Sylvia Plath once said, “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.” While that’s certainly debatable, the luxury of a hot bath is not. I could never live (happily) without a tub. That’s a luxury that’s always been available to me and to most of us reading this magazine. Indeed, having clean, running all. While putting together this Kitchen and Bath issue, much of the world is taking refuge from the COVID-19 virus in their own homes, breaking bread with family members and reconnecting with their own spaces. We have been taking stock of what is truly important in this life, and turning our attention back to our houses, apartments and condos. Many of us are spending isolation time improving and rediscovering our surroundings — decorating, cooking, playing with the kids. LL contributor Jessica Gilbert (who styled our cover star Mark McEwan) was wallpapering her bedroom last we spoke. For this issue, we travelled up to Thornbury, Ontario on the banks of Georgian Bay to meet with the acclaimed chef, who welcomed us into his home kitchen (before the dawn of social distancing). It’s here where he does his best work, serving up simple but delicious local fare, much from his own garden. Lifestyle Editor Jeanne Beker talks with him about his rise to culinary fame and his thoughts on how we consume and prepare food today (page 94). Hint: we aren’t all in love with cooking, it seems. I, too, am guilty of that, but like many of us at this time, I am learning to appreciate the simple joys right here at home. Enjoy the beautiful homes and objects in this issue, my first as part of the Living Luxe family, then when the page has turned on this pandemic, let us be changed for the better...and truly cherish our own luxuries.

Catherine MacIntosh Sweeney We visited chef Mark McEwan at his country home where he keeps a sizeable and charming walled garden (that’s straight out of Peter Rabbit). His carrot harvest is truly a work of art.

DECOR TRENDS — HOUSE PROFILES — SPECIAL EVENTS For the Kitchen & Bath issue, we pulled together our favourite bathrooms, from all-white oases to lush, colourful spaces. It’s just what the design doctor ordered this time of year. You’ll also find the dreamiest kitchens, and some very grand entrances, along with our new Trendwatch column. But what we’re probably most excited to launch is a monthly Q&A series with our new editor, Catherine MacIntosh. Get to know her in the first installment, and then look out for her personal take on design and living trends in the coming months. Plus, as Living Luxe insiders know, we’ve been doing an exclusive chatting about life, homes, and other fun things with our publisher, Jennifer Lipkowitz. Who or what do you want to see? First of all, I hope everyone is well and safe. I know this is a challenging time for everyone, considering these unprecedented circumstances that we now face together. I have to say that, even though I cannot go outside much or run day-today errands, I feel very grateful that I have been spending my days with my children and Eleanor, our wonderful nanny (or as I call her “Super Tita”). I still wake up some days in true disbelief, but I understand that social distancing and staying at home to flatten the curve is very necessary for our health care systems. I myself have childhood asthma, so am staying home to remain safe. I’ve been enjoying chasing my children — playing hopscotch in the backyard, or helping my son create an indoor garage sale, where Eleanor and I are buying bracelets from him, or whatever he creates that day. He’s so proud of raising money — wow, he’s so young to be a little entrepreneur. My children are studying and learning from home. I really feel so fortunate that we are learning together and sharing these memories as a family. I also wanted to personally thank all the amazing heroes that risk their lives to protect all of us — from our nurses, hospital personnel, and physicians, to all the staff who work in the grocery stores and pharmacies. You are all so brave and I am very grateful for everything that you do for us. Towards the end of March, we started doing live Instagram videos to unite everyone, spread positivity, and keep things as fun as possible. Little did I know that this would become part of my weekly routine. We interview various designers, celebrities, and contributors, and play a bit of Living Luxe trivia, where we give away prizes from our generous partners. We usually go live Friday evenings at 8 p.m., so stay connected @livingluxemagazine and join us regularly to be part of the fun. As always, I wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer. Thank you for being part of this journey with us and supporting our magazine. Lastly, a big thank you to our wonderful Living Luxe team for producing this beautiful issue. Please read on and enjoy some beautiful inspiration. God bless everyone. Warmest regards,

Rock On With thick, realistic veining sweeping across the surface, the Secolo porcelain slabs from Walker Zanger are a stunning standin for real marble. Low maintenance and ultrathin at just 12 millimetres, the slabs make for a bold statement with minimal upkeep. Available polished or matte. walkerzanger.com

