“ The visionary work of completing the master plan over the past ten years is the result of steely determination, patience, superb Board of Trustee leadership, and an incredible community who supported the vision over more than a decade.” Dear Members of the Lamplighter Community: New School Year . . . New Opportunities . . . New Visions! It has been 70 years since the founding of The Lamplighter School by two visionary educators, Natalie Murray and Sandy Swain. I believe that Ms. Murray and Ms. Swain would be pleased to know that the inheritance, their vision for teaching and learning, is being realized each day by a dedicated faculty and staff. I believe they would be happy to know that the farm animals that were part of the original Churchill Way campus are still part of the student experience. And the Hootenannies and square dancing that the founders initiated when the School moved to this campus have continued, and in fact, have grown in magical ways. In this 70th year since the School’s founding, our students have the opportunity to meet those faculty and alumni standard bearers and to hear their stories. If you haven’t seen the archival gallery in the new Alumni & Student Services Center, please make time to see our current display. You will be filled with pride at the history of the School. The pictures and artifacts speak to a thoughtfully planned, well-executed process where students were then, and are now, the centerpiece of all that takes place.

games in the unique pattern garden, climbing on The Mother Tree, and sliding down the super-fast slide. The visionary work of completing the master plan over the past ten years is the result of steely determination, patience, superb Board of Trustee leadership, and an incredible community who supported the vision over more than a decade. Lamplighter has never been a school to rest on past successes. Under the leadership of Board Chair Flauren Fagadau Bender ’90 and Board Vice Chair Margaret Johansen Hirsch ’89, both of whom are alumni of Lamplighter, we continue to think carefully about new opportunities to strengthen our program now and into the future. A planning process is underway, and there will be much more to report later this year. Lastly, we completed our reaccreditation in October. A team of educators from the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) came to Lamplighter to assess the strength of our program and make recommendations for consideration. In January, I will report the details of their visit and findings in breakfast and lunch meetings with the parent community.

In the spring we will celebrate this wonderful school with the unveiling of a history book. The idea for chronicling the history began in earnest three years ago at the urging of former Board Chair Doug MacMahon. A special thank you to alumna and Board Vice Chair Margaret Johansen Hirsch ’89 who spent countless hours planning, writing, and assembling the history book. We are excited to share the completed coffee table-style book later this school year.

These are exciting times for all connected to the Lamplighter community. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I am honored to continue the journey.

Speaking of new visions, the long-awaited Peak Playground and Outdoor Learning Center opened last spring. Since its opening, our students have enjoyed playing on the Gillikin Wondering Worm, zipping along the Dandelion Zip Line In honor of Grace Cook ’98 and Stuart Blaylock ’98, playing

In Lamplighter Spirit,

ON BOARD

“ With our campus now complete, we are poised to think about our future.” Dear Lamplighter Community, It’s been a fabulous start to the school year! Post-pandemic, and with our construction project complete, for the first time in several years this fall has felt like a return to “normal” in the best possible way. The generosity of our community is unmatched. Thanks to you we successfully completed our Bright Future Campaign this past spring, blowing through our $12.5 million goal. Current and alumni families, longtime friends of the School, and, of course, our fabulous Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA), came together to realize the vision for our campus. The Bright Future Campaign allowed us to create additional classrooms for third and fourth grades so that every teacher now has their own space; increase security with a new safe and secure single point of entry; refresh and rework interior spaces to maximize function; and add a Theater Arts Exploration Lab and a totally reimagined Outdoor Learning Center to spark wonder and promote creative play and exploration. A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU for your belief in this project and making it happen! With our campus now complete, we are poised to think about our future. The Board of Trustees’ current focus is developing a new Strategic Plan that will chart our course for the next several years. We engaged consulting group Greenwich Leadership Partners to help guide the process, and over the past year, we have conducted focus groups with parents, exercises with students, and the Powerful Learning Survey you all participated in last spring. We are grateful for your candid feedback that will inform what’s next. Board Vice Chair Margaret Johansen Hirsch ’89 is leading our Strategic Design Team that is working in tandem with the Board and is made up of faculty and staff, alumni, and current and alumni parents. Together, we have reviewed our mission and values and are developing a vision and resulting action steps that aim to ensure the brightest future for our school and our students. We look forward to sharing the new Strategic Plan with you this spring. Our incredible faculty and staff and fabulous families are Lamplighter’s greatest strengths. Thank you, always, for your contributions to our community in every way and for your steadfast commitment to our wonderful school! With gratitude,

Flauren Fagadau Bender ’90 Board Chair LAMPPOST

RETIRING TRUSTEES

ON BOARD

In May, Catherine M. Rose Head of School Joan Buchanan Hill and the Lamplighter Board of Trustees recognized nine Trustees for their generous service to the School. These individuals concluded their terms as Lamplighter Trustees with a collective 60 years of board service. These men and women have given so much to our beloved school through their leadership and support of Lamplighter. We congratulate the following individuals on their retirement from the Lamplighter Board of Trustees.

