The holidays are here! It seems impossible. I just closed the pool, swept fall leaves, (still sweeping) and handed out Halloween candy. This quote I recently came across, ... seems to sum up my life quite eloquently. “Time is that quality of nature which keeps events from happening all at once. Lately it doesn’t seem to be working.” -anonymous When our kids were younger (although I still do it) and school was just starting I would ask them to raise their hands and wave it into the air… and then tell them “the next time you remember doing this (fill in the blank) birthday, holidays, vacation would be here.” In fact, our youngest son Michael just started Law School at UNH this fall. While we were helping him move into his new apartment in Concord, NH, I asked him to raise his hand and wave it around...He knew what was coming, he did it anyway. It is amazing how well it works! Lately there has been a husge vocal movement to remind consumers to “Buy Local”. Diane and I always try to support local businesses, because we are a local business too. Supporting all business’ in our area first and throughout the country is healthy for the economy, which in turn benefits all of us in the end. The USA economy works when people are spending, (of course we realize that you have to have it to spend too). This holiday season as you look through the pages of our Holiday Gift guides, we hope that you will support our advertisers, both big and small. Several holiday’s ago, our family started a tradition when the kids were starting to having a better understanding of “giving” during the holiday’s and not just getting. We always donate clothing, jackets and toys to one of the local charities who is able to give it directly to a person and or family less fortunate than ourselves. We encourage all of our readers to start their own tradition and find an organization that will put donated items directly into the hands of the people who need it the most. Our Gift Guide is packed with many remarkable products. We know that you will not be disappointed with any of our recommendations because we have sampled every product. Be sure to check out some of the great wines and fantastic foods that we have discovered along the way!

Enter: Where’s Valentino Contest

Whether you are willing to admit it or not, we know everyone has searched for Waldo at least once or twice in his or her lifetime. Actually, we have a complete set of the “Where’s Waldo” Books and have successfully found him in all of them, ...Well almost all of them, except for one. We have made up our minds that the one page that we cannot find him on must be a mistake, a misprint maybe, and he is not on there at all. Looking and re-looking over the years has never allowed us to rest, and we occasionally pull the book out for what we profess to be the very last search…of course until the next time we feel compelled to look. We desperately needed something to take our minds off Waldo and that page; you know the one they forgot to place him in anyway, because what other logical reason could there possibly be for us not being able to find him? Therefore, we decided to create something that would divert our energy away from you know who, and brilliantly came up with “Where’s Valentino?” Only thank goodness we are not the ones that have to find him... you do. So you see we can drive everyone else crazy looking for Valentino and we can relax because of course we know where he is.

Wow! There are thousands of readers who search for Valentino month after month, hiding somewhere on the pages of each issue of LWM; the entries keep pouring in.

We hope you have had fun looking, and will continue your quest to find Valentino. When you find him email us: info@livingwellmagazine. net [Please type “Valentino” on the subject line]. Valentino was on page 44 lying down in the grassy field catchy a few rays while the weather was still nice.. This month we will be giving away some of the books/ cookbooks and other goodies from our gift guide. Valentino loves fan mail so keep entering for your chance to win! and Please make sure you Like Us on Facebook at facebook.com/lwmlivingwellmagazine

40 pounds lost with 3 weeks to go.

Find out how Sean has decided to fight back after years of pain resulting in surgery from a severe back injury caused by being hit by a car his second year in college and then he was later diagnosed with heart failure. Sean gained over one hundred pounds as a result and is now determined to lose the weight; the one part of his health he does have control over. Sean started his journey prior to his trip to The Biggest Loser Resort, losing 40 lbs., with the help of a trainer and dieting on his own, taking over a year to do it. Now after just 8 weeks at BLR, Sean is down another 40 pounds, weighing under 300 pounds for the first time in over 6 years! So Sean’s journey continues at The Biggest Loser Resort Fitness Ridge until December 15, 2012. Thanks to the staff at the BLR, Sean will be returning with the knowlege and the tools to continue his journey whereever that may be. Part 2 of Sean’s journey will appear in the January issue of LWM, and you won’t want to miss it. www.livingwellmagazine.net

Why is this owl so important?

O W L

12

nce a common species in California and across North America, the Western burrowing owl has become a rarer and rarer sight over the last three decades given habitat loss and other environmental perils the bird faces.

www.livingwellmagazine.net

December 2012

FAST FACTS: The Burrowing Owl is about 7 1/2 - 10 inches tall with a wingspan of 21 - 24 inches, and weighs 4 1/2 - 9 ounces. Unlike most owls, the male bird is slightly heavier and has a longer wingspan than the females. Western burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) are tiny, long-legged members of the owl family, native to the Americas and preferring open landscapes where they can dig new holes or use existing ones (such as abandoned prairie dog, skunk or armadillo homes) to nest and rear their young. Unlike most other owl species, these small but charismatic birds are more often seen out and about during daylight hours, but they are most active and do their primary feeding at night, preferring a diet of small rodents and large insects. Once a common species in California and across North America, the Western burrowing owl has become a rarer and rarer sight over the last three decades given habitat loss and other environmental perils the bird faces. Biologists consider the bird an indicator of wider ecosystem health, so if its population numbers are healthy then local ecosystems are likely thriving. But these days the bird is endangered in Canada and threatened in Mexico, is a state endangered species in Colorado, and is considered a “species of special concern” in Florida and most of the western U.S. It is also listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN’s) international “Red List” of endangered and threatened species (albeit as a species of “Least Concern” in comparison with others in more dire straits). A group of dedicated birders, conservationists, biologists and concerned citizens in San Francisco’s East Bay came together to protect dwindling burrowing owl populations locally but ended up creating a movement that spans the entire North American continent. Their group, the Burrowing Owl Conservation Network (BOCN) believes that burrowing owls are vital to maintaining healthy, functioning ecosystems, and as such is working on several fronts to help protect habitat and reverse the animal’s population slide.

