I love savouring frosty popsicles on hot summer days — they always take me back to my childhood. Then there’s the sparkle of fireflies on steamy summer nights — always magical to behold. I suppose it’s summer’s simple pleasures that I appreciate most: It’s the season that never fails to put me in touch with my inner kid.

Summer love for me is watching all the incredible trees and flowers come alive. It seems so green overnight. I also love having summer drinks and BBQs with friends, soaking up the warmth and walks with Marvin, our dog.

Summer Love I hope my letter finds everyone healthy and safe. I am writing this during what’s starting to appear to be brighter days. As of this moment, half of Ontario’s adult population has received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We have waited patiently and eagerly, and I am so blessed to have also recently received my first dose. I already feel more optimistic about our future and I look forward to happier times that hopefully will come this summer. This year has been challenging, to say the least, but I have learned so much about myself. I have truly enjoyed spending quality time with my children and creating some wonderful memories with them. I also feel so blessed to have been able to create spectacular magazines with our incredible team. Thank you to all our loyal clients, supporters and readers for supporting our initiative and for propelling us. We truly couldn’t have done this without you. I truly love how everything is coming together so seamlessly, and I love working on new projects and initiatives. This year, we proudly collaborated with the CAFA awards and in this issue, you will get to see their virtual event and virtual red-carpet event written by our fashion editor Christine Rezvanian. I love supporting Canadian designers — we have so much wonderful talent here in Canada. Speaking of Canadian talent, we are doing something extra special with our upcoming artists to submit entries of their work. Our esteemed panel of judges voted virtually to decide who would be featured on the cover of the Design issue. I look forward to this showcasing our winner this fall. I wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer with their loved ones, and I look forward to seeing everyone soon. Until next time… Warmest regards,

Jennifer Lipkowitz Publisher

Made in the Shade Confession: Summer isn’t my favourite season — I’m a fall girl. (And no, it’s not the pumpkin-spice lattes — our family celebrates lots of birthdays in late-summer and autumn.) But now that we’re in the thick of the sun and heat, I revel in it, but not without a good SPF and my signature accessories — sunglasses. While I’m no fashionista (I leave the style section to the talented Christine Rezvanian), I can confidently say that I am an eyeglass queen, and proudly don the funkiest specs my favourite optician can find for me. (Like the ones in my photo, left. See what I mean?) I’ve been trekking to Bowmanville, Ont., for nearly 20 years to get glasses. Justin Barry, the very cool owner of Justin Barry Optical, is a mainstay on downtown King Street. With 26 years at his bustling store, Justin offers personal eyeglass consultations and has an experienced knack for picking the perfect specs for his clients. (In fact, my almost-teenaged daughter, Addyson, is following in my footsteps and recently got her first pair of glasses. Justin found a gorgeous rose-gold pair that really impressed her — no small feat for a tween, but I digress.) The first sunnies Justin selected for me is the pair I still wear most today — and I got them when I was pregnant with Addyson. They’re big, black and have white stripes on two sides. I still get compliments. Justin never disappoints when it comes to frames. He once picked up the craziest sunglasses he could find at an eyeglass show and conference in New York and brought them home, knowing I’d take those pink pointy frames in a heartbeat. Not only are sunglasses worthy of praise when it comes to style, they’re essential to protect your eyes. “Wearing sunglasses is like wearing sunscreen. protect the skin around your eyes from sun damage and wrinkles,” Justin says. “There are so many styles of sunglasses, too — whether you prefer something more reserved or you tend to like a funkier frame, there’s no excuse not to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.” He’s right. Luckily for him I’ll always be obsessed with eyewear. If you’re in need of a spectacular pair of specs, get in touch with Justin @jbarryoptical on Instagram. Tell him I sent you. See you next time,

SPARKLE WITH LOVE

15 14

You know what they say: Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. These brilliant diamonds and rings are truly a cut above.

16

By Sarah McGoldrick Photography by Adrian Armstrong Jewellery by Knar Jewellery Every proposal is unique, and your engagement ring should be no exception. Discovering the magic ring that captures the amazing, life-changing moments ahead is in itself a very

17

special moment to cherish. While some brides continue to choose a traditional solitaire diamond, others are using their engagement as an opportunity to create striking designs that mix cuts, metals and gems to create one-of-a-kind symbols of timeless love.

