MY DESIGN METHOD

CONTEXT Design does not stand alone. For me, it comes with the context. In most situations, it is closely connected to the social background.

DESIGN BRIEF For me, design is not just about certain profession. It is a universal methodology of everything, of how I percieve, how I transform, how I work and how I live as well. The boundries are vague.

To define a clear design brief, mainly based on the targeted user and scenario, and the main problem to solve. Methods: Obseravation and research, analysis, etc.

CONCEPTUALIZTION Transform a vague conept into 2D sketches or 3D renderings. Developing concepts and do testings.

DESIGN OUTPUT The most important part of outputting a design is the successful communication. An effective solution can be anything, it is not limited by the form. It can be videos, solid product, a system, an app, etc.

CONTEXT

Academic Work, Graduation Project 2014.02 ~ 2014.06

The booming of online communities As a matter of fact, SNS has become the main part of our social activities. People today tend to share things on all kinds of social websites instead of face-to-face communication. Photos, moods, books, movies, music, etc., all these fragments are simply being the medium, what stands behind is the urge to share as well as to participate, to connect as well as to communicate with others. How to enhance people’s offline connection through design comes to my concern.

Obvio

Public furniture that constructs an offline reading community Obvio is a set of furniture, whose center is a book-exchanging case. It aims to construct an offline reading community where people can share with strangers their books and ideas. This is a practice of participatary design, people’s involvement just add up more possibilities to it.

RESEARCH

Comparative research

How does products strengthen people’s offline interaction?

Passive Through the restraint of form.

Two principals: 1. Constructing a community that based on certain interest.

Button Press and the book channel comes out. Book channel Use the weight of book to unlock the lock. Lock The handle cannot be spinned without inserting a book.

One important principal: one book for another. The lock ensures the structure only works when a book is inserted.

Book Exchanging Case Share your books and get an unexpected book in return. Through this intriguing process, more people will be involved in the book-exchanging activity. More sharing, more unexpectations and more friends.

DESIGN OUTPUT Seat With grids on one side, people can hang books and magazines on the seat. More convenient to put on and off something to read.

Message Screen Pull down the replaceable paper and write ideas on this ‘message board’. When the paper is used up, it can be a screen for viewing and decorating.

Design Thinking “Design not only the product itself, but human’s behavior based on that as well.”

Answering for the most destructive catastrophe Earthquakes are among the most destructive types of natural disasters. However, many do not perish during the tremor but die being trapped and injured under rubbles, waiting for rescue. Ted Constan, an American NGO, says that some

200,000 people were injured or trapped but not killed by the quake; 25,000 of them died each day that has passed since the tremor. How to increase the survival chance of entrapped victims by self-rescue products comes to our concern.

Earthquake Survival Kit

Aims to increase the survival chance of entrapped victims This kit contains 3 main parts: the helmet, hydration system and dustproof mask, which not only offers protection through the disaster, but also providing guidance and sending out distress signal for user.

Design Thinking “Design shall satisfy not only the functional aspect, but emotional aspect as well, together they make functionality.

My Role in Project During this project, I worked as the leader of our team, collaborating with Mechanics Institute, Beijing University of Science and Technology. My work was from identifying problems to the concept development, including usage mode defination and product visualization.

Enlighten our everyday object Over the past few decades, Chinese’s everyday life have been filled with mass production products. Coming at great convenience and low price, they are also easy to be disposed as well. Purchase, dispose and repeat again, that’s happening everyday in China’s metropolitans for most people. In this project, I explored how to build connection between people and their everyday objects. Hopefully in this way will these everyday objects be a more memoriable part of our life as they used to be.

Bones

A coffee set inspired by human’s vertebrae This coffee set aims to add more fun to everyday objects by providing user an interesting experience. Adopting an innovative structure to combine bone china and walnut, I focus on the connection of natural materials.

CONCEPUALIZTION BONES is not just a simple imitation of vertebrae’s form, the function and usability has also been taken into consideration.

Not making products thinner and cooler just because we can Working as an industrial designer in consultancy agency for some time, I figured out most people-clients, are seeking for thinner and cooler ID for their products (no matter which category they belong to). And the outcome is a house that looks trendy and expensive, while cold and emotionless. This forces me to reconsider what an electronic product should be. Especially for household consumer products, what they are for user, and how they go with the surrounding. Only by reconsidering the potential of a product and its context, harmonious relation between people and objects will be established.

Message Box

Transform a digital wifi frame into a message box Our client doesn’t see his wifi photo frame simpily as a product to display photos. He sees it as a communication tool between families and friends. So do we. What we do is trying to redefine this photo frame, and transform it into a message box for communication and connection. In this case, there’s no big difference between a photo frame and a cell phone-all for better connection between people.
