Women's Heritage Walk - Case Study

Page 1

The WOMEN’S HERITAGE WALK from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi honors the women of the United Arab Emirates who made this journey twice a year not so long ago. Fifty participants retrace this historical trek every year to honor the women who helped sculpt this country. This experience is a celebration of the past and an invitation to shape a vibrant future. Culture is assimilated. The heritage of this region passed down through traditions, customs and habits, imbue today’s women with the same strength, resilience and tenacity found in their predecessors. An innovative multi-sensory approach was developed to better understand the rituals initiated from the hardships of daily patterns of life in the desert. The WOMEN’S HERITAGE WALK affords a unique perspective of Emirati culture through sights, sounds, smells, tastes, feelings and unparalleled personal insights. The WHW was launched in 2015 by American author Jody Ballard and has become an annual event that recreates an Emirati tradition in which women would cross the desert on foot and on camels from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain in search of cooler climate while the men of their community were at sea. Through the five day walk and the three months of preparation leading up to it, the event focuses on building four pillars: culture & heritage, health & wellness, community building, and women’s empowerment.
