JEWEL CHANGI, SINGAPORE BENOY, 2016 - CURRENT

Jewel Changi Airport is a mixed-use retail complex, designed to combine the tropical landscape of Singapore with a luxury retail environment. The project is approximately 130,000 sqm and is constructed on the surface car park site fronting Terminal 1 at Changi Airport. The complex aims to offer a range of new facilities merging the needs of airport operations, indoor gardens and leisure attractions, retail offerings and hotel facilities, all under one roof. I was part of the lead ID Design team for Jewel. Being involved with this project since the initial tender documentation stage all the way to construction and mockup testing.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCT During Tender Documentation, I was in charge of producing the toilet and lift lobby tender design drawings

During the Construction stage, I was part of the shopdrawing and mockup coordination team for the ID designs throughout Jewel. We were in charge of coordinating construction drawings between consultants, clients and contractors.

The brief was to introduce a luxury stone finish to the retail space within Jewel, while enahncing the interior gardenscape with a rich grain character. The overall concept introduced by Benoy was to use the flooring to complement the strong elliptical shape of Jewel. The flooring would be used to lead the circulation of users around the circular Retail spaces. Jewel was first segmented into various zones based on its functions. The main areas were for Aviation, Retail, Garden and Transitions. Different flooring strategies were then introduced to enhance the functions of each area.

SERPEGGIANTE APPROVED SELECTION

FLOORING STUDY Through a series of explorations on possible stone options, the main flooring body for Jewel was chosen to be Seperggiante, a Marble from Xiamen, China. Serpeggiante is a warm bodied stone with soft tonalities of striations that run parallel to the tile. The first task was to study he relationship between the circulation of space, bonding pattern of the tiles and grain direction of the stone to complement the user flow along the Retail area. The setting out of the tiles at 45 degrees from the North Border tile was chosen to be the main flow of Jewel Further layers of elements were also progressively introduced to rationalise the overall flooring strategy. Elements such as the introduction of border tiles to rationalise tile setouts and radial bands to enable the change of bonding directions between each zone. The relationships of these bands were following the relationships to its context such as the void edges, lobby entrances and structural elements.

FLOORING MOCK-UP A series of mock-ups were carried out to test the bonding pattern and the grain direction in relation to the Retail shopfront of Jewel. Border tiles was introduced to develop a clear division between public corridors and shop interior finishes. The Serpeggiante stones were also brought into Ion Orchard to test the stone’s tonality against interior lighting and shopfront exposure. The lighting specifications were calibrated to enhance the flooring tonalities.

STONE DRYLAYS The procurement process then proceeded with drylays. These were carried out by the contractor and stone supplier to examine the quality of stones and overall tonalities coming from the quarries. There were new characteristics of the Serpeggiante stone during the drylay process. A new flooring strategy was devised for stones of differing grades to be sorted and arranged according to hierarchy of spaces within Jewel.

TERMINAL1 EXTENSION FLOORING PROJECT: COMPANY:

Terminal 1 Extension (T1E) was the arrival hall for airline passengers alighting at Terminal 1. It was to be the first touch point for travelers entering from the airside to Jewel.

The main intention of the flooring was to break up the scale of the 5,000sqm Arrival hall at Terminal 1. The concept was to introduce features within the flooring pattern, reducing the large expanse to a more human scale. New Kashmir was chosen to be the flooring for the Arrival Hall. The first series of studies were to explore the location of these flooring inserts. The strategy of these insets were to highlight critical touch points of the Arrival Hall, the density of these inserts would increase and fade out based on this relationship.

FLOORING STUDY The next series of studies were to test the flooring insert strategy at a one to one scale. The relationship between the density of flooring inserts against the elements of the Arrival hall was a key factor. Next the materiality and the size of the flooring inserts were also tested within the New Kashmir flooring. Quartzite was chosen to be inset within the New Kashmir tiles as it suited the aesthetic from both intimate and large scales. Construction then proceeded with further drylays with the contractor. This was to examine the quality and characteristics of New Kasmir coming from the quarries. A series of accepted samples were established to set the benchmark for construction.

LEVEL 2

The brief of the counters were to be the functional touch points within Jewel, facilitating various Retail and Aviation activities. Each counter has a customized range of activities and has to work with its unique context. There were a wide range of functions for these counters, ranging from informational counters to transaction counters for attractions. The main concept explored was the idea of pure geometric form in space. This tied the counters back to the strong sense of geometric relationships within Jewel. On a larger scale, contextual relationships were the main focus as form and materiality were of heavy emphasis. These elements were studied against sight lines, neighboring context and circulation of the areas. As these counters approached a much more intimate scale, new factors such as section profiles, ergonomics of space and types of materials became a lot more relevant to the design.

Throughout the design process, contextual considerations were crucial as cues from materiality, overall geometry, circulation and functions of each space were key details. As the counters went through the construction process, new layers of details were included and refined with the users. Various material test were also carried out to match the intended aesthetic while ensuring buildability on site.

The brief for the Level 5D Nursing Room was to both integrate the nature of the roof top gardenscape and be a sanctuary for mothers to nurse their infants. The delicate relationship between public and private space of the Nursing Room was crucial to making it work within this public context. The concept of alcoves was developed to provide shelter and privacy for the mothers to care for their infants. These alcoves were complemented with selective openings and a trellis layer to bring in nature and sunlight while creating screens for privacy. With the use elements such as screens, line of sights and materiality, a private nurturing space surrounded in nature was developed.

HANOI DIPLOMATIC DISTRICT, HANOI BENOY, JUN - OCT 2016

This project was a design proposal and feasibility study for Hancorp Development in Hanoi. The brief was to develop a mixed used development of retail and high end apartments with an aesthetic that pushes the boundaries of high end living in Hanoi. The main concept for this project was to enhance the existing context by promoting circulation, views and green coverage of the site. A ribbon facade was introduced to develop a relationship between its mixed use functions of retail and residential. The semi-open retail spaces was to attract on ground flow from the main public transport routes, and also introduce a mixture indoor and outdoor experience to suit the climate of Hanoi.

NUH KENT RIDGE WING, SINGAPORE ARCHLAB ARCHITECTS, APR - DEC 2015

The brief for the Operation Theatre at National University Hospital Singapore was to expand an existing ward space to house 3 new Orthopedic Operating Theatres. Spatial planning within the existing site was the key consideration, as circulation between both the front of house and back of house needed to work concurrently. Inputs from various stakeholders on working clearances, operational workflows and clean zones were key design factors in this space.

The brief for CARE Fertility Center at Singapore General Hospital was to increase the capacity of patients and to also provide for a training facility. Space planning at various scales were the main considerations of this design. The main concept for the design was on the hierarchy of spaces and how clients would progress through the stages of fertility treatment. Next was looking at the working procedures, mainly between the Fertility Lab, Procedure Rooms and Administrative support. The CARE facility had a heavy emphasis on its interior spaces. Due to its tight site constraints and sensitive fertility equipment, ergonomics of space and customized detailing became a crucial elements in the design.