Allison Bovard Allison Bovard joined the Board of Trustees in May 2017 as an alumni parent to three Lamplighter graduates: Charlie Bovard ’07, Sam Bovard ’11, and Jack Bovard ’16. During her six-year tenure on the Board, she held the leadership position as Chair of the Advancement Committee from 2019 – 2023 and served on the Audit & Risk, Executive, and Governance Committees. As a Trustee, Allison also served as a member of the Bright Future Campaign Committee, and as a member of the Strategic Planning Workgroup for the 2018 Strategic Plan: Enhancing, Strengthening, and Illuminating the Lamplighter Experience. Chief Advancement Officer Elizabeth Selzer shared, “It was a pleasure to work with Allison during her tenure as Advancement Committee Chair. Some of the successes Lamplighter has seen in recent years are a direct result of Allison’s thoughtful leadership. Although she has rotated off the Board of Trustees, Allison remains involved as co-chair of the alumni parent segment of the Lamplighter Fund. Thank you, Allison, for all you have done to advance Lamplighter’s mission.”

Mandy Dake Mandy Dake joined the Board of Trustees in May 2017 as an alumni parent to Thomas Rowley ’16. As a Trustee, Mandy led the Employee Benefits Committee for three years, serving as Chair from 2019 – 2022. During her six years of service on the Board, Mandy also served on the Buildings & Grounds, Executive, Governance, and Strategic Plan Implementation Committees. She was also a member of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee for the 2018 Strategic Plan: Enhancing, Strengthening, and Illuminating the Lamplighter Experience. Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill, Catherine M. Rose Head of School, shared, “Mandy’s experience as an attorney lent itself well to the critical skills needed on our Board. Mandy has an innate ability to ask deep and meaningful questions. She listens intently, gathers information, and helps drive strategic decisions.” Prior to joining the Lamplighter Board of Trustees, Mandy was an active volunteer in the Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA), serving in the leadership role of LPA Board Secretary, and as the Auction Underwriting Chair, and Auction Socials Co-Chair.

Jenney Gillikin Jenney Gillikin joined the Board of Trustees in May 2013 when two of her children, Kate Gillikin ’14 and Alexander Gillikin ’17, were Lamplighter students. Her youngest daughter, Sally Gillikin ’22, later enrolled and also graduated from Lamplighter. As the retiring Trustee with the longest consecutive service (ten years), Jenney gave tirelessly to the School in a variety of capacities including leadership as Chair of the Advancement Committee, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, and Chair of the 2018 Strategic Plan: Enhancing, Strengthening, and Illuminating the Lamplighter Experience. Throughout her ten years of Board service, Jenney served on numerous committees including Executive, Advancement, Campaign Steering, Construction, Head Support and Evaluation, Governance, and Strategic Planning. Most recently, Jenney led efforts on Lamplighter’s playground enhancements and outdoor learning center as part of the Bright Future Campaign. Her leadership in this critical project for the School involved extensive creativity and design, as well as serving as a liaison with Denmark-based Monstrum, producer of Lamplighter’s new unique and hand-crafted playground elements. Fellow Lamplighter Trustee Jennifer Karol reflected, “Jenney is a visionary board member and a parent who dedicated years of service with boundless creativity, reliable authenticity, and an enduring heart for Lamplighter. Her cleverness was the guiding force for the new ‘Playground of Wonder’ where imagination thrives among the embrace of The Mother Tree, the twists and turns of the giant earthworm, and the shouts of glee on the Dandelion Zip Line. Jenney’s insight will foster a sense of wonder that will forever inspire generations of Lamplighter students to come.” Jenney is also a recent recipient of the Lamplighter Spirit Award; she was recognized by the Alumni Association with this honor last spring. ON BOARD Douglas MacMahon For the last decade, Douglas “Doug” MacMahon has given in extraordinary ways to the Lamplighter Board of Trustees. He began serving the Board as a member of the Investment Committee in 2012 before becoming a Trustee in May 2014. These leadership positions included Board Secretary from 2016 - 2018, Chair of the Employee Benefits Committee from 2017 – 2018, Board Vice Chair from 2018 – 2020, and Board Chair from 2020 – 2022. His leadership as Board Chair came at a particularly challenging time, as the School was navigating a global pandemic, launching a comprehensive campaign, and undergoing significant campus construction and renovations. As Immediate Past Board Chair in 2022 – 2023, Doug continued to support all Board Committees as well as committees to support the Bright Future Campaign and associated campus construction. In addition, Doug served on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee for the 2018 Strategic Plan: Enhancing, Strengthening, and Illuminating the Lamplighter Experience. He continues to remain actively involved at Lamplighter as an alumni parent and as a member of the Head Support Committee and the Strategic Design Team for Lamplighter’s next strategic plan. Catherine M. Rose Head of School Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill shared, “Doug’s visionary Board leadership through the pandemic, campaign, and construction were essential for the School. His attention to every detail and deep care for Lamplighter allowed the School to reach success that is atypical of early childhood and elementary schools. I am truly grateful for his care for the Lamplighter community and his tremendous support of school leadership, which distinguished him during his tenure on the Lamplighter Board.” Doug’s wife Catherine MacMahon is a former Artist-in-Residence at Lamplighter, and they are the parents of three Lamplighter alumni: Andrew MacMahon ’19, Carter MacMahon ’19, and Lollie MacMahon ’22.

Bobby Sussman Bobby Sussman joined the Board of Trustees in May 2017 as an alumni parent to Evan Sussman ’13 and Reed Sussman ’16. In addition, Bobby also served on the Buildings & Grounds, Executive, and Investment Committees, and as a member of the Strategic Planning Workgroup for the 2018 Strategic Plan: Enhancing, Strengthening, and Illuminating the Lamplighter Experience. Bobby also served as a key partner to Chief Financial Officer Trey Angel during the School’s construction and renovation project as a result of the Bright Future Campaign. Trey Angel reflected on Bobby’s leadership on the Lamplighter Board, sharing, “Bobby provided thorough, thoughtful leadership for the School’s Finance Committee. His passion for Lamplighter was always evident in his understanding of the School’s finances. He is truly exceptional, and I have enjoyed working with him.”

