The Unknown Great W
e invite you to journey with us this summer through an exciting festival focused on the theme The Great Unknown. Over the course of four weeks, 21 performances, and more than 50 FREE Learning & Engagement Activities, you’ll be surprised and delighted at every turn thanks to brilliant programming by SummerFest Music Director and celebrated pianist Inon Barnatan. With a wide variety of activities, there are endless opportunities to learn something new and unlock your own creativity at SummerFest.
Open Rehearsals illuminate the dedication, diligence, and passion that SummerFest artists put into every performance, while Artist Lounges reveal the deeper inspirations of some of the festival’s talented musicians, authors, and composers.
In our Encounters, we welcome back Alex Ross, music critic at The New Yorker. We’re joined for the first time by Ara Guzelimian, the Artistic and Executive Director of the Ojai Festival in California, who will help recover silenced voices and bring to life the works of Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann.
We also continue one of our most beloved and impactful programs, welcoming seven new Fellowship Artists to the festival. Follow their musical journey and build relationships with these emerging musicians from the Colburn School and The Juilliard School by attending Coaching Workshops, Fellowship Artist Spotlight Encounters, and Musical Preludes.
I look forward to seeing you this summer!

ARTIST LOUNGES
The spark of creativity is unique for every individual. Drawing on the theme “The Great Unknown,” the Artist Lounge is an intimate, in-depth conversation hosted by Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal. Come discover more about these great artists in a warm, intimate setting.
Tuesday, August 1 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room
Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra, faculty member at the Curtis Institute of Music, Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, and winner of the Pro Musicis International Award, violinist Erin Keefe is among the leading chamber musicians of her generation. She has been featured on “Live from Lincoln Center” three times and has won many international competitions.
Tuesday, August 8 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room
In this special Artist Lounge, Leah Rosenthal and attendees will speak with Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the world-renowned Takács
Quartet, to learn more about his life and discuss his latest book, Distant Melodies: Music in Search of Home. An engaging blend of memoir and music history, Distant Melodies explores the changing ideas of home, displacement, and return through the lives and chamber music of four composers. Attendees are encouraged—but not required—to pick up a copy of Distant Melodies from their favorite local bookstore and come prepared to join the conversation.
Tuesday, August 15 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room
Award-Winning violinist Tessa Lark and virtuoso composer/bassist Michael Thurber are a duo unlike any other. The two met years ago as alumni of From The Top, and they began developing their duo collaboration in 2016 after a one-off performance at an event for WXQR in New York City. The two quickly realized how much they had in common as they began to explore their musical influences together, combining Lark’s Kentucky bluegrass with Thurber’s versatile bass.
Tuesday, August 22 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room
Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (The New York Times), clarinetist Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. McGill is a passionate advocate for helping music education reach underserved communities, and works fervently to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in classical music.

The Fellowship Artist Program is one of our longest-running SummerFest traditions. For over 30 years, young artists and ensembles from the program have gone on to lead major orchestras and win international competitions and awards, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Fischoff Competition, and the Banff International String Quartet Competition. They’ve all launched successful careers, and many have returned to the festival as senior musicians.
