What is a Railsplitter?
LMU’s Nicknames
Lincoln Memorial University’s unique nickname for its athletics teams seems to always bring about the same question when the Railsplitters play on the road, “What is a Railsplitter?”
Lincoln Memorial University’s athletic teams have not always had the Railsplitter nickname. The early men’s teams were called the LMU Braves. That was changed during the 1924 football season when the name “Airedales” came into use. In the fall of 1931 it was decided that the name “Railsplitters” was more in the Lincoln tradition and the name has lasted to this day. The women’s teams were usually referred to as the “Lincoln Lassies” and the “Railsplitterettes” until basketball was discontinued after the 1945 season. When women’s basketball returned in 1973, they became the “Lady Railsplitters.”
The “Railsplitter” was Lincoln’s nickname as a presidential candidate in 1860. Lincoln and his cousin, Dennis Hanks, had once split 3,000 rails to be used as fences. Lincoln campaign supporters would carry banners supported by such rails. The rails symbolized the humble Western candidate with a common background.

2002-2003 LADY RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL
HEAD COACH ROGER VANNOY Roger Vannoy enters his third decade at the helm of the Lady Railsplitter program this season. Last season’s 20-7 record marked the tenth time in his twenty seasons at LMU that the Lady Railsplitters have won at least twenty games in a season. During this time, the Lady Railsplitters have won three straight TVAC titles, five straight NAIA District 24 East championships and this past season captured the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division championship for the first time. The 2000-2001 team also went undefeated in the Turner Arena for the first time, the second squad in modern LMU history to go undefeated at home in a season. His number of total victories ranks him 13th among active coaches in the NCAA Division II. His teams have succeeded on the academic court as well. Over 95 percent of his players who completed their eligibility have graduated and the 2000-01 team had the highest team GPA in the WBCA NCAA Division II rankings. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. In 1982 he returned to Lincoln Memorial to take over the reins of the Lady Railsplitter program. By his third season LMU had a 20-9 record and went on to have seven consecutive 20-win seasons. The Lady Railsplitters have had three more 20-win seasons since joining the NCAA in 1991, for a total of ten. Since moving into the Turner Arena in 1991 the Lady Railsplitters have been formidable at home, posting a 12726 record (83.0 percent) in the Arena, defeating national powerhouses such as Delta State and Cal Poly-Pomona in the process. Coach Vannoy is a member of the LMU Professional Hall of Fame and the WBCA. Vannoy is married to the former Pam Johnston, who is also a graduate of LMU . They have two daughters, Morgane (a junior on the Lady Railsplitter squad) and Whitney. They reside in Harrogate.

ASSISTANT COACHES LAKESHIA SALTERS Lakeshia enters her third year on the Lady Railsplitter coaching staff. In her one season as a player at LMU, she helped turn around a squad that went 9-17 in the 1998-99 season. The 1999-2000 squad doubled their win total, going 18-9 and making an appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Salters also became LMU’s first NCAA All-American when she was named to the Kodak/WBCA Division II All-American team following the 1999-2000 season. She is the fifth All-American in Lady Railsplitter history and her jersey was on display last season in the Women’s Basketball Hall-of-Fame in Knoxville along with other All-Americans from the 1999-2000 season. On the court, she was the leader in both scoring and rebounding her senior season, averaging 16.6 points per game and 12.9 rebounds per game. Her 294 rebounds ties her for second for most rebounds in a season with Robin Cox. At the conference level, she was ninth in scoring and fifth in rebounding. Her other honors include being named LMU Athlete of the Year at the annual Athletic Banquet. A native of Startex, South Carolina, Lakeshia is the daughter of Robert and Cathy Salters and graduated in the spring of 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She also currently works as a supervisor of youth counselors at the Appalachian Children’s Home in Barbourville, KY in addition to her coaching duties. Her coaching duties include administrative tasks, scouting, recruiting and floor coaching. She will also help handle film exchange and other tasks.
DAWN SKELCHER Dawn joins the Lady Railsplitter staff this season after spending the last two seasons in an LMU uniform. During her two seasons, she averaged 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Prior to LMU, Dawn was a standout center for the John A. Logan Community College Lady Vols. At Logan, she averaged 5.2 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. She also shot 34 percent from three-point range during her two seasons as a Lady Vol. In high school, she earned several honors, including All-Black Diamond Conference. Her coaching duties include assisting with administrative tasks, scouting, recruiting and floor coaching. She will also handle film exchange and other tasks. Dawn is a native of Carterville, IL, and currently resides in Middlesboro. She will graduate this December with a degree in Athletic Training.

