Cancer-Sniffing Dogs 97% Accurate in Identifying Lung Cancer, According to a study in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association

Researchers Say Dogs May Help Develop Over-the-Counter Test Capable of Earlier Detection Three beagles successfully showed they are capable of identifying lung cancer by scent, a first step in identifying specific biomarkers for the disease. Researchers say the dogs’ abilities may lead to development of effective, safe and inexpensive means for mass cancer screening. After eight weeks of training, the beagles chosen for their superior olfactory receptor genes—were able to distinguish between blood serum samples taken from patients with malignant lung cancer and healthy controls with 97% accuracy. The double-blind study is published in the July edition of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. “We’re using the dogs to sort through the layers of scent until we identify the tell-tale biomarkers,” says Thomas Quinn, DO, professor at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and lead author on this study. “There is still a great deal of work ahead, but we’re making good progress.” The dogs were led into a room with blood serum samples at nose level. Some samples came from patients with non-small cell lung cancer; others were drawn from healthy controls. After thoroughly sniffing a sample, the dogs sat down to indicate a positive finding for cancer or moved on if none was detected. Dr. Quinn and his team are nearing completion of a second iteration of the study. This time the dogs are working to identify lung, breast and colorectal cancer using samples of patients’ breath, collected by the patient breathing into a face mask. Researchers say findings suggest the dogs are as effective detecting cancer using this method.

The next step will be to further fractionate the samples based on chemical and physical properties, presenting them back to the dogs until the specific biomarkers for each cancer are identified. The goal is to develop an over-the-counter screening product, similar to a pregnancy test, in terms of cost, simplicity and availability. Dr. Quinn envisions a device that someone can breathe into and see a color change to indicate a positive or negative finding. Early detection key Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide for both women and men, and more than 200,000 people annually in the United States receive a diagnosis of lung cancer. The five-year survival rate for stage IA non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is 92%. That drops to 13% in stage IIIC NSCLC, and after metastasis, the five-year survival rates range from 10% to less than 1%, depending on the stage. Additionally, screening and imaging for lung cancer is costly and not always reliable. Chest X-rays have a high false-negative rate, while CT scans with computer-aided diagnosis have a high false-positive rate. Previous studies indicated that 90% of missed lung cancers occur when using chest X-rays, and CT scans have difficulty identifying small, central, juxtavascular lung cancers. Dr. Quinn believes his research can lead to better screening and diagnosis solutions, potentially creating a change in cancer detection. “Right now it appears dogs have a better natural ability to screen for cancer than our most advanced technology,” says Dr. Quinn. “Once we figure out what they know and how, we may be able to catch up.” Source: The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association

a pillow bed, will keep your pet comfortable. Animals do not sweat the same way we sweat; they do not have evaporative cooling as humans do! Animals can only pant to get rid of excess heat through their tongues or sweat through their paw pads. They can overheat and collapse in temperatures we think are just starting to get unbearable, especially the bigger breeds and older animals.

SAFETY FOR PETS Caroline M. Wieczorek, VMD

SUN PROTECTION:

WALKS:

We protect ourselves from the harmful rays of the sun and should do the same for our pets. Animals can get sunburn, too! Apply small amount of pediatric SPF 30 to pale nose tips and bridges of noses, and ear tips. White animals, especially, are prone to melanomas on their ear (pinna tips) and eyelids when exposed to harsh summer sun for long periods of time. Animals that are coated and are shaved for the summer may need sun protection on their backs until their fur grows back, for at least a month or so.

PAW PROTECTION: If you aren’t comfortable walking on barefoot because of how hot they are, please don’t expect your pet to walk on them either. Decks, driveways, and sidewalks can become so hot they burn your when barefoot and the same applies to your pets. One simple solution is to place throw rugs and or runners (made for outdoors use and easily hosed off when they too become too hot) on any of these surfaces for your pet to have a comfortable walk to the grass for bathroom access. Another good option is to train your pet to wear booties for protection.

COOL OFF: Some dogs enjoy the water and placing a small kiddie wading pool in the yard filled with water will allow them to cool off while outside. However, do not leave them unattended! Be sure to dump the dirty water and change it daily to prevent mosquitos from using it as a breeding ground, or make an inexpensive chlorine dispenser by taking an old margarine container with lid, wash it thoroughly, punch a few holes in the bottom and put a chlorine tablet inside it and then float it inside the wading pool.

Don’t walk animals in the heat of the day, especially for long walks. This applies to high humidity times as well as poor air quality days. Try to take them for walks in the early morning hours and later in the evening at dusk. Don’t forget to wear reflective clothing and have a reflective leash if walking in poor lighting conditions. ON LAND AND SEA: If you plan on taking your dog boating with you, remember to take the sun screen for your pet too. Also, every member of the family should have their own floatation device. Even though everyone assumes dogs can swim, not all dogs can actually swim, and dogs can get tired and drown. Floatation devices are also a good idea for smaller dogs that run around in-ground swimming pools in case they slip and fall in.

