words from the editors:
I am actually feeling blindsided. Where did the summer go? Kids went back to school; Labor Day came and went and summer is officially over. It doesn’t have to be over, at least not yet. I’m sure we will have some beautiful summer-like days through Septemberand Octber assuming that the weather patterns follows the norm with an Indian Summer like we usually have in the Delaware Valley. But wait, there is no norm anymore. We could expect just about anything moving into the fall season. The weather has been so erratic lately that I don’t think anything is certain any more. Scientists attribute the unpredictable weather patterns to climate change, and for those who don’t believe in the scientific evidence, Wake Up and look out your window. Do you think that the damage is done? Are we too late? IF we make the suggested changes can we reverse the trends? Kudos to Delaware for being recognized as the first no kill state! Read about it in this issue and check out some of the cats and dogs, like Archibald (below) that were saved and many are still available for adoption at the Brandywine Valley SPCA. Sprinkling dust in the stratosphere to reflect some of the sun’s rays away from Earth to prevent global warming. Science or science fiction?
S
ome certainly do consider it science fiction, or worry that it could end up doing more environmental harm than good. Yet others—including Bill Gates and a team of leading Harvard scientists—think it could be the solution to our planetary climate woes.
What we’re talking about is a form of geoengineering that entails sending up some 800 jumbo planes to sprinkle their payload of millions of tons of chalk dust in the stratosphere 12 miles above the Earth’s surface in an effort to reflect some of the sun’s heat back into space to turn the tide on climate change.
The so-called Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx) was developed by chemist James Anderson and physicist David Keith, both of Harvard— with funding from Bill Gates—“to advance understanding of stratospheric aerosols that could be relevant to solar geoengineering.” The researchers want to test their hypothesis with a $3 million experiment 12 miles above the Southwestern United States where they would steer remote controlled balloons to disperse small plumes of calcium carbonate.
observe any differences in the amount of solar radiation getting through. This system is adapted from a similar design the researchers used in groundbreaking research analyzing the composition of the stratospheric ozone layer.
But the test plan, initially slated for early 2019, has received some pushback from scientists and environmentalists, who worry that such tinkering could cause negative chain reactions and unforeseen irreversible consequences.
“Some researchers have suggested that solar geoengineering could alter precipitation patterns and even lead to more droughts in some regions,” reports Jeff Tollefson on Nature.com. “Others warn that one of the possible benefits of solar geoengineering— maintaining crop yields by protecting them from heat stress—might not come to pass.” He cites a 2018 study showing that yields of wheat, corn, rice and soy fell after two major volcanic eruptions darkened skies around the planet and took a toll on crop yields.
The balloons would then turn around and
Given such concerns, Anderson and Keith are erring on the side of caution, setting up an external advisory committee to review the project and point out potential safety concerns to head off negative side effects.

“Getting it done right is far more important than getting it done quickly,” says Peter Frumhoff of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
If they can pull off a successful test and then scale the idea, the good news is it might even be something the governments of the world—and/or some rich benefactors—can afford. An October 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that dispersing enough sulfur in the stratosphere with a similar (cooling) intent could be done for less than $10 billion/year— and possibly for as little as $1 billion/year. While that might seem like a lot, it’s a bargain if it can save our environment, our civilization, and our very existence on the planet.

