n Meningococcal ACWY (Meningitis ACWY) immunisation
n Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunisation
n Flu vaccination (for certain at-risk groups)
n HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccinations
REGISTER WITH A GP
It’s vital that you register with a GP as soon as you arrive in Liverpool. GPs are your first point of call for most health issues. To find a local GP ring Healthwatch on 0300 77 77 007 or go to www.nhs.uk/ service-search/find-a-GP.
FINANCIAL INFORMATION
Tuition Fees
Fees for postgraduate and undergraduate students
2024-25
Classroom based £17,750
Laboratory based £18,250
Remember, your annual tuition fees are payable in full on enrolment, or you can choose to pay in 3 equal instalments minus any internal scholarships. The first instalment is due before Saturday 14 September 2024. For September 2024 students, the second instalment must be paid by Wednesday 15 January 2025 and the third by Tuesday 15 April 2025.
Please note that the university does not accept payments by cash or cheque (including bankers drafts). You must pay via flywire. Visit our tuition fee page to see a how to pay guide. https://www.ljmu. ac.uk/international/thinking-ofapplying/tuition-fees
Opening a UK Bank Account
It is important that you open a bank account as soon as possible to ensure that your money is kept safely.
Please note that LJMU is a cashless university. You must ensure that you have paid your fees via Flywire before your arrival to avoid delays in your enrolment.
We recommend that you bring a pre-paid debit/credit card with you on arrival. All services in the university must be paid for by card. You can apply for online bank accounts with companies such as Monzo or Revolut or you can visit the fair during induction to meet banks located in Liverpool.
Whatever bank you choose, they will probably offer you n a ‘basic bank’ account, which allows you to:
n Pay money directly into your bank account.
n Withdraw your money at a cash point (ATM).
n Pay bills by standing order or direct debit.
n You may also be issued with a cheque book, but again this depends on the bank.
You will need to provide documentation to open your account, such as:
n Identification (ID) in the form of a passport and visa (if you are a non-EU student).
n Verification of your UK and home address.
n Evidence of your student status: you can get this letter by going to my.ljmu. ac.uk and clicking on My Services and then Letter request.
Please check directly with your bank what documentation they will need to open your account.
When you first open your bank account, they may ask you where your funds will be coming from. Your bank may also charge for accepting payments from abroad.
Islamic Banking
If you would like to open a bank account in accordance with Sharia principles, please check your bank’s website for details.
Some mainstream banks do offer accounts that meet these principles and there are a few specialist banks that operate in accordance with them. For more details go to the British Bankers’ Association website: www.bba.org. uk/publication/leaflets/ international-students

Your workload is likely to grow from your previous study experience
You will be given hours of independent studying through reading different sections of books, articles, videos, podcasts, lab hours and experiments. Balancing the social side of university and putting in the independent study hours needed to get a good degree is a skill you will need to develop.
The pace of content can be difficult to adjust to initially
You will be in a new environment, discovering your new way of life (in a new city for many), and on top of this you may be required to grasp complex terminology, which may be difficult to get your head around.

WORKING IN LIVERPOOL
As a student at LJMU, you must be able to financially support yourself without relying on part-time work. You must have the means to cover your fees and living costs for your course duration. While many students want to work while studying, here is some guidance on what is allowed in the UK. Most international students studying with us on a degree level course or above are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week. Your BRP stamp will tell you if there are any restrictions on you working in the UK. If you breach these conditions, you may be fined, detained and/or removed from the UK.
More information about your right to work, finding a job, and applying for a work visa after your studies is available at the UKCISA website: ukcisa.org.uk
National Insurance Numbers
In the UK, everyone working needs a national insurance number, including international and EU students working part-time. This unique number is used to collect national insurance contributions. To get a national insurance number, call the National Insurance Number Helpline at 08001412075 between 8am and 6pm. After calling, you’ll receive a letter for an appointment at a local job centre. GETTING AROUND LIVERPOOL
Liverpool is bursting with iconic landmarks and a rich cultural scene, all made easily accessible with great transport links. Luckily LJMU is based in the heart of Liverpool city centre, so travelling to and from uni is a breeze…
Both Mount Pleasant and City Campus are a 10-minute walk from Lime Street Train Station, Queens Square Bus Station and Ranelagh Street bus stop. We also have cycle racks and bike storage at both
campuses and behind the Student Life Building.
Buses in the city are operated by Stagecoach and Arriva, offering a reliable and convenient mode of transport. A single fare costs just £2 per adult, making it an affordable option for getting around the city. Students can purchase term-time Stagecoach bus passes for £105, which provides unlimited travel during the academic term and offers significant savings compared to regular fares.
The Merseyrail train network connects Chester, the Wirral, Southport, Liverpool, and Liverpool Airport through its comprehensive Wirral and Northern lines, providing a seamless transport link around Merseyside. Merseyrail offers a railcard for £30 per year, which provides a significant discount of 1/3 off rail fares. Additionally, for those who prefer a shorter commitment, weekly rail passes are available starting from £18.20 per week.

