Project news: The Railway Archive Group has been meeting regularly and building up a collection of new material. In May, we carried out some field research at the Old Engine Shed which will enable us to create an accurate plan and drawings of the buildings. Some of the new material was displayed during the recent Talyllyn Open Gardens day and it will also be displayed at the Old Railway Station House on Saturday 12th September from 1.00pm until 4.00pm as part of the Brecknock History Week. The next railway archive meeting takes place on Monday 6th July when we will be planning how best to record our material in a digital format. If you have relevant skills or knowledge and would like to be involved in this, please come along to Llanfihangel Talyllyn Community Hall at 7.30pm.

Llangorse Sailing Club - Official Opening of New Clubhouse
Members past and present travelled from across Britain for the official opening of the new Llangorse Sailing Club Clubhouse on Friday June 19th. The wooden two-story clubhouse was funded by donations and loans from members, club savings and grants from Powys County Council, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and Sport Wales. The club Commodore Colin Fletcher announced during the opening ceremony that the club had just been granted Royal Yacht Association Club Championship status, a real bonus just months after being named as a Royal Yacht Association Club of the Year Finalist for 2015. Membership numbers continue to rise at the sailing club and, last year more than 6 thousand hours of voluntary work were carried out on the clubhouse, lake and coaching. The organising, funding, building and opening of the new clubhouse in just 18 months is testament to the hard work of such a flourishing club.

Llangorse Lake Big Swim and Triathlon Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September The Big Swim and Triathlon will be back in 2015 and, once, again we will be helping to raise money for Llangorse Sailing Club. The swim will take place on the afternoon of Saturday September 26th and the triathlon will be held in the morning and early afternoon of Sunday September 27th. Both races will start at the brand new sailing club HQ. Last year we were amazed at the response from competitors and the communities around the lake. The events were only possible thanks to the generosity of the Blackham family and lake businesses and we’re pleased that it helped to give a boost to the local economy. More than 200 people from across the country travelled to Llangorse during the weekend and I’m delighted to say that many of them have already been back for a return visit. Once again, the cyclists will be going through Llangorse, Bwlch and Talgarth and the runners will be using the footpaths and roads around the lake, Llangasty and over the Allt. We will be putting up signs in the week before the event and make sure that all of them are collected in the days after the race. Dropping litter is a penalty offence in triathlon so hopefully no sign of the competitors will be left behind. We’re keen to involve as many local people as possible so please get in touch if you’d like to raise some money for your club or society and are able to provide some marshals for Sunday September 27th. No training is needed and all marshals will be briefed and receive a t-shirt, food and drink plus a safety vest. Last year it was great to see lots of local people helping out; the competitors commented on how helpful and friendly everybody was. We’d also like to see local people taking part in either the swim, triathlon or relay triathlon events. There’s more information about all of the races on our website - www.llangorsetri.com If you’re thinking of entering please get in touch first as we’re able to offer a discounted rate for people living around the lake.

Brecon Foodbank Brecon foodbank launched in July last year and since then we have been able to help 170 adults and children in need. The foodbank is not like a soup kitchen. We are not here to give long term help to people - our role is to give short term assistance to people in crisis and work with other agencies which can help them out of their emergency situation, such as the Red Cross, Social Services, Powys Housing or the Kaleidoscope Project. We don’t just dish out food! When clients come to foodbank they can sit down and have a cup of tea or coffee, a biscuit or three and a chat with our friendly and totally nonjudgemental volunteers. There is no stigma or shame attached to coming into foodbank, we are not concerned with the nature of a person’s crisis - to us they are simply people who have fallen on difficult times are we are here to help. People do not have to queue for a parcel - it’s fairly quiet in Brecon foodbank and our volunteers are often more than happy to have someone to come in to chat to! Now, logistically: we are unable to identify for ourselves people who are genuinely in need of help. We use a system of referral agents - some are listed above - to give vouchers to the clients. Once the client has the voucher they bring it to a foodbank distribution centre. We have two - one is in Bishop Bevan Hall and the other in Llanfaes Church Hall. Here they sit and chat with a volunteer while their food parcel is filled. The food parcels have been determined by a nutrition specialist and give enough food for a balanced diet for three days. The clients usually have up to three vouchers but can be given more if necessary. Hopefully they will have addressed their crisis by this time. The food is tinned and non-perishable such as rice or pasta, cereal, sugar etc. The food is given in carrier bags from local supermarkets so that the person does not feel embarrassed leaving the foodbank. There is no big sign over the door or anything to cause embarrassment to clients! We are in the office on Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 4 and on Friday mornings from 10 to 12. Our phone number is 01874 625461, or email info@brecon.foodbank.org.uk which is monitored more frequently.

an update from Bwlch Village Hall Committee
Since the last issue of the Grapevine we have had solar panels mounted on the roof with the aim of improving energy efficiency, and fund-raising is ongoing in order to extend the heating system and to refurbish the kitchen and toilet facilities. There was good support for our recent “Bingo” evening and we plan to hold more of these in the future. In August there will be a re-run of the “Bwlch with Altitude” Challenge, which will start at the Village Hall. We are hoping for local support for this event, with all proceeds being donated to Mountain Rescue (see pg 11). The Hall is becoming increasingly popular for regular events, and in September a new sewing and quilting class will be starting up – more details to follow.
Bwlch and Cathedine W.I. We are a small, friendly group who meet at Bwlch Village Hall on the first Monday of each month at 7.00 P.M. We are always pleased to welcome visitors (free of charge) who would like to see what we do, and with no obligation. Any new ideas are also welcomed . Our Motto is ‘fun and friendship’ so why not pop along and give it a try?

Perennial vegetables
would really seem to be the way to go. Instead of sowing annuals and waiting anxiously for them to germinate, grow, glut and then bolt, grow perennial vegetables that will come again every year with little or no intervention required. They also make beautiful plants in the vegetable plot and in the borders. If you don’t have the space for artichokes, cardoons and Jerusalem artichokes you could try sorrel which has sweet salad leaves all year round, salsify which has edible roots and beautiful flowers, pictured opposite (strictly biennial but self seeds prolifically), perennial chicory which has summer salad leaves and sky blue clock flowers that open at dawn and close five hours before dusk, or skirret which is an ancient root vegetable similar to carrot or parsnip. As an alternative to annual sown onions, shallots, garlic and spring onions try perennial walking onions (they really do walk, come and see them at the nursery), Welsh onions, Babington leeks and Chinese chives.
Please email articles to: grapevine@ aroundllangorselake.co.uk The next newsletter will be published 20/11/15. Submission deadline is the 10th November 2015.

Graceful hesperantha will flower from late August through to the end of October. Rudbeckia, Helenium and Helianthus with their sunflowers are bright and loud at the end of summer. Asters, or Michaelmas daisies, are also late flowering. We have a beautiful shade loving aster called Eastern Star with tiny white flowers over bright green foliage with black stems.

Drive On is a one hour driving assessment scheme aimed at helping mature drivers in Powys to drive safely for as long as they are fit to do so.
The inevitable effects of ageing could affect sight, hearing, reaction times, and judgement of speed and distance. Fragility increases with age, so injuries tend to be more serious.
