‘Tis the season to be jolly, so they say. But for so many, the holidays elicit more feelings of loneliness and disappointment than peace and joy. Therefore, we thought it appropriate to celebrate stories of recovery, hope, and rehabilitation this Leslie McCarroll winter. We encourage you to be open with your emotions, share your experiences with your loved ones–good, bad, and ugly. As a society, it seems we are becoming more and more guarded with our emotions. When Haley Edwards pictures her perfect Christmas Eve, she imagines a red velvet dress, sparkly earrings—and lashes that last for days. That’s why Edwards, 35, who lives in New York City and vacations in Lake Tahoe every year, has already booked an appointment at Wink Lash Studio in Reno on the first day of her holiday soiree.

“There’s nothing more festive than beautiful, luscious lashes!” says Edwards. “It’s such a treat to be pampered at Wink.”

Wink Lash Studio was established in 2014 by Nevada native Jennifer Jeffers and is widely regarded as the best boutique lash extension shop in the Reno-Sparks area. Unlike other beauty outlets, Jeffers and her seven professional stylists, all of whom are certified lash artists, customize every service according to each client’s individual needs, preferences, and lifestyle. No service is ever the same.

“We listen to each client and pay attention to eye shape, lash length, and personal needs,” said Jeffers, 35, who is a licensed cosmetologist from Paul Mitchell and has been doing lash extensions for eight years. All Wink stylists are trained to customize the length, color, curl, and thickness of each client’s lashes. Wink also offers lashes in an array of lash materials from cashmere and faux mink to silk and various adhesive options designed for each clients’ needs—from hardcore athletes to those with sensitive eyes.

Wink Lash Studio offers three primary lash extension services: classic, voluminous, and hybrid. The classic look is designed 10

for the natural babe: with one extension per natural lash, the end result is striking but understated. “I love that it looks like I’m wearing make-up even when I’ve just rolled out of bed,” said Edwards. The voluminous look, which includes three or more extensions per natural lash, is a little more va-va-voom.

“I love the volume!” said Claire Laver, a working mom who’s always running around after her toddler. “You can be jetting from a meeting to the grocery store on three hours sleep and you still look put together.” Wink Lash Studio now offers a new service, the lash-lift, which is specially designed for those who are either blessed with naturally long lashes or who use a growth serum. In a lash lift, a stylist will tint and curl a client’s natural lash creating a low-maintenance style that lasts for six to eight weeks.

There’s no such thing as down time when you’re a member of the University of Nevada, Reno spirit team. As ambassadors for the school, and the entire northern Nevada community, they feel it’s especially important to give back during the holiday season.

“We do turkey drops and toy drives each year.

Santa shows up at some of the athletic games, we even do a huge Christmas performance with our young cheerleaders ages 4-11 as part of our ‘Perform with the Pack’ program,” says head

coach Kim Anastassatos. Year-round community service is not only encouraged, it’s required for the cheer team.

“We just want to remind our team to be thankful for what they have. Being a Nevada cheerleader is not a right, it’s a privilege,” says Anastassatos. It’s a privilege they take quite seriously. The team logs more than a thousand hours of volunteer time each year and has even won the Mountain West’s Community Service Challenge. Anastassatos states, “They learn it’s not all about the glory.

It’s not all about the calendar shoots, commercial appearances, and cheering from the sidelines. It’s about growing a service heart they’ll have for the rest of their lives.”

Whether it’s singing Christmas carols at a senior center or packing boxes for needy children in Africa, the team takes extreme pride in giving back and carrying on the tradition of community service.

“The alumni paved the way for them, now it’s their turn to set a good example for future cheerleaders,” says Anastassatos.

The team focuses on groups and organizations that are often overlooked or don’t generate a lot of attention. “We try to find different ways to give back, those not-so-typical volunteer opportunities.”

For example, at the Princess Christmas Tea at Atria Senior Living in northwest Reno, they “dress up as princesses and go down to visit the elderly folks.

It’s sad because everyone thinks Christmas is just for the kids but there are a lot of older people who don’t have anyone to spend the holidays with,” says Anastassatos. It’s an event the team looks forward to every single year. “The young and the old are drawn to one another. These older ladies look at the cheerleaders and it brings them joy, youthfulness, and happiness. They see themselves at that age and it brings back a lot of memories.”

There are countless opportunities for the team to volunteer and lend a helping hand, especially during the holiday season. In 2014, they traveled up to the lake for the Tahoe Santa Experience, raising money for orphaned children. In 2015, they delivered toys

to patients at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

This year, they made wreaths for the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Society. “People always call and ask us to help with this or that and we love being able to say yes!” says Anastassatos. “I think it’s also good for the community to see what our cheerleaders are really like, and who they are behind the scenes.”

The team has also inspired immeasurable acts of kindness in schools and communities worldwide by partnering with Brian Williams, Nevada cheer alumnus and founder of Think Kindness. Through social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, they’re able to share their experiences and raise awareness about certain causes. The community service also serves as a resume builder showing the team members’ willingness to jump in, learn new things, and give back. “I think at first when the girls show up they’re nervous, and they think to themselves ‘what have I signed up for?’ But the longer they’re invested in the program, the more they understand how important the service part of cheerleading really is.” m

We have all heard the old school fashion rules—Don’t wear white after labor day, don’t pair navy and black together, don’t mix prints, don’t wear horizontal stripes, and your handbag must always match your shoes. Don’t do this and don’t do that. It’s intimidating when you think that every time you get dressed you may be breaking some type of fashion rule.

Our advice is to take the list and throw it into the abyss of failed fashion trends and horrific style choices. Rules don’t exist anymore. The fashion world is always changing, and today it is heavily influenced by everyday women turned professional stylists on social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. One thing that high-end designers, Instagram famous models, and bloggers all have in common?

They no longer play by the traditional fashion rules. It’s all about how to style clothing.

One infamous rule of thumb that has been shattered is wearing white after Labor Day. We think it’s nonsense that just because the calendar says September you can no longer wear white. In that spirit, here are 5 ways to wear white in the winter.

WHITE SWEATERS There’s something so fresh and clean about a white knit high neck sweater in the winter. Pair it with ripped denim and booties. If you’re feeling edgy try a sporty detailed white sweater and layer it with a collared shirt and ripped denim for a clash of sporty and preppy style. Invest in one or two white sweaters for the winter. You can style them in so many different ways, turning two pieces into multiple different outfits.

WHITE JEANS White pants are the perfect change of pace to denim and black pants, which are overdone in the winter. Pair the jeans with typical winter tops such as a chunky knit sweater or a colored pea coat, and little black booties or over the knee boots. On Saturday, August 4, Saks Fifth Avenue and the League to Save Lake Tahoe welcomed 660 people to Lake Tahoe for their annual luncheon and fashion show featuring Oscar de la Renta. Now in its 49th year, the event raised more than $870,000 to keep Tahoe blue.

Oscar de la Renta Co-Creative Directors, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, introduced the Resort 2019 collection with CEO, Alex Bolen, and his wife, Eliza Bolen, Executive Vice President for the brand. The show featured 64 looks including everything from modern power suits in pop colors, shorts suit sets, signature Oscar toile de jouy prints done in modern silhouettes, sleek cut-out gowns with high slits, and petal and wedgewood pastel day dresses. Laura and Fernando noted, “Our resort collection looked incredible against Lake Tahoe with the blue backdrop and wind giving life to the dresses on the runway.”

