We are now entering the months of Sha’ban. The most blessed month of Ramadhan is fast approaching thereafter. The pious predecessors used to pray, “O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha`ban and grace us to witness Ramadan”. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also taught us through his own practical example that we must prepare to welcome the great guest of Ramadan by performing extra fasts and devotions in Sha`ban. It can be compared to warming up before a rigorous exercise regimen.

It is the month in which the verses of the holy Qur’an were revealed to the Prophet (saw) it is a time of simplicity, self-control and devotion to Allah. Amr bin Al-As reported that the Prophet (saw) said “Indeed as to the one who fasts, during the time he breaks his fast, this supplication will not be turned away by Allah.” Ramadhan is the month in which we have to strive to become the best person.

So to prepare for Ramadhan, we should: 1 Prepare ourselves mentally and spiritually to make the most of Ramadhan 2 Increase our good deeds as much as possible ... imagine the balance of our good deeds - the fard thawaab in Ramadhan equals to 70 fard thawaab

Ramadan Shopping Festival 2009 Over Twenty thousand people attended the Khidmah Unity Events held at Crownhills Community College over 4 Sundays in June & July 2009. The Khidmah event in its tenth year was attended by a mixture of communities and presented the public with a vast array of entertainment including sporting activities, food stalls, street theatre and a children’s entertainment area. Raffiq Moosa of Khidmah Organisation said: “We have been working for the last eight months to make these events happen, what the Khidmah events have done is capture the essence of the many different communities that are represented in Leicester.” Over 300 local volunteers worked tirelessly to help put on the first of four planned weekend of events and Khidmah org final visitor total exceeded 20,000 people for the first time in its ten year history. • Porridge with dates or wholegrain cereals which will keep you going for longer • Spicy omelette with fresh tomatoes (made with a little olive oil) • Curry with basmati rice (be careful not to overload yourself- its not about how much you can fit into your tummy! but eating until you feel satisfied) • Pitta bread with humous and salad, a yoghurt and a drink • Chappatti with curry and some rice

The best routine when it comes to Ramadhan is: 1 Have suhoor just as you would have your breakfast but choose slow release, complex carbohydrates (e.g. wholegrain starchy foods) and plenty to drink. 2 When it comes to iftar time, break your fast with dates and water and have some fruit 3 Then go to pray Maghrib straight away 4 One you’ve prayed, then have your dinner as you would normally at any other time of year 5 If you get hungry in the evening, snack on healthier foods like yoghurt, toast, fruit, etc rather than chevra, barfi or any fried foods

UWT Iftaar Distribution Hunger is a major problem in many parts of the world where famine is a cause of substantial deaths. 923 million people across the world go hungry everyday. Islamic teachings are very emphatic on the need for the Muslim community to take responsibility over the less fortunate: the responsibility becomes a part of true faith. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has said, “It is not becoming of a Muslim to sleep on a full stomach whilst those around him (his neighbours) go hungry.” (alBayhaqi) The Islamic ruling of feeding the fasting is that of feeding the poor and the responsibility is the same. The rewards can be greater however, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has said, “Whoever feeds a fasting person be it a date, or a sip of water or a sip of milk…Allah will forgive him and free him from the fire… And whoever quenches the thirst of a fasting person Allah will give him drink from a special pool and he will never feel thirst until entry into Jannah.” (at-Tirmidhi) Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) will be handing out Iftaar packages to poor and needy in various parts of the world. The Iftaar packages are composed of a variety of staple foodstuffs which cover the major food groups. One can donate towards one persons meal or help provide a village with food.