HEAT EXHAUSTION: If you were to find your pet collapsed outside in the heat, place them in the bathtub and run cool (not cold water) on them. You can also put ice packs under their arm pits (axilla), groin areas, and cool towels on their heads and contact your veterinarian immediately. Never put your pet into ice water!

ENJOY: Summer is a fun time for all! If we use common sense then everyone stays safe and can enjoy the summer season. And don’t forget to use flea and tick control!

COMFORT: An animal that is left outside for any length of time should always have a clean drinking water source. Provide shade for your pet as well. Also, an area to lay on that is not directly on the hot ground, either a raised bed or

Mind Training Benefits Are Cumulative

Karen Verna Carlson

Spending daily time to calm mental activity is entry level mind training (a.k.a. mindfulness/present moment practice or meditation), beginning a journey that gradually gains momentum for greater and greater benefits. The past two years’ columns have been an orientation for the why’s and how’s of basic approaches to this extraordinary tool guaranteed to upgrade anyone’s quality of life (QoL). My mind is more than 30% calmer as I’ve more consistently performed daily 20-minute sessions simply counting breaths. The cumulative benefits can be so truly astonishing as to radically transform anyone’s QoL.

achieving results. However, those awareness practices have definitely enhanced my patience to let benefits show up in their own time. Similarly, your unique temperament and circumstances will manifest unique results with perfect relevance to your needs and desires. (Each of us truly is one of a kind, just like snowflakes.) My results may not interest you at all. They’re meaningful to me, just as yours will be meaningful to you. And all results will be cumulatively better and better for our collective consciousness.

Exponentially Cumulative Before I share some of my success stories, you’ll get more out of them if I start with an analogy to clarify this powerful cumulative aspect of consistent mind training. Think of being on a mountaintop and rolling a big, big snowball to release down a steep, smooth miles-long slope. With nothing to interfere with its descent, the snowball’s mass and velocity increase exponentially. So, the cumulative effects are such that when the ball is halfway down the mountain it may only be 20% its final size. The last few hundred feet could even double its size, and escalate its speed. Although this is a thought experiment, it’s mathematically verifiable. My calmer meditation-trained mind offered these Alpine snow memories from a 2-year Bavarian sojourn decades ago when I lived at the base of Germany’s 14,000-ft Zugspitze. I didn’t roll any snowballs down it then, but it’s refreshing to be thinking about snow games in July.

In the realm of mind training (or meditation or present moment awareness practice), our 21st century vocabulary is just beginning to develop. So, here’s another angle from which to consider this concept of ‘cumulative’ benefits from consistent practice. Consider meditation practice to be like setting up a consumer data base. Logging name, address, phone and product purchases is similar to building awareness through consistent mind training. Just as PCs can instantly sort thousands of data by any category once the data base is established, mind training practice activates our innate capacity for perceiving a clearer more complete picture, while simultaneously accessing detailed data for clarifying choices. Unlike a hard drive, our minds have almost limitless storage capacity. Science has revealed that humans currently use only a small percentage of our cognitive potential. Even Einstein, Stephen Hawking and other acclaimed geniuses tapped maybe 10% of their brain’s vast possibilities.

Uniquely Relevant

Gaining from Loss

Now that we’re getting on the same page in our understanding of this cumulative’ concept, I remind you that mind training does not focus on

One of my first benefits occurring several months into consistent practice was a gain in the form of a loss. In childhood, parental

programming included, “Expect the worst, and anything else will be a pleasant surprise.” Every project included plans B, C and D if plan A went awry. I developed strong skills for preparedness and adaptability leading to academic, social and business success. Meditation helped me recognize the energy-draining effects of the subliminal fear-based nature of my approach. My fearful mind habitually prepared to counteract some imagined worst case scenario. Oh yes, I aspired to excellence, providing great value for minimal cost, but it wasn’t until cumulative months of mind training that I noticed the presence of obsessive patterns of thoughts fearing unlikely catastrophe. That’s a whole different QoL than aspiring to provide excellent service for the joy of it. Recognition Leads to Healing

unnecessary fears of discord, poverty, illness. Outwardly, my life looked great, while my inner life felt painfully, relentlessly tumultuous. Softening that negativity is not a bad payout for investing less than an hour a day. All the hundreds of hours of seminars, courses, therapies and growth groups certainly paved the way for this liberating revelation to gently come to light after consistently meditating. Nature wastes nothing. Meditation calmed my mind enough for me to recognize a faulty irrational survival pattern that had functioned since childhood under my awareness radar. I wonder what breakthrough benefits you’ll have after daily practicing mindfully breathing in, breathing out. Bottom line guarantee is that the more you meditate, the more exponentially your benefits grow.

