of the fort which has also been featured in a number of Bollywood movies already.

Currently under the care of Taj Land’s End, the Fort is on its way to recovery and is being taken full care of, when it comes to restoration efforts. If you are anywhere around Bandra, and are looking for something interesting to do with friends, then a trip to the Bandra Fort will make for a great time along with some beautiful photographs!

he end of school life marks the beginning of real life for every teenager. It is a period of transition from being an adolescent to becoming a young adult. Hundreds of young children eagerly await the moment when they secure admission in a reputed college of their choice. They look forward to the orientation and finally, a new journey of life begins for them. More than academics and independence, college life today has become more of an enriching experience in terms of culture. Almost every college in town has their own cultural festival. These festivals are held for the students, by the students, with the help and support of teachers and other staff of the college.
SVKM’s Mithibai College and Roposo present Kshitij’15, their annual international intercollegiate cultural festival, which ranks as one of the best college cultural festivals in town. Kshitij’s mascot is a double-headed phoenix, wherein the two heads symbolize the revival of the festival like the majestic bird which is reborn

from its own ashes. Today, in its ninth year, like its mascot phoenix, Kshitij has soared high and far, crossing new horizons with every passing year. Each year, the organizing team of Kshitij comes up with innovative themes and events to serve as a platform for students across the country to come and showcase their talents and skills. The festival garners a footfall of over 40,000 students each year, with participation from over 150 colleges and several international entries too. This year, the festival will be held on 26th, 27th and 28th of November, 2015, with a variety of pre-events scheduled to be held on 22nd November. The theme for the popular festival is Legion of Legends this year. The Chairperson of the festival, Parth V. Bhanushali said “It was only after the sudden death of the Missile Man Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, that we realized how short and unpredictable life is. It was when we lost a gem of our own that we realized that people who inspire us and change our lives are not going to be around forever, but their teachings and their work will forever be engraved in our minds and hearts. To pay tribute to innumerable such legends who have contributed to revolutionize our world, the organizing team of Kshitij 2015

have taken an initiative to reminisce the forgotten legends and thank the ones amongst us, by having a legendary theme for our festival.” This year, the festival witnessed a grand launch at the hands of Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandes and Siddharth Malhotra along with Rajiv Masand as the host. The event held an interactive session with the students of Mithibai as well as the core committee of the festival. Akshay Kumar himself appreciated the efforts and hard work put in by the workforce of Kshitij in putting up a festival as grand as Kshitij. The star cast of Brothers encouraged the young Kshitij-ites to keep up the good work and motivated them to work harder. Their presence and words
of appreciation seemed to boost the confidence and enthusiasm of the young college students because they put up another successful feat shortly after the launch of the festival. Recently, the star cast of the blockbuster movie Shaandaar held the exclusive launch of their title song “Shaam Shaandaar” with the theme launch of Kshitij’15. Alumni Shahid Kapoor and the stunning Alia Bhatt performed to the title track of their recently launched film. A hearty and fun-filled interactive session with the Kshitij-ites followed their rocking performance. Rising star Alia Bhatt stated that “I wish Kshitij was happening right now because it is the perfect occasion. Kshitij is so Shaandaar, so why can’t we be Shaandaar with Kshitij?” Such encouraging words sent a wave of pride and pleasure over the hearts of Kshitij-ites who put their sweat and blood in making their festival a great success. Besides stardom and star cast, Kshitij has been engaging in a lot of philanthropic work as well. The team of Kshitij recently visited an old age home to spend some time with the elderly to commemorate World Elderly Day.
the team of Kshitij. Registration for the national event has begun already and the preparation for the festival is in full swing. Although holidays have dawned on the students of Mithibai, one can still find the corridors buzzing with activity and hustle owing to the dedicated Kshitij-ites investing their time and effort in putting up a grand show. With the national event adding to their crown, Kshitij is sure to leave its mark on the map of India. It is truly said that college is a period of change for every individual, after all, college experience alters your life and lays the foundation of the person you are meant to be. With a festival as enriching and massive as Kshitij, students learn to take responsibility for their actions, to be a team player and also to handle pressure situations. It gives you a taste of real life, where mistakes are rewarded with lessons and good work is appreciated and encouraged. With the pace at which the Kshitij-ites are preparing for their upcoming festival, it can be definitely said that this year’s Kshitij is going to take the country by surprise and leave everyone with wide eyes and euphoria.
Dates to remember: 5th November – Contingent Leader’s Meet 22nd November – Pre Events 26th – 27th November – D Days
Each year, Kshitij hosts a plethora of events in various categories such as performing arts, literary arts, gaming and sports, photography, management and so on. Their events like Scorch the Floor, Just A minute, Hog-a-thon, Mr. & Ms. Kshitij and many more are the unique selling points of the festival that sets it apart from other college festivals. This year, the organizing team decided to take a step further and expand their festival across the country by hosting a national level event called ‘The Unlocal Vocal’. It is a Bollywood solo singing event for participants from over 700 colleges from all around the country. Out of all those participants, 16 top finalists will be shortlisted and invited to Mumbai to perform to a live audience and orchestra, in Bhaidas Hall, Juhu, which has a capacity of over 1200 people. The travel and accommodation cost for these finalists will be borne by

SCORPIO
(October 23rd November 22nd):
November is an exciting month in general, but since all of it is not about you, feel free to choose your battles! Uneasy verbal engagements need not escalate into quarrels, so step back and decide to learn from the differences. Choose to look after your health as a priority. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):
November is exciting and invigorating for you, though not much is about you. You can actually step back and relax in the knowledge that it is okay to just watch life unfold, and perhaps even just as exciting. There will be enough of your own activity to keep you busy to not go chasing after chimeras. Try a few new health routine ideas. CAPRICORN
(December 22nd–January 19th):
November will challenge your practical wisdom… and lose. So, whatever happens is situational, and it will be simple for you to see them as the end-result of earlier processes. Treat mistakes as opportunities to put things right and enhance your skills. Pay attention to your diet and maintain regularity for good health. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): In November, everything you do, think and say will fall just right. This is a gift of truth, so utilize this opportunity to be your truest self living in your ideal world, and watch how that attitude influences situations around you. Be alert that manipulation doesn’t enter into the equations. Do what you think is best for your own health, with utmost sincerity and calmness. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): Practice circumspect retreat in November. Step back from becoming emotionally invested in situations. With this distance, you will gain more knowledge about the variety life offers. You will also be subconsciously connecting strands of emerging lifepatterns, and this is best done in calmness and quiet. Your health routines need also be in the space of meditative slowing down and building awareness.
