INTRODUCTION

VISION

6

To transcend the amount of waste, SCADpad seeks to enable, educate, and exemplify sustainable and resilient practices within our homes and communities. By challenging society’s perception of essential needs and effectively facilitating a behavior change, SCADpad becomes an active lesson in sustainable nutrient management, taking advantage of biological and technical resources as nutrients and teaching the user to efficiently participate in the process.

BLUE SKY IDEAS 10

In 2010, the United States was ranked as the second largest energy consumer in the world, most of which was fossil fuels. The United States relies heavily on petroleum, nuclear, coal, natural gas and renewable energy. Commercial and residential buildings are the largest consumer of energy followed by industry and transportation. The total per-capita energy consumption in the U.S. is 98,418 kiloWatt hours per year while the worldwide per-capita energy consumption is 21,213 kiloWatt hours per year. SCAD has an incredible opportunity to take advantage of their location in midtown Atlanta as a way to create a ‘billboard’ for themselves, displaying their innovative design capabilities. Ideas that we proposed involved exterior green wall systems, solar mobile and electric vehicle charging stations on the roof, a community garden for education, solar and wind power, natural daylight capturing systems, and more. The opportunity is there to reinvent the parking garage, proposing a new concept for adaptive reuse worldwide.

OVER

RECYCLING

ONLY

75% 30%

OF WASTE CAN BE RECYCLED OF WASTE IS RECYCLED

Recycling (upcycling) is a process in which materials that would otherwise be discarded as waste are used and created into products of new substance that are better in quality for the environment. Upcylicng differs from recycling in that most products that are recycled are reused for lesser quality grade and often require more energy during the manufacturing process. These products are generally called downcycled materials and include some plastics in which the plastic turns into lesser quality, delineating it into a higher number designated at the bottom of the plastic container.

CO NC ERNS Most products are not appropriately labeled if they are recyclable or not. Some consumers are not educated on recycling Certain items that are deemed “non-recyclable” due to the composition of the material.

O P P O RT U NI TIES

12

The recycling process can convert waste into products that can be reused and consumed. Recycling reduces the need for manufacturing additional materials and goods. Recycling reduces the amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Coca-Cola offers a Recycling Bin Grand Program in which communities and colleges can apply for recyclable Coca-Cola bins to be provided for parks and universities.

The Gimme 5 Program takes #5 plastics and turns the upcycled material into new products, such as toothbrushes. Most #5 plastics are discarded into landfills or downcycled.

Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program takes old sneakers and grinds the rubber from the sole to create new upcycled materials called Nike Grind. This material is used for sports floors.

AMERICANS DISPOSE OF

250,000,000

NON-RECYCLING

PLASTIC BOTTLES EVERY HOUR

14

The United States generates over 250 million tons of garbage annually. This number has tripled since the 1960s with the emergence of products being built in obsolescence. While most Americans are not cognizant of the amount of trash each household generates, there is a haphazard sense of “out of sight out of mind” regarding the disposal of garbage. It is important to note that there is no such thing as “away” for the disposal of trash but rather an elsewhere, specifically, landfills. While it is hard to determine the number of landfills across the globe, there are generally landfills in every city, often times with multiple landfills per city.

T I P S O N T RAS H Welcome alternatives to disposables: Swap paper towels for reusable rags, swap sandwich baggies for kitchen towels or stainless containers, drop garbage liners all together Buy in bulk or at the counter Shop the farmer’s market: they’ll take the egg carton and the berries baskets back for reuse. Your veggies will also most likely be free of plastic and stickers. Arm yourself with a reusable water bottle, a couple grocery totes, a few cloth bags and reusable jars and bottles. Get your 5Rs right: Refuse what you do not need, Reduce what you do need, Reuse what you consume, Recycle what you cannot Refuse, Reduce or Reuse, and Rot (Compost) the rest. Refill your bottles with bulk shampoo and conditioner.

WATER

Water conservation is the active management and protection of fresh water resources through policy and strategy.

The World is made up of 他 water, however, access to clean drinking water is scarce in many countries. Over 1 billion individuals do not have access to clean water across the globe and over 3 million people die annually from water related ailments. While many individuals in developing countries walk nearly 10 miles a day to collect drinking water, the average Westerner uses nearly 45-70 gallons of clean water daily. Water conservation is a temporary solution to this wicked problem. Focused on different strategic methodologies such as reducing the amount of water being used, as well as purchasing water saving household items, conservation of water can be a powerful tool if a multitude of individuals across the globe are committed to the same goals.