18

Emerald-cut diamonds, with their distinct elongated facets and stepped edges, are a modern choice for the bride who wants to make a statement. Princess-cut diamonds are a square-shaped diamond that has the sparkle and elegance brides love. Or, if you want a unique take on the classic round solitaire, an oval-shaped diamond with diamond-set halos is the latest in engagement ring glam — so lovely and feminine. Choosing the wedding band for your ceremony will depend on your engagement ring style, as well as your lifestyle, and whether you want to match your partner. This season, mixed metals are taking centre stage at the altar, with carbon fibre and gold bands and gold and platinum being the most popular pairings for brides and grooms alike. Let your wedding rings tell the story of your love with a design and setting that is as unique and special as your love.

SUMMER FASHION DRESS: STEVEN LEJAMBE

WE’VE MISSED YOU! This summer is the perfect excuse to glam up your style with vibrant colours, glamorous sleeves, gorgeous sunglasses and hats that will make you want to stay in the sun!

I am a summer sunshine kind of person, and always have a hat on, of course! I just love how summer makes me feel good, whether I’m taking a walk in the woods, spending a day at the beach or working in my garden. I am obsessed with summer fun and even more obsessed with its fashion, especially this year. I have high hopes for summer — this season is bound to renew our excitement for getting out of our sweats and getting dressed. It has been a long rotation between pyjamas and loungewear, and I am super excited to see voluminous sleeves, sequins, frills and bright hues. This season, everything is about more — more colour, more fun. With a focus on Canadian brands and retailers, I have picked out some of my favourites. I hope you find something you love.

we love about design is that styles always cycle in and out of fashion, but when they are having their revitalized moment, they always have a new and refreshed spin. Take Raindrops, for example; a contemporary pendant fixture that reflects a blend of old and new. Its mid-century dome composition and metallic gold lacquer pairs perfectly with the unique addition of the 18 transparent raindrops in the centre. When the light is on, the drops are immersed with colour, creating a glimmer effect and providing your space with a beautiful ambience. As a direct light source, Raindrops is a great option for your dining room. Another fixture that we love for a dining room is Scarlett (available in early fall), whose dramatic size will certainly lead to a conversation around the table. Norm Shubat, the president of EuroStar Windows & Doors, will tell you his selection of windows and doors is anything but average. In fact, he says they’re extraordinary, just like the homes his products gracefully enhance. Shubat has travelled the world, from Germany to Belgium to

A WINDOW INTO MINIMALISM Windows and doors don’t just provide a glimpse into the home — they are one of the most important home design elements reflecting the client’s personality and style. By Sarah McGoldrick

Slovenia, to bring together the most stunning offerings for clients who want to turn their windows and doors into showpieces. He says this season, clients are exploring minimalism, moving away from highly detailed and ornate pieces to more understated and European-inspired designs. “Clients are using commercial-style products for a minimalist look,” he says, noting features like wrought-iron accents and intricate detailing are being replaced with all-glass façades and invisible framing. He recently added a new line of sleek, flat parcel doors with concealed hinges and finger-point access control. The panel is centre flush to the door and hardwired into the home. The four-inch-thick doors provide the highest level of security while seamlessly blending into the room’s minimalist aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from their European counterparts, Shubat says homeowners are also choosing windows that provide extra security with a tilt-and-turn function that prevents unwanted entry. He says these windows are the ideal choice for clients who enjoy a gentle breath of fresh air. “You can even leave them open on a rainy day.” He also says clients are using windows and doors interchangeably, as a way to open up living spaces and bring the outdoors in, such as replacing brick-and-mortar walls with full-length glass walls with partitions. One of his most recent projects saw the removal of

