I wanted to move away for university, but I wanted it to be easy to get back home if I needed to. Liverpool seemed like the perfect city with great travel links to Belfast. Maya travelled from Belfast to Liverpool to join Liverpool John Moores University
TRAVELLING TO LIVERPOOL FROM NORTHERN IRELAND Liverpool is easily accessible, whether you choose to fly or take the ferry. There are numerous daily and weekly flights departing from both Belfast City and Belfast International Airports, and City of Derry Airport - we are only a 30-minute flight away. When you land at Liverpool John Lennon Airport you can jump on a bus outside the airport terminal. This takes you directly to the city centre in just 20 minutes. Visit the airport website for further details: liverpoolairport.com If you arrive by ferry, you will disembark at Birkenhead Ferry Port (Twelve Quays Ferry Terminal, Birkenhead CH41 1FE) which is on the Wirral peninsula. If you are travelling by car it will then take just 10 minutes to reach Liverpool city centre from Birkenhead, travelling through either one of the two Mersey tunnels. If you are a foot passenger, Hamilton Square railway station is a 15 minute walk away from the ferry terminal, allowing you to complete your journey to Liverpool city centre in just 5 minutes by train. Taxis are also widely available.

It’s an opportunity to gain experience, independence and a new perspective - but don’t just take our word for it! Throughout this handbook you will meet some of our students from Northern Ireland who have made LJMU their home. NORTHERN IRELAND
APPLICANT DAYS
BELFAST, SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2024 We appreciate that travelling to one of our Applicant Days in Liverpool is not always feasible, so we also give you the opportunity to attend an event closer to home, to discover why we are the most popular university in Great Britain for students from Northern Ireland.
I chose LJMU after I attended the Applicant Day in Belfast, and found that it was really homely and felt a friendly atmosphere coming from the staff and students I spoke to there. I also chose LJMU as it has more students from Northern Ireland than any other university so it was going to be a home from home for me. Andrew from County Down BSc (Hons) Computer Science
You don’t need to commit to spending the whole day with us. Simply choose to attend either the morning or the afternoon event. Both events are identical, so you only need to choose the one most convenient to you. These events present a fantastic opportunity for you to discuss your chosen course with academic staff and much, much more. Not sure what to expect? Take a look at our itinerary below and watch this video from last year’s Northern Ireland Applicant Day, recorded by a Film Studies student

our men’s Gaelic Football team also had national success and were crowned Champions at the British championships. Our ‘Play Sport’ programme does exactly what it says on the tin… just turn up and play sport! There is no membership, no commitment, you are not in a league and all you need to do is come and have fun, keep fit and make friends. Can’t see a sport that takes your fancy? Why not start your own! Remember: you can join a sports club even if you have no previous experience of playing the sport. We’re all about trying something new. So go on, give it a go! TUITION FEES AND LOANS You will be charged a tuition fee for each year of your course Tuition fees for 2023/24 have been confirmed as £9,250 per year. This fee is subject to an annual inflationary increase. There is no need to pay your tuition fees up front as eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan for each year of their course. This loan is not means tested which means your household income will not affect your eligibility. Your tuition fee loan will cover all of your tuition fee costs and will be paid direct to LJMU. See page 52 for information on loan repayments.

