Celebrate Good Times I hope my letter finds you healthy and well. I am writing this letter nearly two weeks after celebrating my 40th birthday. The night before my special day, we hosted our annual party recognizing Living Luxe’s growth and success, and it was such a joy to fête the magazine and such an exciting milestone in my life. I enjoyed spending the evening with my closest friends, clients and my team. Thank you to everyone who attended — your support means so much to me. Thanks again to Nick and Nadia Di Donato for hosting us at Liberty Grand — it was a magical place to celebrate. (You can read more about this special event on page 112.) For our Summer issue, we’re thrilled to feature the talented Trish Stratus on our cover. She’s a powerhouse who has dedicated her life not only to her children and family, but to excelling in her sport. I know our editor-in-chief, Lisa van de Geyn, had a fabulous time speaking with her for our cover story on page 116. “Trish was super cool — down-to-earth, friendly, smart and exceptionally driven. She really inspired me,” Lisa told me. Thank you to our cover shoot crew, led by our wonderful creative director, Jennifer Douglas, for their hard work. And a special shoutout to Hotel X Toronto for their hospitality and The Rosarium for the lovely floral arrangements on set. As you read through this issue, you’ll also notice we devoted some of our editorials to weddings. (’Tis the season, right?) Among a few stories that follow this theme is one that showcases the magical wedding of our friends, Dr. Justin and Dr. Carissa Di Donato. Anthony and I attended their romantic nuptials at Casa Loma last year and it was a one-of-a-kind experience we’re excited to share with you. While I have you, I’m beyond excited to announce our preliminary plans for the second Living Luxe Design Expo and the first Living Luxe Awards. This event will take place next spring, from April 18 to 21, 2024, and will feature award-winning designers and some of the top lifestyle businesses in the city. We will open the weekend with our second City Couture night in support of SickKids. Follow our social media (@livingluxemagazine) in the coming months for more information on attending these events and how to collaborate with us.

To a Remarkable Woman from Her Son As I sit here writing this, on my first Mother’s Day without Mama, I can’t help but stare at my screen. I’m trying to find the words to truly describe my memories and the emotions I’m feeling, but it’s not easy. I wish I could share with you all the great things my mother has done for our family — including my three sisters and me — over the years, but I feel it would just be inadequate. There isn’t enough space, not only on this page, but in this entire book, to express everything I want to. I will, however, share one remarkable thing I’d love for all our readers and partners to know: My mother was my biggest fan. One of my favourite things to do after an issue came off press was to bring her a copy of the magazine — she was always so genuinely excited and made me feel so special. Now, as this issue — the first one since her passing — goes to press, I’m reminded I’ve lost my biggest fan. Death is a moment in time where life becomes final, ending the reality we’ve come to know and cherish. No matter your beliefs of what comes after, the connection you have with the people you love who’ve passed is forever changed. Mama, I miss you and I will love you forever. Happy Mother’s Day.

Ready, Set, Pack! Sick of fast fashion and unable to find an affordable luxury weekender bag, the four founders of Monte & Coe decided to create one. That was eight years ago, but we’re still loving their wares. Made from sustainable, luxurious wool, sourced from a family-run mill in Italy, the Wool Weekender Bag in nude is an opulent travel essential this summer. Accented with a salvaged light-denim stripe, the interior features one zipper pocket and two easy-access exterior pockets, providing ample space for all your travel needs. Each piece is hand-cut and stitched in Toronto and Montreal with artisanal skill, ensuring impeccable quality in each item. Whether you’re headed to the Hamptons or the Cape, this chic ethically made bag is big on style and substance. monteandcoe.com

Travel the World with Louis Vuitton Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Goldberger has penned a must-have coffee table book for architecture and design enthusiasts. Louis Vuitton Skin: Architecture of Luxury offers an extensive exploration of luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton’s spectacular facades across the globe. Called the “skin” in architectural parlance, the book takes readers on an exhilarating world tour of the Maison’s most distinctive stores — from Sao Paulo to Seoul, Miami to Mexico City, the book visits Louis Vuitton locations that collectively form what Goldberger calls, “The most radical rethinking of the concept of brand identity in our time.” Undercutting the expectation that a vast luxury company must assert itself behind standardized visual codes, the Louis Vuitton stores highlighted in this book are each dramatically different urbanistic and architectural expressions, all unlike anything the Maison has previously designed. assouline.com