18

TI PS O N S AV I NG WAT ER Always turn taps off tightly so they do not drip. Use an aerator and/or a water flow-reducer attachment on your tap to reduce your water usage. When hand-washing dishes, never run water continuously. Wash dishes in a partially filled sink and then rinse them using the spray attachment on your tap.

When washing or shaving, partially fill the sink and use that water rather than running the tap continuously. (This saves about 60% of the water normally used.) Use short bursts of water to clean razors. Use only cleaning products that will not harm the environment when they are washed away after use. Look for “environmentally friendly products when shopping.

When brushing your teeth, turn the water off while you are actually brushing. Use short bursts of water for cleaning your brush. (This saves about 80% of the water normally used.)

19

GREY & BLACK WATER 20

Grey water is waste water that can be recycled from many different types of units including dishwashers, showers, sinks, laundry facilities and also rain water. Black water is the controlled biological decomposition of organic material. In residential areas, greywater makes up 50-80% of the water used in a single household. Greywater from the shower/bath makes up nearly 35% of water being used in a single household.

B L AC K WAT E R CONC ER NS Blackwater is loaded with biological materials such as feces or grease, therefore it can be a source of disease. Blackwater is often treated in a municipal water treatment plant, a process that consumes a lot of water.

B L AC K WAT E R OPPORT UNIT IES Blackwater is a biological nutrient; greywater can be recycled. Management systems can strive for zero net water. There are many products that function efficiently while conserving water in the process.

COMPOSTING 28

Composting is the process of reusing biological organic matter into rich, fertile soil. This process allows for decomposed matter to regenerate itself into nutrients creating prolific soil. While there are many types of composting, vermicomposting is the most viable option for apartment living. Vermicomposting involves the use of worms to increase the rate at which organic matter is broken down. The worms used during the process turn the microbes and bacteria into nutrient soil. When vermicomposting, it is important that the composting container is made from wood to ensure the bedding has ample space to breathe, for proper ventilation enabling the moisture to escape efficiently.

T I P S O N CO MPO ST Worms love coffee grounds! Food scraps is great for compost bins. Think of leaves, vegetables, and grass clippings. Plants that have been treated with pesticides and/or herbicides (weeds and lawn clippings) should be avoided. Straw is an excellent source of carbon for your compost pile. However, it may contain weed seeds, so make sure the pile is “cooking properly. Do not compost fats, pet droppings, or animal products. They will attract pests to the pile and can spread disease. Finished compost is usually less than half the volume of the materials you started with, but it’s much denser.

The use of gray water at decentralized sites for landscape irrigation [...] reduces the amount of potable water distributed to these sites, the amount of fertilizer needed, and the amount of wastewater generated, transported, and treated at wastewater treatment facilities. In other words, water reuse saves water, energy, and money.–– EPA

GREY WATER

REUSING AND RECYCLING ALTERNATIVE WATER SUPPLIES reduces the pressure on our water resources and the environment reduces and prevents pollution | When pollutant discharges to oceans, rivers, and other water bodies are curtailed, the pollutant loadings to these bodies are decreased. Moreover, in some cases, substances that can be pollutants when discharged to a body of water can be beneficially reused for irrigation. For example, recycled water may contain higher levels of nutrients, such as nitrogen, than potable water. Application of recycled water for agricultural and landscape irrigation can provide an additional source of nutrients and lessen the need to apply synthetic fertilizers. saves energy | Recycling water on site or nearby reduces the energy needed to move water longer distances or pump water from deep within an aquifer.

GREY WATER

A pump designed for greywater The pump is different in 3 ways: -There is no single float to turn it on and off. There are two magnetic micro floats that activate the control box that senses the water level. This allows for the full capacity of the tank to be used, it allows for a full flow of water to be distributed thus filling your drip tube and importantly reaching the end of your drip tube line. It also means that the pump isn’t cycling (switching on and off) unnecessarily and that the full surface area of the filters are exposed to the incoming greywater. -The control box switches the pump on independently of the magnetic floats. This makes sure the minimum residual is remaining in the tank. -There are no external timers in the Aqua2use. Other units may have to rely on external timers to make sure any residual is pumped out within 24 hours. The Aqua2use control box automatically turns on the pump to see if there is any residual water.

