2006-07 SEASON OUTLOOK The 2006-07 Lady Railsplitter basketball team returns nine letterwinners from last season. When you sprinkle in four outstanding new recruits, you can see why the coaching staff is cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season. The caution comes from the fact that the team struggled mightily last season. The optimism comes from knowing that those players now have a year of experience. The staff also feels very confident that with recruiting they were able to address many of the weaknesses of that team. The returning class is headed by last year’s leading scorer, Madeline Richards (Floyds Knobs, IN), who should easily become the career leader in made three-pointers this year. Junior Heather Benton (Wooton, KY), the top rebounder and second leading scorer last season, also returns at the forward position. Senior Wisemane Alcema (West Palm Beach, FL) returns as a starter at the left wing. Kate Fane (Jr., Sterling, IL) is a returner who had double-digit minutes per game last season. Seniors Kelsi Salas (Rock Falls, IL) and LaToya Johnson (Miami, FL) will provide experience and depth. Junior Sidney Johnson (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomores Kelly Youhas (Mattoon, IL) and Sarah Harrison (Sneedville, TN) all are capable of significant contributions after recovering from injuries and illness a year ago. At the head of the recruiting class sits Betsy Bowser (Sr., Galveston, IN), who will be a leading force on the team from the point guard position. The additions of junior Laura Elliot (Livermore, CA) and freshman Andi Winney (Yorktown, IN) should improve the post game. And don’t overlook the scoring abilities of freshman Whitney Vannoy (Harrogate, TN). The biggest impact that these four new players will have is the work ethic that each one brings to the team. There is also a flurry of excitement surrounding LMU’s inaugural season in the South Atlantic Conference. The move to the SAC will help the team by reducing the wear and tear of travel as well as restoring ancient conference rivalries with Carson-Newman and Tusculum, a fact that longtime LMU fans will appreciate. In addition to those two, the recently-born rivalry with Mars Hill turns up a notch as they will now count as conference games. Other familiar names to LMU fans on the schedule include Kentucky State, Lees-McRae, USC Upstate and Lee. Former TVAC foe King College also makes a return to the schedule in 2006-07 along with Newberry, who last played the Lady Railsplitters in the 1992-93 season. The move to a new conference introduces several new teams to the schedule, highlighted by a clash of two of the top coaches in NCAA Division II basketball when LMU and Catawba face off. Other “new” conference opponents include Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate and Presbyterian. Games against Virginia State, Brevard and North Carolina Central will round out the schedule.

LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF
ROGER VANNOY HEAD COACH
1982-present
Roger Vannoy inherited a Lady Railsplitter program in 1982 that had posted a 52-50 record over the previous four seasons. The rest, as they say, is history. By his third season, the team posted their first of seven consecutive 20-win seasons. The 2003-04 squad’s 21-8 record marked the 12th time in Vannoy’s 22 years at LMU that the Lady Railsplitters have won at least 20 games in a season.
THE VANNOY FILE Birthdate / Birthplace: Jan. 4, 1954 / Lafollette, TN Education: Powell Valley High School Class of 1971 Lincoln Memorial University Class of 1975 Coaching Resume: Powell Valley High School 1975-82 133-58 (69.6 %) Lincoln Memorial University 1982-present 449-231 (67.7%)
From his first game against Cumberland College on November 16, 1982, to the 2005-06 game against West Georgia in the season finale, his coaching style and recruiting savvy have brought many victories (449 overall) and exciting moments to the Lady Railsplitters and their fans. On January 27, 2003 Coach Vannoy picked up his 400th collegiate victory against defending GSC-East Champion West Alabama, a milestone he currently shares with a select few other active Division II coaches. During his 24 years at the helm, the Lady Railsplitters have won three straight TVAC titles, five straight NAIA District 24 East championships and in 2002-03 captured the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2000-2001 team went undefeated in the Turner Arena for the first time, the second squad in modern LMU history to go undefeated at home in a season. His teams have qualified for the GSC Tournament eight out of 11 possible times, including five in a row from 1999-2004. The eight trips leads the GSC for most GSC tournament trips under an active coach. The teams have succeeded on the academic court as well. Over 95 percent of his players who completed their eligibility have graduated and the 2000-01 team had the highest team GPA in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II rankings. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls’ varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. Since moving into the Turner Arena in 1991 the Lady Railsplitters have been formidable at home, posting a 150-30 record (83.3 percent) in the Arena, defeating national powerhouses such as Delta State, Valdosta State, Fort Valley State and Cal Poly-Pomona in the process. Coach Vannoy is a member of the LMU Professional Hall of Fame and the WBCA. He has also served on the WBCA All-American Committee NCAA DIVISION II WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES and the NCAA Conference BY VICTORIES Captain Committee. Coach Team Yrs. Wins