When alarmed, young birds will make a hissing call that sounds like a rattlesnake. First and foremost, BOCN works to conserve habitat for burrowing owls in California and beyond, including constructing artificial burrows to help re-establish burrowing owl colonies while larger ecosystem restoration efforts are underway. Teaching children and communities about ways they can help protect and improve burrowing owl habitat is another important part of BOCN’s work. Other ways the group helps the owls is by advocating for legislation and policy changes that encourage conservation of habitat, networking with like-minded individuals and institutions, and conducting field and laboratory research to increase understanding about how to help burrowing owls and create habitat conditions ideal for their survival. The fact that burrowing owl populations in other parts of the world are rebounding gives hope to BOCN and other wildlife advocates and environmentalists. The birds are common and widespread in Central and South America, where they inhabit fields and even sometimes parks in urban areas. Whether the birds can replicate their success in Latin America up north remains to be seen. As for what readers can do to help, learning about the behavior, biology and habitat needs of wild animals like the burrowing owl is a sure way to develop respect for nature’s inhabitants and a lifelong willingness to protect them. And nothing beats witnessing burrowing owls go about their rounds. Seeing them in the wild is enough to convince anyone that they are worth fighting to protect.

In Your Own Voice It’s been six months since I’ve written an article for Living.Well Magazine that isn’t based on an interview I had with a best-selling author about a recently published book. I actually have two more amazing authors lined up for interviews – stay tuned in 2013! – yet I felt a deep need to write this last column of 2012 straight from my heart to yours, in my own voice. I wanted to keep things pure and simple. I’ve discovered that, in many respects, writing articles based on the published work and philosophy of others is more “work” than writing an original piece. It requires more time – preparing for the interview, conducting and recording the interview, listening to it afterward and taking notes, organizing the notes into themes for articles, writing and editing the articles – and attention to a new kind of detail: wanting to honor and convey the spirit of the author in a kind, fair and genuine way. I certainly wouldn’t say I labored over those articles – the whole process was much too fun for that kind of exaggerated characterization – yet I can say I’m somewhat relieved to be sitting here, just me and my laptop, with my own thoughts and an open, hopeful heart. Let’s see, what was that about my own thoughts? Oh, yes, now I’m remembering the “work” of writing an original piece: being original. I hate that part. Then again, I’ve learned over the years that being completely “original” can be vastly overrated – or maybe it’s more accurate to say that we often misunderstand what it actually means to be original. How many of us have discarded our secret longings to, say, open a yoga studio or write a book about parenting or maybe just play with watercolors? We tell ourselves the world doesn’t need another __________ (yoga studio, book, artist…you name it) and get on with the nuts and bolts of running our busy lives.

14

I’ve had that inner debate several times, and it was ignited again after interviewing the luminous Anita Moorjani and the deliciously humorous and wise Tama Kieves. (Not to mention reading their penetrating, well-written and transformationinducing books.) Some part of me questioned the value of my own teaching and writing. What was the point, really, of creating new articles and blog posts and courses and maybe even a book, when I could just refer clients to the books and blogs of countless other insanely talented writers and teachers? After all, we’re out there sharing similar messages, yet they’ve got the momentum and machinery of “best-selling author” status behind them to reach hundreds of thousands of people. What are the chances of my being heard? And anyway, what value do I provide that people aren’t already getting from Tama and Anita and all those other wildly successful teachers leading workshops at Omega and Kripalu? If I was my own coach I’d grab myself by the shoulders and shake lightly – but firmly. I’d look myself straight in the eyes and remind myself of this potent truth, which I love to share with as many people as I can who want to listen: You matter, and what you love matters. You are here to bring forth your unique talent and brilliance, led by your genuine desires. What else could you do with your time here on Earth that could be more important? It is not up to your small, fearful self to decide what the world needs. It’s your job to wake up to your large, magnificent self and live from that expanded and generous place. And here’s something else I love to remind people – and myself: your very presence is unique and irreplaceable. Even if you’re saying or doing things that others have apparently said or done, it is still completely original because it comes from you. It bears what I call your exceptional, inimitable energy signature. People will respond to your message or product who have not responded

— continued on next page

to similar messages and products from others, because they’re on your frequency. Wouldn’t it be a shame if you weren’t making it available to them…all because you discounted your own dreams for not being “original” enough? And yet I’m not just talking here about things you can offer as an entrepreneur or an employee. This isn’t only about careers and commerce. It’s about recognizing your innate value and worthiness and the transformative power of your shining, genuine presence. When you’re centered and relaxed and relating to others from your true core, you are a force for good in the world. Your special blend of qualities and talents – such as kindness, humor, insightfulness, artistry, calmness, technological brilliance, peacefulness, clarity, love of language, athleticism, compassion and countless others – are inherently inspiring and uplifting to others. Your special blend is completely original. And much needed. Recognizing, honoring and sharing your special blend is fundamentally the same thing as finding and living your calling. It’s all about being authentically, joyfully you. I often say the deep impulse to find and live your calling arises from the inner workings of a beautifully designed system: what you most long to create, share or experience is what the world most needs from you. So when you dare to follow your dreams, you not only open yourself to a deeply fulfilled life, you are naturally in service to others.