2002-2003 LADY RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL
2002-03 SEASON PREVIEW The Lincoln Memorial University women’s basketball team enters their 60 season of competition with a question: What do you get when you trade five freshmen for five seniors? Lady Railsplitter fans will find out this season after losing a combined 20 seasons of collegiate experience to graduation last May. Included in that group were three starters and the team’s top two scorers. th
Three consecutive trips to the GSC Tournament as well as backto-back 20 win seasons have left some pretty high expectations for the 2002-03 Lady Railsplitter basketball team. Obviously, playing almost exclusively on the road for the first half of the season is not the easiest way to a 20-win three-peat. However, this team will need a lot of seasoning in the fall as it prepares for the real challenge…. a fourth consecutive GSC playoff berth. This team does return a very solid inside game, anchored by returning starters Jennifer Childs and Hillary Ross. Sophomores Karmella Wynne, Olivia Reynolds and Stacey Childs appear much improved as well. It is on the perimeter where question marks litter the chalk board. Junior point guard Sarah Crook has logged extensive minutes at that spot and brings much athleticism to the position. Expect a lot of steals when Crook is in the game. Also expected to contribute immediately is freshman Chasity Williams, who might be as quick as any Lady Railsplitter in the past decade. Morgane Vannoy returns as the lone shooting guard with collegiate experience. Although her game experience has been limited, she has been in the system for two years. She is also one of the quickest to wear the blue and gray. Heralded freshman Leah Moore should also see plenty of action. The former standout for national powerhouse Jackson County (KY) High School was considered one of the top shooting guards in the state of Kentucky last year. The small forward spot will see the return of medical redshirt Christy Wiseman, who should definitely give the team some added scoring punch. Junior Sarah Berry as well as freshmen Candice Rose, Stephanie Clinton and Katie DePersio are all very capable and could each provide quality minutes. Although it is early at this writing, the team has already demonstrated that it has excellent chemistry, attitude and work ethic. These are the most essential ingredients in the successful tradition that is Lady Railsplitter basketball.

One of the team captains for the 2002-03 season.... Fourth on the team last season, averaging 8.4 points per game.... Second on the team in blocked shots and fourth in steals. Coach Vannoy on Jennifer: ”A returning starter and the second leading returning scorer, Jen is a very athletic forward who has spent most of the last three seasons at the power forward spot. However, with the emergence of some of our returning post players, she may be asked to move out to the small forward position some this year. Either way, she will be one of our mainstay players. Just look at her record here -- 59 wins and 22 losses. Jen is a winner in every sense of the word.”

CHRISTY WISEMAN Height: 5’9” Class: Senior Position: Forward Hometown: Raleigh, Illinois High School: John A. Logan College
Redshirted last season after tearing her ACL.... She was the leading scorer coming off the bench her junior season (2000-01), averaging 5.5 points per game.
#31
Coach Vannoy on Christy: ”"Towy" gives the team a great post-up option for a perimeter player. Possibly the most prolific scorer on this team, she has a great "team first" attitude. Getting back into game shape (after coming off a major ACL knee injury suffered on the first day of practice last year) and staying healthy are going to be the keys for #31 to have a solid senior campaign.”

Shot 66.7% from the free throw line... Was one of the team leaders in charges drawn.... Sarah’s sister Amanda also played for LMU from 1996 to 2000. Coach Vannoy on Sarah: ”"Pure shooter" is the term to best describe this former walk-on who through hard work has earned a partial scholarship this year. Always a three-point threat, Sarah has worked hard to improve her ball handling skills. If that improvement carries over to the defensive end, she could provide a nice spark to the team. Always willing to do anything to help the team, Sarah has already played three different positions.”

Sarah was a standout in both basketball and softball at North Laurel High School.... Was a runner-up for Miss Kentucky Softball her senior year and holds several state records in that sport.... Coach Vannoy on Sarah: ”Voted Team Co-Captain by her teammates, Sarah Crook can be best described in one word..... competitor. A fiery left-hander with a great combination of speed and strength, she is an outstanding ball handler who can really up-tempo a game. Sarah is a natural leader on the team from the point position. Equally effective inside and outside, Sarah will prove a difficult match-up for any opponent..”

Third on the team in scoring (10.9 ppg).... Led the team in rebounds with 9.9 rpg, which made her fourth in the GSC and 38th in the NCAA Division II rankings.... Set the LMU record for most rebounds by a freshman with 255.... Won the “110%” award for the second straight time last season (voted by her teammates).... Coach Vannoy on Hillary: ”Hillary is our top returning scorer and rebounder who has a 41-13 record as a two year starter. She is only the second player in Lady Railsplitter history to reach the 500 point and 500 rebound mark in just two seasons and is on pace to become the school's all-time leading rebounder. Rebounding = effort and effort = Hillary Ross! Hillary is not only one of the top players on our team and one of the top players in the GSC, she is one of the top players in the NCAA Division II.”

MORGANE VANNOY Height: 5’4” Class: Junior Position: Guard Hometown: Shawanee, Tennessee High School: Middlesboro High School
Came off the bench in 16 games last season.... Probably has seen more games from the sideline than any other player in LMU history -- because she grew up there. Coach Vannoy on Morgane: ”One of the most improved players on the team, Morgane has outstanding quickness. Whether as a pesky defender or on a quick penetration move on offense, she can create problems for the opponent. I'm not sure where she acquired it, but she really understands the game. After very limited minutes the past two years, Morgane appears poised to really contribute this year.”