Pamela Wills-Ward Pamela “Pam” Wills-Ward joined the Board of Trustees in May 2017 as an alumni parent to three Lamplighter graduates: M.J. Ward ’13, Samantha Ward ’15, and Preston Ward ’17. LAMPLIGHTER CELEBRATES

Community Birthday Party for Lamplighter!

2024

Look for an electronic invitation with more details.

The Lamplighter School is celebrating 70 Years of Lighting Lamps!

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, we are commemorating this milestone in a variety of ways. In addition to celebratory signage seen on Inwood Road and throughout our campus, we are including lessons about the School’s history in our all-school Hootenannies. These monthly gatherings provide a fun opportunity to highlight Lamplighter traditions, share stories with our current students, and hear from members of the alumni community. In addition, this year’s All School Program features a theme tied to the 70th anniversary of the School. Each song in the program corresponds to a Lamplighter tradition, including the Pre-K Farmer’s Market, Square Dancing, Innovation, and of course, Hootenannies!

History Book — Coming Soon!

Just over three years ago, Lamplighter embarked on a quest to document the School’s seven-decade history. The idea was sparked by former Board Chair Doug MacMahon, and later spearheaded by current Board Vice Chair Margaret Johansen Hirsch ’89. The process to document Lamplighter’s history began by collecting documents and memorabilia to help build the School’s archives. Many alumni and members of the community came forward with artifacts and information, and, with the help of an archivist, these items were sorted, organized, and catalogued. Many of these precious items are now either displayed on campus, or stored in a secure off-site location. As the archiving process was underway, so too was an exciting project to create a history book of The Lamplighter School. Together with a committee of Lamplighter alumni, Hirsch has brought the project to fruition, and this commemorative book will soon be available to our community! The Lamplighter history book is currently in the publication process and will be released in 2024. Check your email, and follow The Lamplighter School on Instagram and Facebook to learn how you can get a limited-edition copy of this treasured publication.

Lamplighter’s most recent fundraising campaign, Bright Future, resulted in many significant campus enhancements and additions, including the building of the Alumni & Student Services Center. This new addition, which opened in August 2022, provides a safe and secure single point of entry for guests arriving on campus. Inside the Alumni & Student Services Center is an expansive front lobby with an adjacent space dedicated for the School’s historical archives. This space houses dual 22-foot vitrines in a bright, open walkway, offering a museum-like space to display items from the School’s 70-year history. On August 20, Lamplighter debuted a new exhibit in the archival gallery. The display celebrates the School’s 70th anniversary and showcases old photographs and artifacts about the School’s founders, core programs, and educational philosophy. The current display will remain in place throughout the 2023-2024 school year. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop by campus to take a peek at Lamplighter’s fascinating history.

LAMPLIGHTER OPENS

RENOVATED OUTDOOR LEARNING CENTER INSPIRES WONDER AT LAMPLIGHTER

Following a six-month construction and landscaping project, which involved more than three years of planning, Lamplighter was thrilled to open its new outdoor learning center in late spring. Students excitedly explored the new playground after watching its step-bystep development throughout the last school year. The first play, on April 28, was filled with pure exuberance and joy! The School’s new outdoor learning center was designed using the theme of “WONDER,” inspiring students to strengthen their motor skills as well as their imaginations through creative play. The end result of the thoughtfully planned and executed project was made possible through intentional partnerships with New York-based landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) and Denmark-based MONSTRUM playground designers, who custom-built the new play elements for Lamplighter. Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill, Catherine M. Rose Head of School, shares, “The newly designed outdoor learning center enables our school to continue to live out the mission and will ‘ignite the potential of each child as they are engaged in the 12

LAMPPOST

joy of learning through intellectual discovery in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative environment.’” In this issue of LampPost, Lamplighter is excited to announce Peak Playground as the name for the School’s new outdoor learning center. The Peak Playground is named as a result of the generous support of the Rochelle-Wyker family through the MARK Foundation toward Lamplighter’s recent Bright Future Campaign. Lamplighter alumni and sisters Katherine Rochelle Wyker ’98 and Rebecca Rochelle ’00, with their mother Ms. Martha Rochelle, chose the name “Peak Playground” to honor the surname of their maternal grandparents. Both Katherine and Rebecca attended Lamplighter for five years, from 1993 – 1998, before their family relocated to Austin, Texas. They later returned to the Dallas area, and have remained active in the Lamplighter community. Katherine served as a Class Agent for five years and as a member of the Alumni Council for six years, including leadership roles as Secretary from 2014-2015 and President from 2016-2017. Katherine also serves as a member of the Board Advancement Committee. Lamplighter extends immense gratitude to the generous donors to the Bright Future Campaign whose support was invaluable in making the project a

reality. The Peak Playground features playground elements that have been generously underwritten by families within our community. Keep reading to learn more about the new structures and features.