Applicant Handbook 2024 51
STUDENT LOANS FOR LIVING COSTS (MAINTENANCE LOAN) All figures in this booklet relate to the 2023/24 academic year unless otherwise stated as figures for 2024/25 were unavailable at the time of printing. The amount of funding you will receive for your living costs varies depending on where in the UK you normally live, your household income and if you are living in your parental home or elsewhere while studying. Please only use this information as a guide, more detailed information is available here: studentfinanceni.co.uk
COURSES STARTING IN JANUARY If your course starts in January 2025 you can also apply for your funding from around March 2024 onwards (or as soon as you know what course you are going to study.) Though you will be starting the course in 2025, this is still classed as the 2024/25 year of study by student finance. Please be sure to pick the January start option of your course from the drop down menu when you apply.
In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for money to help towards your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and where you live during term time. As you will see in the table below, you may be entitled to both the Maintenance Loan in addition to the non-repayable Maintenance Grant. n In 2023/24 the maximum amount you will be eligible to receive while studying at LJMU is up to £8,136. You may also qualify for the £500 per year LJMU bursary if your household income is £25,000 per year, or less.
You will pay for your accommodation on dates that coincide with your student maintenance payments, making it easier for you to plan your budget
n Unlike the tuition fee loan which is paid direct to LJMU, this money will be paid into your bank account. It’s paid in three installments and it’s up to you how it is spent – and also how you budget!
TIP: Once you have paid your rent, work out how many weeks until your next loan and grant payment and then you will know approximately how much per week you have to live off.
HOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME AFFECTS STUDENT FUNDING IN 2023/24 ACADEMIC YEAR Funding for living costs is paid to you following an assessment of your household income, this process is called income assessment (or means testing) and if you are under 25 this is normally based on the income of your parents.

LOAN REPAYMENTS Any loans you take out to cover your tuition fees or living costs will be added together into a single loan account. This means that when you start paying back your student loans, you will only make one affordable monthly payment. Your repayment amount is always based on a percentage of your salary, not how much you have borrowed. If your income is over £20,015* your employer will start taking repayments from your salary just like tax and national insurance, and after 25 years any money still owed is written off. The table opposite will give you an idea of what your repayments might look like once you have left university and you’re earning over £20,015.*

OPENING A STUDENT BANK ACCOUNT Shop around for the best bank account for you and, if this is a bank near home, make sure you know how to access the account remotely. It is a good idea to set up online banking so you are in control of your money while you are at university. Make sure you do this before you move away to start your course. Most students say that the interest free overdraft is the most useful thing about their student bank account. There may be times in the year you need this. You can pay it back over the summer if you are working and then use it again in years two and three if you need to. You will normally need to download your acceptance letter from UCAS after confirmation in order to open a student account with the bank.

HAVE YOU STUDIED BEFORE If you have not studied at university before, student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required). Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons. It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. We can clarify exactly how your prior study will impact on your future entitlement and advise you on what steps to take to maximise any funding available.
LJMU BURSARY
STUDENT SUPPORT FUND
LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500.
Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances. LJMU’s Student Support Fund is available to students who find themselves in such a position.
LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you. To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum university tuition fee which is £9,250 for 2024/25.

SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS AND STUDENTS ESTRANGED FROM THEIR FAMILIES SCAN AND
In 1957 John Lennon joined LJMU’s School of Art and Design, and it was to provide the springboard for so many influential aspects of his life: it was where he met Stuart Sutcliffe and would be visited by Paul McCartney. In recognition of the influence the University played in his life, and thanks to the generous support of Yoko Ono, LJMU has set up the John Lennon Imagine Awards to help students who have either been in local authority care or who are estranged from their parents. Eligible students receive a cash bursary of up to £1000 per year of their course, in addition to any funding awarded by your Leaving Care team. We also have a dedicated member of staff here to support students and offer advice on anything from university life and budgeting to student accommodation – and everything in between. LJMU was awarded the NNECL Quality Mark in Spring 2022 in recognition of the enhanced support we offer care experienced students throughout their time at the University, the first University to do so since it’s launch in 2021.
The John Lennon Imagine Awards provide extra support for young people who perhaps need it most. I am delighted to have been able to set up these awards in John’s name… he genuinely would have wanted to have helped these students achieve their personal goals. Yoko Ono
YOUNG ADULT CARERS LJMU is committed to supporting young adult carers and currently works in partnership with Barnardos Young Adult Carers Service in Liverpool. Our dedicated member of staff for young adult carers can provide you with further information and advise you on what support is available.

COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
Whether it’s a new laptop, help with accommodation costs or learning how to drive – how you spend your scholarship money is up to you. We don’t just award our scholarships to straight A students either (though academic ability is important); we are also interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show us that they are hardworking, passionate about something and a success at what they do. So what are you waiting for?
OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP Rewards academic excellence (at least 3 A grades at A2 or equivalent – 144 UCAS points) 85 awards available, £1,000 per year for the duration of your course. We are looking to award an outstanding disabled student who has campaigned or championed inclusion in some way.
For participation in areas such as volunteering, sports, the arts or citizenship; a maximum of 85 awards of £1,000 per year for the duration of your course.
The aim of the Opportunity Scholarship is to enhance diversity, supporting access, participation and outcomes of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who come to LJMU. It would be expected that applicants have participated fully in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes to be eligible and applicants must meet BAME criteria to apply. VICE-CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship has been introduced to recognise the diverse and inspiring nature of the LJMU student community. These high profile scholarships have been developed to reward the success of students that may have had a different and sometimes longer path into Higher Education or have overcome adversity in some way. So, if you are a care leaver, a young adult carer, disabled, (however, see Sir Bert Massie Scholarship), BAME or a mature student, we would love to hear from you.

Student Living Assistant For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep! My advice for new students:
1 Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste.
2 Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier.
3 Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to someone. The staff on reception or our friendly Student Living Assistants are there to help.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BOOKING YOUR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION CONTRACTS Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found. Tenancies commence on Saturday 14 September 2024 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 4 July 2025. Induction week for new students starts on 16 September and teaching begins on Monday 23 September 2024. It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – for example Nursing or Midwifery – you will be given a full calendar year tenancy as standard.
Don’t forget that you don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all cases.
MONEY MATTERS Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off! It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford. *Your guarantor will most likely be a parent or guardian, and they must agree to act in this capacity
If you have any concerns about money and student accommodation, please contact our Accommodation Office: accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk

MATURE STUDENTS
HEALTHCARE STUDENTS
DISABLED STUDENTS
The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations.
Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed! For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Atlantic Point, Glassworks, Marybone 1 or Marybone 3 and share their flat with students on similar courses.
Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. We can also arrange for you to visit our accommodation to check that it will meet your needs. To discuss further contact our Disability Advice Team. disability@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3164/3165.
If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation.
Limited parking is available for students at Atlantic Point. Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing in January 2024 should check ljmu.ac.uk/ accommodation from June 2023 onwards to see what options are available.

MOUNT PLEASANT STUDENTS The Mount Pleasant Campus is home to two Faculties: Business and Law | Arts, Professional and Social Studies
The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in these Faculties. St Luke’s View is an excellent, modern option for students located in the Mount Pleasant campus, which opened at the start of the 2017/18 academic year. Capital Gate and and Albert Court are two good value en-suite options which are suitable for students at either main campus. Capital Gate underwent a full redesign and refurbishment and it reopened in summer 2021. Many rooms at Albert Court were upgraded in summer 2022 and now feature small double beds. Grand Central is the liveliest of all the accommodation options. The vast majority of bedrooms feature private en-suite bathrooms but bedrooms are also available in flats with shared bathrooms at a lower cost. Copperas House is the very newest option available as it opened in summer 2021. It is well located close to the new Student Life Building and is suitable for students at either campus.
Horizon Heights and Hardman House are two of the newest options in this campus and both opened for the frst time in August 2019. All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms. Grenville Street and The Arch are two modern options, located with easy access to the trendy Ropewalks area and the shops and amenities of Liverpool One. Bedrooms in both halls are larger than in many others within this campus and hence represent excellent value.
Agnes Jones House is an excellent choice for students seeking good value accommodation as it features flats with shared bathrooms. See map on inside back cover for accommodation locations.

66 Applicant Handbook 2024
In Liverpool, everything is five minutes away, from the shops to the clubs - there’s always something going on. Whatever you’re into, there’s something for everyone. Liverpool is a very accepting city. A lot of people say they find themselves at university, and here you can be who you are. Mollie BA (Hons) History and English Literature