When the cumulative effects of consistent mind training kicked in, subconscious terror was a revelation. Now, I’ve begun to dissolve that long time reactive habit by simply recognizing its engagement and applying rational analysis to diffuse each episode. At times my nervous system has gained composure and serenity like I’ve never known because I’m losing the terror habit—and glad for that loss. Joy Is Present I now see how those subliminal dominating fears prevented full involvement with the present, where authentic joy resides. Fear I’d be judged incompetent, fear someone might feel disappointed, fear of being misunderstood, fear of losing independence escalated to imaginary,

If we already know how to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and turn it into fuel, why aren’t we doing more of it?

Carbon Engineering has proven at its Canadian pilot plant in Squamish, British Columbia that it can suck greenhouse gases out of the air through so-called Direct Air Capture (DAC) and process them into liquid fuels at a cost nearly as cheap as producing fossil fuels

With recent measurements detecting the highest levels of atmospheric CO2 in human history and experts warning we have less than a dozen years to turn around our profligate emissions to avoid cataclysmic changes. The time is now to start ratcheting down our carbon footprints. One solution that seems obvious but has been slow to get out of the starting gate is scrubbing large amounts of CO2 from the air and recycling it as a feedstock to produce carbon-neutral fuels to power our machines. We have known how to capture CO2 from the air at large scale since the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the late 1990s that environmentalists started looking to so-called “Direct Air Capture” (DAC) as one of a suite of tools at our disposal for dealing with the greenhouse effect. Since then, researchers have been scrambling to come up with the most efficient ways to capture CO2. Massachusetts-based start-up Carbon Engineering formed in 2011 in an effort to produce and eventually commercialize DAC technology that can use captured CO2 to make fuel at costs competitive with producing conventional fossil fuels. After several years of research and development and implementation of its technologies at a pilot plant in British Columbia, the company has been able to get the costs of capturing CO2 down to ~$100/ton—six times less than previous models predicted was possible. But it’s what happens next that has environmental advocates jazzed. Carbon Engineering’s solar-powered electrolyzer splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, and then combines the hydrogen with previously captured CO2 to make carbon-neutral gasoline, diesel or even jet fuel. Assuming a $100/ton cost for capturing atmospheric CO2, the company can produce these eco-friendly fuels for about $1/liter, which is only marginally more expensive than their fossilfuel counterparts. The hope is that costs will come down to below 14

fossil fuels as demand grows and facilities scale up. Also, as more states follow California’s lead in requiring increasingly significant portions of their fuel mixes to come from “low-carbon” sources, demand for these green alternative fuels will rise and prices will likely drop even more. R&D like this isn’t limited to the U.S. Spain’s SUN-to-LIQUID project uses unique solar concentration technologies that combine sunlight with oxygen and atmospheric CO2 to get three times as much energy out of the sun’s rays as existing solar “reactors.” The resulting “synthesis fuel” combines hydrogen and carbon monoxide and could be used to power vehicles or any type of engine equipped to deal with it. And a team of Swiss and Norwegian scientists wants to put such technologies to use on millions of solar-powered floating islands at sea that could suck CO2 out of the air and turn it into fuel without taking up any land or bothering human neighbors. Such a plan may seem far-fetched, but we need to be open to new idea if we are going to turn the tide on climate change before we reach the dreaded “point of no return.”

Is there an all natural way to prevent and get rid of acne?

Acne—when sebum from oil glands under the skin clogs pores causing small bacterial infections that lead to swelling and discomfort—isn’t just a temporary annoyance during our teenage years; it plagues many of us throughout our adult lives as well. Some 85 percent of Americans are prone to at least occasional break-outs or worse. But common over-the-counter treatments— most contain either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid—can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs and are also linked to more serious health problems. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warns that the use of these over-the-counter topicals “can cause rare but serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions or severe irritation.” Most of the top-selling brands incorporate benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid in their acne treatments, but the only way to know for sure what’s inside any given product is to consult its label. Even better, do some research online before you buy. The Environmental Working Group’s free online Skin Deep database lists ingredients— and more important, the health and environmental threats—of over 120,000 personal care products, including more than 2,000 different acne treatments now or recently available on store shelves. As far as alternative treatments go, tea tree oil, distilled from the leaves of Australia’s Melaleuca plant, seems to be a favorite. Studies have shown it to be equally as effective as benzoyl peroxide in reducing both the number of acne lesions and their severity. Likewise, Witch Hazel has similarly positive effects for most who try it, although there hasn’t been any scientific research to back that up yet.