“Lamplighter holds a very special place in my family’s hearts. We frequently reminisce about the nurturing environment, world-class teachers, engaging academics, and unique aspects of the School that make it a rare and wonderful place. My sister and I have many fond memories of celebrating the Halloween Parade, raising chickens, visiting the Barn, and naming the animals, just to name a few! My family and I were honored to participate in the Bright Future Campaign and witness the tremendous growth of the School. Lamplighter provided us with a strong foundation for which we will always be grateful.” — Katherine Rochelle Wyker ’98 (center), pictured with her mother Martha Rochelle, and sister Rebecca Rochelle ’00

COVER STORY

THE MOTHER TREE

The Mother Tree is the iconic structure on the Peak Playground that anchors the outdoor learner center with its vast size and tall stature. The long, curved walkway leads to the hollowed tree where students and teachers alike can gather in a peaceful learning space filled with natural light and fresh air. In fact, a whole class of students easily fits inside for group reading and lessons, or individual journaling and reflection. The Mother Tree is complete with a large trunk with winding staircase, as well as numerous play elements to climb and explore, including dragonflies, spinning logs, discs on ropes, and super-fast slides! One first grade student shared,

“I like The Mother Tree because you can hide in the side holes.”

DANDELION ZIP LINE

In honor of Grace Cook ’98 and Stuart Blaylock ’98 The zip line at Lamplighter has always been a student favorite, as well as a notable part of the Lower School recess experience at the School. Based on its importance to students and uniqueness among school playgrounds, the zip line was a legacy play element that had to be included in the new playground plans. The reimagined Dandelion Zip Line brings joy to our students and offers several enhancements to the on-campus ziplining experience. For example, students are quick to point out that the new zip line is faster than the original zip line. Lower School students consistently comment that the Dandelion Zip Line is not only faster but is also “longer and higher than the old one.” Yet beyond the thrilling experience of flying through the air on a round disc, students explain that the new Dandelion Zip Line offers social benefits as well. One secondgrader notes, “The new zip line has more space for people to hang out while you are waiting for your turn.” The new flower platforms not only offer beautifully designed spaces in the shade but also provide a lot more surface area for students to climb and explore or hang out on while waiting their turn.

“Some days our students swing so high, they WONDER if they can touch the clouds!”

JABBOUR CLOUD SWINGS

The Jabbour Cloud Swings offer an improved swing area for the School’s youngest students. The redesigned structure offers five individual swings, which are lower to the ground, and have more woodchips in the base area relative to the previous swing set. While swings may seem like a solitary activity, they in fact involve a great deal of cooperative play. Kids work together as they learn to swing, helping friends with a gentle push to get started. Early Childhood faculty also explain that the new Cloud Swings allow students to swing on their tummies, an exercise that builds core muscles and body awareness. One Pre-K teacher shared, “The Early Childhood students love the swings, and they are always full at recess.” The theme of WONDER is ever-present in the new Cloud Swings. Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill, Catherine M. Rose Head of School, shares, “Some days our students swing so high, they WONDER if they can touch the clouds!”

PATTERN GARDEN

The Pattern Garden is located in the center of the Peak Playground, offering a peaceful, shaded space that both Early Childhood and Lower School students enjoy during recess time. It also provides an outdoor teaching space for classroom projects and exploration. This fall, Woodworking Teacher Annie Corley took her second grade classes on a “Wood Walk” to identify and record items made of wood. They began their quest in the Pattern Garden, noting the different types of wood and shapes and patterns throughout the garden. In addition, fourth grade students have used the Pattern Garden for journaling as part of their literacy studies. Fourth Grade Literacy Teacher Caroline Finnegan shares that “the peaceful time in nature helps spark ideas and inspire creativity about poetry and drawing.”

Several students express that the Pattern Garden is their favorite part of the new Peak Playground. A Pre-K student shared, “I like hanging out in the Pattern Garden because there are so many different plants.” A first grader agreed, noting, “My favorite part of the new playground is the Pattern Garden because it has lots of plants in it.” Similarly, another Pre-K student expressed that she liked the Pattern Garden because “that’s where the leaves fall down!”

WADDELL EARLY CHILDHOOD VILLAGE

With the Waddell Early Childhood Village, Lamplighter students now enjoy a reimagined outdoor play space designed with our youngest (and smallest) learners in mind. The cluster of playhouses, sand play areas, figure-eight trike path with traffic signals, and Jabbour Cloud Swings offer new ways for students to play and explore. This dedicated area for Pre-K and Kindergarten students fosters physical and social-emotional development. A returning Pre-K student shared his impressions of the new play areas for Early Childhood students, explaining, “I really like the sandbox, the little houses, and the bikes.” Other Pre-K students agree and simply say, “We like it all!”

“I really like the sandbox, the little houses, and the bikes.” PLAYGROUND HOUSES

Featuring the Urso Playground House The playground houses provide endless opportunities for imaginative and creative play. Some of the playhouses are situated in the green space, while others are surrounded by sand and flanked by a mini-boardwalk. The green, yellow, and blue playhouses bring vibrance to the outdoor play areas and are always busy with student activity during recess. One Pre-K teacher shared, “It’s all aesthetically beautiful and I like that everything is made of wood.” Pre-K students are constantly in and out of the houses, exploring with their classmates and continuously developing new games and stories centered around the structures. One student shared, “We like to play Mario in the playhouses.” As part of the Bright Future Campaign, donors could name a playhouse. Thank you, Urso family, for naming the Urso Playground House.