She also ranks in the top five in three-pointers made and attempted and in the top ten in three-point percentage. Chasity also scored 772 points during her career. Named District 2-A Player of the year her sophomore and senior seasons.... Named All-District during her freshman, junior and senior seasons and All-Region her sophomore and senior seasons.... Was honorable mention All-State all four years of her prep career.... Helped take HCHS to the Substate level her sophomore and junior seasons.... Her brother Thomas (LMU) and sister Julia (Carson-Newman) also played basketball at the collegiate level.... Scored 1,783 points during her prep career. Coach Vannoy on Sarah: “Sarah spent much of her freshman season working on converting her game from the post position she played in high school to her eventual college playing position on the perimeter. Unfortunately, this development was slowed by an illness which sidelined her for over a month of the season. Despite all this she kept a positive attitude and work ethic. Sarah has improved her shooting range and her ball-handling skills. She has a wonderful personality and is one of the most popular girls on the team.”

Coach Vannoy on Latoya: “A combination of nagging injuries resulted in a lack of conditioning that spelled disappointment for Latoya last season. Even though she has a nice shot range, she has struggled with adjusting to the up-tempo game that LMU plays. Coach Vannoy on Sidney: “After showing much promise early last year, Sidney’s season was basically taken from her when she suffered a stress fracture in her ankle in early November. Sid is a powerful presence in the low post. She is a good rebounder and is one of our better post passers. The good news is that Sidney is again showing that same promise that we saw from her early last year.”

Has probably seen more LMU women’s basketball games than any other player in LMU history as she has grown up on the sidelines. Coach Vannoy on Whitney: “I couldn’t be more proud and happy that my youngest daughter has decided to come to LMU. Even though both her parents and her older sister were Railsplitters, Whitney considered several scholarhip opportunities from Kansas to Florida before deciding to stay at home. From the spring of 2004, Whitney has dedicated herself to being the best basketball player she could be, It has been exciting to watch her develop. She has the ability to create a shot for herself or a teammate and is also one of the better post passers on the team.”

Named All-Hoosier Hills Conference her junior and senior seasons.... Coach Vannoy on Madeline: “Maddie returns for her senior season as the only four-year player for the Lady Railsplitters. After being named Gulf south Conference Eastern Division Freshman of the Year, she has gone on to lead the team in scoring the past two seasons. For her efforts, she has been named the team MVP in both her sophomore and junior seasons. All this notoriety comes at a price as opposing teams’ defenses have been geared to know where Maddie is on the floor at all times whenever she is in the game. This season Maddie will become the career leader in nearly every three-point category. However, with all this success, she has began the year with more determination, which has been recognized by her teammates in naming her the team captain.”

Played her prep career as a Sterling Golden Warrior, where she was named to the All-State and to the IBCA 2004 Class AA All-Star Team.... Led the Class AA players with 20 points in the Rising Stars Classic following her senior season at SHS. Coach Vannoy on Kate: “Kate is probably the most physical guard on the team. She is strong, aggressive and fearless in taking the ball to the basket. She is a competitor and comes to play hard every day. After a disappointing season last year, Kate is working very hard to regain the shooting form that earned her many junior college honors as a freshman.”