70

the kitchen wall that bordered the backyard and replaced it with a wall of glass with a lift-andslide glass door. “They were done renovating their kitchen and wanted to take the next step up,” he says, adding the continuous flow of light and easy access to the backyard creates an ideal open space for entertaining or relaxing. Some homeowners are choosing to take this a step further with stunning glass dividers that gracefully slide in and out of pockets or fold to open living spaces, allowing homeowners to enjoy the freedom of movement with the thinnest possible footprint, without having to block out light or divide rooms with walls. “Clients want hybrid products with minimal sashes so all you see is glass,” he says. “We specialize in hard-to-get products.” He says his designers can create glass doors up to an impressive 20-feet wide and 10-feet high, which still maintain exceptional comfort on the hottest or coldest Canadian days. Window and door frames are also being given the minimalist treatment with clients choosing thin profiles. This allows the window or door to become the focal point without extra visual distraction. The desire for austere luxury continues to be the trend this summer, with homeowners choosing muted colours that still give the feeling of grandeur. Shubat says clients are moving away from stark black doors in favour of matte textured black, blue and grey colours, which according to Shubat, provides more depth of field and a very rich feeling. For added privacy, traditional clear glass windows have shifted to acid-etched or reflective glass panels. Shubat is excited to see the direction window and door design is moving. “I think we will continue to see a super-sleek, minimalist look that is modern and contemporary.”

COMFORT AND JOY

There’s a renewed individualistic approach to decor, thanks to the pandemic. Here’s what Decorium has noticed about how buying has changed and what customers are looking for. By Stacy Lee Kong

Curtis Bedroom Collection Made in Canada. Available in king and queen sizes, custom finishes and fabrics.

Tara Lindsay, the vice-president of advertising and a buyer at Toronto’s Decorium, isn’t thinking about trends right now. “Today is not about trends; today is about individuality and what people love and want,” she says. “Families want to live more comfortably together. And those who reside alone want to feel comforted by all their favourite pieces surrounding them. People are needing and wanting those special things that translate to comfort.” She credits the ongoing pandemic for this individualistic approach to decor — for more than a year, our homes have had to do quadruple duty, standing in for our offices, gyms, restaurants and playgrounds. Lindsay says her clients are reacting by analyzing their homes to figure out how it can best serve their family’s wants and needs. But she has noticed some patterns in what customers are looking for. There’s most definitely been an increased interest in functional

The idea to open a curated boutique, full of beautiful items sure to inspire any homeowner or gift-giver, came to her after passing by a stunning space near her High Park home. She needed a bigger space to host her expanding design team and the storefront windows were just begging for beautiful pieces to reflect her personal style. Today, after months of hard work and renovations (completed by Tercet Construction Group), Care Creative’s Pop-Up Shop has opened its doors to shoppers looking to beautify you’re greeted with a stunning custom-created mural by Canadian artist Derek Simmers. Equipped to safely greet shoppers, the shelves are lined with mostly Canadian items that Bishop handpicked herself — from a delicious selection of teas and perfect leather backpacks to home-decor accents and even canine couture. While Bishop prides herself on offering the ultimate in-store shopping experience, online shoppers can also easily order items online at shopcarecreative.ca. “If this pandemic has taught me anything, it’s to find the beauty in life. LEADER OF THE PACK

Weavers Art showcases gorgeous modern rugs from artist Erbil Tezcan. By Catherine MacIntosh

Over the course of his 30 years in the rug industry, Michael Pourvakil has seen a lot of change. “Ten years ago, we weren’t selling a lot of colourful rugs,” says the founder of Toronto’s Weavers Art. These days, 90 percent of their sales are transitional or contemporary designs. Traditional designs are not what people are after any longer. “Fashion changes so fast. It’s only a year or two before people want something else,” he says. It seems the modern rug, however, is here to stay, even if it takes on varied incarnations, colours and textures. “These are going to be the heirlooms of the future,” says Pourvakil. A highlight of the company’s vast collection is ABOVE: OCEAN AQUA — Ocean Aqua is a design by Erbil’s son, Anka Tezcan. Under the tutelage and guidance of his father, Anka re-imagined the ripples on the surface of natural bodies of water into a rug design. LEFT: SHEER — An ongoing theme for this artist is the belief that there is beauty everywhere and life is simple. He is known to say, “I love what I do.” This rug emanates that feeling.

the work of New Jersey-based rug artist Erbil Tezcan. Pourvakil says he stumbled upon Tezcan’s booth at a New York trade show back in 2011. He was immediately drawn to his beautiful rugs, buying 17 of Tezcan’s initial 25 designs to carry at Weavers Art. Fast-forward to today and Tezcan has amassed a collection of international carpet design awards and has shown his work at the Smithsonian Museum. Weavers Art now carries more than 70 of his unique designs, many named after New York City neighbourhoods or music (Tezcan is also a talented musician).

“IT’S JUST AMAZING TO BE ABLE TO CREATE SUCH HARMONY WITH THAT MANY SHADES.”

