BRAZIL TRIP 2012 Coach Helio D’Anna uses the Brazil trip as pre-season for his teams (once every four years as allowed by the NCAA). During the trip, the LMU soccer teams have the opportunity to train at various sites with various clubs. They also have opportunities to observe professional practices and to interact with professional players and coaches. One of the highlights of these trips is the opportunity to scrimmage various youth amateur teams affiliated with the academy sustems of the professional clubs in Brazil. Without a doubt, these are extremely challenging matches that prepare the LMU teams for the tough season ahead. Of course during the trip the players have also opportunities to do sightseeing, shopping, and activities to experience the local culture (including the world famous Brazilian cuisine). As importantly, the trip provides a great team bounding opportunity creating the right team chemistry that is so important in athletics.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW Boasting a stubborn defense and a plethora of veteran experience returning at both ends of the field, the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team enters the 2013 season with all the tools to push into the upper echelon of the South Atlantic Conference. Despite opening the 2012 season with two-straight wins, the Lady Railsplitters finished with a 7-7-2 overall mark and a 3-4-2 record in South Atlantic Conference play, earning the No. 6 seed for the Food Lion SAC Championship. Lincoln Memorial drew three-seeded Tusculum for the quarterfinals of that event, and the Pioneers shutout the Lady Railsplitters, 2-0, to put a stamp on the 2012 campaign. Moving into 2013, the Lady Railsplitters’ squad is highlighted by an experience-laden defensive unit that stood as one of the strongest aspects of the 2012 team. Last season, Lincoln Memorial carried a stingy and physical defense onto the pitch, limiting their opponents to only 1.21 goals per game and posting six shutouts. Along with those shutouts, Lincoln Memorial held opponents to only one score on five occasions. The Lady Railsplitters return five different players who started at least nine games on that particular defensive unit. Headlining that group is senior Sam Adams (Harwood, MD), who earned the nod for the Preseason All-SAC First Team after providing the backbone for the Lady Railsplitters’ defense last season with 1,318 minutes played. Adams made an impression throughout the league in 2012, as she was named to the All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team for her efforts. Defensively, Adams’ minutes played mark was bested only by junior Samantha Hilliard’s (Sterling Heights, MI) 1,355 minutes on the field. Coming in at 5’5”, Hilliard packs a punch defensively, as she started all 16 games last season, notching a single goal on her only shot attempt of the season. The defense will also be bolstered by the return of junior Kristen Cook (Little Rock, AR), sophomore Krista Holka (Harrison Township, MI) and sophomore Lauren Dusold (Loveland, OH), each of whom started at least nine games last season. Holka and Dusold provide a physical presence in the backfield, while Cook displays a combination of physicality and technique to round out a solid defensive unit. In addition, the Lady Railsplitters’ defensive unit welcomes redshirt-junior Teresa Doyle (Severn, MD) back to the field after missing the entire 2012 season due to injury. In 2011, Doyle led the 8-8-2 Lady Railsplitters in minutes played with 1,682. Behind that defensive front, sophomore Kayla Stephens (Keller, TX) is expected to take over the starting goalkeeping role in 2013. The 5’11” netminder got her feet wet last season, stepping in for the injured Kayla Hanson with nine appearances and five starts. Over that span, Stephens turned away 23 shots and compiled a 1.51 goals against average. While defense was a strong suit of the 2012 squad, the Lady Railsplitters struggled on the offensive side of the ball, finishing seventh in the SAC in total goals scored (22) and goals per game (1.4). However, potency and efficiency on offense should not be an issue in 2013, as the Lady Railsplitters return every individual who scored at least one goal last season. The Lady Railsplitters’ offense is expected to be carried in 2013 by the four-headed attack of junior forwards Nicole McKinney (Ooltewah, TN) and Rachael Vienneau (Woodstock, GA), and sophomore forward Josefin Hedström (Burtrask, Sweden). Hedström earned Preseason All-SAC honors, collecting First Team laurels thanks to a four-goal, two-assist debut season with the Lady Railsplitters. Hedström was the Lady Railsplitters’ lone representative on the All-SAC First Team at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign. Forward Nicole McKinney looks to build on a 2012 season that saw her compile three goals and a teamleading three assists. Rachael Vienneau matched McKinney’s number with three goals scored on only 18 shot attempts and she added an assist last season. While the offensive unit will be keyed by the forwards, several players are returning in the midfield that are expected to play pivotal roles in 2013. Junior Brittany Jenkins (Alpharetta, GA) is poised to lead that group of young ladies, as she provided workman-like efficiency at the point position, pacing LMU with 1,380 minutes played last season. A pair of midfielders who look to play a significant factor in 2013 head into the year coming off of season-ending injuries. Sophomore Maddy Nagy (Rockledge, FL) started the first 11 games of the 2012 season before a torn ACL derailed her debut. Nagy notched one goal prior to the injury. Along with Nagy, redshirt-senior Michelle Allen (Cove, UT) is scheduled to take back to the field after sitting out all of 2012 with a knee injury. The junior college transfer kicked off her LMU career in 2011 with a pair of goals in 15 starts. The offseason growth of two midfield/forward combos will play a decisive role in the Lady Railsplitters’ success this season. Sophomore Olivia Thompson (Melbourne, FL) tallied two goals and two assists in 2012, and she will be called upon to bring some fire and energy to the pitch for LMU in 2013. Sophomore Madison Rivard (Roanoke, TX) is also expected to produce in her second season in Helio D’Anna’s system. She recorded one goal and one assist in 2012 despite playing only 188 minutes.