The elegant luncheon hosted by AT&T was held at the Schumacher Family estate on a beautiful stretch of Lake Tahoe shoreline.

The day began with a cocktail reception hosted by Oliver Luxury Real Estate, a live auction presented by Robbie Gordy of Christie’s during the luncheon, and ended with a backstage shopping opportunity which was the most successful backstage trunk show in the event’s history.

“We’re delighted to continue such a special tradition with the League to Save Lake Tahoe. This is a wonderful opportunity to allow our customers to experience luxury fashion from Oscar de la Renta with a oneof-a kind backdrop, as well as raise money and awareness surrounding an extremely important cause that is beloved throughout the Northern California community,” said Tracy Margolies, Saks Fifth Avenue Chief Merchant.

Now in its 49th year, the tradition dates back to 1969 when designer Bill Blass began showing his collection to a few loyal clients and friends. Saks Fifth Avenue has partnered with Oscar de la Renta for the show for more than two decades. In total, the event has raised over $18 million to save Lake Tahoe.

“Raise the Paddle which funds special projects such as forest restoration, beach clean-ups, and water clarity programs, stole the show at the auction, raising over $84,000, the most we have ever raised during this portion of the auction,” said Kristin Keane, League to Save Lake Tahoe Development Consultant. m

The olives are all locally grown and certified by the California Olive Oil Council and cold pressed in Butte County. When I made my first purchase at Winterhill, I simply used it for dipping bread and now we own every flavor thanks to Lisa’s suggestions; from pouring lemon oil over softened goat cheese to serve on crackers or drizzling the basil over pizza. The oils are available in several bottle sizes, but if you bring in your own empty bottle, you can save 40%. Customers frequently use wine bottles for their oils, but others will bring in more decorative bottles or even mason jars.

Besides olive oil, there are also amazing balsamic vinegars. You can use your own bottle for the red and white vinegars, but the fruited fig comes prebottled. The vinegars are imported, along with the pasta, but the latest addition to Winterhill is the cheese which is made in Modesto. You can sample the cheese as well as the oils and vinegars. Other goodies which grace the shelves are locally made jam, jelly, mustard, and tomato sauce as well as wooden spoons, trays, and bowls that are made by a local craftsman. Working in the world of publishing is an exciting and fast-paced life. It involves interviewing interesting people, eating delicious food and drink, taking fun trips to beautiful places, and photo shoots—oh those photo shoots. But when you don’t feel your best, sometimes what should be a fun experience turns into a situation full of stress and discomfort.

I have been self-conscious about my neck for a number of years. Looking in the mirror was one of my least favorite things to do, and I never looked forward to having my picture taken. Rarely could a photo I’d appear in be classified as #nofilter, and my self-esteem was officially on the low end of the spectrum.

For someone who spends every day trying to build women up, it’s difficult to be unsatisfied with your own appearance. My friends and family, particularly my cousins, Jorja and Lucy, and my dad, known to all as “Papa Tony,” would always tell me that I am beautiful and didn’t need to change anything. But there was something that continued to diminish: my self-esteem, and I wasn’t exactly sure how to fix it.

Fate seemed to intervene when I was presented with the opportunity to interview Dr. Kyle Yamamoto at Sierra Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Surgery. Dr. Kyle, as I call him, really impressed me with his kind disposition and the way he spoke about his patients. But it was seeing the before and after pictures of his work that convinced me that I had found the right doctor to take this journey with.

I decided to move forward with a Mini Recovery Time (RT) Facelift to address my concerns about my neck. It is less involved than a full facelift and allows most patients to be discharged that same day. For someone with a busy schedule, it is the best possible scenario. After my consult with Dr. Kyle, I was ready to move forward and schedule my procedure.

The morning of I felt ready to get started. Any nervousness or jitters were pushed away by my excitement to finally address this nagging source of depression. Jorja came with to keep me company and help me afterwards. Having her love and support made the day that much better. Dr. Kyle and his staff made me feel so well cared for. They never failed to address a question or concern. I remember waking up from the procedure asking, “Are we done?” Time seemed to have passed by effortlessly while I was under their care.

The next morning, I was amazed by how quickly the results showed. Aside from some minor swelling and bruising, I could already see an obvious difference in my neck, and I looked younger than I had expected. Dr. Kyle performed some minor laser therapy on the area to help keep the bruising to a minimum which worked liked a charm for me.

The discomfort from surgery was easily treated with over the counter pain medication and some rest. Within four days, I was up and back to my usual routine—refreshed and with a sense of confidence that I hadn’t felt in a long time.

I couldn’t be happier with my decision to have this procedure done. One of the biggest concerns I had going into it was the reaction from others. “What would people think about me?” I wondered. Would it appear that I was vain or selfinvolved? Would they assume that I was trying to avoid the natural aging process?

I hope all of our Bliss Babes, including you, know that they are beautiful and loved. I also hope you know that if you believe that a cosmetic procedure will help you to feel like the best version of you, there is no shame in pursuing that.

A CONVERSATION WITH DR. KYLE YAMAMOTO DM: I came to you because I was self-conscious about my neck, and it was affecting my self-esteem. Would you say this is the most common reason you are given for pursuing cosmetic surgery?

KY: The most common reasons individuals come to me to discuss a facelift include lack of confidence and being unhappy with looking tired or worn out. The most common thing I hear is “I want to look as good as I feel.” Namely, people want to look younger, more energetic, and more refreshed because that is how they feel and how they live their lives. In addition, many women feel they need to look a bit younger to stay competitive in their respective careers. In general, patients want to have cosmetic surgery to do something for themselves. They deserve it and have always taken care of their bodies. Why not also take care of their face?

DM: Many would assume women are the ones seeking out your talents. Do you have men who also come in for this procedure? If so, what are their reasons for doing so?

KY: About 10% of all facial plastic surgery procedures are performed on men. Their reasons are very similar to those of women. Men often believe that looking younger will help them in their careers. While the vast majority of patients want to make sure their results are natural and subtle, men are especially concerned about this.

DM: I hope that my story can help to destigmatize these procedures. Many people assume vanity is the reason for exploring this option, rather than enhancing confidence.

What would you say to someone that is against getting a procedure like this done for fear of being called “vain”?

KY: This is brought up all the time in my office. I think the best way to think about it is to look at these procedures as a way

to maintain your body, mind, and self-esteem. We put a lot of time and money into maintaining our cars, why not do the same or even more for our face and body (the vehicle we use our entire life)? Also, we all spend a lot of time maintaining our face and bodies with things like clothing, hair, makeup, piercings/jewelry, diet, fitness, massage, meditation, skin care, and hygiene, to name just a few. Most of these things are not considered “vain” and I don’t believe cosmetic procedures should be thought of any differently. These procedures all fit within the realm of taking care of ourselves.

DM: I feel so comfortable in your care, and I know your other patients feel the same way. Can you talk about your philosophy on how you approach caring for your patients?

KY: My philosophy has been formed primarily by my two mentors: my father, who is a local gastroenterologist, and my fellowship director. They have the best ‘bedside manners’ of any doctors I have ever known. I also formed my philosophy on patient care through my experience in medical school, residency, and fellowship. Medicine is truly a human business. Our skills are geared towards serving humans, therefore, my philosophy is human based. When I meet a patient for the first time, I am not just evaluating their face, I am getting to know them as a person. Understanding, respect, and genuine care for the entire person needs to be present to do my job well. When I treat a patient, I am never just treating the face. m

When Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital (RBHH) opened its doors in the spring of 2018, it signified an important step forward for mental health in Reno and the surrounding area. It is the first behavior healthcare facility to open in the area in more than 35 years.