“His work really has soul,” he says, adding that Tezcan’s rugs have an incredible tactile quality. “His rugs blend silk and wool. The two go through the carding and spinning process together. It’s a level beyond anything else.” Tezcan, originally from Turkey, worked for a rug company upon moving to the U.S. as a young man. He has impressive skills and it’s his artistry that captures people’s attention. “Most of his production is at 150 knots by 150 knots, that’s 22,500 knots per square foot,” Pourvakil says, “which really shows in the movement and the shading of the rug. His designs are so much more complex. And while most rugs carry three, five or seven colours, his will have up to 49 colours in some designs. It’s just amazing to be able to create such harmony with that many shades.” TOP: REGGAE — Whimsical yet distinct, peaceful yet powerful, Reggae is Inspired by the designer’s love of music and his own experience playing classical guitar. This simple and sophisticated design evokes much emotion as the name so aptly applies. BOTTOM: SUMMIT— This design is a tribute to Mount Everest in the beautiful country of Nepal. The artist and creator of this design spends much time in this spiritual land. This design is the artist’s imagination of how the view from the summit of Mount Everest would translate onto a canvas in full colour.

Tezcan’s sophisticated designs — some based on his own photography — have a depth and dimension not seen in other products. Many have a 3D effect, which adds to the tactile appeal of these works of floor art. Part of this is due to Tezcan’s attention to detail at every step of the process, spending quality time working alongside weavers in Nepal. For Pourvakil, rugs like Tezcan’s are the benchmark. He sees most clients veering toward unique contemporary pieces. “It’s like modern buildings. Each one is different.”

Colour is used in two ways — either bold and mattified, or in soft neutrals, pastels and textured. When we say bold and mattified, we are talking about the Moroccan, concrete and graphic tiles that are making their way back into people’s homes. Customers are having fun playing with patterns and experimenting with these types of tiles in powder rooms, laundry rooms and even feature pieces on their backsplashes. For those who are less daring but are still looking for something unique, people are reaching for the bohemian, imperfect and handcrafted look. This is where many of the pastels and soft neutrals come into play. Many are using this trend on their backsplashes and feature

outside, getting fresh air and exercise are so vital to their overall wellbeing. Now that camps will be open, I will be looking into participating in backyard camps — maybe Brooke will run one herself. This will get the kids outside and in a controlled and safe environment. Furthermore, I will do my best to organize safe outdoor COVID-19-friendly playdates, basketball games, bike rides and trips to the park, which are all easy and cost-effective. Letting kids come up with some of their own ideas can be pleasantly surprising as well and takes the onus off Mom or Dad. My kids have often, on their own, turned on the sprinkler and spent the whole afternoon laughing and eating popsicles on my front lawn. Some of my best pictures have captured these precious moments. Canada came together to celebrate Canadian fashion and feel alive again for the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) Virtual Gala. By Christine Rezvanian Portraits by George Pimentel The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards held its seventh annual gala event for the first time in virtual format on May 19, 2021. Living Luxe is proud to have been a media partner for this incredible event. It was a fabulous evening of celebrating emerging talent and outstanding achievement in the Canadian fashion industry. Nominees and supporters came together on this historic evening in support of each other and in celebration of Canadian talent. “The night was filled with so many incredible moments, but most of all we all felt such a great sense of pride and strength in our fashion community. The love and support for one another was felt across the country,” says Vicky Milner, president of CAFA. The event brought in more than 100 nominees live from around

been cancelled or moved virtually. We have all come to truly appreciate being together and miss events and interactions we may have taken for granted in the past. Many of us have also missed the opportunity to dress up. Usually with charity events, galas and many other exciting occasions there is no shortage of opportunities to glam up in Toronto. Celebrity photographer George Pimentel knows this very well. “I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, going out, day in and day out photographing everybody all glammed up — it was so much fun!” he says. No stranger to the red carpet, he has photographed red carpet events such the Oscars, Golden Globes and the Toronto International Film Festival. He has photographed more celebrities than can be listed here. Toronto is very fortunate to also have Pimentel photograph many local events for charities such as SickKids Foundation and CANFAR. Nevertheless, CAFA has always held a special place for Pimentel.