GILLIKIN WONDERING WORM

The Gillikin Wondering Worm offers an imaginative play space for children to invent, wonder, and learn. The pair of structures in the signature pink color anchor the Early Childhood area of the Peak Playground. The “head” of the worm is filled with opportunities to climb, stretch, balance, and explore, with an interior “obstacle course,” and exterior slides, tuffets, and reeds. The “tail” of the worm also offers climbing on ropes, reeds, and tuffets, but also offers full seating for a classroom to use for outdoor lessons, or relaxing reading time. Many Pre-K students identify the Wondering Worm as their favorite part of the new playground, as it offers endless fun for climbing and sliding. One Pre-K student shared, “I love the worm because you can go any way to slide down.”

“I love the worm because you can go any way to slide down.”

Although the Wondering Worm was designed and created with Early Childhood students in mind, Lamplighter’s older Lower School students have been equally intrigued by and eager to play on these structures. In fact, Lamplighter Seniors Matthew Gordon ’24 and Ellery Stehel ’24 felt so strongly about using the Worm that they co-wrote a letter to Catherine M. Rose Head of School Dr. Joan Buchanan Hill, Chief Operations Officer Marynell Murphy, and Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning – Lower School Stephen Scott asking them to consider letting first through fourth grade students play on the Wondering Worm. The letter was thoughtfully written, and included strong arguments to support their position on the request. In addition, the letter was signed by almost all members of the Lamplighter Class of 2024, showing a strong bond among the Senior class, as well as a unified position on the matter. Fortunately for our Lower School students, Dr. Hill, Ms. Murphy, and Mr. Scott took the letter seriously, contemplated the proposal, and eventually agreed to allow Lower School students to play on the Wondering Worm. Today, our Lower School students are able to explore the Wondering Worm for their own games and play during recess periods when Early Childhood students are not outside. Student feedback can be so powerful!

ENHANCED LEGACY PLAYGROUND ELEMENTS

In addition to the new play structures designed by MONSTRUM, the Peak Playground includes long-time student favorites: the hill, the tunnel, and soccer field. Each of these elements was enhanced through the new construction, but preserved both the function and charm of these notable recess play spaces. The iconic playground hill now includes two hills: one large hill, and one smaller hill. The tunnel under the hill remained intact, but was upgraded with new blue playhouse frames at each entry point. The Owen Family Soccer Field, a favorite recess spot for older Lower School students, was re-turfed during the summer and completed in July. New goal posts were added to complete the full upgrade of the field. The Peak Playground also provides additional green spaces where students can hang out when they aren’t climbing, swinging, running, or ziplining. These spaces include the circular reading grove adjacent to the Early Childhood area of the building, as well as a shaded area that resembles an outdoor living room. Hand-crafted wooden furniture sits between the Dandelion Zip Line and The Mother Tree and brings even more beauty to the exquisitely designed outdoor learning environment.

EXPLORE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Lamplighter Partners with ISAS to Offer AI Professional Development Series

This fall, The Lamplighter School partnered with the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) to provide professional development to the faculty and staff on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). ISAS organized a series of webinars for its member schools to share information and trends about AI and its impact on education. All members of the Lamplighter faculty and staff took part in the webinar series. This professional development program was taught by Luyen Chou, an educator and technology leader. Chou has extensive experience in emerging technologies, as well as a background in working in independent schools. His full bio can be viewed at right. → The first event in the series focused on AI and Education Technology, highlighting the megatrends in education and what they mean for independent schools. Chou explained the concept of artificial intelligence and why it matters for education. The goal was to help demystify the complex topic of AI so educators, faculty, and staff can have a better understanding of how AI will shape the future of teaching and learning. In addition to discussing the opportunities, risks, and challenges of AI, Chou provided tips for using AI in classroom learning. The second part of the AI professional development series centered around the theme of Augmenting Teaching in an Age of AI. This session focused on using AI tools to enhance curriculum development, create integration opportunities, and embed learning science into classroom practice. 18

LAMPPOST

After taking part in the initial sessions of the webinar series, some Lamplighter faculty members were inspired to discover how AI technology could be beneficial in their classrooms. Pre-K Teacher Debbie Herskovitz, who was part of the Academic Technology Team for the ISAS Reaccreditation Self Study during the 2022-2023 school year, has begun exploring ways in which the AI tool ChatGPT can enhance her teaching. Herskovitz has used the tool to contemplate ideas for classroom activities related to a particular theme. For example, by asking the tool for ideas for Pre-K lessons about empathy, she learned new suggestions on this topic for children’s books, questions to spark class discussions, prompts for drawing exercises, new classroom materials, take-home activities, and even puppet dramatizations to explain the concept. While the ChatGPT tool is certainly not a replacement for the extensive knowledge and experience of our faculty at Lamplighter, Herskovitz explained, “It has helped confirm that we are on track and on target, and even provided some new ideas for classroom lessons and activities.” Similarly, Fourth Grade Literacy Teacher Nafisa Rahman has also explored ways in which AI can facilitate class projects and enhance learning. In preparation for the Senior Opera in the spring, Rahman has been working with her fourth grade students to study the elements of a story, including the protagonist, antagonist, conflict, characters, and setting. Using the framework of the story elements, students generated ideas and themes they wanted to include in their Senior Opera.