With a potentially elite defense, 21 returning players and a proven recruiting class, the Lady Railsplitters look to have all the elements in place to make a move back to the top half of the South Atlantic Conference for the first time since the 2007 season.

2013 LMU Women’s Soccer

The Lady Railsplitters only lost one senior from last year’s squad, but they have replaced that lone departure with four talented newcomers who look to earn some playing time in 2013. LMU welcomes the addition of goalkeeper Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, MI), midfielder Christina Joseph (Sebastian, FL), forward Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario) and defender Marissa Kiernan (Port St. Lucie, FL). Lundy clocks in at just over 5’10”, providing the potential for an intimidating presence in front of the net. Joseph comes to LMU with no shortage of success in her young career, as she was a part of the MEGU Fusion club team that captured the Florida State League U18 Championship. Michelle Hunter brings scoring prowess to the pitch, as she led the WOYSL in scoring last season while playing with the East Side Strikers. Finally, Marissa Kiernan joins the Lady Railsplitters after compiling 80 career goals and 38 career assists at Ft. Pierce High School.

COACHING STAFF

Helio D’Anna

HEAD COACH, ELEVENTH SEASON Coach Helio D’Anna, or Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his eleventh season as head men’s and women’s soccer coach. Under his leadership, the men have accumulated four conference titles and two trips to the NCAA national tournament. The women have also won four conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA national tournament. In 2007, the LMU men’s soccer program won the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles, and won for the second time in the row the Appalachian Region title, on the way to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four. The 2007 season run at the national title ended in the championship match where LMU lost 1-0 with less than two minutes on the clock. The Railsplitters also have clinched conference titles in 2004 and 2005. The LMU women’s soccer team won the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2007 and advanced to the quarterfinal round match of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. In 2004 and 2005, they also advanced to nationals, including a deep trip to quarter finals of the national tournament. The women also won conference titles in 2004 and 2005. D’Anna was named the 2004 NCAA South Region Coach of the Year with the women and the 2007 Appalachian Region Coach of the Year with the men. LMU SOCCER COMPLEX

LMU SOCCER COMPLEX Home of the Lady Railsplitters

The LMU Soccer Field/Complex has been the home of the Lady Railsplitters since the 2008 season. Construction on the new LMU soccer complex began in 2007. The complex is adjacent to the site of Gibbs Field, the home of the LMU soccer teams from 1990-2007. The settings include a 120x80 yard bermuda grass field, European style goals, and brand new score board. The large dugouts also feature storage areas and two bathrooms in addition to covered benches. In 2010, concrete stands were added that seat approximately 250 people. The hillside opposite the dugouts has proven to be popular place for fans to watch the matches as well.

2013 LMU Women’s Soccer

At this point the LMU soccer locker rooms are located in the Tex Turner Arena but are planned to be moved to a fieldhouse adjacent to the stadium site sometime in the future.

The main building houses dugouts for both teams, bathrooms, and storage for field equipment.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

2013 LMU Women’s Soccer

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 117th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2012 enrollment was 4,338 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

40

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 38th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). In 2013, the sports of men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field were added, increasing the

number of championship sports to 18. The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007 and a full member in 2008. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson University became the league’s 10th member. Three years later in July 2013, Coker College and Queens University of Charlotte joined the conference. Today the conference is a group of 12 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; CarsonNewman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Coker College in Hartsville, S.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Queens University of Charlotte in Char-