SUMMER SOPHISTICATION Contributing fashion editor and stylist from The Room at Hudson’s Bay, Jenna Bitove-Naumovich, calls summer her favourite season for fashion. Here’s what she’s coveting now. By Jenna Bitove-Naumovich Portrait by Natasha Gerschon Hair by Tony Pham Makeup by Jessica Savedra
Goodbye cold weather, hello heat! Summer fashion is my favourite, and with the lazy days of the season upon us, I’m thinking about what to wear to special events. There’s such a fabulous variety of refreshing and vibrant colours, as well as light, sheer fabrics that flow in the breeze this time of year. For summer 2023, there’s a huge focus on butterfly prints (in appliqués and 3D forms, especially), whether on dresses, handbags or sandals. ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF THE HUDSON BAY COMPANY
(Honestly, nothing says “whimsical summertime” like a piece adorned with a butterfly.) Of course, we’re also seeing stunning floral prints on sheer flowing fabrics that show off the silhouette. I’ve absolutely fallen for Oscar de la Renta’s hydrangea print this season. Finally, it wouldn’t be summer without pretty crochet-knit dresses and barely-there crop tops. Throw in some crystallized sky-high platforms, rose appliqués, super-large bows and you’ve got the ultimate statement-making look for the season.

LEFT: This Alessandra Rich cameo-print chiffon dress cuts close at the waist and has a beautifully cropped V neckline adorned with a white collar and bow, giving the dress a preppy yet playful look. The flowy shorter length is perfect for any special day and can easily take you into evening. BELOW: This floral gown by Alessandra Rich features stunning red roses with delicate ruffle details. Straight from the runway, it shows off a silhouette with its slightly sheer chiffon fabric. It’s a wonderful option for a destination wedding or special occasion. It can also be worn as a nude short slip dress underneath to give you more coverage.
BELOW: Butterflies are a must-have this summer. They are fluttering around everywhere this runway season. This Oscar de la Renta short-sleeve cotton butterfly dress has a perfect fit and shape. Add some butterfly earrings, a clutch and mules, and you’re ready to land swiftly into any evening out.
BELOW: The fit of this Giambattista Valli black macrame crop top with large satin bow and matching skirt needs little explanation. It’s chic and sexy, and we love the juxtaposition between the short, cropped style of the top and the long, flowy and slinglike shape of the skirt. It’s a gorgeous combination that you could keep in your wardrobe for years — it will always make a statement.
LEFT: The short and flowy style of this Alessandra Rich off-the-shoulder baby-blue floral layered ruffle dress (with fabulous halter necktie) makes it easy to wear and take with you just about anywhere this summer. It’s a pop-on piece yet the beauty in its print and cut will not disappoint at any soirée.
LEFT: Adorned with adjustable tie straps and a flattering short length, this Oscar de la Renta beige knit crochet dress with embroidered floral and butterfly appliqués is just so lovely for any summer outing. Whether for travel, a wedding or just a night out with friends, this dress is sure to be a favourite seasonal item in your wardrobe.
LEFT: Hydrangeas are always such a gorgeous print to wear in fashion, and they were gracing runways everywhere showing this season’s designs. There’s such a classic timelessness in this Oscar de la Renta pink and green hydrangeaprint top and skirt. We love the idea of having a two-piece set you can wear together or separately, allowing you to get more wear out of the outfit.
RIGHT: Blumarine’s bubble-gum pink, one shoulder dress with three rosettes on hip and long tussled ruffle details is the ultimate party dress for a fun night on the town. We love the playful (and contrasting) shoulder and hemlines. This easyto-pack jersey will go everywhere with you this summer. The Blumarine bag is available in denim, pink satin and brown satin.
BELOW: These Giambattista Valli pink satin bow sandals are so striking — they’re a wonderful shade of pink. They are a musthave item that will make any outfit feel a little sweeter. When you don’t know what to wear, just start with your feet and these sandals will surely inspire you.

It’s a showstopping item and will work with practically any party outfit.