According to National Geographic, dabbing a pasty mixture of powdered nutmeg and honey onto a problem pimple and leaving it there for 20 minutes can help unclog pores. Another trick is to soak a chamomile tea bag in cold water, squeeze it out, then hold it onto a pimple for 30 seconds. Icing a new pimple can also help reduce swelling and discomfort and shorten its lifespan. And smearing a little milk of magnesia on your face at bedtime can help prevent break-outs to begin with. Healthline’s Kayla McDonnell suggests dabbing zits with apple cider vinegar or witch hazel or applying a honey/cinnamon mask. Her other tips for pimple remediation include regular exfoliation, taking a zinc and/or fish oil supplement, eating a low glycemic load diet, cutting back on dairy, reducing stress and exercising regularly. If your acne is more severe, it might be worth consulting a dermatologist who can recommend prescription-strength treatments that can work with your body chemistry to limit the production of sebum in the first place. But drying, irritation and/or other side effects can ensue from these doctor-prescribed treatments as well, so be sure to let your doctor know so he or she can adjust the dosage or treatment plan. here’s no time like a hot summer picnic to let your patriotic spirit show. These all-American snacks featuring a classic favorite fruit – watermelon – are the perfect solution for nearly any summertime celebration. Watermelon is a patriotic picnic staple for countless reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a beloved treat that many people associate with memories from childhood. However, nostalgia isn’t the only reason adults are just as likely to gravitate toward watermelon at a summer event. Its sweet, cool and refreshing flavor also makes it a favorite for all ages. From a practical standpoint, watermelon is also quite portable, versatile and easy to serve, and with a composition of 92% water, it’s a simple way to sneak in some extra hydration on a hot day. Another benefit is its value; watermelon is one of the best values in the produce section among fruit, and just one watermelon can feed up to three dozen people. Serving watermelon at a party can be as simple as slicing wedges, or you can prepare a dish such as:

• A fruit basket, with the rind serving as a colorful bowl to hold the watermelon and other fresh fruits. • A charcuterie board with a selection of fruit, cheese and protein for simple snacking. • Creamy parfaits, perfect for a summery brunch or alternative to more traditional desserts. • A creatively colorful and patriotic “cake” that makes for a tasty centerpiece on the dessert table. Taking a Closer Look at Letting Go

Suzanne E. Eder

On a recent walk I was reflecting on the concept of letting go – of getting out of our own way and allowing the grace and intelligence of Life to move us forward. Don’t you love the sound of that? So supportive and nourishing and ease-filled…and yet, for many people, it’s confusing and seemingly difficult to do. One of the first questions clients ask, once they’ve acknowledged a need and desire to experience the relief of letting go, is what they’re actually letting go of. Usually they’ve been trying so hard for so long to make something happen, they think what they need to let go of is the desire itself. 18

And while it’s true that our desires shift and change over time, and that it’s always beneficial to pause, go within and ask our heart of hearts what we want now ( as opposed to what we may have wanted in the past), what usually needs to be released is the struggle and frustration, not the desire. What most people desire are experiences such as greater fulfillment at work, satisfying creative self-expression, financial plenty, vibrant health and loving relationships. These are natural, life-giving desires that generate a sense of aliveness and fulfillment as they are realized. They call us toward our most meaningful, peaceful and joyful lives. They are meant to be honored, not tossed into the trash bin of “not going to happen.”

But because so many of us don’t fully grasp the ramifications of being a vibrational being in a vibrational universe, we don’t understand that pushing and forcing and struggling to make something happen generate feelings such as frustration, resentment and overwhelm – all of which is vibrational static that interferes with the natural evolution of our desires from ideas to experiences. At a certain level, though, most people intuitively recognize when they’re trying too hard, even if they don’t understand energy dynamics. In that recognition – and in their exhaustion – they understand that they need to relax and get out of their own way. And so they figure out what they can delegate, eliminate or do less of, and maybe they even schedule a vacation or retreat to get away from it all and focus on relaxation, all of which are excellent, self-loving things to do. But the thing is, changing action without changing mindset doesn’t actually change anything long-term. It’s like moving pieces around on a game board. You change the specifics of how you get to the end point, but you’re still playing the same game. It’s time for a different game, one that reflects the vibrational nature of your being. In this game there is no end point, just ever-expanding cycles of growth, joy and fulfillment. As a vibrational being, the tone or quality of your consciousness determines the tone or quality of your life, and it sets the stage for the specific opportunities, circumstances and relationships you experience. It determines the kinds of ideas you have, the types of people who show up in your life, the level of income you can currently realize, the nature of opportunities that present themselves to you and so much more, because one of the properties of energy is that like attracts like. As you vibrate, so you create. As I’m using the term, “consciousness” is the constellation of your ideas, assumptions, beliefs, opinions, interpretations, conclusions, thoughts, worldview, feelings, doubts, fears, etc., all of which have an energetic reality to them. It is the composite of the intangible yet very real aspects of you that define and express who you are. Your consciousness is the energetic matrix or blueprint for your life, and the really good news is that it can be changed if you don’t like something about your life right now. You can change the blueprint by cultivating new perspectives and abandoning the ones that no longer serve you – which brings us back to letting go.

