WELCOME TO BLISS LIFE MAGAZINE…WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE HERE!
Spring is a time to clean house, embrace change, and harness new energy. Spring is the promise that everything can begin again, a time to let go of the past. The air is fresher and the sun shines brighter. Seeds take root and begin to reveal their beautiful blooms. The safety of the cocoon unravels and the beautiful butterfly emerges. And, in spring…Love is in the air. For Bliss Life Magazine, the timing could not be more apropos. Bliss Life Magazine is based in beautiful Reno-Tahoe, Nevada, one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, and we are in our 4th year. We began as Bliss Babe Magazine, a local women’s lifestyle print magazine, and have earned the respect of readers by delivering engaging, honest, high quality content and truly connecting with the local community. Our advertisers value the way we tell the stories behind their businesses, building trust and credibility with their customers. We have a unique, genuine perspective on the good in humanity, and in a world that is becoming increasingly more divided on social, political, and environmental issues. We are being called to act in a way that brings people together. We believe that “us vs. them” mentality is doing more harm than good in society at large. Therefore, right before your eyes, and with your support, Bliss Babe Magazine is evolving and rebranding as Bliss Life Media and Bliss Life Magazine. As a women owned and operated business, women’s empowerment will always be a top priority, but why not focus on the power of humanity and the goodness in all? We believe that people still want a tangible source of trusted information that delivers honest, quality content and tells unique, interesting, personal stories that inspire people to engage and connect. Therefore, we will continue in print as Bliss Life Magazine while we grow our digital presence with the launch of our new website, BlissLifeMag.com. You’ll see our social media following @BlissLifeMagazine come alive as we build exciting new relationships and explore new multimedia opportunities. We are thrilled to welcome two new celebrity editors to #TeamBliss, Nikki Lund and Adriane Schwartz, whose contributions you’ll see throughout the pages before you. All of this being said, our heart is in the Reno-Tahoe region and we believe in its amazing growth potential. We seek to put Reno-Tahoe on the map as a new hub for style, culture, entertainment, wellness, business, community, amazing food and libations…and all things BLISS! We love thinking outside of the box, inspiring perception shift, getting to the core of humanity, sharing stories of perseverance, empowerment, and overcoming adversity. We believe that telling stories changes lives and changing lives can change the world…we invite you to join us!

If you can imagine it, you can make it a part of your special day. The rules of tradition have changed or been thrown out! Many brides are taking an organic minimalist approach. Last Year was a year of monumental unions. From the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wedding to the debutante nuptials of Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, as well as Chiara Ferragni’s Italian extravaganza with Fedez, it’s been the year of non-stop “It-Girl” nuptials. While we are not all celebrities, women often dream of their fairytale wedding; the beautiful bouquet, the flawless diamond, a romantic setting draped in endless roses, delectable hors d’oeuvres, a swoon worthy groom, and of course, an exquisite dress! It’s a day where she can be a queen and the entire world stops as she shines like a star. Whether you’re into classic or prefer a modern twist, there is something for everyone in the 2019 wedding trends.

FASHION Back To Classic – While modern, edgy wedding décor and dresses are certainly on the rise, there are plenty of brides who want to bring back traditional design elements. Celebrity bridal couture designer Madeline Gardener of Morilee by Madeline Gardner certainly has her finger on the pulse of wedding trends: “The modern Bride is embracing the return to glamorous opulence. My gowns are full of intricate detail, like handmade embroidery and embellishments of beading and threedimensional floral appliqués. The intricate work that has been passed down through generations is in itself timeless. Make a beautiful statement wearing the most memorable gown!” morilee.com Boho Chic – Couples are becoming more price conscious with a casual approach on their wedding days. But, that doesn’t mean you have to substitute the style. The no shoes, beach wavy hair, natural trend is hot in 2019. “Speechless designs trend-driven dresses for the free-spirited, fierce and flirty woman. We create dresses that fit your every social moment. We celebrate our passion for innovation by designing styles that make you feel confident for every occasion,” says Speechless Creative Director, Mari Forge. #LeaveThemSpeechless now at @SpeechlessDresses Custom Couples – The new trend is couples wanting to treat themselves to custom designed tuxedos and dresses. “I recently made a custom tux for Scotty McCreery, I have been working with him and his celeb stylist, Jennifer Kemp, since his American Idol win. We’re noticing a big trend with brides and grooms wanting tuxedos, shirts, and dresses made especially for them. There seems to be a shift away from the bride’s gown being the star of the show, and more interest in both the groom and bride having a beautiful custom look,” said Aaron McGill, owner and head tailor of Only One tailoring and master tailor of Fior Bespoke of Nashville. onlyonetailoring.com

Brides today have more of a free spirit with style than ever before – they feel they can break tradition and show their personality. – Lisa Gastineau
Bold Bridal Bling – Simplicity in jewelry in on the decline as brides opt for big statement earrings, colorful stones, and mixed metals. Lisa Gastineau, President and Designer of Tres Glam fine jewelry is finding that “brides today have more of a free spirit with style than ever before. They feel they can break tradition and show their personality.”
CEREMONY & RECEPTION Unique Entertainment – Many couples are seeking to entertain their guests with outside-the-box entertainment. World renowned psychic medium Rebecca Fearing says, “For some of my clients’ wedding celebrations they hire me to bring a fun flare and entertain their guests. For others, it’s a special way to connect with their loved ones who have crossed over to the other side such as a parent, grandparent, sibling, or close friend and include them in their most magical day.” rebeccafearing.com Art Is All The Rage – Today’s couples want that WOW factor immediately upon arrival, so they’ve replaced the traditional engagement photo with art. What could be more avant-garde than your self-portrait done by celebrity Pop-Artist Sham Ibriham who has painted everyone from Katy Perry to Gretchen Rossi. Shampopart@gmail.com. If your taste is more classic and you want something whimsical that’s portrayed with delicate color nuances and sensuous texture try a impressionistic approach with your wedding art. “It’s the impressions of the memory you see in your mind, and this is a very meaningful way to capture the nuptial moment.” says Carolyn Kramer. CarolynKramer.com Statement Cakes – Dessert displays with an assortment of treats dominated the wedding scene in 2018, but more and more couples are trending back towards splurging on one big focal statement cake instead. “There’s something so iconic about a wedding cake, so why not go big and bold!” says owner and Creative Director of Helena Wirth Cakes, Anne Ayunan. Royal Flowers – It will be fun to see how Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding will inspire 2019 nuptials. A big trend is large installations over the doors. “Couples are going for the bigger is better approach with stunning floral arrangements fit for the royals, it’s amazing how much more meaningful your wedding becomes when you add your own flair,” says How 2 Girl’s Courtney Sixx, how2girl.com. That being said, the opposite is true when it comes to bouquets. “I think we will see more bridal bouquets that are smaller, delicate and relaxed in style as opposed to the larger ones we’ve seen in the past. I think couples will be putting more thought into the language of flowers and what the flowers mean and represent.” says top Hollywood Florist, Francesca Blumenfeld of Francesca Blume Floral Artistry. francescablume.com
GIFTS Mindful Beauty Gifting – As opposed to the typical welcome gift waiting behind a hotel check-in desk, you will see couples sending information digitally and then offering a “beauty goodie bag” assembly station at a welcome party. Naked Soul Beauty founder, Tobey Ann Terry, advises the bride to “infuse peace and passion into her process of creating a blissful wedding journey by gifting her Goddess Tribe with spirit and connection through a luxurious facial mask assembly station that will deepen their bond while nourishing their skin.” nakedsoulbeauty.com Hypno-Bride – This year Brides have seen the light. As we all know, weddings cost a pretty penny, so to up the ante on creating an unforgettable experience for their guests, 2019 savvy brides are hiring hypnotists. Celebrity hypnotist Kimberly Friedmutter can guarantee not only a blissfully relaxed bride but also calmer guests. She has hypnotized brides to rid them of pre-wedding jitters and has even sat down with both sides of the family to ensure harmony on their special day. Her new book, Subconscious Power: Use Your Inner Mind To Create The Life You Have Always Wanted, to be released April 9th, is a wonderful gift for any bride-to-be and their family! Luxe Velvet – Whether it’s table linens at the wedding or bridal shower gifts, velvet is on-trend and better than ever! According to Dawn Fields, Vice President of Design & Product Development at Amrapur Overseas, “The perfect engagement or bridal shower gift in 2019 is beautiful bedding and bath towels. It is the perfect way for newlyweds to start their lives together… comfy towels and luxe sheets!” amrapur.com m B l i ssL i feM ag.com 11

COLLAGEN FACTS: Your Body, At Its Best
• Collagen is the vital building block of our bodies including skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. • Our bodies cannot synthesize enough collagen on their own and the modern diet contains minimal collagen. • Collagen makes up 30% of the proteins in the living body and 70% of the protein that makes up the skin. Our bodies naturally produce collagen, however…. • Collagen production declines after age 25 by about 1-2% per year • During Menopause years, collagen declines 2-4% per year • By age 40, the body’s ability to produce collagen decreases by 25% • By age 60, it has decreased by over 50% This leads to various signs of aging – wrinkling skin, brittle bones/nails/hair, joint pain, etc. Beauty Collagen to the Rescue!