After students developed ideas for their opera in brainstorming sessions, Rahman entered the students’ inputs into ChatGPT to generate a full story line. Students eagerly watched the SmartBoard as ChatGPT created a story using their own themes. Rahman shared, “The kids were fascinated by seeing the story come together. Yet, this was only a starting point. The students quickly learned that not all parts of the story worked, and they had to use the generated story as a starting point, not the final product.” Additionally, Rahman noted that the tool was helpful to class discussions about what works and what doesn’t work in a story. ChatGPT framed the storyline, but students quickly learned that the editing and revising process is critical to developing a cohesive story. Lower School Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning Stephen Scott noted, “The kids are getting good experience with seeing how ChatGPT is helpful in the creative process, but it definitely can’t do all the work for you.” The final session in the webinar series covered the topic of AI and Student Assessment. This session examined how new AI tools can be used to rethink approaches to student assessment at all grade levels. As the participants in the ISAS community learned together in the series, it was noted that the landscape of AI changes daily; therefore, this is a topic that will certainly evolve as the technology and its impact progress.

“We will always have Sils.” by Susan Regan Donnenfield

2023 Mattingly Fund for Excellence in Education Recipient Nurse Susan Regan Donnenfield The summer of 2023 was full of many wonderful memories for my family and me because I received this year’s Mattingly Award. Lamplighter is so blessed to be part of Ms. Pat Mattingly’s legacy that continues through her generous gift. Traveling to the serene village of Sils Maria, Switzerland, in the Engadin Valley was the fulfillment of returning to a favorite destination of my parents and paternal grandparents. Going with my younger son Jonah and daughter Regan made the trip even more meaningful and memorable. Our trip started in Zurich, where we spent three days sightseeing and visiting cousins and long-time family friends whom my family has known since the pre-World War II days in Munich, Germany. Indeed, the ties between our families extend back nearly 100 years! In the 1930s, my father and his parents were forced to leave behind their home and belongings when they emigrated to the United States as Hitler came to power. It was years later when they returned to Europe for familiar Swiss vacations, specifically Sils Maria, where my parents went for over 30 years each summer, staying at the magnificent Hotel Waldhaus. Truly, it was one of their happy places. When thinking about a Mattingly trip proposal, I immediately thought of Sils Maria. It was incredibly emotional to be selected. With this family history as background information, our summer trip proceeded with a breathtaking three-hour 22

LAMPPOST

train ride from Zurich to St. Moritz, where staff from The Waldhaus picked us up for the ten-minute ride to Sils Maria. It is a Heidi-like hamlet of about 700 people with a few shops and small homes that dot the countryside. Mostly Europeans visit Sils, and the locals speak a dialect of German called Swiss German as well as a rare language, Romansh, which only 60,000 people in the world speak. That’s less than 0.001% of the globe! Hiking is a major attraction in the summer with Val Fex and Lake Sils being the most popular for day hikes. A highlight of our trip was the cable car ride to Piz Corvatsch, a mountain in the snowcapped Bernina Range of the Alps, which has an elevation of 11,322 feet. The air was crisp, rarefied, and accompanied by a quiet that only comes from being above the clouds. Each day, we hiked in a different direction, stopping for lunch at mountainside cafes. As high season did not start until the end of July, there were few tourists. The lush green landscape was sprinkled with typical Swiss chalets, dairy cows sporting the traditional large bells, and horsedrawn carriages to transport climbers. Regan, Jonah, and I stopped frequently on our trails to take in the moments of togetherness, breathe the pure air, and verbalize the blessings of being together in Sils. Experiencing my parents’ legacy and sharing it with my children was a closeness we will always hold dear. As I told them, “We will always have Sils.”

MATTINGLY FUND

The Mattingly Fund for Excellence in Education was established in 2000 in honor of former Head of School Pat Mattingly, an advocate for lifelong learning. The annual award assists members of the faculty and staff to grow personally and professionally, enabling them to enhance the contributions they make to Lamplighter.

RICHARD LOUV

The Dolores Evans Speaker Series welcomed Richard Louv, recipient of the Audubon Medal and author of ten books, including Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder and Vitamin N. Since 2002, Lamplighter has hosted close to 50 events in the School’s signature Dolores Evans Speaker Series. Each year, the Series brings nationally recognized authors, thought leaders, and motivational speakers to our campus for the benefit of area parents and educators. This year’s Series kicked off in September as we welcomed renowned author Richard Louv to Lamplighter. Louv is the recipient of the Audubon Medal for outstanding achievement in the field of conservation and environmental protection, as well as the author of ten books. His notable works include Last Child in the Woods, Vitamin N, and The Nature Principle. Louv’s talk at Lamplighter this fall underscored the importance of spending time in nature and its impact on physical, mental, and cognitive health. At this year’s event on September 19, the audience of nearly 200 guests included area parents and educators, as well as members of local nature and conservancy organizations including the Trinity River Audubon Center and Trinity Park Conservancy. Louv’s opening remarks recounted his own upbringing, which, not surprisingly, included spending a significant amount of his childhood in woods with unstructured play. As an adult, the former columnist for the San Diego Tribune pursued research in the 1970s and 1980s about the disconnect between people and nature. This research led to the publishing of Last Child in the Woods, Louv’s most recognizable work. In this book, Louv highlights the powerful impact nature has on our physical, mental, and cognitive wellbeing. This work also introduced the concept of nature-deficit disorder, a condition that has led some pediatricians to write prescriptions for nature, both as prevention and therapy for children lacking this connection. 24