Mayo Clinic discovers biological markers that could guide treatment for prostate cancer By Susan Buckles Mayo Clinic News Network Genetic alterations in low-risk prostate cancer diagnosed by needle biopsy can identify men that harbor higher-risk cancer in their prostate glands, Mayo Clinic has discovered. The research, which is published in the January edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, found for the first time that genetic alterations associated with intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer also may be present in some cases of low-risk prostate cancers. The study found the needle biopsy procedure may miss higher-risk cancer that increases the risk of disease progression. Researchers say that men diagnosed with low-risk cancer may benefit from additional testing for these chromosomal alterations. “We have discovered new molecular markers that can help guide men in their decisions about the course of their prostate cancer care,” says George Vasmatzis, Ph.D., co-director of the Center for Individualized Medicine Biomarker Discovery Program and lead author on the study. “Overtreatment has been issue for the group of men that our study targets. We found that the presence of genetic alterations in low-risk cancer can help men decide whether treatment or active surveillance is right for them.” Prostate cancer is assessed by Gleason patterns and score that indicate grade. The Gleason patterns are strongly associated with risk of disease progression. Gleason pattern 3 prostate cancer is considered to be lowrisk. Gleason patterns 4 and 5 cancer carry a higher risk of aggressive behavior. 8
Men whose tumor is composed entirely of Gleason pattern 3 may choose active surveillance. They are monitored closely with blood tests and needle biopsies, as necessary. Or they may be referred to treatment, such as surgery and radiation, particularly if they have Gleason pattern 4 or 5. Men with a low-risk cancer sometimes choose surgery because they don’t want to risk disease progression. The study found that men who do not have these alterations in their cancers have a low risk of harboring aggressive disease. These men may feel more comfortable choosing active surveillance. Alternatively, if a man’s low-risk tumor shows these alterations, they have a higher risk that their cancer may progress. They may consider treatment, including surgery. The research Researchers performed DNA sequencing with a high-tech genomic tool known as mate-pair sequencing. This research was performed on specific Gleason patterns from frozen cancer specimens from 126 men who had their prostate glands removed. They found five genes are more frequently altered in Gleason patterns 4 and 5. These alterations were found more commonly in Gleason pattern 3 associated with higher Gleason patterns and not when Gleason pattern 3 was found alone. “The needle biopsy procedure samples only a small portion of the tumor. It is not uncommon that a man with a Gleason pattern 3 on needle biopsy specimen harbors a higher-grade cancer next to the pattern 3 that was missed by the procedure,” says John Cheville, M.D., co-director of the Center for Individualized Medicine Biomarker Discovery Program and co-author of the study. “Therefore, if we identify these alterations in a Gleason pattern 3, there is a higher likelihood that Gleason pattern 4 is nearby.” Researchers took the genetic information generated using mate pair sequencing and converted it into a test called "fluorescence in situ hybridization" (FISH) that validated the genetic alterations in clinical samples. The FISH test is available for Mayo patients.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman
The Service Trap
That energy can affect the receivers as well. The unspoken but active emotional vibrations of resentment and exhaustion can reinforce, within the receivers, subtle feelings of unworthiness as they sense that having their needs met is an inconvenience to others.
Suzanne Eder
Over the years I’ve worked with many clients who are in career transition, or who are retiring from their careers and want to create a fulfilling next chapter in their lives. Not surprisingly, I tend to attract people on a spiritual path who want to deepen their understanding of creation and manifestation from the perspective of Spirit. They want to learn more about how Spirit - the vast, infinitely loving, intelligent and powerful aspect of who we are that exists in nonphysical realms - is expressed physically through the lens of our individual and collective human consciousness. More often than not, when these beautiful, spiritual people come to me during a career transition, they seek to find paid or volunteer work through which they can be of service in the world. When that intention arises from an awareness of who they really are, it’s a recognition of the joy that Spirit wants to experience through them, as them. It reflects delight in sharing their gifts with others. Yet a similarly stated intention can arise from a totally different place. It can arise from guilt, which reflects a misunderstanding of who they – and others - really are, and that guilt spawns an obligation to serve. Giving from obligation is a contradiction of terms and, more fundamentally, a contradiction of energy. The energy of giving, which is at the heart of true service, is lifeenhancing Source energy expressing its fullness, its creativity and its generosity. The energy of guilt is a depressive, heavy energy which can be only be activated when we aren’t in harmony with who we really are.
This is one of the many reasons why I believe it’s important that we understand the implications – and creative power - of our vibrational nature. When we view ourselves as purely physical beings in a physical universe, we rely solely on physical action to accomplish results. But the effects can only be temporary until we understand that consciousness is the primary driver of all physical effects. And our consciousness reflects our awareness – or relative lack thereof – of who we really are. Here is an example of how a lack of awareness of who we really are might play out in the arena of service, in this case the giving and receiving between two people: Let’s say I am unaware of myself as an extension of Source and therefore believe I am unworthy. The vibration of that belief will not be in harmony with the ideas, opportunities and natural support that would otherwise reflect my worthiness. On a physical level I may have unmet needs. If you, too, are unaware of yourself - and others - as extensions of Source, yet your physical needs are met, you may start believing in something as capricious as luck. Unaware of your own worthiness, you could feel guilty about your seemingly random good fortune and give to me out of a sense of obligation.
Providing service out of guilt-induced obligation often results in feelings of exhaustion and resentment in the providers, yet they keep pushing themselves to give out of that same sense of obligation.
If you continued giving from that place, you would tire yourself because you’re disconnected from your true Source of energy and inspiration. If I continued receiving from that place, I would remain disconnected from my own Source of energy and inspiration through my ongoing false belief in unworthiness.
What they don’t fully realize is that their feelings of resentment and exhaustion may not be real from a physical perspective, but they are nonetheless very real from an energetic perspective. And the energy of those feelings diminishes their health and vitality.
The immediate giving and receiving of physical support would of course be needed, welcomed and appreciated, but if it doesn’t also stimulate a shift in self-awareness and self-belief, the vibrational patterns of our