PIERCING the Veil HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT BODY JEWELRY TO COMPLETE YOUR BRIDAL LOOK By Angela Watson | Photos by Anicia Beckwith
In modern pop culture, many choose to get body piercings for pure esthetics or adornment. However, body piercings have historically been related to very significant rituals in many cultures. As they relate to weddings and marriage, piercings still carry cultural significance in many Indian, African, and Middle Eastern cultures. In Indian culture, the Solah Shringar – literally 16 decorations – of the bride includes the wearing of the nose ring, usually of gold or pearl decorations, as part of the devotion to the goddess Lakshmi, who is the model of the perfect wife, and of beauty and fertility. It is still common practice in the Berber and Bedouin peoples of North Africa and the Middle East for the husband to give the bride a gold nose ring when they are married. In South Africa, lip piercings are often inserted by a Makololo tribal woman’s husband-to-be as a betrothal, or engagement, rite six months before marriage, and the size of the plate correlates to her dowry. As a bride-to-be, whether for cultural significance or simply for beauty, your body piercings should not be overlooked as you plan every perfect detail of this most special occasion. A professional piercing studio, like Black Hole Body Piercing, has just what you need to curate the look of your dreams. With so many beautiful choices in today’s body jewelry market, here are a few things to consider when looking for jewelry to complete your perfect bridal look: • Gold comes in 3 colors; white, yellow, and rose and has a softer tone than other metals. • Genuine stones sparkle more than synthetic and will look amazing in photos. • A professional piercer can help you with everything from design to the perfect fit, so avoid shopping online and making costly mistakes. • If you’ll want something in custom colors or designs, allow a minimum of 4 months for the piece to be handmade. It may take a while but it’ll be gorgeous. • A professional studio will have the largest selection of pieces that are biocompatible and safe for you to wear for long periods of time and they should come with a manufacturer’s warranty. • If you want a new piercing, be sure to allow for sufficient time to heal so that it looks great in photos. Above all else, have fun with it! Your choice in body jewelry, as with all of the pre-wedding decisions you make, should be thoughtful and showcase your own personal style. WHAT TO WEAR to a Wedding? THREE GO-TO PIECES YOUR CLOSET NEEDS By Britton Murdock Nunn | Photos courtesy of illa illa
Wedding season is upon us and with it comes the question every woman asks themselves, “What should I wear?” The answer to this question is never easy as each wedding is different. Some invitations will include a dress code but if the invitation doesn’t specify, it is up to you as the guest to use your best judgement. A few things to consider that should give some direction: time of day, venue, landscape, bride and groom personality, etc. Once you have gathered as many clues as possible you start to get an idea of what will be appropriate. A rule of thumb to remember is—it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. With that being said, here are three pieces that every closet needs and are guaranteed to get you through those no dress code weddings! #1 Colored Cocktail Dress This is a piece for summer weddings. A pop of color is fun and lively. Find a color that compliments your skin tone and hair, and also your personality. Bright colors are trending right now—just remember you don’t want to be so bright that you upstage the bride. Jewel tones are a good, classy option too.

#2 Black Dress This can either be floor length or cocktail style. Black is always in style, looks great on everyone, and works for all seasons. There are an unlimited number of options out there. Find a cut and style that is flattering for you. One of the great things about a black dress is you can get a ton of use out of it without people noticing or remembering that you’ve worn it before! If you have worn it before, try changing up your look with different shoes, jewelry, hair, and makeup. You can achieve vastly different looks with the same core piece, so don’t be afraid to get creative.
#3 Jumpsuit Thank goodness that the jumpsuit trend is in full force! It gives women another option when attending weddings! A jumpsuit is a chic and classy look so don’t be afraid to wear one and stand out. Like the black dress, there are many different options, so choosing the jumpsuit that best fits your body type is very important. Most jumpsuits are fitted around the waist with a loose, wide leg bottom. If you are someone who is tall, a long wide flare bottom just above floor length is the most flattering. If you are someone who is shorter, the style for you would be wearing heels and a cropped tapered bottom. When you take the time to find an outfit that you feel confident wearing you are more likely to enjoy yourself at the wedding. Invest in yourself and your wardrobe and add these three pieces. You will eliminate stress and save time with goto outfits hanging in your closet for every type of wedding season and style! m

CONGRATULATIONS on your marriage! SO‌WHEN ARE YOU HAVING KIDS? By Leslie McCarroll | Photos courtesy of The Nevada Center for Reproductive Medicine Sponsored by The Nevada Center for Reproductive Medicine
Fashion and Beauty aside, one of the most common wedding trends of the 21st century as compared to previous generations is couples waiting longer to get married. In the 1950s, the average American was 20 years old at first marriage as compared to 27 years old in 2019. One might argue that there are many benefits to marrying at a later age, but what if you want to have children? Bliss Life Publisher, Leslie McCarroll, met with Dr. Scott Whitten, Medical Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility at The Nevada Center for Reproductive Medicine, to shoot straight on some scenarios that may become more prevalent as couples choose to start their families later in life. Q: I am a 45 year old newlywed and have married the love of my life. I have never had children of my own. Can we test the quality and quantity of my eggs? If my eggs are not suitable what are my options? A: Over time, changes in the ovaries and eggs can affect your reproductive potential. After age 35 it becomes more difficult to conceive and there is also a higher rate of miscarriage. We do have several methods that can assess egg quantity but unfortunately there isn’t any test available to assess egg quality. At age 45 we expect the quality of many of the eggs to be low. If it is discovered that a woman doesn’t have enough quality eggs to create a pregnancy then there are alternative options to consider that can overcome this limitation, such as egg or embryo donation. Q: I am 35, recently married, and my new spouse and I want to start a family, but I had my tubes tied 4 years ago. Can it be reversed? Is my age a problem? A: If you have had a tubal ligation then there are two options to help you overcome it. First would be a tubal reversal surgery to restore the function of the tubes. Typically, the pregnancy success rate in women under 35 is 70 to 80 percent, while the rate for women over 40 is 30 to 40 percent. Another option is to use in vitro fertilization (IVF) which bypasses the tubes and provides for higher success rates. Once we consider factors such as age, type of surgery performed, and number of children desired, then the appropriate treatment would be recommended. Q: Are any of your reproductive services covered under insurance? A: Fortunately, more and more insurance companies are recognizing infertility as a disease and now providing coverage. For those without coverage, our office provides resources for 20
BLISS LIFE | Ap r i l / M a y 2019
discounts, packages, and financing to help couples pursue the desired treatment. Q: I am 32 and my new husband had a vasectomy a few years ago. What are the success rates of vasectomy reversal? A: A vasectomy is a procedure used on men to interrupt the vas deferens, or tubing that carries sperm out into the ejaculate. In order to obtain sperm to start your family, there are three options to consider. The first option, vasectomy reversal, offers the chance of natural conception but success rates vary greatly depending on many different factors such as type of and time since the original procedure was performed. The second option is to obtain a small amount of sperm from your husband with a short office procedure. This sperm can then be used to fertilize your eggs during an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle to create embryos. Under 35 years of age, success rates are expected to be high. And lastly, for men who do not want to undergo any procedures, a couple can use donor sperm from a sperm bank. This sperm would not contain the genetics of your spouse. Q: My husband is concerned about the health of his sperm. What testing is available to see if we can expect any challenges with conception or the health of our child? A: Fortunately, the testing for men is quite simple. We begin with a semen analysis of his ejaculate that is collected by masturbation. If there are any abnormalities observed then a thorough evaluation of his history, medications, hormones, exposures, and lifestyle are considered. Q: My husband and I are a recently married gay couple. How do we go about finding an egg/surrogate to start a family? A: Although the process may seem intimidating and complex, we can simplify it. Besides the sperm, there are two other requirements that are needed to accomplish a healthy pregnancy; eggs and a uterus to carry the pregnancy. Eggs are easily obtained through the process of egg donation by a healthy young woman. These eggs will then be fertilized with the sperm to create embryos. Once the embryos are created then the search for a uterus begins. This person is called a gestational carrier. After thorough screening, a contract is drawn up between the carrier and the intended parents. Once in place, we can proceed with transferring an embryo to her uterus for the pregnancy. At delivery the child is taken home by the intended parents.

BIG CHEFS Big Gala A FOODIE FANTASY AND SO MUCH MORE | APRIL 13, 2019 [GRAND SIERRA RESORT] By Mel Ulloa
Sarah & Nadia - A Life Saving Sisterhood Inspires a Career and a Cause What makes a worthy dessert? Many will say presentation, flavor, complexity, or plating, but Chef Sarah Anstett, a former Little Sister, knows the true key is the story behind it. Little Sister Sarah was matched with her Big Sister Nadia when she was just 14 years old; they have been matched for nearly a decade. A lot has changed over the years, but through ups and downs they have managed to prioritize their relationship and dedication to each other and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada (BBBSNN). “The journey that led me to Big Brothers Big Sisters was painful to say the least,” explained Sarah. “Before I joined this organization, I did not have a positive female figure to seek guidance from. My parents were separated and I was not able to maintain a relationship with my mother and half-sister. I was depressed and closed off from the world. I did not want to wake up in the morning and I would cry myself to sleep almost every night. After being matched, everything changed, and it has been nothing short of life-saving.” Sarah and Nadia’s story is just one example of the amazing work Big Brothers Big Sisters performs in northern Nevada. to support their mentoring programs. In a unique twist on the traditional gala format, Big Chefs Big Gala features not just an exciting live, more than 200-item silent auction, but also a delicious dessert auction. Sarah will participate in the dessert auction for the second year in a row. She has worked for Liberty, Chez Louie, and Coffeebar and is now a pastry chef at Roxy at the Eldorado. Sarah discovered her culinary talent and passion at age 14 when she and her Big Sister started Kittens in the Kitchen, a baking service for friends and family. “It was my first time creating a dessert for the Gala,” she said of her 2018 contribution, “and I pulled inspiration from my Big Sister Nadia. I had made a chocolate cake for her college graduation and wanted to take that concept and elevate it. She inspires me all the time.” “The dessert auction is the most fun part to me of the whole night,” said Mel Ulloa, Marketing & PR Manager of BBBSNN. “These chefs’ creations are so artistic and our guests really respond to them. Last year Sarah’s cake sold for $2,750!” Big Chefs Big Gala is not just about the desserts - it’s a night for all food lovers. If you like food, this is the event for you. Thirty-five of our area’s top culinary chefs will serve up a fivecourse meal delicious enough to make any foodie’s mouth water. The night kicks off with appetizers from Chef Dawn
Tavares of Cherry Bomb Catering and Chefs Heather & Stuart Mundy of The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows among others, plus a beer truck from the Tap Wagon. This year features two local cocktail stations from Tahoe Blue Vodka and Ten Torr Distillery. BBBSNN guarantees their chefs will have you drooling. Just take Sarah’s 2018 creation of a delectable chocolate chiffon cake with layers of chocolate ganache and crunch cocoa nibs, spread with a velvety caramel frosting, and topped with a cascade of bourbon chocolate icing. This was a 3-tiered cake finished with edible 24-carat gold leaf. Sarah already has ideas about how to take her dessert to the next level this year, but won’t reveal much until the big night. “This year’s inspiration is Spring – change and growth and what is to come. Those are the only details I will give for now,” she said. All the funds raised from Big Chefs Big Gala will stay right here in our community to match children facing economic and social adversity with caring adult mentors. Last year Big Brothers Big Sisters served more than 600 children in northern Nevada. Big Chefs Big Gala will be held on Saturday, April 13 at the Grand Sierra Resort and tickets are available now at Bbbsnn.org. m