LAMPPOST

Since the publishing of Last Child in the Woods, Louv noted that the awareness about the powerful connection between nature and our physical, mental, and cognitive health has skyrocketed in America; yet, this does not necessarily mean that we are acting on it and making a concerted effort to increase our connection to nature. One way Louv is striving to tackle this conundrum is through his involvement in the Children and Nature Network, an organization whose mission is “to increase equitable access to nature so that children— and the natural word—can thrive.” Louv is co-founder and Chair Emeritus of the organization, and he encouraged the audience at Lamplighter to utilize the resources it offers, including connecting with families locally to enjoy nature activities together. Throughout his talk, Louv continued to share additional research findings underscoring the importance of spending time in nature, both for children and for adults. Some of these findings included: N Kids who play in natural play spaces are far more likely to invent their own games. N Kids who play in natural play spaces, versus asphalt, are more likely to invite other kids who don’t look like them to play. N Teachers are far less likely to burn out if they can get outside during the workday. During the presentation, Louv also commended Lamplighter for its programming and campus design that he observed during his visit to the School. He noted that the campus

Each year, Lamplighter hosts one or two events to bring thought leaders to our campus as part of the series. Now in its 22nd year, the Series continues to inspire and educate our community through engaging and timely topics. Most events in the Dolores Evans Speaker Series include book signing opportunities with our guests.

Save the Date

Dr. Beck Weathers “Nature is a part of our health, cognition, and ability to learn.” elements, including the most recent updates with the playground and outdoor learning center, offer wonderful ways for our students to experience nature, connect with animals, and take part in environmental education. Given Louv’s expertise in the area of nature’s impact on health, particularly among youth, it was encouraging to hear his words of support for our school. Louv concluded his talk with a reading of an excerpt of his new book, which explores how we pay attention in nature. His soothing words brought a sense of calm to the audience in Cook Gym, as the rain from the stormy Dallas evening poured outside and created a gentle hum from nature.

While the evening was both educational and inspirational, it was also bittersweet as it was the first event in the Dolores Evans Speaker Series without Dolores Evans herself. Dolores passed away in June of this year, and she had always been a regular attendee of her namesake speaker series. A tribute to Dolores Evans is included on page 41 of this LampPost.

DOOLEY AUTHOR SERIES

Erik Jonsson Media Center Hosts Erika Lynne Jones and Oge Mora Lamplighter welcomed two special guests to campus this fall as part of the Dooley Author Series. The Series, now in its 12th year, is presented by the Erik Jonsson Media Center and brings award-winning and notable children’s authors and illustrators to our school for visits with our students and faculty. This year, Lamplighter hosted children’s book author/illustrator Erika Lynne Jones and children’s book author/illustrator Oge Mora.

ERIKA LYNNE JONES

OGE MORA

In mid-September, Dallas-based children’s book author/ illustrator Erika Lynne Jones visited with Kindergarten and Transitional First Grade (T1) students at Lamplighter. Jones is the illustrator of The Loud Librarian, a story about being true to yourself, and Black Girls: A Celebration of You. During her visit with Kindergarten and T1, she read The Loud Librarian, and invited students to participate in the story by adding sound effects at certain parts of the story. Jones also led the students through a drawing exercise. Students followed along with clipboards in hand, learning how to illustrate Penelope, the main character of The Loud Librarian.

Through her works, Jones enjoys creating quirky characters and stories that affirm and celebrate cultures. Her creative mission is to show every child they are worthy of good and deserve positive representations of themselves in literature. During her presentation at Lamplighter, she reminded students that “It’s okay to be you,” and that “being you is how you make a difference.”

Lamplighter welcomed award-winning author and illustrator Oge Mora to campus in early November as the second guest in the 2023-2024 Dooley Author Series. Mora is a collage artist and storyteller, and is the recipient of the Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Medal for her book Thank You, Omu! and the Texas Bluebonnet Award for her book The Oldest Student. Mora discussed story and illustration with all Pre-K through fourth grade students during three sessions throughout her day at Lamplighter. During each presentation, she shared her personal background and early start with books, as well as her process for creating, illustrating, and publishing a book. Students were fascinated by the fact that it often takes two years (or longer) to publish a book! Mora’s key message that she left with students is that “Stories are everywhere.” She encouraged students to “open your eyes to the stories that are happening all around us.” Mora is a native of Columbus, Ohio, and now resides in Providence, Rhode Island.

DOCTOR WHO KIDS PUBLISH ARTICLE Congratulations to the Lamplighter Doctor Who Kids! The long-running Who is Doctor Who? NightLight class at Lamplighter taught by Drama Teacher Mr. Jeff Peck continues to find new ways to engage students in the creative process. During the Fall 2022 semester, the Doctor Who Kids worked together to create content for the Doctor Who Annual, a publication that is produced by a fan group. The publication’s format is reminiscent of a yearbook and features stories related to the show and its characters. Under the guidance of Mr. Peck, Lamplighter students in the Doctor Who NightLight class wrote lessons for the Doctor and submitted illustrations for an article. The article submitted by Lamplighter was accepted into the publication, and was released in January of this year. The Doctor Who after-school enrichment class explores favorite episodes of the decades-long British television series, Doctor Who. In addition to watching and writing episode reviews, the Who Kids explore fan art, develop content for their Twitter feed, @WhoKidsLL, and connect via Zoom with actors and producers of the show. Peck’s deep knowledge of the show, as well as his infectious enthusiasm, has created a strong following of passionate and loyal Doctor Who enthusiats at Lamplighter. A copy of the Doctor Who Annual that features the Lamplighter article can be found in the Erik Jonsson Media Center.