Stacked Up An unusual source of inspiration led to the naming of Belgian architect and designer Glenn Sestig’s new dishware line for Valerie Objects – David Bowie’s song “Ashes to Ashes.” The tactile bowls, plates and lids are made from both stained wood and colourful ceramic (with tinted glass and cast-iron pieces to follow shortly). The Dishes to Dishes collection can be stacked together in artful displays when not in use. valerie-objects.com

“What’s modern now?” That’s the burning question for those who scout for the new and the next, and for those who yearn for what’s fresh and fabulous. Peer through the lens of modernity with a striking, 24-karat gold-plated and enameled circular pendant from FreyWille. The vibrant look of enamel also carries over in Knar’s 14-karat white gold “Jazz Ring” designed by Jeff Buzbuzian. A subtle and stunning 18-karat white-gold bangle, featuring a jaw-dropping total diamond weight of almost seven karats is the height of glamour. For added allure, try IsabelleFa’s Anker Fantasie Pavé necklace, which can also be worn as a bracelet by removing an 8-inch section. Then there’s the subject of love — a timeless sentiment indeed embodied in an 18-karat yellow-gold Fabergé egg pendant with a delicate “I love you.” If it’s magic you’re craving, Gellner’s “Stars in Heaven” ring feels a bit mystical. Or, if it’s bold, no-nonsense modernity you’re after, the silver and 18-karat yellow-gold multi-band ring from Tirisi will definitely fit the bill. Statement earrings are also making big news,

6

with dangling circles feeling right on trend. The 18-karat rose-gold, drop earrings, encrusted with black and brown diamonds, are the epitome of edgy, New Age elegance. And then there’s the mesmerizing charm of John Hardy’s interlinking, hammered-sterling hoops. But the piece de resistance for me, is Hardy’s dynamic sterling silver cuff from his Bamboo collection. For each bracelet sold, seven bamboo seedlings are planted in Bali — a heartwarming nod to our endangered planet and a powerful sign of these modern times.

MOODY HUES

Rich tones, matte finishes and subtle layers make for a spa-inspired bathroom that’s the ultimate getaway.

While springtime typically conjures up a palette of crisp white paired with vibrant florals or seaside blues, there’s something far more romantic about tapping into the moodier, rainy-day side of the season. As the sun’s rays stay out longer each day, I start to crave a bit of a reprieve. The dreamy ambiance in this washroom by the design team at the House of Rohl is just the ticket. A bathroom that delivers a darker, more mysterious vibe invites you to linger and truly relax, hammam style. Here, a rich, dark green palette sets a mysterious tone that is offset by the white freestanding bathtub and sleek fixtures. There is a wonderful mix of organic textures, rustic accents and soft, filtered light through the dramatic industrial window. The designer has artfully

HOPE IN SIGHT Contributing Editor Joan Kelley Walker on the life-altering work of the CNIB By Joan Kelley Walker Allow me to take a moment to tell you about my dear mother, Roseline. ZANEEN With innovative and elegant designs, this family business is a tour de force in the lighting industry. By B.F. Dawes

In the mid-1950s, an ambitious young man left his homeland in search of a better life for his family. Anthony Basso arrived in Canada carrying a work ethic instilled by his parents and a traditional upbringing. Basso and his wife, Bertilla, eventually started a company in Toronto called “Anthony’s Art Design,” specializing in ceramic lamps, a trade in which he made a name for himself in Italy. The couple’s daughter, Florence, went on to marry Robert Pietrobon, whose family had immigrated to Canada from the shared his new father-in-law’s work ethic and quickly became involved in his company. In 1981, he launched Zaneen as a sister company selling decorative interior lighting.

After years of hard work, the foundation was built and the core philosophies extended the brand to an international company. Today, Zaneen provides custom contract work (both indoors and out) for architects, designers and lighting engineers while creating ambiance for illustrious clients such as Harvard University, Apple World campus in San Francisco, Starbucks International Headquarters, Uber and Jaguar Land Rover. Here at home, they’ve lit up spaces for Harry Rosen, Vice Media,

Hudson’s Bay and the Bank of Montreal, to name but a few. They work with exclusive European lines, and curate lighting solutions to fit any space. Zaneen’s bespoke systems illuminate with purpose. Their unique and elegant design approach complements without ever overshadowing. Functionality is key, says Kristen Pietrobon, company Operations and Communications Manager, as well as one of five children who work for the business. Zaneen is now a second-generation family operation with all the children working on the team alongside their father, Robert. One of the latest Zaneen offerings, Snooker, is a beautiful reflection of function, form and flexibility. The configurable lighting can be tailored to an owner’s space and requirements, shaped by adding on or contracting elements such as span, height, colour, and lensing. In short, it’s an adaptable all-in-one system for countless applications and locales.