COMMUNAL RECYCLING

Option 2 Recycling through Gamification Objective Make a bin that creates a game-like experience for users by combining lights and sounds upon deposit of recyclable materials. The unit will give the option either to play or to use it in a traditional manner, as well as be able to be easily emptied for maintenance. Game Logic Sequence - The user will push a button to start the game mode - One at a time, a light on one of the receptacle holes will light up for two seconds in a random order - If the user deposits an item in the hole that is lit, then a sound will play - If the user does not deposit an item in the hole that is lit, after the two seconds, a new light will turn on and that one will turn off - If three lights pass without any interaction, the game mode will turn off Notes - The upper portion of the bin will be completely removable - The diamond top will open like a door, hinged at the top - The hardware must adhere to these constraints

Necessary Circuitry THIS WAS NOT A VIABLE OPTION FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: The amount of individuals inhabiting the scadpad area is too low for the complex recycling system, so therefore it does not seem like a financially feasible option for the temporary residents.

COMMUNAL RECYCLING

The coding necessary to implement the gamification recycling unit would have to be developed by a programmer.

! ! ! ! Design Guidelines for GamiÞcation System of Single Stream Recycling Unit

Step 1: A micro controller will need to be purchased in order for this to work. I recommend the

Arduino Mega. The UNO is lacking in analog inputs, and the Mega has enough pins to let you do whatever you want without running out. The Mega also operates at 5Volts, which is the same as the most popular UNO version, so it will be compatible with just about anything the UNO is compatible with. You can get one on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Arduino-MEGA-2560-Board-R3/dp/B006UTBDGA/ Step 2: Next up, we want to incorporate sound in this project. Music and noise lets people know that something is happening. Implementing sound is inexpensive and easy if you use a piezo buzzer, but

the range of sounds you can make is quite limited. You would only be able to make differently pitched buzzing noises. While you can control these noises so they make simple songs, you are essentially limited to making the same noises that cell phones did back in the late 90's before "polyphonic" ringtones were the new hit thing. If you want to be able to play any kind of sound you want, you have to shell out for more circuitry. This "shield" is an add-on for the Arduino that looks to be exactly what you need to play whatever .mp3 Þle you want out of your recycling bin: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10628 Step 3: This will allow you to play MP3 sound Þles off of a micro SD card. SD card should be pre-

formatted with FAT16 or FAT32 Þlesystem, you can do this by plugging it in to a laptop and using any of the free software programs out there. Make sure it is a micro SD card or it will not Þt. Here is an 8GB card that comes with a regular SD card and USB adapters so you can plug it into any laptop to get your sound Þles onto it: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11609 Step 4:This shield has no headers attached to it, but the good news is that if you put stackable headers on it they line right up with the pins on the Arduino Mega. Use stackable headers to easily access pins A0-A5, which will be used to detect an object passing in front of the photodiodes (more on this later). Here are some stackable headers: http://www.amazon.com/SparkFun-Arduino-Stackable-Header-Kit/dp/B004G56J8W/ Step 5: Here is some documentation on the shield that illustrates exactly which pins must be used on the Arduino and which of these will be permanently tied (meaning you cannot use them in the

program for any purposes other than their assigned purpose relating to the MP3 player shield.) https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/mp3-player-shield-hookup/all Step 6: The shield has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on it. You should be able to plug up just about any type of speakers to this. Take your pick. Just make sure that you check the "line out"

documentation on the sparkfun website so you don't draw too much power from the shield and fry it. Here is a link to the information:

https://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Widgets/MP3Trigger/vs10XXan_output.pdf Step 7: Programming the Arduino to control the shield should be fairly easy. Here is a library that provides easy to use interrupt based functions for controlling the shield, so your Arduino can be

monitoring and controlling the "game" while the speakers make obnoxious noises to distract people from their studies: http://www.billporter.info/2012/01/28/sparkfun-mp3-shield-arduino-library/ Step 8: Now that we have covered sound, we have to actually build a "user interface" for the game.