CREATIVE EVENTS and Wondrous Weddings AT THE NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART By Natasha Bourlin | Photos courtesy of The Nevada Museum of Art
Long a destination known for hosting spectacular events, the Nevada Museum of Art (NMA) is a go-to for locals and visitors alike. Within the architecturally striking structure are multiple spaces fitting for nearly any festivity. Its crowning jewel, however, is the extraordinary 4,800-square-foot Nightingale Sky Room boasting sweeping vistas of both the mountains and cityscape, plus a multitude of options for all occasions. Up to 1,000 revelers can span the NMA’s expansive and artistically driven area for corporate events, meetings, conferences or parties…including the biggest day of all for many, weddings. Designing the Sky Room, award-winning architect Will Bruder was creatively inspired by the nearby Black Rock Desert and the many social events the world-renowned venue hosts. Voted venue of the year in 2018 by the Reno Tahoe Chapter of the National Association of Catering & Events (NACE), Nevada Museum of Art Director of Special Events and Sales Nisha Hallert is the visionary behind the many extraordinary happenings the Sky Room sets the stage for. With more than 17 years of event planning expertise, Reno-native Hallert knows how to throw a party. Using her lengthy event design training and experience in floral design, she’s brought to life everything from intimate gatherings and 600-person galas to VIP events for the likes of former President Bill Clinton. For the past seven years, her talents have been an enormous asset to the museum and the many happenings it hosts there, including receptions for international artists and high-end parties for Nevada’s state officials. In 2014, she and her team even won a national NACE award for Best Social Event Production of the Year. “I can see from the beginning to the end what everything is going to look, feel and taste like,” Hallert shares. “I like to tell stories through my events...Because of the canvas of the museum and all the galleries we have, we can tell different stories for each client and really get to know them.” At the NMA, anything is possible. No two events will ever be alike either, as, thanks to the regularly rotating exhibits, the background is constantly changing. With their expert planning team and multitude of resources, every aspect is thoroughly thought out and taken care of, whether its being held in the Sky Room or throughout the entire museum.

Nisha Hallert has more than 17 years’ industry experience planning 600-person galas, rooftop weddings, intimate exclusive dinners, events for VIPs such as Former President Bill Clinton, and more. She currently works as director of facilities & special events and sales at the Nevada Museum of Art and serves as immediate past president of the Reno/ Tahoe chapter of the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE). In 2014, Hallert and her team were awarded a national NACE award for the Best Social Event Production of the Year. In 2018, NACE named Nevada Museum of Art the Venue of the Year.

Weddings in particular are inimitable at the NMA. Planning one can simultaneously be the most exciting and stressful time of their lives for the betrothed. Here, Hallert and her team can alleviate much of the planning anxiety. During a Sky Room ceremony, food is catered by Liberty Food and Wine Exchange with renowned Chef Mark Estee at the helm, the couple merely needing to share their wishes while Estee and Hallert bring them to delectable fruition. State-of-the-art audio/visual capabilities and exquisite, themed décor create the mood for guests. From the Sky Room, an idyllic backdrop offers picturesque photo opportunities, particularly at sunset. The room can hold up to 250 people when seated and offers both an indoor atrium and outdoor area, so weather is never a concern. Skilled local vendors are engaged and coordinated by Hallert’s team for lighting, decorations and linens. A solid wood dance floor Hallert dubs “a masterpiece” is installed, adding another beautiful visual element to the room’s exceptional acoustics. Museum event planners specialize in infusing a sentimental piece of the couple into the celebration. Say the couple wanted to get married in Tahiti but asking family and friends to travel to a far-off, exotic destination just wasn’t feasible. A tropical setting can be designed so guests are nearly basking on the beach, but in downtown Reno.
Hallert shares five things to consider based on her extensive expertise when seeking a venue for the big day: Reach out to a professional wedding planner prior to searching for venues. They can help narrow down your selections and help you navigate the ins and outs of wedding planning. Wedding planners already have the established relationships with local venues and other wedding professionals. A great resource to help you find a wedding planner is renotahoenace.net. Choose a venue that has a “Plan B” option in case of inclement weather, smoke, wind etc. If you are dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, make sure the venue can accommodate the ceremony indoors just in case. When looking at locations, find out what is included. She recommends booking a full-service venue that includes the tables, chairs, linens, set up and tear down of the space. This allows couples to enjoy their day without worrying about if and when the tables will be set, linens will arrive and who will stay to clean up. You spend so much time planning your day, make sure you enjoy it. Consider the location of the venue. Choosing a venue that is easily accessible to an airport, hotel accommodations and transportation will help alleviate stress for guests attending your wedding and make it more enjoyable for everyone.
Perhaps they have a theme in mind, or a family recipe they’d like recreated. Here, creativity has no bounds. Moulin Rouge masquerade ball? Done, replete with a can-can troupe from San Francisco. Want a steampunk-themed celebration where Burning Man meets the future? No problem.
Know your budget and estimated guest count. A wedding planner will help you work on your budget and also narrow down options based on guest capacity. It’s very important to know your budget before spending days or months visiting venues. There is nothing worse than falling in love with a venue and realizing it is out of your price range, or too small or too big to accommodate your wedding.
Booking the Sky Room nine months out minimum is optimal, with preferences like time of year and weekend versus weekday ceremonies coming into play.
When seeking out the perfect space for a memorable wedding—or any event—the Nevada Museum of Art can provide the perfect canvas, any time of year. m

NEVADA CHEER MAKING THE TEAM By Shannon Bonetti | Photos courtesy of Nevada Cheer Sponsored by Audi Reno Tahoe
Alana Betlach traveled all the way from Riverside, California to meet the ladies who could soon be her new teammates, “I’m moving here in the fall, and I really want to make the team.” The 20-yearold transfer student is attending the University of Nevada’s cheer clinic, testing her technique, style, and overall skills. “I’m having so much fun. It’s hard work, but I’m learning a lot,” said Alana. The clinics are designed specifically for hopefuls like herself planning to try out for the 2019 -2020 Wolf Pack cheer team. “We hold about 4-8 clinics a year right before tryouts. They can come see our style and decide if our program is right for them,” said head coach Kim Anastassatos. “We aren’t necessarily looking for the most talented, we’re looking for people who can fit into Nevada cheer.” For Alana, making the team would be a dream come true. “I’ve been following Nevada cheer since I was in high school. I think they’re absolutely amazing, plus I’m a huge game day cheerleader, so I think this would be a perfect fit for me.”
intense physical conditioning. “We’re watching their every move, things like arm placements, body posture, how they hold their head, all of that,” said Kim. The coaches also look for heart and passion, candidates who have the desire to make a difference not just on the field, but in the community as well. “They need to believe with their whole heart that this what they want to do. It really becomes who they are.” First year cheerleader Cameron Coffey knows from experience what it’s like to make the team, as well as the responsibilities that come with it. “It’s all very exciting, especially at the beginning. The fans are happy to see you, they want to take your picture and everything, but there’s more to it. It’s about representing Nevada and that’s a very special feeling.” It’s a special feeling she’s working hard to protect as every returning cheerleader is required to re-audition each year. “It’s good for the girls,” said Kim. “They realize there’s always someone younger, someone better, someone who wants their spot.” For them, there’s a lot at stake. “When clinics roll around you start thinking ok, I need to prove my spot and do the best I can. It definitely puts a little bit of a fire under your feet,” said Cameron.

It’s a grueling process to make it as a Wolf Pack cheerleader, and the competition is fierce. “We usually have about 150 people try out and, ultimately, we accept about 60 total. That includes guys, girls, and mascots,” said Kim. “Everyone wants to be a Nevada cheerleader these days, we try to create a positive atmosphere where they all can thrive, but the cuts really come down to the nitty gritty, it’s very tough.” Tryouts held in May consist of three days of strenuous workouts, new choreography, and
Every year is a new chapter for the Nevada cheer team as they prepare to shine like never before. “They’ll look back on these times one day,” said Kim. “Being on the team is really a lifelong commitment. We like to say, it was your team when you attended the University and it’ll always be your team. These are your people… forever.”

SPA Atlantis RENO’S ONLY FORBES FOUR-STAR LUXURY SPA By Leslie McCarroll | Photos courtesy of Spa Atlantis
A bottle of bubbly, charcuterie platter, and a card from our hostess that read “Greetings from Paradise” welcomed Team Bliss poolside at the Atlantis Resort, and we soon discovered what a true sliver of paradise Spa Atlantis truly is.
rooms that consisted of the Brine Inhalation-Light Therapy Lounge, Laconium Relaxation Lounge, and the herbal steam and cedarwood sauna. Each provided an experience for senses, mind, body and soul that only a Four-Star designated spa can do.
For the 4th consecutive year, Spa Atlantis has earned the highly coveted Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star designation, the only spa to attain this recognition in northern Nevada. Of the nearly 1,700 rated hotels, restaurants and spas in 60 countries (and counting), Forbes has recognized only 217 Four-Star spas, thus placing Spa Atlantis on its exclusive list of the most luxurious spas in the world.
I was especially intrigued by the Rasul Ceremonial Chambers which provides an intimate experience for couples, whether it be newlyweds, your bestie, or if you’re flying solo! This luxurious body treatment is reminiscent of the ancient Arabian cleansing rituals of royalty. This private, extravagant experience takes place in a temple under the twinkling light of the stars and concludes with a tropical rain shower. I booked my couples appointment right away and can’t wait to share with you my experience in one of our next issues!
Team Bliss was whisked away into a much needed slice of heaven and relaxation after a stressful week monopolized by magazine editing, design, meetings, and the laborious task of rebranding. We let our hair down, slipped on our bikinis, and channeled our inner zen as we immersed ourselves into what is known as the Aqua Spa Lounge. The Aqua Spa Lounge has an Experiential Shower and 4 different spas with varying temperature to invigorate and relax the system. Next, we decided to check out the various treatment
All good things must come to an end and so did our afternoon escapade at Spa Atlantis. We could have spent days decompressing and experiencing all that this exquisite 4 Star designated slice of paradise has to offer. You had us at “Hello”! This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship! Ahhhhhh! To book your next spa treatment and experience paradise for yourself please visit atlantiscasino.com. m

