Context I am a designer concerned with print based solutions in the fields of branding and publishing design created primarily for the fashion and culture sectors, using a mix of both type and image. I also have a strong interest in copywriting and the importance of communicating successfully through both language and design. Brief or Tasks You have been tasked with both the branding and the design of an exhibition which celebrates the Polka Dot. The event will explore the history of the polka dot as well as its appearance in popular culture, and so the style and design of the event must reflect the classic yet contemporary appeal of the pattern. The audience for the exhibition will be fashion and culture enthusiasts, and so importance must be placed on detail, presentation and finish. This should be achieved through a number of high quality print finishes, such as embossing and foiling. Preparation/Research suggestions Explore fully the history of the polka dot, what it means to designers and how the pattern has been applied throughout different style eras, and how it has featured in and influenced popular culture. Visits to fashion and cultural exhibitions should be undertaken to gain insight into exhibition design and how each event is branded: http://designmuseum.org/exhibitions/2013/paul-smith http://www.manchestergalleries.org/whats-on/exhibitions/index.php?itemID=106 http://ftmlondon.org/ftm-exhibitions/bellville-sassoon/ Features from fashion and culture magazines should be referenced and inform your understanding and design ideas. On Show: Temporary Design of Fairs, Events & Exhibitions by Sandu Cultural Media Exhibition Design by David Dernie Graphic Design for Fashion by Jay Hess and Simone Pasztorek Evidence – for this project students should submit Promotional items: Logo for the event, Posters, banners, invites, tickets, online feature/page/advert banners Exhibition Products: General plan of the exhibition space, Guidebook, small number of exhibition graphics. Development, research and outcomes should be documented on the appropriate blogs.