And you’ll know this song is for you. Have fun singing it in your own voice. Wishing you deep peace and newfound joy this holiday season. She is a graduate of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing’s intensive four-year program in mind-body-spirit healing, and is a former fitness instructor who taught aerobics, body sculpting and yoga for 16 years. I know I’m not the first person to tell you that following your dreams leads to fulfillment, and I certainly won’t be the last. The message is not – dare I say it - an original one. Yet I hope, through my own unique blend of teaching and writing, to add a new voice to the chorus, giving our song greater nuance and depth and harmony. And maybe, with my voice added to the mix, you’ll hear it in a whole new way.

Some hotels and hotel chains take sustainability more seriously than others, but the industry as a whole has certainly become greener in recent years. Those little cards may seem like token environmentalism, but they can actually result in significant water, waste and cost reductions. The website Economically Sound reports that a 150-room hotel can conserve 72,000 gallons of water and 480 gallons of laundry soap every year by placing the cards in its guest rooms. The Marriott chain reported saving as much as 17 percent in hot water and sewer costs at its hotels thanks to implementation of its Linen Reuse Program. While many hotels and chains print up their own cards, thousands more purchase them from the Green Hotels Association, a non-profit launched two decades ago to bring together hotels around the U.S. and elsewhere that share a commitment to the environment and sustainable use of natural resources. The organization’s Catalog of Environmental Products for the Lodging Industry contains a wide range of environmentally friendly energyand water-saving products. For example, 500 laminated copies of the group’s best selling card (asking guests to consider not having sheets changed every day) costs hoteliers just $200. Another example is the toilet tank fill diverter, which saves about 3/4 of a gallon of water per flush while remaining invisible to guests. The little gadgets cost hotels around $1 and as such pay for themselves in no time thanks to reduced water bills. The catalog also features dispensers that eliminate the waste of stocking every bathroom with soap bars and little bottles of hair and skin care products.

World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which works to improve the quality of tourism around the world. Under its Environment Initiative, WTTC aims to solidify a global vision on how the tourism industry can foster sustainable development. It has been especially pro-active around the mitigation of carbon emissions and last year, along with the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and 12 major hotel chains including Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and Starwood, launched the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative, which aims to help hotels reduce, measure and communicate their carbon footprints. This is particularly relevant, says WTTC, for hotels’ corporate clients who want to quantify the carbon footprints of their hotel stays, meetings and events. Another positive trend is the Four Seasons’ 10 Million Trees Initiative. The hotel chain is celebrating its 50th anniversary by planting 10 million trees across the 34 countries in which it operates with the hope that the effort will help combat deforestation and global warming and attract more customers concerned about the state of the planet. “My purpose for this December’s article is twofold: to peek into the world of artisans and their materials, hopefully dispelling any myths and Pollyanna notions about what it takes to set up space in a home or studio for creative projects. And, with gift-giving season upon us, to think about seeking out other “handmadens.” There are craft and art shows galore as well as open studio tours, and there’s nothing quite like giving something unique and one of a kind to make someone feel special.’ Karen Jessee

Years ago, I signed up for a course in mosaics, thinking I was going to become a great “arteest,” Having come out prop building and mask making, I mistakenly asked the question, “How hard can this be?” Once in a real mosaic studio, two things were immediately evident: These were extremely heavy materials and the space required to manage such materials was large. There were countless shelves and boxes of glass, tiles, stones, mirrors and wood. There were anvils, hammers, cutters, adhesives, grouts and cements. Whether I took this craft seriously or not, I would have to work again in my chilly basement and invest in costly materials I could barely lift or cut. What would I do with what I made? With no good answer looming, I tiled my flower pot, made a table top and went home knowing that while I would always love this art, it was not mine to do.

Handmadens By Karen Jessee

Alan and Maria travel to 5 different states doing 27 craft shows a year that also feature demonstrations of how pottery is created. For these demonstrations, they have to erect a space 10’ X 20’ meaning their van is not only filled with the display shelves and pottery that is going to be sold, it is also filled with the walls to build the display room along with the pottery wheel. As his art is his business, it means creating, packing, hauling, carrying, building, setting up, breaking down and driving as well as marketing, advertising, documenting, purchasing, storing, and keeping accounts. Alan and Maria do it all, and they do it well. This is a team effort. Artisans and crafters who may not have the degree in the arts but who have the eye for design and the Midas touch have their own ways of organizing.

Still, I have continued to marvel how those who make beautiful things by hand set up their space so there is room to do their craft and still live in comfort. Let me introduce you to a few. Since 1974, ceramic artist and teacher Alan Burslem, who has a Masters of Fine Arts, has been designing and creating a diverse line of high-fire pottery and sculpture in the historical village of Arden. Known for his extremely large pieces both functional and decorative, Alan’s best secrets are these: his wife, Maria, and an addition on his home that allows him to cater strictly to this art. There are two large rooms on the lower level for storing raw materials, color, glazes, tools, and for creating pieces on the wheel and with slabs. Another room holds four electric kilns. One walkin gas kiln that is 5’ high is housed in yet another building. Two rooms upstairs feature display shelves and tables for open studio events and sales.