WEDDING Countdown 30 DAYS TO A PICTURE PERFECT YOU! By Mena Spodobalski
Weddings are wonderful for capturing memories that last a lifetime. We pick the perfect photographer and videographer, flowers, the dress, the beautiful venue…and YOU! As a bride, groom, or even a wedding guest, you want to look and feel your absolute best! Exercise is a great way to take your mind off all of the minute details. Give yourself some me time or better yet, get fit together! Working out and making healthy meals with your fiancé is a great way to bond and keep you both motivated to be at your best on your big day! It will also create a strong foundation for a healthy lifestyle as you begin your lives together. Start this plan 30 days prior to the big day to get in tip top shape…of course, you can start as early as you like, the sooner the better! CARDIO: 5-6 days a week, 45-60 minutes per session Whether you run, bike, hike, or take your favorite class at the gym to get your heart rate up, 45-60 minutes is your goal. Can’t spare that much time? Focus on HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and get it done in 30 minutes! STRENGTH TRAINING: 3-4 days a week, 30 minutes per session Weight training will help you gain muscle so that you are burning more calories at rest. A 30-minute focused session is all you need to get results. Think compound movements such as squat press, man makers, and step ups with bicep curls. These movements work more than one muscle group at a time, helping you burn more fat and calories. Don’t have a gym membership? That’s no excuse! Use your own body weight, or items around the house! There are so many resources online these days. Take to the internet and
google the movements mentioned here or simply try “strength training no weights” and you’re sure to find something that’ll do the trick. MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES: • Avoid alcohol or limit it to a minimum. Alcohol is empty calories, causes water retention, and will only work against you in your goal to look smashing in your gown or tux! • Avoid sugar, processed foods, and the white stuff. White stuff includes white rice, bread, pasta, etc. Instead, opt for healthy carbs such as sweet potatoes, quinoa, and oatmeal. • Increase your fruit and vegetable intake. The fiber keeps you regular and gives you the nutrients you need to keep your energy levels up both for workouts and preparations for the big day. • Eat a lean protein with every meal (eggs, meat, fish, nuts, soy). Protein is made up of amino acids which are the building blocks of muscle and building lean muscle is one of your primary goals. • Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. Keep your body hydrated and your skin glowing! SLEEP: 7-8 hours every night Sleep is underrated! Your body needs it to re-energize, to rebuild, and to help you hit your day with energy and enthusiasm. When you are sluggish, your workouts will suffer and you will be less productive overall. Follow these tips for 30 days and not only will you be confident and camera ready but you’ll feel amazing too. Chances are, you’ll also be motivated to keep up your healthy habits as newlyweds! Remember, the bonus benefit of exercise is a healthy sex life! Enjoy! m

CELEBRITY SURGEONS AND REJUVENATION SPECIALISTS Tell All! By Adriane Schwartz
Ready to go into planning mode to look your very best on your wedding day? For many couples, the decision to get married represents a kind of coming of age. While dating, all of the focus is on your partner and falling in love is forefront. Then, as we consider marriage and growing old together, our attention tends to shift back on ourselves and where we are in the grand scheme of our lives. As we micro-manage every detail in preparation for our special day and spend more time on our fitness and beauty regimes so we can really shine when the spotlight’s on us, we tend to pay a little more attention to those pesky “problem areas” and just want them to go away. Though we know our partners love us just the way we are, we imagine that if we could just fix that one thing that bothers us most about ourselves and robs us of our confidence, then we will be the best version of ourselves and, in turn, the best partner, the best lover for our future spouse. We see celebrities getting work done left and right, watch reality TV shows that make plastic surgery seem like a walk in the park, and hear success stories that make us wonder “what if?” So…what IF?!
options too! Even if you’re one who would never consider surgery or cosmetic treatment, perhaps you’re just curious about what’s involved! So, we asked world renowned Beverly Hills celebrity plastic surgeons, Dr. Payman Danielpour and Dr. John Layke, about which procedures women desire most, the down time, and costs associated to help you make the most informed decision for your special day.
Plastic surgery has come a long way and the risks are now few and far between. Plus, there are so many non-surgical

Adriane: Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group is known for making people look great so when a wedding day approaches many women look to you both for help. What are Brides’ most common requests? Danielpour: Most brides don’t want to completely change the way they look but they want to glow with brighter and tighter appearing skin, less wrinkles, and smaller pores. Depending on the amount of time, each bride has a tailored package that is made specifically for them addressing their individual concerns. We have both surgical and nonsurgical ways to ensure our patients look their best for their special day.

office with photos of their dream body or the perfect nose, for instance? Danielpour: Absolutely. This is true for all of our patients, not just brides to be. We have state of the art machines that help our patients see what will work best for their body or face, and help them visualize the end result. Our number one goal is to make sure our patients are happy with their results and that they will walk down the aisle with confidence. Adriane: Do you ever suggest that your patients wait until after their wedding to make any big changes? Danielpour: It depends how much it bothers them and how motivated they are to make the changes before the big day. We are here to treat patients and make them happy so it really is up to them. If we believe that the patient does not have enough recovery time prior to their event, and that it could impact their confidence or enjoyment of their wedding or honeymoon, we will recommend they wait. Adriane: You are located in the center of Beverly Hills, how far do brides travel for your work? Layke: Brides are not only local, but many fly here from all over the world (China, the Middle East, etc.) to look good for their wedding day. Adriane: Fitting into that perfect wedding dress is so important to most future brides. What can you do to help women who are desperate to have a perfect waist for their big day? Layke: This all depends on how much time they have. We have multiple options to remove unwanted fat and sculpt the body. Treatments range from surgical options like liposuction and non-surgical options like CoolSculpting to remove areas of unwanted fat, to Emsculpt, the new revolutionary treatment to build muscle to achieve an instant six pack or butt lift. Adriane: Tell me a little bit about the procedures and pricing for the most commonly requested, and the most effective results? Layke: Most commonly procedures include:
requested
non-surgical
Hydrafacial ($250) – This 45 minute procedure cleans and hydrates the skin, and reduces pore size. This is the treatment that gives that instant glow!

Piqo4 laser ($1,500 for 4-6 treatments, 2 weeks apart) – This non-invasive laser treatment addresses fine lines, pores and sun spots with no downtime or pain. Microneedling and PRP aka “vampire facial” ($900 per treatment, typically 3 treatments are needed, 6 weeks apart) – This treatment uses PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) using your own blood along with microneedling. This procedure reduces pore size, hydrates and plumps the skin, and gives you an overall glow. CoolSculpting aka “freezing fat” ($750/area) – Using cryo technology targeted fat cells are destroyed giving the patient a more sculpted and toned figure. This can be used for virtually all parts of the body, including the neck. Emsculpt ($1,000 per session, 4 sessions needed) – This uses HIFEM (High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Energy) to build muscle and eliminate fat. Currently used for abs and buttock lift. As far as surgical procedures, there are many but the most frequently requested are: Rhinoplasty aka “nose job” ($8,500-$12,500) – Requires 1 week of downtime and approximately 3 months prior to being wedding and picture ready. Breast Augmentation ($8.500) – Using breast implants to augment the breasts, this procedure gives immediate gratification with little to no downtime. Wedding ready immediately. Liposuction (cost varies depending on areas targeted) – Surgically removes unwanted fat with minimal downtime. Wedding and picture ready in 6-12 weeks depending on extent of surgery and areas targeted. Med Spas – A Popular Alternative to Plastic Surgery For those brides that wish to look their best and avoid plastic surgery, Med Spas have become the answer to many of their beauty needs. Whether it’s a glowing skin, a sexy pout, or a svelt figure, these needs can be accomplished today with very little down time. And for those brides who prefer not to travel far before their wedding day, you have options! We chose The Beverly Hills Rejeuvenation Center (BHRC) because it truly has it all, including many locations around the U.S. We asked Co-Founders Devin Haman and Dan Holtz to shed some light on their amazing options for the newly engaged.
From left to right: Slade Smiley, Dan Holtz, Janice Dickinson, Dean Cain, Joanna Krupa, Gretchen Rossi, Oksana Haman, Devin Haman
Adriane: Everyone wants to look their best for their wedding and brides often visit day spas to prepare. Why do celebs choose BHRC rather than other day spas? Haman: Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center has been in Los Angeles for over ten years and our clients trust us and send their friends to our many locations across the country. When women are ready to take the plunge and get married one of their biggest concerns is their waistline, their skin, and their lips. Nowadays we are very lucky to be able to help women slim down and look refreshed without surgery or downtime. Adriane: What are the three most common things brides-to-be ask for when they visit BHRC and what is the cost? Haman: Brides want to slim down! When women need to fit into their gowns, the quickest way to get rid of that muffin top or any bulge easily is cool sculpting. We recommend they come at least 6 months in advance because doing it twice ensures the best results. The cost for cool sculpt is $750 per area per session. We have had amazing success helping women trim down with cool sculpting. Brides want to glow! The next most common issue women come to us for is their skin. Brides of course want flawless skin so we send them straight for a hydra facial. We suggest 3 hydra facial sessions in the month just before the wedding. A hydra facials starts at $200 per session. Brides want that sexy pout! The next most common procedure BHRC performs is lip fillers. Let’s face it, voluptuous lips are in these days and women love to look sexy on their wedding

day. It is one of the most requested of all our procedures even when no wedding is involved. When this procedure is done properly, and we really have it down to a fine art here, women are thrilled. The price is between $600 and $1000 and lasts anywhere from 6 to 12 months. Adriane: What is the newest, hottest, and greatest that your clients and celeb clients have to look forward to at BHRC? Holtz: People are popping in for a butt lift. We are able to give people a fuller, more lifted derriere by stimulating collagen production, reinforcing skin’s inner structure, and restoring its volume. Another popular new treatment is stem cell injections, the ultimate anti-aging and regenerative treatment which helps with hair loss, sore joints, overall wellness, and facial rejuvenation. Adriane: And where can brides-to-be find you? Holtz: We love our brides-to-be but we want to please as many people as possible – we treat many grooms-to-be too! And, there’s such a high demand for beauty these days so we’ve opened locations around the U.S. with plans for even more! We currently have 12 locations in the US: Los Angeles and Newport Beach, California; Summerlin and Boca Park, Nevada; Boca Raton, Florida; Scottsdale, Arizona; Southlake, Cedar Park, Highland Park, Houston, Dallas, Frisco, San Antonio, Texas. Love TRANSCENDS ALL
What do TV stars, politicians, journalists, chefs, businessmen, pilots, gay couples, heterosexuals, Americans, Africans, Polish, big city and small town folk all have in common? LOVE. In a world that seems more and more divided on topics related to politics, race, gender, socioeconomic factors, environmental issues, etc. We hope these blissful and somewhat unconventional love stories remind you that we are all human. We all love and need to be loved. In whatever shape or form “family takes for each individual, we rely on each other to lift us up when we need help and we help our loved ones in their times of need. At the heart of it all is LOVE.

