BRAZIL TRIP 2012 Coach Helio D’Anna uses the Brazil trip as pre-season for his teams (once every four years as allowed by the NCAA). During the trip, the LMU soccer teams have the opportunity to train at various sites with various clubs. They also have opportunities to observe professional practices and to interact with professional players and coaches. One of the highlights of these trips is the opportunity to scrimmage various youth amateur teams affiliated with the academy sustems of the professional clubs in Brazil. Without a doubt, these are extremely challenging matches that prepare the LMU teams for the tough season ahead.
2013 LMU Men’s Soccer
Of course during the trip the players have also opportunities to do sightseeing, shopping, and activities to experience the local culture (including the world famous Brazilian cuisine). As importantly, the trip provides a great team bounding opportunity creating the right team chemistry that is so important in athletics.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW After a near-banner year in 2012, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team strides into the 2013 campaign with an arsenal of star power and a bevy of fresh faces, all of which the Railsplitters hope translates into a long postseason run. In 2012, the senior-laden Railsplitters churned out the fourth-best season in school history, compiling a 13-4-1 overall mark with a 6-3 record in South Atlantic Conference play, earning the No.3 seed for the Food Lion SAC Championship. Following victories over Catawba and Carson-Newman in the first two rounds of play, LMU notched a spot in the title game, where they were poised to face Anderson. Despite playing to a scoreless stalemate through the first 86 minutes of action, the Trojans stunned the Railsplitters with a goal in the 87th minute to bring LMU’s season to a screeching halt. The Railsplitters’ roster took a major hit following the 2012 campaign with the departure of 15 letter winners from that squad. Most significantly, the offense will no longer feature the likes of Diego Deschamp, Chris Nash and Leonardo Germniani, a trio of seniors who combined to tally 15 goals and 12 assists last season. Even with those key losses in the attacking third, the Railsplitters’ offense is in good hands, as forward Mario Pinto (Uberlandia, Brazil) is poised to return for his senior season at Lincoln Memorial. Pinto was named to the Preseason All-SAC First Team on the merits of his 2012 campaign, which by all accounts was one of the most prolific in the history of the LMU men’s soccer program. Pinto was named SAC Player of the Year, Daktronics Southeast Region Player of the Year and Daktronics All-America First Team after finishing second in the nation in goals per game (1.17) and third in total goals (21). In 2012, Pinto flashed onto the national scene, fronting the Railsplitters’ potent offense which ranked first in the South Atlantic Conference in goals (45), goals per game (2.5) and shot percentage (.126). In 2013, Pinto looks to provide an encore performance with the help of some familiar faces as well as some new blood on the offensive side. Among the returners to the Railsplitters’ attack, junior Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is set to key the offense as the head of the midfield this upcoming season. Passos started all 18 games for LMU last year, tallying one goal and two assists in 1,456 minutes played. The Railsplitters will also look to sophomore Pedro Villa (New Braunfels, TX) for further production in the attacking third. Villa, a 5’9” forward, notched two goals and an assist in only 290 minutes of action last season. Those three signature returners on the offensive unit will be surrounded by a myriad of newcomers to the Railsplitters. Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil), George Burne (Carlisle, England), Andre de Souza (Sao Luis, Brazil) Alexzandre Leao (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) and Johnny Bracewell (Johnson City, TN) are expected to vie for playing time at the forward spot. The midfield, meanwhile, will be bolstered by the additions of Christiano Diniz (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil), Keegan Sanders (Kennesaw, GA), Bryson Lehn (Hendersonville, TN) and Nick Boegemann (Johnson City, TN). While question marks still linger on the offensive side of the field, the Railsplitters will carry a formidable defense into the 2013 campaign. Last season, LMU finished atop the South Atlantic Conference ranks in total defense, as they allowed the fewest goals (15) and second-lowest goals against average (0.82). And that defensive third returns two full-time starters and two significant contributors in 2013. The defensive torch will be carried by senior Callum Home (East Kilbride, Scotland), who effectively grabbed the reins as the unquestioned leader of that group last season. Home was named to the Preseason All-SAC First Team on the wings of his Second Team performance in 2012. During that season, Home bore the brunt of the defensive responsibility, leading the Railsplitters in minutes played with 1,569. Over that span, Home tallied one goal and one assist despite playing a limited offensive role. After 13 starts and 1,141 minutes played in 2012, sophomore Nathaniel Johnson (London, England) is set to return to the field for the Railsplitters. Clocking in at 6’0” and just shy of 200 pounds, Johnson provides a physically imposing force in the defensive third. Johnson added a single assist to his stat ledger in 2012. The Railsplitters’ defense is also expected to benefit from the return of a pair of juniors, Phil Roulier (Knoxville, TN) and Gus Rivera (Maryville, TN). Roulier is the tallest player on the Railsplitters’ defense, coming in at 6’1”. He made 15 appearances and five starts total last season. Rivera, meanwhile, started 11 games and compiled 709 minutes played in 2012. After a stellar debut with the Railsplitters in 2012, junior Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) is slated to back that defensive group once again in front of the net. Barwanietz, a Preseason All-SAC Second Team selection, compiled a 12-4-1 record in 16 starts. Barwanietz’s season stat ledger was capped with a 0.80 goals against average, 53 saves, six shutouts and a .803 save percentage. His 0.80 goals against average ranks as the best single-season mark in the history of the LMU men’s soccer program. Along with the bevy of returners to the defensive third, newcomers Harry Solomons (Leicester, England), Jordan Dooley (Maryville, TN) and Alex Cassells (London, England) are tossing their name into the competition for playing time in 2013.
The Railsplitters kickoff the season with a streak of four-straight matches on the road, beginning on September 5 with a neutral-site contest against Eckerd in Montevallo, Alabama. The South Atlantic Conference schedule begins on September 14 with a trek to Hartsville, South Carolina to take on Coker, while the home slate opens on September 18 against Montevallo.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
20
The South Atlantic Conference is in its 38th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). In 2013, the sports of men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field were added, increasing the
number of championship sports to 18. The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007 and a full member in 2008. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson University became the league’s 10th member. Three years later in July 2013, Coker College and Queens University of Charlotte joined the conference. Today the conference is a group of 12 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; CarsonNewman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Coker College in Hartsville, S.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Queens University of Charlotte in Char-
lotte, N.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

LMU SOCCER COMPLEX
LMU SOCCER COMPLEX Home of the Railsplitters
The LMU Soccer Field/Complex has been the home of the Railsplitters since the 2008 season. Construction on the new LMU soccer complex began in 2007. The complex is adjacent to the site of Gibbs Field, the home of the LMU soccer teams from 1990-2007. The settings include a 120x80 yard bermuda grass field, European style goals, and brand new score board. The large dugouts also feature storage areas and two bathrooms in addition to covered benches. In 2010, concrete stands were added that seat approximately 250 people. The hillside opposite the dugouts has proven to be popular place for fans to watch the matches as well.
2013 LMU Men’s Soccer
At this point the LMU soccer locker rooms are located in the Tex Turner Arena but are planned to be moved to a fieldhouse adjacent to the stadium site sometime in the future.

The main building houses dugouts for both teams, bathrooms, and storage for field equipment.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 117th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2012 enrollment was 4,338 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