Gail Caron of Spirit Horse Creations has been weaving textiles on a loom for 18 years and weaving baskets for 16. It all began when she admired some placemats at a restaurant. Unable to find them for sale anywhere, she decided she would make them herself and purchased the materials and the loom. In hindsight, the easiest thing would have been to ask the restaurant if she could buy a set of their mats, but then she would have missed out on a whole new adventure. She began weaving baskets as therapy for nerve damage to her arm following a car accident. She took a course at a local night school and became hooked on making large, functional baskets associated with the Southern Highlands.

Nancy Owens creates jewelry from vintage pieces and newer finds. She made and sold her first jewelry back in the 60’s. But her latest journey into the creative arts has led her to making beaded handbags using a small loom and vintage purse findings. While software for images does exist, most of Nancy’s work is old school: research, graph paper and a pencil. It is slow work and small work to create such wonders, and that all beads are not created equal means that careful attention to size and color is most important. Nancy relaxes and creates from her bed, working from an adjustable hospital tray table on wheels. She keeps supplies within arm’s reach in drawer-like containers housed in a bookcase in her bedroom. Her spare bedroom, however, is a delight of shelving filled with hat boxes, vintage clothing, jewelry findings, display cases, and containers filled with a myriad of decorative pieces and textiles. A small section of her basement is dedicated to the workbench and tools needed for metalwork and gems, which are all neatly organized in boxes with glass fronts.

She claims one of the most difficult aspects of both types of weaving is the huge amount of space the supplies and equipment require. Looms are large, sometimes massive. She has five of them in various sizes. She confesses she has cones of yarn on bookshelves, in boxes, in plastic containers and basket reeds all over the place. Once that nice tight coil of reed is opened, it just never goes back. So, it’s not so much that Gail has set up space in her home for weaving, but rather her weaving has simply taken over her home. Sometimes that’s just the way it is, and Gail, like numerous other crafters and artisans, is comfortable with it.

Thomas Tear is a designer by trade, but his ability to manipulate and create things both large and small has taken him into some interesting arenas. Thomas has been replicating historical dresses and bonnets from the Civil War era for a number of years in a studio he has set up in his basement. There are sewing machines, dress forms, and numerous labeled drawers of laces, supplies, decorative pieces and the required cutting table for large fabrics. His finished projects are housed in labeled, clear garment bags suspended from the ceiling. However, his latest craft is recreating Victorian hair jewelry. Though often mistaken for mourning jewelry, hair jewelry is actually meant to be a commemorative, sentimental, or fashion statement, or a love token. Thomas’ specialty is table worked hair jewelry which is made on a braiding table. Strands of hair held together by a series of weights and bobbins feed through a hole in the center of the table, creating a three dimensional chain. As Thomas sets up his tent and trade at various Civil War functions, his entire system is portable. Everything can be carried neatly in a box in one hand, the braiding table in the other. Thomas is also the author of Memoirs of a Confederate Gentleman. His entire book moved from his computer to a flash drive to a printer to the publisher. Mark Twain saw the demise of the quill pen and was the first to write a novel on a typewriter. He would have been in awe.

The Art of Eating

Recognizing Food When You See It By Eric Aber

Food, energy, nutrients, nourishment, it’s all around everywhere one looks. We are surrounded by it, sometimes obviously and many times more subtle. Often though it seems the more obvious, overt and convenient the choice, the less fulfilling it ends up being. Then, there are those moments of serendipitous happenstance when one feels as if a discovery has been made. A step into the culinary unknown. It may be a small farm stand on the side of the road. It could be a unpretentious hole it the wall tucked in between its, established neighboring restaurants. And if the seasons right it may be foraged from the ground beneath your feet. It is important that we attune ourselves and our senses to spot these diamond in the rough experiences. That we allow ourselves to take the risk of trying something new. It is in that moment, though at first slightly uncomfortable, in the end ultimately becomes a memorable part of our collective culinary repertoire. It allows us to grow beyond our previously held notions of what IS food. I have often found, the more off the beaten path; the more thought, care, and pride has been invested in the raising, collection or production of the edibles. It is in these small venues, outside of the common collective food-engine, that people are still devoting the time, energy and “love to the craft of fulfilling societies most basic need of sustainment. It is in this mindset and with this perspective that one should approach the gathering of food. Take the time to slow down and stop at the roadside stand and sample the often simple but transcendent goodies being offered by the person who had a hand in preparing them. Be willing to purchase eggs, meat, and dairy from a local farmer who cares for the animals as an extension of their family. Take the time to learn some common plants such as honeysuckle, wild mustard, and lambsquarters. These heirloom plants have sustained life for years before modern food outlets came to the forefront of our society. In the end it becomes a subtle way of paying attention to the world around you. Opening up to the options that may have flown under the radar. Being receptive to trying something new and different. Allowing for the small failures or disappointments to ebb in to the background of our minds, while pushing the successes into our more conscious forefront. www.livingwellmagazine.net

Eric Aber co-owns the award winning restaurant Home Grown Cafe in Newark, DE with his wife Sasha. In addition to the cafe, he enjoys foraging for wild mushrooms and other edibles, traveling, practicing Ninpo, playing music, furthering his culinary knowledge and spending time with his family. Why The Pain In Your Arms, Legs, Feet Or Hands Won’t Go Away! By Dr. Scott E. Rosenthal