NIKKI & ERIC By Eric Hendrikx (Summary from Vicarious, META Magazine March 2019) Motorcycle photos by EL3 Productions | Wedding photos by Savannah Rae
“On August 3, 2017, I was riding a motorcycle in the Swiss Alps when suddenly my back tire bottomed out. With little time to react, I tried to put the bike down on the road and save myself from going off the edge of the mountain. Instead, I highsided and went into a horrific tumble before I was hurled like a ragdoll through a wooden guardrail and landed 75 feet off the mountainside. Helicopter rescue hoisted me off the mountain and brought me to Kantonsspital Graubünden, where I was placed in a medically induced coma. Days later, I woke up in the intensive care unit, where X-rays and MRI scans revealed a dozen fractures in my spine, a broken hand, a smashed hip, broken ribs, a snapped collar bone and a shattered scapula. Within an instant, my life had changed forever. But, as time would reveal, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me.” Eric Hendrikx is a journalist who writes for Rolling Stone, Playboy, and Revolver Magazine to name a few. He’s also a motorcycle enthusiast. Just before he went on an annual trip to Switzerland with his son, Stone, he met Nikki Martin on a private, membershipbased dating app. Eric described her as “a lovely brunette with great taste in music, an eclectic vibe, and an evident affinity for cooking… lovely to speak with, confident but not self-absorbed.” Nikki is a private chef who has participated in Food Network cooking shows, and has worked for Robert Downey Jr., P. Diddy, Jared Leto, and Kim Kardashian. There was an instant connection but they were unable to meet before Eric’s scheduled trip to Switzerland so he promised to take her to dinner upon his return. On the morning of August 3, Eric sent Nikki a text message: “Hi lovely girl... I’m off for a motorcycle ride in the Swiss Alps. Have a nice day and will text you when I get back.” And off he went for a ride with Sascha Buscher, a fellow motorcycle enthusiast and owner of Provisorium13, Arosa’s most charming lakefront hotel and restaurant where they had spent the evening prior enjoying a few crisp German pilsners together. “Corner after corner, I felt like a titan, a centurion of the Alps. I wore a smile on my face that joy couldn’t match. The landscapes were breathtaking and left deep impressions...” On the return trip up the mountain, it happened. “In a split second, I was launched through a wood-beamed guardrail and pitched over the mountainside. I had seen over-the-edge-of-the-cliff moments before, and knew that survival was impossible.” Meanwhile, Nikki hadn’t heard from Eric in days so she looked him up on Facebook and saw a post about his accident and was devastated. Finally, she received a text from him and they began talking regularly. Eric was unable to fly home for recovery due to a punctured lung, and through his surgeries and grueling rehab, their conversations became the embodiment of hope, an urgency to stay positive and strive to recover. Then, Nikki came to visit… “When the train arrived, I got butterflies. Nikki exited the train with her luggage and walked right up to me with a smile that expressed joy, nervousness and fatigue all in one gesture. I greeted her with a bright smile and a big bear hug. She was more beautiful in person than in her photos — her eyes captivated me,
filled with sincerity and compassion. In that moment, after all of our conversations, late-night texts, and hopeful thoughts, I knew that her long journey was worth it — it was the right place, and the right time. I offered to carry Nikki’s bags. She looked at my slinged arm, giggled, and produced a shirt from her bag that read, ‘CRASHING SUCKS.’ We laughed and walked together through the light rain back to Provisorium13 where I was now staying until I was released to fly home.” They spent a week in Arosa, took a side trip to Lugano and Lake Como, and then went to Hettlingen, the home town of Eric’s Swiss relatives who absolutely loved Nikki, and she was wonderful with them. They cooked together, played games, and created memories to last a lifetime. She flew home after an emotional departure, and finally Eric was released to go home two weeks later. Nikki and Eric became inseparable. They traveled together, spent the holidays together, and when he finally got on a motorcycle again, Nikki hopped on the back with him. Shortly thereafter, they found out Nikki was pregnant and couldn’t have been more thrilled. They found a house in Newport Beach and moved in together and started planning their lives together. They took one last trip to Hawaii before they would become parents. “One afternoon, we hiked down the Waipio Valley to the black sand beaches. I set up cameras, telling Nikki that we were going to take a selfie in the river that flowed into the Central Pacific Ocean. I set the camera timers and walked to Nikki in the shallow riverbed, where I took a knee, pulled a ring out of my pocket and proposed to her. I had found my soul mate and after a whirlwind of traveling, sharing, loving and good living, I was certain it was for keeps.” They were married on July 15th and welcomed Isabella Moon Hendrikx into the world on October 24th. “No one can prepare you for childbirth— it’s a miracle. As I held our tiny daughter in my hands and she stared back at me, I knew that all I had been through — the accident, the surgeries, rehabilitation, moving homes, getting married — gave me a deep recognition of purpose, and a renewed appreciation of family. Some say our story sounds like a real-life fairy tale. And while it’s true, we do have an amazing story with magical beginnings, the reality is, Nikki and I will face the same struggles as any other married couple raising a child. But as I sit here typing these final words in our Newport Beach home, while baby Isabella gently coos in her bassinette and my beautiful wife, scantily clad in lace-edged lingerie, comes to me with a platter filled with sizzling Niman Ranch bacon; I just have to wonder — maybe I did end up in a fairy tale.” To read Eric’s recount of their love story in its entirety, please visit BlissLifeMag.com/NikkiandEric

KATHY & STEVE Photos by Andrea Waller
Amidst all of the mixed messaging in political media, it can be easy to forget that politicians are human too. Bliss Life had the honor of interviewing First Lady Kathy Sisolak to discuss her recent nuptials and to get her perspective on marriage and family. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know First Lady Kathy Sisolak and appreciate her heartfelt responses and we know you will too. Bliss: How did you and the Governor meet? Was it love at first sight or did your relationship develop over time? First Lady: Steve and I lived in the same housing complex where there is a fitness center/gym for the residents. I would occasionally see Steve who was, at the time, on the University Board of Regents. It was not love at first sight, but over the next 8 years we slowly progressed to saying hello to each other and making small talk on the treadmill along with the other gym rats. When he became Clark County Commissioner, we started working professionally together on bond related matters, as I was the financial advisor for Clark County at the time. He and I were dating other people this entire time. Then in 2013, we found ourselves both single and we went on a date. It was pretty immediate that on our first date, we had a strong connection, and we made plans for a second date. Unfortunately, I got very sick and realized I had to cancel. I looked and felt terrible! He offered to bring me soup partly because he is a sweetheart, and partly because he suspected that I might be feigning sickness to get out of the second date. However, intuitively, I knew that was his worry, so I agreed for him to deliver the soup. He brought me soup and was glad that I was really sick and not trying to ditch him. He later told me that had I not let him deliver the soup, he would have likely not asked me out again. Love at first sight - no. Love at first terrible sight - yes! Bliss: Is this your first marriage? Do you have any children? First Lady: I had never been married before and have no children, but I have two amazing step daughters who have been nothing but kind, supportive, and loving towards me. They truly are Steve’s greatest accomplishments. Bliss: Are you a native Nevadan? Can you tell us more about your family history? First Lady: My paternal grandfather immigrated to Ely from China, to be a cook at the Northern Hotel. My paternal grandmother and my then 5-year old father came later in 1921. My father fought in the US Army during World War II and, upon his return from France, he started looking for a bride. In 1952, he was introduced to my mom by their respective parents. They married in Hong Kong and that is where my oldest brother was born. My mom and brother soon immigrated to 42

Ely in 1954, where my mother had 2 more sons before me. Soon after I was born, we moved to Las Vegas, where my father was offered a job as a Faro bank dealer at the Fremont Hotel – the first Chinese dealer in Las Vegas. I have spent my entire life in Nevada, specifically Las Vegas. I went to college at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and right after graduation I worked as a financial analyst for Clark County, Nevada. I left the County in 1996 to form my own company, Hobbs, Ong & Associates, Inc., a municipal advisory consulting firm. All of my immediate family live in Las Vegas. Home absolutely means Nevada to us. Bliss: What are your favorite ways to spend time together as a couple? First Lady: We like to take walks, go to movies, go shopping, and go out to eat. Every Sunday when we are all together, we either have lunch or dinner with his daughters. We also really enjoy going to Disneyland – it is such a happy place – except for the lines! Bliss: Did you ever think you would be a First Lady? First Lady: I never imagined I would be First Lady. When I first started dating Steve there was discussion that he might run for Governor, but thinking about it and it actually happening was not something I imagined. It is a privilege and honor to be the First Lady of Nevada. I hope to be a positive influence and help Nevadans whenever I am needed. Bliss: What are some of your top values? In your opinion, what are the key ingredients to a loving, lasting marriage? First Lady: Family is so important - Steve’s daughters are our top priority and he talks to them every day. I have enjoyed getting to know them and they have been so supportive of our relationship. Since we are newlyweds and this is my first marriage, I certainly don’t consider myself an authority on a loving and lasting marriage. However, I can say we have great communication, similar goals, we have fun, and Steve has a great sense of humor. For me, a wedding isn’t about flowers, dress, or food – but the commitment between two people who are willing to take the vows seriously. One thing my love story with Steve has taught me is that love can find you when you least expect it. After working out at the same gym for years but barely speaking to each other, I never thought the man next to me on the treadmill would one day become my husband. Luckily, Steve and I finally got to know one another and fell in love, and the rest is history. For more Q&A with First Lady Sisolak, visit BlissLifeMag.com/Sisolak