The interface will consist of "N" number of "holes" or "slots" through which players will toss their waste to be recycled, such as a plastic bottle. Each of these holes will need to be able to receive or detect "input" from the user, and probably also give some form of "output" as well to tell players which hole to toss their junk through. Let's start with the "output" and then proceed to the "input" later on. For output, some sort of light producing device would probably work best. There are many options from light bulbs to LED's, but I would suggest something different; EL tape or EL wire. If you use LED's, you have to put in loads of effort to make little holes for them, and probably want many of them to make this thing look professional which ends up becoming a pain to wire up and calculate the required resistance for. Use too many, and you end up needing to use relays or transistors to interface with a higher current circuit, and it spirals out of control. With EL wire or tape, you end up with a "Tron" looking effect, but the light is much smoother and probably appropriate for this user interface. I would recommend using EL tape to line the inside of each hole on the lip. This makes it simple to hide the wiring and provides good visibility, though it requires that the inner lip of each hole must be of the right thickness. However, liquids spilled on the tape becomes a concern in this situation. EL wire could be mounted on the top surface around each hole, as it will bend more appropriately in this setup than EL tape, though it would probably not look as "clean and professional" without a carefully designed lid to the container. Some notes of importance: 1) You should get enough to line the circumference of each hole, so the size of each hole becomes important. It must be large enough for most recycled objects to pass through, such as a large Dasani water bottle. A 6 inch diameter hole would require roughly 50cm of EL tape to line the inner surface. 2) Have some way to cover the EL tape with a durable, transparent, waterproof Ăžlm that will protect the tape from bottles being scraped against it. If you buy this EL tape, it comes with existing connectors on each end, just cut it right in the middle and you have a 50cm long piece of tape, wires already attached, so you would only need to buy four of these for a total of 8 holes. (I would buy an extra just in case, though.): http://www.adafruit.com/products/416 Step 9: You may end up buying tape from somewhere else. If you do, here is a tutorial that explains how to wire the parts:

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Attach-or-Reattach-EL-Tape-Electrolumine/?ALLSTEPS

Step 10: Electric Luminescent (EL) tape runs off of alternating current at a pretty high voltage (though

the power draw is low). So you need an inverter to power this on. Inverters can make noise and heat, but this one looks pretty small, deÞnitely has enough power, and is apparently quiet. We are going to wire up all of the separate pieces of EL tape on the AC end of the inverter, so you only need a single inverter. http://www.adafruit.com/products/448 Step 11: Now this inverter has two wires coming out of it to power the EL tape. That is fantastic if you want to power one piece of tape, or multiple simultaneously, but we want to control "N" number of

pieces of tape independently from one another with a single inverter. This gets tricky, but luckily, there are ways to do it with low effort and cost. We will clearly need some sort of relay to interface the low voltage DC from the Arduino digital outputs with the high voltage AC from the inverter. Whats more, EL wire acts like a capacitor, and cannot be dimmed by meddling with the waveform of the alternating current, so in order to prevent any strange inductance and other forms of witchcraft, we want to use Solid State Relays with Zero Crossover Switching functionality. This means that when the Arduino trips the input with a direct current through one side of the relay, the other side of the relay becomes a closed circuit, but when the Arduino "turns off" its output to "open" the other side of the relay and stop the ßow of current, the relay will wait until the alternating current has completed its current period before opening. Looks like someone out there make a circuit board for Arduinos that already has 8 of these guys wired up to it, saving us a ton of time with a soldering iron and researching the right resistors and diodes to use in a back ßow prevention circuit on each relay input. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/SainSmart-8-Channel-Duemilanove-MEGA2560-MEGA1280/dp/ B006J4G45G/ Step 12: To use this item, it is pretty simple. Here we are assuming we have 8 holes in the top of the recycling bin, so 8 pieces of EL tape. You could instead do 6 holes, and have two pieces of tape for

something else. Whatever the number, I will be assuming you are making use of all 8 relays. Pins 46 through 53 are deÞnitely not used by anything else, so run 8 wires from pins 46 to 53 into the screw connectors for channels 1 through 8 on the relay board. Run a wire from any of the GND pins on the Arduino into the GND screw connector on the relay board (it is in the same "section" of screw connectors as the eight channel connectors, so it is in a "block" of nine total connectors.) Run another wire from the 5V pin and its next-door neighbor, the GND pin, to the GND and VCC screw connectors on the relay board. There you have it, the relay board is properly wired up to the Arduino. Next, wire up the EL tape and inverter to the other side of the relay board. Cut off the connector from the end of the two black wires on the relay board, and strip the wires. Take one of the two wires, and attach 8 wires to it so it looks like a mythological Hydra of wires. Run these wires into one of the two screw connectors at the end of each relay, so that each relay has a wire from this "hydra" going into one side of it. Next, cut off the connector from each piece of EL tape, and strip the wires. Run one wire into the

other side of each relay, and the remaining wires get bunched up and go back into the inverter as a single wire. Done. It should look like this (note that the MP3 Shield is not present):

!