Yes, you ARE a victim of the modern age! You spend much of your day banished for hours sitting in traffic, locked and chained to a work station or your home computer, and captivated on the couch watching TV. Your body is sustained in awkward positions. Your posture is crooked, compromised and fatiguing. Your neck cocks forward, causing your muscles to grip desperately to the back of your skull. The bands of connective tissue and muscles in your pelvis shorten and tighten for hours while you sit oddly perched on a chair. When the day brings needed breaks to your sedentary punishment, you suffer the results. Standing slowly, you teeter to a balance. Your body rebels against further movement. Like millions of people in your predicament, you suffer from pain in the arms, wrists, hands, feet or legs. Is your pain NOT going away? Despite the many attempts to relieve your symptoms with pills, vibrating massage gadgets, evergreen-smelling icy hot creams and daily, reluctant rubs from an impatient loved-one, nothing helps. Enough is enough! A quick visit to your physician leads to a trip to the drug store where you receive a 22

goody bag of strong pills and high hopes. Like many, you run through the course of medication and still find that the pain returns. Frustrated, concerned and hurting, you return to your doc’s office. This time he sends you off to the specialist. After a steroid injection or two, your pain is finally gone... but, again returns. This result is of no surprise. Research on steroid injections for common chronic shoulder and elbow problems revealed that “no long-term benefit was shown.”1 Months go by and you have waited-to-see, swallowed tummy-irritating pills, spent weeks smelling like a fresh-cut Christmas tree, wore out the hands of your partner (who now, incidentally, has carpal tunnel syndrome from giving you too many massages), have been to this doctor and that doctor, wished really, really hard, but the PAIN PERSISTS! “ NOW WHAT?” you ask? I have the answer! It may surprise you? Time is of the essence- Go to the chiropractor! Failed treatment is too often the result of how your condition was viewed. Pain in a joint such as the knee or elbow is treated separately, as if the knee or elbow www.livingwellmagazine.net

is not attached to the rest of the body. In chiropractic, we view the body in a holistic manner. We look at the whole person. Your arms and legs are integrated systems, dependent on each part working together. For example, the knee can only work properly if there is normal hip and ankle flexibility. The same goes for your upper extremities. By addressing each part individually and then as a system, pain is relieved and better function returns. Take Jayne, for example. She came into my office with chronic wrist pain. Like so many of you, Jayne tried many treatments to no avail. I evaluated her wrist and found that several of the bones were fixated and moving incorrectly. Looking further, I found other common layers of issues that accompany this popular malady. Her lower neck bones were misaligned, resulting in abnormal tensions in the muscles that connect from the neck region to the upper extremity at the shoulder. There was damage to the nerves coming out of the lower neck. These nerves affect the regions from the shoulder to the fingers. Jayne’s elbow also had a twisting misalignment. She had torsion and tensions in her myofascia (sheath-like connective tissue — continued on next page

W e c a a

— continued from previous page

that surrounds, binds and separates muscle). Although she had no pain in the neck, shoulder or elbow, I expected and later identified several sore spots in those areas during palpation. Starting with the neck, I gently adjusted the misaligned and fixated joints. Next the shoulder was cleared, then the elbow, and finally the wrist. Several fingers also required tiny adjustments. Starting with the neck again, another pass was made down to the hand, releasing the connective tissue and muscular components. Jayne’s wrist improved immediately and later resolved after several weeks of care. She was able to again hold her daughter without pain and returned happily to the tennis courts. At times, the global approach is required to be more global. It is not uncommon to find a part of the body responsible that would appear unrelated. One example involves the hip and the wrist. Often the large pelvic bones of the hips become misaligned in a downward and backward direction (the same direction one pushes a wallet into the back pocket). When this occurs, the latissimus dorsi muscle, which attaches between the hip and the humerus (arm bone), can become tight. This results in a pulling of the upper arm and can lead to a cascade of abnormal mechanics in the shoulder, elbow and wrist. Run the body for several weeks or months on this faulty system, and a painful breakdown can occur. At times, patients feel wrist or shoulder relief when the hip misalignment was corrected, and before the upper extremity was

even touched. A strategy that includes a full evaluation and treatment of all tissues and regions involved is essential if long-term results are to be appreciated. Pills and needles may have their place and can temporarily reduce symptoms, but they can’t move bones! The chiropractic approach goes beyond the back. It can bring much needed relief to all parts of your body that suffer from pain and dysfunction. Since it is unlikely you will leave the traffic jams and poor postures of the modern world and move to a remote cabin in the Himalayas, visit the doctor of chiropractic. Then get back to your work station... but this time, with lasting comfort! 1 Ann Rheum Dis2009;68:1843-1849 doi:10.1136/ard.2008.099572

by:Lauren Golt

Rachel Starrett is a marketing coordinator for Father Martin’s Ashley and owner of The Closet Coach, a wardrobe editing and styling business. You can tell by the latter that Rachel has a relationship with fashion. Her years studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan taught her a lot, however one of the biggest lessons she learned was the 80/20 rule; most people wear 20% of their wardrobe, 80% of the time. The statistic resonated with Rachel, who had a closet stuffed with clothes that weren’t “her”. Now she has a modest wardrobe full of pieces that reflect her personal style, a strategy Rachel teaches her Closet Coach clients. Confident and creative are the first two qualities that come to mind when you meet Rachel. Her style is fresh, original and personal. Two looks Rachel currently loves are leather and menswear. “I always love it when fashion takes a turn toward masculine, sleek, silhouettes and fabrics,” she says. 1.

