Context I am a designer concerned with print based solutions in the fields of branding and publishing design created primarily for the fashion and culture sectors, using a mix of both type and image. I also have a strong interest in copywriting and the importance of communicating successfully through both language and design. Brief or Tasks Penguin Design Award: Create the cover for the novel ‘What a Carve Up!’ by Jonathon Coe.
Your cover design should reflect the richness of Jonathan Coe’s writing to appeal to a contemporary, discerning, literary readership. There are many layers and themes within the book. Read it and discover what the book means to you. Your cover design needs to include all the cover copy as supplied and be designed to the specified design template (B format, 198mm high x 129mm wide, spine 31mm wide). Preparation/Research suggestions The book should be read prior to beginning the design process so that you can fully understand and convey the ideas in the book. Book covers of the same genre should be researched so you are aware of genre conventions and so that you can see how other designers have communicated similar themes.