thought will predispose us to a continuation of the cycle. We will remain trapped in an unfulfilling dynamic.
Source who each have unique attributes of Source to share with each other.
It’s a dynamic that can only be shifted as more and more of us awaken to the truth of who we – all of us – really are. And that truth is alive and well in our hearts.
That kind of reorientation doesn’t happen overnight. And in the transition, of course, many of us have some degree of misunderstanding about who we really are, which means many of us experience feelings and circumstances of unworthiness and lack, or of unworthiness and guilt, or any number of unwanted feelings and conditions arising from a consciousness of separation.
Our hearts know that true service arises from love and is given in love, not from any false need to prove our “goodness” (and therefore ease our guilt). Our goodness, our worthiness, is an absolute given. It doesn’t need to be proven because it can’t be proven. It simply IS. And this is the astounding truth we have the sacred and joyful opportunity to awaken within us.
These misunderstandings mean that many of us have the experience of unmet needs, and we can absolutely support each other through our mutual giving and receiving of things at the physical level.
The heart also knows that people we might currently perceive as needing to be served are, themselves, glorious expressions of the Divine. Our greatest gift to them, or to anyone, is to see them for who they really are – to help them wake up to their own magnificence and power.
Yet if we limit our giving to the visible requirements of our physical world, we remain trapped in a dynamic that perpetuates the very conditions we want to change. It’s like moving pieces around on a game board until someone is declared the winner and another, the loser.
And we can only do that by being awake to our own. That’s why I love the Howard Thurman quote I featured at the start of this article. Although he wasn’t speaking in the language of energy and vibration, he clearly understood that people who have come alive naturally and powerfully uplift everyone they meet and, in truth, the whole of human consciousness.
What we need is a whole new game, one in which there isn’t a board with finite edges but an infinitely expanding playing field that allows everyone to thrive.
I often use the phrase, “feeding into the grid” to express this. The more peaceful, loving, joyful and empowered any one of us is, the stronger those qualities are in the entire vibrational grid of human consciousness - which means everyone else has easier access to them. Bringing this back to people who are in career transition or are, in a more general sense, desiring to be of service in the world, the first thing I want to say is that their aliveness – their joyful connection with the truth of who they are – is innately of service to the world. Their very Presence is uplifting in ways that catalyze awakening in others because of humanity’s vibrational connectedness. And next I want to say that, by Divine design, what they genuinely want to create and share is what is naturally of most benefit to others. Another of humankind’s most brilliant, heart-centered minds said it this way:
We expand our playing field by letting ourselves be drawn by the stronger pull of that which we truly love, as Rumi so wisely counsels us to do, because the energy of love is the most expansive and generous of all. So let’s be drawn by love, not pushed by guilt. Let’s see others who can benefit from what we have to give not as unfortunate, but as the unique expressions of Source they are, open to receive what we are genuinely willing to give and knowing that they, too, have much to give others. And let’s remember with Howard Thurman that our aliveness – our full allowance of the Source which enlivens everything in our physical experience to flow through us – is what our world truly needs.
“Everyone has been made for some particular work, and the desire for that work has been put in every heart.” - Rumi Rumi also said, in the piercingly direct and elegant way of his,
Let yourself be drawn by the stronger pull of that which you truly love.” I fully realize, of course, that the path of translating our heart’s call into activities that are meaningful, joyful and expressible in our physical reality isn’t a straight line with predictable steps and outcomes. It’s a complete reorientation from a perspective that sees us as needy individuals who are separated from Source and from each other, to one that understands ourselves as magnificent, individuated expressions of www.livingwellmagazine.net