JOANNA & DOUGLAS By Adriane Schwartz | Photos by Pawel Sarota
Joanna Krupa is a world famous Polish American model and actress known for her roles on The Real Housewives of Miami and Dancing with the Stars Season 9. In August 2018, Joanna lived a true fairytale wedding when she married businessman Douglas Nunes in Krakow, Poland. Joanna sat down with Bliss Life Editor Adriane Schwartz to share all the romantic details of her whimsical castle wedding at the ancient Benedictine Abbey. What makes this tale even more like the pages of the storybook? The groom did most of the wedding planning! Adriane: At what moment did you know Douglas was the one? Joanna: When we met everything happened quickly and I knew almost immediately that he was the one. He has the most honest face and I truly could see myself having a family with him. On our first date he invited me out to dinner, and then the second date he cooked for me. He is the opposite of Hollywood and he’s as real as real can be. I needed balance in life so I was so happy to find a normal guy. After only one month, we already knew we wanted live together. Adriane: How did he propose? Joanna: We had talked about getting engaged and I knew he was purchasing a ring, so I wasn’t completely shocked by the proposal. I just didn’t know when it would happen. Douglas always likes how I talk to my dog in Polish – I’m always saying, “Give me your paw,” so Douglas asked me to give him my paw! I was half asleep and thought I was dreaming so I was slow to react – he was a little disappointed that I didn’t jump up and down, it was sweet. The ring was exactly what I wanted. I am very lucky. Adriane: Did you envision yourself getting married a second time? Joanna: After my first marriage didn’t work out, my outlook on life had changed and I thought maybe I’m supposed to be single. Even though I’ve dreamt of having a family and marriage seemed right, I didn’t chase it – I was in no hurry before I met Douglas…it was a nice surprise. Adriane: What steps did you take to prepare for the wedding? Joanna: We got engaged in March and were married in August. Between those months, I was shooting Poland’s Next Top Model so I didn’t have a lot of time. I always take care of my skin and self-tan to keep a nice glow! We got married in Poland with very little planning time, so we were thrilled to get the church we wanted. It was the only available date all year so the timing was perfect. Adriane: You know a lot about fashion having modeled for so many years. What style were you going for when you chose your wedding dress? Joanna: Since my husband is very conservative and prefers
me in a more classic style of clothing, he wanted my look to be the complete opposite of my first wedding. He actually said I looked like a show girl in my original wedding dress. It was a different time, and I would never choose that dress today. I chose a dress I knew he would love. It was beautiful, conservative, and sexy all at the same time. It was white, off the shoulders, simple, chic, classy, and very Jackie O! Adriane: Tell me a little bit about your wedding bouquet and flowers? Joanna: For my first wedding, I had over 30 thousand peonies, this time my wedding was more about my groom and my family. I texted my family and asked them to help me get Lily of the Valley flowers. We wanted a romantic, simple, fairytale wedding, but not too over the top. It was a smaller group, about 30 people. They were all of the closest people to me and those who flew in were mostly family. Adriane: How did you choose the perfect location for both of you? And why did you choose it? Joanna: It really was meant to be. Douglas picked my favorite spot near to where I grew up and he found everything for me. He found a fairytale castle and one of the oldest churches in Krakow with an amazing view. He knew what I loved, and he even chose the restaurant I loved. He did so well, people book their weddings two years in advance and almost everything was booked up. Our dinner was on an outdoor patio. The reception had simple flowers and gorgeous hanging lights. It was so romantic and everything I’d envisioned. It was a beautiful location and our dinner was delicious. At 11:00pm after our wedding festivities, we all went to Karaoke, laughed and sang for hours. We had a blast. Adriane: What made your wedding so special to you? Joanna: Our family had a place in Krakow, Poland when I was growing up, so that spot in the world is special in my heart. We used to travel to Krakow to visit my aunt, who is no longer with us, so having my wedding there felt like she was able to celebrate with us. I am so grateful for such an amazing day, and Douglas did a lot of the planning which makes it even more special. Adriane: What do you and Douglas value most in your marriage and what do you think are the key ingredients to a lasting, loving marriage? Joanna: No two people are identical, and no relationship is perfect. You have to be open and willing to compromise. I believe that the key ingredient is communication and being open with your feelings. Talking about issues is the most important element to keeping a marriage healthy. Marriage is constant work, but when you truly love someone it is worth every bit of effort.
seanANT SEAN & ANTON
By Sean Cary | Photos by Florence Charvin
To marry the person you love is the most beautiful, special thing one can experience. The feeling of walking down the aisle to heartfelt music, surrounded by those you love, knowing how different life will become is an event that will change you forever. Sean Cary and Anton Novak have done it, twice. In a private ceremony several years ago, Sean and Anton married each other in their back yard, sharing their vows and proclaiming to each other and to the heavens just how much they mean to each other. Both men were a bit apprehensive— marriage equality had just become legal in 2015 and neither had any idea what that would look like. In 2017, Sean and Anton decided to adopt three children from foster care. “There are too many children in Washoe County who need homes! No matter what those home looks like,” says Cary. Sean and Anton were matched with three beautiful children and they finalized their adoption in March 2018. Much of Anton’s family lives overseas and they did not attend Sean and Anton’s first wedding, nor the adoption, and most of them had never met Sean. The time had come for Anton to introduce his family to his family. Traveling seven thousand miles with three children sounds like a pretty big task but being that Anton is a retired airline pilot, aviation is part of who they are as a family. Anton grins fondly, remembering a time when the children’s foster mom asked, “So what is it you do?” And he responded, “I make doughnuts and fly airplanes.” So, this past December 2018, the family of five made the journey from Reno to Auckland, New Zealand so Anton and Sean could renew their vows with their children. Anton’s family owns the Telegraph Hill Olivery, New Zealand’s number one provider of olives and olive oils. It is high summer in December so amongst the olive trees, branches heavy with fruit, was the perfect location to say “I do” all over again.
The plant life in New Zealand is legendary, so Sean really wanted to go all out with flowers. Gorgeous green gerbera daisies, blush pink lilies the size of a dinner plate, and hundreds of silvery white roses ensured the air was thick with perfume on that beautiful summer day. One of the most famous chefs in New Zealand, Chef Kent Baddeley, put together a magical ten course dinner for the occasion, each dish showcasing New Zealand’s finest. Typically, Sean and Anton would craft the perfect menu down to the smallest detail but surprise was the order of the day. The chef made sure each course was a new adventure with that unique Kiwi flair New Zealand is famous for. Lamb, duck, green-lipped mussels, and of course the famous olives made for a culinary experience that exhausts all superlatives. Weddings can be stressful, but by relinquishing control to the professionals and trusting them to do their jobs, Sean and Anton were able to laugh and smile on this carefree day. They focused on themselves and their family rather than whether or not the caterer brought enough wine glasses… he didn’t, but who cares? There were many joyous tears all around the olive grove that beautiful day, a day of magic and joy. Sean still tears up as he remembers, “To see my son’s eyes welling up as the officiant pronounced us a family for life is one of the greatest moments I have ever experienced. After four long, horrific years in foster care, my children finally had what they so desperately yearned for all their young little lives—a family of their own. Sean Cary and Anton Novak are the proud owners of Rounds Bakery in Reno, Nevada. While they do not make cakes, Rounds Bakery does a great deal of wedding and events, catering for groups of any size. Whether you are looking for a dramatic macaron tower, a wall of doughnuts, or whatever joyous creation that lives in your imagination, Rounds Bakery will work with you every step the way to make sure your special day is filled with magic. RUTH & LUKE Photos by Larry Lipparelli
Ruth was born in a small village in Kenya where poverty is the norm and the only children who receive an education are those “lucky” enough to end up in an orphanage that is funded by foreign donors. At an early age, she knew that if she didn’t do something to improve her situation she would end up like her mother; destitute, abandoned, and uneducated. It took years to work up the courage, but at 17 years old, she set off on foot, in the dead of night, and headed toward an orphanage that was 10 miles away. She told them that she was an abandoned street kid with no memory of her past – it took two separate attempts and homelessness in between but they eventually took her in. Meanwhile, Luke was being home schooled by his mom in a middle class Christian family living in Reno, Nevada. His dad worked for Washoe County Child Protective Services. When Luke finished high school, he went straight into the work force. He found himself discouraged and frustrated by friends and coworkers who were making poor life choices. Luke remembered his dad telling him about a friend who worked for the Reno Police Department and was the founder of an orphanage in Kenya. Seeking adventure and new purpose, he asked his brother, Daniel, to go with him to Kenya to visit the orphanage. So, they booked a flight and off they went. Luke was 19. The trip was hectic and, at times, they feared for their lives but eventually they made it to the orphanage – a mud hut with a grass roof, no electricity and no running water. Soon after they arrived, Luke and Daniel realized that money was being poorly managed at the orphanage, they intervened to minimize corruption. And, so they found their purpose and lived at the orphanage for six months. Over time, life at the orphanage became a new “norm.” A common practice was to gather all of the kids and walk a few miles to the next village to play a game of soccer with another school. During one of the first games he attended, Luke was taken aback by one of the women playing soccer. She was vivacious, energetic, and had the most beautiful smile. It was Ruth.
He was intrigued by Ruth but he knew he must resist any feelings for her. On the many walks to soccer and elsewhere, they naturally gravitated toward each other and a beautiful friendship developed. Ruth had learned some English in her year at the orphanage prior to Luke’s arrival (she was now 18) and he had picked up a bit of Swahili and they actually managed to communicate quite well. By the time 6 months had passed and it was time for Luke to go home, the two had, in fact, fallen deeply in love. Luke promised he would be back. Ruth was hopeful but did not know what to expect. She loved her life in Kenya, it was all she knew. As promised, Luke returned to Kenya one year later and decided he could not be away from Ruth any longer. All odds were against him – this was during the recession in Reno- money was tight, jobs were scarce, but Luke was willing to spend every penny he had to bring Ruth to America to be his bride. It took years to obtain proper documentation for a fiancé visa, let alone continue to develop a relationship with Ruth and convince her to leave her country. But, finally, after 5 years and over $10,000 invested in this process, there he was with Ruth by his side on a flight from Kenya to Reno-Tahoe International Airport. One month later, following an intimate ceremony on the beach in Maui, Luke and his Kenyan bride, Ruth, were married. Fast forward to today, Luke is now an Operations Manager for AAA and Ruth is a stay at home mom. They live in Sparks, Nevada with 2 boys, Isaiah (6) and Isaac (4), and Ruth has settled into life as an American. “She is still amused when she sees Chihuahuas wearing clothes,” Luke laughs, “And I still treat her like my princess.” When asked about their tips for a loving, lasting marriage, Luke would urge couples to spend time in the marriage, go on dates, and remember that marriage is forever, you stay together no matter what. Ruth agrees and says, “love, patience, and forgiveness are what make a marriage work.” And, they both agree with Luke’s mom when she adds that the key to marriage is to laugh with each other every day.