LAMPLIGHTER GIVES BACK COMMUNITY OUTREACH SUPPORTED BY THE LPA This fall, the Community Outreach Committee of the Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA) hosted two drives benefitting Family Gateway, a homeless shelter in Dallas for families. The first initiative took place in mid-September and was a coordinated effort to collect new or gently used Halloween costumes. Over a two-week period, the LPA collected 174 Halloween costumes, which were shared with Family Gateway for their annual Boo Bash event. This event allows children served by Family Gateway to enjoy the many fun traditions associated with Halloween, such as dressing up in costumes. Before the costumes were donated to the organization, several Lower School students in the Before Care program at Lamplighter volunteered to help label and sort the costumes so that the donated items were well organized. The second community outreach initiative this fall involved a laundry detergent pod drive in conjunction with Lamplighter’s annual Donuts with Dads event. This year’s Donuts with Dads event took place on Friday, September 29, and offered a fun way to build friendships while enjoying breakfast treats. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the LPA collected 5,859 laundry pods at the event! Lamplighter extends a special thank you to this year’s LPA Community Outreach Co-Chairs: Staci Cohen, Courtney Hodges, and Jacqueline Siegel Nelson ’94.

Dolores Evans 1931 - 2023

Over the summer, family and friends in the Lamplighter community celebrated the life of Dolores Evans, who passed away peacefully on June 15, 2023, at the age of 92. Dolores was a longtime member of the Lamplighter community, having been affiliated with the School for more than six decades. As a nod to a place that meant so much to her, Dolores’ memorial service was held at The Lamplighter School. Dolores joined The Lamplighter School as a staff member in 1967 and worked at the School until her retirement in 2001. Throughout her 34-year tenure at the School, she did any and every job that was needed. Dolores was the bookkeeper, secretary, receptionist, and eventually served as Lamplighter’s first Director of Admission, a position she held for 25 years. In 2002, the Dolores Evans Speaker Series was established in her honor, and she regularly attended events in her namesake speaker series, sitting proudly in the front row. Dolores was honored by the Alumni Association as a recipient of the Lamplighter Spirit Award in 2022. She was also the grandparent of two Lamplighter alumni, Cole Evans ’04 and Nash Evans ’09.

Barney T. Young 1934 - 2023

On May 2, 2023, The Lamplighter School lost a beloved member of our community, Life Trustee Barney Young. Barney was a longtime supporter of education and independent schools in Dallas, and Lamplighter was incredibly fortunate to be a beneficiary of his guidance and support. For more than five decades, Barney and his wife Sarah Taylor Young were strong supporters of The Lamplighter School. They first joined the Lamplighter community in the 1960s when their children, Jay T. Young ’68, Sarah Young Miller ’71, and Serena Young Ritch ’74, enrolled at the School. Many years later, their granddaughter, Emma Thornton Young Gudis ’02, also attended Lamplighter. Barney became a member of the Lamplighter Board of Trustees in 1976 and served as Board Chair from 1983 - 1986. He was named as a Life Trustee in 2006. As a Trustee, Barney guided the School through several decades with his legal expertise and passion for education. He also served as Board Chair and as a Life Trustee of The Hockaday School and St. Mark’s School of Texas.

We regret any omissions from the acknowledgements. To honor a member of our community in a future LampPost magazine, please send an email to advancement@thelamplighterschool.org.

2022-2023 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Flauren Fagadau Bender ’90, Chair Margaret Johansen Hirsch ’89, Vice Chair Elizabeth Cullum Helfrich ’90, Secretary Bobby Sussman, Treasurer

2022-2023 IMPACT REPORT Dear Lamplighter Community Members, The 2022-2023 school year celebrated the joy of childhood as we renewed traditions and returned to a full calendar of events and activities that we hold dear. With our theme of Better Together, we shared moments like Hootenannies, the Halloween picnic, and a Bright Future Campaign ribbon-cutting ceremony. There are so many people to thank this year. In addition to Trustees, Life Trustees, current and former parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and alumni, our students get a special thank you from me this year. They found temporary play spaces and endured longer walks to some of their classes, but all I saw were smiles. They were Better Together with their friends and teachers. Lamplighter alumni had an opportunity to grow the Alumni Faculty Salary Support Endowed Fund as part of the Bright Future Campaign. As gifts came in, we celebrated families that walked these halls years before. There were 16 alumni who had not supported Lamplighter in recent years, or were completely new donors! This is an incredible statistic for a school whose alumni move on to their next school at the age of 10. The Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA) hosted an incredible Auction that invited everyone to Come Together to celebrate Lamplighter. Thanks to the LPA’s hard work and support of our faculty, staff, and students throughout the year. Their ongoing commitment and dedication to Lamplighter is without measure. Lamplighter’s Bright Future Campaign surpassed its goal of $12.5 million. This campaign launched just ahead of a global pandemic and carried on without pause, so I have no doubt that Lamplighter’s future is bright. The names on the following pages represent so much more than financial gifts. These individuals, families, foundations, and friends have invested in The Lamplighter School in a way that ensures we will continue to be Better Together in our Bright Future. With sincerest thanks,

Elizabeth L. Selzer Chief Advancement Officer