Your guide to
We can’t wait for you to get here, but in the meantime get to know every inch of the city and some of the things you might like to do during your time as an LJMU student.
1
CITY CENTRE
Liverpool city centre, known locally as ‘Town’, is like something out of a moviebecause it is! From The Batman to Peaky Blinders our streets make for a stunning backdrop, filled with more Grade 1 listed buildings and national museums and galleries than any UK city outside of London. And with a bevvy of bars, shops and restaurants, it’s more than just a pretty face.
3
ROPEWALKS
Getting the name from its past life as the city’s centre for rope manufacturing, the cobbled area between Duke Street and Bold Street is still considered to be the epicentre for Liverpool’s nightlife and restaurants with it’s central Concert Square a freshers rite of passage.
2
BALTIC TRIANGLE
New York has Brooklyn, London has Shoreditch and Liverpool has the Baltic Triangle. Where else can you find iconic street art, incredible music venues, independent coffee shops and breweries, street food and vintage markets AND a golf course inside a warehouse all in one postcode?
GEORGIAN QUARTER
If you want a cathedralwe’ve got one to spare!
Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter is bookended by the two cathedrals heading up either end of Hope Street. But there’s more to this area than just elegant Georgian architecture. Get lost in its public parks, cram in the culture at its two theatres, or spend a day wining and dining across loads of great places to eat and a traditional English pub scene.
4 5 6 7
KNOWLEDGE QUARTER
They call the top end of town the Knowledge Quarter. Nestled in beside the University of Liverpool, the walkways that link our two universities are a mix of Victorian gothic and ‘60s modernism alongside hi-tech new centres of learning. This is where great things happen.
COMMERCIAL DISTRICT
Liverpool’s business district is filled with ornate banking halls, lofty skyscrapers and eyecatching late 19th century office buildings. Got a head for heights? Try dining at one of our penthouse restaurants or hunt out a secret roof garden.
WATERFRONT
Our iconic Mersey waterfront offers everything from a sing-along in The Beatles Story to a picturesque, if a little windy, riverside stroll. Magnificent mercantile architecture like the famous Liver Building is nestled alongside Turner Prize winning contemporary art - try finding more culture and history per square inch anywhere else!
EAT, DRINK & EXPLORE
Eating out
Fancy a scran?
(That’s ‘meal’ in Scouse!)
BAGELRY
If you’re looking for freshly made coffee, bagels and doughnuts to die for this café is a Chinatown staple – plus it’s vegan and dog friendly –woof!
RUDY’S
Authentic Neapolitan pizza?
Yes please! With three locations spread across the city centre, this North West cornerstone is a little slice of heaven.
MOWGLI
Ask any Liverpool local where they go to for Indian food and most likely they’ll say here. Their tiffin style dishes offer an authentic taste of India for veggies, vegans and meat eaters alike. We’re lucky to call the mastermind behind Mowgli, Nisha Katona, our Chancellor!
Bars and Music
From late nights to live music, get ready to experience the UK’s #1 ‘Best Student City’*
MOTEL
Popular with locals and students alike, come in for a drink and stay all night for the ‘Dive Bar Karaoke’ singing along to indie hits backed up by their live band.
THE BLUE ANGEL (AKA THE RAZ)
A rite of passage - The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan have all played here. Sample a Fat Frog, their signature drink, and dance away to school disco classics.
Arts and Culture
We’re a city with a creative past, present and future
FACT
This art gallery-cinema-hybrid delivers on substance and style. Where else can you find contemporary art nestled alongside blockbusters and art-house film?
THE BLUECOAT
This former school house hosts cutting edge contemporary collections and touring exhibitions – plus a café full of tasty treats.
PLAYHOUSE AND EVERYMAN
From panto to performance art, these local theatres offer accessible tickets to unmissable shows – bravo!
KAZ GARDENS
This outdoor venue doesn’t look like much from the pavement, but step beyond the garden gates into a musical oasis full of good drinks and better vibes.