Delaware Recognized as First No-Kill State for Shelter Animals Best Friends Animal Society announced at its annual conference that Delaware has the distinction of becoming the first “no-kill” state in the country. The recognition resulted from a national initiative called No-kill 2025, which aims to help the entire country achieve no-kill by the year 2025.
All of the shelters and rescues have contributed to this achievement, which has gotten national recognition in media outlets across the country. As the largest shelter in the state, the BVSPCA contributions to help achieve no-kill include: • Progressive adoption practices such as implementing open adoptions and holding “mega” adoption events in which most of the state’s shelters participate • A nationally recognized return to field program for cats with limited adoption options otherwise
No-kill 2025 gathers data from a range of sources to compare communities and states using standardized methodologies. An online tool allows a view into lifesaving down to the individual community level. (Reference: bestfriends.org/2025-goal)
• A behavior program to help dogs needing a little more support
This prestigious milestone for Delaware has resulted from hard work by all of the state’s shelters and rescues, legislators who advocate for animals, state leadership, and especially the community supporting progressive policies and engaging in important activities like adoption and fostering. Delaware’s private, limited admission shelters have consistently operated at no-kill levels for some time. The challenge has been the contracted service provider operating an open admission shelter with live release rates that pulled down the overall state performance.
• Programs that focus on keeping pets out of shelters and with families that love them, such as low-cost veterinary clinics, free shot clinic days, mobile wellness services, and a pet food pantry
Several steps pushed the live release rate over 90% starting in 2016. A big influence was consolidating animal control for dogs and humane law enforcement at the state level under the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare to ensure all communities have coverage rather than relying on individual townships or counties and implementing a state-wide provider for the associated animal services. The Brandywine Valley SPCA took that animal services role starting in late 2015 with a five-year contract with the Office of Animal Welfare. The BVSPCA has invested more than $5 million from private donations and grants to build a supportive infrastructure, including shelters and low-cost veterinary clinics in New Castle County, Sussex County and in a few months also Kent County. That infrastructure supports more than 60% of the state’s shelter intakes. In total, the BVSPCA has a live release rate of 95% for the more than 14,000 animals in its care each year.
14
• Humane education programs to raise awareness and teach compassion among young people
Having Delaware recognized with this honor doesn’t mean the work is done. Achieving “no-kill” means at least 90% of animals in a shelter (or in this case the collective shelters in Delaware) have a positive outcome. It is widely recognized that there will always be a small portion of animals entering a shelter that are medically untreatable and suffering or are considered a risk to the community. The key to continued progress is helping animals on the fringe of adoptability, continuing to implement progressive programs in the community, and ongoing work to find solutions to lifesaving for cats. The BVSPCA, for instance, opened the Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown to specifically focus on animals needing assistance for adoption, such as behavior and training for dogs, support for medical cases and infants, and victims of disasters. The organization implements community TNR programs and have new owned cat programs about to roll out. Being the first no-kill state is national recognition for which everyone involved should be proud – the hard working shelters and rescues, the legislators advocating for change for the animals, the Office of Animal Welfare, and especially everyone in the community who stands up for the animals and participates in saving the animal lives depending on us all to work together on their behalf.

KEEP MOVING: How to Stay Motivated to Exercise Erin Taylor
Finding motivation to exercise is often a lot harder than the workout itself. But as Dr. Scott Rosenthal illustrated in his tongue-in-cheek article on why you shouldn’t bother exercising, sticking to a regular workout routine is essential to a long, healthy, and happy life. So how do you stay motivated on days when you just want to skip your routine?
With these simple tips!

Start a journal
A bullet journal is the perfect companion for the health-conscious, and Very Well Fit details its many uses for monitoring your overall wellness. You can start by writing your fitness goals down, whether it's something general like "get fit" or more specific like "lose 10 pounds" or "bench press 50 kilograms." This can serve as a reminder of why you started a program in the first place. You can also jot down your personal experiences, frustrations, and victories, which are all part of the journey. Use this to track your diet, reps, and your overall progress.
Play the right tunes
Finding the right music to go along with pounding pavement or pumping iron is a huge help — and it's backed by science, too. Researchers from Brunel University London found that music increases enjoyment of physical activity by 28%, compared to when you don't have any auditory stimuli. Listening to a podcast can also do the trick, but it only boosts enjoyment by around 15%. This means that listening to music can create positive associations with working out!
Find cute exercise outfits
Sometimes, finding a cute outfit is all it takes to get hyped for a workout. Why not try putting together an ensemble that you’re excited to wear and walk around in at the gym? But don't rely on aesthetics alone, because you need to prioritize comfort, too, for a good experience. Pretty Me warns against wearing garments made of cotton, especially if you're the sweaty type and you're doing something more challenging, like HIIT. Cotton clothing will get soaked, heavy, and more uncomfortable as you attempt a workout. Check for fabrics that are moisture-wicking, stretchy, and can provide enough coverage, especially if you’re jumping around a lot!
Try new activities
One of the main reasons you might be losing interest in exercise is that your routine is too monotonous. It's important to introduce variety into your program and challenge yourself with new types of activities. After all, there's always something new to try at a local gym or fitness studio, like adult ballet, yoga, or rock climbing. This is also critical for overcoming a fitness plateau.
Work out with others
Working out with a trainer, a partner, or a group is one of the simplest ways to make exercise more enjoyable. NBC News reports that 95% of people who work out with friends complete their program, which just goes to show that there's a bigger likelihood for success when you get help from other people. They can provide external motivation when you just feel like giving up. It also makes you more accountable to show up to the gym when there are other people waiting for you. Whether you rely on other people, a journal, devices, or yourself, the important thing is you're finding ways to keep yourself motivated. Once you get into the habit of exercising, psyching yourself up to work out will be much easier, and the results much more rewarding.