Living Luxe: You’ve been an Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon practicing Facial Plastic Cosmetic Surgery for more than two decades. What brought you to this field? Dr. Philip Solomon: Like many young people, I didn’t know which path to take following high school. I was in university and was considering architecture and design. My father, who was an immigrant to Canada from South Africa, had several friends who were surgeons and encouraged me to keep an open mind and apply to medical school — he felt being a doctor was a noble profession. My father, who just recently passed away, certainly played a significant role in the trajectory of my life and ultimately my career path. I went on to apply to numerous professions, and ultimately chose medicine at the University of Toronto. During my time at U of T, I immediately became drawn to head and neck anatomy and proceeded to pursue a career in Otolaryngology specializing in head and neck surgery. I was fortunate in that U

THE GOOD LIFE Known for turning design dreams into reality, the founders of Heika Build Group, Colin and Sasha Dempster, have expanded their consummate suite of services from the Niagara Region to the Greater Toronto Area. By Silvana Longo
Growing up in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Colin Dempster remembers playing in the orchards long before they became vineyards. This idyllic town, synonymous with 19th-century charm and well-appointed homes, was where the early seeds were planted for a future in construction. He may have majored in math and kinesiology while at university, but it was during his summer jobs working in various aspects of home improvement where Colin found his stride. Launching his own paint company, C.D. Paints, in 2007, he soon established a solid reputation in the area as the go-to paint company for high-quality work and impeccable service. It wasn’t until he met Toronto-born Sasha, though, that new worlds of possibility opened. “She is the one who changed the business — and its name — to Primary Coatings Ltd., which was our first corporation,” says Colin. However, it didn’t take long for this dynamic duo to evolve their offerings beyond paint. “We started to want more out of our business,” he remembers. “I saw Colin had a great opportunity to really succeed at a higher level. He has a bold sense of business intellect and a natural customer service approach,” Sasha adds. With a propensity for all things luxury, Sasha grew up in Toronto’s upscale Yorkville neighbourhood. Her passion for design, coupled with a background working for prestigious fashion houses, makes her a natural esis of Heika Build Group — a boutique design-build company specializing in commercial development as well as luxury custom-built homes.

No matter how many hours are logged in at the gym, built-up fat cells below the skin’s surface can leave a less-than-desirable shape. The AirSculpt experience, a custom body-contouring procedure created to remove stubborn body fat gently and precisely, is setting the industry standard, and it’s exclusively available at Elite Body Sculpture’s newest location in Yorkville. Elite Body Sculpture’s brand-new Toronto clinic dazzles with a sleek modern decor. The team of professionals is thrilled to have celebrated and trusted plastic surgeons, Dr. Omodele Ayeni and Dr. Sean Rice, as part of the Elite Body Sculpture Toronto team. Both experts were hand-selected by Elite Body Sculpture’s founder, Dr. Aaron Rollins. “Dr. Ayeni and Dr. Rice have an artistic vision of the human body, allowing each to utilize AirSculpt to achieve our patients’ desired results,” says Stephanie Evans Greene, the company’s chief marketing officer. Dr. Rollins developed AirSculpt to naturally redefine areas of the body that store unwanted fat, anywhere chin to ankle. This premium experience delivers incredible results in a one-time procedure. “AirSculpt is tailored to the patient’s body. It has a natural skin-tightening effect and it’s so gentle that it allows our patients to return to their regular routine within one or two days,” Evans Greene says. AirSculpt, developed 11 years ago and performed with more than 40,000 patients in the US, is done without needles, scalpels or stitches. The procedure permanently and gently removes individual fat cells. “Imagine plucking berries from a bush one by one — it’s like that,” she says. During the procedure, the patient is wide awake with a local anaesthesia. Surgeons are able to precisely target pockets of stubborn, unwanted fat and create a sculpted, natural look. Booking a virtual or in-person consult is the first step in exploring if AirSculpt body contouring is for you. An experienced team member will reach out to discuss what to expect, review your medical history and answer your questions. When preferred, a consult with the doctor can be arranged. Enter The Collective Workspace. Launching in 2019, the nowthriving business opened its doors in Toronto and a tight-knit community of designers, architects and builders was born. It got off to an exciting start, with local professionals jumping on board and more than half of their available offices selling out almost immediately. Designers were utilizing the on-site vendor resources, as well as boardrooms and event spaces that were rented out for small events and networking opportunities. Then the pandemic hit. SMITTEN WITH SCARLETT GASQUE Take a look inside designer Chloé Rogers’ debut collection of highly glamorous, intricately designed, luxury lingerie and corsetry. By Lisa van de Geyn Portrait Photography by Ruth Rose Photography by Ellen von Unwerth
Back in February, during London Fashion Week, an enchanting evening was held feting the debut of a sophisticated new designer’s first collection — a sexy, polished and playfully sumptuous line of stylish, vintageinspired lingerie. Among the veritable who’s who of models, musicians, influencers, famous photographers (including Ellen von Unwerth) and fashion aficionados in attendance was Chloé Rogers, the striking blond Canadian expatriate behind the celebrated new brand, Scarlett Gasque. While chic guests sipped on cocktails and watched burlesque dancers perform, Rogers, dressed in her collection’s aqua-blue Arctic Queen Dressing Robe, joyfully mingled as models in her sensual, candycoloured line of bras, thongs, suspenders and corsets wandered through the crowd. Rogers may be new to launching a fashion line, but she’s certainly no stranger to the industry or what it takes to run a successful company. As a member of a prominent Canadian family — her father, Edward, is the chairman of Rogers Communications Inc. and the Toronto Blue Jays; her mother, Suzanne, is a philanthropist known as