TRINA & MATT By Trina McLean | Photos by Kevin Nguyen, Photoquest Studio Photography
I met my husband, Matt, on my birthday in April 2000, but that is not where our love story begins… My best friend at the time had just started dating Matt and she introduced him to me as her boyfriend. No big deal, he was nice but obviously I had no romantic interest because he was dating my best friend. I knew we were both from the same small town and we had gone to the same high school. He was one grade up from me but our paths had never crossed until then. Shortly thereafter, he introduced me to a friend of his who I began dating and would date on and off for the next six years. For the first three and a half years, Matt continued to date my best friend and the four of us spent a lot of time together. When they broke up, my boyfriend and I stayed together and eventually got engaged. I know, confusing, right? Despite what was going on in our relationships with our mutual friends, Matt was always a constant in my life but I had never looked at him in any other way than just my best (male) friend. That being said, friends would often comment that we had amazing chemistry and they could see it in the way we looked at each other, it radiated from us. We ran in the same crowd, went to the same parties, and I would often catch him looking at me from across the room and our eyes would just lock on each other. Well, life went on, I finally realized that I wasn’t in love with my fiancé anymore and I ended my engagement. Don’t feel so sorry for him though, he had monogamy issues during our entire relationship, so this ending was a long time coming. Through it all, Matt and I were just friends, as we always were. You would think this is where our love story flourished and took off. Oh no, that would be too easy. Truth is, I did fall in love with Matt, but he was scared shitless and couldn’t commit. This threw the balance off in our friendship so we took a break from spending time together and, honestly, I thought I had lost my best friend forever. I was devastated. I was so certain that I had found my soul mate…he was “the one.” After a few months and a little help from a friend, we slowly started to rebuild the friendship we thought we had lost. It still took a few months, but this is when the kindling of the fire began to burn. The first time around, I was fresh off the broken engagement and though I thought the time was right, I still needed time to heal. Perhaps Matt sensed it and that’s what sent him running for the hills. That time to myself was therapeutic and now the timing was perfect. The time apart made us realize how much we meant to each other and now the feeling was mutual…we were ready to jump in with both feet.
We started dating and after 6 months he moved in. After three and a half years of dating, and a total of 12 years as friends, he proposed on my birthday April 21, 2011. A little over a year later, we tied the knot in an intimate back yard wedding at his mother and step father’s house. We didn’t have a lot of money but we had a whole lotta love. We were surrounded by all of our closest friends and family as we committed ourselves to each other. Our wedding was filled with so much love and is still hands down the best day of our lives. Since we had lived together for so long and had everything we needed for our home, we decided to register through Sandals Resorts for a honeymoon to Jamaica. And, turns out all of our wedding guests loved the idea and we had our entire honeymoon payed for!! The day after our wedding, still swooning from our most perfect day, we set out on our honeymoon for 10 relaxing, fun-filled days in Negril and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Upon our return, at the next family gathering, someone inevitably asked the next logical question…you guessed it… when are you having kids? I was 34, Matt was 35, and we knew the clock was ticking. We absolutely wanted to have kids, we knew we didn’t have a whole lot of time, but we did want to enjoy this honeymoon phase and spend some quality time together before we started a family. We had enjoyed traveling together whenever we could during the first 4 years of our relationship and our amazing trip to Jamaica only fueled our passion for seeing more of the world. So, we started planning more trips each year and with each trip we felt more torn between continuing to travel and starting a family. As we observed many of our married friends having children, we began to notice a shift in their relationships and the stress associated with starting a family. It helped us to see what kind of foundation we needed in order to sustain a happy marriage with children. We cherished our marriage, our love, and our quality time together and decided we weren’t quite ready yet. So, we planned more vacations! This brought us closer to approaching 40 and we sat down for the final discussion of do we or don’t we and mutually decided that we weren’t going to have children. If you had asked me when we got married if we were going to have kids the answer was 100% yes. I even had my names picked out. Having children is not for everyone and we were fortunate to have the support on both sides of our family to do what was right for us and never felt pressured one way or the other. We have so many beautiful nieces and nephews who we get to enjoy and that fills our hearts. In the meantime, we strive to live our marriage full of love and admiration for one another and continue to travel as much as we can. m

NUPTIALS and Bubbles By Mike Owen, Founder of Crystal Basin Cellars
Bubbly wines have long been one of the key hallmarks of a well planned and executed wedding. From the warm up in the dressing room to the long awaited toast and on to the morning after mimosas, sparkling wines have certainly earned their keep in the celebration of marriage.
FOR BETTER OR WORSE…FOR RICHER OR POORER When you are wandering down the aisle at your local wine store, it is easy to be bewildered by the many choices, styles, and origins of the bubbly wines. First, not all bubbly wines are Champagne. Champagne is viewed as the “real stuff” and benefits from a legally protected name because those bottles come from a specific region in France. Not from Champagne? Can’t call it Champagne…sorry. Serving really good Champagne at your wedding may strain your budget to where you may have to fire the pool boy, so there are other options that need to be considered. Vin Mousseux is a way to “drink French” without breaking the bank. You can find it in styles from sweet to dry depending on your personal preference. Look, if it comes down to a decision between serving real Champagne or a honeymoon in Tahiti? Save the $$ and opt for Vin Mousseux and Tahiti. Your guests will understand. If French wines aren’t your first choice but you still want that European flair, here are some options: Cava – The folks in Spain like this wine with tapas and, well, just about everything else too! If
your wedding includes the trendy appetizer bar approach, this will be a perfect fit without the strain on your budget. Prosecco – This is the fun and slightly sweet bubbly from Italy. It’s nicely priced and will remind you of your sweet auntie who asked you to be her flower girl. Prosecco is a hit at any wedding celebration (and the pre-parties as well). Sekt – You might expect the Germans to be in on this gig as well. But, seriously, isn’t there enough structure in the whole wedding process? More Teutonic structure won’t help your stress level… trust me on this. Let’s not leave out all the great sparkling wine offerings from California. The possibilities are practically endless and you can have some serious fun trying out 25 or 30 different bubbly wines at various tasting rooms throughout California. Why not hop on a party bus with your bridesmaids and make a day of it in wine country? Whether you’re in El Dorado, Amador, Napa, or Sonoma, you’re sure to find a bubbly that suits your fancy. Shoestring budget? The “Champagne of Beers,” Miller High Life, is always an option, especially if you are marrying kinfolk. You’ll have to go to California for the union to be legal so plan ahead. For this type of wedding, you won’t need nametags but putting up a family tree poster could make the literate family members vaguely uncomfortable. The suggested pairing is microwaved Velveeta and Chili with Fritos. m

#RAMPITUPRENO TAKING THE GUESSWORK OUT OF EATING RIGHT By Meghan Ochs | Photos courtesy of Duckfat & Chorizo Creative Agency
Anyone planning a wedding knows how difficult it can be to keep track of all of the moving parts. And when we’re busy, one of the hardest things to do right is eat! Aside from those prepping for a fitness competition, brides and grooms are among the most conscious of their eating habits and how food choices affect overall health and fitness. Not only do we want to look just right on that special day but we also need to keep our energy levels up to keep all the details straight and mood in check to be personality plus for our guests. Many are finding that meal prepping is the key to success. The concept of meal prepping is a hot topic on social media and rightfully so. Let’s face it, we are busier today than we have ever been yet we’re becoming increasingly more aware of how our food choices affect all aspects of our lives. Those seeking peak performance are finding that meal prepping is the only way to stay ahead of the curve. Meal prepping involves preparing all of ones meals, for multiple days at a time, in well balanced portions so meals that meet specific caloric and nutritional needs are ready to grab and go. But who has time for that? Roundabout Meal Prep to the Rescue! Roundabout Meal Prep is part of the Roundabout family of companies, and their Program Director, Shanti Wolfe, is a registered dietician and personal trainer who knows a thing or two about micros, macros, carbs, proteins, fats, and a lot of other nutrition related words that can be overwhelming to people who have limited time or understanding about nutrition but still want to achieve their health and fitness goals. Not to worry…as the face of Roundabout Meal Prep, Shanti does individualized consulting with clients to assess all of their nutritional needs, activity levels, and ideal meal plans. Customers of Roundabout Meal Prep, @ramp.reno or #RampItUpReno on social media, have many options to choose from if they wish to save time, money, and hassle while seeking to lean out, bulk up, or simply feel better. Roundabout Meal Prep offers three predefined programs to start; Gymrat, Caveman, and Chefdoc. Customers can pick up their meals two days a week at five different locations across Reno or they can opt for home delivery every Monday and Thursday. Email and text alerts help ensure that meals are delivered fresh and stored promptly. The Gymrat program is a plan with multiple calorie count options and is great for those seeking weight loss as their number one goal. Caveman is a paleo style plan that is a little more strict -lower on carbs, higher on fats and proteins. Caveman is also grain and legume free. The ChefDoc program is for those with medical conditions that require strict dietary needs or calorie control. Within each plan there are dozens of options to customize. In all cases, clients can choose how many days per week they want prepared and how many meals and snacks they would like each day. So, why not take the guess work out of healthy eating and ramp up your health and fitness with Roundabout Meal Prep and delivery service? And, if you don’t live in the Reno Tahoe area, there’s likely another meal prep and delivery service near you. Simply search up #mealprep and you’re sure to find something to help you check healthy eating off your to do list! m
....Simply The Bomb It is attention to detail and dedication in building unique menus, working in various venues, working with dietary and allergy needs while always staying within your budget that makes our customers continue to come back for seconds!