HOW TO TRAVEL SMARTER by Travel & Lifestyle Expert Linda Cooper
One could definitely say I’m a professional traveler as the Host and Executive Producer of my television show, “Travel Time with Linda”. In fact, when filming our Season One episodes I featured 12 “Caribbean Dreaming” Islands in a matter of six months and my husband used to joke he needed to go on vacay to see me. When it came time to film Season Two featuring “BucketList Destinations”, I learned how to pace myself because being on permanent vacation is HARD. Over the past few years of racking up over a million frequent flyer miles I’ve learned how to travel smarter. I can navigate confidently around an over-crowded airplane with a hocking, coughing passenger without getting sick. I learned how to not break a nail (or multiple) packing, unpacking and schlepping my luggage through multiple continents, and perhaps the most important of all; knowing WHAT TO PACK when your gone every other month for 2 weeks at a time. Packing the essentials is a mandatory requirement and I’m not just talking toothpaste. I’m talking key glamour essentials, to go from drab to fab in 60 seconds and turn a bad hair day into that ‘New me, who is this?!’ mood.

MAGNETIC APPEAL I used to wear lash extensions for that “on-camera glam look” when filming on location. It was a whole process, getting them applied right before I left the country and the minute I returned, I would have them removed immediately because they were so irritating, I was ready to tear my eyes out. Then I discovered MOXIE LASH magnetic lashes and can I just say, this has been a GAME CHANGER for me! A genius product line with “magnetic appeal”, forget about eyelash extensions, applying messy glue to drag-queen lash strips or those awful "double lash sandwich" hard to use outdated magnetic lashes. These reusable magnetic lashes get up to 30 all-day wears with one pair. Just apply Moxie Lash's magnetic eyeliner which not only adds drama to the eye, it locks your magnetic lashes in place in seconds and “Voila”- Instant Glam! No mess, no stress, no damage to your real lashes. Check them out for yourself at www.moxielash.com and get 15% with the promo code LCOOPER.
MVP JEWELRY ACCESSORY When packing jewelry options, I always look for pieces that “play well with others” and resin jewelry is on the rise not to mention it’s light-as-a-feather making an ideal “travel companion”. My MVP fashion accessory award goes to Sterling Forever with its fun styles in a variety of colors and so durable. On my recent trip to Thailand I had three pairs on rotation that literally went with 80% of my wardrobe. Visit www.SterlingForever.com

INFLIGHT MUST-HAVE We’ve all been there. You’re stuck on a flight with an inconsolable baby two rows behind you and there’s no way to escape. After 20 excruciating minutes of non-stop screaming you share a much- appreciated tip with the desperate parent using supplies you can find on the plane. Take two Styrofoam cups they use for coffee, stuff a cocktail napkin at the bottom of the cup and add a bit of hot water to mold the soggy napkin to the bottom of the cup, hold over child’s ears and pray. This technique works 80% of the time, in fact, one flight I became an instant hero with impromptu applause by nearby grateful passengers when the sobs instantly subsided. Another flight using the same technique, I was rewarded with a round of drinks from the flight attendants. For the 20% of the time it doesn’t work, then it’s always great to have these handy;
The AcousticSheep SleepPhones headband. So comfortable to wear and takes up no room to pack, these noise-cancelling headphones are built into a headband allowing you to enjoy the music of your choice from your Bluetooth device without disturbing or being disturbed by the person (or baby) next to you. These innovative headphones feature ultra-thin, high-quality speakers tucked inside a lightweight, machine washable headband. You can also use SleepPhones to help with insomnia, block out a partner snoring, or enjoy music while lying on your side and can also double as an eye mask. www.sleepphones.com As for plane travel tips how to avoid getting sick from the passenger coughing up a storm inflight? If you can’t move seats (first option) then always travel with hand sanitizer and use every opportunity prior to touching your face and eating. In addition, always keep a sweater or wrap with you at all times that you can drape the sleeves “mask-like” over your mouth and nostrils and double down on EmergenC packets.