5-6 * Senior * Guard * Galveston, IN * Cleveland State University PRIOR TO LMU / QUICK FACTS Played three seasons at Division I Cleveland State University.... Set school records at Lewis Cass High School for career points, steals and assists.... Led LCHS to sectional championships all four years and to two regional championships.... Listed as a top 100 senior by Hoosier Basketball Illustrated.... Named All-Conference all four seasons and All-Region her last three seasons... Was on the Indiana All-Star Ballot.... Also lettered four seasons as a catcher on the softball team. Coach Vannoy on Betsy: “One of the major reasons for all the excitement in the Lady Railsplitter nation this year is the addition of this Division I transfer from Cleveland State University. Betsy has all the tools to become the top point guard in the history of LMU women’s basketball. A true point guard, Betsy can handle, pass and shoot the basketball. However, her biggest area of contribution is her ability to make everyone around her better. As an example, even though she has only been here a few weeks, the team has voted her a team captain.”

Named Honorable Mention All-County, Nike All-Star MVP and NYAAA All-Star MVP during her prep career at Palm Beach Gardens High School. Coach Vannoy on Wisemane: “Al established herself as one of the top defensive players on the team last season. It was this ability that earned her a starting spot by mid-season. She has also spent many hours in the gym over the summer working on her game. Although she will no doubt be called upon to be the defensive stopper on the perimeter, her offense may just prove to be a spark for the team.”

HEATHER BENTON

5-11 * Junior * Forward * Wooton, KY * Leslie County HS SOPHOMORE SEASON (2005-06) Second leading scorer and top rebounder on the team....Had a career game at West Alabama, scoring 23 points. FRESHMAN SEASON (2004-05) Came on strong late in the season to earn a starting spot. PRIOR TO LMU / QUICK FACTS Five year starter for the Lady Eagles.... One of only 16 players in Kentucky high school girl’s basketball history to score more than 3,000 career points.... Named the 14th Region Player of the Year in both The Mountain Sports Leader and The Cats’ Pause preseason previews.... Earned the WYMT-TV Player of the Week honors on more than one occasion.... Named All-District, All-Region and All-State on more than one occasion.... Broke the school record for points in a game (set by Miss Basketball Jody Sizemore) with 66 points (third most in Kentucky history) in a game against Jackson City on February 17, 2004.... Four days earlier she scored 60 against district rival Buckhorn. Coach Vannoy on Heather: “Another familiar face on this year’s team is third-year player Heather Benton. However, this season Heather may be seen in some unfamiliar places as she is working on expanding her game to playing on the perimeter. She will undoubtedly still see playing time at her familiar power forward position, where she can utilize her trademark turnaround jump shot. By also working at the small forward position Heather has been able to extend her shot range and improve her ball handling skills. She does return as the second leading scorer from last year and her development should make her an even tougher matchup for opposing defenses.”

6-1 * Sophomore * Forward * Mattoon, IL * Mattoon HS FRESHMAN SEASON (2005-06) Missed the first few games of the season due to recovery from off-season surgery. QUICK FACTS/PRIOR TO LMU Kelly was named Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention during her prep career.... She was also named to the Decatur Herald Interview All-Area Team.... Participated in the 2004 “High Potential” Basketball Camp where she was named MVP of the approximately 150 college prospects in attendance at the camp.... Also played volleyball for the Green Wave, where she was named to the Big 12 All-Conference team. Coach Vannoy on Kelly: “If adjusting from high school to college isn’t enough, try recovering from major knee surgery at the same time. That is what Kelly Youhas had to do last year during her freshman season. However, expectations are still high for this promising young post player. Kelly not only has the size to be a formidable player in the post, she also has the outside shooting range of a guard. Kelly has worked hard on her conditioning and is still developing as a college player. She does have the drive, however, and when she comes into her own she will be an outstanding player for us.”