Describe your personal style in 3 words:

Edgy, polished and forward. 2.

Who would you consider your “style icon”?

Most of my style icons are fashion editors, and the quintessential French woman, I've always wished I were French. My favorite editors right now are Taylor Tomasi-Hill, Christine Centenera and Joanna Hillman. 3. Where are your favorite shopping spots (both online and in person)? I'm not loyal to anywhere! Consignment stores are the best for great finds at less expensive prices; Designer Consigner in Hockessin and Buffalo Exchange in Philadelphia and New York are my favorites. I love Marshall's and Target for inexpensive fashionable finds. I go to Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom for investment pieces. I LOVE renttherunway.com for special events. 4.

What is your most recent purchase?

Most recently, I splurged on a pair of classic Trina Turk hounds tooth ankle trousers. I got them 40% off and I'll wear them to death, cost per wear! 5. Do you look for a bargain or is price not an issue if you really love it? My rule is generally if I love it, it's not a trend item, its good quality and I won't be able to find something similar on sale, I'll splurge. But I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes with pulling off a great look at a great price. I have a rose gold watch from target and people ask me if it's Cartier. 6.

What are some of your beauty must-haves?

Lancôme BB cream tinted moisturizer w/ sunscreen, Lancôme Rouge in Love lipstick in "Sequence of Love", (an orange-red 24

shade) and Loreal Voluminous CARBON BLACK mascara. I never leave the house without an even complexion, curled eyelashes and mascara. I get that from my Mom! 7. buy?

If you had endless amounts of money, what would you

A custom walk in closet first and foremost, a farmhouse with land somewhere peaceful for my husband and I, a pair of Christian Louboutin d'Orsays in black, and every Alexander Wang collection in entirety. 8.

What is your all-time favorite outfit that you ever wore?

So far, it was my simple, ivory, silk chiffon gown from J.Crew I wore with an oversized gold cuff. I looked very Grecian and was very comfortable. It was my wedding day. 9.

What are your favorite style magazines and blogs?

Oh man. I subscribe to so many magazines. I have always been a Harper's Bazaar devotee rather than Vogue. I don't know why, I just like Bazaar better. The others are In Style, Nylon, Elle, Marie Claire and Glamour. Blogs are far too many to name but my top three would be OlsensAnonymous, The Sartorialist and WhoWhatWear. Honorable mention goes to Manrepeller, she's hilarious. 10. What is the best piece of style advice you’ve ever given or received? I’ve received fashion advice indirectly from my favorite people in the industry. Diana Vreeland’s saying “elegance is restraint” has always stuck with me. The best advice I can give is to find joy in getting dressed; we express who we are with are clothes, make the best of that, love every piece you own, embrace your shape and feel powerful in the clothes you choose - style doesn’t have a thing to do with size.

The holiday and the New Year will be quickly upon us and we tend to hear the same old sayings and slogans. My favorite is: “New Year, New You.” I see it everywhere. It is catchy, kind of memorable, and something we would perhaps want to believe is true... that a new year could bring a new us, and that would allow us to feel differently about our lives. Although the slogan is catchy, it is wrong on so many levels. This month, I will share with you a few powerful distinctions that will help you not to seek a new you, but to bring out the best of you. This month I am offering you two truths to debunk common myths and untruths that hold us back.

You are NOT broken. We live in a broke/fix world. Traditionally when you seek therapeutic help, they will try to find out what is wrong with you and try to fix you by talking about your past - or worse, by medicating you. Why would you need a “new you?” Is the old you broken? Damaged? Worthless? Absolutely not! But, if you believe it is, then it is. The biggest problem of the broke/fix model (other than it being wrong) is that it assumes you are broken. What if you can not become “fixed?” We all remember Humpty Dumpty’s fate, don’t we? The truth is, you are complete and you are human. This means you will make mistakes, and sometimes even grave ones. You can lose your way and get caught in patterns that don’t serve you or others, BUT, you are not broken. You are enough, and it becomes your responsibility to take back control of your life so that you can have the life you deserve.

By Joe White

more. Slowly, we begin to become less of who we really are and more of what believe we are. The withdrawing only reinforces that we can not handle things and, if we continue down this path, we begin to believe it is really who we are. Resistance in life is a sign that it is working, not that it is not working. It’s like being in the gym and lifting weights. The resistance you feel with each curl is a sign that you are building muscle. The same is true in life. We are all powerful beyond measure, even if we are choosing not to live that way. Awareness, however, is the first step to change... the awareness of where we are and where we want to be. The second step is to know that we can change. The third is knowing that we can change it, and fourth and most important is that it must change now. It is too easy to get caught up in the “tomorrow syndrome,” and the ritual of playing safe in our own lives becomes less like a ritual and more like a rut. So prepare to start this New Year; discard the head trash, the lies, the B.S. that is keeping you stuck. This year it is time to test your wings and see how high you can soar. One of the amazing aspects of the Firewalk Transformation Seminar is that walking barefoot across 1,200-degree coals instantly shifts your frame of what is possible. You don’t need a firewalk to prove that to you, though. All you need is to start stepping out of the comfort zone called your life! Until next month, I wish you much love and passion. Live Free.