Mistress of Her Domain The House of Lori Morris Design is an absolute force. Lifestyle editor Jeanne Beker spoke to the inimitable artist about her background, business and aesthetic, and found there’s so much more to this multifaceted designer than meets the eye. This bodacious central hall is an overload of dramatic elegance, combining traditional architectural details with sleek contemporary lines and a bold black-andwhite palette. The space was reworked to facilitate a magnificent sightline from the foyer to the central hall and adjacent family room. Custom marble floor designs mimic the ceiling detail and graphic integrity of the space while elevating the luxe factor in spades.

big industry like there is now — no platform to showcase your work on social media. So I graduated from university but knew I didn’t want to take that path. I went to design school and never looked back.” OPPOSITE PAGE: TKTKTK THIS PAGE: TKTKTKTKT

It was the heady and opulent ’80s when Morris, then in her early twenties, took her first stab at designing. You could say she went into it a little blindly: All she knew was that she wanted to do something fabulous with her life, so she went for it. “It was a platform to express a creativity that I knew was there but didn’t really know could be translated into a business. This was a long time ago and women weren’t really in business and there weren’t a lot of doors open,” she reminisces. But her strong drive and passionate belief in herself saw her through. “I really do believe in myself. I always have, even when I started designing,” says Morris. “I was so young and there were trends that had nothing to do with what I was doing. I didn’t know that people would come to say, ‘Oh, you’re bucking the trend!’ I didn’t even know what the trends were. I just did what I believed in all the way through, and I didn’t let anybody stop me. I just wanted to do it, so I was just going to push my way through, with doors slammed in my face for many years, but I didn’t care. I was a woman, but I was young, so I just kept going. I made a million, trillion mistakes. And here we are.” Morris credits her Czech, Russian and German ancestry for giving her a broader understanding of design and an appreciation for elegance and artistry. She says it’s both nature and architecture that greatly inspire her, and she particularly loves both modern and French design. “I basically infused the two genres together and developed my own style called ‘Sexy French,’” she coos. But as proud as she is of her distinctive personal aesthetic, she also enjoys tailor-making environments to suit the whims of her clients. “It’s just a matter of whether a client wants something ultra-modern or modern chic or more eclectic or Versailles-inspired or whatever they want. I’m an artist to the core with no rules. I can do whatever you want.” Knowing what kind of feeling her clients are after is paramount, of course, because, as she puts it: “It’s a very emotional-based industry.” She goes on to say that it’s also a very emotional-based finished product that she’s responsible for. “Your home is where you live; I don’t care what colour it is, because it’s not about that. It’s about creating a feeling, and that’s what we do, and we decide, with the help of our clients, what it is they want to feel.” Studying psychology and sociology at university undoubtedly helped Morris in this people business that she so loves. “We’d like to ensure we really take care of our clients because it’s a ginormous financial commitment, especially with the luxurious, high-end business I’m in and what we create,” she explains. “We want everybody to have a very happy experience — husband and wife and kids — we want it to be as enjoyable as possible. So yes, managing clients’ expectations is a very large part of this process, for sure.” Everybody’s interpretation of home and what it means is something different.

111

And there’s no question that this pandemic era has changed many of our attitudes about our abodes. “I think it’s permanently changed forever,” Morris concurs. “With people staying in their home for this length of time, they’re understanding what their homes really need. It’s become a different sort of experience, as opposed to just somewhere to sleep, eat and watch TV. It’s now become your oasis. People just want their home as an extension of their lifestyle, whatever their lifestyle may be.” Morris also realizes that people are trying to adjust their home life for the best possible experience. “They want it to be a happy, restful place that also includes a lot of fun and activities,” she says. “They’re thinking, ‘Where can we have our party? And where can we hang out? Where can the kids play? Where’s our adult room? Where’s our entertaining space?’ And I think they’re wondering, ‘So what if travel never happens again? How much of a spa do we want in here? Or how much of a bowling alley? Or do we want Views from the music room reveal a symphony of light and sophisticated opulence from the graciously curved sofa slathered in a silvery-grey velvet, to the sleek bronze mirror coffee table and rich chocolate velvet club chairs — all custom LMD. where the family could sit and read or relax away from the main seating areas — she put a covered daybed next to the rocky fish pond. Each of these spaces are full of lush greenery and flowers — there are even potted palm trees to really create that breezy, retreat feel. Of course, Aiken also chose the beautiful, bright palette. “I wanted something that would really offer great impact; something that would pop,” she says. When she told the homeowner of her intention to go with hues of red across the seating areas and for the flowers in the garden, the client was ecstatic. “They painted the back of their kitchen doors red to go with the yard,” she says. “When I’m doing a garden, I always pick plants I love that go together well. I tend to gravitate toward exotic plants, but I also used more common ones in this garden, like the red geraniums in this space. I love flowers that add drama and a wow factor.” It goes without saying that the homeowners were overjoyed when Aiken did the LEFT: The patio has a phenomenal outdoor kitchen and grilling area. They were both so pleased with the space that they hired Aiken to do their home’s interior design. “I started with the outside and then moved inside, where I brought in some of the red. I really brought a piece of their outdoors in.”