Her collection offers timeless silhouettes with a modern twist and fun colours people will want to wear not only for a romantic partner, but outside of the home. “I created lingerie that was made to be seen. You can wear our corsets with a skirt or jeans when you’re out with your friends and be in the full set when you get home.” While she’s partial to the aqua-blue Scarlett set, which includes the stunningly embroidered fauxfur-trimmed robe, the Waspie and the matching bra and underwear (each sold separately), she’s also quite fond of the Pearl Basque Corset in bubble-gum pink. “The pearl detail is so lovely and it’s so comfortable,” she says. What’s perhaps most exciting about Rogers’ debut collection are its versatility and inclusivity. The lemon-sorbet yellow Gasque Lace Corset, for example, can be worn with or without straps, as well as with one string of pearls or two. What’s more, Rogers has catered to clients by designing pieces that can accommodate various shapes and sizes. “Corset sizes can range from extra-small to extra-large, but they don’t offer alternative cup sizes. So, if you’re someone who’s full-figured with a small cup size, you’re often out of luck,” she explains. “With our brand, you can buy the size you wear with the cup size that best fits you. You can select an extra-large corset with an A cup, or an extra-small corset with a DD cup. It’s been a gap in the market until now.” In future lines, sizes will be further expanded, with 36- and 38-inch band sizes for bras and extra-large underwear being added. “You’ll continue to see colour throughout the lines. I’m a colourful person and I feel lingerie is so muted by black, white and red. You’ll also see different silhouettes and the next few collections will be a bit sexier.” So far, Rogers has received rave reviews from style mavens and clients alike. The Poke-A-Dot Bra, Miss Bo Peep Thong, the Pearl Basque Corset, the Scarlett Waspie and more are available at scarlettgasque.com; worldwide shipping is offered. “As a young designer putting out my first collection, it’s super encouraging to find out how much people are enjoying the line,” she says. “It’s been a wonderful experience.”

AT THE INTERSECTION OF DESIGN AND FUNCTION RP Design — celebrating its fifth anniversary — specializes in helping homeowners create the space of their dreams. Here’s what designer and owner Rutnaish Prihar told us about her flourishing business.
It should come as no surprise that the ideal time to incorporate design into your new build or renovation is at the beginning of the process. “A home must look gorgeous and be a liveable space at the same time. The placement of every element inside must flow and function to complement the homeowner’s lifestyle,” says Rutnaish Prihar, owner of RP Design, a full-service interior design firm based in Oakville, Ont. “As the designer, I visualize every detail; therefore, being involved from the beginning allows me to work with the architects and builders to create the perfect custom home.” Understanding the importance of functional design, Prihar constantly surveys her environment for inspiration. “Each space I design is personalized for