Mindful Musings on Perfectionism Karen Verna Carlson
“What if life were perfect? “What if you lived in a perfect world of perfect people and perfect possessions, with everyone and everything doing the perfect thing at the perfect time? “What if you had everything you wanted, and only what you wanted, exactly as you wanted, precisely when you wanted it? “What if, after luxuriating in this perfect world for the perfect length of time, you started feeling uneasy about the predictability of perfection? “What if, after a perfect length of additional time, you began thinking, ‘There seems to be a lack of risk, adventure and fun in perfection. Having it my way all the time is starting to get dull.’ ”What if, at this point in your perfect world, you noticed for the first time a button marked, ‘Surprise.’ “What if you walked over, considered all that might be contained in the concept of ‘surprise,’ decided ‘Anything’s better than perfect boredom,’ took a deep breath, pushed the button… “…and found yourself where you are right now—feeling what your feeling right now, thinking what you’re thinking right now, with everything in your life precisely the way it is now—reading this….” That’s page “i” of text headlined PRELUDE even before the publisher’s data and title page of LIFE 101 (Everything We Wish We Had Learned about Life in School—But Didn’t) by John-Roger and Peter McWilliams (Prelude Press, L.A., 1991). Find Your Joyful Center Reading this dislodged me from frozen shock after epiphany-level recognition recently that I am a chronic perfectionist and that my perfectionism is not only unhealthy, but also life negating rather than life affirming; that it is based on fear of abandonment, and has been a deeply rooted subliminal toxic driving force all my life due to infant and childhood traumas. Now, I’m ready to begin dancing through the process of rationally dismantling this faulty paradigm, as I launch my fourth quarter century. While perfectionism can be an admirable aspiration, it can also be suffocatingly inhibitive. To help you find your joyful center on that continuum, here are some ideas to consider.

Drop the Heavy Shield A rich resource to explore this topic is The Gifts of Imperfection, Your Guide to a Wholehearted Life by Brené Brown, Ph.D., L.M.S.W. “Shame is the birthplace of perfectionism,” writes Brown, which “… is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame…. Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing really preventing us from taking flight.” Mindfulness Helps To overcome perfectionism Brown refers to Dr. Kristin Neff ’s formula of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, available on www.self-compassion.org. As with mind training or meditation in general, this element of mindfulness, states Brown, “… reminds us that mindfulness means not over-identifying with or exaggerating our feelings.” Surrender the Halo Amy Dean in Night Light…Meditations (Hazelden Foundation, Center City, MN, 1986) comments, “Perfection places an incredible demand upon us to do everything right. But what is right? [Is there only one right way to do something?]…The perfectionist in us is always looking for right, but we’ll never find it….If we choose to try wearing the halo of perfection, we need to know it can be tarnished, tipped to the side, or misplaced every once in a while.” She quotes Christopher Fry: “What, after all, is a halo? It’s only one more thing to keep clean.” [November 16] Sometimes We Experience Perfection “Perfection means being perfect—no faults or blemishes. Sometimes we see perfection by a gymnast who scores a perfect 10. Yet every time that gymnast performs, she doesn’t always score a ten. She is not perfect all the time, or even most of the time. “Wecan experience momentary perfection. Perhaps we earn an ‘A’ or write a faultless business proposal or complete a craft project without a dropped stitch. But these accomplishments don’t mean we will always be perfect. We need to see ourselves as imperfect and allow the dropped stitches, the ‘Bs,’ and the 9.5 scores to exist. They let us see we are perfect in a special way—we are perfectly imperfect human beings! [May 20]
“Yet we’re all struggling in front of one another. Just as others see our imperfections, so do we see theirs. None of us are virtuosos in life. To become skilled in living, we need to live one day at a time and learn as we go.” [December 27] Perfectionism Fuels Procrastination Josh Billings remarked, “If a [hu]man should happen to reach perfection in this world, he would have to die immediately to enjoy himself.” Anne Wilson Schaef in Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much (Harper Collins, NY, 1990) reflects, “Perfectionism is a difficult and impossible task master. Also, perfectionism is a way of defining a task and ourselves from outside and may have nothing to do with what the task really is or who we really are. “In fact, we may use perfectionism to keep ourselves from getting anything done. If it has to be done perfectly, why even start? Perfectionism and procrastination go hand in hand, and accomplish nothing. Honor the Inner Process “We need to remember that we are doing the task at hand and therefore what we have to bring to the task is ourselves, our accumulated knowledge and experience, and our creativity. Who could ask for anything more?” [Alternate Meditation 3] In her November 25 meditation Schaef quotes advice from author Jesse Barnard to her daughter, “Don’t try to be such a perfect girl, darling. Do the best you can without too much anxiety or strain.” Schaef comments, “We forget that when push comes to shove the only standard of perfection we have to meet is to be perfectly ourselves. Whenever we set up abstract, external standards and try to force ourselves to meet them, we destroy ourselves.” Refrain from Self-Abuse Schaef ’s February 27 entry states, “Perfectionism is self-abuse of the highest order….In trying to be the abstract perfect, we batter, judge, and distort ourselves. No matter what we do or how we try to achieve, it is never enough. We are never enough. Trying too hard and never trying at all are two sides of the coin of perfection. Unfortunately, it is a coin that never pays off.” Appreciate the Big, Lovely Picture
We All Practice in Front of One Another “The violin virtuoso whose concerts are sold-out has spent innumerable hours of practice to achieve such fame. That person wouldn’t think of inviting the public to a practice session because of the flaws they might hear. “We aren’t virtuosos, yet we’re always on view to the public. Everyone gets to see our good performances as well as our bad. Because of this, we may often struggle with impatience and disappointment in our striving to ‘look good’ in front of others.
Earnie Larsen and Carol Hegarty in Believing in Myself (Simon & Schuster, NY, 1991) quote Winston Churchill: “The maxim ‘Nothing avails but perfection,’ may be spelled paralysis.” They encourage us, “…. By all means, take whatever action you can against a troubling flaw. Many have lifted a sagging self esteem by getting their bodies in shape or getting counseling to tame a negative emotional impulse. But it is always a mistake to hinge our self-esteem on the few clumsy brushstrokes in an otherwise lovely portrait.” [May 12]