doubt. We need to let go of self-condemnation. We need to let go of blame, both of ourselves and others. We need to let go of the belief that we have to prove our worthiness in order to receive anything good in life, and we need to let go of the belief that struggle is the way to prove it. I could go on and on about the kinds of thoughts we need to let go of, but I’m sure you get the idea. The point here is the understanding that letting go of tasks, activities or people, from within a consciousness of struggle or frustration, will provide only temporary relief. Unless we change the way we think, we’ll simply recreate the same kinds of circumstances that are currently frustrating us. To experience the kind of ease we long for, we have to make a firm and loving commitment to shifting our consciousness. We have to change the way we think and imagine and believe, change what we assume to be true of ourselves and change what we believe is possible for us to experience. This requires focus and effort, but it doesn’t require struggle. As with anything else, struggle only gets in the way. The key is to take on these changes from an underlying intention to love ourselves through the process, and that means we start focusing on feeling as good as we can, moment to moment. We explore and experiment with perspectives that are supportive and encouraging, we learn how to soothe ourselves when we wobble and we look for ways to have fun along the way. And as we continue to cultivate a loving, supportive, peaceful and optimistic consciousness, it becomes easier and easier to let go of thoughts of worry and struggle. Because we’re now focusing elsewhere, they no longer have the same strength they had before; our attention doesn’t get automatically pulled into them. Letting go becomes something we naturally do when unhelpful thoughts arise, rather than a dramatic ritual of release or an impatient demand we place on ourselves to stop thinking those kinds of thoughts. And with each letting go of a struggle- or fear-based thought, we create a spaciousness of mind that invites inspiration and possibility into our lives. We flow in our own current of life-giving energy. As our lives become more gracious, more delightful and more easefilled, we understand more deeply than ever the powerful creative force of our own consciousness. We realize that choosing loving thoughts is neither naïve nor foolish nor fake. It is the most responsible thing we can do to create the kind of world we want to live in.

Many of us have been taught we have to work really hard to succeed at anything, and that belief alone is the root cause of a lot of frustration, resentment and overwhelm as we attempt to work harder and harder to achieve our goals, not realizing that the belief in struggle, and the associated uncomfortable feelings that arise as we struggle, are getting in the way of what we want. Our belief in struggle creates more of it. Talk about a perspective that no longer serves us! We don’t need to work more, we need to work less. Yet before that strategy can pay off for us, we need to let go of something other than specific tasks or activities. We need to let go of the thoughts that run counter to an ease-filled, satisfying experience. We need to let go of selfwww.livingwellmagazine.net

Mayo Mindfulness:

Try The 4 A’s For Stress Relief Dana Sparks

Expand your stress management toolkit by mastering these four strategies for coping with stress: avoid, alter, accept and adapt. When we feel the effects of stress weighing us down, it's like lugging a backpack that's becoming heavier by the minute. Too much stress can make our journey through life difficult. Happy events, such as a wedding, as well as unhappy events, such as overwork, can cause stress. When your stress level exceeds your ability to cope, you need to restore the balance by reducing the stressors or increasing your ability to cope or both. 20

Try using one of the four A’s:

Accept

Avoid • Alter • Accept • or Adapt

Sometimes we may have no choice but to accept things the way they are. For those times try to:

Avoid

Talk with someone. You may not be able to change a frustrating situation, but that doesn’t mean your feelings aren’t legitimate. Phone or schedule a coffee break with an understanding friend. You may feel better after talking it out.

Believe it or not, you can simply avoid a lot of stress. Plan ahead, rearrange your surroundings and reap the benefits of a lighter load. Take control of your surroundings. Is the traffic insane? Leave early for work or take the longer, less traveled route. Hate waiting in line at the corporate cafeteria? Pack your lunch and eat at your desk or in a break room. Avoid people who bother you. If you have a co-worker who causes your jaw to tense, put physical distance between the two of you. Sit far away at meetings or walk around his or her cubicle, even if it requires some extra steps. Learn to say no. You have a lot of responsibilities and demands on your time. At a certain point, you cross the line between being charitable and being foolish. Turn down the neighborhood sports league. Pass on coaching T-ball. Those around you will appreciate more time with a relaxed you. And you’ll have time to enjoy them, too. Ditch part of your list. Label your to-do list with A’s, B’s and C’s, according to importance. On hectic days, scratch the C’s from your list. However, some problems can’t be avoided. For those situations, try another technique.