Nevada’s record for appropriately addressing mental health is dismal to say the least. Ranking last in the United States, Nevada’s residents have been dramatically underserved for far too long.

But that is starting to change with the opening of this new 124-bed, 80,000 square foot, state-ofthe-art facility.

“Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital represents a new day for mental health and addiction services,” said Steve Shell, CEO of Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. “Our goal is to raise the standard of care and give people another option for their treatment that has been lacking for many years.”

But this isn’t about changing a statistical ranking on some report—it’s about helping people who have previously had few places to turn. Rather than being forced to look outside Reno for assistance, residents can now stay close to home while getting the help they need.

“We are proud to be able to offer comprehensive inpatient care, and outpatient services, to those who have long suffered with mental health and addiction issues,” Shell stated. “We are equipped to treat people of all ages, which is another huge benefit to the community. The facility was designed to be welcoming, because we understand that people are, often times, in a state of distress when they need the services we provide. We want to try and make them as comfortable as possible.”

It’s likely that someone you know may have a mental illness. According to the National Alliance

on Mental Illness, about 1 in 5 adults in the US suffer from mental illness, and more than 8 percent suffer from substance abuse disorder.

Close to 4% of Nevada’s approximately 3 million residents are suffering from serious mental health conditions. Without resources like RBHH, these Nevadans are often left to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol which only worsens their situation.

So what constitutes a “mental health disorder”?

The signs of mental illness are not always easy for loved ones to recognize. The professionals at RBHH can assist people who are experiencing anxiety or depression, suicidal/homicidal ideations, and other severe mental health issues. They offer free and confidential assessments, and accept patients based on referrals from family and friends as well as from healthcare professionals which makes it easier to access their services.

Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital recently launched its Adolescent Unit providing treatment for adolescents ages 12-17. The 21-bed unit provides treatment and stabilization for adolescents struggling with problems such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia and suicidal thoughts. Adolescents receive care in a structured environment that encourages rapid recovery and a return to the community for follow-up care as needed. Patients are monitored 24 hours-a-day and always hospitalized separately from adults.

Meet Tyler Hilinski. He’s the handsome, vivacious, young man pictured above [change ‘above’ depending on layout] riding on the shoulders of friends and teammates. As a redshirt sophomore at Washington State University and backup quarterback to senior Luke Falk, he waited over a year on the sidelines for his chance to shine. His big moment came on September 9, 2017 when he was put in the WSU v. Boise State game in the 4th quarter with less than 10 minutes to play. WSU was down 31-10.

Three overtimes later, Tyler threw the game winning touchdown to Jamal Morrow. WSU won 47-44. WSU fans rushed the field and the WSU players hoisted Tyler on their shoulders. From that moment on, Ty became known as the “Comeback Kid.” He was on top of the world.

Just a few months later Tyler died by suicide on January 16, 2018. On the day he passed he went to football practice at 7 am but failed to show up for the team’s afternoon weight lifting session. How did this happen?

To those who do not suffer from mental illness, depression, trauma...the statistics are incomprehensible:

“We can’t do much to control accidents, but we CAN do something about mental illness,” says Jill Osur, Hilinski family friend, Hilinski’s Hope board member, and mother of WSU offensive lineman, Noah Osur-Myers, who blocked for Tyler and was one of his best friends.

To those who do suffer from any level of mental illness, perhaps it’s not so surprising. It seems there is a growing epidemic related to human emotion. Somewhere along the way, humans have become guarded with their emotions.

Any emotion less than happy go-lucky and we feel the need to hide it.

Sexual assault victims keep their trauma to themselves because they don’t want to burden others. Teens battling depression hide behind social media, posting only the positive. The light only seems to shine on those who are smiling, laughing, thriving...but what about those who aren’t?

It’s time to destigmatize mental illness

“If it can happen to Tyler, it can happen to anyone,” says Tyler’s parents, Mark and Kym Hilinski.

The Hilinski family was absolutely blindsided. Many describe Tyler as the happiest person in any room and on any field. He always had a smile on his face and kind words for his friends and teammates. Autopsy results showed stage 1 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. In CTE, a protein called Tau forms clumps that slowly spread throughout the brain, killing brain cells. In Tyler, CTE appeared to be starting to affect the part of his brain that controls emotions. Aside from a few uncharacteristic text messages days before his suicide, there were no signs of what Tyler was going through.

Sports Psychologist and Seattle Seahawks Peak Performance Coach, Michael Gervais, has claimed that athletic programs need to address the strength, skill, AND the minds of athletes.

Only 25% of professional programs address the brain and mental health. Sports programs pour millions of dollars into sports conditioning but not a penny into skills to deal with life.

It’s time for this to change.

HILINSKI’S HOPE Though they are crushed and still healing, still hurting, the Hilinski family believes they have been given a platform to make a difference and save lives. The Hilinski family, Tyler’s mom and dad and brothers Kelly and Ryan, along with their extended family and some amazing friends created Hilinski’s Hope Foundation (H3H) in response to the out pouring of love and affection for Tyler during, and after his life. With H3H they have created a non-profit foundation with the goal of keeping Tyler’s memory alive and generating the funding necessary to support programs that will help destigmatize mental illness.

“You saved my life. It’s working.”

These were the words on one of the many letters that Hilinski’s Hope has received in response to their diligent efforts.

Here in Reno, Kaleb Fossum, UNR Wolf Pack wide receiver, changed his jersey number to #3 in honor of his friend, Tyler Hilinski. Fossum said, “I reach out to everybody now.

Communication is a two-way street. I can complain about people not reaching out to me or I can reach out to them.

Now, I hit my friends up every day.”

Through their “Behind Happy Faces” and “Step Up” programs they will provide the funding and practical tools for schools and student athletes to implement the change necessary to bring parity to mental health in line with all other illnesses and injuries these student athletes face.

Hilinski’s Hope Foundation, WSU CougNation, and their supporters are doing all they can to demystify mental illness and suicide but the Foundation believes that talking about suicide prevention isn’t enough. They emphasize that we need to do things differently. We need to remove the stigma from mental illness. We need people to understand that you CAN ask for help. Experiencing sadness, disappointment, or hopelessness is NOT a sign of weakness, nor is asking for help.

HOW DO WE REMOVE THE STIGMA IF WE DON’T TALK ABOUT IT? The movement is growing. Many organizations are moving away from the idea that talking about suicide creates contagion and makes suicide seem more normal. The Hilinski family

I was born in Reno and lived here until I graduated from college.

I thought California would be the answer to all of my dreams and moved there for seven years before I realized that home really does mean Nevada. I was so happy to come back home and have loved living here most of my adult life. Nothing has made me prouder to be a Northern Nevadan than learning about the new Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health and Addiction Institute at Renown that opened on October 2nd. The Institute will expand treatment services as well as address addiction and mental illness on a larger scale through public awareness campaigns, prevention programs, professional education, research, and partnership with other community agencies.

This one of a kind facility was made possible with a $6 million donation from Charles N. and Stacie L. Mathewson. Over the course of the next five years, the Mathewsons will be making this donation to establish the Institute in Northern Nevada. The funds will help encourage people to seek help and also aim to destigmatize mental illness and drug addiction. This is a cause near and dear to their hearts as Stacie Mathewson lost her only son, age 29, in a drug related incident in February of 2013. Stacie shared that her son began experimenting with marijuana in high school and by age 21 had progressed to opioids. Stacie experienced the struggle of many parents seeking treatment for her child. Most drug use had been criminalized in the late 1980s, leaving addicts to jail instead of treatment facilities. The war on drugs did not support research on treatment and prevention.