“The most beautiful part of this home is its extremely elegant presence on the street. It’s a real standout home in terms of curb appeal,” says Verna Debono, senior luxury sales representative for Hammond International Properties and certified luxury home marketing specialist. She says the home’s exterior offers a classical and timeless European elegance in an estate setting. She notes homes like this do not hit the market that often in the Greater Toronto Area. As visitors step into the 12,000-square-foot villa, they are instantly captivated by the curved grand staircase with wroughtiron detailing that beckons them to explore the rest of this gorgeous abode. The double-capacity ceilings — graced with a rustic, Medieval-style chandelier — reaching a towering 30-feet to provide an open and inviting palazzo feeling. “It has warmth as soon as you walk in,” Debono says. This continues throughout the home as each room gracefully pulls you into the next for ease of entertaining. Just off the main entrance, the sitting and dining areas provide a cozy, yet majestic space to catch up with friends. An elegant crystal chandelier provides a subtle glow against wine glasses and sparkling silverware.

THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR When designer Rosalia Fazzari’s friends and neighbours decided it was time to move, they called on one of their closest friends to bring their dream-home vision to life. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Larry Arnal

I

t’s a delight when a designer has a great relationship with his or her clients, but it’s an absolute thrill when they’ve been friends for two decades. This was the situation designer Rosalia Fazzari found her-

self in when her neighbours and good friends of 20 years decided it was time to sell their house and build their dream home in Mississauga. “They bought the land and asked me if I would build and design their house. Every detail was in my hands, from working with the architect on the build to adding the final design touches inside. It was a labour of love,” Fazzari says proudly.

RIGHT: The seating area next to the kitchen is where the couple enjoy reading the paper and drinking their morning coffee.

Her friends and clients knew they wanted a 3,000-square-foot bungalow on their property. Their must-have list included a big kitchen and area to entertain (they’re quite the hosts), but they didn’t want a formal dining room — just an open space where they could welcome and relax with friends. They also wanted a smart home with everything automated (including the drapery), hardwood flooring throughout and a showpiece wine cellar. The basement would include a living area for their son, as well as a games centre and a 120-inch big-screen television where they watch movies on their huge sectional. They had several ideas but the main thing they wanted was comfort. “This was the only challenge I had with this house because it is completely open. As soon as you open the front door, you’re looking at a fully open space, so I had to make sure it felt cozy, omfortable and very liveable.” Fazzari made bold and impressive architectural and design decisions, such as building the wine cellar on the main floor instead of in the basement, and painting wood beams, which had been underwater for years, and installing them on the ceiling in the family room to define the space and add a rustic feel. Her choices ensured the home had a special uniqueness and individuality that she knew would suit her friends beautifully.

L I V IN G A RT Gallery 133 transformed a small family business into a destination gallery rife with bold, contemplative works. By Catherine MacIntosh

When someone walks into Gallery 133 and sheepishly says, “I don’t know anything about art,” owner Paul Wise replies matter-of-factly: “Yes, you do. You know what you like and that’s what’s important.” It’s this friendly and disarming approach that’s been a hallmark of the family-run business for 30 years, empowering its clients and bringing them back again and again. It’s all about nurturing strong relationships — between the gallery, the artists and the clients. Wise’s daughter, Vanessa Axelrad, continues that tradition as director, working alongside her father. She quickly puts you at ease, sharing her passion for the art and obvious pride of the artists themselves. Wise started the business in 1990 as a trade gallery for the design community after owning a successful framing and wall decor art business, which catered to large department stores, hotels and