Played in 13 games last season... Counting all attempts, Stacey led the team in FT percentage with 87.5%.... Named to the Kokomo Tribune All-Area Team her junior season in high school..... Also was named First Team All-Mid-Indiana Conference in basketball and volleyball that season.... Named first team AllHoward County and team MVP in the 1999-2000 season....
#44
Coach Vannoy on Stacey: ”After the learning experience of her freshman year, Stacey is showing maturity toward becoming the player that her abilities always said she could be. Possibly the only true shot blocker on the team, she has the ability to become a defensive presence in the paint. Although she still needs to develop some offensive consistency, Stacey should be ready to assume a more active role this year.”

Coach Vannoy on Olivia: ”If hard work is a factor in success, expect Olivia Reynolds to have a great year. This walk-on not only has earned a scholarship but looks to figure prominently in the team's plans this year. Olivia is possibly the strongest member of the team. Using her combination of strength and hustle, Olivia can be formidable in either setting a pick or grabbing a rebound.”

Coach Vannoy on Karmella: ”A strong candidate for most improved player on this year's team, Karmella appears poised to become a premier weapon in the Lady Railsplitter arsenal. Thanks to her hard work over the summer, she has improved her quickness and shot range. Add to that an excellent variety of post moves and you have a tough match-up for any defender. This pure shooter has a nice combination of a "downtown" shot range and a "lightning quick" release. A true freshman who will be expected to contribute immediately at the shooting guard spot. However, it was largely her standout play on the defensive end which helped her to a third team All-State honor in the 2000-01 season. 2002-2003 LADY RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL 21
2001-02 SEASON REVIEW On the strength of an overall 20-7 record, the 2001-02 Lady Railsplitters finished tied for second in the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division. This would qualify the team for its third consecutive trip to the GSC Tournament, where a loss to eventual GSC Champion Delta State ended the championship aspirations of the team and the careers of five outstanding seniors. Early in the campaign, two season ending injuries to players who played the same small forward position seriously hampered the team’s once outstanding depth. However, the team still managed to finished ranked amongst the top five in seven GSC statistical categories. Individually seniors Karra Jackson and Ashley Cox supplied the team with the top downtown threats in the conference as they combined to rank first and fourth respectively in three-point percentage. Additionally, Karra would finish fourth nationally in that category. Sara Wood was once again the team’s defensive stopper. A bright spot who is returning this season is Hillary Ross, who last season became only the second player in Lady Railsplitter history to reach the 500 club in both scoring and rebounding in only two seasons. She is the top returning rebounder in the Eastern Division of the GSC. The team added to the long tradition of Lady Railsplitter basketball with an outstanding 11-2 home court record. It also spent the entire season ranked among the top ten teams in the NCAA’s South Region. In all, the 2001-02 team gave the fans another successful and exciting season.

B. FRANK TURNER ARENA The Tex Turner Arena is home for the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter basketball teams. Within the 87,000 square-foot, fully-equipped Tex Turner Arena, the teams find the tools to build successful programs. Constructed in 1991, the on-campus multipurpose structure houses a 5,009 seat arena (an additional 1,000 portable seats are available for concerts), a state-of-the-art training room, weight room, and locker rooms as well as the academic component of the athletic training program. The arena has drawn rave reviews from the teams, administrators, and media for the spacious and modern facilities needed for a first class, NCAA Division II Program. Ticket facilities are conveniently located on the east side of the entrance. Railsplitter Head Coach Jeff Tungate, Lady Railsplitter Coach Roger Vannoy and their basketball staffs, occupy offices on the floor level. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels). A continuous ring concourse encircles the building, permitting entrance to four large public restrooms, four concession areas, and ten portals leading to the arena. The playing floor level provides access to team dressing rooms, press work areas, and storage rooms. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The structure’s roof measures 76,402 square feet, which is approximately 2 acres. The facility was officially named for former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner by action of the Board of Trustees on May 10, 1989. Turner was the captain and quarterback of the football team and captain of the basketball team in the 1920’s. He served on the University’s Board of Trustees until his death. Since its opening in 1991, thousands of fans have flooded the stands for various activities. The facility is also used for concerts, graduations, conferences, and high school tournaments. Over the years, the Tex Turner Arena has seen near capacity, attracting over 4,500 people on three occasions. The arena was officially dedicated on Feb. 2, 1991, when the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter squads opened the facility with contests against future GSC foe Alabama-Huntsville. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69. The single game record for basketball was set on January 23, 1991, against Carson-Newman College when 3,218 fans witnessed a doubleheader split. The largest crowd to have ever seen an LMU basketball game was at Murray, Kentucky, in 1986, when 9,800 fans saw the Railsplitters slip past NCAA Division I foe Murray State University.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 34th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. The GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II, encompassing 18 universities in six southeastern states. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and golf. We take pride in our 34 National Team Championships in nine sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. GSC teams regularly reach the NCAA Championship Tournaments in every sport, frequently challenging for national titles. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Stacey Mickles and Office Manager Mary Jean Box. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert Brown, President of Arkansas Tech University. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Frank Franz (Alabama-Huntsville) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert McChesney (Montevallo). LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 105th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 undergraduate majors in four different schools: Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts and Sciences, Carter and Moyers School of Education, Caylor School of Nursing and Allied Health, and DeBusk School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of 2201 graduate and undergraduate students and 85 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