Foster High, Reasonable Expectations
Strive for Balance
They remind us Alexander Pope wrote a couple hundred years’ ago, “Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see,/Thinks what ne’er was, nor is, nor shall be,” elaborating, “Setting a high standard and holding yourself to it is certainly admirable behavior. No one who shoots too low accomplishes very much. But there is a big difference between striving for a high standard and expecting yourself to achieve it every time out. No one can ‘always’ put out 110% effort; there are days we have only 80% to give. No one ‘never’ drops the ball or bungles an opportunity; even world class performers have their off days. And first place is only as sweet as it is because it’s not a permanent position— not for anyone. In life there is no such thing as a perfect score.
“Expecting ourselves to be perfect…puts us in a guilty and anxious state. Expecting others to be perfect is equally destructive; it makes others feel ashamed and may interfere with their growth. People are human and vulnerable, and that is wonderful. We can accept and cherish that idea. Expecting others to be perfect puts us in that…state of moral superiority. Expecting ourselves to be perfect makes us feel rigid and inferior. We can let go of both ideas. We do not need to go to the other extreme, tolerating anything people throw our way. We can still expect appropriate, responsible behavior from ourselves…. And when we stop expecting others to be perfect, we may discover that they’re doing much better than we thought. When we stop expecting ourselves to be perfect, we’ll discover the beauty in ourselves….We can strive for that balance between expecting too much and expecting too little from others and myself.” [April 14]
“Impossible demands on self make self-esteem impossible, too. If our approval is won only by superhuman feats, we won’t have much to cheer about. How much healthier and happier we will be when we eliminate words like always and never from our inner code of conduct. We need to hear more applause.” [February 27] Delacroix maintained, “The artist who aims at perfection in everything achieves it in nothing.” Perfectionism Focuses on Mistakes In The Language of Letting Go (Hazelden Foundation, Center City, MN, 1990), Melody Beattie comments, “….We do a terrible, annoying thing to ourselves and others when we expect perfection…. Sometimes, expecting perfection makes people so uptight that they and we make more mistakes than normal because we are so nervous and focused on mistakes. Maintain Healthy Boundaries “That does not mean we allow inappropriate behaviors with the excuse that ‘nobody’s perfect.’ That doesn’t mean we don’t have boundaries and reasonable expectations of people and ourselves…. Expecting perfection is not reasonable….Striving for excellence, purity in creativity, a harmonious performance, and the best we have to offer does not happen in the stymied, fear-producing atmosphere of expecting perfection.
St. Augustine declared, “This is the very perfection of a [hu]man, to find out his own imperfections.” Feel Happier and Be More Productive LIFE 101 quotes Dr. David M. Burns: “Aim for success, not for perfection. Never give up the right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make you a far happier and more productive person.” What are your thoughts, observations and experiences about perfectionism? What small, relatively easy actions can you take to lighten up? Which one are you willing to implement and consistently sustain? How can you foster accountability for this process? When will you begin? WARNING: Disregard all of the above in favor of impeccably faultless behavior realistically fear-based when climbing ladders and mountains, dealing with wild animals, gangsters, law enforcement agents, medical emergencies, tax authorities, courts, U.S. Customs, etc. Blessings on your journey.
Love, Accept, Nurture Uniqueness “Sometimes, the flaws and imperfections in ourselves determine our uniqueness, the way they do in a piece of art. Relish them. Laugh at them. Embrace them, and ourselves. Encourage others and ourselves to do the best we can. Love and nurture ourselves and others for being who we are….creating a healthy atmosphere of love, acceptance, and nurturing around and within us. [August 10] “Much pain comes from trying to be perfect. Perfection is impossible unless we think of it in a new way: Perfection is being who and where we are today; it’s accepting and loving ourselves just as we are. We are each right where we need to be. [May 11]