The Collective’s library is truly a designer’s dream. It acts as a one-stop shop where residents can source materials and borrow samples for client presentations.

Coworking office spaces are definitely flexing their creativity muscle as of late. Carly Nemtean and Rocco Verrilli have done just that to craft a chic and hardworking space for Toronto-based designers, architects and builders to meet, work, and engage with one another. When The Collective workspace opened last November, the 13,000-square-foot facility by Nemtean and Verrilli’s firm, Carriage Lane Design Build, it was immediately embraced — industry professionals were quick to sign up for space in the office’s gorgeous digs. Full of fabulous features — including reasonable rent-share programs, meeting spaces, a storage facility, kitchen café, and private offices — the impressive central materials library is one of

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF COLOUR Village Paint & Wallpaper on what’s hot in 2020

By Gobi Kim

Ever since Benjamin Moore declared First Light their colour of the year, we’ve been rejoicing in a new, lighter mood. Ruth Bell of Village Paint & Wallpaper shares her paint and wallcovering picks to match this fresh, inspiring chapter in decor. Bell and her husband, David, took over the charming 67-year-old Etobicoke boutique in 1999. After decades of experience, she has gathered a wealth of expert colour knowledge and tips. “I’m good at selecting colours for other people,” she says, “for myself, it’s too much choice.”

Airy Aspirations Look for brighter whites, move away from yellow undertones: “The trend has been to airier colours. Last winter was drab. Now people want lighter spaces, whites, off whites, grey-blue undertones,” says Bell, who also loves Classic Gray. “It’s just a modern pretty colour.”

Amagansett Weave wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries.

Natural Texture “I’m finding people still like geometrics, but there’s a desire for more timeless wallpapers. There are a lot of graphic wallpapers going on, and neutrals, often in a 54” for less seams. That option was always considered commercial wall coverings, but they’ve come so far in their textures, they don’t look commercial now.” Bell is currently jazzed about everything Phillip Jeffries, whose inventive natural-texture wall coverings have taken the decor world by storm. Looking Up While the feature wall isn’t going anywhere soon, the new star for the decor-lover in search of a striking new approach is wallpaper on the ceiling. Powder rooms still hold wow factor for guests, too. Yet another fun spot to wallpaper is the back of a bookshelf. “Wallpaper is so versatile,” notes Bell, “it can be used for whatever people create in their own minds.” Small and Mighty “I always encourage people living in small spaces not to use too many colours as it breaks up the space,” says Bell. Instead of having every room a different colour, pick a or two features for accent. This leaves room to play while maximizing your space. LIGHTMAKER STUDIO Husband and wife duo Denise and Michael Murphy have made a big splash in the world of lighting. Located in Toronto’s Distillery district, their studio is home to a passionate practice of craft. Working with a glass studio in Quebec and a metal finisher in Toronto, they have been able to collaborate with interior designers across North America. The Betty, Edie (shown at left) and Sweetie sconces, each have a delightful nostalgia to them. By playing with geometry and balance, the works are pleasing to the eye even when not lit. Options of opaque glass, clear, smoked grey, and semi-transparent colour give them a versatility and an endearing timelessness.

ANONY Longevity and quality are top of mind for Toronto studio Anony. Their work exemplifies this ethos in exquisitely beautiful forms. Reminiscent of a Calder mobile, the multi-tiered Phase light adds movement and life to any space. The circular forms (discs, spheres and melted semi-circles) are optimally placed on each level for both light and aesthetics. All wires are hidden within the piece, letting its delightful form truly shine. Each hand-finished component is precisely weighted before being attached to the arm. The result is both a mesmerizing hanging sculpture

and a glowing light source.

While many studios play with material and form, Hollis + Morris embodies these elements in each elegant piece. Their designs favour simple lines and a purity in execution that makes them so tactile PHOTOGRAPHY (ANONY), RAFFI TUTUNDJIAN

and beautiful. Founder Mischa Couvrette’s focus on materials comes through, creating pieces that stand the test of time. The leggy Junction floor light above (also available as a table lamp) was named after the studio’s west-end locale and was inspired by the crossing of railway lines. The versatile Catkin table light would sit sweetly on almost any surface. It melds brass, copper or stainless steel with a variety of wood finishes. Hand-made in North America.