my clients. My goal is to have each client see themselves reflected in the space and for the interiors to add ease of lifestyle,” she says. She will incorporate cultural and historically significant items in the home, ensuring her client feels connected to the art and decor in their space. This year, RP Design is celebrating five successful years in business, which was launched after Prihar built and designed three family homes in southeast Oakville. Throughout the process, she was often asked if she designed for others. Knowing there was a demand for her design aesthetic, she followed her passion for exceptional interiors and started RP Designs in 2018. Since then, the company has grown to include designing custom furnishings and creat-

ing bespoke hand-knotted, pure wool and silk rugs with Weaver & Loom. “I love to customize details for my clients, including bespoke rugs from Nepal with the perfect colour combinations. I create a work of art on the floor to pull the room together. I love to incorporate design features and details that turn the ordinary into the extraordinary,” she says with pride. Working with RP Design offers an impressive individual experience. Each project begins with a consultation to review the client’s goals and lifestyle, sparking ideas for a visually stunning yet functional space. The consultation is followed by reviewing drawings, finding a suitable architect or builder and finalizing the details before building or renovations begin. Planning and selection are the following stages, which further review the renderings, obtain permits where required and incorporate luxury elements such as natural stone tiles, luxury hardware and custom furnishings. “Proper scale and fit are imperative for flow and accessibility. Clients look to me when it comes to helping them visualize the look of a finished room or how all the pieces will flow together,” says Prihar. “These details are so important to capture the desired finished look. Luxury is not only about customized pieces and high-end finishings. It’s also about seamlessly creating an environment that complements a client’s style and needs.” Knowing the entire picture in advance allows the design showpieces — think marble slabs with matching veins, made-to-measure furnishings, artwork and high-end finishes — to be sourced and ordered well in advance. Over the last five years, RP Design has been involved in design projects from traditional and transitional to super modern and contemporary — Prihar has mastered it all. “I love the simplicity of modern design with all its rich details, but I am certainly comfortable designing for all styles,” she says. “My favourite moment is when the client sees the finished product and they are truly wowed. When I create a jaw-dropping reveal, I believe I’ve done my job and accomplished my goal.”

A PILLAR OF THE COMMUNITY The Agency originated in Beverly Hills, but the luxury real estate firm is solidifying its place in burgeoning York Region. By Adriana Ermter
With a tagline on their corporate website that reads, “Your window to the world’s finest real estate,” and a descriptor that says, “The Agency is defined by its strength of character, rebellious spirit and passion for reinvention,” it’s pretty clear the bustling real estate firm offers clients a fresh, unique experience when it comes to buying and selling luxury homes. And now, with a new office in York Region, The Agency is expanding their offerings to clients looking to move into the highly desirable area north of Toronto. “When serving our clients, we really strive to treat their transaction and their homes like our own,” says Niusha Walker, the broker and managing partner for The Agency’s York Region office located on Keele Street in King City. “We’re a solid ambassador of The Agency brand. Our clients come first, and our ethics reflect that. We’re punctual, professional and we provide luxury, white-glove service, regardless of the price point,” she says. The brand — designed by real estate agents for real estate agents — was founded in 2011 in Beverly Hills by Billy Rose and Mauricio Umansky, who is also the company’s CEO and best known for appearing on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and