 What you are capable of doing far exceeds what you have been willing to do. What we are capable of doing is extraordinary, but often what we are willing to do is quite less. We have conditioned ourselves and allowed ourselves to be conditioned to believe that we are weak, not smart enough, or not good enough. Feeling unequipped, we pull back and withdraw. We choose to engage less and less into life. We choose comfort or the path of least resistance more and 26

Ask the Sex Therapist? with Dianna Palimere, PhD, LCSW

As we near the end of 2012, I wanted to take the opportunity to publicly answer some of the privately asked questions from LWM readers over the past year. It has been a wonderful year and I received some truly fantastic questions from readers. All original names have been replaced for anonymity. Where applicable, I’ve noted the month/issue the reader may have been referring to with their question. Please visit livingwellmagazine.net website for all past articles. Please also note that all articles have been reprinted on my website as well. Enjoy!

Dear Dianna, I really loved reading your “Reclaiming Romance” article and was wondering if you could suggest any more resources for helping my husband and I come up with some ideas for how to be romantic. Thanks, ~Bored in the Bedroom

Dear Bored in the Bedroom, If you liked what I suggested in that article, [February 2012] I bet you will love the couples resource book, “101 Nights of Grrrreat Romance” by Laura Corn. The book consists of 101 sealed pages, filled with “seductions” for both you and your partner. Once each week or how ever often you’d like, you tear out one of the sealed pages. For women, they are labeled “For her eyes only” and for men they are labeled “For his eyes only.” You’ll each find one that seems appropriate, and both of you will follow the “secret instructions” detailed inside throughout the week, building the romance as you move toward the end of the week. This book is a great way to get the romance in your relationship to be more spontaneous and creative! Enjoy! Dianna,

Dear Dianna, I read your article on being “normal” last month [March 2012] and I was wondering if you could tell me if it’s normal that I can’t have an orgasm with my boyfriend during just sex. I usually need some kind of touch on the outside to have one, if you know what I mean. Am I normal? ~Clitorally Confused Dear Clitorally Confused, Yes, my dear, you are normal. Approximately 70% of women need clitoral stimulation to have an orgasm. So, if you are not one of those lucky 30%, don’t fret. First things first, I suggest you have a conversation with your partner about your needs. Second, the two of you can explore various options for clitoral stimulation, including using your hands, oral sex, or toys. For some ideas on toys, see my August 2012 article, “Let’s Make Sex FUN Again!” You may need to try a few things out on your own and then share what “works” with your partner. Relax and have fun, Dianna

Dear Dianna, Thank you so much for writing about fertility! [See November 2012] We’ve been trying to get pregnant for about 14 months now, and it has felt very lonely and frustrating. I read somewhere that having problems with your thyroid could affect fertility, is that true? ~ Still Trying Dear Still Trying, Yes, that is in fact true. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is a hormone that you can have your doctor check through blood work. If your Thyroid hormone levels are too high or too low, it could cause problems with your menstrual cycle and ability to conceive. In addition, I suggest you have your doctor do blood work to have all of your hormones checked, just to make sure that you rule out any and all possibilities of a medical issue that may be preventing you from conceiving. Finally, please remember that stress can be enough to cause you to have problems conceiving. As difficult as it may seem, try to relax, exercise, eat healthy and limit as many outside stressors as you can. Furthermore, 14 months isn’t an alarming amount of time to be “trying,” depending on your previous birth control methods (if any), your age, and your health condition(s). Stay positive, and surround yourself with people who love and support you, who are also positive. Warm wishes, Dianna

Thank you all for reading. If you have any questions you’d like answered, please feel free to contact me through my website. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

Q:

You treated me last year for various pains in my back. You requested I change my diet to more alkaline to reduce joint pain. Since, I have been cured of a severe gastrointestinal illness, I feel younger. What can I do next to reverse the aging process further,, to feel even better?

A: Q:

My work requires longer hours on the computer,I get to a point that my shoulder blades are screaming in pain and I have an incredibly severe headache. What is happening, what can I do?

A:

I get a visual of you slumped forward with rounded shoulder and dangling head pecking away intensely and I can feel your pain. First, let’s address that this postural habit will create tightness and in a vicious cycle kind of spiral upon itself getting worse over time. It is imperative to stretch into an opposite posture in order to open muscles that tighten in this posture, allowing the muscles that would counter this pose to engage without a fight with the tight muscles. Let me explain further. Sitting slouched allows a muscle in the abdomen that lies on the front of the spine and connects the spine to the hip to tighten. This pulls forward on the rib cage. The head slides forward more than it already is and the shoulders round encouraging tightness in the pectoral muscles of the front of the shoulders and suboccipital muscle at the base of the head. In order to sit up straight the psoas muscle needs to be stretched. You can do this by sliding to the side of your bed while lying on your back and letting your leg drop off feeling the stretch in the the lower abdominal area and breathing deeply to open as stretching. Next, a doorway stretch of the arms to open the pectoral muscles should be done at 3 different degrees of motion, 45 degrees, 90 degrees and 180 degrees. Prone passive extension of the lumbar spine or Cobra in Yoga is a fantastic stretch for people who must sit a great deal including drivers. Finally putting your chin in the drawer a posterior glide of the head on the neck is also a required stretch for the suboccipital muscles countering the forward head posture. This exercise works well to alleviate a headache as it is coming on, to abate it. Now that things are loosened up and the forces that oppose sitting up straight are decreased, it is a time to address strengthening of the muscles that pull those angel wings, head, shoulders and spine into proper position. This can be done by lifting the sternum, hiding your angel wings technically called scapulae by retracting them and gliding the head back. This looks like exaggerated good posture. Repeating this throughout the day many times, stimulates the right muscles to fire, reminding them of proper positioning. Getting up frequently and doing Cobra or modified in standing will reduce the stress of sitting drastically.