Chef Mark McEwan favours simple foods and local offerings when cooking at his country home.

Jeanne Beker Lifestyle Editor

Twenty years ago,

on the tails of fash-

ion’s heady ’90s ride, I asked the late pop-culture visionary Malcolm McLaren about where things were going. “What’s the next red-hot arena? And who are the future superstars?” Without skipping a beat, he replied, “Oh it’s going to be about food. Food is so sensual, even sexier than fashion. And chefs will be the next big celebrities.” While I’d always appreciated the art of cuisine, I couldn’t imagine that super-stardom would be in the cards for any of the culinary masters I knew. But, here I am two decades later, sitting in Yorkville’s glam One Restaurant, across the table from Mark McEwan, one of Canada’s most savvy and successful chefs, and his rockstar glow is unmistakable. “I sort of chuckle about it,” says the 63-year-old, who helms an empire of fine eateries and gourmet emporiums in and around Toronto. “Because when I first got into the business in the mid ’70s, it wasn’t glamorous to be a chef. We were relegated as domestic help. When I told my family that I was working on an apprenticeship to be a cook, there was absolute silence at the dinner table,” he reminisces. McEwan’s family, who lived in Buffalo, NY, would have preferred that he’d be a lawyer or accountant. “You’re gonna cook chicken?!” asked his incredulous grandmother. McEwan’s family didn’t have any inkling of the food business, and neither did he, but he’d worked a bit at restaurants in high school and got hooked. “I love the whole interaction of a restaurant, customer service, the bar, the wine list. I thought it was all amazing,” says McEwan.

96

Chef McEwan takes time away from the city at his country home. Under McEwan Group, the busy chef helms six restaurants, three fine-food emporiums, and a catering business, plus he appears as head judge on Food Network’s Top Chef.

97

The newly redecorated living and dining room at Mark McEwan’s home is the perfect backdrop to his near-weekly dinner parties.

98

So he took a year off from school in 1976 and got an apprenticeship at Toronto’s old Constellation Hotel, devouring cookbooks by French chefs like Paul Bocuse and fantasizing about going to Europe to pursue his dreams. But instead, he began paying his dues and learning invaluable lessons along the way. “It was anything but glamour,” says McEwan, “but I discovered that I was a natural with service, making breakfast for 800 people, and getting it out on time, and making all the customers happy. I was really good at the mechanics of the business. Then I learned to cook after that.” As his confidence soared, McEwan rose through the ranks and then went to study at George Brown College. His first executive chef posting was at Toronto’s swank Sutton Place Hotel in 1979. But by the mid ’80s, he’d hawked everything he owned to buy a partnership in a cool Italian restaurant called Pronto. It wasn’t long before McEwan struck out on his own, with a spectacular eatery called North 44, the likes of which Toronto had never seen. The year was 1990 and McEwan was determined to make a splash. “I brought a designer in from London, England, to do it,” he says. “And I just about buried myself. I spent twice as much money as I had. But thank God I knew how to work hard and work my way through things.” North 44 had a glorious 28-year run. By the time it closed its doors in 2018, McEwan had become a household name, synonymous with the gourmet experience. Besides launching into the TV stratosphere in 2006, with his own show “The Heat” and later “Chopped Canada,”

Canada,” which is starting its eighth season, and he has authored

he’d become a national hero as head judge on the popular “Top Chef

several cookbooks. But most impressively, the intrepid gourmand had opened a series of successful hot-spot restaurants, including the tony Bymark in 2002, Yorkville’s inviting One Restaurant in 2007, and his first of three contemporary Italian eateries called Fabbrica in 2009, including one in Thornbury, Ont. In 2015, he took over operations at Diwan, the Middle Eastern restaurant at the Aga Khan Museum. McEwan’s three eponymous Gourmet Grocery locations (Don Mills, Yonge and Bloor, and TD Centre), which stock a large percentage of prepared foods, have also been very well received. “People don’t really want to cook anymore,” opines McEwan. “With all the condos around, I would venture that if you open those fridges, you’d just find a half bottle of white wine, a half-dozen eggs, and maybe some moldy cheese,” he chuckles. “I don’t think they shop much. They’re always about the next meal.” This modern notion of not stocking up by doing large grocery shops is the way McEwan likes it in his own kitchen as well. “I’ll always have good standard basics in the fridge. I don’t buy processed food. I don’t buy much in boxes. I don’t need 80 feet of pasta. I just want three selections of really good pasta and a homemade sauce. I don’t think the big box store is the future for average people.”