Oh! TANNENBAUM By Meghan Ochs | Photos courtesy of Tannenbaum Events Center
Nestled in the mountainside among the towering pines and drifting clouds along Mt. Rose Highway, just below Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, there is a beautiful lodge that makes for the perfect mountain wedding or event, Tannenbaum Events Center. There are few venues that capture the natural beauty of the Reno-Tahoe high desert landscape quite like Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum Events Center is part of the Roundabout family of catering and event planning businesses that service an entire market start to finish. From their award-winning restaurant, Roundabout Grill, welcoming travelers and locals alike at the Whitney Peak Hotel in downtown Reno to their Roundabout Meal Prep food delivery service that offers a school lunch program and food service for Tesla, Panasonic Energy, Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, The Club at Rancharrah, and the Escape Lounge at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport to name a few, Colin and MaryBeth Smith have built a food service, event planning, and catering empire that has earned an irrefutable reputation of excellence. Tannenbaum, the newly renovated and remodeled events center, can host events of nearly any type; weddings, fundraisers, corporate events, or just a good old fashioned party. A gorgeous dual sided fireplace welcomes guests into the foyer and adds character and charm to the large open dining room on the other side. The transition from outdoor to indoor is seamless with large wooden beams, earth tones, and a mountain environment that literally seeps in through the dining room windows. The panoramic views of the mountains to the east and the gorgeous trees and landscape of the Toiyabe National Forest surrounding the venue are breathtaking. Christy McDougal, Tannenbaum Sales & Vanue Manager, has overseen the recent renovations and is excited about even more improvements to come, including a state of the art kitchen to better serve the delicious, creative, fine dining cuisine that is characteristic of all Roundabout establishments. The venue can hold up to 200 people indoors and also features a beautiful patio, fireplaces, and outdoor seating. Tannenbaum’s rich history adds to the charm of the venue. The original lodge, named “The Christmas Tree,” burnt down in the late 1960s and only the stone fireplace remains from the original architecture. It was previously owned by another local family who occasionally held après ski events in the evenings in addition to hosting larger events. At one point in time, the original owner had a very eclectic “collection”’ of pets including lions that lived under the patio and were fed meat from upstairs! Thankfully, this is no longer the case. The Smiths purchased the Tannenbaum Events Center in 2018 and are planning to host evening bar hours again soon. While the Tannenbaum’s ownership and the types of events it hosts have changed, its peaceful and picturesque location has not. And, now, in addition to the beautiful views, vast space, and fresh mountain air, those looking for the perfect Northern Sierra location for their wedding or event will also benefit from the full service staff, catering, and event planning offered by the powerhouse team that is the Roundabout family. m

DESTINATION Weddings SOUTH AFRICA By Danell Wilson-Perlman
Bliss Travel writer and owner of Reno-Tahoe Limousine, Danell Wilson-Perlman, a native South African with over 30 years of experience working in the tourism industry and an impressive personal travel log, explains why her home country is a top choice for your destination wedding.
Interested in planning a destination wedding? You’re not alone! According to the WeddingWire.com 2019 Newlywed Report (the largest survey of its kind with over 18,000 respondents), 25% of couples are now opting to get out of town to tie the knot. Imagine…your closest friends and family all embarking on a new, exciting adventure together, making memories that will yield family stories to be cherished for years to come. While a destination wedding doesn’t have to take you abroad, once the wedding is over and both finances and focus start turning toward work and family, the likelihood of your travel plans taking you halfway around the world may decrease. You’re already aware that weddings can be costly and you may be willing to stretch your budget now more than ever, and that goes for family members too. A wedding is a great way, and perhaps the only way for some, to justify time away from work for international travel with loved ones. So, why not choose a bucket list destination like South Africa for your wedding celebration? You may find it is a swift and easy decision considering that, at the time of print, the current Dollar/Rand exchange rate is 14 to 1! I’m going to touch on four stellar properties I’ve experienced as a bride, wedding guest, and vacationer. They are all unique, and you will want to return for more. Agulhas Country Lodge It was October 1997 when I first met Ron. I rented a car from his company in Truckee, CA and we became fast friends. There was an immediate connection and over time, we fell in love, talking for hours on end any chance we could. About two years later, I was back in South Africa visiting my family for the holidays and Ron proposed over the phone on Christmas Day. We decided then and there to fast forward the wedding to February 13, 2000. We only had six weeks to plan the wedding! And, due to work commitments, Ron did not arrive in South Africa until five days before the wedding. How did we pull it off? It was truly a case of put your mind to it and make it happen! Not only was my dress custom designed and handmade but I created and hand wrote the wedding invitations too—it was a labor

of love. Prior to Ron and I ever crossing paths and 10 years before tanzanite was famous, on a whim he asked a friend who was traveling in Africa to bring him back some tanzanite from Tanzania. It always makes me smile to know that he requested a gem from Africa…the gem showed up and then me a few years later – Ron brought this fortuitous gem with him to South Africa along with some of the diamonds from his mom’s wedding ring and our wedding rings were handmade in 24 hours-we are still in love with them today. Our reception took place at the beautiful Agulhas Country Lodge, which is built from natural limestone and blends into the background of a rocky hill at the southernmost tip of Africa. We were the very first wedding they ever did, and boy, owner Sue Fenwick and her team hit it out of the ballpark with our day. She even fulfilled the groom’s carrot wedding cake request and decorated it with fresh lavender from her herb garden. It was a magical day with blue skies and breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean from every vantage point. You can’t beat the fantastic photo locations; from the longest stretch of sandy beach in the southern hemisphere to the second-oldest lighthouse on the continent of Africa, and the monument marking the southernmost tip of Africa. These are fond memories we will cherish for years to come. Elandskloof This January, I had the privilege of attending the wedding of my dear friend, Elmarie, back in my home country. The wedding weekend was an unforgettable all-inclusive stay at Elandskloof, a working guest farm within a 90 minute drive from Cape Town. Spending two glorious days on a farm with no cell service was a dream come true! The best part was reconnecting with college friends I hadn’t seen since we graduated in 1994. Cottages were spread out in clusters all over the farm, each one with stunning views of either mountain scenery, pastures, or grazing livestock. The rehearsal dinner took place on a Friday night under starry skies with a traditional braai (South African word for BBQ) like no other. Coming home and enjoying the foods I grew up with added some special fairy dust to this experience. Starting the long-awaited wedding day with an early swim in the river set the tone for a magical day to come. I went out on a limb and got a hair appointment in the nearby tiny village of Greyton to make sure my hairdo looked appropriate for the occasion! The stylist was top-notch, and I even left with glitter in my hair. The ceremony took place under the trees next to the river, a perfect spot for this special couple to say their “I do’s.” The reception happened in a stunning stone barn with so much character. Our friends at Okasie produced breathtaking arrangements of fresh roses throughout.

Custom-made pastel candles flickered as we listened to the most beautiful wishes of family and friends for the best life together as husband and wife. After we had enjoyed another five-star meal, we danced and laughed until the wee hours of the morning, celebrating love and friendship. After Sunday brunch at the river’s edge under willow trees, it was time to say our goodbyes. Elmarie and Andre’s wedding celebration was truly a weekend like no other. Jan Harmsgat The Jan Harmsgat Country House and Guest Farm date back to 1723 and can accommodate up to 50 wedding guests. From the moment you set foot on this historic piece of land, you will be transported to a time of yesteryear but will still have all of today’s luxuries. It is a working pecan and pomegranate farm – wait until you taste the pomegranate juice! Spacious bedrooms, claw-footed tubs, fresh flowers, a fresh apple, and a personal greeting card await your arrival. During my last visit, our group was starving by the time we arrived at the property. A call to the General Manager, Francois, 15-minutes before arrival produced the most delicious charcuterie platter and a specialty cocktail for each of my guests. You will experience outstanding customer service and attention to detail by a staff who you can feel genuinely care. The onsite restaurant, Just Amy, is located in another historical marvel of a building. Here, you will be treated to a very detailed and informative wine tasting featuring a selection of Jan Harmsgat’s boutique wines followed by a magnificent fivestar dinner featuring local specialties. To finish your wedding weekend, you and your guests will indulge in a picnic brunch on the mountaintop. Trust me – you will not want to leave. Sibani Wilderness Lodge Now, we will embark on a journey to the “Cradle of Humankind,” 35 miles from Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. Sibani Wilderness Lodge in the heart of Mt. Savannah Game Reserve is a magical place I can’t describe in words. It is home to a vast array of wildlife (no predators) including giraffe, impala, zebra, as well as an impressive variety of bird life, flora and fauna. Whether you choose to stay in the main lodge, royal cottages, or luxury tents with amazing views of the landscape and watering hole, you will feel as if you’re in Paradise. It’s an authentic African landscape setting where your wedding party may enjoy hot air balloon rides over the Savannah, horseback riding, game drives, mountain bike adventures, and luxurious spa treatments. Start your wedding day with yoga and journaling at the watering hole; the rest of the day will unfold like a magic carpet ride! m

THE BABE Cave By Britton Murdock Nunn | Photos by Jesse Wendy
What happens when you combine a group of entrepreneurial minded women, working side by side to build businesses from scratch all under one roof? The answer is MAGIC. Meet the women of Reno’s newest office space, The Babe Cave. The name was coined by the female entrepreneurs and business owners that share the space. This is a real-life example of women supporting each other while growing businesses and lifting others up along the way. The first business of The Babe Cave is w.inc digital, named after the founder Whitney Korda. w.inc is a boutique digital marketing agency forging a unique brand experience through strategy and creativity. Whitney and her team, Ashley Polan and Rachael Wiebelhaus, are blazing the trail when it comes to marketing. SEO, Analytics, Display & Paid Media sound overwhelming? It’s because they can be. Leave it to the experts, these women have creative flare and execute when it comes to marketing. Their growing business demanded a new office. They found the perfect spot but had a little extra space to fill so they called me, Britton Murdock Nunn, owner of The Biggest Little Fashion Truck. Whitney and Ashley knew the BLFT was looking for an office space as the home office setup could no longer handle the demand of my growing business. The BLFT is a mobile fashion boutique that sets up pop-up shops around town. Coming up on year three of business, Brigitte (co-owner/sister) and I were in dire need of more space for operations, which include launching an online store in April, Biggest Little Fashion TRENDS! The new office also gives BLFT customers another option to shop our collection outside of pop-up events and home shopping parties. It was time and the girls knew that an office space was exactly what we needed. The last member of the Babe Cave joined unexpectedly, but it’s at times like this that you know God and the universe are working together. The BLFT team was doing a personal shopping appointment at the home of Kelsey Duffield. During the appointment, we found out that Kelsey was running PAAW (Patron Angel of Animal Welfare), a nonprofit with a mission to empower animal welfare organizations to ensure all animals have a safe and loving environment. She was running this out of her home and she too wanted an office space! It was seriously like the stars aligned. We all came together, signed the lease, and are now operating out of the Babe Cave. The Cave isn’t just an office with three separate entities-it’s an office that operates as one team with everyone pushing each other to work harder and achieve more. All of us are retired athletes but now we are back on the playing field wearing different numbers with Babe Cave across our chests! m The Babe Cave | 1890 Dickerson Rd | Reno, NV Follow us on Instagram: @w.inc | @blftreno | @paawfund