Inspired by the heritage of the gala co-chairs, Krystal Koo and Fernanda Dovigi, the UNMET Gala was a celebration of diversity, reimagining the Royal Ontario Museum as a vibrant fusion of Chinese and Brazilian cultures, adorned in feathers, fiery hues and brilliant jewels. Photography by George Pimentel An already impressive fundraising record was smashed on Thursday, April 20, when more than $1 million was raised at Biblio Bash 2023, held at the distinguished Toronto Reference Library. Attended by more than 450 of the city’s most illustrious bibliophiles, philanthropists, business leaders and other noteworthy personalities (including 41 prominent authors), this year’s black-tie gala — one of the most revered events of the year — was held to raise funds for the Toronto Public Library’s “Leading to Reading” program. The evening, presented by Tricon Residential, was hosted by Global News National anchor Farah Nasser and included a truly delicious dinner by The Food Dudes and dessert by Dufflet, courtesy of Balzac’s. (Burgers and donuts were served as guests closed out the evening.) A Wedding to end
all others Fairy-tale weddings come to life every day at Toronto’s historic Casa Loma, so when Liberty Entertainment Group’s vice-president and creative director Nadia Di Donato’s son and his fiancée announced their engagement, she couldn’t wait to fête the happy couple in this iconic landmark. s women of a certain age who grew up riveted by the love stories in Disney films, we know that
only the most spectacular royal fairy-tale weddings take place at castles. Sure, stories like Cinderella’s and her Prince Charming’s are indeed fictional, but that glorious castle set the ideal for romance and glamour 70 years ago, and for those tying the knot in the city, perhaps the most idyllic place to say your vows is Casa Loma — midtown Toronto’s incomparable castle. “Casa Loma is an absolutely stunning backdrop for any wedding,” says Nadia Di Donato, vice-president and creative director of Liberty Entertainment Group, the company that operates countless special-event facilities and restaurants in the city. “The exceptional ambiance, along with the history and wealth of the artifacts, plus our astute hospitality and high level of service, make this the perfect place to celebrate.” Built in 1914 by architect E.J. Lennox for Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, the Gothic revival-style castle is one of North America’s only castles. Surrounded by five acres of lush gardens, it boasts three storeys that feature a great hall (with 60-foot ceilings), a conservatory with

Of the thousands of weddings Di Donato has had a hand in, none have been more special to her and her husband, Nick (Liberty Entertainment Group’s CEO and president), than her son and his fiancée’s magnificent nuptials at the castle last fall. Dr. Justin Di Donato and Dr. Carissa Simone Di Donato said their “I do’s” on November 19, 2022. This awardwinning wedding (it recently won accolades as the Best Wedding $250,000+ at the 2023 Canadian Event Awards) was highly inclusive and uniquely interactive. The ceremony was held in the storied stables on the property, then guests walked through the 800-foot underground tunnel to the main building, which displayed large photos of the couple’s history together. The reception was perhaps even more unique than the ceremony. “We took over the entire castle,” says Di Donato, explaining there were moments for guests to experience in the great hall, the library, conservatory, the second-floor museum rooms and the third-floor military museum. “Food stations with accompanying beverage pairings were set up throughout all the rooms in the castle, including the bedrooms. There was a late-night cocktail lounge on the third floor; a DJ and dance floor set up in the conservatory that, at 10 p.m., turned into a nightclub; the Casa Loma symphony orchestra played in the mezzanine overlooking the reception during the first few 130
hours; and Canadian soul and R&B artist Sean Jones performed throughout the evening in different rooms on the main floor. It was a roam-around wedding where guests got to peruse the whole castle while celebrating with Justin and Carissa.” Each room had its own stunning colour palette to match the fashioned vibe and experience. Flowers were done by Fleur Weddings — every one of the thousands of flowers used for this exceptional day was real, there were no artificial blooms. The great hall — where guests entered and enjoyed cocktails — had white, pink and champagne-coloured roses, hydrangeas and orchids. The library, which Di Donato described as having “understated elegance” was more eclectic with a combination of rectangular and round glass-top tables with gold bases and white Louis chairs and white, champagne and mauve roses, brown hydrangeas and crystal centrepieces. The conservatory took on a high-energy nightclub-like setting with black and gold bars, black sofas and black glass communal tables. The flowers