In 2001, medical providers began using pain as a fifth vital sign to check on patients. As a result, the use of prescription drugs like oxycontin became more prevalent, shifting drug use to legal but dangerous opioid use. Stacie lost her battle to find sufficient treatment options for her son. But with that tragedy was borne her passion to change the treatment options in Nevada. Stacie successfully launched and supported a national collegiate recovery program, including at UNR, and then set her sights on expanding that effort toward K-12 Adolescent & Family intervention and treatment in our community.

Renown was the perfect community partner. She was impressed with Renown’s diverse community outreach, strong presence in the community, and the innovative approach to address community medical needs. In partnership with Renown, she could now take it a step further by establishing a sustainable Institute to provide help for children that need to know how to make healthier choices, and to adults that would benefit from prevention and treatment.

The Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health and Addiction Institute at Renown will be led by Dr. Kristen Davis-Coelho, a clinical psychologist who has been practicing in Reno for 18 years. She highlighted the significant areas that the institute will focus on in a four-step process: 1. HEALTH CARE DELIVERY The Institute will focus on expanding access to treatment services for people with substance use disorders and mental illness. This portion of the Institute will be critical in early screening to identify children at risk for developing mental illness or addiction. Screening will occur at the offices of primary care doctors and pediatricians.

Nevada ranks 51st in the US for youth mental health with suicide as the second leading cause of death for Nevadans ages 10 to 34. Improving these heartbreaking statistics is a key focus for the Institute and early screening will make a significant difference.

Washoe County youth statistics also drive home the importance of screening tools: 1 in 4 high schoolers regularly engage in binge drinking, while 1 in 4 also report using marijuana.

2. LONG-TERM RECOVERY The Institute will identify gaps in supporting long term recovery from mental illness or substance abuse. It will work with community partners to fill these gaps. Again, the statistics in Nevada speak heavily to the need for helping people with long term recovery. Patients who receive treatment greatly improve over time. Bipolar Disorder shows an 80% improvement rate while chronic conditions such as depression, panic disorder, and OCD show a 70% improvement rate.

3. PROFESSIONAL AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION The Institute will provide training to behavioral health care providers in best practice evidence based treatment. They will partner with providers for parenting education to help prevent drug and alcohol abuse and help identify signs of mental illness. In Washoe County, nearly 27% of the population is battling mental health issues or addiction. The suicide rate is 26.8 suicides per 100,000 people which is two times higher than the national average. Parents and health care providers need to be aware of these daunting statistics and know how to properly treat those who are suffering. Nevada has been the worst state for mental health disorders and drug and alcohol addiction mainly due to a lack of providers. As a result, there is a low number of people receiving care. Most people know someone or are personally impacted by substance abuse and having more professionals trained in the community will give people hope. Parents will learn how important it is to encourage children to delay experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Any use of substances under the age of 14 carries with it a very high prediction of future substance abuse.

4. RESEARCH The Healthy Nevada Project will be an important partnership between the Renown Institute for Health Innovation and the Desert Research Institute.

The Healthy Nevada Project will be studying multi-factorial causes of mental health and substance abuse disorders. The research will look at genetic, socio-demographic, individual, environmental, and medical causes to help improve the health and wellness statistics in Nevada.

With this four-step approach, the Institute is going to make a significant difference in Nevada. In addition, the Institute will be providing treatment at a new facility located at 85 Kirman Ave. Services will include treatment for many issues such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, trauma, and couples treatment. In all, approximately 25 providers will be available including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Alcohol and Drug Counselors, and Psychiatric Nurses. Most major insurances will be accepted which will make treatment easily accessible. There will be no in-patient treatment at the facility and that will still be available at West Hills Hospital or the Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. The three treatments to help provide solutions at the Institute will be available to patients as follows:

INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT TREATMENT - office-based therapy totaling nine hours per week that is offered during the day and at night to fit patient needs.

PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION - office-based therapy and medication management totaling 25 hours per week that allows patients to receive care outside of the hospital to assist them in applying behavioral modifications at home.

OUTPATIENT TREATMENT – includes individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, as well as psychiatric medication management and medication-assisted treatment to help patients manage prescriptions that aid recovery by decreasing addiction cravings.

A very important goal for the Mathewsons and the Institute is to decrease the stigma associated with receiving care for mental health and addiction.

Unfortunately, people are still embarrassed to admit they have problems in these areas and don’t consider themselves sick or even treatable. These are chronic illnesses and should not be looked at any differently than diabetes or asthma. Nobody gets upset if a person with diabetes has a spike in their sugar and nobody should be upset if a person battling drug addiction has a relapse. The Institute will help destigmatize mental health disorders as well as addiction disorders so that people will seek treatment in much larger numbers. The end result should be an improvement in all of the statistics that Nevada currently faces and ultimately a decrease in deaths from overdoses and suicides. I am proud to be a part of a community that has decided to pursue these treatments and solutions with such passion. I have tremendous gratitude for Dr. Kristen Davis-Coelho, Charles N. and Stacie L. Mathewson, Renown Health, and all of the hard-working providers at the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown.

In every entertainment magazine you open, we have to make the holiday parties bigger, better, and more impressive. What would the neighbors say if I’m serving the same foolproof appetizers or the wines we thoroughly enjoy instead of what’s on the 2018 must-drink holiday concoction list? But—no no no—we need to keep aiming higher, be unique, and lose our sense of self in the midst of it all.

Who do you decorate the house for weeks for?

Who do you suffer sleepless nights for, thinking of all the dozens of cookies you need to bake for all the cookie exchange parties? Cookies that you will not dare eat one morsel of—because that costly party dress has to fit perfectly. Better sign up for more personal training; can’t have my arms be flabby over the festive season. I have to shine bright. That reminds me, it’s time to book that 60

Or, you can choose to hit the reset button and go entirely in the opposite direction: start looking at booking a solo retreat over the week those dreadful parties happen. Imagine the story you are going to be able to tell once back from spending time alone. It is time to explore the whole natural world out there (yes, it still exists, and we have to find it for ourselves).I opted for a solo retreat, but not too remote, to test the waters, in a beautiful seaside town I’ve always loved but never get to spend enough time visiting. Stinson Beach is located on the Northern California Coast alongside picturesque Highway 1.

I found a gem of an authentic beach cottage located a mere 500 feet from the beach. I knew this was the place for ”me” time. I booked the

week of December 16th through the 24th; yes, I know it’s in the heart of winter, but being next to the ocean during winter and relaxing with a fascinating book by a fireplace brings me joy and so much inner peace. I’ve decided I’m going with my gut, so this place and time were calling my name instantly. I had to add a couple of journals, five paperbacks, and no downloaded books because technology is only going to be used for making an emergency phone call. I told everyone in my life that I was going off the grid. I left my house and my busy life with the mindset of a week filled with learning to meditate at least 10 minutes every morning, for going out for one hour of early morning beach time daily—time to spend walking, stretching, collecting seashells, and just sitting and staring at the waves. It was time to reconnect to nature. I am happy to report back that I was able to finish all the books, actually enjoyed meditating, and the beach time early morning revived my soul.

Here are some of the highlights of my solo week: I went hiking twice at Mt. Tamalpais State Park and one of those times was a yoga hike. I kayaked in Bolinas Bay at sunset followed by a solo beach BBQ of fresh oysters and crisp champagne. I cooked simple but delicious all-organic foods, started knitting again, and did a lot of journaling. Plus, I caught up on hours of deep sleep. I planned on just stopping by for the “Way of Tea Ceremony” during my first visit to Green Gulch Farm Zen Center on my way back to Reno that Sunday, but those plans instantly changed when I heard that they still had one guestroom available if I wanted to stay and experience more zen time. Now I know where my next solo retreat will take place. Until next time: explore, dream, discover. m

As the “Goin’ 80 girl,” I travel a lot. And as a single writer, I often travel on my own. But the holidays are here, and in my life this means the time of food, family, and friends. Because there’s so much focus at this time of year on these wonderful things in life, it also becomes about gratitude.

we left, I got hurt. I got hurt so bad that I could no longer drive. Suddenly my promises of “I’ll do most of the driving,” went completely out the window and I was stuck relying on her more than either of us ever planned on. Still she didn’t waver from her promise.

Recently, I was offered a HUGE chance to feel gratitude about the wonderful people in my world.

With this huge change in circumstances, I contacted my cousin and asked if there was ANY WAY I could bribe her into coming with us and sharing the drive, not with me, but with my friend. Amazingly, she also agreed.

Anyone will tell you that traveling with friends is usually great. While “Goin’ 80” is usually about enjoying the opportunity to road trip on your own, I’d be remiss if I didn’t sometimes write about the wonders of traveling with our nearest and dearest.

Where does gratitude fall into this? Well, I’d also be blowing smoke if I didn’t admit: travel is hard. Driving is tiring, the food is different, schedules are off, and, inevitably, emotions run high. In our family, we call those moments “play hangovers.” So while traveling with friends is amazing, it can also be stressful. Here’s where the gratitude fits in: When you find friends whom you can comfortably travel with for any period of time and still come home friends— hold on to them! I had an experience recently that showed me how lucky I am this way.

Several months ago, I put a deposit down on a puppy in Oregon. And we’re not talking the border of Oregon, or even the beautiful Oregon Coast. We’re talking 8 hours north east, complete with some of the most BFE landscape I’ve seen so far. How did we make the trip up and back in one day? Twenty hours of crackers, sodas, fast food, gas stops, and pee breaks. Oh, and an 8 week old puppy. Could be fun—could be disastrous. But I have a friend who agreed to take this hellish drive with me to get the rollie pollie ball of fur who would soon be my sidekick. Already I couldn’t stop telling her how grateful I was. I knew the trip wouldn’t be easy and there would undoubtedly be parts that weren’t fun. But she’s amazing.

Then fate stepped in, like it so often does. Four days before

All in all, we had a wonderful time. The two of them didn’t know each other, but hopefully they came out of it feeling like they’d made new a friend; and I came out of it with a heart so full I could hardly stand it. Not only did I get my furry new partner in crime, I was given a rare opportunity to realize I already had two human ones. Two people who loved me enough to take time out of their lives to help me in my own.

And we’re not talking helping me in my regular life. They took time out of their lives to support me in doing something TRULY CRAZY. Those are true friends.

It’s funny how life works. Yes, life throws really awful curve balls at all of us. For me, this wasn’t awful by any means, it was just a hiccup. But because of that hiccup, I was given a glimpse of the wonderful support I have. It’s so easy to forget about those things when you can’t physically see them on a day to day basis. So when you get the honor of catching sight of those bonds, the moment is really special. Who knew that for me, one of those moments would come on a 20 hour road trip to BFE, Oregon and back?

So, in this season of family, cooking, support, and giving; take a look around yourself and realize how amazing you have it.

Friendships are ridiculously special, and so often we take them for granted. Perhaps this is the time to plan a crazy trip with some of those closest to you in order to remind yourself to be grateful for them.

Happy holidays to all! Happy travels, happy eating, happy gathering ... but most of all, be grateful that you’re happy. m

Smart and sexy, beautifully brave, adventurous; a witty, street smart, badass business savvy woman, married to a prominent Healthcare Executive.

Philanthropist, master volunteer, socialite, P.T.A. mom of 3. She carries many torches on the outside, and has a few flames burning that you don’t see on the inside... fear, pain, rage, shame, anxiety, and depression. Turning to alcohol was an easy solution to so many of her problems, until her solution became her problem.

In my life I have suffered sudden, severe panic attacks that would cripple professional athletes. I have experienced immense catastrophic loss of immediate family members that would shock and devastate the strongest of souls. Drinking masked my pain and fears and as most chemicals do, severely compromised my brain function, and my behavior became brutally inconsistent. I ‘blacked out’ frequently and often needed highlights of the previous night’s events by calling friends the following morning. Breakfast became mimosas and worried friends and family became the enemy. My life was spiraling out of control. I didn’t understand my worth. I didn’t recognize my place in life and I never understood the importance of being the person I was…a strong, loving, supportive woman; a wife and mother, friend, aunt, sister, and daughter. That was never enough. I was never enough.

Alcohol was there for me to celebrate new jobs and grieve failing businesses. To share in a toast with good friends, to mourn the loss of yet another. To pair with an amazing new recipe, or a morning cocktail to cure the ailments of the night before.

While trying to self-manage my growing addiction, I realized switching from red to white wine or drinking beer instead of vodka wasn’t making a difference. Starting consumption at 5:00 p.m. didn’t make anything better, I still housed the 2 bottles. This wasn’t the time to ask myself “am I an alcoholic?” This was the time to ask myself “is alcohol getting in the way of living your best life?” And it sure was.

I made my first call for help by seeking a licensed therapist. After a few sessions it was suggested that my alcohol dependency was being used to mask an anxiety and panic disorder, and depression. These illnesses were coming from one root issue… unresolved trauma (well …. there was the fact that I came from a long ass line of addicts too, but that is another story).

When I think of trauma, I tend to think of blood and gore. Visible scars, broken legs, car accidents. I don’t think of trauma as being a child witnessing my alcoholic father beating my mother. I don’t think about living off food stamps and block cheese or uprooting my entire life from New York City to Nevada in the prime of my adolescence. I don’t think about my father’s fatal motorcycle accident while drunk driving when I was 16 years old, or when it was time to grieve my brother’s horrendous death caused by an explosion in his home just a few short years later. I don’t think of trauma as wondering if my best friend is going to live after her cancer diagnosis or die like everyone else I loved, including my second mother, Aunt Denise, whose death I was still grieving.

Knowing I was on the brink of losing my family, I had to make a choice to get healthy or continue to run the path of destruction, and potentially my own loss of life. I made the brave decision, against everything in my being, and gave myself a moment of grace by asking for the help I so desperately needed. After consulting close friends and family (with guidance from my therapist and other trusted medical professionals), I decided it was best to treat my illness at a center that specialized in the neuroscience of trauma and addiction. It was time to get to the root cause of the issues that instigated so much pain and suffering in my life.

Hearing the diagnoses from my psychologist was startling; Panic disorder, anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol dependency, activity addiction, workaholism, unresolved trauma, unresolved grief.

I was literally absorbing the pain that I assumed everyone around me was feeling. I had flashbacks of violent fist fights. If I saw a commercial on TV with fire, I inherited the assumed pain my brother felt by the flames that burned him and I continued to rerun his accident in my head, repeatedly feeling the pain. I had to learn that these flashbacks of trauma were considered “triggers” and the events were not happening in the present.

After five weeks of intensive therapy, I was entered back into the ‘real world’ to test the waters of living an alcohol-free life of recovery, gratitude, and mindfulness. With a whole new found love and understanding of self.

I took with me a recovery toolbox over-flowing with techniques to aid in navigating the murky waters of this new life. I hibernated (eh hem…hid) for the first year, while trying to focus on putting my recovery first, so that everything in life I loved didn’t come last. It was so hard. I was worried that everyone would wonder where I was. I was worried that everyone would judge me for not drinking (alcohol is the only drug you have to justify not taking). I was worried that I wouldn’t be fun anymore. My anxiety left me frozen in fear and panic while staring in the mirror getting ready for yet another Gala. I couldn’t do it. I knew there was a potential I would run to my well-known anxiety killer (alcohol) rather than dealing with the uncomfortable symptoms of my anxiety and panic disorders (nervousness, sweating, increased heart rate, shortness of breath, crying, fear of the unknown etc.). I made a huge, life changing shift...

I. Said. No.

I grew angry! If I would have known about my counterparts having these same struggles, I may have gotten help sooner. They could have helped me! I wasn’t as different as I thought I was, and I bet they had some tools they could share with me. It was then that I realized I was not going to continue my journey anonymously, but I was going to start screaming from the rooftops. We all have something we are recovering from. And I am not going to let society tell me I should be ashamed of my past choices, my current illnesses, or my journey to seek wellness.

A startling trend that addicts and family need to be wary of is trading one addiction for another. A common tendency, one stops smoking and starts eating. Stops drinking and starts smoking. Stops shopping and starts gambling.

It’s a slippery slope. For me, I replaced my addiction to alcohol with sugar. I already loved sugar and consumed lots of sugary drinks while on the sauce, so this wasn’t new news. I sought comfort through eating and drinking ungodly amounts of sugar and slowly gained insalubrious pounds of fat. At first, I didn’t care of the repercussions, I just kept using the excuse “I can, because I stopped drinking.” With my tools and new pals in the recovery community, I recognized that I needed to re-evaluate my nutrition plan. I had a chance encounter with Mena Spodobalski of Evoke Fitness during a crucial week of her fitness competition training, and I reached out for help... because asking for help is the new badass thing to do!

I realized for me to be successful, I had to take myself out of the environment that so easily allowed me to mask my pain and would let me slip back into my old ways of dealing with new problems.

I surrounded myself with friends and family that loved and cherished me. I spent more quality time with my children, I rekindled relationships with my true friends and, most importantly, myself.

Through a local 12-step program, I met a group of individuals who took me in as family and lit my path of sobriety. Doctors, lawyers, housewives, business owners (addiction ignores affluence)– they were all there! I was stunned! I thought “why didn’t I know ‘so and so’ had this same challenge?”

I mean…I had no frigging idea! There were a few mommies that recognized me, immediately came running to me and said “please-please-please don’t tell anyone you saw me here!” It hit me hard. The shame. The embarrassment. The same feelings I had for so long (and still did at that time). All because we wanted to get better? Were we worried that the mommies at school, or the friends that brushed

off DUIs as ‘bad luck’ or the pals that suggested “we’ve all been there” would … judge us?

With delicate diet modifications that would minimize withdrawal symptoms from the sugar, and increasingly more intense workouts as my fitness level improved, I jumped out of my comfort zone and agreed to participate in a fitness competition!

In this four-month journey, I lost 18 pounds of

fat–34% of my body fat–and even brought home a few medals from the competition! Most importantly, my mental health was clearer, my sleeping patterns improved, I functioned better, and my moods were lighter. I rekindled the love and passion I had for fitness as it was lost during my drunken housewife days.

Today, fitness is the #1 tool in my recovery box. So much so that I am wrapping up my certification as a Personal Fitness Trainer and Health Coach, specializing in Behavioral Change. By doing so, I will work with clients to recognize counterproductive behaviors and coach them to discover new methods to move more, eat better, and make healthier decisions for themselves and their families. I want to help people make healthy, productive, and permanent life changes while continuing to shatter the shame and stigma attached to mental illness and addiction.

It has been said that over 50% of adults with a mental illness receive no treatment and one out of five adults with a mental illness are not able to get the treatment they need. Knowing I sought treatment outside of my area of living, I am beyond excited that our community is adding two premier behavior health centers with the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown, and the Reno Behavioral Health Hospital.

Illness is not a choice, how we approach it as a society is. It is time to reframe the conversations about asking for help and start listening to those that are both screaming out and suffering in silence.

In 2018, I started my blog (Sober-Sally.com) with the intent to INSPIRE– LIVE–GIVE, cultivating a community of recovery to inspire others to tell their story, to live our best lives, and to give back to those in need. With over thousands of international social media followers, we have come together by vowing to end the shame and stigma of mental illness and addiction, with great hope it will no longer be a barrier to anyone seeking help. We lift each other up. We share stories of hope and inspiration.

We know that everyone is fighting a battle and a little love and kindness do go a long way. m

LOCAL Ambition JAMILEIGH NOLEN

“The mountain may be hard to climb, but the view is so beautiful.”

These words couldn’t be more true for a small town girl from the bootheel of Missouri.

Jamileigh Nolen knew that she wanted to be a model since she was three years old. While she may not have remembered any of this, her mother certainly did. She would parade around their home like a pageant model and asked “momma” to take her picture. Her mother knew that Jamileigh was special and did everything she could to nurture her talent and ambition.

Her mother decided to enter Jamileigh into beauty pageants. While the experience might not be for everyone, young Jamileigh loved it. Her parents would load up the car and drive to as many pageants as they could. Over time, Jamileigh’s room was decorated in countless crowns, sashes, and trophies which served as reminders that you should always follow your dreams.

In 2013, Jamileigh had the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles and model, but life stopped her from doing so.

At 16 years old, she found out that she was pregnant. “I 72

thought my dream was over,” she said. “Everyone in small towns seems to settle and they give up on their dreams,” she added, “I thought I would have to do the same.”

Her pregnancy was difficult and Jamileigh was in for the fight of her life. A sudden illness gripped her and, while pregnant, dropped her down to only 75 lbs. Her perseverance and fighting spirit paid off, however, and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Sophie.

Months of bed rest were ahead and Jamileigh thought once again about her dream of becoming a model. It was a passion that she just couldn’t shake.

Many called her dreams a “crazy fantasy” and didn’t think that she would ever make it.

In December 2017, Jamileigh was looking through casting call listings and audition ads when she spotted a Facebook post by Nikki Serenity. Nikki had won Local Ambition VI last year and had become St. Louis, Missouri’s most visible model.

Jamileigh looked at the post and did some research on the show. The more she thought about it, the more she wanted

to do it. She decided to give it a shot and filled out the cast member application and submitted it.

She was invited to the casting call for Local Ambition 7 at the tail end of January. Jamileigh drove over four hours to St. Louis for her audition. This was not an uncommon practice for her. She routinely drove long distances for any opportunity she could find - in hopes of landing her big break.

Jamileigh shook like a leaf the whole day. When it was time for her interview, she squeezed her hands as she answered each question the producers asked her.

When they asked, “Where do you live?” Jamileigh, without skipping a beat, named a town that was an hour and a half south of St. Louis. “I lied and I felt really bad about it, but I didn’t think they’d pick me if they knew I lived four hours away.”

The producers loved her energy (and her thick country accent) and she landed a spot as one of eleven cast members on the 2018 season of Local Ambition.

The competition was almost over for her before it even got started. The first stage’s theme was “Post-Apocalypse” and all of the contestants had to impress the judges with their own looks and personas if they wanted to advance in the competition. All of the models were to meet at an abandoned building in a quiet industrial park in St. Louis. That morning, Jamileigh made sure she had everything ready for her shoot.

She brought feathers for her hair, a fur jacket she made out of a rug, a bow and arrow, and a notebook detailing how she wanted her hair and makeup to look. After sitting in the makeup chair for what seemed like hours, she drove to set to meet everyone. When she stepped through an old metal gate, she heard a pop - she had broken her ankle.

Producers were shocked to see her being carried up the stairs that led to the building. When they found out what happened to her, director, Kevin Edwards, wasn’t sure she could even compete. Jamileigh told him that there was no way she was going to go home now. She had come too far (literally) and wasn’t going to let anything stand in her way - and she didn’t.

She was carried to her photo shoot but managed to stand and move on her ankle despite the immense pain. Jamileigh ended up getting high scores for her shoot and made it to the next stage of the competition. Jamileigh put hundreds of miles on her tiny car, practiced her lines and poses with relentless vigor, and showed up to set rain or shine to do her best every day.

Her hard work would pay off as she survived stage after stage of the competition watching her new friends and castmates being eliminated one by one. Eventually, Jamileigh was named the winner of Local Ambition 7. She was beside herself with joy when she heard her name called. What seemed like a “crazy fantasy” to people she knew back home had finally become a reality. Now, on to even bigger and brighter dreams for Jamileigh Nolen...stay tuned!

SURVIVAL GUIDE

The perfect wine pairing at the holiday table is as elusive as the perfect gift. You agonize over it, plan for it, wing it, or make your best call and hope it all works out.

Holiday meals can be rough on both the midsection and on the pairing regimen, because there is such a wide variety of food flavors to consider. From buttery rolls to cranberry sauce, from pumpkin pie to the mélange of wacky relatives and friend at that table, it’s a mashup of both flavors and opinions. So, while the easy way out is a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, a bottle of Zinfandel, and a bottle of Pinot Noir, this list of pairings will be focused on what wines to drink to survive that dreaded pinnacle of family challenges: the holiday dinner.

TURKEY – We’re talking about your drunk uncle here. Yeah, THAT one. The perfect pairing would be something quaffable with a relatively high alcohol content. Think Petite Sirah, so when his teeth are all purple you can giggle with your siblings.

STUFFING – This comes in so many forms, just like your rat pack of annoying cousins. Some are stuffed with sage, some are stuffed with oysters, some with cornbread - you get it. Better get an innocuous wine that doesn’t get any fights started.

Try some Chardonnay.

HAM – At Holiday dinners, you may have to endure a long line of Dad jokes. Grin and bear the ‘ham’ as it’s dished out with a tasty Merlot, and be thankful you are not the pig.

YAMS – These are the sweet little old ladies of the veggie world and must be tolerated as they have their place at the table, too. Bring on some Muscat Canelli so the sweet tooth can be satisfied whilst the blood alcohol is being managed.

MASHED POTATOES – Comfort food at its best.

When things get tough, look your significant other in the eye, drink deeply from a glass of tasty Rosé, and plan to be in Tahiti next Christmas.

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE – This dish is very much like having to sit with your ex at the holiday table. It simply has no reason to be there and makes you vaguely uncomfortable. Better keep some Barbera around to swig to get the bitter taste out of your mouth.

GRAVY – Ah, the great leveler. An average dinner can be made sublime with great gravy. Look whoever got the job of cooking in the eye, toast them with the best aged Cabernet Sauvignon your budget can afford, and then add more gravy. And be thankful you didn’t have to cook.

PUMPKIN PIE – Sorry, no wine goes with pumpkin pie! But, you have to invite it to the party, just like that 25-year family friend who will never host. Grab a bottle of Fireball and do shots.

Remember to make notes after dinner and get planning for next year’s festivities! m

Russ Reyes has been writing about, supporting and promoting the wine countries of Amador and El Dorado Counties for over 16 years! He offers tours, speaking engagement and live social media broadcasts through his Facebook and Instagram pages as Kilt & Cork (@kiltandcork).

The story of Distant Cellars, located in Fiddletown, CA is not so much about wine as it is about family. The wine is the result of what can happen when a close knit “tribe” of brothers and their dad collaborate to make something extraordinary!

The story of Distant Cellars begins with the patriarch of this band of brothers, Steven Gaiser. Steven spent his career in consulting for multi-national corporations and in corporate real estate. After some corporate changes and a growing desire to retire, Steven found himself looking for the perfect retirement home. He and his four sons, affectionately called the “Gaiser boys,” had purchased the winery property a few years before and really had not done much with it. Steven envisioned his retirement relaxing in Vail; skiing, hunting, and living a life of leisure in a place he loved. But, the Gaiser boys had other plans.

The Gaiser boys have always been close, and even though they all have such diverse interests, they share a deep love of wine and family. The bond between the brothers and their dad is as hearty and strong as the vines that grow in their vineyards. Like those vines, the brothers branch out all over from the root stock, which is firmly grounded in Amador. In fact, the name Distant Cellars comes from the notion that like the points of a compass, the four brothers are spread out all over the US. That is the meaning behind their logo and their brand.

“They pretty much voted me off the island!” Says Steven. “After having a family meeting, the boys said, ‘Dad, you’ve been voted out of the Colorado Tribe,’ and they were sending me west to California to make something of this winery we had purchased.”

Drew Gaiser is the president of Distant Cellars and is a firefighter in Denver by trade. His love of wine started when he traveled with his dad to Amador for a Big Crush event, and he was hooked. His passion for firefighting inspired an amazing blend at Distant Cellars called Tribute.

Started in 2010, the Tribute label was created to raise funds for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Since then, Distant Cellars has donated over $100,000 to the Foundation. Passionate about this cause, they will continue to donate 30% of all the proceeds from the sale of the Tribute Label.

A close-knit group, the boys would all help, using their individual talents to help their dad “enjoy” his retirement in the beautiful Sierra Foothills of California.

Blake Gaiser is the family winemaker, and along with winemaking consultant, Susan Farrington, makes all the Distant Cellars wines. Blake, who lives in Aurora,

Colorado, was the kid who at 15 decided to move to Europe to play soccer in France. It was while living in France that he developed a love for wine. After what he describes as “extensive” wine tasting around the world, attending classes at UC Davis, and working at a local Amador winery, Blake took over the winemaking duties at Distant Cellars. Blake describes his wines as Old World inspired and it is true they have a very balanced character to them, allowing the fruit to speak for itself!

Todd Gaiser lives in Highlands Ranch, Colorado and manages the wine club and handles the IT duties for the family. With a background in tech, he gained his appreciation for wine while working for a tech giant in Seattle. He would often journey in to the Washington wine country over the ten years he was there. Todd also helps out with the blending because he is a big red wine fan.

Reid Gaiser, the youngest of the brothers, is as involved as he can be with the business management, but as a full-time US Air Force pilot based out of Abilene, Texas, he is quite busy. He spent time in Oklahoma at the training base teaching new US Air Force pilots how to fly. He loves that the family winery helps keep him connected to his dad and brothers while he travels the world serving in the military.

Steven Gaiser wants people to feel valued when they enter the Distant Cellars tasting room, and to feel a part of something special. The tasting room experience is so important to Distant Cellars that they brought in renowned winery consultant, Matricia Haigood, to help them get to the next level. Matricia, who has worked with some great wineries in the Sierra Foothills, sees Distant Cellars as a retreat for people trying to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

“This is the country, it is relaxing up here, and gets you closer to the earth. You can see the fruit that will become the wine you drink hanging on the vine and experience how that wine is made,” Matricia explains.

Steven adds, “We always invite our wine club members out when it is time to harvest and bottle so they can experience something special and be involved in the winemaking process.”

High above Fiddletown, an old mining community in the Sierra Foothills of California, is Red Mule Road. It may not seem like anything particularly magical just driving down the tree-lined street, with its sprawling sections of land. But when you pull into 16915, you’ve found your way to Le Mulet Rouge Vineyard and Winery. That’s where the magic is found.

Husband and wife Randy and Tracy Hart, along with their best friend, Jody Yehle, founded Le Mulet Rouge—French for ‘The Red Mule’—after spending many successful years as architects, of all things. Though wine has been a longtime passion, winemaking seemed like an unattainable dream that was best left to others.

In 2014, nearly 15 years after initially getting the bug for the wine industry, they decided to leave their professional careers in Denver, Colorado to pursue winemaking in California fulltime. In only four years, they have produced a number of award winning wines—proving that their calling was waiting for them in the Foothills the whole time.

“If I could do it all over again, I would have pursued our passion in wine a lot sooner.” said Tracy. “I’m happy to have carried the experiences that I have, but I would love to have found wine earlier.”

Their training in architecture did come in handy when designing the look and feel of, not only their winery in Fiddletown, but also their tasting room in the historic town of Sutter Creek.

They invest just as much attention to detail in their wines as they do in their design but, perhaps, using different senses.

“As women, we have a more advanced sense of smell than many people realize.” Tracy explained.

“Back in cavemen times, our sense of smell was how we identified our own children and knew if they were healthy or not. In the winery, my nose can tell me so much about the quality of our wine.

During harvest, when we’re fermenting the grapes in bins, what I don’t want to smell is a sulfur scent, because that means the grapes are stressed. I smell every single bin to make sure that isn’t happening.”

This incredible sense of smell also contributes to our ability to taste, which, for most of us, is the best part of wine. And if you thought that being in the wine industry means a lot of taste testing, you would be right.

“In our tasting room, when we open a bottle of wine we always test it to make sure that it’s a good bottle before we serve it.” Tracy explained. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself—what an amazing job!”

Along with all of the smelling and tasting of the wine that takes place is an immense amount of planning.

During harvest season, Tracy finds that their architecture backgrounds help them tremendously in the planning process to ensure that everything is done properly and on time to yield the best results.

Tracy and Jody are both very much a rarity in both their worlds—architecture and wine are historically considered to be male dominated fields. But that hasn’t prevented them from making Le Mulet Rouge a label to be reckoned with.

“This is a very challenging and competitive career.” Tracy said of winemaking. “You have to have that passion. You have to make your wine stand apart, and also be able to stay true to who you are in the process. I try to avoid using words that aren’t ‘me’ to describe what we do, and instead try to tell our story in an authentic way that is representative of us.”

At the end of the day, their winemaking journey comes down to one basic ingredient—friendship.

If not for the partnership between Randy, Tracy, and Jody, this longtime dream would never have become a reality. They each play their roles—Tracy the winemaker, Randy the vineyard manager, and Jody the business manager. And they pay homage to that relationship with their newly released Syrah blend ‘Trois Amis’—or ‘Three Friends’.

To sum up their goals for every wine they produce, the “trois amis” say this on their website: “We hope those who drink our wine will fall in love with the vision and creativity we pour into each bottle. A little inspiration to not settle. Always dream big. Never give up.”

JUMPING OUT OF THE SKY and into Wine BAIOCCHI WINES

Walking into the Baiocchi Wines tasting room is a pleasure unto itself.

I walk off Sutter Street into a garden, a quick step on to the porch of a small house then into the tasting room. Just those few steps remove me from the outside world into a new sphere of discovery.

Greg Baiocchi is there to greet my friends and I as we enter the tasting room. Greg is a warm and engaging man. He lines us up at the bar. A natural storyteller, he pours his wines and tells us how he used to be a professional skydiver in Southern California when he started teaching a few sommeliers how to jump. They responded by giving him some of the best wines they could get a hold of. Greg was hooked.

Greg then tells us how one day he decided to get a real job. As you can imagine, it was horrible. However, one good thing came from it. He met Sharon. Sharon was an accountant he brought on to help fix all sorts of financial issues the company was experiencing. Greg was fond of her early on but wouldn’t do anything about it because he was her boss. With this, I am reminded of the notion that with no other filter, nobility is man’s default position.

As they say, fate works in mysterious ways. When budget cuts came, Greg was forced to fire Sharon. He then immediately turned around and asked her out on a date. They married a year and a half later.

Ultimately, Baiocchi Wines is Sharon’s inspiration. A few years after they were married, Sharon pulled Greg aside to say, “I don’t like you right now. This job has turned you into a person that I don’t like.”

She gave him her support and two years to figure out something different. With Sharon’s help, Greg rediscovered the person he used to be. While his wine-loving skydiving friends were truly an inspiration, Greg’s passion for wine was instilled at an early age as he watched his grandfather, Maggio Baiocchi, make wine. Through the years, Greg’s interest in and breadth of knowledge of wine continued to grow. He was constantly reading the likes of renowned wine advocates and educators such as Robert Parker, John Dickinson, etc.

It was never far from his mind.

Now, standing in the Baiocchi Tasting Room, the hard work is somehow hidden in the charming ambiance.

You cannot see Greg’s years of classes at U.C. Davis Oenology program, the hardship of uprooting his family to start a winery in the Sierra Foothills, the backbreaking hours in the vineyard, nor the pain of tragic loss.

You do, however, taste it. And one thing in particular strikes me as extraordinary about the Baiocchi tasting menu - there are no tasting notes. Instead, the listing of each wine is accompanied by the story of how each wine came to be. I love that. I love the idea that Greg wants you to experience each taste with no preconceived notions. You know the story, now experience the wine.

One might think that adrenaline junkies are reckless adventurers that go out of their way to defy the elements (and sometimes sanity). I find the opposite to be true.

Every serious extreme sportsman I have ever met may defy convention, however when participating in their sport (skydiving, base jumping, etc.), they do so with a lot of meticulous planning and preparation. In competitive skydiving, every movement is calculated and performed with great intention and measure. One doesn’t defy the elements as much as maneuver through them.

The skydiver does not jump with reckless abandon but gracefully manipulates the body within airstreams at great velocities to arrive at a specific point somewhere between heaven and earth.

The same could be said of Baiocchi’s wines. His Spanish and French varietals are purposeful and intentional, bold and fearless yet tempered with a softness that is calming on the palette. Each pour beautifully stains my glass and my mind with aromas and memories. Every sip inspires new conversations and ideas. For me, great wines expand the mind and offer new avenues of insight and awareness. Greg Baiocchi makes great wines.

Greg and I sit outside to chat a little more. Sharon is not with us. A little over a year ago, Sharon lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. As we chat, Greg is unapologetically emotional when talking about her. I would be too. Sharon was Greg’s inspiration and muse. There is a sign above the bar that says, “Face your fears and live your dreams.”

That sign embodies Greg, Sharon, and everything that is Baiocchi Wines.