When asked about the future, Wise says, “I am very proud of the work Vanessa has done. I see her building additional opportunities to have group and individual exhibitions, which I know will grow the gallery significantly. I believe it’s important to show new work and new ideas. If you are not innovative, you fall away.” Though disparate, the works carried by the gallery all evoke strong feelings in the viewer — many require more than a brief view to truly absorb their full artistic expression. There is a quiet yet powerful presence to many of them. Looking at art online is one thing, but to see them in person is quite another. The high realism works of Adriana Molea mesmerize and move as you walk around them, and the assertive lines of Pietro Adamo’s abstracts command your attention. The gallery’s expansive space allows for an excellent viewing perspective. It’s quite obvious when visiting Gallery 133 that they are not only selling art, but they are living and breathing it, too.

It wasn’t a difficult task for De Simone to give the Volpes that inviting feeling. Upstairs in the principal bedroom, De Simone designed the custom-made headboard, which features detailed nailheads in a pretty pattern. The feature wall has mirrored doors, which act as dressing mirrors, and there’s plenty of storage behind the doors. The rest of the wall has a contemporary 3D tile that creates a wave-like look and feel. The TV and fireplace add coziness while the feathered poof light fixture appeals to Louise’s love of all things glam. The benches at the foot of the bed bring in more of that custom detail the homeowners were so keen to incorporate. “They were just so excited and happy when they saw their new space. It really exceeded their expectations, and I’m glad — it took about a year for this project to be completed because of the pandemic,” says De Simone. “The Volpes are so proud of their space and it was a pleasure working with them, as always.”

A Fresh Take This transitional abode is all about the details. Architectural designer Marin Zabzuni really impressed the homeowners with this remarkable space. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Artur Zaitsev

138

This is what Marin Zabzuni, the architectural designer who designed this home, calls “transitional chateau.” The founder and owner of Torontobased design firm Contempo Studio, Zabzuni met the homeowners of this brilliant abode when he was introduced by an existing client. The home, in Toronto’s busy Cedarvale (which is bustling with new developments springing up throughout the community), was designed in 2018 and built in late-2019 to early-2021; the homeowners just moved in last spring. It was created with a Forest Hill look and feel in mind — a luxurious space with streamlined, clean details. “From the initial design to the finished build, it took a couple of years — a lot of time, sweat and hard work was spent creating this amazing space,” says Zabzuni. “The owners really wanted a The kitchen is clean and streamlined. real estate agent and she does staging and design work, so they both have exceptional taste,” he says. “They were involved in the design and layout. It took the whole team to create this incredible project.” What was created is a soothing and luxe open-concept space that spans 3,600 square feet across three floors, but what makes this place so remarkable are the features that carry through the house. From stunning hardwood floors in a herringbone pattern to the wood slats above the kitchen hood and on the island, wood figures prominently in the architecture and design decisions Zabzuni and his team made. “The slats — which continue into the family room and upstairs — add visual interest. We didn’t want to do the typical range hood and the standard island design. It adds spunk and softens the look of the kitchen. It also complements the colour palette and adds congruency with the stairs.” This staircase is an architectural marvel. Curved from the first to third floors, it’s elegant and beautifully sculpted. “It offers some contrast and gives the house a real contemporary feel,” he says. It also makes the main floor feel very grand and opulent when you enter the house, and the large windows bring in a plethora of natural light. Another technique that Contempo Studio repeats throughout the home are the sharp accents they bring in to contrast the light walls and wood features: Their use of black and brass are used to make a dramatic statement throughout the bright space. “The brass details in the lighting above the kitchen island and faucet, as well as the black window casings and door hardware upstairs, for example, make the space feel even more up-to-date and fresh. These elements really offer a hint of luxury and they pair beautifully with the wood floors and wood slats found throughout.” The arch detail used in the hallway on the second floor where the four bedrooms are speaks to the transitional design. (The third floor brings in many of the same elements, and includes an open den, study and lounge area. There’s also a very private, very beautiful balcony on this level.) “There’s so much congruency throughout the house and we certainly maximized the layout. The palette is

uniform, and so are the relaxed, welcoming details that makes this house so inviting and visually interesting. It has hints of modern and contemporary design, which makes it a great transitional space,” says Zabzuni. “It just feels very welcoming — like a place you’d be proud to call home.” While there were a lot of challenges initially with the lot and obtaining city requirements, the homeowners are both proud and ecstatic with the way the property turned out. “We had to be creative and clever in our design decisions, but it was all worth it. They love it; they’ve been getting a lot of compliments on all aspects of their home. The finished product made all the effort so worthwhile. “The homeowners are a young couple, and their family is growing. It was great timing for them to finally get the home of their dreams — they welcomed their second child a few months before moving in.” Their growing family can now put down roots and truly make this house a home.