By revolving each room’s design around a superbly unique piece of art, designer Andrea McMullen and her team breathe colour, life and pleasure into a new home in Whitby. By Adriana Ermter Photography by Larry Arnal
Designer Andrea McMullen, the founder of the highly impressive firm ADM Design, Inc., was faced with a dilemma: She had a client — a downtown Toronto condo dweller — who had purchased a brand-new, three-storey home in Whitby, Ont., but six months past the homeowner’s possession date, the new abode sat empty, locked and gathering dust. She was reluctant to move. So, what’s a designer to do? That’s easy, says McMullen. “You make her new home absolutely spectacular,” she states with confidence and delight. In this case, the homeowner had bought pre-construction, and by the time her closing date rolled around, she was having second thoughts about relocating. “She wasn’t sure she ultimately wanted to be there,” she says. “However, my client loves art, so we purposefully designed every room around a stunning focal piece to create maximum joy. I just knew that when she saw the finished space,
134
135
she’d want to move in and enjoy her new home.” Sure, it’s not McMullen’s typical design modus operandi, but it proved to be an innovative and completely effective one with high impact. Granted carte-blanche by the homeowner — who brought only a white lacquered dining room table and a painting from Paris into the four-bedroom home — McMullen transformed the new build into a warm, welcoming, modern-contemporary haven bursting with colour. Flashes of bright pink can be found exploding off the laundry room walls. Long oval emerald-green tiles shimmer in the upstairs ensuite and midnight-blue paint revolutionizes the dining space. Interspersed throughout are light-toned, wide-plank hardwood floors. Black iron hand railings flank the multi-level staircase and a palette of soft grey, sleek white and neutral beige can be found on the walls, within the furniture and featured in a grand triptych painting hung near the foyer. All that said, McMullen’s design inspiration was ignited by a three-dimensional sculpture of a panther created by a Toronto-based visual artist named Perry Lansing. “The homeowner and I met at a Perry Lansing art show,” explains McMullen. “She was looking around and wanted to buy a piece but didn’t know where to put it in her home, so she asked me for my help. We connected and she ended up hiring me.” The Lansing piece is a life-sized black panther sculpture crafted from head to tail with upcycled denim. If that wasn’t hip enough, the names of Motown greats (think Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder) are printed on the piece. It stands mid-leap atop a white pillar in the family room. It’s positioned perfectly, in the vicinity of the room’s second Lansing sculpture — a lacquered three-dimensional jean jacket adorned with white metal angel wings — which hangs above the fireplace. Nestled between them is an onyx and white-hued 10-foot-high feature wall that makes another impressive statement. Across the room, the open-concept kitchen’s white cabinetry and large waterfall island create an airy contrast. High-end features, complete with a gas range stove and pot-filler faucet, a herringbone tile backsplash and a floating, curved metal art sculpture make their mark. To the right, a cantilevered black table and chairs rest atop an onyx and white area rug. An intricate, black metal, star-like chandelier with round glass lights hangs from above, and an abstract black-and-white painting by Elena Henderson completes the cozy-chic vibe. “I was raised in an art gallery, so I understand the aesthetic fabulous pieces can bring to a space,” says
136
McMullen. “It’s all about the composition. I like to layer art over wallpaper and make groupings from design elements.”

Art isn’t just decor and accoutrement in this space — it injects the home with visual interest, a ton of personality and, well, it just arouses exuberance. “This is a subdivision home with a seriously hip vibe,” says McMullen. “My client needed something to inspire her to fall in love with her space and she definitely has that now. She is finally home.”

Imagine a neighbourhood first settled by Sheriff William Jarvis and his wife, Mary, sometime around 1826 — a
neighbourhood built from trails that were transformed into
meandering streets and continues to be defined by ravines. This is a neighbourhood that derived its name from blooming
roses, and it’s an area that has become a landmark attraction in one of the world’s largest cities — Rosedale, Toronto. Rosedale
has continued to evolve over nearly 200 years while preserving
its heritage look, but it’s often a challenge in settings like this when it comes to designing the different epochs together.
Originally built in 1915 and designed by James Ellis, one of
Toronto’s prominent architects of the time, this home has been completely renovated. The design by Lieux Architects Ltd. has
modern additions. The interior space brilliantly combines the luxurious open-concept approach to contemporary design with timeless, meticulous craftsmanship that celebrates beauty and longevity. “We designed the modern interior the
homeowner wanted, while retaining key elements of the original architecture,” says Nathalie Bely, a principal at Lieux
Architects Ltd. “The heritage property’s picturesque circular porch, Palladian dormer and stained-glass and curved bay
windows were all restored. The modernization included
opening the interior and creating a wall of windows at the back of the home, inviting natural light to illuminate the space and providing sweeping views of the back garden and Coach
House. Every detail, including the floor design, was detailed and meticulously executed.