Step 13: Next up is the user interface "input." For this, I would do something with a photo-resistor rather than some mechanism that has to come into contact with the waste that is placed into the recycle bin. Anything that detects waste entering the recycle bin by contacting it requires moving parts, and moving parts break with wear. So instead, perhaps try using photo-resistor and LED pairs, straddling each of the holes. The idea here is that the Arduino checks the voltage drop across the photo-resistor when the game begins, and then is able to detect an object passing in front of the photo-resistor by checking the voltage drop at regular (and rapid) intervals and determining the value again. If the value has deviated more than some threshold, then something probably passed in front of the photodiode which means a bottle went through that hole, blocking some of the light from the LED hitting the photo-resistor. You will have to make sure that the light from each LED hits its photoresistor partner, but is otherwise blocked from hitting any of the other photo-resistors. Note that you may also want to design this physically so that each photo-resistor is relatively shielded from any ambient light in the room, as the light level in the room will vary throughout different times of the day or whether or not the lighting in the room is turned on. Here is a link to some basic LEDs, and another for some photo resistors. Also, you should use a green LED, as photo-resistors are more sensitive to this wavelength of light, and you will need several 10k resistors as well. http://www.adafruit.com/products/161 http://www.adafruit.com/products/300

Power Supply Requirements: -12V DC, 1 - 2 amp, center positive 2.1mm plug.

1) About two inches from the round plug at the end of the power supply, begin to separate the two wires that are joined together by their insulation. You can use a knife to get it started, but they should peel apart on their own. Careful not to strip them.

!

2) Now that you have separated the wires, pick either one and move about two inches from the round plug at the end of the two wires. Wrap two pieces of tape around this one wire to mark it. You should space the two pieces of tape about 1-2 inches apart. The idea here is that when you cut the plug off of the two wires, you will be able to put it back together and remember which of the two wires from the DC adapter goes to which of the other two wires from the plug.

!

3) Once you picked one wire and marked it with two pieces of tape, pull the plug away from the adapter so the wires are taught and snip them in two between the two pieces of tape. You should now have an adapter with a wire, and at the end of it one wire has a piece of tape to distinguish it. You should also have a 2.1mm plug with some wire hanging off it too, and one of those two wires is also marked, so you can put the marked wires and unmarked wires back together.

!

4) The next part may be tricky. Look to see if either of the two wires coming from the DC adapter has a white stripe (sometimes a red stripe). This will be a thin white line running the length of this wire. Its parter that is joined to it (connected by the plastic insulation) will be jet black. So when you split this double wire you should Ăžnd that one wire has some sort of marking, and the other has none. The wire with no markings is always the negative lead. If both wires have no marking, you must use a multimeter. Set the multimeter to read DC voltage, and touch the red wire to one lead from the DC adapter and the black wire to the other lead (with the DC adapter plugged in of course). Be careful while doing this (1 Amp can bite you). If the multimeter says +12V, then the wire from the DC adapter that is connected to the red wire is the positive terminal. If the multimeter says -12V, then the wire from the DC adapter that is connected to the black wire is positive. If it says anything else, you screwed up somewhere.

!

5) Now that you know which of the two wires from the DC adapter is positive, connect the red wire from the blue AC adapter (shown in the EL Tape diagram) to this positive wire and connect its original partner from the plug all together. Twist em up and solder the three wires together, cap 'em off. Now do the same for the other wire, the negative wire from the DC adapter, except match it with its partner from the plug and the black wire from the blue AC inverter. Solder it up and cap it as well.

Next Steps in Developing Arduino GamiĂžcation System: -The coding necessary to implement the gamiĂžcation recycling unit would have to be developed by someone who has had prior experience with developing digital electronic applications.

! !

-Purchase all of the components outlined through website links -Tools Needed: -soldering Iron -electrical wire

! ! !

This was not a viable option for the following reason: -The amount of individuals inhabiting the SCADpad area is too low for the complex recycling system and does not seem like a feasible option for the temporary inhabitants.

-Time Constraints