Alter One of the most helpful things you can do during times of stress is to take inventory, then attempt to change your situation for the better. Respectfully ask others to change their behavior. And be willing to do the same. Small problems often create larger ones if they aren’t resolved. If you’re tired of being the target of a friend’s jokes at parties, ask him or her to leave you out of the comedy routine. In return, be willing to enjoy his or her other jokes and thank him or her for humoring you. Communicate your feelings openly. Remember to use “I” statements, as in, “I feel frustrated by shorter deadlines and a heavier workload. Is there something we can do to balance things out?” Manage your time better. Lump together similar tasks — group your phone calls, car errands and computer-related tasks. The reward of increased efficiency will be extra time. State limits in advance. Instead of stewing over a colleague’s nonstop chatter, politely start the conversation with, “I’ve got only five minutes to cover this.”

Forgive. It takes energy to be angry. Forgiving may take practice, but by doing so you will free yourself from burning more negative energy. Why stew in your anger when you could shrug and move on? Practice positive self-talk. It’s easy to lose objectivity when you’re stressed. One negative thought can lead to another, and soon you’ve created a mental avalanche. Be positive. Instead of thinking, “I am horrible with money, and I will never be able to control my finances,” try this: “I made a mistake with my money, but I’m resilient. I’ll get through it.” Learn from your mistakes. There is value in recognizing a “teachable moment.” You can’t change the fact that procrastination hurt your performance, but you can make sure you set aside more time in the future.

Adapt Thinking you can’t cope is one of the greatest stressors. That’s why adapting — which often involves changing your standards or expectations — can be most helpful in dealing with stress. Adjust your standards. Do you need to vacuum and dust twice a week? Would macaroni and cheese be an unthinkable substitute for homemade lasagna? Redefine success and stop striving for perfection, and you may operate with a little less guilt and frustration. Practice thought-stopping. Stop gloomy thoughts immediately. Refuse to replay a stressful situation as negative, and it may cease to be negative. Reframe the issue. Try looking at your situation from a new viewpoint. Instead of feeling frustrated that you’re home with a sick child, look at it as an opportunity to bond, relax and finish a load of laundry. Adopt a mantra. Create a saying such as, “I can handle this,” and mentally repeat it in tough situations. Create an assets column. Imagine all of the things that bring you joy in life, such as vacation, children and pets. Then call on that list when you’re stressed. It will put things into perspective and serve as a reminder of life’s joys. Look at the big picture. Ask yourself, “Will this matter in a year or in five years?” The answer is often no. Realizing this makes a stressful situation seem less overwhelming. Choosing the right technique Stressors — good and bad — are a part of every life. Practice applying these techniques to balance your stress equation. With practice, that once-hefty backpack will become your private bag of tricks. Soon, you’ll be able to pull out just the tool that will keep you hiking through life at a steady clip.

NOW BOARDING

Survival Must-Haves

“Blow in my ear and I’ll go anywhere....” by Travel Host Linda Cooper The joy of travel never gets old. I’m surprised with the amount of travel I do for business filming my tv show “Travel Time with Linda”, that I still get a euphoric rush in anticipation for an upcoming trip and the giddiness I feel when hearing that familiar “Now Boarding” flight announcement over the airport PA. My gypsy spirit awakens every few months, often triggered by the intense feeling of being land-locked, recognizable only to those who grew up by an ocean like myself as a native Californian that now resides in Dallas.

For those of you fortunate to live in close proximity to the beach, never take it for granted.... My intense desire so palpable to hear the waves crash, smell the salty spray of ocean in my hair and the zenlike sensation of feeling “grounded” walking along its sandy beach is one of many reasons why I love to rent a beach house every year in Carlsbad for leisure time with my family.

How I found this beach house is a very special story and can best be described really that the house found me. The view that welcomes you once walking inside (pictured above) still gives me the chills each and every time, year after year. As I began packing my “must-have travel essentials” for my upcoming beach retreat, I remembered a promise I made as I’m often asked to share the hottest lifestyle finds I can’t live without, so here’s a short list of my latest obsessions. 22

Because this market is so young there's still a lot of legalities and questions to work out. On May 31st the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold a public hearing on regulating hemp-derived CBD and will be addressing how CBD will be sold. This much-anticipated hearing will feature testimony from stakeholders and is aimed at informing FDA’s regulatory approach to CBD products. This public hearing is one of the first steps in that rule-making process, and the FDA listed a number of “unanswered questions” that it hopes will be addressed at the hearing. What does this mean for the consumer? CBD Products will soon become much more accessible filling the aisles of brick and mortar stores you frequently visit.