The Future Is Hybrid! Sean Strauss
After using the Volcano Hybrid, I can say that there is no better way in this world to vaporize herbal remedies. A stunning example of German engineering, that raises the bar that Storz & Bickel set 19 years ago with the release of the OG Volcano. Storz & Bickel filed a patent in 1999 for a detachable balloon that would fill with vapor and provide a unique method of inhaling plant-based materials. My journey with Storz & Bickel started several years ago when I was diagnosed with heart failure and was looking for a cleaner way to consume plant materials. There was really only one option, digital or analog. The Volcano was the vape to get, I just needed to choose between digital or OG analog. I went digital. Essentially the Volcano is a hot air generator that pushes heated air through plant materials that is then captured by a balloon that you are able to inhale vapor. Nothing is being burned in this process. The plant material is being cooked and released as vapor which is pleasant to inhale compared to actual smoke.
32
The Volcano has remained the top contender in the vape industry since its first release in 2000. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better. In 2019 Storz & Bickel introduced the Volcano Hybrid. Storz & Bickel gathered the best and most intuitive pieces of all of their other high-performance vaporizers to create a new level of vaping, the Volcano Hybrid. From simple features like being able to snap the filling chamber onto the top of the vape, to major performance increases, like heating up in around 40 seconds The Hybrid introduces a new way to consume your favorite plant material in the form of a tube with a mouthpiece that can allow a user to have a continuous vaping experience. The bag is the classic way of doing things and it is just as fun to use as ever. The vapor emitted using either method is very flavorful and can be as vapor intense as you want it. I found my vapor sweet spot around 340 degrees Fahrenheit, but it will vary from user to user and what kind of plant material you choose to use. The Volcano Hybrid enhancements and refinements make this vape feel almost futuristic. This is the vaporizer to own. It is a premium vape for a premium price and is above all the best desktop vaporizer on the market. If you are the owner of earlier iterations of the Volcano, you too will experience the benefits of using the Volcano Hybrid. App integration allows for further control and even allows for automation of use. Start saving those pennies people!

Rambutan is a sweet tropical fruit with an appearance ranging from “scary” to “intriguing”, depending on who is describing it. “While we certainly don’t want to incite fear, the goal is to get people out of their comfort zone and try these strange-looking fruits,” jokes Melissa Hartmann de Barros, HLB Specialties’ Director of Communications. Rambutans are similar to lychee in appearance and flavor, with white pulp and a large nutty (inedible) seed. Fresh rambutan has a bright leathery exterior with soft red spikes, which is why some lovingly compare them to sea urchins. HLB imports them from Guatemala and Honduras.

Rambutan has an incredible taste: it’s sweet and refreshing with a flavor reminiscent of peeled grape, especially when eaten chilled. Even though they are sweet, rambutans only have around 10 calories per fruit. They are also very convenient to carry along as a snack, especially because they are so easy to peel and eat. Just hold the fruit with both hands and twist apart at the seam or cut lengthwise, pop the whole fruit in your mouth, and eat like a cherry. Make sure to discard the skin and pit. Before 2016, rambutans were virtually unknown outside of Asian stores. Then HLB Specialties introduced their exclusive 12oz rambutan clamshell

and very quickly the fruit gained on immense popularity, largely due to its convenient presentation, ease of handling, and sweet taste. The HLB packaging label was also a big catalyst for growth. It includes eating instructions and a playful cartoon character, which makes the fruit more appealing, especially for those hesitant to try. Social media has amplified rambutan’s acceptance and demand. In mid-2018, the hashtag #rambutan had close to 200,000 mentions worldwide on Instagram alone, which was an increase of 48,000 posts over 2017. In May of this year, there were 223,000 tags and in August it’s already over 231,000 mentions. There are also several videos on YouTube showing vloggers share their experience with rambutan, such as here. Shoppers can find HLB rambutan in the Midwest and East Coast in Wal Mart stores, Meijer, Whole Foods, Freshfields Farms, and from August 22 to September 14, 2019 at select Trader Joe’s locations.
