MAGIC AND ALCHEMY
SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 · 7:30 PM
THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL
This concert explores the seemingly magical alchemical processes regularly used by Elizabethan composers to turn simple musical material into gold. Composers in Shakespeare’s London transformed their own music or the music of others, in turn inspiring Thomas Adès and Franz Schubert to do the same. This concert includes the U.S. premiere of Adès’ new clarinet quintet, described by the London Times after its world premiere as ‘arresting and magical” and the London Telegraph as “A triumphant premiere from our greatest living composer…”