99

When it comes down to what’s modern in food preparation today, McEwan has a definite point of view. He feels the modern approach for chefs is actually to be very traditional. “It’s about going back in time and learning the art of curing meat and doing old-school recipes perfectly well, rather that a lot of fanfare and orchestration on the plate. Those days are somewhat over. I have no interest in that food any longer,” he says. “I like seasonality. I like food to be super simple and really good. I think a lot of chefs are starting to do that now.” It’s the pursuit of beautiful simplicity that drives McEwan — a philosophy that also informs his notion of the ideal home kitchen. “A proper refrigerator with a double door, a six-burner gas stove and proper oven, a set of sharp knives, and a cutting board,” says McEwan. “Some of the best cooking comes out of the simplest kitchen… I still cook in the Le Creuset pots I’ve had for 15 years and still use the same wooden spoon. And I get yelled at by my wife, Roxanne, because I still use this really ugly, grungy looking cutting board to display food because I think it’s beautiful. She thinks it’s unsanitary. But I think it’s got oodles of character,” he smiles. McEwan feels that, sometimes, kitchens can be too slick and too “designed” for cooking. “And they’re not actually fun to cook in because they’re so pretty. For me, a kitchen has to have a bit of muscle to it, some oomph… surfaces that you can feel good about mucking up a bit. And you need a big sink next to the area that you chop on,

people, you’re not always trying to tidy up and feeling unorganized.

and you need a place for garbage slop. So if you actually cook for 12

You need a place where you can actually cook and process,” the master chef advises. McEwan’s favourite place to cook is at his country home in Thornbury, Ont., not far from his newest Fabbrica location. He’s the most relaxed there, with more time to make meals for his friends. “We entertain a lot. Almost every weekend we have people over to the house, whether it’s six people or 12 people. I’ll make a big pot of short ribs in a massive Le Creuset pot and I’ll start in the morning and braise things, because that’s easy to do. And then I’ll do a starch component like a soft polenta, and whatever veg is interesting, and I have a wine cellar, so I’ll pull some wine out.” Listening to the chef’s cozy routine, I’m suddenly transported to McEwan’s feel-good country kitchen. His passion for cooking for his friends is palpable. And it’s evident that despite all the satisfaction he finds in running his chic restaurants, fancy gourmet emporiums, and huge catering business, McEwan’s true joy really does come from pleasing people. And, major skill set aside, it’s precisely that air of affability that’s made Mark McEwan such a distinctive and beloved, true superstar chef.

big foodies, so I wanted the kitchen to be a huge highlight of the house, very open for guests to gather, with lots of space to cook for people with people,” she says. The placement of the appliances and cabinetry works intuitively. The owners requested no upper cabinets to impede their sightlines or work flow. So, with a light and airy vibe on the agenda, Binns opted for a crisp white backdrop in lieu of the more expected all-white kitchen. Instead, she grounded the space with high-contrast dark cabinets, which create a less sterile and functional aura to the kitchen. A casual mix of finishes cultivates

Unlike other rooms in a home, the kitchen is one space where we tend to pick everything at the same time and not everything needs to match, or is meant to.” It’s exactly that feeling, and motivation, of authenticity that drives this design to the next level.

A Leap in the Dark A Sault Ste. Marie couple goes bold with an almost all-black kitchen renovation. By Beth Hitchcock Photography by Brietakespictures

Miele appliances, including a downdraft induction cooktop and steam oven, and a Dacor fridge make Peter and Lorraine’s kitchen a cook’s dream. “I really started to enjoy cooking after I met Lorraine,” says Peter. Like a finely tailored tuxedo or sleek cocktail dress, a black kitchen never goes out of style. Still, few homeowners are willing to embrace the drama like Peter and Lorraine Chudoba. When the couple renovated the kitchen of their 40-year-old home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., they went all the way to the dark side — from the cabinets, counters and backsplash “A dark kitchen may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the results are undeniably unique and gorgeous. Now, with the beautiful space and outstanding appliances, I have no excuse for not producing great food!” - Homeowner Peter Chudoba

right down to the black grout between the black floor tiles. “Pursuing a darker kitchen appealed to us,” says Peter, a dentist. “We both felt it was different yet striking, and allowed for a clean and contemporary style.” The transformation started in 2018, when Peter and Lorraine realized their 25-year-old range was on its last legs. Renovation is a slippery slope and soon, with a clear direction in mind, the couple consulted O.NIX Kitchens & Living — a boutique Toronto firm specializing in fine cabinetry from Germany and Italy. “When Peter’s not working,

he loves to cook for others,” says Erika Luisa dela Cruz, co-founder of O.NIX. “He’d already sketched out where he wanted things to go and considered the function, and we worked with him to capture that vision.” With O.NIX taking the lead on cabinet design and floor plan, local designer Brie Gallagher guided Peter and Lorraine through the finishing touches and best choices for counters, tile, and lighting.