We are very Blessed to live in this time of awareness and incredible ability to share information with one another based on actual experience. I am delighted your entire body had a response to decreasing acid input and increasing alkaline intake by making educated and disciplined choices in your food selection. The next place I guide my patients is on hydration. It is imperative to drink good water. Not all water is good for you. for example in city water from a reservoir they have found loads of medications that have been excreted into the sewer system and trickled back into our drinking water as well as high amounts of arsenic not to mention chlorine and fluoride. This is a huge and debatable topic in and of itself. Your water supply ideally should come from high atop a mountain with as little waste in it from low lying places, septic, sewer and industrial deposits. Depending on where you live this may require extensive filtration or importing water from an outside source. Using glass to contain, store and distribute is also important because water so easily attaches to and absorbs from whatever it contacts. Now, once you choose to hydrate well and in a healthy manner please decrease diuretic type habits such as coffee, tannic acid teas and nicotine. Keeping tissue hydrated is essential for support, cushion, shock absorption and detoxification of just normal waste and byproducts and then if you put poisons into the body such as preservatives and medications the water serves to flush the system of unwanted byproducts. The next step in an anti-aging strategy I request from my patients, is low carbohydrate, gluten free diet. This decreases stress on the pancreas, colon and immune system. A raw food, high greens, and micronutrient emphasis is placed on eating choices. Finally detoxification using sauna, steam, cleansing herbs, colonics and fasting is added seasonally and for any arising health conditions. Exercise and laughter become the new insurance policy to stave away illness and disease allowing the true healthy and vibrant you to positively influence your household, work place and social environment.

Q:

Q:

A:

A:

I have a 7 year old Beagle that has vomited on and off for the past month. It has been as much as three times in the same day. What should I do?

There are numerous potential reasons why a dog might vomit. Some of the possibilities that I would think about would have to do with the possibility of ingesting something that might cause a partial obstruction of the intestinal tract. In other words, does your dog have a personality that would make you think that it may have ingested a foreign body? Foreign bodies can range from a piece of plant material from a toxic plant to a sock, towel, rocks, toy or material of some sort. Some dogs will ingest almost anything if given the chance. You have to think about those types of possibilities. It’s also necessary to determine if you can see anything recognizable in the vomit, such as a round worm parasite that looks like a small piece of spaghetti. Some fecal parasites can go through a life cycle in the animal’s body and end up in the stomach, thereby, being visible in the vomitus. There are other metabolic diseases that can have vomiting as a presenting sign. Renal (kidney) disease is one such possibility, along with pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease. It is best in a situation such as yours to get your dog to the veterinarian to be checked out. A comprehensive physical examination along with some blood work should be a great starting point to determining what the problem is.

Q:

My dog, Samuel, was very sick with liver and heart disease. The veterinarian told us that he stopped breathing and they tried CPR on him. It did not work and we lost him. Why would this happen?

A:

First and foremost, let me send my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your pet. The answer to your question can be complicated. CPR is performed on pets but not the same why it is done in humans. It sounds like your pet was seriously ill and possibly went into heart failure. Dogs do not have heart attacks like people do. Dogs tend to have valvular problems or arrhythmias (a conduction disturbance within the heart). Unfortunately, CPR attempts on dogs and cats have about a 10% or even less success rate. I’m sure your veterinarian and his/her staff did all they could to bring your dog back. 50

I have a neighbor who keeps his dog out in the yard most of the time. I worry about this dog as the winter is arriving. Could you give some advice so I can relay this to him.

All pets should be inside when the weather is bad, such as the rain, ice or snow. Dogs, just like people can get hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when the body can no longer maintain its core temperature. Warm blooded animals, such as humans, dogs and cats, can usually maintain their body temperature through a process called thermoregulation. This means that if the outside temperature is warm at 95 degrees or cold at below freezing, a warm blooded animal will maintain its normal body temperature. Any animal that is left outside in the cold is subject to hypothermia, especially those that have no shelter to go into. This process becomes a larger problem if the dog gets wet, say from the falling snow. Some dogs are at greater risk for hypothermia. Young puppies and senior dogs are at higher risk. Dogs that are very thin with little body fat are subject to hypothermia if left out in the cold too long. Dogs that are ill, say with cardiac disease, respiratory disease or an endocrine disease, such as hypothyroidism, are more susceptible. The normal body temperature for a dog is 100 to 102.5 degrees. A temperature below 99 degrees is considered hypothermia; a temperature below 82 degrees is considered very severe hypothermia. The treatment for hypothermia includes warming up the pet. This should be done under the supervision of a veterinarian who can administer warmed IV electrolytes. The easiest way to avoid hypothermia is to keep your dog inside and out of the cold, snow and ice except to go outside to urinate and defecate. If a dog or cat is left out in the frigid weather too long and becomes hypothermic, their organs can start to shut down. If you are at all unsure if your pet is hypothermic it is best to get him to a veterinarian to be assessed and treated accordingly.