undeniable, and it employs heritage traditions in its manufacturing, including smoking and cerusing techniques. The hardwood boards
were deep smoked, which accentuates and darkens the tannins in
the wood. The cerusing process followed, done by hand, to draw out
for this project because it perfectly demonstrates the expanse of the
centre stage. “The cerusing of the wood adds a depth, richness and

the detail and character of the grain, allowing unique beauty to take an appeal factor,” says Wissam Qassim, the co-founder of Toronto-

The floors are a marine-grade grey wood, and the photography includes Canadian artists David Burdeny and Joshua Jensen-Nagle, and the iconic Slim Aarons,” she explains. The aft deck is ideal for al fresco dining (the antique McGuire chairs around the table are exquisite), entertaining and movie-watching in the moonlight — there’s a 102-inch screen that’s deployed from a built-in cabinet. The hot tub area was refitted and there’s a new sun pad at the top of the vessel where guests can enjoy a glass of Champagne and take in their surroundings. For active friends and family onboard, there’s fun to be had with a multitude of watersports — there are kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, Seabobs and hydrofoil surfboards alongside a rock-climbing wall and a waterslide. The refit was a two-year project, but it was one that Dee Dee remembers fondly. “This was the second boat I’ve designed, and I love that it’s of today and of tomorrow. It was done seven years ago, but it is iconic, and the design is remarkably lasting. It’s truly standing the test of time, as all Feadships do,” she says. “We’ve also really loved our travels on BG Charade and have created such wonderful memories with our friends and family as we explored the coastlines of Bali, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Croatia, Venice and Monaco. We have adventured to some of my favourite destinations by sea, including the Italian coast, the French Riviera, Malaysia, Montenegro, Cuba and The Bahamas,” she adds. “From my time abroad, I’ve noticed how fascinating it is to see the world from the outside looking in — it offers a different perspective and pure joy.”

mat ed It’s true that wedding planners play almost as big a role as family when a couple get married, and Thana and Stefano Serpa are the first to praise the extraordinary professional who created and orchestrated a day they’ll never forget. Diana Pires told us about her event-planning firm and her immense pleasure designing this impressive wedding. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by 515 Photo Co.
“A good marriage is one where each partner secretly suspects they got the better deal.” – Unknown
Stefano pulled off a meaningful surprise proposal for Thana aboard a beautiful boat, surrounded by their nearest and dearest as a grand gesture of his love. The couple had been together for a few years, fallen madly in love and were eager to start the next chapter of their lives together. “Their proposal was a unique experience and, after hearing it, I instantly fell in love with the couple, their family and their beautiful love story. I just adore who they are as a couple, 153

It was very unique and featured an ombre effect,” she says. “It was also special because of the gorgeous suspension over

feature — Rachel A. Clingen Weddings & Event Design handled the spectacular arrangements, which were filled with roses and greenery. For dinner, the couple curated a delectable meal. On the menu was a fennel and arugula salad with roasted pear and goat cheese, beef sirloin as the entrée and two lush desserts — a mascarpone cheesecake and a caramel milk-chocolate pave. “The food was fantastic,” says Pires. “They also opted for latenight treats celebrating their cultures — they had veal sandwiches and mini pork gyros. That was fun.” Add speciality coffees, a fully stocked bar and an elaborate cake into the mix, and the party continued into the early-morning hours, with a nine-piece band putting on a fabulous show. 154
Diana has an ability to make special moments that are filled with purpose and magic. She created the most pictureperfect atmosphere with the decor — it was bright, elegant and absolutely stunning. By all accounts, the wedding was a phenomenal success, with every detail accounted for and the bride and groom’s every wish granted. “We felt complete support from every angle of the planning process, right until the end of our celebration. Not only did my husband and I have the night of our lives, but our guests had nothing but compliments for our wedding,” says Thana. “Diana’s attention to detail and creative edge comes from her ability to make special moments filled with purpose and magic. She created the most pictureperfect atmosphere with the decor — it was bright, elegant and absolutely stunning. Diana and her team made our dreams come true with the colour palette and my favourite flowers. It’s as though she’s always known what we wanted. She gave us moments we’ll cherish forever.” “I’m so honoured to have played a role in this milestone moment celebrating this beautiful couple and their families coming together,” Pires says with delight. “And I’m proud of the work we did. They loved their experience — it really makes what we do so special.”