A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW This dramatic home, built by Red Design + Build, is a true showpiece — both inside and out. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Ryan Fung

Derrick Robinson, the founder of Red Design + Build, a Toronto-based design and construction firm, couldn’t have imagined what he’d be up against when he started building this Etobicoke home in December 2019. The tear-down-andrebuild project was finished this spring, but not before COVID-19 wreaked havoc on Robinson’s plans. “We did this house in the midst of the pandemic and we had to pivot — we quickly adapted to supply-chain shortages, closures

and had to procure what we needed as fast as we could,” he says. “But we did it and what we created was a visually stunning home that the homeowner always wanted to build.”

145

This 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home was designed to suit the homeowner’s needs and his specific list of desired details. “He didn’t want any wood on the exterior — he wanted something that would be easy to maintain and manage. He also requested tile in the kitchen — not the engineered hardwood that runs through the rest of the home. One of the key things he asked for was to create bedrooms that would almost act as hotel rooms — each with a sitting area and desk space — for his grown children to feel comfortable in. He also wanted to be set up for entertainment — he enjoys hosting friends and family,” Robinson explains. “The homeowner is a past client, so I understood his style. He knew how he wanted to use the space and we collaborated back and forth during the build.” Robinson and his team were vital in every aspect of the job. The TOP: Wood is used as an accent throughout, and there are custom built-ins in the dining room. ABOVE: The kitchen is dramatic and dark, with gorgeous hints of gold.

exterior architectural design of this modern-style home was done by Marin Zabzuni, the founder and owner of Toronto-based architectural design firm Contempo Studio, and the interiors were done by RZ Interiors. “This home is designed like a man in a well-tailored suit with a nice gold watch. It’s as custom as it gets,” says Robinson. “It has many dark, dramatic elements that pair perfectly with gold accents.”

146

147

LEFT: The home’s façade was designed by Marin Zabzuni of Contempo Studio. BELOW: The house was designed for a gentleman and his adult sons and daughter, so it’s spacious and has a more masculine vibe.

Take the kitchen. This is a dark, moody space, with grey Italian porcelain on the wall and matching dark-grey cabinetry, but it has shiny gold accents, such as the faucet and light fixtures above the island. “It’s very dramatic and this was done purposely. It’s a very masculine space — the homeowner has three sons — but it’s also female-friendly for his daughter,” he says. The same tile in the kitchen is used on the wall in the family room where the fireplace is for added impact and continuity. “The family room is where everyone comes together when the homeowner is cooking. It’s comfortable and spacious, and brings in elements from other rooms, such as the wood built-ins.” Upstairs, the vision for the second floor was to lighten things up. The master bedroom is bright and airy — it’s hotel chic. That’s a style that carries on into the other three bedrooms. “They’re all set up to look like a hotel room. You could imagine the details — such as the separating wall in the master — in a really posh hotel. The homeowner’s adult children each have sitting areas and desks in their spaces, which works well for them.” The ensuite off the master is sexy — it’s dramatic without being overwhelming, with porcelain covering the floor and porcelain slabs on the wall.

148

TOP: TKTKTKTKKTKTKT BELOW: TKTKTKTKKTKTKT

Perhaps the centrepiece of the home, though, is the exposed staircase. “Instead of it being behind a wall, we wanted to open it up and let it flow. The staircase is in the centre of the home and the glass that surrounds it really heightens the drama. It also allows so much light to come through. It’s a central feature,” Robinson says. While the staircase is the interior’s showpiece, there’s no denying the exterior is the showpiece of the neighbourhood. Robinson sourced the stone and brick and the team opted for a very dark façade but added a light stone to contrast the overall look and feel. They then placed ACM panels horizontally, which adds to the visual interest of the house. “What’s more,” says Robinson, “the windows are huge. We did this purposely. Not only do they bring the outside in and create plenty of natural light, but they also make the decor and homeowners part of the overall design and artwork. It’s no secret that passersby can look directly into the home during the day and admire the design.”