Grilled Peach and Basil S’mores

The cookbook that reimagines what the s’more can be: S’mores! Gooey, Melty, Crunchy Riffs on the Campfire Classic by Dan Whalen, the culinary mashup genius behind Tots! and founder of the popular recipe blog The Food in My Beard. With fifty mouthwatering recipes Dan Whalen S’mores! brings his signature spirited originality to the s’more, redefining what a s’more is and know it can be made with recipes for everything from snacks and appetizers to main dishes, sides and dessert, Whalen proves the S’more can go beyond the campfire. Surprising, simple and delicious recipes include:

Grilling peaches really brings out the sweetness in the fruit and boosts the charred flavors you expect in s’mores. I like to pair peaches with basil, and firmly believe that basil should be included in more desserts. Makes 12 Takes 20 minutes Nonstick cooking spray 2 peaches, halved and pitted 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

12 whole graham crackers, broken in half to form 24 squares 2 bars (1.55 ounces each) milk chocolate, broken into individual pips 12 regular marshmallows 12 fresh basil leaves 1 Heat a grill to high or place a grill pan over high heat. Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and turn the broiler to its highest setting. Preheat for 5 to 10 minutes. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. 2 Place the peach halves in a medium bowl with the olive oil and salt and toss to coat. Grill them until they’re brown and charred with grill marks, about 5 minutes. Flip and grill the other side, 5 minutes more. Transfer the peaches to a plate. When they’re cool, slice each peach half into 6 wedges.

Make a S’more with Peeps instead of marshmallows or a savory s’more where melty cheese replaces the marshmallow and chocolate. Every recipe is a stacked sandwich, but the flavors and ingredients are full of surprises. With S’mores! home cooks can now enjoy this ooey-gooey goodness all year round!

Keep a close eye on them. 4 Transfer the s’mores to a serving dish. Top each marshmallow with 1 basil leaf and another graham cracker square. Serve immediately.

Bacon S’mores

Everything Bagel S’mores

Chocolate-covered bacon was all the rage on the internet a few years back. As I do with any trend, I stepped back to think: After all the hype is over, what else can this become? The answer? The crunchy cracker of a s’more! You can add graham crackers to this recipe, if you want, but I like the pure simplicity of the bacon, chocolate, and marshmallow. Makes 12 Takes 30 minutes

Everything is a bit of a misleading title for this s’more because I kept the onion and garlic out of the spice mixture. To me, the cream cheese, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds are enough to evoke an everything bagel flavor—onion and garlic don’t really have a place in dessert. If you want to up the bagel (and savory) ante, use bagel chips instead of the graham cracker squares. Makes 12 Takes 15 minutes

24 bacon slices

Nonstick cooking spray

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

12 whole graham crackers, broken in half to form 24 squares

1/4 cup heavy (whipping) cream Pinch of kosher salt

1 cup cream cheese (from a tub, not a brick)

Nonstick cooking spray

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

12 regular marshmallows

2 tablespoons poppy seeds

1 To magically transform your bacon into a cracker shape, cut each strip in half and press the fatty parts together to form a square. Place the squares in a skillet over medium heat (you may need to work in batches) and use a spatula or a steak weight to press the bacon down as it cooks and fuses into a glassy pane, 3 to 4 minutes per side. 2 Combine the chocolate chips, cream, and salt in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium power for 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is just melted and the mixture is combined. Be careful not to overheat the ganache, as it can become grainy. 3 Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and turn the broiler to its highest setting. Preheat for 5 to 10 minutes. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.

Sprinkle each square with 1/2 teaspoon of sesame seeds and 1/2 teaspoon of poppy seeds. 3 Place the marshmallows on the prepared baking sheet. Flower Bed Maintenance Keeps Gardens Looking Their Best All Summer Long By Melinda Myers

A bit of grooming and care will keep your flower gardens looking their best throughout the hot summer months and into fall. Remove the flower stems of salvias, veronicas and similar flowers as the blooms begin to fade. Use a pruner or sharp garden scissors and cut just above the first set of leaves or above the side shoots where new flower buds are forming. Cut back flopping perennials like Walker’s Low catmint, veronica and Salvia that have finished their second flush of flowers. New growth will be sturdier, more compact and eventually covered with blooms. Plants like daylilies and balloon flower require a bit different care. Remove the individual blooms as they fade for maximum beauty. Once all the individual flowers have bloomed out, you can cut the flower stem back at the base. Keep coral bells tidy and many varieties blooming longer with a bit of deadheading. Remove the whole flower stem, once blooms fade, back to the leafy base where it arises from the plant. And cut a few flowers to enjoy indoors in a summer bouquet. Remove faded flowers for a neater and tidier appearance, but no additional bloom, on peonies, lamb’s ear and bergenia. Removing the seedpods of peonies as they form, back to a healthy set of leaves, helps keep stems upright and makes for a tidier plant throughout the summer. Deadheading won't extend the bloom for columbine, but it will prevent reseeding - if that’s a concern for you. Prune the flowering stems back to their base in the foliage.