German-made Zeyko cabinets in Slate and Basalt Grey matte lacquer envelop the room with velvety softness, while the tile backsplash adds shimmer and sophistication for contrast.

The kitchen wasn’t the only zone that got a makeover; a wall came down to open the space up, creating an adjacent dining room and TV lounge. Now, the wide-open space is ideal for dinners à deux or entertaining family and friends. “Peter and Lorraine’s house doesn’t have a modern exterior, so people assume the kitchen might be more traditional,” says dela Cruz. “But they’re floored when they see this!” Peter agrees their kitchen may not be for everyone, but he and Lorraine wouldn’t change a thing: “It’s exactly the look and feel we love,” he says. “Even my 86-year-old father loves the colours, materials, style, and craftsmanship!”

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Something about shine and kitchens go so well together. The monotone palette of this look showcases the true star of the space: Light. Mirror-framed glass cabinetry reflects brightness around the room, in turn bouncing off the recycled-glass island top and series of glass pendant lights. Add to that the interior-lit glass cabinet, which floats dramatically in the dark wall, and the result is high style all around. Touchless latches and thoughtful reveals in the cabinetry add to the sleekness of the space.

The love of the kitchen runs deep at Downsview. For the past five decades, the Toronto-based family company has approached sleek counters and elegant cabinetry as an art form. P A C K A winning mix of family life and luxury amenities define designer Miriam Manzo’s dream home. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Larry Arnal

W

When Vaughan, Ontario-based designer and builder Miriam Manzo was ready to build her dream house, and a three-acre lot in an older pocket of the city came on the market, she didn’t hesitate. With trees covering the acreage, it was the perfect site to build her custom home. “I was ready,” she says. “I had designed a floor plan five years prior to finding the property. My husband, Emilio Manzo, is a builder, developer and contractor, and between the two of us, I knew we could make this the home we’d been waiting for.” The first thing she did was scrap her original floor plan and completely revise her design to better suit the property’s 300-foot-wide frontage. She then walked the land to decide which trees to keep and clear. “I had initially thought we’d put up a 6,000-square-foot house, but after working with the architect and taking my plans into consideration, we settled on a five-bedroom, 7,800-square-foot home with a 3,000-square-foot basement with almost 12-foot ceilings.” Manzo, who runs a home-staging business alongside her design firm, had several must-haves on her wish list. “I knew I wanted nanny quarters, a home gym, a bar and 1000+ bottle wine cellar, a theatre,

Georgian Custom Renovations crafts a dynamic high-end kitchen for a family of foodies. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Larry Arnal

While Gerry and Mirella loved pretty much everything about their warm and inviting Thornhill, Ont., home, they weren’t fond of the most used room in the house. At 200 square feet, the kitchen was cramped, poorly lit, had minimal storage, and it just didn’t fit their lifestyle — they enjoy hosting lively weekend dinners with their kids and grandchildren. So, they turned to Georgian Custom Renovations to fix their kitchen-party woes.

INTEGRATED TECH There were several wish-list additions Georgian brought to fruition, including satisfying Gerry’s desire to watch TV while cooking. “We installed a 32-inch TV on retractable brackets inside the millwork in the cabinet above the appliance garage,” says Gene Maida, president of Georgian Custom Renovations.

BEFORE: “When Gerry and Mirella approached us, their primary concern was the size of the kitchen. They wanted to make it much bigger by reconfiguring the interior,” says Maida. “They barely used the living room, so we immediately decided to remove the wall between the rooms to make one large space for the kitchen.”

127

EYE-CATCHING FEATURES After extensive renovations, the couple ended up with an impeccably designed 400-square-foot kitchen — with plenty of storage and countertop space — that better suits their needs. “When you walk into the kitchen, you now see the stainless-steel vent hood surrounded by a Calacatta slab backsplash that merges seamlessly into the countertop. That area has become the focal point,” says Maida.

HIGH-END APPLIANCES They chose a French double-door Monogram oven and a Wolf cooktop, which is flanked by drawers for pots and cutlery.

PERFECT PALETTE White upper cabinets and grey lowers combined with black pendants and a waterfall countertop impart a sense of drama. Grounding the space is beautiful black-walnut hardwood installed on the diagonal, which creates a dynamism to the room.

BEFORE: The old kitchen was dated and the layout felt cramped. The owners craved wide-open space for entertaining friends and family.

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS “We added a very modern and straight-lined crown moulding, which adds to the contemporary aesthetic of the kitchen, says Maida. A mix of warm materials and cool finishes really gives the room character.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING The layout ensures each commonly used appliance was put in the most convenient spot, allowing for smooth traffic flow and seamless prep work and cooking.

HIDDEN GEMS A sleek Monogram drawer microwave was built into the 10-foot-long island, which comfortably seats six.

A beautiful mix of materials grounds two distinct kitchens by Flexwood Fine Cabinetry

SPACE COWBOY When approached by a builder in Oakville, Ontario to create something truly one of a kind, Martin Guzda had the solution: White, glam, lots of metal. “He wanted something very unique, something you can’t pick up off a shelf,” says Guzda who runs Flexwood Fine Cabinetry with his father Walter. The effect is immediate and impactful. With prominent metal work and high-gloss panels, this kitchen is not for the faint of heart. Guzda took the metal inspiration further by having a chunky bank of drawers custom fabricated by a local metalworker in stainless steel with an elegant mirror finish. The approach was fun and experimental. “We had him mock up some concepts on the fly, “ says Guzda. “It was very tough to put together.” But clearly, it was worth the effort. There were a few other challenges in the process that resulted in beautiful, design-changing solutions. “The high-gloss materials only come in certain lengths, so we designed metal chrome reveals to make it work.” The result is indeed unique, almost futuristic. To light up the space, geometric pendant lights echo the modern view, while LED lighting around the fridges and canopy further accentuate the metal detailing.

SHINING LIGHT Nothing spells comfort like natural materials; its restful on the eye and soulful to the touch. In this west Toronto home, wenge-wood veneer cabinets envelop the room without being overbearing. With lighter tones in a matte finish, the look feels current. The showstopper, though, is a ceiling-height glass cabinet for wine and curiosities. Simple and refined, it delineates the kitchen while leading your eye into the adjoining dining room. In lieu of a heavy centre island, Guzda built integrated floating cabinets on the island that break up the mass and leave breathing room both visually and physically. For the upper cabinets, touch latches were used to keep the look sleek and elegant, with Guzda sourcing understated hardware from Blum. Guzda was inspired to take up the craft of cabinetmaking after spending his youth shadowing his dad on the job. The two work in

Don Alfonso 1890’s open kitchen takes pride of place in the middle of the restaurant with a mezzanine lounge above. Designer Nadia Di Donato installed the kitchen’s counters at 38 inches high to allow for a more unobstructed sightline from the dining room. Guests are led through the kitchen at the end of their meal to complete the dining experience.

It was, as Nadia Di Donato calls it, “ The Michelin Mission.” For two years, the vice president and creative director of the acclaimed Liberty Entertainment Group and her husband, Nick, the group’s president and CEO, toured the globe in search of a high-end partnership with a Michelin-starred chef. The couple’s quest took them from Peru to Italy and it was there, in an elegant trattoria on the Amalfi Coast, that they found what they were looking for in Don Alfonso 1890 — a storied institution established by Chef Alfonso Iaccarino, now being run by his son, Ernesto. “We wanted to translate what we felt discovering Alfonso and Ernesto’s fresh, new cuisine and bring it to Toronto,” says Nadia. “It’s quite a departure from the rustic Italian food we are used to here.” Once the duo secured the historic Consumers’ Gas Building on Toronto Street as the venue, it

was up to Nadia to create a dining space just as memorable as the food itself. Here, she speaks with Living Luxe about bringing the Amalfi Coast to Toronto — with a decidedly modern twist.