6-1 * Freshman * Forward * Yorktown, IN * Yorktown HS HIGH SCHOOL / QUICK FACTS Named one of Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 40 Girls following her senior season.... Also named to the magazine’s All-Star team.... Earned All-County, All-Conference, Team MVP honors during her prep career... Led the Hoosier Heritage Conference in rebounds and second in scoring last season.... Exploded for a career high 35 points and 21 rebounds against Muncie Burris on Jan. 31, 2006.... Named the Munice Star Press girl’s basketball Player of the Year following the 2006 season.... Ranked 23rd in scoring and 11th in rebounding in the state of Indiana last season... Coach Vannoy on Andi: “The lack of consistent low post scoring last year was a real problem area for the team. Enter Andi Winney. Andi has an excellent variety of low post moves. She also has an outstanding touch to finish those moves with an outstanding shooting percentage. She can score just as easily with either hand and is a strong rebounder as well. Yes, she is a freshman and will need to make the adjustment to the college game, but with her work ethic and desire to play, look for her to grow up very quickly.”

2005-06 SEASON REVIEW
The 2005-06 Lady Railsplitter team returned only four scholarship players from the previous season and the team struggled to a shockingly uncharacteristic 7-20 season. This was only the third losing season and the worst record in Coach Vannoy’s 23 year career at LMU. The team shot a respectable 32 percent from behind the three-point arc, however, it struggled to a LMU record low 36.7 percent overall shooting percentage from the field. This poor shooting, combined with an average of 20 turnovers per game, would simply spell doom for the season. With so many new players, the team spent much of the season just learning the Lady Railsplitter system. After going 3-8 in the pre-conference schedule, the team would learn in their final run through the Gulf south Conference that the GSC is not a forgiving league. By mid-January, the team would begin to show some signs of improvement. This would result in winning three of four home GSC contests. The remainder of the schedule was not so kind and the team ended the season playing four of the last five games on the road. This resulted in a five-game losing streak which included a rare defeat on senior night. The 2005-06 season was one the team and LMU faithful would just as soon forget. However, the team and the staff are determined to learn from it and work hard to put Lady Railsplitter basketball back on track. 2006-07 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

In 1931, a number of colleges declared that women’s basketball was too physically demanding and suggested that schools drop the sport. Schools like LMU were increasingly forced to play local “Independent” teams, which were made up of former high school and college players, in order to be able to play ball. In more than one case, the entire opposing team were former LMU players!

* From 1978-86 the Volunteer State Athletic Conference was split into East and West Divisions. The top two teams in each division went to the tournament from 1978-80 with the overall winner representing the District in the NAIA National Tournament. From 198186 each division had their own tournament. The outcome of that tournament would determine the seedings for the District 24 Tournament, which was made up of the top four teams from both divisions. In 1986 the VSAC was split, with the East Division becoming the TVAC and the west the TCAC. The tournament format was set up so that the first two rounds were effectively the TVAC/ TCAC tournament and the winner from each conference would meet in the championship to determine the district champion. Even though LMU was not a member of the TVAC after 1989, this format allowed them to still compete in the post-season while the school made the transition to the NCAA Division II.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the The Lady Railsplitters in the Turner Arena arena (handicap access is available on both levels). 1991-present -- 160-41 The arena was named after former LMU football standout 2000-01 -- 13-0 1990-91 -- 5-1* 2001-02 -- 11-2 B. THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 109th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU has a Fall 2006 enrollment of approximately 2,981 students and 96 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
LADY RAILSPLITTER FACTOID What do the Lady Railsplitters and the Kentucky men’s basketball team have in common? They both have a tie game in their all-time win-loss record. Fourteen NCAA schools have an official tie on record. The women have six teams at the Division II level and four at the Division II level with ties while the men have two teams apiece at the Division I and II levels. 2006-07 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball
