It’s Summer Oh yeah!!! The skies have cleared and the sun is now making a regular appearance. The people of England are now lucky enough to basque in the warmth of the sun and spend days endlessly lazing in the grass. Or should we?

The summer vacation represents an ideal opportunity to boost one’s deen (religion). However if it’s spent inappropriately, it can lead to disastrous consequences. If we truly value our faith, it is imperative that we use this opportunity to its fullest extent. The most important element of a successful summer vacation from an Islamic perspective is the company that we keep. Our friends will either make or break our Deen (religion). If a Muslim finds himself hanging out with nonMuslim classmates who are drinking, smoking, womanizing, etc., he should not be surprised if his Iman is significantly weaker by summer’s end. On the other hand, if he keeps his company to be of knowledgeable Muslims of strong faith, or even older and wiser Muslims, there is no doubt that he will benefit immensely. Ensure you check with the mosques in your locality for scheduled lessons in the Islamic sciences. With the 2009 Special Olympics underway this summer, why not try out volunteering for the event? Voluntary services and programmes are the best
way in which we can learn new skills and meet different people. There are many websites on the internet such as do-it.org that provides information about events that require volunteers. Challenge yourself. Camping! Its loads of fun, and no you will not have to use the bushes as toilets - camping sites are fully equipped. It seriously establishes a closer relationship with Allah as we’re in an environment where we are forced to appreciate the beautiful world that our Lord has created. Summer is obviously the most ‘funnest’ season of the year. We should encourage ourselves to do something different instead of the typical day trips to Alton Towers. I’m not condemning the trip but encouraging the idea of trying out new things. Voluntary jobs and camping are merely extreme suggestions but hey, why not? If you are going abroad this summer for a longer period of time, then why not try out some voluntary work abroad? It looks great on your CV, you will learn precious life skills that you thought you might have never needed and you’ll also have the opportunity to meet new people. By Fatima Manjra

Over the last 12 weeks Darul Arqam delivered classes on the Blessed Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which was open to all. It was delivered by Sheikh Khalid who has studied traditionally in East Africa and Yemen. The following are some comments from those that attended: “I am really enjoying the seerah course… I was told we should ‘love the Prophet Muhammad more than ourselves’ and I realised I didn’t… it was because I didn’t know much about him. That’s why I’m attending the seerah class …I am learning so much!” Another participant said: “When we listen, we feel as though we are with the Prophet (pbuh) and the Sahabah. The Sheikh, Alhamdulilah, conveys the seerah in a very pure and loving manner, which increases our love for the Prophet (pbuh)… [and] increases our eagerness in following the Prophet (pbuh) and most of all obeying Allah” Darul Arqam also delivers courses in: Conversational /Qur’anic Arabic, Fiqh, Aqidah, and Calligraphy for men, women and children. Many other courses to starting soon, please refer to the website.

Khidmah
Khidmah Organisation is a Voluntary Charity which was set up with the support of community leaders in 1999 to address issues that fundamentally concerned the Muslim Community. Khidmah recognised the need for community cohesion within the Muslim community and this remains a primary focal point in the work we carry out. We work towards educating the wider community to understand that there are differences between communities and issues of sensitivities, which we should all learn to respect and understand. Khidmah Organisation has not and does not see a contradiction in being Muslim and British. We promote the common themes that run through all our communities and work towards tackling misconceptions by highlighting the positive contributions the Muslim Community makes to the wider community. The foundations of Khidmah Organisation have been built on two annual Unity events which have been a huge success with over 17000 people attending the two events in 2008. This years Unity events will be held on Sunday 14th June (Ladies Only) and Sunday 21st June (Men Only) for more information go to www.khidmah.org

“What’s so funny?”
Inspiring Recipe
Breakfast bars
By Attiya Ahmad
A fruit farmer hired two new workers for his fields, but before he sent them out for the day’s work, he told them he had just one rule: don’t steal any fruit. The two agreed to obey the rule. After the day was over, the two workers came in to report to the farmer. He asked them if they had stolen any fruit, and immediately their conscience forced them to tell the truth. “Yes, we did. We ate some when we got hungry,” they said. The farmer replied, “Ok, here is your punishment. I want each of you to go pick ten of your favorite fruit and come back to me.” The men couldn’t believe
their ears. This seemed more like a reward than a punishment! After fifteen minutes, the first thief came back with ten cherries. The farmer promptly told him that as part of his punishment, he would have to stuff each cherry up his nose. The thief was upset about this, but he knew he had done wrong, so he slowly began to push the cherries up his nose one by one. As he was working on the third cherry, he began to laugh hysterically. The farmer asked him, “What’s so funny?” The thief replied, “The other guy is out there picking watermelons!”
We received many entries and it was difficult to decide.
However, the lucky one this time round to win a meal at Tastewell Restaurant is, Attiya Ahmad. Congrats!

But mum I don’t even like carrot sticks! Inspiring Health
Ever run out of ideas of what to put in your childs lunch box? Ever got frustrated after having put some great ideas in there only to have them returned right back to you untouched at the end of the day? Well here’s some tips for packing a great lunchbox: 1 Take some bread Or some nan, pitta, chapatti, tortillas, crackers, buns, sliced wholemeal, baguettes or even why not even go for potatoes, rice or pasta instead of sandwiches. 2 Add some spread But be careful not to put it too thickly- Try vegetable spreads rather than butter. 3 Add a tasty filling It could be anything! Fish, eggs, chicken, meat, beans or even peanut butter! 4 Include some fruit Fresh, dried, chopped vegetables or canned fruit in natural juice put into a small container
5 Now a drink Water, fruit juice or milk are best – g for the drinks which have no added sugar 6 And lastly a tasty snack But this comes only once all the above has been eaten! It can be a custard dessert or a yoghurt, a slice of homemade cake, flapjack, plain biscuits or popcorn, cereal bar or even the occasional baked crisps of fun size chocolate bar from time to time. Mums and dads – ensure your child is having their main starchy starter first before they move onto their tasty snack! You can always bribe them by saying that only once they start having their sandwich/pasta/rice that they will get their snack!
Some interesting fillings for sandwiches: - Egg and cucumber - Chicken tikka and salad - Cheese and coleslaw - Peanut butter and banana - Homous and salad - Mashed sardines and tomato

Journey to Al-Aqsa
27th - 28th June 2009 Fundamentals of Understanding the Glorious Qur’an by Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq For more info: www.akacademy.eu Sunday July 12th One Day Intensive ‘Classification of Hadith’ lecture delivered by Molana Akram Nadwi
In October of last year not long after Ramadhan, a friend and I went on the journey of a lifetime. We travelled to Jordan and then onto Palestine to visit Masjid Al-Aqsa. Our journey started by flying to Amman in Jordan where we spent 4 nights and travelled far and wide visiting many reverent places. We visited the Cave of the Seven Sleepers as mentioned in Surah al-Kahf in the Holy Qur’an; we visited the grounds where significant battles had taken place, such as the Battle of Mu’tah as well as the Battle of Yarmouk. The latter was when just 40,000 Muslims defeated 125,000 Byzantines led by Khalid bin al-Waleed. We also visited many Masaajid such as the Mosques of Prophet Shoayb (AS), Abu Ubaydah (RA), Zaid bin Haritha (RA) and Jafar bin Abi Taleb (RA), to name just a few. After touring Jordan we crossed the border into Palestine, where we stayed for 3 nights. By far, this was the highlight of our entire journey; seeing, being in and praying in Masjid AlAqsa was just bliss. The entire Al-Aqsa Compound is just awe-inspiring and the feeling of sadness that one feels upon leaving is just gut-wrenching. Words simply cannot describe the beauty of that Holy Place.
