DAVE HAKKENS- PHONEBLOCKS
The idea is to develop a phone that is customizable and adaptable to evolving situations. This is to address the huge amount of electronic waste by developing a system of upgrading of individual components of the phones. This also allows consumers to customize their phones according to their needs and have a wider selection of components
BIG - SUPERKILEN
This urban park is to consolidate the diverse cultures of the neighbourhood. It managed to develop a strong identity on a local and global scale by involving the inhabitants within the design process. Through this users are able to take ownership of this project. Each section has a distinct collection of objects from over 60 cultures
SNOHETTA - RAINDEER PAVILION
The intention of this pavilion was to be a rigid outer shell and have an organic core which mirrors the curves of its surrounding Dovre Mountains. The building is used as an observation and education centre by the Wild Reindeer Foundation.
ROSY (the Ballerina)
The pavilion is to become a tool to activate public space in the city and also catalyze the conversation about improving the quality of life. Used to host free public events, the pavilion needs to be something cool, playful and iconic that can be a physical representation of what we stand for.

WEEK 4_Intervention
Title: Foodies by the Yarra Audience: Tourist / Families / Youths / Homeless Location(s): Enterprize Park Time/Date: 6pm / 30th March 2014 Duration: 5 hours
This intervention started with the idea of questioning if different demographics could be brought together through the common topic of food. This is to develop a common ground of interaction between different demographics of the city and the possible translation of this into my design. The users perception of safety along the Yarra and activities to activate the Yarra was the secondary layer to this experimentation. To test this, the intervention was to be carried out across the span of afternoon to night to observe the change of users of the space. Data will also be obtained through active participation from the community on their opinions of this urban space along the Yarra.
ATTRACTION NODE
INHABITING SPACE
The intervention sought to involve all demographics of the community and obtain their opinions of the space. It also tries to develop a lingering space which promotes interactions between social classes of the community. There are a series of elements proposed to engage with the community. A free BBQ was to attract users of the space together through food. Interactive boards provide an outlet for people to share their opinions and participate. The milk crates and fairy lights seek to explore how people engage with a pre-defined space and promote interactions between different demographics.
INTERACTIVE BOARD
People responded well to the interactive boards as the community wanted to be involved and contribute to a better built environment. There was a strong engagement from all demographics who wanted to express their opinions on the usage of the space. The BBQ on the other hand attracted a specific set of people of the homeless and youth groups. They would engage with and claim these spaces that we set up. However due the lack of food variety and assurance of food quality, tourist and older demographics were not as open to lingering in this space.
The intervention was able to engage with a wide array of users of the space, most of the people were open to be involved and give their opinion on how to improve this space. This shows and encouraging fact that the urban community is looking for an outlet to engage with for the betterment of the built environment. There is a high potential to develop an urban community in this space. From the survey, it was interesting to find that there is a strong interest in developing an urban garden for the community, as responses stated that it adds to the natural aspect of the Yarra and could bring together a community.

WEEK 6_Concept Exploration
INITIAL IDEA The concept is to reactivate the space under the Flinders Street viaduct and to reconnect the Yarra with Melbourne city. This space was chosen due to its untapped historical significance and its potential of mediating the relationship between the city and the Yarra. CULINARY COMMUNITY This space will be reactivated by creating an urban community that is united through the culinary arts. There is a wide range of demographics that frequents this space and exist a potential to bring them together. The crowd funding initiative will tap into the celebrated food culture of Melbourne and develop a food center in which users can engage with a cycle of food as a community.
PROGRAMS The three main programs for this project would be the culinary school, a food hub and an urban garden. The culinary school will focus to activate the space as a campus in the day, while the kitchen space can be transformed into a not for profit restaurant at night which serves any excess food. The food hub seeks to become a platform for exchange of food culture and experiences, it is also to support pop up store initiatives which take advantage of the professional kitchen resources over the weekends. The urban garden is to supplement these functions and develop a community through collective contributions on the garden.
FORM FINDING The form finding concept was derived through its site and historical contexts, the intention was the break up the existing grids and separation of spaces.
CROWD FUNDING This project would be broken down into stages
REWARDS Rewards for this project are based on fostering a community and to retain their participation

WEEK 8_Mid Semester
This project seeks to develop an urban community which is united through Melbourne’s food culture and to activate the Yarra River along the Flinders Street viaduct. With the proliferation of Melbourne Farmers Markets, community gardens and food cooperatives across Melbourne, there is a growing culture for a sustainable culinary lifestyle. This trend focuses on a holistic lifecycle of food from its natural production, to skilled preparation and the communal consumption of food. These community initiatives however only occur in outer regions of Melbourne, this project seeks to tap into the demand for a food hub which supports a growing food culture. The site is located under the Flinders Street viaduct and onto Enterprize Park. According to the City of Melbourne’s Urban Design strategy, the city seeks to enhance the Yarra River as a recreational and civic spine through developing activity centres along it. This space was chosen due to its current untapped potential of forming a direct linkage between the city and the Yarra. The site is also rich with historical significance as a turning basin for the landing of the first settlers in Melbourne and has informed my design in both its form and its expected texture and materiality.

This project seeks to re-establish Melbourne city’s connection with the Yarra. It aims to redevelop an underutilized space along the Flinders Street viaduct and tap into its potential to mediate the relationship between the city and the Yarra. The proposal is a cultural and civic building entitled the Yarra Food Hub. The proposal aims to become a place for the sustainable production, preparation, consumption and education of the food system. It seeks to develop an urban community, which is united in advancing the sustainable food culture in Melbourne. The food hub also seeks to engage with the diverse range of users across the day through its mixed used programs of culinary school, community centre, an urban garden and a floating theater. The architectural design of this project is site specific and draws reference from the historical context of the site, which was once the turning basin of Melbourne’s shipping wharf. The massing of the new building mainly sits under the existing viaduct and has been divided up to create pedestrian connections, views to the Yarra and a variety of different scaled public space. A new funding model that uses crowd funding has been explored for this project. This crowd funding campaign engages with different user groups ranging from Melbourne city residents, the professional culinary community and sustainable food groups. Through crowd funding, this project seeks to cultivate an invested community, which will run and maintain the Yarra Food Hub.