Stake taller perennials in need of a bit of support. Use bamboo stakes and ties, twigs woven into stems or other attractive or virtually invisible supports. Then make a note on next year’s calendar as a reminder to put stakes in place in spring as plants emerge.

Removing spent flowers on perennials like bee balm, purple coneflower, salvia, veronicas, garden phlox and many others will encourage additional bloom. You may want to skip deadheading of any late blooming varieties. This allows them to form seed pods for a bit of winter interest.

Spread a layer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles or other organic mulch over the soil surface. This conserves moisture, helps suppress weeds and improves the soil as they break down.

Pruning your flowers can also impact the appearance, size, and flowering of plants. Prune Russian sage and upright sedums, like Autumn Joy, subject to flopping back halfway in mid-June to encourage sturdy growth. Pruning coneflowers and other late blooming perennials once, early in the season, can result in shorter plants that flower a bit later. Pinch asters and mums back to 6 inches throughout June and into early July in southern regions for compact plants and an attractive fall display.

A bit of pinching and pruning now as various flowers fade will extend the beauty and your enjoyment throughout summer and into fall. Further improve your garden’s beauty by removing or trimming back discolored foliage with sharp scissors or a hand pruner.

5 Tips: What You Should Know About Tai Chi for Health Tai Chi is a centuries-old, mind and body practice. It involves certain postures and gentle movements with mental focus, breathing, and relaxation. The movements can be adapted or practiced while walking, standing, or sitting. Several clinical trials have evaluated the effects of Tai Chi in people with various health conditions. Here are five things to know about Tai Chi for health.

1. Research findings suggest that practicing

Tai Chi may improve balance and stability in older people and reduce the risk of falls. There is also some evidence that Tai Chi may improve balance impairments in people with mid-tomoderate Parkinson’s disease.

2. There is some evidence to suggest that

practicing Tai Chi may help people manage chronic pain associated with knee osteoarthritis and help people with fibromyalgia sleep better and cope with pain, fatigue, and depression.

3. Although Tai Chi has not been shown

to have an effect on the disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis (e.g., tender and swollen joints, activities of daily living), there is some evidence that

4. Tai Chi may improve lower extremity

(ankle) range of motion in people with rheumatoid arthritis. It is not known if Tai Chi improves pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis or quality of life.

5. Tai Chi may promote quality of life and

mood in people with heart failure and cancer. Tai Chi also may offer psychological benefits, such as reducing anxiety. However, differences in how the research on anxiety was conducted make it difficult to draw firm conclusions about this. Take charge of your health—talk with your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use. Together, you can make shared, well-informed decisions.

HOW TO SELL A LUXURY HOUSE: Understanding the modern luxury buyer As a Realtor, I somemes assume that the industry lingo is understood by the public. With this in mind, the term “luxury home” is defined by the sales price. Typically, it is house being sold at three or more mes the average sale price in an area. Let’s say $1,000,000 plus in our area. Once upon a me, the luxury buyer was seeking the biggest house with European style design with many compartmentalized rooms, each designated to perform a specific funcon, and a large parcel of land. While each market certainly has its nuances, according to the Instute for Luxury Home Markeng, one trend has become very apparent – It’s quality over space and all about the experience! The key to selling in today’s market is understanding what the buyer is demanding now to maximize your return. The affluent are increasingly invesng in intangible goods such as privacy, lifestyle, and educaon. The general message is that luxury is not about throwing money around by adding more fancy materials (like gold faucets, marble floors & huge columns) but rather, creang a comfortable experience that begets the sense of luxurious wellness. The luxury market is compeve with more sellers than buyers, or what we refer to as a “Buyer’s Market.” This is unlike what we have been seeing in lower price points where homes are selling quickly with mulple offers and oen selling for above the asking price.

Here are five things I am recommending to my clients to make their home stand out: No Draperies - (regardless of how expensive or custom they are) Cluer-Free Rooms - (Every day I tour homes with too much oversized furniture; this defeats the sense of well-being.) Organize everything from closets to pantry to garage. When in doubt, take it OUT! Invest in simple statement art rather than ornate collecons and wallpaper. Less is More. Refresh lighng inside and outside. Replace old fixtures that are heavy and dated. Luxury is linked to freedom and feeling protected. It can be simple,