You’ve designed more than 20 restaurants in your career. Where do you begin when approaching a new concept? My background is in graphic design, so each project is an art piece. I’m never just thinking about the interior itself — my approach starts with a clear vision of the food we’re serving and the experience we’re creating. I always have to ask and answer one important question: “How do I want the customer to feel?” Dining out is theatrical and emotional. What’s the feeling you hoped to evoke at Don Alfonso 1890? I want people to experience the entire restaurant in the first few minutes, so they can take in the kitchen, which is right in the middle of the restaurant, and appreciate the openness and airiness. I also included high-backed banquettes, which serve as dividers and allow people to be enveloped when they wish for privacy. There’s also an element of subtle luxury — I modelled the chairs after the Cartier “Love” bracelet — but most of all, the words I’d use to describe the mood of Don Alfonso 1890 are fresh, sophisticated, and significant. Are you more concerned with the big picture or are you also involved in the details? For me, design isn’t limited to the space itself: it extends through many layers from the furniture and tableware to the menu and wardrobe of our team. All of these elements combine to create the design magic we’re known for. Were there challenges in working with a landmark building? The classic shell of the Consumers’ Gas Building, which was built in 1852, gave me the opportunity to contrast its historical cornice

mouldings and columns with modern additions, like the artwork, and the sleek five-by-ten porcelain sheets that resemble marble. There are two large-scale artworks that really stand out: The Crane, a sculpture by Philippe Pasqua, and Woman Empowerment, a painting by Toronto artist Daniel Mazzone. Why did those two pieces feel like

LEFT: The mezzanine exudes a casual atmosphere suited to its à la carte menu and molecular cocktail program. An eclectic mix of upholstery fabrics, from linen to leather, creates an inviting mood when juxtaposed with the building’s elaborate cornice mouldings. BELOW: Every element in the dining room was chosen to infuse the historic space with modern elegance, and to highlight the clean and organic approach to coastal Italian cuisine.

the right fit? In this case, I spotted The Crane at Art Basel in Miami and it stopped me in my tracks. It was a bit controversial at first — I was proposing a six-by-four-foot skull for the middle of the restaurant, after all! — but now it’s the picture everyone wants to take. As for Daniel Mazzone’s painting, he and I talked about the motif of significant women through history; it felt timely and I wanted a striking, colourful focal point when you enter the restaurant’s white palette. Why is art such an important feature in your designs? Fine art is like an accent piece of jewellery and it’s my signature to include individually curated or commissioned art pieces. They reflect the personality of the space and add originality and intrigue.

Soak It In The bathroom experts at AMATI share their picks for the year’s hottest looks. By Catherine MacIntosh

Whether you have a spacious master ensuite, or a condo-sized bathroom, a beautiful tub is a game changer. The freestanding tub, it seems, is this year’s hot-ticket item, along with all the beautiful tub fillers and adjacent showers that go with it. While a cast-iron tub appeals to many of us, at 400 pounds, they often aren’t feasible. Reynold Lobo of AMATI shares some of the now endless chic alternatives.

Classic Beauty A tub named after a king’s birthplace is bound to feel regal. The freestanding beauty is composed of Volcanic Limestone™ and resin, a material that’s much harder and more durable than acrylic. A high-gloss finish is easy to maintain, while the exterior can be painted in a variety of colours. Designed by Meneghello Paolelli Associati, the Pembroke tub by Victoria + Albert is both versatile and fashionable.

State of the Art If taking a bath is your idea of therapy, this tub from BainUltra’s urBAIN collection is ideal. This modern option is clean-lined and sleek. Ideal for condos and modest-sized rooms, the Vibe 5828 is designed to fit smaller spaces. The therapeutic tub comes with a hydro-thermo massage system to ease back pain and increase circulation, not to mention take away the day’s worries. This ergonomic bath is sure to please even the most discerning eye, while its sloped walls amp up the comfort level.

Blue Lagoon When finished in a vibrant sapphire blue, the Amiati bath from Victoria + Albert has an artful edge. Reminiscent of painted claw-foot tubs of yesteryear, this shapely bath would steal the show in any ensuite. In fact, the tub can be finished in an astonishing array of shades, sure to please everyone. The tub’s classic appeal would work in both modern and traditional settings.

146

The Deep End The star of this bathroom may be the view and that sculptural tub, but every freestanding tub needs an elegant tub filler. The MOD+ floor-mounted model by Graff is the jewellery on this well-appointed ensemble. Graff has a reputation for longevity and service, yet the main appeal is their elegant faucets and tub fillers. This one comes in more than 20 finishes for achieving just the right look.

Small and Mighty Ideal for condos and smaller houses, the Vibe 6030 by BainUltra gives the feeling of a freestanding tub in an alcove design. Deep and inviting, the tub can be clad in various materials for a luxurious finish. With options for hydro-thermo massage and chromatherapy (in violet, red, orange, yellow, and green) for an easy psychological lift, it’s a powerhouse of a little tub.
